sweet and emotional.......2007-08-29
I usually like books with lots of dialogs and action instead of narrative reflection but the author writes about the characters' emotions and thoughts so poignantly and beautifully that it was enough to carry the book. It wasn't boring in the least as I would usually find books with too much description. It was very sweet.
A story with potential.......2007-07-31
After the Kiss by Karen Ranney was a somewhat enjoyable read. Ranney proves to be an imaginative and creative writer with the story's unique plot and characters. Despite the favorable storyline, I felt that the characters themselves were a little lacking, and I did not grow to love them as I do in other books. The characters are unique because of their backgrounds and occupations, but neither possessed a strong personality. As a reader, I felt that I was only introduced to the mere outline of the character and felt it hard to really connect or love any of them.
Michael Hawthorne, the Earl of Montraine, is a master of codes and works for the government. He believes in order in his life and does not tend to indulge in excess. The other members of his family are almost opposites of him, selfish and extravagant; Ranney does a good job at making the other family members disliked--intentionally. Margaret Esterly is a poor widow of a bookseller and has come into London to sell a mysterious and erotic book. The two meet by chance and neither are able to forget one another. To Michael Hawthorne, Margaret is the only code or puzzle that he has not been able to solve, and he is desperate to understand the mesmerizing hold she has over him. Thus begins his pursuit, all the while it is revealed that the books Margaret holds could put their lives in danger.
The book has a lot of potential and was not an unpleasant read. I admit, I was worried that Ranney had forgotten the larger part of the story with the mysterious books, but I am happy to say that she weaves the ends together quite nicely. Once again, the story holds a lot of potential, but something was just lacking. I can't understand why I didn't come to love the characters, although Michael did grow on me by the end of the book. Regardless of the author's attempts at adding depth to the characters, I found them to be simple and perhaps a little bland, although why I'm not quite sure. The protagonists have all the right components to be adored, but they just did not fit together well enough for me--and I've never thought of myself hard to please when it came to romance novels.
Ranney shows skill at story telling. The story was well composed, but I find that her writing can definitely use some work and the book may have been a little boring at times. She is a good writer, there is no doubt of that, but unfortunately, the words did not seem to flow together and were a little awkward to read. I'm not sure if it was my own possible ignorance (which wouldn't be hard to believe although I found the book to be a generally easy read), or the fact that there were way too many typos in the book. Unfortunately, although it may be the fact that I simply cannot understand all of her writing, that does prove to be a problem for the writer. A writer's work should flow and be easy to read, not uncomfortable as this book was at times.
All in all, the book was a fast and not terrible read, but the writing needs to be polished, and the characters need to develop a little more personality. Whether or not the character's lack was due to the writing, I'm not sure. The author shows talent, and potential; I wouldn't mind reading another book by Ranney. I have confidence that she can do better.
A REAL Five Star Book.......2007-04-22
It's very rare that I give out five stars to a book, but this one definitely made it to the five star pile for me. It was that good.
I've heard many times before that romance novels are boring because they are predictable. Let's face it: there's nothing new under the sun. But for me, it's not really the plot devices that make the story...it's how the plot devices are used. In other words it's not necessarily the journey, but how you make the journey, that makes it interesting. Yeah, I've read dozens of books with this same basic plot before. BUT...I haven't read it as it happens to THESE characters. How will THESE characters react? How will THEY solve the problems? How will THEY fall in love? Give me a book that makes me interested in those questions, and I'm sold.
From the very beginning, I cared about these characters. My heart went out to Margaret, a poor widow, from the very first paragraphs of the Prologue. I felt a bit of kinship with her in chapter one when she's guiltily indulging in her one great passion: reading. And she's doing it by reading an erotic book, fantasizing about one of the "models". How many of us have done the same with an erotic book and it's cover model? Margaret is a kindred spirit in a way, and I wanted her to find the man who would bring to her all the carnal delights she's read about in "The Journals of Agustin X".
And sure enough, just as we thought she would, she finds him in the form of Michael, an Earl who is quickly losing money, and needs a rich wife to inject some capital into his bank account. Again, it's not a new plot point, but after reading so many books where the hero is wealthy beyond belief, to read one where he's not was refreshing.
