4 out of 5 stars Perfect Bride,Good Book But Not Perfect.......2007-08-27

Devon St. James is a poor young woman trying to make a living in London without resorting to thievary or whoring....she disguises herself as a pregnant woman each evening hoping it will help her get home through the London slums without any mishaps. It works until one evening when she is accosted by a pair of gang members who take her wages and attempt to steal the only memento she has left of her mother and when they go to attack her person she stabs and kills one of them. In retaliation the other gang member stabs her in the back and leaves her for dead. Looking for his wayward brother who is frequenting a gaming hell in a bad part of London, the Marquess of Thurston, Sebastian Sterling, comes across the injured Devon and takes her home to tend her. Sebastian, Justin and Julia's mother left their family when they were children and Sebastian has vowed he will never allow scandal to touch his family again. Now he has a beautiful unwed street urchin in his home unchaperoned and worse, she has an expensive necklace on her that he suspects she has stolen. After a bad start, Devon and Sebastian start having feelings for one another. Devon believes Sebastian is the most handsome man in London and Sebastian vows Devon will not return to the conditions she was living in so he attempts to help educate her so that she can gain employment in a respectable household.

This was a sweet story with a couple of unexpected twists but sometimes Devon seemed a little too sweet and childish. Sometimes Sebastian is a contridiction as well. Good story, but not quite perfect.

3 out of 5 stars It was OK.......2006-05-08

I've been reading romance novels for years, good and bad. While this is definately NOT the worst, I still couldn't get the characters to pop out of the book. The characters felt hollow and it didn't leave the warm-fuzzy feeling I love as I finish a novel. I've read alot of positive remarks here and I believe that you should give this book a chance. You may have a whole different opinion as I do. And if the author's job was to "touch" people with the storyline, then she definately succeeded. :)

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to fall in love!.......2005-09-20

Delightful! Both characters felt "real" and made me believe they were in love with one another deeply. Both had great senses of humor too, which is always a plus. Samantha James is such a master at weaving a fairy tale and this book is just that. Sebastian and Devon are such dynamic characters in their own right that it's only a matter of time before the sparks fly. If you long to be swept into the lives of two enchanting people, I highly recommend this one. This book had everything you need to create a good romance: a dashing hero, a beautiful heroine, a person who always seems to interfere with the hero and heroine, and, most of all...PASSION! Samantha James has the ability to break down her characters souls and feed their emotional struggles onto the pages. Samantha James has found a perfect match for the dashing Sebastian with feisty Devon. They are well matched in temperament, intelligence and in their loyalty to their families. It was an interesting. There is enough conflict to make the story line interesting and not so much that your left wondering why they ever got together. The reader will feel the despair, the heartbreak, passion and the joy of Sebastian and Devon in this very excellent character driven romance. A Perfect Bride is a very easy reads. I read this book in half a day and enjoyed it to the end. I love this series.

I really don't agree with the reviewer who says she thought Devon's dismissal of his marriage proposal extreme and unlikely. I think it was realistic. Devon didn't trust Sebastian at that point and she had her grandmother to be able to take care of her. Sebastian needed to prove he love her no matter what. Devon felt used by Sebastian. I likes seeing Sebastian romance Devon.

I'm reading this book for the 3rd time and I still love it.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Romance.......2005-07-22

I started this book several months ago, but put it down after the first 50 pages. Recently, I came across it on my TBR shelf and decided to give it another go and boy am I glad I did.

A Perfect Bride has been summarized already so I will add my two pennies instead.

I loved the well-written chemistry and sexual tension. My stomach was in knots through the whole novel. These two people were star-crossed lovers that belonged together. How can they overcome the complications of coming from different stations in society?
My favorite part:
*SPOILER ALERT*
When the hero had to find the heroine a husband, his jealousy and agony over his decision was palpable.

I have read the other two in the trilogy: A Perfect Husband and A Perfect Hero, and this one is by far the best.

3 out of 5 stars good read but..........2005-06-29

Actually, I liked this book. I found it to be an easy read. Our lass in jeopardy, Devon St. James, of course beautiful, gets into a sticky situation while living and working St. Giles and ends up in the guttter with a knife wound. Lord Sebastian Sterling, Marquess of Thurston, rescues her but is unsure if she is as innocent as she says she is. Will she clear his home out of its silver? The developing relationship between them is very nice. So why only 3 stars you ask? A few reasons. I think a book should rate 5 stars when it is indeed perfect and this has flaws in my opinion. One, how did she speak? Her dead Mother was a governess but they did live in St. Giles so she clearly would be a tad rough around the edges, would you not think? Yet the story only acknowledges that she does not read and all the dialogue has her speaking very well. How is this possible? How did a bar maid learn deportment? The story describes her as walking in head high, back straight like any blue blooded young lady. Really? Seems more than far fetched. Also, the tense relationship between Sebastian and his rake brother, Justin, seems forced. Justin acknowledges what a hero his brother is, what great care Sebastian took of him and his sister when they were young yet Justin seems to mock him. Why? I am guessing that reason is in the next book, The Perfect Groom. Also, any way you slice it, Devon is a bastard so it would have been better if more time had been spent on what happens after they marry. As a married couple, did they attend Ton function? Were they invited? Also, I thought Devon's dismissal of his marriage proposal extreme and unlikely.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-10-03

