Haddock is introduced in the Golden Claws.......2007-08-23
Thundering Typhoons!! Had been trying to get my hands on this issue as it introduces my fave. character!! It compliments the package well because the issues are in a sequence and one ends up getting more of blistering barnacles! I would recommend this to Haddock's admiration club and otherwise as well!
A little disappointing.......2007-02-07
The quality of the printing is far from perfect. It smooches on several pages. Also, I read the French version first and the English one is, in my opinion, rather lame. A lot of work would need to be done to improve it.
Tintin on his adventures!.......2007-01-21
I have read many Tintin adventures and love them all. Herge can make very funny adventure stories.
In the book, The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin meets Captain Haddock. Captain Haddok loves whisky. Professor Calculus is not here. He comes in Red Rackham's treasure.

Volume 3: The Crab With the Golden Claws (1942), The Shooting Star (1942), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943). This is the third instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.
As I mentioned in my review for Volume 1, as a child I read these stories in no particular order. So, when reading The Crab With the Golden Claws, I was surprised to see Captain Haddock in such a pitiable state, having made his acquaintance in later adventures...
But this is where he is introduced, and the friendship that develops between Haddock and Tintin not only allows the alcoholic captain to bloom, it lifts the curtain on one of the most entertaining, impulsive (Haddock = ad hoc, get it? In French, the pronunciation of the two is exactly the same...), flawed, and in essence loyal, good hearted and lovable characters in all comicdom. His irascible nature will be abundantly prodded with insufferable foils (Wagg, Abdullah, Castafiore, the Thom(p)sons, and sundry villains) throughout the series. We also meet the sinister Allan for the first time. The story takes place in Morocco, and the child sees yet more of our planet's vistas, while the adult continues to revel in Hergé's textured adventures and detailed settings, as well as a terrifying dream sequence.
Michael Farr's "Tintin: The Complete Companion" (highly recommended), gives a glimpse at why Tintin did not take in the USA as it did in the rest of the world, and that has to do with a couple of panels from The Shooting Star. Though with some brilliant sequences, such as the cinematic seasickness scene, it is not as captivating as the usual Tintin standard, but again, one does not want to miss a single adventure.
The Secret of the Unicorn has a number of threads, one of which develops into the sequel, Red Rackham's Treasure.

When Wally West learns The Secret of Barry Allen, it turns out to be more than he wanted. After all, the main thing on his mind is why his wife, Linda, has left, apparently a repercussion of the Spectre's attempt to reestablish Wally's secret identity by wiping it from everyone's minds. That also causes problems with the Justice League, who are now wondering why they no longer know who their teammate is. And that's not even mentioning the rogues' gallery of villains plotting to bring the Flash down. The three-part title story involves a crossover with the famous Identity Crisis story line, and the moral/ethical dilemma surrounding what the League did to Doctor Light proves to be only part of the story. Collects Flash issues 207-211 and 213-217. --David Horiuchi

