Book Description
Creating memorable photographs is a process that starts before you edit an image in Photoshop, before you capture the image, even before you pick up the camera. You must first approach the subject with the proper sense of perception, with the ability to visualize the finished print before you commit a scene to pixels, but still be flexible and spontaneous. Master Fine Art photographer Vincent Versace has spent his career learning and teaching the art of perception and how to translate it into stunning images. In Welcome to Oz, he delves into what it means to approach digital photography cinematically, to use your perception, your camera, and Photoshop to capture the movement of life in a still image.
- Adapt your workflow to the image so you always know how best to use your tools
- Turn a seemingly impossible photographic scenario into a successful image
- Practice âimage harvestingâ to combine the best parts of many captures to create an optimum final result
- Create black and white prints that have the look, feel and ârichnessâ of traditional silver prints without ever leaving the RGB color space

Adding drama and depth to images.......2007-10-11
Welcome to Oz by Vincent Versace
Subtitled "A Cinematic Approach to Digital Still Photography with Photoshop"
ISBN 0-7357-1400-2

Reviewed by Hal Work of the Eureka Photoshop Users Group
Finally, someone wrote a book about the process of vision in Photography using Photoshop. Versace shows how to add drama and depth to an image through subtle, though involved, means. The efforts are worth it.
While Versace introduces a number of compositional philosophies, this is not just a touchy-feely book. There are a number of carefully thought out exercises that demonstrate his points. Each takes hours and are well work the time. A CD is included with example files. The book is using Photoshop CS2. That will have no effect on the lessons being taught.
He shows how to direct the viewers eyes through an image. By using image maps, variable opacity masking, and creative render lighting for the most part , he accomplishes this.
The back cover of the book truthfully states:
- Adapt your workflow to the image so you always know how best to use your tools
- Turn a seemingly impossible photographic scenario into a successful image
- Practice "image harvesting" to combine the best parts of many captures to create an optimum final result
- Create black and white prints that have the look, feel, and "richness" of traditional silver prints without ever leaving the RGB color space
I am taking his lessons to heart. I've begun incorporating some of these philosophies into my own work. It is making for a much more interesting ride.
contemporary approach.......2007-10-09
I like this non text book style, contemporary and philosophical in thought. The book is filled with beautiful photoshoped images. Unfortunately there are quite a few image typeset problems the before and after images reversed and the colour cast removed image looks worse than the before image, this can be annoying until you realise they are publishing problems. This is very surprising and unfortunate for this high quality book.
The Grammar of Seeing Applied to Practical Photoshop.......2007-10-08
Vincent Versace has clearly articulated the principles by which our eye moves across an image (the "grammar of seeing") and applied them to the enhancement of images through Photoshop in a very detailed step-by-step guide. He spends an entire chapter on each of six images of different types (portrait, nature up close, figure study, etc.) showing how the careful management of light in an image can turn a good photograph into a great one. Follow his lessons, with the enclosed CD-ROM, and you will emerge with a deep grasp of Photoshop tools that you can use on any kind of images. Highly recommended.
Dust collector big time.........2007-09-24
A postprocessing photoshop book. But a bad one of its kind. The first example he uses is a portrait of an female actor he tries to make better in photoshop. It ends up with very very yellow skintones. Im surprised he didnt see it himself before publishing. He uses a lot of time, too much, explaining about selective focus done with gaussian blur and layermasks. Why not get a fast lens and save all that paintwork- it didnt take me to OZ!!
3rd Party Req. not mentioned.......2007-09-12
After much anticipation and excitement....This book requires third party plug-ins, to complete the lessons as described..only good for 15 days. Sorry to say I am disapointed because nowhere in the Descriptions, Editorial reviews etc... does it mention this oversight!!!. I'm feeling kinda deceived right about now!!..... made it to page 17.

