I've really enjoyed Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series and will miss them. I actually had a lot of fun reading this novel, but as a romance it is ultimately a failure. The hero (Gregory) spent more than half the novel in love with a woman who is not the heroine. When Gregory finally realizes that he actually loves Lucy (heroine) I thought the story would finally take off, but it was not to be as it is derailed by a completely unbelievable ending. And the epilogue was just absurd. There were some lovely scenes in the novel, but it just doesn't work overall.

As a calligrapher in the wedding business I was looking for books to recommend to brides from my website. I found this book to be a little gem of information. It won't write your thank you's for you but it will guide you through the do's and don'ts using basic common sense. It has a helpful thesaurus and several sample notes to help you get past the writers block you will inevitably get when you sit down for this daunting task.

This isn't the first time I've fallen for the mental game of "well, two people on Amazon loved it - it must be great" when purchasing an item. This book certainly falls into this category for me.
I read the book cover to cover in about two hours (nice feature), but only received two or three helpful "etiquette" pointers. Other than that, I feel you're buying a book of basic common sense when it comes to writing a thank you.
Thus said, I've always been a decent writer, so....this book is probably more helpful for people that have a hard time finding what to say and how to say it. I, personally, do not have many reservations in this area.
So, in short, this book was not useful to me, but, not to be completely negative, it might be a good inspiration for those that feel writing a thank you is an extremely daunting task - that's just not me. º

This book was a wonderful tool I used when writing thank you notes after my wedding.I got many compliments on how well written they were from many of our guests. It has helped me write thank you notes since my wedding for many other occasions. I think it is important to write a "heartfelt" thank you note to someone who took the time to purchase a gift or give you their time. In fact, now I get irritated when I get a thank you note with 2 sentences!

This book is fantastic! It helped me slog through the 179 thank you notes I had to write after my wedding. There were lots of great ideas of what to say and how to say it, and beleive me, after about the 25th thank you note, I needed all the help I could get. There is good solid, practical advice as to how to manage the thank you note writing task as well as inspirational advice to help you stay properly focused and, well, thankful. All in all, it was indespensable!

I purchased this book to help me plan my wedding. It was the first book I read on the subject, so I was really wanting something a bit more in depth. This book simply lists simple ideas that could easily be found in other books. I would recommend "Bridal Bargains" instead because the book is far more informative and gives you useful ideas and budgeting help.

The advice in this book is basically all common sense. The author constantly tells you to use friends and family who happen to be singers, florists, charterers, artists, etc. If you really feel like you need this book, check the library and save the $15....that's what the book is all about, right, saving money? Oh yeah, the author didn't mention that one.

The tips are in short paragraphs compiled by category so you can easily highlight the ones you think are important without a lot of reading. Highly recommended!

I had two concrete notions in my head when we got engaged:
1. I wanted to have a nice wedding, surrounded by all my favorite people in the world.
2. And--at 30 years old--the Pretty Princess fairytale event was not my thing.
But then I wasn't sure exactly what step to take next to ensure I ended up with an event that would relect us as a couple.
This book proved an invaluable guide in helping me formulate what I wanted the day to look like. Both my fiance and I got our own copies, read it cover-to-cover, took notes and started our conversation about the festivities from there. I'd highly recommend Weddings for Grownups to any adult who wants their wedding to be a reflection of them as a couple, rather than some image of what the bridal industry in this country is trying to sell you.

I'm surprised to read others' reviews describing this book as limited to glitzy "Oscar-party"-type wedding ideas. There were no glossy photos in the edition that I read. There were, however, lots of ideas for saving money and prioritizing what really matters to you. I found the book very helpful and I got married when I was in grad school--we certainly didn't have tons of money to spend on our wedding.
What's more, this book doesn't induce "craftmania"--you don't come from this book feeling as if the only way to have an affordable wedding is to dragoon everyone you know into a cooking and crafting marathon. So many "affordable wedding" or "non-traditional bride" books berate you if you don't seek out EVERY bargain and do EVERYTHING yourself with your trusty glue gun. This book is alot more relaxed.
I loved the eloquent yet down-to-earth tone of the book. I truly enjoyed reading it. It was by far the best wedding book I read, and like most of the other reviewers, I read quite a few!

