And furthermore, they know that the Jackal wants: a final confrontation with Bourne. Now David Webb, professor of Oriental studies, husband, and father, must do what he hoped he would never have to do again—assume the terrible identity of Jason Bourne. 2 out of 5 stars Worst of the Trilogy.......2007-10-01

Okay, the movies are entirely different from the books. The first book rocked. The second was pretty good. "Ultimatum" is a overwritten waste of time. Bourne makes some pretty stupid mistakes, the plot twists fall on the side of unbelievable, and the dialogue is awful. This hardly seems like the same author.

4 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Carlos the Jackal isn't greedy, he just wants a couple of things before he shuffles off the mortal coil.

Kill Jason Bourne, and blow the you know what out out of the Russian training facility that spawned him, and then disowned him later on.

Bourne and the KGB must work together to play Hunt the Jackal.

I can't believe I actually finished this book. It was very repetitive and rather boring, although I would say the last ~50 pages were the most suspenseful. Maybe that's because I knew I was finally at the end of the book and I was excited to get it over with. I kept waiting for it to get better; never did. Plus the overuse of italicized words drove me nuts.

1 out of 5 stars nothing like the movie of the same title -.......2007-08-11

very disappointing. Only the title of the book, was used for the Bourne Ultimatum movie.

The author is NOT Robert Ludlum, although his name is plastered all over the cover for advertising purposes.

The author who does write the book does a terrible job of encapulating technical details. He obviously has not done enough research on the main characters, the technical gadgets and the finer details of the "spy" items in the book. For example, he tries to describe a "drug runner" offshore speedboat, and COMPLETELY misses "the boat" on what the capabilities are, the cost of the boat, and the technical aspects of it.

It is obvious the author of this novel sits behind a chair and lives out his life through his TV set and picture books.

1 out of 5 stars Saw the Movie First.......2007-08-11

Read about 100 pages and understand completely why the writers of the movies wanted no parts of this book. Currently I am on page 500. This book is better than Ambien and Lunesta combined.

I agree with some of the other comments here, I seriously doubt he wrote this one having read some of his earlier work.

Please 1 cent is not worth it unless they paid you to ship it out of their warehouse.

OK so it took me 3 weeks to finish the last 109 pages. This book is about 509 pages too long. You know the end by page 5 and this convoluted novel is so one dimensional I am surprised that it resides in our dimension. GOD AWFUL.

Book Description

Eight CDs, 9 hrs.
performances by Darren McGavin

THE BOURNE IDENTITY-He is a man with an unknown past and an uncertain future. A man dragged from the sea riddled with bullets, his face altered by plastic surgery-a man bearing the dubious identity of Jason Bourne. Now he is running for his life, the target of professional assassins, at the center of a maddening deadly puzzle. Who is Jason Bourne? To answer that question, he must find the secret buried deep in his own past. And the only one who can help him is a beautiful stranger-the woman who once would do anything to escape him.

THE BOURNE SUPREMECY-The Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China is brutally slain in a Kowloon cabaret, and all the clues point to the legendary assassin, Jason Bourne. But Bourne never existed! The name was created as a cover for ace agent David Webb on his search for the notorious killer Carlos. Now someone else has resurrected the Bourne identity, and Webb is forced to use his murderous skills to stop him. Because once again, like a nightmare relived, the woman he loves is suddenly torn from his life. To find her, to trap his own imposter, Webb must launch a desperate odyssey into the killing fields of international espionage.

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM-Thirteen years have passed since David Webb was last forced to assume the alias of the assassin Jason Bourne. Thirteen blissfully peaceful years: time enough to raise a family with his wife Marie, time enough to begin to put the violence and betrayal of the past behind him. Now with one phone call Webb is thrust back into the madness. His greatest enemy, Carlos, is hunting again-determined to stalk and eliminate the one man whose reputation as an assassin approaches his own, a determination that promises pain and death for David Webb and those who mean the world to him.

These CD's are great. I have most of Ludlums books but it is nice to be able to listen in the car or at home without having to look for the book.