Over Hyped.......2006-01-24
The secret of Barry Allen is nothing but disappointing.
For those of us who witnessed the birth of the Silver Age Flash we thought there would be some earth-shaking revelation to reveal the hero's feet of clay. Sad to say his secret is no more disturbing than the announcement that he didn't floss after every meal.
Batman refers to Superman as a 'boy scout' but the real boy scout, the hero who didn't curse or spit, was Barry Allen's Flash.
The artwork was nice, but the plot was non-existant and unresolved. This added nothing to the mythos and was a waste of paper and ink. Shame on you DC
Complements Identity crisis. Weak Flash story.........2006-01-13
This book probably reads better in continuity with the Identity crisis than stand alone. If you've read Identity crisis, the 'surprise' ending is already lost and makes this book not that much fun to read anymore. Does not carry the weight of the JSA books.
Just to counter-balance the idiocy of "John Q. Public".......2005-10-15
It's sad that some readers can't accept the idea of heroes not always doing the right thing. I personally find that it makes the more human. I applaud DC for trying to shake up their status-quo, while Marvel plays catch-up.
STRONG COMPLEMENT TO IDENTITY CRISIS.......2005-09-14
The Secret of Barry Allen is a trade paperback collecting issues #207 - 211 & 213 - 217 in this 240 page volume, coinciding with the Identity Crisis storyline which will be arriving in a hardcover collection very soon. Wally West has been granted a boon by the Spectre to have knowledge of his true identity totally erased from the world...and not only from the average man on the street, but EVERYONE, including the JLA. This was as a result of the events of Identity Crisis where someone (can't give that away) was targeting and murdering the family members of several superheroes including Sue Dibney, the wife of The Elongated Man.
As the story opens, Wally's wife Linda has left him to have some time for herself to think about the recent events as the wife of a hero. Meanwhile the Flash has no time to rest as a parade in his honor is interrupted by several members of his rogue's gallery. Now one thing I always loved about the Flash was his colorful and somewhat eccentric lineup of villains. Only Batman can boast a more bizarre group of villains. Plunder, Trickster II, Tarpit, and Abra Kadabra bust up the parade festivities and have Wally helpless until help arrive in the form of Kid Flash and Jay Garrick, the Golden Age Flash.
Wally eventually goes before the JLA to find out just what happened to their memories of Barry Allen, and who is wearing the mask of the Flash now. Wally walks out on the league, leading to one of those great Superman/Flash races in shades of the Silver Age as Superman demands to know the truth and what the Flash is running from. Secrets are revealed on many levels as Wally soon learns (again apparently) what the JLA began doing to villains such as Dr. Light, essentially using Zatanna's magic to lobotomize them. They took it one step further with The Top, altering his mind to try and turn him good. It works for awhile but soon drives the Top insane. This leads to a climactic battle between The Top, Flash, and Zatanna.
Wally once again must come to grips with what the league did. If you read Identity Crisis you know that Wally was the most outspoken about what some of the JLAers did and how it was kept a secret from other members, specifically Superman and Batman. Geoff Johns delivers a multi-layered plot that works with and expands on the story from Identity Crisis. On top of all this, Flash's Rogues Gallery is dealing with the death of Captain Boomerang and the revelation that he had a son who has now taken up his father's mantle. Add to this that some former members of the Rogues (Pied Piper, Trickster I, and Heatwave) are now working for the FBI and going after their former associates and another subplot involving Zoom and there is a lot packed into this one story. If there is a weakness it's perhaps that Johns is guilty of throwing too much at readers and there are loose ends left unresolved at the books conclusion. That said, it's a strong story and shows how Wally has truly matured (It has been some 20 years since he took over as The Flash). The art of Howard Porter and Livesay is first-rate without trying to be over-powering to the story. A cover gallery featuring the brilliant work of Michael Turner is included.

Next building block in the continuing saga of the Flash.......2005-09-12
In contradiction to the other reviewers of this book, I really enjoyed the book. The last couple of year's writer Geoff Johns is creating an epic Flash saga. This volume continues to pick up steam and I really looking forward to the pay-off of this saga in the next volume. As a stand-alone volume, the book offers a very entertaining and dramatic story. The tie-in with Identity Crisis is handled well and doesn't hinder the reading experience. This volume is not the ideal book to pick up by newbies. I suggest to take the earlier volumes like Blood will run, etc.