As a calligrapher in the wedding business I was looking for books to recommend to brides from my website. I found this book to be a little gem of information. It won't write your thank you's for you but it will guide you through the do's and don'ts using basic common sense. It has a helpful thesaurus and several sample notes to help you get past the writers block you will inevitably get when you sit down for this daunting task.

2 out of 5 stars Ummmm....are you serious.......2007-04-26

This isn't the first time I've fallen for the mental game of "well, two people on Amazon loved it - it must be great" when purchasing an item. This book certainly falls into this category for me.

I read the book cover to cover in about two hours (nice feature), but only received two or three helpful "etiquette" pointers. Other than that, I feel you're buying a book of basic common sense when it comes to writing a thank you.

Thus said, I've always been a decent writer, so....this book is probably more helpful for people that have a hard time finding what to say and how to say it. I, personally, do not have many reservations in this area.

So, in short, this book was not useful to me, but, not to be completely negative, it might be a good inspiration for those that feel writing a thank you is an extremely daunting task - that's just not me. º

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-01-10

This book was a wonderful tool I used when writing thank you notes after my wedding.I got many compliments on how well written they were from many of our guests. It has helped me write thank you notes since my wedding for many other occasions. I think it is important to write a "heartfelt" thank you note to someone who took the time to purchase a gift or give you their time. In fact, now I get irritated when I get a thank you note with 2 sentences!

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't have written them all without this book!!.......2002-02-15

This book is fantastic! It helped me slog through the 179 thank you notes I had to write after my wedding. There were lots of great ideas of what to say and how to say it, and beleive me, after about the 25th thank you note, I needed all the help I could get. There is good solid, practical advice as to how to manage the thank you note writing task as well as inspirational advice to help you stay properly focused and, well, thankful. All in all, it was indespensable!

Book Description

The relationship between a mother and daughter is often fraught-but never so much as during the preparations for a daughter's wedding. Who better to offer a fresh perspective on weddings than the mother of the bride? And who better to describe it -- the agony and the ecstasy -- than Ilene "Gingy" Beckerman, who's married off three daughters and remembers it all very clearly.

--The high cost of wedding cakes: "I could have had a lifetime supply of Entenmann's chocolate doughnuts!"

--Bridesmaid dresses: "What do five girls-one short, one tall, one buxom, one flat, one who gave birth a month ago-have in common? A bridesmaid's dress they hate."

--Mother-of-the-bride dresses: "I tried on green velvet. A Rodney Dangerfield line came to me: 'If that dress had pockets, you'd look like a pool table.' The dress had pockets."

--And, finally, the sight of her daughter walking down the aisle: "My daughter was Cinderella, Snow White, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Jacqueline Kennedy. But better."

Gingy looks at the bride-to-be and sees the teenager who wanted Bo Derek braids, the little girl she taught to dance to the tune of "Me and My Shadow," the beautiful baby, the miracle she gave birth to decades earlier. And now, en route to the aisle, their relationship is tested in ways Gingy never imagined.

Beckerman simply and brilliantly describes the highs and lows of life with an adult daughter. What emerges is a poignant and telling story.

4 out of 5 stars humor for mother of the bride.......2007-07-23

I got this book for my mom. The title caught my eye because she had a horrible time finding a dress for my brother's wedding and now she has to look once again for my wedding! She loved it and found it very humorous, basically read it in one night. The only thing I wished is that it would have had a checklist or something like that for the mother of the bride. Overall, great book!

5 out of 5 stars Mother of the Bride: The Dream, the Reality, the Search for a Perfect Dress.......2007-07-05

What a great book to give the 1st time mother of the bride at the bridal shower. It puts things in perspective! I recommend they read it a couple of days before the wedding.

