For almost 20 years Jerry and Esther Hicks have been presenting workshops, producing tapes and writing books to help people create the life they desire. And desire is no small word in this agenda. According to the teachings of "Abraham"--a collective name for the spiritual entities that are channeled through Esther--desire is a good and natural force within us. In fact, we are all here to fulfill our desires, according to Abraham. Yet the reason so much of us feel frustrated, is that we have difficulty knowing how to ask and receive whatever we want to be, do or have.
Although Jerry and Esther are listed as the authors, Ask and It Is Given is actually a collection of channeled messages from Abraham. Fans of Abraham and the Hicks may not find new information, but will probably be delighted to have an inspiring, updated book that speaks to the familiar conversation of attracting the life we want. Newcomers may also be intrigued by this excellent, in-depth discussion on how to change one's life by matching the vibrational energy of one's desires--taking the power of positive thinking to a whole new level.
Because this material is channeled, it often reads like The Power of Now or A Course in Miracles--not a fast food book to be devoured in one sitting. Rather, this is a book to be read in passages, with a soothing gestation period in between. It includes much advice on working with energy and emotions as well as specific chapters on increasing prosperity, reclaiming health, working with meditation, and clearing clutter for clarity. For those who are onboard with the "Laws of Attraction" and the "Art of Receiving" that Abraham speaks of, this could be one of those deliciously mysterious books that you can open to any page and it seems to offer the exact advice or insight you need right now.--Gail Hudson

Customer Reviews:
Respect This!.......2007-09-21
Great material that every single married couple should read. Dr. Eggerich provides many insights and testimonies to illuminate the woman's heart, and the man's mind. The differences between the sexes are real, complex, but navigable. The author does not paint a picture of easy steps and quick success, but emphasizes the truth that commitment to your spouse, and a great deal of humility and maturity are required to bring true peace to your marriage. A great marriage is achievable. This book brings to the table many tangible ideas that can help you attain a truly happy marriage that God has destined for you and your spouse!
The only negative thing I will say about this book is that the repititious references to the Love & Respect Conferences begin to sound a bit like a late night commercial. To be gracious, I would say that the author approaches arrogance, though he feigns transparency in revealing the fact that he and his wife have not acheived perfection, but that the techniques (for lack of a better word) in this book have helped them as well. With that said, I would highly recommend the read - both husband and wife should read this book.
Death of the Vicious Circle.......2007-09-20
A must read for long marrieds and for anyone seeking to prevent those useless, maddening repetitive arguments. This book is for both sides of the couple. The first 4 chapters lay out the logical criteria so don't take it as bashing men or women. It states what turns out to be the obvious. It is well worth the effort. After 39 years, we are in honeymoon heaven again.
Highly recommended.......2007-09-17
I highly recommend this book. The authors bring to light the keys to having a happy marriage and the insights into our own behaviors that we must understand to bring about that happiness. My wife and I benefitted greatly from this book.
great resource.......2007-08-23
Skimmed a friends copy, then bought three. One for me, one for my son and one for my daughter. Wish this book had been around back in the stone age when I was young.
Title says it all - not much substance to this book.......2007-08-21
This book should have half it's length. Most of the book is filled with stories from the author's counselling or his own life and scripture which is a good reference, but the book could have used some basic psychological observations or some scientific examples of how men and women are physically wired different in our brains. I appreciate that the author recognizes the differences in men and women and that we really should not be treated equally, this book just doesn't have much depth. If you seek the truth and have patience, many recommendations in this book will come naturally.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Working in his garden one day, Michael Pollan hit pay dirt in the form of an idea: do plants, he wondered, use humans as much as we use them? While the question is not entirely original, the way Pollan examines this complex coevolution by looking at the natural world from the perspective of plants is unique. The result is a fascinating and engaging look at the true nature of domestication.
