Book Description
Phil Gordon plays poker with the best players in the world. He has won -- and lost -- in tournaments and cash games around the globe, all the while studying the game and learning from every hand dealt. As the resident expert and cohost of Celebrity Poker Showdown, Phil has quickly become one of the most sought-after teachers of No Limit Texas Hold'em. It's a tough game. But anyone can become a winning player with the right amount of courage, patience, aggression, observation, and, perhaps most important, dedication to becoming a better player.
After fifteen years of keeping notes on the things he's learned, the greats he's played with, and the celebrities he's taught, Phil Gordon has poured every single thing he knows about No Limit Texas Hold'em into this little green book. Taking a page from Harvey Penick's bestselling book of golf wisdom, Phil plays the role of both teacher and student, offering up insightful tips on how to think about poker and how to develop a singular style of play. Through philosophy, psychology, strategy, math, and the knowledge gleaned from playing poker with everyone from T. J. Cloutier and Phil Ivey to Hank Azaria and Ben Affleck, Phil breaks down the game into enlightening instructional tidbits and illustrative anecdotes that inspire the kind of persistence and motivation necessary to improve your game.
A book to rank with Doyle Brunson's Super System and David Sklansky's The Theory of Poker, Phil Gordon's Little Green Book deserves a spot on the shelf of every serious student of the game.

Great Little Green.......2007-09-22
I have read quite a few books by the pros. However, this one is clearly the best so far. He speaks in terms that are understandable and he explains things well. I recommend this book for anyone in their early years of competing.
Gives you good advice.......2007-09-01
When you start playing Texas Hold'em, this is a good book to read now and then.
If you never read a poker book, this is a great first read........2007-08-29
If you've never read a poker book, this is one of the first books you should read. It will tell the novice how to start thinking about the game. If you ar fairly new to the game, then you will find this book a wealth of information. An intermediate player will find alot in this book as well, although it may never be 'cool' to quote Phil Gordon. Unfortunately, I think Mr. Gordon explains Pot Odds poorly. SUMMARY: For the player who wants to improve but doesn't want to get too deep into poker theory, there is no beating Phil Gordon. The Audiobook version is great for long car rides or subway commutes.
Thumbs up for Gordon's green book.......2007-07-04
Found this to be very educational and easy to follow. Actually listened to it typically driving out to a poker tournament and was able to apply some of the topics immediately.
good mix of theory and play.......2007-05-23
If you like the scenario type reading this book will help you. I get bored with just calculations so knowing the though process was helpful.

Book Description
This classic romance novel tells the true story of the love affair that changed history—that of Katherine Swynford and John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, the ancestors of most of the British royal family. Set in the vibrant 14th century of Chaucer and the Black Death, the story features knights fighting in battle, serfs struggling in poverty, and the magnificent Plantagenets—Edward III, the Black Prince, and Richard II—who ruled despotically over a court rotten with intrigue. Within this era of danger and romance, John of Gaunt, the king’s son, falls passionately in love with the already married Katherine. Their well-documented affair and love persist through decades of war, adultery, murder, loneliness, and redemption. This epic novel of conflict, cruelty, and untamable love has become a classic since its first publication in 1954.

Ready for a time warp to the English middle ages?.......2007-09-21
This is an exquisitely written story. The characters, even the minor ones, are beautifully developed. The descriptive powers of Ms. Seton are the best in the genre. You can touch, hear, see, smell, and taste the time in which Katherine Swynford lived.
While he's certainly not a villian, I found myself not always warming to the Duke of Lancaster. I didn't mind though it as I found it made him more real and his preoccupation with war and marriages of convenience only made him more believable. To portray the Duke as a sensitive enlightened man of the today would do a great injustice to the authenticity of the story.
This is a love story, no doubt, but it is also a history text book, the best kind there is. You learn more about the period than you ever would in a stuffy history 101 class. I recommend this book to everyone. It is a classic and a must read for all fans of good historical fiction. And while I never read a book twice, for Katherine, I will break my own rule one day...and I look forward to it.
Amazing Character development!.......2007-09-18
This book is absolutely amazing. Who knew that a book about the Middle Ages to be so scintillating! Seton did a fantastic job of character portrayal, especially the inner turmoils of both Katherine and her beloved John of Gaunt. If you want to know the plot, read the synopsis. I have to say that I've rarely encountered such vivid characters who draw you in so completely to their story.
