Grant Morgan is one of London's most eligible and unattainable bachelors. He's also a powerful member of the Bow Street Runners, and when he's called to the waterfront late one night to investigate a drowning victim, Grant is stunned to recognize the face of Vivien Rose Duvall, a well-known woman of the night. He's even more startled when he realizes that she's alive. With no one to care for her, Grant carries Vivien to his home and revives her, only to learn that she is suffering from amnesia.

Vivien hesitantly accepts her handsome rescuer's claim that she is his mistress, despite her misgivings about her true identity. Nevertheless, she can't deny the marks on her throat that prove her near-drowning in the Thames was not an accident, and now she must trust the man who claims her as his paramour, for her life is in danger. As Grant searches for Vivien's attacker, the two find themselves falling in love, all the while struggling to stay one step ahead of the evil forces that will stop at nothing to see Vivien dead.

Kleypas's characters are not your run-of-the-mill Regency fare--Grant lacks a noble lineage while Vivien's "membership" in the demimonde is unusual to say the least--which makes them even more fascinating and thoroughly absorbing. Toss in a puzzling mystery to solve and an intriguing look inside the workings of the famous Bow Street Runners, and you've got a novel well worth reading. No wonder Lisa Kleypas's books are consistent bestsellers--you won't be able to put this one down.--Lois Faye Dyer

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not her Best.......2007-07-25

The problem with this book is that Kleypas has written dozens of novels that have slayed me with their stories--I adore her, and I'll read anything she's written...but this one just wasn't up to par. If you're going to read a Bow Street Runner book, read Worth any Price...a much better read...then come back to this one!

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Kleypas.......2007-06-27

I adored this book. Of course, I like every Kleypas book I've read. When the lady wakes up, she doesn't know who she is, where she is, or why someone was trying to kill her. The only person who claims to know her identity is the man protecting her - who wants to teach her a lesson, or so he thinks. Does she turn out to be who Morgan and society believes she is? Read it and find out. Loved the unexpected turns in the story.

3 out of 5 stars First in a series.......2007-05-20

Kleypas has a way of writing characters which behave well in one sense and off-beat in others.

Our heroine in this novel, told she is Vivian the courtesan, is refreshingly smart. She doesn't chase after the hero into dangerous situations or refuse to acknowledge her feelings for an absurd amount of time. I like her a great deal.

Her hero, Grant, is a Bow Street Runner bent on solving her case. He is sufficiently handsome and likeable, but he is incredibly dense when it comes to the heroine in the beginning, yet falls madly, deeply in love with her in the blink of an eye.

I enjoyed the novel while reading it and found the story a good one, if a trite cliched. If you've read romance at all you'll figure out the premise of the book quite quickly, and even the villain is a bit transparent.

I found myself wishing that Grant would have been a bit harder to win over. He was dead set against her in the beginning, and then poof! Like magic he sets all that aside for a nice romp in the proverbial hay. After that it's a hop skip and jump to true love.

Kleypas is not as witty in her writing as the authors I enjoy a great deal, but she is a good writer and keeps the flowery and purple prose to a minimum.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection, once again!!!!.......2006-10-01

I loved this story. Fell madly in love with Grant.

Very lovable characters. A well written plot with a good mystery that keeps you guessing.

And my favorite part of romances:Beautiful and very sensual love scenes.

Another perfect novel by Ms. Kleypas!!!

4 out of 5 stars First Bow Street Runner Novel.......2006-06-26

'Someone to Watch over Me' was a predictable novel but a great start the series. Grant Morgan finds Vivien (a high-priced prostitute) half dead and decided to solve or attempted murder and seek revenge as well. Some great twist - pick up the whole series and enjoy; Someone To Watch Over Me (1) Lady Sophia's Lover (2) and Worth Any Price (3rd and my favorite).

4 out of 5 stars Not her best, but I still love her........2007-09-11

If there is anyone who is new to McNaught and this has been your first novel and was disappointed (as I), please don't let it be the last from this author. That would be a tragedy. Check out PARADISE and read the 5-star rave reviews on here. All her historical romances are worth reading as well.