In making his point, Pollan focuses on the relationship between humans and four specific plants: apples, tulips, marijuana, and potatoes. He uses the history of John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) to illustrate how both the apple's sweetness and its role in the production of alcoholic cider made it appealing to settlers moving west, thus greatly expanding the plant's range. He also explains how human manipulation of the plant has weakened it, so that "modern apples require more pesticide than any other food crop." The tulipomania of 17th-century Holland is a backdrop for his examination of the role the tulip's beauty played in wildly influencing human behavior to both the benefit and detriment of the plant (the markings that made the tulip so attractive to the Dutch were actually caused by a virus). His excellent discussion of the potato combines a history of the plant with a prime example of how biotechnology is changing our relationship to nature. As part of his research, Pollan visited the Monsanto company headquarters and planted some of their NewLeaf brand potatoes in his garden--seeds that had been genetically engineered to produce their own insecticide. Though they worked as advertised, he made some startling discoveries, primarily that the NewLeaf plants themselves are registered as a pesticide by the EPA and that federal law prohibits anyone from reaping more than one crop per seed packet. And in a interesting aside, he explains how a global desire for consistently perfect French fries contributes to both damaging monoculture and the genetic engineering necessary to support it.
Pollan has read widely on the subject and elegantly combines literary, historical, philosophical, and scientific references with engaging anecdotes, giving readers much to ponder while weeding their gardens. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
Every schoolchild learns about the mutually beneficial dance of honeybees and flowers: The bee collects nectar and pollen to make honey and, in the process, spreads the flowers’ genes far and wide. In
The Botany of Desire, Michael Pollan ingeniously demonstrates how people and domesticated plants have formed a similarly reciprocal relationship. He masterfully links four fundamental human desires—sweetness, beauty, intoxication, and control—with the plants that satisfy them: the apple, the tulip, marijuana, and the potato. In telling the stories of four familiar species, Pollan illustrates how the plants have evolved to satisfy humankind’s most basic yearnings. And just as we’ve benefited from these plants, we have also done well by them. So who is really domesticating whom?
Customer Reviews:
A Fascinating Read.......2007-10-07
The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan challenges the notion that mankind can control the natural world, subjugating plants to the will of the gardener. Through a discussion of four plants closely associated with human cultivation: apple, tulip, marijuana, and potato, Pollan demonstrates that organisms which possess traits desirable to the gardener have been able manipulate humans to cultivate them. Each plant has a different strategy for assuring that humans will continue to include it in their gardens. The apple, for example, is an extremely diverse species whose seeds contain millions of possible variations of both the fruit produced and the tree itself. Whether one is looking to make hard cider or munch on a crisp green fruit, the apple tree has the genetic code to produce the fruit humans look for.
In The Botany of Desire, Pollan focuses on the four plants mentioned above, placing each plant in a category, and explains how plants within that category possess characteristics which make them desirable to humans. The apple and other fruits appeal to our sense of taste, and, if fermented, our desire for inebriation. The tulip appeals to mankind's sense of beauty; marijuana, our desire to achieve an altered state of mind; the potato our need for nourishment and desire to genetically engineer crops. In short, each of these plants is successful in an evolutionary sense because it causes us to cultivate it.
Although Pollan's book is an intriguing read, I found it unsettling that he often rattles off facts and figures without citing a direct source, such as the assertion on page 219: "a potato farmer in Idaho spends roughly $1,950 an acre (mainly on chemicals, electricity and water)." Pollan does include a few pages of sources in the back of his book, but he could make a stronger argument that would stand up to academic scrutiny with the addition of endnotes.
In addition to a vast amount of research and traveling prior to writing this book, Pollan makes The Botany of Desire a quality literary work by using recurring themes to tie the four parts of the book together. Through returning to his garden at many points over the course of the book, Pollan is able to tie all four of his subjects into a common space. Approaching the reader as a fellow gardener gives him or her a sense of connection to Pollan and his garden. By the end of the book, I felt as though I knew Michael Pollan and his garden intimately. Another example of this continuity is Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and revelry. Dionysus appears in both chapters one and three, were Pollan relates him to cider, Johnny Appleseed, and mind-altering substances.