One recommendation before embarking on this incredible tale: buy an historical reference book about the time period. Having another persective on the historical aspects of this time would have been helpful because Katherine intentionally stayed out of the political realm and some of the factual details are hazy.
Falls short of Expectation.......2007-09-05
Katherine is no doubt a wonderful novel with excellent description of England in the 14th Century. However, in my opinion, the story fell short in comparison to the summary I read on the back of the book. Characters in the novel were well developed but not deep enough to make me cry for the characters that died. The only character I truly feel for is Katherine because throughout the entire novel it was through her perspective that the readers see. According to the author, Anya Seton, it was her intention to have the readers see through Katerine's perspective. I find that reading through Katherine's perspective a weakness of the novel because although there were political intrigues among nobles and rulers, I find it less threatening toward the protagonists of the story because the plots against the protagonists and wars were mentioned very little. When I first read the summary of the novel I thought it was a love tragedy of a dark time, but what I got out of it was more of a light reading. So I gave this novel a four stars because it was slightly below my expectation.
Superb Historical Writing.......2007-08-26
I think if I had to choose my favorite book out of tens of thousands, it would have to be this one. This author had incredible imagination coupled with outstanding literary skills. Never have I read a book that makes me visualize the late 1300s as this one does, and I've read many of them. This book has withstood the test of time, and I'm delighted it has been reprinted, as have all of Anya Seton's works.
ecstatic.......2007-08-23
I read this book about 25 years ago and have always remembered it. Found it accidently while looking for something else. Am loving it all over again.Katherine

Book Description
The Duke Diet & Fitness Center offers one of the most prestigious weight-loss programs in America. Duke’s comprehensive approach brings together the best available scientific evidence and is strengthened by more than thirty-five years of experience. The Duke program is also one of the most successful: Participants lose on average three pounds per week, and 80 percent of Duke participants surveyed one year after completing the program had maintained or improved their weight loss. Now, at last, program director Howard Eisenson, M.D., and behavioral health director Martin Binks, Ph.D., of the Duke Diet & Fitness Center, bring the Duke approach to everyone–with a plan that will help us all lose the weight, keep it off, and get healthy.
The Duke Diet takes a balanced and personalized approach to weight loss that covers nutrition, fitness, and behavioral strategies, all to help us overcome obstacles and achieve lasting success. Drs. Eisenson and Binks distill their methods–previously available only to those paying nearly $10,000 for a monthlong stay–that have made the Duke Diet & Fitness Center famous. They show us that slimming down is not just about finding new ways to eat and exercise but also involves learning new ways to think about food, fitness, and a healthy lifestyle. The Duke Diet is about losing weight–but it’s also about gaining health. The core of this life-changing diet is a four-week step-by-step program that allows you to
• choose from two delicious eating plans based on two different carb levels
• eat foods you love from six food groups, with portions balanced to help you lose excess body fat in a safe and lasting way
• select from daily menus and dozens of recipes from the Duke kitchens, including tips for modifying your favorite dishes so you can savor the tastes you love, even while you stick to your eating plan.
• make peace with exercise, formulate the right fitness plan for yourself, and get started!
• find your barriers to lasting weight loss and learn strategies to help you consistently make better choices for a healthier and happier life
Including a simple follow-up plan for continued success and lasting weight loss, The Duke Diet also features personal advice from Drs. Eisenson and Binks, commentary on health problems associated with excess weight, patient success stories, and frequently asked questions to keep you informed and inspired as you become slimmer, fitter, and–most important–healthier!
At last, here’s a book that will give you the tools you need to lose the weight and keep it off. The Duke Diet: Dieting done right.

If You Are Looking For A "Diet," This Is Not The Book For You.......2007-09-07
And if you are looking for instantaneous weight loss instead of slow, but certain change, save your money, as well. This is an excellent step-by-step guide to good health for people looking to make a lifestyle change and get into shape (as opposed to simply getting skinny for a short time). It requires that you address changes in habits that go beyond those dealing with food and eating habits. I highly recommend it .
One month on - Five pounds off!.......2007-08-10
One month eating from weeks one and two menues, has resulted in a firm loss of 5.4 lbs and 4" off abdomen! Not hungry and don't feel deprived. My family hasn't even noticed they are eating less but have commented on Mom's new variety of menues.