Book Description
Now featuring the problem-solving CD-ROM, StressAlyzer, the Sixth Edition of this book continues its tradition as the leading text in Mechanics of Materials. With its hallmark clarity and accuracy, this text develops student understanding along with analytical and problem-solving skills. The main topics are the analysis and design of structural members subjected to tension, compression, torsion, bending, and more. The book includes more material than can be taught in a single course so instructors have the opportunity to select the topics they wish to cover.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive and Enlightening.......2007-04-09
This is a comprehensive, enlightening and reader-friendly textbook on mechanics of materials. This excellent book is full of worked examples, illustrations and equations to help students relate to the fundamental concepts in mechanics of materials. The book provides a great foundation in this subject for undergraduate engineers. The book is well organized and well written with clear and easy to follow explanations.
The book is especially useful for reference, as it explains the derivations and many forms of complex equations in a step-by-step and simple to understand format.
Overall, one of the best books on mechanics of materials particularly for those that need a gentle introduction to stress and strain analysis.
Excellent coverage of Mechanics of Materials.......2007-01-11
The coverage of the material is excellent. The discussions of the various techniques are rational and insightful. The author is a seasoned engineer/academician who really understands mechanics, and knows how to convey its flavor to the reader.
Timoshenko's classic "Strength of Materials" covers most topics that are relevant to an engineer; however it comes with a "bag of tricks" and is difficult to follow. Gere's book takes a step back by eliminating certain advanced topics, and methodically explains the principles and techniques of mechanics.
The Most Confusing Mechanics Book Around!.......2006-04-15
This book is awful. The writing style is terrible. I think the author needs to learn how to speak english. Here's a quote from the book:
"Having found the principal stresses and their directions for an element in plane stress, we now consider the determination of the maximum shear stresses and the planes on which they act."
Instead he SHOULD have written:
"We will now find the maximum shear stresses."
The whole book is like this. It is far too wordy. This book could be a lot smaller if the author didn't try to make everything so complicated.
Easy to Understand.......2005-09-16
This book is very well written, it is easy to follow and each of the examples are explained in good detail. I would say that overall this is one of the better text books that I have used in my academic career.
Great introductory text for strength of materials.......2004-05-12
I was surprised at how clear and thorough this book was. I read almost the entire book (left out just a number of sections), and if you're like me and need to know the proofs for the engineering models, then this is great. It explained derivations, equation limitations, and problem-solving methods in a very satisfying way - I can honestly say that, because of this book, I have a better appreciation for how engineering methods are developed. Assuming you've studied differential equations and statics, then this book will be just right for you.
All the problems have solutions in the back, which was very helpful. However, occasionally I ran into problems that I needed detailed solutions to, so you might need to see your professor about those. Also, I have a strong feeling that maybe 3-4 problems out of the ~100 that I did had wrong or oversimplified solutions- but I could be wrong, or I used different approximation methods. So not counting that tiny minority of aggravating problems, this book is both pleasantly informative and challenging, and it made me continue to like engineering, unlike some other books/classes I've used/taken.