Overall, Pollan's clear style and journalistic narrative flows easily and keeps the reader entertained throughout the book. He makes effective use of descriptive details and personal experiences to relate to the reader as he argues his theme of plants manipulating humans to include them in their gardens. The Botany of Desire is a must read for anyone interested in how plants we encounter on a daily basis cause us to cultivate them around the globe.
Too much information.......2007-09-16
Started out liking the chapter on Apples, less the next and so on. It seemed like I was getting the same story in each chapter only more elaborate and wordy.
Just buy this book........................2007-09-05
I am not a botanist.Yet. But the study of evolution is quite an exciting journey, made more exciting by the mind melting, eloquent ideas posed by Mr. Pollan. Bought the audio book version, and I can't stop listining to it. From the story of Johnyy Appleseed, to Holland in search of the history of Tulips, the Amazing Marijuana Plant, and the control of the Potato. Seemed random to me. Not any more. Incredible book.
We are the world.......2007-08-31
Pollan's book is a vivid reminder of how intricately human society is woven into the ecological framework of the planet and in particular that of plants. His descriptions of how our societies have affected and been affected by just four plants opens up a series of thought-provoking questions to mull over the next time you find yourself in a garden, at the dinner table, or taking a walk outdoors. It's written with sensitivity towards those he disagrees with, and this gentle touch makes the story he's relating much more effective at prompting you as reader to engage. The weakest part of the book is the chapter on Tulips, but that is hard to criticize since the chapters on apples, marijuana and potatoes are so good.
Read this Book!
human psychology in the garden.......2007-08-02
Human psychology from the plant's perspective? Yep. That's precisely the topic of this book. When our ancestors began breeding plants to serve our desires they inevitably laid those desires bare in the phenotypes in their gardens. Pollan is impressively aware of many current themes in evolutionary biology (e.g., the function of sexual reproduction), and admirably willing to tell a story with the patience and breadth it deserves (hence four 100-page chapters instead of the usual one hundred, A.D.D. 4-page chapters). This book is not for everyone, but if you have intellectual curiosity about why some plants have come to dominate our world, this book will give you many answers and even more tools. There's nothing better I can say about a book.

Interesting but not scientific.......2007-09-25
How does a person become a spiritual/sex guru? I was curious and decided to purchase and read this book.
I did some research on David Deida, and it appears he has no formal education on either psychology or human sexuality. What he does appear to have, however, are powerful insights into eastern beliefs on sexuality greatly differing from our own western version.
Although the author sites absolutely no scientific rationale to provide support for his views, I found his views to be fascinating. For example, in a chapter "Stop Hoping for Your Women to Get Easier":
"So she will test you. She might not be fully conscious of why she is doing it, but she will poke your weak spots, especially in moments of your superficial success, in order to feel your strength. If you collapse, you've flunked the test....It never ends. A woman will always test her man for the pleasure of feeling his strength in loving, his capacity to transcend nuisance, his persistence in his own truth, and his capacity to share that truth in love with her, even when she is complaining- especially when she is complaining."
The author provides a refreshing eastern perspective on sexuality, masculinity, and feminity. It isn't entirely politically correct. But it is sexually correct. I am sure not all feminists would agree with the author's views. But those who seek the truth will find the author's unique perspective to be invigorating as having a good night with a woman who loves, and therefore tests, him.
MUST reading for all men.......2007-09-20
This is the 'how-to" book our fathers could never write (God bless them), and the best men's book on relationship I've ever read. Not because it teaches you tricks, or how to please a woman, but because it it shows men how to stand in our masculine power as our true selves, rather than someone who denies themselves to please others. I could never be in the incredible relationship I'm in today without the lessons I've learned from this book, and that includes having clear boundaries where self respect, awareness, integrity and purpose must come first in our lives. We always get the relationship we deserve...this book helps us deserve more. I use this book as a basis for the men's group I'm leading.