I wasn't overly impressed with this one but I honestly can't find myself rating anything she's written below 4 stars simply because I revere her a lot as a writer. Ms. McNaught is a phenomenal author and one can witness it in all of her previous novels. She has penned many beautiful, poignant love stories, and she won't ever change as my #1 favorite romance writer.

...however I felt something for this one was lacking.

Certain parts of the book seemed hastened while certain scenes seemed dragged out. Ms. McNaught is a great when it comes to building up the anticipation of the union between the hero and the heroine but I felt none in the case of Leigh and Michael; it was too abrupt. I was still rooting for Logan and Leigh to be reunited throughout much of the duration and had difficulty processing Michael into the picture until the very end but by then, the story was already ending. In short, their passion seemed somewhat forced, something that I never felt before in any of her previous novels where the flame steathily crept in with burning intensity and swept me right along.

On the positive side, it was a unique, well thought-out plot despite pitfalls along the way. I liked the way how she fused Leigh's and Michael's pasts together when she recognized "Falco" (reminiscent a la "Remember When"). Her secondary characters were brilliant and this is where her trademark JM writing shined. Sam Littleton was a far more intriguing character, who reminded me of a sassier and wittier version of Sloane Reynolds in "Night Whispers" but with the same warmth. And acting twice as a supporting character, Courtney Maitland never failed to amuse me with her no-nonsense humor and sass. What a character. I would love to see her become her own heroine in another novel.

.....

BUT. Most of her other contemporaries are all gems, especially Paradise, Perfect, and Double Standards. ALL her historical romances are treasures ("A Kingdom of Dreams" being my zenith favorite).

Despite some disappointments in this one, I still remain JM's loyal fan for life. She has written many splendid previous novels and I say this without any reservation.

5 out of 5 stars I do not understand overall lower customer average rating..........2007-04-12

I have now read all McNaughts books but Night Whispers. I hesitated reading "Someone to Watch over me" because of the 31/2 star rating, but I enjoy McNaught books over all other writers in this genre, so I figured it was better than most other books out there. This book, from beginning to end, surprised me and I do not understand the customers' overall lower rating. Thanks McNaught for intertwining a plot carefully tied to a love story worthy of reading both, regardless of plausibility...this is romance fiction afterall. I will order Night Whispers today.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!.......2007-03-08

A great read, definitely worth your time. The characters are developed well and the story is great all the way to the end! A keeper!!

5 out of 5 stars Mack McCord and Sam Littleton should have been main characters!.......2007-01-06

I've always admired JM for her ability to create realistic characters, but I don't know what happened to Michael Valente and Leigh Manning. Perhaps if Valente had first been introduced to us on his own turf rather than from law enforcement's point of view, he wouldn't have been so difficult to get a handle on. Since he was the obvious 'hero' of the book, I didn't like not knowing if he was good or bad or what.
He and Leigh both had such bland personalities, they never once seemed real; their dialogue, especially Leigh's was so robotic, so boring.
On the other hand, Mack McCord and Samantha Littleton were fabulously paired and both were extremely interesting. Sam was beautiful and her intelligence often came through in her subtle, classy manner. This was my 2nd reading of this novel, and I found that I wanted to reread it for these two secondary characters rather than for Valente and Leigh Manning.
McCord and Littleton make the book worthy of 5 stars.
And I can't forget Detective Shrader; he was great! The author did a great job with this character and Jason Solomon's character as well.

5 out of 5 stars Someone to Watch Over Me.......2007-01-03

The is one of my favorites. I love her characters. I like past characters appearing in her books. They are like family. I like the fact that she doesn't have to use vulgarity in her stories to tell a good, interesting and adult story. I love the mystery and the suspense. Of course, I have all of her books as I have followed her writing since the first historical. I don't know how she could ever top this story, but I'm impatiently waiting!! I hope it isn't 3 years again!