You see where the conflict is right away: Michael can't marry a poor widow, and Margaret's personality just can't allow her to be someone's mistress. I won't describe the plot any farther than that, because it's not really necessary. You know how it might unfold, but how will it unfold for these characters? This book compels you to keep turning the pages to find out.
My final point about this book is the one reason that I think I loved it so much: It was one of the most erotic books I've read in a long time. And the best part about that was that it's erotic without being crude. Nowadays, some authors feel that being more and more crude is the only way to keep their readers interested. They could take lessons from Ranney, because, she packed more eroticism into the moments before Michael and Margaret kissed than many authors put into an entire love scene. That, my friends, is good writing, and that is why, for me, this book deserves five stars.
Unique and Refreshing.......2006-12-02
I have a weakness for the historical romances. The usual formula is a wealthy nobleman who has no intention of marrying falls in love and changes into the perfect man or they marry for money and fall in love...In this book the hero is looking for a wife, preferably an heiress because he inherited three estates that are in poor condition and earning no money. He also has a mother and three sisters who spend money to outdo their rivals even though they know their son/brother will have to sacrifice himself to support them. Michael, an earl, is a code master and enjoys working for the government. He is not a womanizer, is an intellectual and frightens most people away with his usual glum expression. He does not plan to marry for love, his father committed suicide when the mistress he was in love with left him for another man. Michael does not go for the giggling misses and is never enamored by one woman until he bumps into a mysterious woman at a friend's masquerade ball. The woman is a natural beauty and is dressed as a simple country maid. She is smart and quiet and utterly fascinating to him, he thinks she is going to kiss him but then she turns and runs away. Michael is shocked to find he cannot forget this woman and sets out on a quest to find her, he is convinced if he can just see her or kiss her one time he can get her out of his mind and continue his search for a wife.
Margaret is the widow of a tradesman who was killed in a fire and left her penniless. Her husband was the bastard son of a nobleman who had some financial assistance from his brother, but the brother refuses to help Margaret out after his death. It is revealed the brother had Margaret's husband killed because he had possession of some journals that will give him away for treason. Margaret moves to the country with her maid/friend and the only possession she had left from her husband was a set of three erotic journels. The journels gives details and pictures of erotic actions that Margaret is fascinated with but has never experienced. She finds a list of possible buyers for the journels tucked away and decides she will sell one to support herself. She goes to a masquerade party to sell one and ends up meeting an intriguing and beautiful man who makes her want to throw away all propriety for a few moments of pleasure. However, she ends up running away. When this man, an earl (Michael) tracks her down, he asks for a kiss. He swears he will let her go after the kiss, but to keep her with him he delays kissing her. One thing leads to another and Michael offers her the post as a mistress, he cannot marry her because he has to marry an heiress. Margaret knows she will only ever love Michael, but she refuses to be second best. In the meantime, her ex brother in law is plotting to gain the journals and do away with anyone who can connect him to them.
This romance has more depth than most romances. It is almost painful to read sometimes because both characters are so unselfish that they are willing to sacrifice their happiness for others. I just adored these two and they are two of the best characters in any romance I've read. The sex borders on erotic but is tastefully done. I just can't find faults with this one.
Boring.......2006-07-29
Did I read the wrong book. Other reviewers called this book, Sensual, Erotic and a great love story. No No No - It was Boring I tell you. Mrs. Ranney what were you thinking. I could'nt wait for it to be over. The characters had no chemistry, no cute sparring back and forth no witty comebacks, no passion. The only scene they had was the ribbon scene, and that left me a little confused. In the books I read I like Passion, Good Sex but not always and above all a great love story. She just fell flat on all accounts.

Book Description
THE INNOCENT
Too tall and entirely too outspoken, Miss Eliza Sheringham grew up thumbing her nose at polite English society. So when Captain Lord Marcus Wharton, called Beau for his stunning good looks set his rakish sights on her, Eliza thought nothing of rejecting his advances. Until a stolen kiss swept her into the arms of a man too dangerous too love. . . .