Sound and Thoughtful!.......2007-07-18
Dr, Eisenson has written a wonderful synopsis of the Duke
Diet & Fitness Center program. I was fortunate to spend 2 weeks in Durham at the Center. It is a comprehensive and educational program. I lost 65 pounds and have kept it off for four years, using the hutritional, exercise, and medical advice I received at the Center. The book and online Duke program are wonderful touchstones to maintain my balance-and pick up some great recipes & workouts, too.
If you can't visit the Center, this book is an excellent way to begin taking care of yourself right now, at home.
I give this book my highest recommendation.
This is the inspiration!.......2007-07-08
I first heard about the Duke Diet and Fitness center while living in Raleigh-Durham North Carolina. The name Duke itself is synonymous with academic-health excellence.
The authors take a balanced and personalized approach to weight loss that covers nutrition, fitness and behavior, and I was pleased to learn that the plan was developed and refined over nearly four decades. This adds credibility to what the authors are presenting to the public.I like their approach, for one their diet is really a self care plan, and not a " lose 20 pounds by August" type of a product.
I have all along had the belief that all these health problems are a result of faulty conditioning, so it was a relief to see that these 2 doctors were emphasizing the teaching of healthy habits. It is that simple!
Other than teaching folks how to become more skilled at resisting temptation, they also teach the reader how to avoid being tempted in the first place. This is real talk!
The Duke behavioral plan was an eye opener, their major selling point to me was their focus in the way people think about food and themselves. They use this method to help the reader recognize self defeating patterns such as the " all or nothing" thinking, and the " I blew it , so I am a failure" mind set.
Martin Banks and Howard Eisenson are the perfect dream team. These two individuals were drawn to a place that encourages a multidisciplinary approach to this urgent and pressing health issue. Both of them acknowledge that that obesity is a complex problem that requires a multi disciplinary approach. I happen to share the same opinion regarding this issue!
The authors encourage and promote the empowering of the individual with knowledge and skills that will enable them to make the right choices when it comes to all nutrition and exercise. They focus on people making small but fundamental shifts in their lives, again not only in the areas of eating and activity, but also in their emotional or interpersonal patterns that may lead to overeating or under exercising.
This is a realistic book, an easy read for anyone who wants to get to bottom of having a healthy body and mind.
Rather a Disappointment.......2007-06-17
After hearing all the good things about this book I thought I'd find something of real value. Not so. It was pretty much a rehash of all I've read before.
If you're just starting out in your search for a healthful eating program, this might be fine. But who is America is just starting out!
Save your money.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Book!.......2007-07-10
I used this book and did well on the nationals... the secret is that about a quarter of the questions on the actual test have to do with eastern modalities .. namely shiatsu and the chinese KO cycle... go to wikipedia and look up the KO cycle ... there it has a chart shaped like a star with a circle around it... print it out and come up with a way to memorize the chart (my secret was FEM Wild Woman.. like Fire Earth Metal Water Wood) then make word associations to remember the colors, (like water is blue, wood comes from trees that have green leaves, fire is red, dirt is yellow with some other colors mixed in and it comes from the earth)directions, organs, tastes, energies (like corporal soul, spirit soul etc), and emotions associated with each element...it sounds goofy but this technique saved me...memorize where and what each meridian is... MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO THIS!!! all of the things that i just listed ARE on the test.. other than the origins and insertions of the muscles it's the hardest thing about the test... i was shocked at how much of the test was this stuff that i was never going to use anywhere else! there was also a tiny bit on the chakras (a 5 minute review is probably enough)... ).. and a lot of the thinking questions (don't worry they're not as bad as the book put out by the national board makes them out to be) like "if an elderly person has a raised hip which muscles are weakened?" this exact question isn't asked but there are many like that..
the questions in the book are very similar to those on the boards...if you can pass the tests in this book the first time you should be able to pass the nationals (i thought that i was going to have a heart attack the day before the test because i was so overwhelmed.. i really didn't think that i'd pass because i'd only been cramming 8 hours per day for 2 weeks and didn't feel prepared and i actually, not only passed, but did well) .. just study this book and you'll be fine
i just thought that i'd write a little something to help out other people going through what i just went though... don't panic... i passed the first time and i attended a school that taught to the state boards and had no eastern modalities in it's curriculm ... if you study this book and the stuff that i just listed you'll be fine.. my mom also read that chewing gum helps when test taking because it helps the left and right hemispheres of your brain communicate better and i swear that it worked! Good luck!