Book Description

Lily Brewster and her brother Robert were living high on the hog in Manhattan until the Crash of '29 took the family fortune south. Abruptly penniless, they have taken up residence in their late great-uncle Horatio's upstate estate on the banks of the Hudson and are slowly getting used to small-town life. But while tearing down a dilapidated ice house on the property, Robert inadvertently stumbles upon a well-dressed, mummified human corpse, the obvious victim of foul play. And as Lily works hand-in-hand with the disarmingly attractive Chief of Police howard Walker on the local front and Robert pursues the Manhattan connection in search of their well-heeled John Doe's identity, a second dead body turns up to complicate an already complexly murderous matter -- tying the Brewsters up in a knotty mess of deception and betrayal ... and leaving them dangerously exposed to the watchful eyes of a killer.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Someone to Watch Over Me.......2004-12-08

After the stock market crash in 1929, the wealthy teenagers Robert and Lily Brewster had no where to go. Both of their parents had died, and they were living off their parents' fortune. Robert and Lily were luckily taken in by their relatives, who are also wealthy and living in the Grace and Favor Mansion.
One day Robert was in his backyard when he discovers a dead body in the ice house. Robert wants to find out who this dead man is and traces all clues. Lily's new friend she met through a Lady's Group, Roxanne, is accused of killing her husband. The body of her husband has not been found, and Roxanne is the only suspect. Lily knows Roxanne would never do such a thing, but she has to prove it to the chief of police.
This book has a shocking ending, which no one will be able to predict. You don't really know the truth as no one is there to witness the event. Even if someone is a witness you don't always know if they are telling the truth. You never know the truth unless you are there, and you see a fact. The truth is the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. The characters in this novel are challenged to find the whole truth, because some forget to tell everything they know existed during the murders. This book is a fabulous mystery, and it will amaze you how everything is answered in the end.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointing read this time.......2004-08-07

The editorial reviews sum up the plot well, but don't say that most of the book has nothing to do with solving the murders. The whole bit about the editor's visit to Washington, the despressing discriptions of the government's treatment of the bonus marchers (some of them children) may appeal to history buffs, but had little to do with the crimes in upstate NY. Also the editor's involvement with one of the marchers,a young mother with two children had nothing at all to do with the murders. She was there in a wagon with a mule. I vaguely wondered about the historical accuracy of that. Would there be a mule pulled wagon on the highways between DC and NY in the 30's? But no matter - it was filler. I read another in this series earlier, In the Still of the Night, and enjoyed it, but will not seek out any more of them.

2 out of 5 stars Is this a mystery?.......2004-08-07

This book definitely lacks a substantial plot;it's not even a mystery at all. They solved the murder without any real clue. The murder was not an ingenious one;it looked as if it was done by a 3 year old kid.I almost laughed when they solved the "mystery".The dialouge falls flat, the characters are unreal and the murder was absolutely dumb.I am only 14 and i don't understand how adults can read this book.Jill Churchill cannot be compared to Agatha Christie, she still has a very long way to go.

5 out of 5 stars You Are There...........2004-03-22

In Jill Churchill's third book in the "Grace and Favor" Mystery series, you get a glimpse into the lives of those living through the depression. Yes, the series is meant to be a somewhat light mystery set during the depression-era, but it truly is so much more. You start to see how the depression caused a very wide gap in the social mores of the day when there were very strict adherences to the class structure. Approximately a third of the country was in dire poverty during the height of the depression. In "Someone to Watch Over Me," you start to see how so many of these social snobberies start to be abandoned by Lily and her brother, Robert Brewster. They let the town know that they are not rich, but have suffered complete financial ruin as most of the town has and that it has only been through the miraculous good fortune of being named in their Uncle's will that has enabled them to live in a mansion. Luckily, after a period of 10 years - they will inherit the estate as long as they meet the provisions of the will and earn their living.

Readers are in the midst of the Bonus Army March as they camp out in Washington, D.C. in 1932. Churchill recounts the historic adventure through the eyes of their newspaper editor, Jack Summer who travels to D.C. to get a first-hand glimpse of the protestors.

The papers proclaim that Henry Ford has cut wages and increased hours and hosed down disgruntled employees who are seeking better conditions. ( I was a little confused about this as I knew that in 1914, Ford was the first to establish a "minimum wage" law as he raised the pay from $2.50 to $5.00 - which was a fortune in those days for doing assembly work. Naturally, it helped him retain employees - but I doubt that in 1932 many people were buying automobiles and Ford was trying to keep the company afloat.) It would have been nice if this had been explained.