Great look at sex in loving relationships.......2007-09-09
I was impressed at the level of honesty by the author. He was very open about his desires and fantasies, and how these can exist in a committed relationship. He really teaches that it is not our dark side that is inappropriate, but how we handle it.
His views on the relationship dynamic were also helpful. The male and female priorities are inherently different, and once we accept these differences, love can actually exist. This theory has helped me in my personal life and relationships.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is willing to be honest about their relationships and sexual life.
Unravel the mysterious behavior of women!.......2007-08-30
Deida gives guys a great guide to understanding the often maddening behavior of their woman. He explains what they are really desiring and how we can satisfy those desires.
I've been astounded at the reactions I get from girls who I share his ideas with. They unanimously confirm that he's right on track. I wish I had known these secrets sooner in life!
A must read for any guy who wants a fulfilling relationship rather then a maddening one. Also, woman could also learn a lot about themselves and their guys by reading this.
totally made up .......2007-08-26
The author of this book must be laughing all the way to the bank. He has no credentials and doesn't support anything he says with any research - just his own opinion. Seems to be written for the man who only wants to get ahead - and this makes him feel good about it. Come on guys - we're talking the 1950s male mindset....

I just finished all of her books and have proudly cried through each one. I'm not a cryer and to read a book and cry at the same time is a world record for me, but I did it and I'm not ashamed of it because her books are worth it!!!!!
Loved it!!.......2007-08-11
This is a well written, fast paced romance. Lots of drama and excitement as well as the romantic part of the story.
Wonderful.......2007-07-30
This is yet another wonderful story by Gaelon Foley. Her attention to detail along with the sparks between the characters make this book hard to put down.
Nice read.......2007-07-21
Gaelen Foley did a nice job with this book. The first part of the book takes place in India, and it's very detailed and easy to visualize the scenes. The remainder takes place in England. Some of the storyline is a little unbelieveable, but for the most part, it is an excellent story and a fun read.

Morning and evening meditations to literally create your heart's desire.
Customer Reviews:
Hmmmmmm..........2007-10-03
I bought this CD because I really wanted to learn how to quiet my mind and I figured learning an effective way to meditate would be a good way to do it. It turns out here's this audio-book that not only claims to teach you how to meditate, but to use the meditations to manifest what you desire in your life. Sounds like a good deal, right?...
Like other reviewers, I find the constant fluctuation in pitch in Dyer's own "ahs" and "ohms" irritating as well as the religious references (I am an atheist, however I do get that other people have other beliefs - when listening to the numerous god references here, I actively interpret 'god' as 'the universe', 'oneness' or 'myself' in an attempt to get something out of the material and at least give the meditations a try). My biggest beef with this recording is that, again, I wanted to learn how to meditate as a way to quiet my ever-racing mind and I find myself getting really annoyed at the part of the morning/'ah' meditation where Dyer says (paraphrased) "The problem with being able to manifest things through sound is the mind gets in the way..." and I'm thinking "Oh yes! FINALLY I'll get the answer to quieting the constant, cacophonous racket in my head and FINALLY learn how to focus" and then he says "...so what you need is a technique to help the mind to disappear. And as the mind begins to disappear you have access to this higher consciousness...", but then he says nothing further at all about how to make your mind disappear or where to go to find this 'mind-disappearing technique' that he refers to. He just drones on with the ahs and affirmations and I'm left trying to just use my own voice to drown out the wild and wandering thoughts that keep flying through my head while at the same time trying to force myself to focus on gaining 'peace of mind' - the thing I really want to "manifest" in the first place.
I've only been doing this for a week now and I'm trying my best to be optimistic and open and just stick with it and see if I get any results, but I already feel compelled to express my disappointment in what I'm seeing here as a half-hearted and even somewhat negligent approach to producing this material.