4 out of 5 stars Book or Movie?.......2007-05-16

Well the book is far superior to the simple plots of the movies. But there is Matt Damon....
This version of the "Bourne Trilogy" gets a lively reading by Darren McGavin. It will keep you at the edge of your seat.
So, for eye candy go see the movies....
For the edge of your seat reading stick with the book.

1 out of 5 stars How is it possible to botch a book on tape?.......2005-04-12

I thought it wasn't possible, but Darren McGavin managed it. He mumbles, yes actaully mumbles his way through a performance for which the sole qualification is elocution. I don't care if he played the dad in Billy Madison. This is doubly frustrating, as the volumes are so heavily abridged, that missing a line is like missing 100 pages from the printed work. Oh yeah, and the musical cues dispersed throughout the reading to "heighten the tension" are stupid, just plain dumb.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read.......2007-05-18

I liked reading this book very much, the characters were likeable and the story didn't drag. It was refreshing to read a book where the hero didn't blackmail the heroine into marriage after learning of her pregnancy. The hero was likeable because he supported the heroine and allowed her to get to know him, so that love would grow realistically.

There does seem to be a recurring theme in Helen Bianchin books of a "crazy" ex girlfriend (which in this case was only in her head) but I do think it makes the book more interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Mommy to be and Daddy Make 3.......2007-02-24

University student Mia had always told her sister that she would remain a virgin until marriage. So when she travels on holiday to see her sister, who's divorced and has a 10-year-old son, and drops the bombshell that she's pregnant, sis rightfully wonders what's up: was she raped, or is she engaged to marry this guy?
Not only no, but she didn't even get the man's name. Their eyes met across a crowded room and next thing you know they're ripping each other's clothes off in a hotel room.
Understandably, after a night of debauchery Mia is shocked and disgusted at her behavior and sneaks out of the hotel room. So imagine her surprise when she visits a college friend's home for dinner and meets his older brother: Nikolos, her one-night stand.
Only Nikolos has done everything to try to find his mystery woman for whom he fell like a giant redwood and he has absolutely no intention of letting her get away this time. Thankfully for Helen Bianchin fans, Nikolos does not vow revenge, blackmail Mia into his bed, force her to marry him by threatening to put her sister and nephew in the poorhouse or any of the other ways some of these books get the couple together. Instead, he sets out to court her and makes any sane woman reading this story fall at least a little bit in love with him.
Don't know why one of these reviewers thought the book was horrid. To each his own, I guess. He not only invites Mia out, but also her sister and nephew and shows what great daddy material he'll be by taking the boy under his wing.
Although they don't wind up right back in the sack with one another, scorching hot love scenes eventually ensue once Mia realizes she's fighting a losing fight. And Nikolos is soooooo wonderful, so WHY exactly was it she was resisting his offer of marriage, again? :)
One of the things I liked best about this book is that we get to read the hero's view: of his admiration, love for her. It's just a couple of sentences here and there, but it gives the reader his perspective. Nothing more frustrating than having to find out how he feels in the last 3 pages of one of these books.
Sadly, we have to deal with another of Ms. Bianchin's psycho-woman-who's-about-to-boil-a-bunny-rabbit-'cause-she's-crazy-about-the-hero-and-if-she-can't-have-him-no-one-else-can characters. I'd have given this book 4 stars if only she'd left out this lunatic. Another odd thing about this story: once the heroine has visited a dr. to have her pregnancy confirmed (this happens before we even "meet" Mia), she never visits a doctor while she's on holiday. And Nikolos does not cajole her into finding a doctor so he can ask questions about his honey bunch and his bambino. I found that odd.
Instead of including the wacky woman, I think Ms. Bianchin should have introduced a few doctor visits, maybe had Mia befriending another expectant Mom in the waiting room, cute scenes with Nikolos regarding the doctor visits and so on.
Other good Bianchin books: "The Marriage Campaign," "Purchased by the Billionaire," "Forgotten Husband," "The Husband Assignment," "The Greek Bridegroom," "The Marriage Arrangement," or "The Wedding Ultimatum." Although "Pregnancy Ultimatum" is good, any of these are much better examples of Bianchin's significant talents.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! A must read!.......2005-09-28

I loved this book! It has the classic love/hate relationship. A headstrong woman who's found herself pregnant after a one night stand and she's trying to ignore the sexual attraction to the father-to-be.. and he's trying to win her trust and love the whole time! And don't forget the meddlesome sister trying to do whatever she can to throw the 2 parents-to-be together to make them fall in love! Gotta love it!