In between all the historical events, there are two murders and plenty of dialogue. You grow to like these characters more and more with each new book. This Churchill series is as good as it gets!

5 out of 5 stars Another good title in the Grace and Favor series!.......2002-09-13

Someone to Watch Over Me by Jill Churchill is the third book in her Grace and Favor series. The previous two titles, Anything Goes and In the Still of the Night were delightful mysteries and Someone to Watch Over Me is a welcome addition to this series.

Set during the Depression, the once wealthy Brother and sister Lily and Robert inherit their uncle's mansion on the Hudson River. But the inheritance is predicated on the English law of Grace and Favor where they must live in the house for a period of time before they can rightfully own it. And their uncle added one more element to this inheritance in that both Lily and Robert must have jobs in the area and live only in the house before they inherit anything. The house comes with an array of interesting people who work for them in addition to some of the townspeople who quickly become part of their lives.

Unfortunately, times are tough for all including Lily and Robert who few in the village know that their family was a casualty of the Depression early on and their fortune no longer exists. With both their parents now gone, they must figure out a way to make ends meet. They come up with one idea after another to bring in some much needed income while they also somehow become amateur detectives. As she did in her two previous books, Ms. Churchill presents first one murder victim and then another as Lily and Robert become entangled in solving the murder And not content to have only one main plot at work, Churchill fully explores the plight of the average person as they deal with the Depression. A most interesting part of the book is when the author describes the workers march on Washington, DC for wages as well as their living conditions in tent cities erected around this area.

While I enjoyed the mystery angle of this book, which is enough to satisfy most mystery readers, it is the description of the area around the Hudson and the characters that really interest me in these books. Now once again I am waiting for the next title in this series to find out what everyone is doing and how life has been treating all of them.

      Book Description

For a half century, Ben Webster, one of the "big three" of swing tenors-along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young-was one of the best-known and most popular saxophonists.

Early in his career, Webster worked with many of the greatest orchestras of the time, including those led by Willie Bryant, Cab Calloway, Benny Carter, Fletcher Henderson, Andy Kirk, Bennie Moten, and Teddy Wilson. In 1940 Webster became Duke Ellington's first major tenor soloist, and during the next three years he played on many famous recordings, including "Cotton Tail."

Someone to Watch Over Me tells, for the first time, the complete story of Ben Webster's brilliant and troubled career. For this comprehensive study of Webster, author Frank Büchmann-Møller interviewed more than fifty people in the United States and Europe, and he includes numerous translated excerpts from European periodicals and newspapers, none previously available in English. In addition, the author studies every known Webster recording and film, including many private recordings from Webster's home collection not available to the public.

Exhaustively researched, this is a much needed and long overdue study of the life and music of one of jazz's most important artists.

An Englishman, an Irishman and an American are locked up together in a cell in the Middle East. As victims of political action, powerless to initiate change, what can they do? How do they live and survive?

Frank McGuinness's new play, introduced by Brian Keenan, explores the daily crisis endured by hostages whose strength comes from communication, both subtle and mundane, from humor, wit and faith.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An emotional rollercoaster.......2000-04-03

"There were three bollocks in a cell in Lebanon. An Englishman, an Irishman, and an American. Why they were in that cell was anybody's guess, and why they were in Lebanon was their own guess." (p. 17)

This is how one of the characters describes their own situation. It sounds like the beginning of a joke and indeed, humour-light hearted as well as black-gets its fair share in McGuinness play. But it never truly manages to conceal the desperateness of their situation.

Having been kidnapped for political reasons unknown to them, by people who are only referred to as 'Arabs' or 'the Enemy', the three hostages have to cope with the daily challenge of fear and monotony. While their captor's strength 'depends on silence' as one of the characters observes, their own depends on communication. There are savage fights between the three as well as gentle understanding, uproarious laughter and deep grief. The play takes the audience on a rollercoaster journey through the horrors of captivity, the balm of memory and the unbreakable strength of friendships forged in dire circumstance.