5 out of 5 stars Survival guide for M.O.B!!.......2005-05-20

This book was great. It is written with humor and insight, and I probably would not have appreciated it before this adventure we call "being the M.O.B". It is definately worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars You'll laugh, you'll cry -- you know the drill =).......2003-06-18

This is basically an autobiographical comic short story, with wacky illustrations to add to the fun. I bought it as a Mother's Day present for my mom right after I got engaged, and we read it aloud together in our favorite spot on the front porch, passing the book when one of us was overcome with laughter -- or tears. Ilene Beckerman can really write, and she does it with devastating humor and tear-jerking poignancy as she explores -- from the front row view of the mother of the bride -- the fun, the fights, the work, the tears, the trials, and often the complete insanity that all contribute to the creation of a beautiful wedding. At the same time, she critically (and beautifully) examines the complex relationship between a mother and her daughter. This short little gem will help you remember the things you appreciate most about your mother, your daughter...or both.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Gift.......2000-10-12

When my daughter became engaged, I got three copies of this book as gifts. I loved it so much that I have given away the two extra copies that I received to friends who will soon be MOBs!

The book is so real, so funny, so poignant. It succinctly summed up the relationship between mothers and daughters as it detailed the intricate and involved planning process for today's weddings. I loved the way Beckerman gave us glimpses of her daughter's growing-up years.

I felt every feeling the author was feeling --- I laughed, I cried, and I called my daughter to read portions to her.

And today....I found the perfect dress!!!

Book Description

A childhood trauma has left Lady Blanche Harrington incapable of all emotion, least of all love. Now circumstance demands she marry, and Blanche dreads choosing from her horde of fawning suitors. For one very eligible gentleman has not stepped forward.…

A war hero and a recluse, Rex de Warenne has long admired Lady Blanche. Though fate and his own dark nature have robbed him of any hope for the kind of future such a lady deserves, Rex is determined to aid her—and keep his feelings to himself. But when their growing friendship leads to a night of shocking passion, Blanche's newfound memories threaten their fragile love…and Blanche's very life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-10-01

I was waiting a long time for Rex's story. He seemed so mysterious and interesting because of his whole war experience and losing a leg but Brenda Joyce made his book boring. With the exception of a couple of scenes. Both characters were very interesting but the whole story came out blah! Very simple. I love Brenda Joyce books but this book left me wanting something better. It's just sad Rex didn't have a better story. I guess if you weren't waiting a long time for this book or this is your first Brenda Joyce book it would seem much better. Try her other books, I would suggest Promise of the Rose, The Masquerade, The Fires of Paradise, or The Prize. These are my top favorites.

2 out of 5 stars NOT MUCH OF A ROMANCE!!!!!!!.......2007-09-26

The DeWarenne Dynasty books, as far as I am concerned, left a lot to be desired.
The characters, in The Perfect Bride, seemed to be so miserable all of the time that you really couldn't understand how two grown adults could be so boring. Blanche is afraid of EVERYTHING and Rex is so involved with just himself that you get nothing out of their characters.
Needless to say, I will not be reading any of Brenda Joyce's books in the future.

3 out of 5 stars not what i thought.........2007-09-10

this was my first joyce romance and i was a little dissapointed. the beginning was very promising, but the pacing was a little slow. i do understand that historical/regency romances are written in this way, but half way through i found myself skimming the pages and sad to say this but skipping some pages

**spoilers**
i could not get past blanches need to dissappear from rex's life to protect him.. i understand that she had gone through extreme trauma emotionally, but i guess i just couldn't read the book at that point bc they had just realized that they are meant to be together and i wanted their relationship to develop more rather then have another separation.

i can say that i did enjoy most of the book.. i think rex is a wonderful yummy hero, to be cared for in that way (i think most all women dream of).. and blanche a sweet and loving herione.. but unfortunately i did have to skip a couple of chapters that i didn't need to read to get the full story.

i may try another joyce, but i won't pay full price for it..

4 out of 5 stars Finally! She's back! .......2007-09-10

I intentionally did not read any reviews prior to reading this book, so that I could go in with an open mind. I was extremely disappointed in Ms. Joyce's Master of Time book, so I was looking foward to reading the next book in the DeWarrene dynasty. It was worth the wait!
(Minor spoiler alert!)
This book is full of emotion, as we got a glimpse of the isolation and lonliness these two characters were feeling before they came together. We got a true sense of Blanche's deperate attempt to take control of her life after experiencing haunting and troubling memories and Rex's pain of knowing he had a son he'd never met, nor seen.
I was not a fan of Stolen Bride, but I am completely on board for The Perfect Bride. I stayed up late two nights in a row to finish this book because I could not put it down. It was a genuine love story of two very lonely people finding one another against all odds. It's been so very long since I have read a decent romance novel and this one made it worth the wait.
I guess I don't understand the negative reviews for this book, but I understand everyone has their own taste. The only things that kept me from giving this book five stars were:
1. Why does Blanche always call Rex "Sir Rex?" Even after they were married, even while making love? Strange.
2. There was some interesting foreshadowing of a character named James Montrose in the book. He was one of Blanche's prospective suitors near the end and I was anxious to see where his character development would lead, but it never went anywhere, like he was just forgotten.
Other than that, I adored this book. So glad Brenda is back!