Maybe Its Just Me..........2007-01-10
But I didn't really like this antholegie. I bought this book because of all of the great reviews, some by reviewers I usually agree with, and work by some familiar authors.
Flint's Fuse by Sandy Fraiser is about a woman who begins a sexual relationship with her kidnapper. Flint was paid by Dana's father to kidnap her, and she will do anything to get away. I liked Flint, he is the strong silent, brooding type, but Dana is fairly typicall spoiled, rich girl. The sex scenes are well done and Flint is a good leading man. 3.5 Stars
Love's Prisoner by MaryJanice Davidson is the first Wyndham werewolves story. I usually like Davidson for her humor and fun characters, and was looking forward to reading about Michael and Jeannie's story, they are usually a highlight in the other Wyndham werewolves stories (which are romance not erotica). Jeannie and Michael meet when they are trapped in an elevator together. Michael can smell that she is his mate and that she is fertile, as a result he can't control himself but does save her life when the elevator begins to fall. Jeannie is torn about the man who just saved her life, he forced her and then saved her life. So she is justifiably shocked when he shows up at her door alive, and telling her that she is pregnant with a werewolf hier so she must come live with him so that he can protect her from rival werewolves. This story was lacking in Davidson's usuall humor and I didn't care for the quasi rapes. 2 Stars
The Education of Miss Felicity Wells by Alice Gaines-Is the only of the four stories with a historic setting. Felicity wants to be know how to satisfy her future husband, to prevent him from taking a mistress, like most men of her class. Dr. Marcus Slade is a notorious Boston rake and a very unsuitable associate for a proper Brahmin virgin like Frlicity. How can he resist such an interesting proposal? I thought this sounded like such an interesting premise but it was actually kind of boring. I have read a couple of other things by Alice Gaines, her writing just doesn't seem to be for me. Why does she use the nickname Priapus in all of her writing? It was a cute mythological refrence, the first time. 2 Stars
The last story is Angela Knight's A Canidate for Kiss. Her vampire and mageverse tales are usually at least memorable, and even when the plots are silly the sex is good. But I had to check the back cover to even remeber this story, a definate first for Knight. It is about a vampire secret agent named Gabriel and Dana a small town reporter on the trail of an amazing story, who finds an even more unbelievable one in Gabriel. Gabriel is basically a one man black ops hitman, and he has been in the intellegence game long before the CIA or NSA, but Dana is a first for him. She is the first person he has ever been tempted to turn. Another fun premise that didn't come together for me, but die hard Knight fans will probably enjoy or just want it to round out thier collections. Since I couldn't remeber it after I read it 2 Stars.
Great Wyndham Werewolf Story.......2006-04-22
This is worth buying and keeping just for the Wyndham werewolf story, which is the beginning of that series. I agree with another reviewer that the story has one scene of forced sex (used as a punishment) which is disturbing. I've read the story a couple of times now, sometimes I just skip that scene but sometimes not. What I discovered (and missed the first reading due to the sheer ick factor) was that Michael was following werewolf protocol and was deeply remorseful following the incident. Doesn't make it right by any stretch, but there ya go. I thought Michael made a great werewolf Alpha hero (aside from the aforementioned incident) and that he and Jeannie were great together. Lots of MJ Davidson's trademark humor and a good intro to the Wyndham clan of characters. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for another full-length story!
As noted in other reviews, there's a second novella (Secrets Vol. 8, I think) which is not as good and a full-length novel, "Derik's Bane" which is a knock-out. If the incident that shall not be named seems too disturbing for you, read "Derik's Bane." It's a hoot! There's a new collection (released 4/2006), "Undead and Loving It," which is four short stories about werewolves. Apparently three were previously published --- I missed them --- and one is new. The new one brings together a Wyndham werewolf with Betsy the Vampire Queen.
Crouching Werewolf, Leaping Vampire.......2005-04-18
(...)
Red Sage stories are about when men were men and women were captured, conquered, and captivated... and loved it. And I love it. If instead you like anemic, politically correct feminist-inspired relationships, you'll hate these stories... unless you find yourself surrendering to them.
Flint's Fuse by Sandy Fraser
This is spicey like raw habeñero is spicey! Man captures girl (with her father's blessing, no less) and manages to subjugate the little witch. Wonderful.
Love's Prisoner by MaryJanice Davidson
I seldom find werewolves endearing, but this story is about as clever as it gets, and chills and excitement have little to do with fright. I might ever start to like fur. Frankly, I would rate it as the ONLY werewolf story worth reading.
The Education of Miss Felicity Wells by Alice Gaines
This Victoriana story could have- should have- been my very favorite, except for one flaw, not unlike a lover pulling away too soon. The story is darn close to original Victorian erotica, except they would not have had the flaw... Okay, my one and only problem (if I can word this carefully) is that when Miss Felicity finally 'does' Marcus Slade, I began drooling. And then... and then before she (and I) finally get our first taste of him, they pull apart, (...) interruptus! That was overly delicate even for Victorian sensibilities and what kind of education is that! Red Sage promises explicit, so give us explicit!
A Candidate for the Kiss by Angela Knight
I like Vampires even less than I do werewolves, and to get this one, you have to accept that vampires work for the FBI. That's silly, we know they would be much better in the IRS. The story I would give only 2 stars but the sex gets 7, so it balances out.
Packs the necessary punch--but not for the sqeamish.......2005-03-18
I rank this volume of Secrets right up there with volume 8 (see my other review). This is potent, heady erotica. I was profoundly affected by MJD's Love's Prisoner story, and I haven't been able to purge the urge to revisit it. Although it touches on a VERY sensitive subject, it does so with consummate finesse, never straying from its intended purpose. It's the first time I've ever witnessed a writer handle this subject so deftly in a work of fiction, and for that alone MJD's accolades are very well earned.
The other stories in this volume are also welcome diversions, but I don't reach for any compilation of erotic fiction if it doesn't have Mary Janice Davidson's name on the cover. For my money, her work defines the standard.
This volume is worth the cover price for Love's Prisoner ALONE. Buy it.
Some Davidson fans might be disappointed..........2005-01-28
I've read just about everything of MaryJanice Davidson's that I could get my hands on, the past year or so. I like her snappy dialogue and her great characters. I picked up Secrets vol 6 solely because of a Davidson story.
I just wanted to warn other Davidson fans that this story is a lot darker than most of her stories, and includes a very disturbing scene of forced sex. I like werewolf stories, in general, and I really liked "Derik's Bane," the third in the series (just out as a full-length novel), but I found this one disturbing. I found little about the hero to like (he was a little too alpha) and had a difficult time believing the heroine would develop any softer feelings for him.
If you're a fan of the sensual type story, then this is probably a good anthology for you, as other reviews attest. But if you're a Davidson fan looking for something like "Royal Treatment" or the "Undead" books, you may want to approach this volume with some caution.