THE BEAU
Called to battle, Marcus left behind the woman who had captured his heart--and the scandal ignited by their kiss. His brother's disappearance made him Duke of Blackthorne, guardian of twin nieces who were rumored to be his own daughters. Badly scared in battle, the Beau had become the Beast of Blackthorne, a wounded animal destined to spend his life hiding in a shadowy wing of Blackthorne Abbey.
THE BEAST
When Eliza Sheringham showed up on his doorstep proposing herself as governess for the incorrigible twins, the Beast demanded marriage as the price of the job. He knew she could never love him. Surely his looks would drive her away--now that he hungered for her more than life itself....
Customer Reviews:
Who wrote the second part of the book?.......2006-04-16
This book was sectioned off into two parts. When you first meet Marcus, the hero, he's sweet and charming. Eliza, the heroine, is smart and independent. This story had potential.
Enter the second part of the book..the Beast of Blackthorne. Marcus is a true beast in every way and Eliza is suddenly blindly dedicated to him, despite his ravings and rapings...
I truly enjoyed the first part of this book and am disappointed it turned out to be so bad.
Poor; could have been so much better!.......2004-10-17
As WMR-UK says in her review "waste of a great premise!" Besides the inaccuracies as stated in other reviews, there are unsolved mysteries here - the whole book seemed geared to fill us in so Johnston could lead to other books! No one even mentioned that "Beau" (Marcus) rapes Eliza twice - what kind of a hero is that? (Oh, I forgot we are calling that "forced seduction" now!) I was so thoroughly disappointed! It is rare that I am so repulsed by a book - but I was.
Not all that bad if you forget the details.......2002-03-03
The story, once you get over the errors and the inaccuracies, is not all that bad. I found the relationship between Julian and Eliza touching and their friendship very real and down to earth. The first part of the book is quite enchanting.
The relationship between Eliza and Marcus is odd to say the least. Why would a person who is so badly scarred emotionally and physically force a woman to marry him? Why resist her so much if he wants her that badly? Why does she agree to it all? What is the secret she is hiding?
There are many things wrong with this book, but it does compel you to finish it! Despite the inaccuracies that will frustrate and irritate you... You still find yourself turning page after page, so... there must be something in it to merit a good rating!!
So-so; waste of a great premise!.......2001-12-21
I was going to write a lengthy review explaining all the ways in which this book, in its plot and execution, fell short of my expectations and desires, but I see that the reader from Bethesda who wrote the review of 16 March has done all that, very well indeed. Great review, and very accurate in its detailing of this book's shortcomings!
There are other grating inaccuracies and impossibilities which also irritated me: for instance, Marcus travelling with his twin nieces without a maid or governess in sight?! No way. Absolutely would that not have happened. These are daughters of a duke. They would be protected and chaperoned at every turn. Marcus may have been a relative, but he was still a man; he would not have been alone with them.
And then later in the book, Marcus sends someone to ride from Kent to London, to see his solicitor and a vicar and arrange for a special licence and dispensation to be married after dark, then visit Eliza's friends and get them to Kent for the wedding. All in the same 24-hour period! No chance; that's a complete impossibility. Sure, a rider on a speedy horse could get to London within a day, but do all this and get back again??? And, if I'm not mistaken, a special licence could only be obtained *in person* from the man about to be married, and only from a bishop.
I do find it irritating when writers clearly haven't bothered to do the most basic research.
Johnston doesn't take care with her language, either: her characters are supposed to be English, and English aristocracy at that, and yet a lot of the time they talk like Americans. Simply omitting contractions doesn't cut it, Ms Johnston. For instance, no young lady of the aristocracy - or even any English person - would talk about 'fixing' hair. One 'arranges', or - for that period and class - 'dresses' hair. That's just one example of several irritating Americanisms which leapt out at me. And Ms Johnston or her editor really needed to pay a little more attention to grammar, especially punctuation.
Some of this wouldn't have mattered so much - as with the inaccuracies in Edith Layton's early books - if at any time the characters had engaged my emotions. They did not, in any way. I found them flat and one-dimensional. And when I think of what someone like Mary Balogh or Mary Jo Putney could have done with a premise like this, I feel bitterly disappointed. This premise, in the hands of a Balogh or a Kelly, would have been a tear-jerker. Johnston's book has simply left me bored.