In Dinner With a Perfect Stranger, David Gregory relates the story of two men sharing a meal. The point of interest is knowing that one man believes he is Jesus. What will the other man think by the time the evening is through? The conversation begins, as one could imagine, scratching the dry hard surface of skepticism and doubt, but gently and persistently goes deeper and deeper, spiraling in from that starting point until they are eventually talking about the true stuff of life; the career drifting off-track, the marriage experiencing its own kind of strain, the life being lived where the philosophical questions of youth have given way to simply coping with modern day-to-day living.
Gregory's book is a refreshing reminder of what evangelical Christianity is at its very best -- a faith enlivened by the personal relationship between the Creator and the created. In the end, evangelical Christians are focused on who Jesus Christ is, and more specifically, who He is to them. Doctrinal stances, theological conundrums, questions about literal or non-literal Biblical interpretation, these are all beside the point for the certain type of Christian whose central focus is the life and person of Jesus.
In the Narnia series, C.S. Lewis touched on some of the core questions of religion, from the Christian viewpoint (is there a hell? What is heaven like, really? How can other religions be wrong, and just one be right?) Taking his cue from Lewis, Gregory does the same, realizing that questions like these come alive when they're in the context of a story, and we can be the third party, watching with interest while they are put on the table and considered. In the end, Gregory's book succeeds because of his willingness to approach interesting, hard questions like these. He is always, undoubtedly, aiming for the heart, but he realizes that to win the heart one must never forget that the mind has to come along for the ride. --Ed Dobeas
Book Description
You are Invited to a Dinner with Jesus of Nazareth
The mysterious envelope arrives on Nick Cominsky’s desk amid a stack of credit card applications and business-related junk mail. Although his seventy-hour workweek has already eaten into his limited family time, Nick can’t pass up the opportunity to see what kind of plot his colleagues have hatched.
The normally confident, cynical Nick soon finds himself thrown off-balance, drawn into an intriguing conversation with a baffling man who appears to be more than comfortable discussing everything from world religions to the existence of heaven and hell. And this man who calls himself Jesus also seems to know a disturbing amount about Nick’s personal life.
…………..
"You’re bored, Nick. You were made for more than this. You’re worried about God stealing your fun, but you’ve got it backwards.… There’s no adventure like being joined to the Creator of the universe." He leaned back off the table. "And your first mission would be to let him guide you out of the mess you’re in at work."
………….
As the evening progresses, their conversation touches on life, God, meaning, pain, faith, and doubt–and it seems that having Dinner with a Perfect Stranger may change Nick’s life forever.
Customer Reviews:
A Perfect Book.......2007-09-17
I received this book as a gift and enjoyed it so much that I bought it to give to my daughter-in-law. What would it be like to have dinner with Jesus? This book answers that question in a way that includes humor and an inside look at witnessing as Jesus might do it if he invited an unbeliever struggling with life's problems to dinner. A thought-provoking book beautifully written.
A wonderful book.........2007-09-07
An excellent book. Perfect for the whole family to listen to. It is funny at times and then brings the right amount of drama at the right time. It makes you think things through and to a higher level.
kateinkalifornia.......2007-08-29
A quick read, I actually read it twice. I will keep it and lend it out, but I want it back. It's one for my permanent collection.
Reads like a religious brochure.......2007-08-24
My mom gave me this book to read as, one would guess, a last minute ditch effort to get me back into religion. Flipping through the book and seeing that it was only around 100 pages, and was printed in nice big "kid's book" letters, I figured, hey, what's a couple hours? I'm certainly willing to hear other viewpoints, and weigh them accordingly.
My first complaint is that if this is how religious people think that non-religious people think, feel, and act, then they are sorely mistaken. It's as if everyone that isn't Christian is empty, sad, and just sort of generally depressed. I guess using logic and consistency in your life makes you depressed? I guess not accepting whim-based rules about how to live life because "this book said so" and instead working rigorously to come up with a consistent set of morals and values makes you feel empty?
Anyways, the author attempts to make logical proofs, and in doing so, shows that he has no clue what a logical proof is. His undeniable, irrefutable proof that god exists is that an earlier part of the bible predicts a later part of the bible. Seriously. Nevermind that the later part of the bible was written a couple centuries after the fact, and by monks who were fully aware of the prophecies in Daniel, etc.
He also makes the claim that either Buddhism, or Hinduism, (i forget which, and i don't have the book in front of me) can't be true because it says that the universe is eternal. "How does that stack up against what your scientists have recently discovered?" alluding to the idea that we now *think* that the universe had a starting point. Regardless of the fact that we don't KNOW that it had a starting point, using science to dethrone one religion after another but not applying it to your own is a methodology only useful to those completely wrapped up in their own beliefs. One wishes the guy having dinner with Jesus would have responded with "well... that's funny... what does our science say about the idea of consciousness without matter? Or simultaneously being all-knowing and all-powerful? Or energy without any means to measure it? I guess that means your dad doesn't exist... which in turn means you don't exist, because you're one with your dad or whatever... so I guess I'm talking to myself... which would explain why the waiter has been looking at me strangely all night."
There was also a fantastic bit at the end about how if Jesus was in this guy's heart, he (Jesus) could love the guy's wife when he (the guy) couldn't anymore. Or something to that effect. I'd talk more about that, but I don't want to misquote it and have someone negate the whole review based on it, so I'll let it go.
I could go on for pages about the rediculous assumptions this book makes about how life should be lived, and the causes of evil in the world, etc. But I won't. Suffice it to say that this book is patently ridiculous, and actually rather offensive to truly free-thinking, open and honest people.
Then again, the author believes in a god that said "Thou Shall Not Kill" and then went on to murder millions and millions of people, as well as an entire planet's worth of animals that are completely amoral. So I guess anything goes, and he's as capable as anyone else to cherry-pick the parts that he does and doesn't support out of the bible.
Profoundly entertaining........2007-08-04
This little book is captivating. It answered many questions that often come up about who God is. It was so interesting I couldn't put it down. I found it profoundly entertaining and historically accurate.