I was 42 when I got married, and even at that age, I still needed someone's permission to make my own choices. This book gave me that freedom, and I'll never forget it. If the ideas are not very creative, well, that might be the couple's job as wedding planners to get creative. I was looking for a book that gave some clues about having a wedding that was a great party - this was it. There are entertaining stories/examples of weddings & how brides solved adult problems. It assumes you know the basics & goes from there. The other good book for grownups is "The Wedding Guide for the Grownup Bride."
Disappointing -- too standard & stuffy, not very creative.......2002-07-05
I expected something much more creative. I also expected information more focused on second weddings kind of weddings. Not all the froo-froo stuff. There are a few interesting ideas; the bill of rights for weddings for grownups is great--it should have been the first thing she covered in the book. But while she says repeatedly to do it your own way, the information is geared to the very traditional wedding but without the checklists, etc. of other books. If you are looking for a traditional wedding, this book might be helpful. If you are looking for less stuffy, more individual--look for the Anti-bride Guide and Priceless Weddings Under $5,000 (and every couple, traditional or not, should find the book Bridal Bargains invaluable).

I have owned this book myself for many years, and because I find it to be extremely useful for anyone pursuing his/her inner journey, I purchased it for a friend. Readers should, however, have a basic understanding of psychology before venturing into the "wedding" of the female and male psyche.
Exceelent - addresses the dark side as well as the light.......2004-01-03
this book was very helpful in my process of deciding whether to get married and then during my engagement. A junian therapist, Leonard adressed the dark side as well as the light. She gave me great comfort when I was having less than perfect feelings about the whole process -- which is normal but rarely discussed. She also delves into the symbolism of the Ring and The Veil and the importance of taking time to go within oneself before merging with the other. But as she says it is good for any kind of Marriage process -- even that of being more connected and "married" to oneself" or one's work, etc. Insightful, Rich with Imagry, story telling and the power of archtypes. I recommend this book to any one seeking a book that is not afraid to embrace the shadow on the way into the light. It was very helpful to me.

This was one of the few books I found helpful when I was facing my fears about walking down the aisle. So many self-help books exist about how to find a partner, but few help us deal with our feelings after we have found this very special person. Linda Leonard addresses the potentially difficult life change which one must undertake during the engagement period. Our culture supports the joy of a bride-to-be but doesn't address the complete experience which includes fear, doubt, trepidations, and the process of inner transformation. I found myself saying, "Yes! That's my experience" as I read. For girls (and guys!) looking to plan a wedding that is more meaningful than elaborate, this is your book. I'm a fan of anything that helps me organize, and this book's checklists and budget sheets were extremely useful. The other books (and magazines) I'd considered were more about including every possible tradition and fad into my wedding, whereas this one helped me take a look at what would mean something to my now-spouse and myself.

I'm really glad this book exists -- it does have some smart suggestions for how to avoid the vortex of spending encountered any time one comes remotely near the wedding industry. Davis does a good job cutting through some of the haze that bridal magazines create around what you "have to do" to have a happy wedding day. That said, pay attention to the subtitle: a church wedding. The author's game plan is all centered around having your wedding at a church, using the church's fellowship hall for your reception, and enlisting the assistance of fellow parishoners to pull the event off. If you're a less traditional couple, trying to plan a wedding outside a church, and don't belong to some kind of club with comparable facilities, there are no other suggestions for alternative venues. If you're looking for some planning tools, there is stuff included here, but most it is pretty common sense.

This book has some great ideas and tips for having a budget-conscious wedding. I like that the author gives the 'bargain', 'budget', and 'bling' ideas for each category depending on how much you want to spend. It has good advice about talking to vendors and even alternatives to the traditional things. Using the suggestions in this book, you can have a fabulous wedding with exactly what you want for $5000 instead of $30,000. Excellent!