Great Study Tool.......2007-05-09
This book was a tremendous help to me and it was very easy to use. It helped me throughout my schooling and was a great study guide for nationals. I recommend it highly.
Extremely helpful for your preparation for the national exam.......2006-11-05
Very helpful book for preparation for the national exam for therapeutic massage and bodywork. Highly recommend it. Covers all the bases.
A great little review book.......2006-09-06
I really recommend buying this book. It's better than Mosby's Review, because it actually simplifies the concepts for you. I didn't get a feeling of being overwhelmed when I studied from this book. It's a good review for anatomy in general. It gives a great overview of each system, and I love that it went over contraindications for each disorder/disease too(very important). The only thing it is lacking would be information on Modalities. There just isn't enough. I got at least 4 or 5 questions(it may not seem like a lot, but it is, trust me) on Aromatherapy and essential oils (which ones do what, etc.) on my NCE, and if it weren't for my essential oil-addicted teacher in class, I wouldn't have had a clue about aromatherapy.
Overall though, this book was VERY helpful, just make sure to review Eastern Medicine and holistic medicine outside of this book.
This is not needed for the TN test for NCBTMB.......2006-08-14
Nothing from this book is on the test. Yes it is a good book but if you are looking for a good study guide to take the test in TN please look elsewhere I know it has cost me another 225.00 to retake the test!

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Comprehensive, fresh and multidisciplinary approach makes this a unique and useful text for students and young faculty. Chapters are for the most part well written and the book is nicely updated over previous addition.
Should be a part of the library for clinicians who care for children with congenital heart disease

Great information, but wear your glasses!.......2007-06-11
I purchased this book to review for the MOCA exam. It appears to have a great amount of pertinent information, however, the font is quite thin and vertically elongated, so I found it difficult to sit down and review from it. This will make a great reference for specific questions, but to sit down and just read, make sure your glasses are on. I am going to have to purchase a different review book because of this issue.
Good .......2007-05-15
This book is great for anesthesia beginners like me. Just it gives you a general idea about what anesthesiology is all about.

Great review book.......2007-03-09
I'm studying for Nurse Anesthesia boards and this book is very helpful. Clear and easy to read. I highly recommend it.
Excellent book for 4th year Medical Students.......2006-08-13
This book is extremely well written and has all the information you are most likely to be pimped on. When residents have seen me reading it they say this is one of the best books around and that this new edition is extremely well done with the use of color and organization of topics. Most of these same residents will whip out their old copies and ask if they can compare the two to see if its worth them buying the new edition.
If you already have a solid Physiology background, I suggest buying only this book and not wasting your time buying the baby Miller(Basics of Anesthesia).

Book Description
In her revealing bestseller Call Me Anna, Patty Duke shared her long-kept secret: the talented, Oscar-winning actress who won our hearts on The Patty Duke Show was suffering from a serious-but-treatable-mental illness called manic depression. For nearly twenty years, until she was correctly diagnosed at age thirty-five, she careened between periods of extreme euphoria and debilitating depression, prone to delusions and panic attacks, temper tantrums, spending sprees, and suicide attempts. Now in A Brilliant Madness Patty Duke joins with medical reporter Gloria Hochman to shed light on this powerful, paradoxical, and destructive illness. From what it's like to live with manic-depressive disorder to the latest findings on its most effective treatments, this compassionate and eloquent book provides profound insight into the challenge of mental illness. And though Patty's story, which ends in a newfound happiness with her cherished family, it offers hope for all those who suffer from mood disorders and for the family, friends, and physicians who love and care for them.

Fabulous!.......2007-10-05
This book is both entertaining and informative with loads of references and resources....I highly recommend it, especially for someone just starting the research into what this desease is all about.
Compelling and educational.......2007-07-02
I've always been a big fan of Patty Duke which is what prompted me to purchase the book. I knew a little bit about her illness from the movie "Call Me Anna" that came out in the eighties; however, nothing could've prepared me for the astonishing ways she pulled herself together after falling apart over and over again or for how long she dealt with her disorder until doctors were able to figure out what it was she had and how to treat it. Most importantly, this book teaches scientific information regarding neurotransmitters and mental illness. I can't believe how much I learned from this book while being entertained at the same time.