Think and Grow Rich
Customer Reviews:
Best if used with a printed copy.......2007-08-23
If you have never read Think and Grow Rich before, I would suggest reading the print version first (or at least have a copy handy). Since you will more than likely want to re-read or refer back to certain passages (i.e., the exercises that you are asked to perform).
I've read it several times over the years and thought that the audio book would be a good way to turn my 40 minute commute to work into more productive time.
Unlike the abridged version, there are no anecdotes from Napoleon Hill interspersed throughout this audiobook. However, there is a great introduction by W. Clement Stone.
I would recommend getting this version along with the abridged version simply because I think it's fascinating to hear Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone speak about this philosophy in their own words.
A timeless classic.......2007-07-03
Think and grow rich is a must read for anyone with a dream. Hill describes in inspiring detail how a determined and thoughtful human can achieve virtually anything with the right attitude, plans and of course...thoughts. Dollar-for-dollar the best buy on the Internet.
Read the bible then read this!.......2007-06-08
What more can I say! If you need an attitude adjustment... here it is! Think about it! If you think you can... why cant you? This book deals with that from a near clinical point of view as well as a lamen joe point of view! Everyone on earth needs this book!
Content is great, cheap , crappy paperback copy.......2007-06-07
My comment is for the production of this paperback, not the content.
This is the poorest quality paperback I've ever seen or purchased. Large chunks of pages came loose from the glue binding almost immediately after opening the book the first time. I was on a trip and constantly had to deal with more pages coming loose and trying to fly around. Really poor quality repro.
Get This Version as it was Originally Intended to Be Published.......2007-06-04
This is one of my all-time favorite books which I re-read it at least once every other year. Ask anyone who has read this book and virtually everyone will tell you this is one of the best you will ever own. If you feel you need help succeeding in anything, then use this book as a coach. If you have the ambition, but need a plan - this book will help you. If you just need a pick me up, just read some of the stories intertwined - this book will help you.
This book is an all time great dealing with success and personal management. Dealing with practical methods for creating in oneself the ability to do whatever one puts their mind to. Starting with an idea (hence the name) one can expect to use this information to create a way to approach life that should produce positive results.
---**** THE BOTTOM LINE ****---
$ Get THIS version of the book (white background cover with green and yellow title)
$ This version is the way it was originally published. It is older, yes, but newer versions seem to lose some of the original "flavor" and "intent".
$ If you haven't noticed, there's no question about whether or not you SHOULD get this book; the only decision is which version.

Customer Reviews:
Good but lacking.......2007-07-24
The book gives you exactly what it promises but not too much more. It doesn't really go above and beyond and that is why it gets three stars. I will be using it for performance evaluation ideas on reviewing terms. Anything else and the book would not be up to it.
Starter book on performance reviews........2007-05-28
This book would not be terribly helpful to someone who's had some experience in writing performance reviews. It's very basic, but may be a good starting point for a new manager or supervisor.
Ready to use .......2006-09-18
This book gets right to what you need, phrases for the performance review. This isn't a book you read but a book you use. Grab this book from the shelf, look up the skill or ability, match the performance and choose the phrase that fits best. This approach is straight forward and to the point. A must have for all managers. Then add the documented measurements of that performance like the number of days missed, etc...
Perfect phrases.......2006-07-25
Excellent resource for dealing with difficult employees; perfect phrases to use in human relations situtuations.
Not-so-perfect-phrases.......2006-03-27
Although this book is helpful in writing reviews, the lanugage in the book is very primary, and not useful for management type positions. I was disappointed in the book.