I started this book and put it down after a couple of pages. Then, I picked it up 2 days ago and I couldn't put it down. Both the heroine and the hero are very likeable. It's unlike most other Harlequin's that I've read.

1 out of 5 stars Do not waste your time and money.......2003-12-02

Due to the reviews, I bought the book and regreted it. I did not like the couple and I do not feel that there was a love story since I never perceive the chemistry between the leads nor love or passion.

Back Cover: The Greek tycoon demands his bride! Savannah has returned to Greece with the intention of making her peace with the Kiriakis family. As for Leiandros, now he has Savannah right where he wants her. And in a short time he'll be giving her an ultimatum: if she doesn't want to lose everything she holds most dear, she'll agree to be his wife!

After 3 years of Dion's abuse Savannah leaves Greece and goes back to Georgia to be with her aunt. Three years later Dion dies in a car accident, one year after his death, his cousin Leiandros sends her a letter demanding the presence of her and the girls in Greece or no monthly allowance. Leiandros is the head of the Kiriakises, his pregnant wife Petra was riding with Dion when he crashed his car and was also killed-now Leiandros wants justice. Savannah owes him for all he has lost including the 7 years he's struggled with his forbidden desire for his cousin's scheming, heartless, hateful, dishonest widow. Author does an excellent job; you will not be able to put this one down. Great Harlequin Presents series thus far.

5 out of 5 stars Scorching hot romance combined with suspense, spirituality and intriguing science fiction.......2007-09-18

Hard at work on a critical experiment, being interrupted by a man is the last thing Endekian scientist, Dr. Alara Callandar, needed at the moment. Alara had been hailed as a war hero simply for surviving at terrorist attack at the hands of the Terrans. It was for that reason alone that she'd been allowed to continue with her controversial project. Now that her world had achieved peace though, her work was becoming vastly unpopular. Time was of the essence.

Unlike other humanoid women in the Federation, Endekian women were slaves to their biology. Once a female reached childbearing age they would enter a critical stage called Boktai every other year. During Boktai a women must engage in regular sex in order to regenerate their cells. It didn't matter if they were in a relationship or not, if they did not do so they would die. To make matters worse, when the need became too strong any male would do and if a female mated with the same male too often she would adapt to his essence and their lives would be inextricably intertwined. If the male refused her or died, she too would die. Alara had lost her beloved mother when her father had died during the Terran attack on her village.

Space Captain Xander is a Rystani warrior who had suffered torture at the hands of Endekian soldiers as a child when they'd conquered his home planet (THE CHALLENGE). Taking an Endekian woman as one of his crew was unpalatable but the Terran's predicament left him with no choice. He is on a mission to travel to the rim of the galaxy in hopes of finding a Perceptive One, the legendary higher intelligence who had left behind the machines that manufactured the psi suits every Federation member wore from birth.

Federation mythology proposed that these beings had once seeded their galaxy with pure DNA to create the diverse life forms in existence today and had placed Sentinels on the Rim to protect their galaxy from attack by the evil Zin. Then they'd simply disappeared. The Terrans (earth dwellers) were now dying in droves from a mysterious incurable virus which was rapidly spreading throughout the universe. By finding the Perceptive Ones Xander is hoping to bring back a strand of pure DNA to affect a cure. Alara has a unique talent which Federation intelligence has indicated would be necessary for the success of his mission. She is able to read a life form's DNA by sight alone. It is a testament to Xander's courage that he is able to accede to this necessity. He would surely have died from the Endekian torture had it not be for the bravery of the 21st century Terran, Tessa Camen. He owed Tessa and her people a debt of honor.