Note to Dr. Wayne Dyer: Don't suggest that the listener need a certain thing first in order for the whole rest of your program to work and then not provide that certain necessary thing or even mention how or where to get it. I even went to your website to see if you had any clues on how to 'make your mind disappear', but didn't find any such information - maybe it's in another one of your publications (in which case I'll never know).
I love it!.......2007-09-25
I really enjoy this cd. I have been listening to it for a couple of weeks, in the morning and in the evening and it clears my mind, helps me focus, and gives me a feeling of connection and clarity. It is easy to follow along and I would recommend it to everyone.
AWFUL! Hasn't this man made enough money yet?.......2007-09-25
The Wayne Dyer one man cottage industry in banal platitudes never rests it seems! Product after product careens onto the market featuring Mr. Dyer spewing unending streams of philosphical homilies cadged from a number of other sources, liberally intermixed with his own facile and patently absurd comments such as "you have created everything in your own life". Previous titles pale in comparison with this one; could have been sub-titled "Caterwauls with gusto".
the practical and effective way to meditate .......2007-09-21
I have had some great success with this cd. This is a very effective way
to integrate meditation into your daily living. You see, my problem with meditation was doing it. This is a great way to give yourself a daily, finite program that helps to build the discipline involved to carry forward. I have the book too, and have gotten wonderful results from this disc.
Highly Recommended Meditation Tool .......2007-09-03
I have to say I love this CD! I would recommend it to anyone wanting to experiment with a different style of meditation or to deepen his or her existing meditation practice. Dr. Dyer guides the listener gently through a series of chanting and affirmations in the morning and chanting and contemplation in the evening. Unlike some reviewers here, I find his voice and the background music to be well-suited for this type of practice and have found working with the vibrations of the sound of my voice to be a real deepening experience over time.
I got this CD several years ago and did the meditations faithfully morning and night for a week. I started having very vivid dreams at night - not scary, but extremely rich and vivid. At that time I decided it was too much for me at that point in my practice, and cut back on using it as a daily meditation. However, since then I have experimented with different styles of meditation and have had periods where I've taken out this CD and used it for a few days or so at a time. I come back to it like an old friend.
The reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I am not a fan of Meher Baba and Dr. Dyer uses some of his sayings in the evening meditation. It is probably a cultural thing, but I just don't like or admire that guy. At first I found these sayings to be alternately silly, irritating, distracting, even infuriating. However, I've learned to use that time to practice gratitude and non-attachment while I'm chanting my "OM's", and usually have a very deep, rich meditation experience.

Christian lecturer and counselor John Eldredge follows up his bestselling Sacred Romance with The Journey of Desire: Searching for the Life We Always Dreamed Of, a book whose very title evokes hope and possibility. The first half of Journey of Desire argues that Christians have forsaken their heart's desire due to the failures and sorrows of life. This is tragic, Eldredge insists, because "absolutely nothing of human greatness is ever accomplished without it." A rousing call to search for the life you've only dreamed of ensues. The question naturally arises as to the "wayward" desire that lies within us, and how it is to be controlled let alone differentiated from our true desires. While the answer isn't clear, the second half of the book focuses on what Christians have to look forward to in heaven--what they are to set their hope upon. Each chapter begins with insightful literary quotes and aptly applied modern song lyrics pertaining to the upcoming text. While the contents could fuel many a theological debate, Eldredge does inspire one to consider what lies in the recesses of his heart, and for Christians hopefully it is a primarily desire for God alone. --Jill Heatherly
Book Description
Sometimes it seems we just can't get what we want. Circumstances thwart our best-laid plans. We struggle to live a heartfelt life. Worst of all, says Eldredge, the modern church mistakenly teaches its people to kill desire (calling it sin) and replace it with duty or obligation (calling it sanctification). As a result, at best Christians tend to live safe, boring lives of resignation. At worst, their desire eventually breaks out in destructive ways such as substance abuse, affairs, and pornography addictions. In
The Journey of Desire, Eldredge invites readers to rediscover God-given desire and to search again for the life they once dreamed of.