This is Your Brain on Science.......2007-09-18
Enjoyed it once I got beyond some of the outdated references. I often wonder, with the incredible mass of information in this field, why people are not more deliberate about feeding their brain and deliberately brain washing themselves. I know I do not do what I can to feed my head. It is easier to sit in front of the tube or sit around soaking up the gas from underachieving buddies.

This priceless gift is the understanding of how to use the power of your subconscious mind. I remember the distinct honor and privilege of being invited to Dr. Murphy's home in Beverly Hills back in 1978 where he personally enlightened me even more. I can remember now how incredibly peaceful and "holy" his living room felt. Dr. Murphy has passed on to higher realms, but his wisdom and jewels of thought are still with us. Keep thinking good and good will follow. For your ways of thinking have more concrete power than you might ever have thought... This is a pretty good book about autosuggestion / power of thoughts / self-hypnosis, but you might also want to take a look at the author's other book called "Think Yourself to Health, Wealth & Happiness: The Best of Joseph Murphy's Cosmic Wisdom". -For personally, if I had to choose between these two books, I'd get the other one. It pretty much covers this book also.
My hardcover version of this book looks like a cheapo print. There are white edges around the black cover picture, like the picture wasn't big enough for the cover. And the spinal text is printed upside down - from bottom to top...
Judge for yourself.......2007-07-23
I got this from the net. It doesn't take a whole lot of intelligence to see how Joseph Murphy has taken words from the bible and completely twisted and perverted it's message. Murphy is like a wolf in sheep's clothing.
ONENESS WITH GOD
Rev. Joseph Murphy, Ph.D.
Excerpt from:
THIS IS IT: The Art of Metaphysical Demonstration
Church of Divine Science
Los Angeles, 3rd ed., 1948 Revised
"I AM the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside Me." (Isaiah 45:5). You, the reader, are the one and only being there is. When you say, "I AM," that means the sum-total of all the personalities in the world. All other conceptions are projections in space of the one being, yourself. In the Bible, which is a text book on psychology--metaphysics and man's moods and feelings--the "I AM" is constantly referred to as, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." (John 14:6). "I am the Resurrection and the Life." (John 11:25). "I am that I am." (Ex. 3:14). These and similar sayings shine forth in all their true brilliance when once we see that Jesus, the Christ, was not speaking of Himself personally, but of the principle of Being inherent in all mankind.
What Truth students fail to see is that there is only one man, for the same reason that there is only one God. God and man are one--"I am in the Father, and the Father in me." (John 14:11). You cannot divide One; infinity cannot be divided or multiplied. The seeming divisions are the illusions of separation. We must give recognition to that innermost Self which is pure Spirit, and which is not subject to any condition whatsoever. We feel that we are conditioned by time and space, but these conditions have no place in essential Being. The true recognition of the "I AM" is the acknowledgment of the Self within you. God, the Father, eternally subsisting in His own Being, sends forth all forms of His will. Likewise, all forms return to the formless One, according to an immutable law.
You, the one man, can comprehend the infinite Self within you by a limitless expansion of your conception of God. You thus return to the Universal Being as a son coming home to his father. The more we study the Bible the more we realize that, by the art of meditation--i.e., by going inward--we become greater in our knowledge and comprehension of the mysteries contained therein. The road inward is the road to greatness, the Royal Road of the Ancients, and for all men who desire to become united with the Supreme Cause, the root and substance of all.
YOU have always lived! "Before Abraham was, I AM." (John 8:58). "When all things cease to be I AM." You, man, wrote the Bible! You may have forgotten it, but if you meditate on its passages, the subjective self within you will reveal to your conscious mind what you meant, when YOU wrote it thousands of years ago.
Time is an illusion; God is the eternal NOW. Thousands of years are as an instant. Aeons are as a day. Therefore, shed now the belief in time and the idea that we have to come back again and again to this earth plane--one time as John, another visit as Mary--in order to gain more experience, to perfect ourselves and become as Jesus, the Christ.
The only loss, limitation, restriction or evil in the world is our belief in loss, our belief in limitation, our belief in restriction and our belief in evil or disease. This is known as "the son of perdition" or sense of loss spoken of in the Bible. "Come now, let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." (Isaiah 1:18). "And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more." (Hebrews 10:17). "For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee." (Ps. 86:5).
* * * * *
Yes, the things in this book might have worked, but I wonder how. This is a perfect example of what Paul spoke about the last days, of people "having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof". What Joseph Murphy says blatantly twists religion to come up with his message.
There is more to this mystery than your subconscious fixing things for you.