My husband and I got married last year and our wedding cost under $4000. I thought we were an oddity until I read this book. I believe the most important idea in this book is that big, expensive weddings are a fairly modern invention and are not necessary to have a meaningful wedding. Cara Davis presents three different "levels" of wedding planning, in both cost and logistics: bargain, budget, and bling. She encourages brides-to-be to choose carefully the wedding elements most important to them and their grooms and offers suggestions and tips for how to plan for each element according to their level of importance.
I believe this book will be most useful to brides who are feeling the pressure from mainstream wedding periodicals full of advertisements for the biggest and most expensive everything. "Cheap Ways to Tie the Knot" offers refreshing alternatives, and even peace, for wedding planning.

Cara Davis, twenty-something author and new bride herself, composes an awesomely arranged mix of advice, d.i.y. tips and lifetime help into the pages of this book. She knows her stuff and does a very good, concise job of explaining and helping along the way.
I will soon be the ''brother of the bride'' and I found this book to be an excellent resource not only for my sister, but for myself as well, how I could plug into the ceremony and how I could apply these ideas of moderation and limited finance into my own life.
Cara Davis does a stellar job at making a labor-intensive, painful experience seem like quite a bit less than that with her tips, tricks and humble advice through the pages of this book. I highly reccomend this book to anyone.

I am a Mother Of A bride who to be honest has not had exactly easy these last few months..i have been told a million times that I am to have understanding.Frankly i am over it! I was in a bridal store the other day and where we were shopping in Colorado and i picked up this book called" your day..". i started flipping through it and my eyes immediately went to the chapter ' navigating the mine field of family politics" After reading the book from cover to cover i picked up so many tips on what we are all feeling and some real good advice. Ofcourse I gave my daughter to read it and it has really helped not just with ideas, but how to cope with each other. I think I may actually really enjoy the day when it arrives and not be such a nervous wreck. Read it. You will find help. I promise you all.

So many people when planning their wedding actually foget why they are doing it after awhile. so much to plan and do, a job, the stress, the cost all the extra details. I chanced across Your day, your way and I took it home thinking it could at least make me laugh a little at myslef. well what the book has done is actually take me through the emotions i have been experiencing and put them into some sort of context. I just could not believe how acurate it is. Planning a wedding is also navigating a whole lot of family stuff. This book hits it on the head in a very even way. My applause. my thanks.
You have got to buy this book and sit down and really read it. If you are a bride a planner or even close to helping the planners. I really think for $18.95 it was my "to go shrink"!

Yes, there are books out there that give you the month and to do lists, but where is the schedule for the emotions that need to be managed during this most challenging moment in many peoples lives??? i mean not just the Bride, but parents, in laws, the groom etc. Your day really treads where no Bridal book i have read to date has gone.It is so current con temporary and so practical. This book is a wonderful help for couples choosing the correct wedding vow and ring vow. We enjoyed reading it and learned fascinating traditions about weddings. A good read.
A very fine book.......2006-11-04
This is one of the books that has been on my shelf for years, and that I use regularly when writing a ceremony for one of my couples. It's a good resource and sparks ideas. Along with Diane's Contemporary Guide to Wedding Ceremonies, Judith Johnson's Wedding Ceremony Planner and a couple of others, my wedding ceremony-writing library is complete.
Better than most........2006-06-22
It's difficult to recommend one book of wedding vows over the dozens of others, as, for the most part, they contain primarily, the same material. It's sort of an "If you've read one, you've read them all" scenario. However, Diane Warner has certainly established herself as one of the most prolific writers in the wedding genre, and I believe also, one of the best.
So what makes this book better than the others? More and more weddings today are moving away from "traditional" vows. Warner has assembled here, a broad mixture of vows from various categories. Though the first chapter does indeed provide examples of traditional vows ranging from Jewish, Hindu and numerous Christian faiths, the other ten chapters are devoted to non-traditional vows, e.g. second marriages, including children, older couples, ring vows, theme weddings and so on.
At just barely over 200 pages, the book is hardly all-inclusive, and the reader may not find precisely what they are looking for, but this book gives countless good starting points. You may be able to slightly alter something you find here to make a perfect fit for your wedding, or you may find further useful resources in the bibliography.
There are dozens of books available, anyone of which may contain exactely what you're looking for, but if you want a single volume to point you in the right direction, this one is better than most.