Second in the Captive Heart Series.......2001-08-27
I Loved this book! It was better than the first one in the series. I just knew that Eliza would be able to help heal Marcus after he returned from the war. I felt so sorry for him because he had been so handsome, "The Beau," is what the ton called him. But after the scars healed he wasn't that bad. It was just too bad it took him a year and of course Miss Eliza to make him realize that and to embrace the world again. And of course his two nieces. I can't wait to read the next book about Marcus's brother who has come back from their Scotland holdings married but without his bride. This should prove to be interesting. This series is a must have. Highly reccommend!

As anthologies go, terrible. Don't waste your money!.......2001-11-09
I knew there was a reason I tend to avoid anthologies; this one has reminded me of it with a vengeance. Basically, most anthologies aren't worth the paper they're printed on: you get a selection of authors, some of whom may not be very good, and shorter stories than usual, some of which - if they are at all good - don't benefit from being compressed into under 100 pages.
This book is very definitely a case in point. We have novellas from Jo Beverley (normally excellent), Tanya Anne Crosby, Samantha James and Kathleen Woodiwiss - three authors I'd never come across before and whose work therefore I know nothing about. After reading this anthology, I know to avoid their work in future.
The Beverley novella, The Determined Bride, was interesting, but I kept feeling that I'd come in halfway through the story. Told by her soldier husband that their marriage hadn't been genuine, Kate desperately wants her baby to be legitimate. Unfortunately, her 'husband' has just been killed in battle. His commanding officer offers to marry her to give the baby a name. Afterwards, Kate returns to England with her son - but what of Captain Charles Tennant, the man she's just married? Does she want him? Does he want her? How does he really feel about having a legal son who is not his biological child?
An intriguing premise, written with something close to Beverley's usual style; but too rushed. Perhaps three stars.
Next, there is Tanya Anne Crosby's A Kiss After Midnight. Two children brought up together are separated when Victoria's father, a duke, becomes concerned about her friendship with the gardener's son. Can their love survive? What happens when Victoria needs to marry to save her estates? To begin with, I thought her hero, Thomas, was American; his internal narrative in the first few pages is entirely American in dialect and vocabulary. Too many things didn't ring true in this story for me to take it seriously. For instance, apparently Thomas and Victoria drove to Gretna Green in under five hours. So where were they? North of the Lake District and in the middle of nowhere fifty miles south of the border? Unlikely. And did Victoria really not recognise Thomas??
Oh, and *what* is "a'tall" supposed to mean? That simply isn't a word. It's not an expression used anywhere in the UK (or in Ireland, in case Crosby thinks it is). If she means 'at all', then she should say so. Terrible. One star.
The next story is Samantha James' Scandal's Bride. It was readable, more or less, though Victoria seemed to me to behave like a spoilt brat. I can't understand what Miles saw in her; he should have refused to marry her and insisted that her father sent her back to the country until she grew up. Two stars, maybe.
And finally, Kathleen Woodiwiss's Beyond The Kiss. This, I gather, is the sequel to another book by Woodiwiss. She spends the first dozen pages summarising Raelynn and Jeff's story to date (tedious exposition of an overly melodramatic tale) before launching into this story. The language is extremely overblown -talk about purple prose! The dialogue is stilted: I couldn't believe some of Jeff's speeches. Take this:
"In my lengthy quest for the woman of my dreams, I cannot deny that I've tested my heart with others, but they never assuaged that unsettled feeling gnawing at my vitals. I tell you no lie, madam, when I say that of those maidens I've courted, I favoured none with a plea to be my wife. Whatever enticements inspired me to seek their company were ephemeral, as fleeting as the morning dew." Ewwwww!!!!! I couldn't take this guy seriously at all.
In fact, I couldn't even finish this story. After 30 pages of it I'd had enough, and it's definitely put me off reading any more by Woodiwiss. I can't believe she's considered to be a top historical fiction writer! Zero stars.
Don't waste your money on this one.