Excellent!!.......2007-06-02
This is an excellent book. It is more than Patty Duke's situation, which is very well presented in her own words. There are multiple examples of others experiences. It gave me a much greater understanding of my own experiences. It also helped de-stigmatized the disease for me. The single drawback is the discussion of Lithium; it was written before many of the current medications became available. This in no way detracts from the power of the book. I would, and have, high recommend it.
The Best book on Bipolar for the average reader.......2007-03-30
This book is one I recommend to any patient I suspect may have bipolar disorder in the differential. Patty Duke is a most lovable character who pours out her heart in an endearing autobiography. The chapters go back and forth between Patty Duke, telling her story (Which reads like an exciting novel) and a science writer who talks more in depth about bipolar- beautifully written throughout. This book is a must read, as well as a very fun read for anyone who think they may have bipolar or anyone who may love someone who has bipolar. Very inspiring and upbeat. Filled with humanness.
Also don't miss Kay Redfield Jameson's Autobiography An Unquiet Mind
Awsome Book for Families and Bi-Polar sufferers.......2007-01-20
This book gives you a real insight as to what families of bi-polar patients and the patient himself goes though. There is a great deal of information on medications and their effects, what is good, what is not, what works, what doesn't, etc.
The book includes names of organizations where one can turn to along with phone numbers, addresses of the organizations. I bought five books for my family and friends so they might understand this disorder with a broader perspective. My daughter has had manic depressive disorder for 8 years and this book has given us hope.

Learn how to:*Say "no" and save yourself from burnout*Tell others what you want, and actually receive it*Express anger in healing ways that maintain valued relationships*Respond effectively when irrationally criticized or attacked*Liberate your true self. Are you, like many of us, too nice for your own good? Thoughtful, Practical and Timeless.......2007-07-26
If you've ever had trouble being honest and nice at the same time, this is the book for you! Using personal stories and anecdotes, Duke Robinson illustrates the dangers and pitfalls of certain well-intended, polite behaviors; then gives practical techniques for becoming more authentic and improving our relationships. This is a guidebook to honest, respectful and effective communication.
The book reveals the self-defeating consequences of unconscious mistakes such as Trying to Be Perfect, Reasoning With Irrationality, Telling Little Lies and Rescuing Others. Principles such as Accepting Your Acceptance, Generating Empathy, Addressing Fear and Saying What You Want are the tools that will lead you forward. It takes conscious effort to break old habits, but it's well worth it. By understanding and practicing the solutions described, you will be able to live with greater integrity and joy, and you'll still be a nice person.
I have dozens of friends who have read this book and we've all been literally transformed by these timeless teachings. I've been reading and referring to it for many years, and will continue to consider it a valuable resource for difficult communication situations.
This book will enrich your life! Highly recommended.
OK but............2007-07-09
If you recognise yourself as the type of person this book is aimed at, then you may gain some help from the exercises and techniques contained within. However, it should be said that those exercises deal with 9 specific issues, some of which may not be applicable to you. For a more rounded overview of the subject I would recommend No More Mr. Nice Guy!, and whilst I realise this is aimed at men, I also believe the advise is far ranging enough for women to take something away from the book.
Women will relate to more than one chapter........2007-06-25
Pass this terrific book along to a female friend and point out some of the counterproductive "nice behaviors" captured in the chapter titles, such as Trying to be Perfect, Taking on Too Much, Not Saying What You Want, Suppressing Anger, and Giving Advice. Watch how she responds. Her curiosity will force her to turn immediately to any number of behaviors that give her trouble. This book is an easy read; you don't have to spend hours analyzing every word, and there's no psychobabble. The messages are quickly identifiable, clear and effective. Those of us--men as well as women--who nurture, caretake, volunteer, try to love unconditionally, and are "nice" people, don't always need to be rewarded for our giving, but the author convinces us that we need not create negative responses to our efforts to be helpful, set ourselves up for burnout or make relationship matters worse. How to do that isn't easy if you're typically "nice." The book's outlined steps, however, will help you, like they've helped me, to change your behavior and avoid the downsides of being nice ... while still being a nice person. I am grateful for the author's insight, care, clarity and wisdom. Is the book perfect in every way? No, and that's the important point--none of us is or has to be perfect all the time.