Alara isn't about to agree to give up her life's work. She has no love for the Terrans who killed her family and besides, due to same biological issue she seeks to cure, no Endekian female has ever been allowed to leave the planet. Xander, who isn't about to leave behind his best hope for the mission's success, is forced to make an untenable deal with the Endekian leader, Drik. To free Alara from this edict Xander must leave behind a hostage, Kirian the beloved Rystani wonder child, now 18, whose unique abilities stemmed from the fact that he had been born in hyperspace. As Drik and the other males of Endeki enjoyed their dominance over their woman, Alara would not be missed.

Since Alara isn't amenable to Xander's proposition he kidnaps her only to discover what a good deal Drik had actually made. Alara is in the throws of Boktai and with no Endekian male aboard Xander's ship, she will surely die. Just being in Xander's presence has pushed Alara's hormones to the limit causing her to lose control of her psi. As Xander becomes aware of her predicament he proposes a new experiment, and what an experiment it is! Does Xander have the cure for what ails her? Or will she be forced to give him an ultimatum? Will they find the Perceptive Ones or will the experiment which is their very existence end in failure.

As the saga continues, these books become more and more impossible to put down! Xander and Alara's quest brings whole new elements to the existing plot, but I have the feeling that Kerian has only begun to tap his potential, because as the story concludes the "powers that be" appear to have more plans for him. Look for his story THE QUEST in July 2006! If you love a scorching hot romance combined with suspense, spirituality and intriguing science fiction run, don't walk, to the nearest bookstore and begin reading this fascinating futuristic series!

4 out of 5 stars Learning more about the world.......2007-08-11

Susan Kearney really knows how to build a world. Learning more about the different kinds of aliens and societies she can come up with is always intriguing. And this one is no exception. The only thing I didn't care for (and thus, why I took 1 star off), is the sections with Kirek (a super genius and the possible key to saving the future) as a sexual slave. Slavery is just hard to take, even for the sake of a story.

But otherwise, the story and the characters continue to feel fresh and interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Attempt to merge romance and SF doesn't quite work.......2006-05-03

Scientist Alara Calladar lives to research the unique problem women fromher planet, Endekia suffer. They die without sex. Worse, once they bond with a man, they cannot even get the revitalization they need from other men. Knowing this, Endekian men treat their women cruely. Still, hate it though she does, Alara is as subject to the forces of biology as any Endekian woman. And when sexy Rystani warriro Xander of Mystique walks into her lab, her hormones demand that she mate with him--or die.

With a deadly virus spreading through the galaxy, Xander knows there's little time to head off a tragedy beyond anything the universe has experienced. The virus attacks not only humanoid life, but every form of life--and it's spreading quickly. He hopes that Alara's unique skill, the ability to see DNA with her naked eyes, might be the extra he'll need in his hunt to find the "perceptive ones" who first seeded the galaxy with life and who seem to have vanished but who, if rumors can be believed, still live on one remote planet. Since the Endekians are responsible for his people losing their planet, an Endekian woman would be his last choice. Still, if sex is necessary to keep her alive, he's certainly willing to oblige.

For the perceptive ones, humanoid life is a form of game--but a game with high stakes indeed. Their enemies threaten to wipe out their great accomplishment, but the perceptive ones can only do so much--humanoids much achieve a higher level of evolution--and there is little that the perceptive ones can do.

Author Susan Kearney continues in her efforts to combine science fiction and romance for the Tor Romance line. Following on her previous novels in this series, THE ULTIMATUM explains more about why the galaxy is how it is, how alien life-forms are able to breed so easily, and why the apparently senseless war between Endekians and Rystanis took place.

THE ULTIMATUM certainly combines solid SF world-building as well as the traditional elements of a romance novel. But Kearney is not quite the writer to merge the two--at least not in this story. Following a clunky opening where the reader gets an information dump, Alara and Xander set off to explore the universe. Manipulation of events by the perceptive ones weakens these two as protagonists. Kearney does better when it comes to the sexual side of her story--with spankings and dominance games, as well as alien but not-too-alien names for body parts to intrigue readers.