Book Description
The Soviet military concept of operational art and the associated theories such as 'war of annihilation', 'deep battle' deep operations', have fascinated Western observers for more than four decades. However, more often than not the Soviet government has frustrated Western onlookers by hiding their military-theoretical work behind a veil of secrecy. Here that veil is torn away to reveal these imaginative Soviet military theories in the words of those who created them in peacetime and applied them in war.
This collection of texts has been taken from formerly classified material in the official Red Army General Staff journal 'Military Thought'. The results are two volumes of great scope based on archival evidence. They stand as a compulsory reference point for anyone with an interest in the operational endeavours of the Soviet Army from the 1920's onward.

LIES, LIES, DECEPTION, DELUSIONS followed by more LIES!!!.......2001-07-12
I read this book seeking more insight on this most famous of espionage cases. What I obtained, instead, was the most deceitful pack of dishonest manure that I have ever read. And the lies were not even creative ones. Moscow doesn't even pretend that they were not guilty!!! How this book could have been written after the opening of the sealed FBI records, the release of the Venona transcripts, and their subsequent corroboration by the Soviet archives (which unanimously refute every one of Charmichael's inane points) is beyond comprehension. Or maybe the latest leftist strategy is designed to convince us that Stalin really was successful in purging anyone with a semblance of intelligence.
A long list of nonsense.......1999-09-08
The author had the subject for a very good book here. How was the Rosenberg case presented, by whom, for what purposes? But she couldn't bring herself to write that book. She'd have had to write about the use of the Rosenberg Case to justify Stalinism.
Instead, she wrote a book about how evil the U.S. was, to resist Stalin, and how, as a part of that evil effort, two innocent leftists named Rosenberg were framed for espionage and executed. Not that she actually believes that. It's just that the truth (they were guilty) is too painful.
Ms. Carmichael's book is fairly laughable. She tells us that "of course" the Soviet Union was spying on the U.S and Britain throughout World War II, both in general and in regard to the A-bomb project. I guess were not supposed to think about the Soviet Union's vociferous denials. Then she refers you, for further information, to a volume(THE ATOM SPY HOAX)that explicitly denies any such espionage ever occured -- a book she terms "well researched." Then she'll remind us that in matters of espionage, you can never come to any firm conclusions, just before tossing off yet another firm conclusion of her own.
If you know enough about the Rosenberg case to tell when she's wrong, or making things up, you don't need this book. If you don't know enough, you especially don't need this book.
Students of the case should go read THE FBI-KGB WAR or THE ROSENBERG FILE if they're interested in what really happened. And a serious author should write about the way the Rosenberg case was used, and by whom, and for what purposes ... but to do that, he or she will have to start by pointing out that the Rosenbergs were guilty, and that there was never a reasonable doubt about it.