The play is inspired by the true story of Brian Keenan from Northern Ireland, who was kidnapped in 1986 shortly after taking up his position as a lecturer of English at the American University in Beirut. He was released in 1990 after talks between the Irish and the Iranian government. Most of the four years and five months in Lebanese captivity he spent together with John McCarthy, a British journalist. McCarthy had in fact come to Beirut to make a documentary about the hostage situation and was kidnapped shortly after Brian Keenan. The two men became close friends. When Brian Keenan was released he said that to leave behind his co-hostage was 'like losing an arm'. John McCarthy was not released until August 1991 after more than five years in captivity.

Teresa Hill is a wonderful auther! This first in a series is the story of Jax, the oldest of 4 siblings. It is a little more spiritual and conservative than many of her books. Wonderful story!

      Book Description

Richard Bausch is a master of the intimate moment, of the ways we seek to make lasting connections to one another and to the world. Gew writers evoke the complexities of love as subtly, and few capture the poignancy of the sudden insight or the rhythms of ordinary conversation with such delicacy and humor. To read these twelve stories--of love and loss, of families and strangers, of small moments and enormous epiphanies--is to be reminded again of the power of short fiction to thrill and move us, to make us laugh, or cry. In these profound glimpses into the private fears, joys, and sorrows of people we know, we find revealed a whole range of human experience, told with extraordinary force, clarity, and compassion.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rich Slices of Modern Life.......2003-02-19

Richard Bausch in these stories--of an older men with younger women, of a woman recovering from a dysfunctional relationship who hooks up with a horrible golfer who persuades himself he is good, of a man with low self-esteem who stumbles out of a bar drunk one morning to save a busload of children, of a man who wins the lottery only to face the final anomie of life as loss--takes somewhat downtrodden and mundane middle-to-lower class characters and reveals them in their secret glory. He has a way of fully seizing an everyday situation and revealing to us its depths, sometimes switching character point of view within the same story. The stories have the opposite effect of Chinese food according to the culinary cliche: they may seem on the light side while being mentally digested, but in retrospect they confer literary nutrition--staying, like the best fiction, with you long after the book is closed; these then are stories whose characters, if not the most memorable, are so real, so deeply sliced from the pie of modern American life, that their quandries and partial resolutions, their fictional or fictionalized lives, tend to merge with one's own memories.

      5 out of 5 stars A Master Storyteller.......2002-01-27

I first heard of Richard Bausch when he praised some work of Janis Ian's. I went to see what kind of writer he was, and was pleasantly informed. He really develops his characters. They are real to the reader, and you can be sympathetic toward them even as they bumble and stumble through life ... just like we all do. Not alot of fun & happy endings here, but the stories will touch your heart in a good way.

5 out of 5 stars Grief that makes you happy?.......2000-08-29

Seems an oxymoron, but anyone who's read other books by Bausch knows it isn't. Bausch portrays deeply painful situations with humor and a sense of abiding compassion for his characters. You will put this book down in pain, both in empathy for its characters and in sorrow that it's over. A wonderful read.

      3 out of 5 stars Average.......2000-07-10

The high points in this book of stories were attained with some perceptive insights about human relations and the human condition. However, they were not sufficient to overcome an average book.

      5 out of 5 stars Chaotic relations.......2000-06-03

Bausch's stories provide the certainty that you can eavesdrop on any life and find something worth hearing. The stories may not cheer you up, but they'll make you glad you read them.

      Book Description

In the UK alone there are more godparents in existence than parents. Year after year hundreds of thousands of responsible adults get asked to become godparents and accept without quite knowing what exactly is expected of them and how they might best try and fulfill the role. Someone to watch over me sets out to explain where the tradition of godparents comes from, what is involved in being a godparent, how parents should choose godparents for their children and provide ideas and resources for how godparents can perform the role better. Desmond Tutu in the foreword says, "Godparents form part of the community looking to guard the child and help him or her realise their full potential. This book provides practical ways to assist parents in choosing the godparents for their children - people who can play a vital role in the child's growth. It also provides guidance and ideas to help godparents perform the role in a very busy world where the building of relationships is ever important " The decline of extended families, increased social mobility and the concomitant impermanence of social networks, frequent break-up of marriages etc. leads to a greater need for godparents in the life of a child than ever before. Underlying this book is the strong belief held by the authors that godparenting is an enriching aspect of life today and in the 21st century has an ever important role to play.