Recommended with caveats.......2007-06-19
HIGHLY recommended. Other books of Eldredge may be more popular and interest generating. However, this is his foundational book. This book provides brilliant insight into our desires.
The caveat is that one must complete the reading of this book by reading a couple of other authors.
First, John Piper's books such as Desiring God or The Pleasures of God.
Second, Lou Giglio's book - The Air I Breathe.
These two authors complement Eldredge and corrects Eldredge's more 'man-centric' focus.
Discover Hope--the energizer of faith and love.......2007-06-04
I cannot state strongly enough how enthusiastically I recommend this book. I truly believe this message is a gift from the Lord, delivered through Eldredge. There is a reason that faith, hope, and love are the three cardinal virtues; yet Christians often seem to be tremendously lacking in hope. And for our faith and love to be what they should, they need the empowerment of hope.
The basic message of the book is this: our hearts demand Paradise; we simply cannot arrange for it in this life; it is indeed coming (for those who will receive it from the Lord).
"Journey of Desire" is a wonderful guide to growing in hope, to understanding why we're deficient in it, to illuminating the threats to it...to understanding life. This book is a compelling guide and invitation to the life that's worth living. Absolutely, positively "must" reading. Indeed, more than simply reading this book, it deserves to be studied, meditated on, digested. The message delivered in this book is one of the most important I've ever received.
p.s. I've also read "Wild at Heart", "Epic", "Waking the Dead", and "Sacred Romance". They are all excellent, all important. I believe the Lord has much to say to us through Eldredge.
Great read!.......2007-04-16
Books are highly subjective, but I have always liked John's books. Be aware of all the pompous critics out there who claim that John is 'aloof' or not quite 'in touch'. I know that God has used his writing in wonderful ways for myself, and MANY that I know. And that should be testament to itself. Always check everything that you read against or compared to the Scriptures, but read his book for yourself before deciding to take the 'advice' of the raters!
Join the Journey!.......2007-03-16
I love this book! John Eldredge takes the reader on an adventure. What a book!
Pass it forward - An abundant life is a passionate life.......2007-03-13
The author captivates his readers with his authenticity. I've read this book at least 3 times and find new nuggets every time. I have used it in coaching and mentoring and most recently I gave it to a friend to "pass it forward" (instructing the next person to do the same). Read this book with a prayerful attitude, then read "The Dream Giver" by Bruce Wilkinson. Many people travel through this life without experiencing the pleasure of passionate living. Passionate living is not based on our circumstances, it is based on relationship. Our relationship with Jesus Christ is defined by His passion for life and for us. "He is not the God of the dead, but of the living..." (Lk 20:38). Read the book and then PASS IT FORWARD!

The Fulfillment of All Desire.......2007-05-12
Second to none! This saintly leadership into holiness through lives of seven saints speaks to the very core of what God expects of all humans, to recognize the purpose for what God placed each and every person on the face of this earth to be. God desires us to love Him, will not force us, can exist without us, and yet guides us through the examples of others to serve Him in a capacity that we can all attain. The examples of prayerfullness are levels of deep communication with God and He with us.
You will find yourself in holiness in this book or it will find you at a depth that you can emerge to become more holy.
Seven Spiritual Directors - The Doctors are In! .......2007-05-10
I am still reading this book - but I read a page or two - then rush to Amazon to order a copy for a friend who will love it; read another page or two or three - put it down, swooning a bit while running to the computer to order another copy for someone I know who will love it - at this rate I may never finish this book! But, this I know for certain - The Fulfillment of All Desire is going to be one of my favorite books of all time. It is already changing my life! I give it 10 stars so you must double my rating, Amazon!