5 out of 5 stars Characters that you really care about.......2007-09-07

I'm surprised to see some of the bad reviews of this book, but I guess you can just chalk it up to different people having different tastes. I LOVED this book. This is the third book I've read from Joyce's de Warenne family series (having read Cliff's story and Devlin's story), and it is by far my favorite. I have to disagree with the other reviews that claimed that this book was passionless. It might not be the soft porn that some romance novels are, with torid and graphic sex scenes in every chapter, but there is a definite sexual tension between the main characters from practically the very beginning, which leads to actual sexual encounters (tender, but full of passion) in the last third of the book. This book delves deeply into the emotions of both characters, which is why I cared so much for them. That's the type of romance I'm looking for when reading a novel, not a book full of nothing but "pounding flesh and quivering thighs." Not everybody will agree with me on that, however, which is why I say it is a matter of personal taste.

It is truly a book for both brides and wedding photographers. Its step-by-step helpfulness and personal commentary has you feeling like you're actually having a personal dialogue with two people who know their subject thoroughly. It is beautifully edited and written, the pictures are incredible and both Mia and Galina treat the reader with a much appreciated honesty and respect, something that seems to be missing in most 'how to' books of this day and age. Both Galina and Mia stress the importance of teamwork, trust and a best laid out plan for both wedding photographer and bride and they couldn't have made the subject of wedding photography any simpler to understand. Brides should never see a wedding photographer without reading this book first. It should be required reading for every bride-to-be. A truly magnificent and entertaining read!

5 out of 5 stars Your Perfect Wedding Planner.......2005-03-01

At $17 (new) it will probably be the most inexpensive purchase you will make for your wedding, but probably the most useful. "Brides Wedding Planner- The Perfect Guide To The Perfect Wedding" by the editors of Bride's magazine is just that, perfect. It's a must have for any bride-to-be. Being the first of my friends to get married, I had no idea where to start. When I discovered this book, it was as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. This book starts at the very beginning, your engagement, and guides you all the way through the wedding planning process. This book doesn't leave you stranded after the wedding either. "Brides Wedding Planner" even helps you write thank-you notes and furnish your new home. This book helps to answer any questions you may have and any questions you hadn't thought of yet. This planner tells you how to choose your church, photographer, DJ or Band, reception hall and when to book each of them. This book even includes sample contracts to help you know what your getting yourself into. "Bride's Wedding Planner" even has worksheets to help you make sure you are planning the perfect wedding for you. Are you having an interfaith wedding? There's a guide on that. Want to write your own vows? There's a guide to that too. If you have any questions this book will answer them. It's the perfect accessory for any bride-to-be.

...and plan your own wedding.

It took me ages and ages to find a book which catered to my needs. Basically, I wanted a wedding which was not too formal, and not too expensive. I have found the Bride's Wedding Planner to be just so useful in the planning of my wedding! It has given me loads of hints on how to do things cheaply - it's full of great ideas to ensure that your day runs smoothly.

My fiance and I made good use of the section on writing our vows to each other - this planner has been a godsend for us! We refer to it for everything. It is not something I would want to carry around with me to use, but as a guide - for reference purposes only, it is perfect. In the back of the folder, there is a pocket that would fit about A5 size paper inside - but only about 10 sheets, it's not that big.

Within the planner there are loads of forms and checklists which make it so much easier to remember everything that is involved.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2000-10-14

After reading the other review I was expecting this to be a great planner. However, there were no pockets to put contracts in; the binding came loose after using it a few times; it was difficult to photocopy anything; and it was not very functional. There are better planners out there!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Everything you need in one book!.......1999-12-20

I can't believe how informative this book is. It tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about planning your wedding. It has forms for you to fill out everything pertaining to the big day...jot down who is going to be in the bridal party, what food do you want to serve, etc. It tells you how to get a caterer, florist, photographer, etc, and tells you all the questions you need to ask them beforehand to make sure you're getting the best value for your money. It also explains how everything is done in Christian and Jewish ceremonies. There are so many things in here you would never even think of...how to set a budget once you are married, what forms of birth control to use, it explains all the different styles of gowns and veils, tells you what the mother of the groom and bride are supposed to do, who pays for what, and there is a calender for you and him for each month to tell you what needs to get done. If you thought of it, it's in here. They even give you suggestions of what song you could dance the first dance to, how to preserve your dress, and more. This is a REALLY great deal on a wedding planner.