Book Description
Like Freakonomics, here is a book that combines counterintuitive thinking with stories from everyday life to provide a striking new view of how our world works. Ever since Einstein's study of Brownian Motion, scientists have understood that a little disorder actually makes systems more effective. But most people still shun disorder--or suffer guilt over the mess they can't avoid. No longer! With a spectacular array of anecdotes and case studies of the useful role mess can play, here is an antidote to the accepted wisdom that tight schedules, neatness, and consistency are the keys to success. Drawing on examples from business, parenting, cooking, the war on terrorism, retail, and even the meteoric career of Arnold Schwarzenegger, coauthors Abrahamson and Freedman demonstrate that moderately messy systems use resources more efficiently, yield better solutions, and are harder to break than neat ones. A Perfect Mess will help readers assess what the right amount of disorder is for a given system, and how to apply these ideas onto a large scale--government, society-- and on a small scale--in your attic, kitchen, or office. A Perfect Mess will forever change the way we think about those unruly heaps of paper on our desks.

Disorder at its best........2007-10-09
I love this book it has shown me that it is ok to be disorganized, to a point. I bought it with a passing interest and the more I read the more I was able to line up the themes in the chapters with aspects of my life, which was rewarding and sometime eye-opening. The concepts in this book could prove to be useful to all types of people, but I mostly found myself examining the many examples as they related to my own business.
Great book!
TOTAL UNADULTERATED GARBAGE.......2007-09-14
I've reviewed a lot of books on Amazon; this may be the single worst. As a former "clutterholic", I know how clutter can literally destroy your life. Believe me, there is NOTHING good about clutter, and being a contrarian for its own sake, or to hawk books, is doing a disservice to the readers who are sincerly looking for help. You don't tell a person with a serious eating disorder that he/she is alright the way he/she is, and you don't tell a person with a serious clutter problem that he/she is alright the way he/she is!
So you don't have to be a neatnik after all!.......2007-06-09
The inside flap of the book says, "Ever Since Einstein's study of Brownian motion" scientistshave understooed that a little disorder can actually make systems more effective. But most people still shun disorder-- or suffer guilt over the mess they an't avoid! No longer do you have to be a neatnik to be PERFECT...a little mess goes a long way to creativity. The biggest surprise is that the authors show that strategic planning for corporation is not as effective as being nimble and responding to change. There are 13 chapters -- note not 12 -- just a bit messy, right? And they range from "The Cost of Neatness" to "The Aesthetics of Mess" . Written by Eric Abrahamson, professor of management at Columbia Business School and David Freedman, contributing editor and the tech columnist for INC magazine this is a highly readable and informative book. BUT don't think it's going to let you off the hook for being a clutter bug. Cluttering is just one aspect of "mess" and 'neatness'. Alas no rules for managers abougt how much mess and what kind of mess to include. Seems every manager that uses some degree of mess seems to do it differently. So I can't summarize it all for you hear. Plus I don't know why you're reading this. Me -- because I tend to collect clutter in my office. And then I put it in boxes and have to sort it out. EEKS...but I almost NEVER lose anything....same when I had a real office in a corporate environment. Even though I'm in high tech, I tend to use low-tech systems that don't take up much time in my busy and ever-changing world of consulting. Plus, I don't have to pay extra for people who work for me to just keep things NEAT....although now and then I do bring in people to help sort out supply closets etc and then I'm able to keep them in order for 6 months or so. You'll find your own rhyme and reason in this book. Plus it finally gives you a retort when people say you're office is 'messy' -- so was Einstein's and Edison's and more.
Don't buy this book if you count your paperclips.......2007-06-02
Despite the title, this book doesn't advocate disorder, at least not in the dictionary sense of the word.
For example, a neat-freak's desk, and one used by someone like me were compared.
The neat-freak has an "orderly" desk, with all paper filed out of sight. To get at any paper, the neatnik must take time to access the filing system: generally a matter of walking to a filing cabinet, opening a drawer, and riffling through folders.
The other desk is covered with piles of papers and folders. More often than not, the 'disorganized' worker has the paper he or she needs at or near the top of a pile within arm's length.
The point is that having the sort of rigid, non-priority-oriented, organization that many workplaces use isn't as efficient as a sort of ad hoc organization based on use and needs.
Even if you don't embrace the book's approach to organization, reading it will be an anodyne to the alphabetized drumbeat of advice from the compulsive pencil-arrangers of this world.
a explanation for the disarray.......2007-05-27
The authors put ryme and reason to the sense of disarray. At first, I was skeptical of this book but as i read it and they presented examaples and their arguments, I found myself sold on what they were discussing. There is order to the world of self contained chaos.