Simple & Effective.......2007-04-14
This book has made my life infinitely EASIER. Gave the answers I was looking for a long time. It tells you very simple (effective)ways to tackle those dilemmas. Among the 9 advices I chose 3 important ones for me:'
1.-Respect your stress tolerance level, learning HOW to say "no" sometimes.
2.-Be sincere and authentic in your relationships. It gives you TECHIQUES to tell people (in a polite way) what you want, can or can't do, what you actually expect from them, what wrong, bad things they have done to you.
3.-How to handle people that are mourning. We normally do the wrong thing.
In my case it was really worth the money. I used to be one of those TOO NICE People. Thanks DUKE ROBINSON!.
Former title was better........2007-04-08
The former title of this book was Good Intentions. From the information I gathered in the first few pages it was first published in 1997. I am not sure if that refers to the first publication under the current title or the previous one. I say that because the text feels more dated than just 10 years old.
I bought this book at Borders. The title caught my eye and a scan of the first few lines of each chapter confirmed I would like this book. As someone who is always accused of being too nice a guy and winding up burned more than once by relationships and employers, I thought I was on to something! Unfortunately I feel burned again by being naive enough to buy this book. There are those reading this that will say I should have done my homework first before making a purchase. Well, I'm sorry but I am not one of those jerks who sits in Barnes and Noble all day, taking up space and breaking in the backs of books I never intend to purchase. I wish those chairs would run a few megawatts of electricity through them every 10 minutes to get those creepy people out of the stores. They never buy anything and they smell bad! When my cell phone rings in the store, they have the nerve to "Shush" me. Hey people! This is a retail establishment! Buy something or move back into the library!
To give an example of what I am referring to in this book go to page 201, Mistake #8: Rescuing Others. The first page gives an example of a guy with a nephew who is having trouble staying in school or keeping a job. This is actually the chapter that made me buy the book. After getting a few pages into the chapter you realize they are only referring to people who try to rescue addicts and nothing else. My nephew is not an addict, but he otherwise fits the description in the example. Too bad this book didn't stick to its original title: Good Intentions. It is a better description of what is being preached here.
Mistake #7 is called Giving Advice. It tells you to never give advice, and lists several reasons why you should not. Ironically advice is what this book is based upon. The author is giving all of us poor "Nice" guys advice.
I believe the author had "good intentions" when he wrote this book. I believe the publisher had a great money making idea when he re-released this book under its new title.

Book Description
The Star--The public saw her as a gifted child star: the youngest actor to win an Oscar for her role as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker and the youngest actor to have a prime-time television series bearing her own name.
The Nightmare--What the public did not see was Anna Marie Duke, a young girl whose life changed forever at age seven when tyrannical mangers stripped her of nearly all that was familiar, beginning with her name. She was deprived of family and friends. Her every word was programmed, her every action monitored and criticized. She was fed liquor and prescription drugs, taught to lie to get work, and relentlessly drilled to win roles.
The Legend--Out of this nightmare emerged Patty Duke, a show business legend still searching for the child, Anna. She won three Emmy Awards and divorced three husbands. A starring role in Valley of the Dolls nearly ruined her career. She was notorious for wild spending sprees, turbulent liaisons, and an uncontrollable temper. Until a long hidden illness was diagnosed, and her amazing recovery recovery began.
The Triumph-- Call Me Anna is an American success story that grew out of a bizarre and desperate struggle for survival. A harrowing, ultimately triumphant story told by Patty Duke herself--wife, mother, political activist, President of the Screen Actors Guild, and at last, a happy, fulfilled woman whose miracle is her own life.