Married at midnight.......2001-06-25
It's not easy to rate four stories with one mark, so I do it one by one:
The determined bride" - I give it 3 stars. It's not a bad story, but I found something missing there.
A kiss after midnight" - nice, but just a little bit unbelievable. How Victoria couldn't recognize her best friend? I don't believe a man can change so much! And that marriage ceremony ... oh, it was sooo long, I became unpatient! 3 stars.
Scandal's bride" - a bit cliche. I read so many books about London high society of 19th century I became tired of them. Why always London and 19th century? Why not France during 100 years war for example? 3 stars.
Beyond the kiss" - out of question the best of Married at midnight". I just love Woodiwiss and Birminghams. 5 stars.
And at the end - romance authors, keep writting. We need your stories to warm our hearts and make our lives easier.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, a book that I had to read every single page of!.......2000-12-14
This trilogy by Maggie Shayne contained the first of her work I had read. How sorry I am about that! I am ill a lot and to add up my book bill by the end of each month even makes me wince, let alone my husband. :) But I gotta have more of Maggie Shayne.
The first story, Miranda's Viking, was refreshingly new in concept. The fact that Rolf Magnusson's character was portrayed as extremely intelligent is believable to anyone who knows a little of the history of the Vikings at that time. They were great strategists and indeed had settled much of the coastlines of northern Europe.
The second story was a bit more predictable with an amnesia victim, but with surprising suspense twists and turns that made it very riviting. Ms. Shayne's 'people' (it's hard to call them characters they seem so human) have the same doubts, hurts and misunderstandings that happen to us all.
Finally, I loved the third story the most. Janella was alien; from another world similar to Earth. It actually follows what I believe may be true. And her doctor, Thomas Duffy, also exhibited those very human feelings that I spoke of above. Truly believable, and absolutely a fantastic read. I could not speak more highly of an author.
Thank You!.......2000-09-21
I am so glad the they are finally republishing this trilogy! It made me such a fan of this author. The bats of the night trilogy is great! I read all of them over and over. Now that they've been out of print for a while they've been hard to find. But now! I can't wait to get this. For those who love the vampire genre this is an absolute must buy. And for those who love Maggie Shayne this is a great chance to get the books that really jumpstarted her career. ENJOY!!
Great Compilation.......2000-09-20
The three stories in this compilation are fun and different.
In the first story, Miranda's Viking, Miranda O'Shea finds a 500-year-old Viking perfectly preserved in a glacial cave. When Rolf Magnusson comes to life after an accident reanimates him things become complicated for Miranda, and murder and mayhem ensue. This was a fun novel, with a great plot line and likable characters.
<- Great Story
In Kiss of the Shadow Man Caitlin Rossi loses her memory after a near fatal car accident and she and her husband are granted a second chance at love. That is if Caitlin can stay alive long enough. This story was filled with suspense and love.
<- Great story
In Out-of-this World Marriage Thomas Duffy is a doctor who has lost his faith in his vocation after one hopeless case to many w3hen his faith is restored by an alien who loves him.
<- Mediocre story.
This is definitely worth the 6.99 that I paid for it. All of these stories are reprints.

I loved this one!.......1999-12-07
I really loved this one and can't think of a single negative thing to say about it. I loved the hero who loves the heroine from afar with no expectation of a "happily ever after". . .and I loved the heroine who exceeds his every expectation as she looks far deeper than image to realize it's the man himself who stole her heart. The story and the characters are warm, full, and nicely developed with strengths and weaknesses. All in all a well rounded and well developed romance.
An Absolutely Sweet Heart Stopper.......1999-10-09
I normally prefer my romances a little on the steamy side but this story was so sweet, I could not put it down until the very last page! Don't get me wrong - the love scenes are just as heartfelt as the story is in its entirety. I absolutely loved the hero in this romance because he was so different from the typical A-Type male in most stories. Every time Stoner told himself he was still a toad with a prince's face (after his surgury) I just wanted to hug him! Every woman who reads this will wish they had a best friend like Greg Stoner.
A wonderful story!.......1999-10-03
I love what the author has done with the characters in this story. The metamorphasis of friendship to love is so smooth and believable, it's enough to make you cry. The hero is absolutely adorable.