Book Description
Ten thousand years ago, humans and fairies fought a great battle for the magical island of Ireland. When it became clear to the fairy families that they could never win, they decided to move their civilization underground and keep themselves hidden from the humans. All the fairy families agreed on this, except the eighth family, the demons. The demons planned to lift their small island out of time until they had regrouped and were ready to wage war on the humans once more. However, the time spell went wrong, and the island of Hybras was catapulted into Limbo, where it has remained for ten thousand years. Now the tainted time spell is deteriorating and demons are being sucked back into the present space and time. The fairy council is concerned about this and is monitoring any materializations. But when the spells deterioration accelerates, the materializations become unpredictable. Even the fairy scientists cannot figure out where the next demon will pop up. But someone can. Artemis Fowl, teenage criminal mastermind, has solved temporal equations that no normal human should be intelligent enough to understand. So when a confused and frightened demon pops up in a Sicilian theater, Artemis Fowl is there to meet him. Unfortunately, he is not the only one. A second, mysterious party has also solved the temporal equations, and has managed to abduct the demon before Artemis can secure him. Once again, Artemis will have to pair up with his old comrade, Captain Holly Short, to track down the missing demon and rescue him, before the time spell dissolves completely and the lost demon colony returns violently to Earth.
Customer Reviews:
Positively Brilliant.......2007-10-07
Out of the entire Artemis Fowl series, this is easily my third or second favorite!
Well, assuming you've read the title to my review and assuming you've acknowledged this first sentence, you must realize just how great I believe this series is.
For starters, the concept in itself is brilliant. The stories are centered around the main character Artemis Fowl, a young (once evil) genius slowly growing a concience (I greatly apologize to everyone for spelling that last word wrong.) His partner is the young boy's bodygaurd, Butler, and his only real friend at first. He soon discovers a fairy civilization living beneath the surface of the earth where he makes friends with Holly Short, the newly annionted member of sector eight, Mulch Diggums, dirt eater extaordinare, and Foaly, the genius with four legs and a serious case of paranioa. Toghether they team up in order to save an entire species from extinction while preventing war between the human world and theirs.
Eoin Colfer knows exactly what he is doing. The Lost Colony, although a little monotonous at first, quickly became a fast paced nail biting ride in which he flawlessly combines magic and science into one great story. In fact, I only have a few complaints. First, the beginning was a little boring. Second, the ending surprise (in which Artemis finds out he is a big brother) is unecissary and did not particularly arouse curiosity for the next book. Still, these are negligible compared to the wonderful writing Colfer has done. Great job, 4.8 stars.
Another enjoyable Artemis adventure.......2007-09-26
I found certain aspects somewhat predictable, but it's nice that Artemis has met another genius to contend with. Can't wait for the next one!
The Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer.......2007-09-10
As usual Eoin Colfer takes us into the world of the Elves with our No1 criminal Artemis Fowl. But is the young lady who appears in this book to be his nemesis or love interest. You wont find out till the end.
Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony.......2007-08-31
I enjoyed this book as much as the other books. I couldn't put the book down. I would recommend this book to anyone to read.
Keep them coming!.......2007-08-23
This last adventure was just as intriguing as the other ones, yet the climax really surprised me. I genuinely recommend this book, as well as the rest of the Artemis' series. To be honest, I started reading them a couple of years ago, to cover the space between Harry Potter's books. After the second one, I just got fascinated with the plot and the characters. Harry, you do have quite and adversary there!