Kearney fans are certain to enjoy THE ULTIMATUM. For those who are looking for the real integration of romance and SF, though, this story just doesn't quite fill the need.

2 out of 5 stars Fell for it again dammit!.......2006-04-05

Every time Kearney comes out with a new one I read the synopsis and it looks good. Unfortunately there are no laws against bad authors taking good ideas. If Kearney were a true book lover she would give her ideas to someone who could do them justice. I mean my god! Every single one of her books is disappointment after disappointment. You'd think that even if she couldn't manage to come through with the story she would at least put some spark into the romance. I swear she uses the same sex scene in every book. And its not even a good one! Spanking, and 'tavis's' and submission as if she's following a manual. She manages to remove any sexyness (not a word I know) from the sex scenes! How the hell did she get published? It's just wrong! I know the story looks good, but if you read them you will only be infuriated that an author like this got her hands on a plot with such potential.

1 out of 5 stars Bogged down by excessive emphasis on xes........2006-03-06

When two enemies need one another, diplomacy enters new realms. Alara is a brilliant scientist among the people of her world, but her species' women are cursed by the need to mate at certain intervals or suffer a painful death. She is less than thrilled when that time comes upon her and the one available man is Xander, a man whose allegiance is to her people's enemies and who has come to kidnap her so that her unique talent for being able to see DNA can be used to help find a way to cure a galaxy pandemic. He's only too willing to help out, and the two agree to exchange services for their mutual benefit. Their quest will be long, dangerous, and filled with surprises, and much copulation.

    * This story is bogged down by excessive emphasis on sex and a need to have the past books fresh in one's mind, despite claims that it stands alone. The highlight of the story are the italicized conversations between two semi omnipotent beings, rather like the Q, discussing the fate of the galaxy. *

2 out of 5 stars She Should Have Shot Him Instead of Marrying Him.......2004-05-05

Twenty-seven-year-old Danielle and her mother are facing bankruptcy. They are going to lose their posh Melbourne apartment and their boutique business. Danielle goes to the owner of the mall that houses their shop and the apartment they lived in, Rafe Valdez, to plead for an extension.

Rafe, however, has other ideas. It seems that his grandfather and father before him worked in the wine fields of Danielle's aristocratic ancestors and Rafe thinks it ironic that she should come seeking assistance from him. Oh, I forgot to mention, that Rafe is responsible for maneuvering Danielle into the position she's in.

And he will get her out of it, put her right back in society, let her stay in her ritzy home, let her mother keep the boutique and give her a million dollars to boot. All she has to do is marry him, bear him a son and live in him and give herself to him every night for seven years.

Of course she sells herself Rafe, proving once again that women are all harlots at heart. Oh why oh why do romance writers go down this horrid path. A real woman, even an Australian woman, when confronted with Rafe's proposition, would have gone out and found a gun, come back and shot the dirt bag between the eyes and we'd have a mystery-thriller instead of a romance. This is the kind of romance that none of the Harlequin Dreamers find appealing, but obviously there are some misguided woman out there who believe the only real man is a bully. This is sad. Only two stars.

4 out of 5 stars Bianchin is always good, but ..........2002-04-07

... this was not her best effort. I still rated it 4 stars, because even an off-par Bianchin is better than most, but I was diappointed in this outing. "The Wedding Ultimatim" bore a distinct resemblance to "The Marriage Arrangement" (July 2001) in some key plot points, and therefore lacked the spontaneity and originality I usually count on this author to deliver.

Danielle d'Alboa, scion of an old and aristocratic Spanish dynasty that now finds itself nearly bankrupt, makes a last-chance plea to Rafael Valdez, holder of their major debt, for mercy. Rafael, new money from a rough background, offers to solve Danielle's financial problems in exchange for an heir; his child will be a blue-blood. Set against the backdrop of Australian society, the plot is well-paced and sophistocated.