Ralph Martin may have done his finest work and The Fulfullment of All Desire possibly will be his finest hour. This book does not just tell us what we need to do - and what we already know we need to do - it tells us how to do it!!! These Doctors of the Church have "been-there-and-back" and know how to help us find our way. As we listen and learn, we will begin to live the life of one with the Saintly Fulfillment of All Desire. Just order this book! I am working on "affection for sin" right now.
The Doctors are in! St. Augustine, St. Francis De Sales (I am in his office), St. Catherine of Siena, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux. I have a message from one of these doctors and it is this: "In the first place it should be known that if anyone is seeking God, the Beloved is seeking that person much more." That is from John of the Cross.

Oh taste and see that the Lord is good!.......2007-09-17
It is a tremendous grace that a friend directed me towards this dear book, and because of it I will never be the same. This book is a jar that has been carefully filled at the fountain of living waters. "Oh taste and see that the Lord is good." I have tasted and seen here...
This book will take you soaring on the winds of the manifold Glories of God. He is the treasure to be ultimately delighted in now and for eternity.
Any resource that helps one to see more clearly that God alone can completely satisfy the heart's infinite thirst is priceless. This book is such a resource and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Life Changing!.......2007-08-26
This one book is worth 50 stars. It is that great and wonderful a read. What I love about Dr. Piper is his exegetical skills. He is able to work with the language and context to bring out what is normally overlooked.
In this book, you will find that God is to be desired in every facet of your life. Desiring God, after all, is command by God (Psa. 37:4).
Unbelievably Good.......2007-08-09
This book is so life-changing that I bought copies for everyone in our church and am leading a book study on it.
It will answer many questions you've had for years and some you didn't know you had on the glory of God and why we worship Him.
It will also help you understand better the relationship between us and him and will help you see who you are in Christ.
In my opinion, this book is required reading for all Christians.
The right concept, but...........2007-07-06
I have a hard time rating this book lowly because the concept that it teaches is sorely needed in the modern church. However, although I think John Piper makes his points clearly and the book is probably readable for most people, I am giving a rating based on my own tastes. The intention of the two star rating is not to discourage others from buying this book, but to communicate my personal opinion of it.
I have read about half-way through the book and have decided to stop trying to feign interest. The reason I have difficulty reading the book really is stylistic. Mr. Piper makes his points and tries to commit them to the reader's memory by reiterating those same points over and over again. Although new biblical text or references are made each time, the points become lost in the tedious labor of revisiting them four of five times before moving on to the next point.
Again, this writing style is probably perfectly acceptable, and even desirable, to many readers. So don't let my review discourage you if you are interested in learning about the ideology of the true enjoyment of God. After all, there really is no other way to experience Him.
Actually life-changing.......2007-07-01
Once in a while, a privileged person happens to read a magnificent book at just the right point in their life, and it permanently changes them for the better. In 2005, I was that person, and Desiring God was that book.
In it, Piper plumbs the Bible to find the purpose for which the universe and in particular mankind was created, concluding that "the chief end of man is to glorify God *by* enjoying Him forever," paraphrasing the old Westminster confession. He then develops the philosophical, theological, and practical implications of this stunning phrase.
I cannot recommend any non-canonical book more highly.

Published in 1949 by John Lehman. Very good copy in a very good dust jacket with slight wear. There are minor foxing, nicks, and wear to the dust jacket, with an ink inscription. The basis of the 1951 film (winner of three Academy Awards) starring Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden, Williams's play is one of the works by which 20th-century America defines itself. First English edition of this landmark, Pulitzer-Prize-winning play, featuring Williams's riveting creations.
Customer Reviews:
The Glorious Bird's iconic melodrama.......2007-06-18
This is probably the most famous piece of literature from the US that I hadn'd read yet, until now. Nor watched as a play or movie. And still I seemed to know everything about it.
Having just read Gore Vidal's memoirs, where he calls TW the 'glorious bird', I was motivated to finally get acquainted with the streetcar. What fun. It is Gone with the Wind updated for the 20th century. It is the downsizing of rural gentry. It shows downward social mobility in a narrative framework of Southern Gothic. It is powerfully vulgar and perceptive. It is so politically not correct. ('Polacks are like Irish, only less highbrow.')