Book Description
Updated to the 2003 International Building and Residential Codes, the fourth edition of Understanding Construction Drawings continues to highlight a range of real construction projects - from residential dwellings to commercial structures. This enhanced edition takes a detailed approach to reading construction drawings by providing thorough coverage that builds the foundation for a broad understanding of the entire construction process, - beginning with a simple duplex home that focuses readers on the fundamentals of views, lines, basic dimensioning, and symbols. Next, coverage of a multi-level single family home goes into more depth in orienting and cross-referencing drawings. The third section explores multifamily construction and is accompanied by more complex drawings for practice and more advanced interpretations. The final portion of the book introduces readers to elements of commercial construction, including structural steel, masonry, and reinforced concrete. A set of drawings accompanies each building so that readers can apply important skills and gain a "real-world" understanding of construction drawings.

Good delivery.......2007-07-14
The book came on time however there was a page of the plans missing. Other than that everything was good.
Understanding construction drawings.......2007-03-05
The book is very informative how ever i feel some of the questions could have been a little more precise in what they were asking. I needed the book for my construction management class when i was taking another class on materials and methods for construction so a lot of information overlapped which helped concrete it in.
Beware USED books - Drawings are NOT included! .......2007-01-13
The book itself is generally good quality and well-written. I'm learning about construction & drawings for the very first time, so some info was hard for me to really understand - not enough explanation and, oh yeah - the DRAWINGS that are referred to throughout the ENTIRE book - uh... are NOT included! I HOPE someone sees this comment so that perhaps an addendum to the book's description could really warn buyers what they're in for by trying to save money on the used book. Honestly, you really lose at least half the value by not being able to refer to the plans...so: BUYER BEWARE!
Text book study.......2005-10-16
This book is laid out like a text book course of study, which I like, however one important thing to note is that there is no answer key for the tests. The answer key is a seperate book and I have been unable to locate it. Fortunately I work for a General Contractor and have been able to have my co-workers check my answers for accuracy. But as far as being a good source for systematic learning, this book definitely is.

Book Description
Thompson, Strickland and Gamble's, CRAFTING AND EXECUTING STRATEGY, 15e presents the latest research findings from the literature and cutting-edge strategic practices of companies have been incorporated to keep step with both theory and practice. Scores of new examples have been added to complement the new and updated Illustration Capsules. More chapter-end exercises have been included. The result is a text treatment with more punch, greater clarity, and improved classroom effectiveness. But none of the changes have altered the fundamental character that has driven the text's success over the years. The chapter content continues to be solidly mainstream and balanced, mirroring both the best academic thinking and the pragmatism of real-world strategic management. This paperback version of the text does not contain any cases, but it does include 21 readings from noted business writers that support the concepts in the main text portion. Instructors who would like to create their own case packets to go with this book should go to www.mhhe.com/primis to make their selections.

Same contents as the hard cover edition but this version does not come with BSG online access code. If you will need to play the Business Strategy Game online, you will need to pay $35 extra for online access code.
Language is a bit simplistic, not the type you would expect in a business textbook.
Easy read.......2007-04-01
This book is fairly easy to read. Lots of good/useful case studies.
Exellent condition.......2007-03-23
Book was in great condition. Received exactly as described. Top class seller.
The authors should find a different editor........2007-02-05
This book contains a lot of valuable information on market strategy. The content of the book is very useful, but also very wordy and repetitive. That makes gleaning the book's "meat" a very frustrating task.
Fortunately, core concepts are listed in page margins to summarize main ideas. There are also diagrams illustrating these core concepts. These will help you to skip past the fluffy content.
I think this book shows real promise but is in serious need of copy editing.
Content of text is too repetitive.......2007-01-06
Book was required for an 8 week course. The way the text is written there is too much repetition and information for the course - some chapters are over 50 pages long (10-15 of those pages are used as examples and repetitive information). May be better suited to the standard semester class.