I count on every Bianchin I buy to be a keeper, and often re-read her books over and over. This one did not make that cut, but was entertaining. I certainly recommend it as the best of the Harlequin offerings for April 2002.

3 out of 5 stars Okay conclusion to trilogy.......2007-05-07

This book is preceded by The Seat Beside Me (forgettable) and A Steadfast Surrender (best of the three). If I hadn't read the first two I might not have picked it up.
If you want to know what's going on with Merry, Claire, Sim, Jered, and Bailey, then you will want to read it. I don't think it's as interesting as A Steadfast Surrender (I find it a bit annoying that Moser must introduce completely new characters with each book and then focus 50% of the book on them) but it is worlds better than The Seat Beside Me which I don't like at all. I find the new characters, Annie and Cal, not very likeable. We don't see enough of Claire, Merry, and Sim, but I did enjoy seeing more of Jered and even Bailey.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent military thriller.......2003-02-26

"Ultimatum" was R.J. Pineiro's second published techno-thriller. Unlike his more recent novels that deal with the computer/high tech industry, this novel is a military thriller that takes place soon after Desert Storm. Saddam Hussein has nuclear missiles and is readying them for deployment against neighboring countries and U.S. troops stationed in the area.

The central figure, Lt. Kevin Dalton, is a fighter pilot in-training who nearly is stripped of his ability to fly due to the direct disobedience of orders. However, the CG makes an exception and gives Dalton another chance. Dalton doesn't make the best of his second chance and is soon on the run from the Iraqis. He meets a Mossad agent named Khalela and soon they join forces to locate where Hussein is producing his weapons. What ensues is a non-stop, action-filled search that concludes with a resounding climax. The door is left open for a sequel and Pineiro took advantage of that with his next novel entitled "Retribution".

While a departure from the them of his later novels, "Ultimatum" is a highly entertaining read and most of the statements regarding military weaponry, planes, etc. seem fairly accurate. If you enjoy military thrillers with little fluff, I recommend giving "Ultimatum" a read. If you find this one enjoyable, read the sequel although it's more of a spy thriller than military thriller.

5 out of 5 stars The first book I've read by him and I LOVED IT!!!.......2001-02-21

WOW!!! Even though I am only in eigth grade, that's what came into my mind after I finished this book. It is a really great book and if you like war and action books, read this one. It also has a touch of romance in it between the two really MAIN characters, Leutenent Dalton and Kahlela. Touching too. Trust me. You'll like it. It's AWESOME!

5 out of 5 stars Excitement, Romance and Convictions.......2000-11-08

This is so far the Best book I have ever read! Far better than Chakespear, there is an excitement that pushed me not to stop reading it. You'll learn a lot about military Scramble situations this masterpiece makes you feel in the middle of the thing, the only problem some one may face reading the book is that the more you read the more you can't stop reading it and the thing is that when you approch the end you'll probably wish the story does not end. This book will make some one think about the real values of life, it can completely change your personality.

5 out of 5 stars An Exciting Book!.......2000-08-28

This book was a very good takeoff on the Gulf War. The dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hussein has secret nuclear weapons that have to be found. These nuclear missiles are aimed at Isreal,Iran, and American airplanes in Saudi Arabia. An American named Dalton and an Isreali named Kalela are given the task of locating these missiles. Of course a romance blossoms between the two. This book turns into an exciting story. This was my second book that I had read by Pineiro. The team of Dalton and Kalela finally locate the nuclear missiles and destroy them. They have a rough time doing so. Once again a good book from R.J. Pineiro. Be sure to read the sequel to this book,Retribution.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh, in-your-face adventure about our worst nightmare -.......1998-08-17

As Hussein's finger reaches for the Go button of 30 neuclear missles, a few intrepid Americans reach maximum overload trying to take them out. Our heros, while not helped by a couple of self-serving politico/military types, attempt to overcome truly horrible odds, with the help of courageous local characters. The dialog is superb. The plot twists will give you physical somatics.