Customer Reviews:
Very Inspiring & Fascinating........2007-09-11
I bought this book years ago but re-read when a friend of mine was diagnosed with Manic-Depression/Bi-Polarism. The show business aspect of he story alone is quite involving as Ms. Duke realistcally depicts both the postive & negative aspects of being a celebrity at such a young age. Even though she became famous for being on Broadway & showing her incredible ability & dedication in portraying Helen Keller, she wasn't ,due her the Ross's (her business managers/surrogate parents) complete control over her, allowed to feel worthy of her sucess. Later on,her manic episodes are very well-depicted and her struggle to gain control over her life shows that in spite of her illness, her own personal strength, acting talent, motherhood(plus a wonderfully wry sense of humor) helped her overcome her demons and finally, get a proper diagnosis. Patty Duke shows herself to be an intelligent, honest woman and an inspiration to people with both Bi-polar disorder (& dysfunctional childhoods as well)
Call Me Anna: The Autobiography of Patty Duke.......2007-01-09
The book was very well written with great descriptions of what was going on during the times I remember seeing her movies and hearing/reading "entertainment news." I had no idea what she was going through, other than a couple of divorces. What a hard time she had growing up and what a survivor! This should give hope to those with bipolar disorder or family/friends of someone suffering from bipolar disorder.
Patty is a pioneer for telling her candid story.......2006-03-23
"Call Me Anna" is Patty's own story. Patty Duke wrote this book in 1988 long before it was fashionable to "tell all" like today's throwaway "stars" do.
Like millions of Americans, Patty Duke has always been one of my most cherished TV actresses because her talent is so deep and thought-provoking. But I never knew much about her, until I read "Call Me Anna."
"Call Me Anna" describes Patty's rise to TV stardom (playing the title character on the classic "Patty Duke Show") and subsequent fall, partly due to her illness. Patty talks candidly for the first time about the bridges she burned, and the people she hurt while she struggled with her disease, bipolar disorder.
Patty was one of the very first (if not the first?) bona fide celebrities to discuss their own mental illness. And she was a pioneer in the rights of the mentally ill, and for that she should be highly regarded.
I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys reading about TV stars, or anyone who cares about someone who is struggling with mental illness (especially bipolar disorder). I also recommend Patty's second book, "Brilliant Madness" which describes the disease in a more clinical manner.
Candid celebrity auto-bio, written with great character.......2005-05-20
Born poor and surrounded by addicts and illness, young Anna Marie Duke drifted into the arms of a society-busy married couple wanting to represent her in show business; they were odd social climbers who nonchalantly took away Duke's identity and gave her a made-up existence that crumbled once the photographers went home. A few of Duke's stories, while never less than candid and darkly amusing, are nearly too wild to believe(or maybe that's because they seem half-finished, as with the story of a motel molestation attempt or a day at a doctor's office where Patty's grandmother was deeply shaken after being forced into a strange contraption apparently meant to subdue her). Patty the Singer gets a colorful chapter(she hated her records for the UA label)and the chaos surrounding "Valley of the Dolls" is wonderfully captured. The final chapters skitter over her mental illness and a new marriage, and Patty doesn't delve much into her feelings as a woman(having her second child seemed to help her blossom, but we don't feel her passion, mostly her drive, her unfocused ambition and her neuroses). Still, she's a charming writer and has a sly way with a story(her roots are very important to her, and she's fine as a leader or a follower, but she never loses her vitality or funny malice).
Refreshingly unlike most celebrity "life stories".......2005-05-01
"What's in a name?" Shakespeare's question gets a different answer in this autobiography, when a little girl named Anna Marie Duke is told by her managers, "Anna Marie is dead. You're Patty now." It starts there, the stripping away of a child's identity so that the managers can rebuild her to their own specifications. The one thing that makes this child worth the effort, though, is there already: phenomenal acting talent. The kind of talent that makes Patty Duke a Broadway star at twelve, and an Oscar-winner at sixteen.
Alcoholism and mental illness surround her in childhood, and breaking away from her managers (who become her surrogate parents early on) just before her eighteenth birthday sets her adrift in a world for which she is totally unprepared. Pat, as she calls herself then, marries early and almost doesn't make the tricky transition from child star to adult actress. Disastrous career decisions, broken relationships, financial debacles - they're all here, and Ms. Duke recounts them without flinching. But running throughout her life story are other threads, the ones that keep her going until the manic depression that causes her roller coaster behavior is finally diagnosed and treated. This woman loves her craft, and she adores her children. Thanks to those two loves, she survives and eventually rediscovers herself. Not Patty; not Pat. Anna Marie.
So many celebrity biographies end with an overdose of pills or booze, or a car crash, or a razor blade in a bathtub. I found it refreshing to read this outwardly similar tale, which ends instead with a life rebuilt. With - corny as this is going to sound - a new beginning.