But with all the mad fun, let's be clear about this: despite the popular use of the term 'tragic' for the descent of Ms. Blanche into madness, this is not really a tragedy in the full sense of the word. Being a piece of stage writing makes it one only in the sense of not being a comedy. What it is, it is a really great melodrama.
A word about the genius casting for the movie: Marlon Brando dominated it more than the text justifies. Gore Vidal says in his memoirs that Kazan actually destroyed the play by pushing the Blanche character into 2nd row. He says that TW did not mind, since it made him famous.
A Streetcar Named ... Classic.......2007-06-12
"I have always depended on the kindness of strangers."
Blanche's final decree before being taken away to the insane asylum is an ironic remark which Tennessee Williams uses to harshly criticize the promiscuous lifestyle of Miss DuBois in his classic "A Streetcar Named Desire." Moreover, it is a testimony to how Blanche sets herself up for disaster.
Blanche DuBois is the southern belle whom the play revolves around, and she is certainly a character to be remembered for the ages. She escapes her deeply immoral past by fleeing to her sister Stella's homely apartment in New Orleans, only to discover that it is a complete cultural departure. A high-maintenance chauvinist upon arrival, Blanche is critical of everything in Stella's life, from her husband to her living arrangements. Blanche is dishonest about her past, lies about her alcoholism and covers up affairs with students--the complete opposite of moral perfection. Her constant affairs with unknown men back in Laurel caused Blanche to be kicked out of a two-bit hotel, and her affair with a teenage boy lost Blanche her job, illustrating Blanche as a wanton woman.
So where is this "kindness of strangers" that Blanche so respects? The irony lies in that Blanche has not always been treated well by strangers, and that her relationships with these sorts of people often fare poorly, and so the fact that she relies on them for the welfare of her life is paradoxical. Williams condemns Blanche of her loose lifestyle, sleeping around with various men whom she does not know, and ultimately sentences her to the insane asylum, demonstrating that those with lifestyles like that of Blanche will merit the same fate. The southern belle image which Blanche allegedly epitomizes soon fades, and Williams takes this fact and emphasizes it to the audience. All of this adds up to a cornucopia of shameful aspects which Blanche attempts to hide from by deluding herself in fantastical images. Blanche has always differentiated herself as being more idealistic than realistic, and so her retreat into her fantasies is no surprise--she needs to escape the harshness of the real world. She herself is fading, and so her mentality follows.
It is an important lesson which Williams teaches us about distinctions between reality and unlikely fantasies. Despite the fact that the real world may bring obstacles and roadblocks, as shown through the relationship between Stanley and Stella (which I won't delve into as my focus is on Blanche), living in reality is always a better idea than drowning yourself in fantasies. Blanche carries with her a whole plethora of stigmas and taboos that Williams deems necessary for her loose character, so that he may, in turn, teach lessons of morality to the audience. Blanche is a complex character that we can all learn from, and Williams makes that clear through the intricate development of Blanche. "Streetcar" is certainly one of the most interesting plays that I have ever read, and it is definitely a necessary component to the shelf of American classics.
A tragic story that illustrates the pitiful life of a lost woman.......2007-06-12
Despite its strange title, this book is a guaranteed to motivate you to appreciate your own life by learning of the tragedies of others. In the story of "A Streetcar Named Desire," the plot follows one particular character, Blanche, who is constantly struggling to accept the conditions of her current, impoverished conditions. Even after becoming homeless and being forced to move into her sister Stella's home in order to re-invent her life after her troubled past, she continues to lie to cover up her past's secrets and ironically ruins her chances of ever starting anew. Throughout the story, a reader can witness how her lies cause her to lose a potential husband and all in all, lose her sanity. Because of her reluctance to inform even her sister of a shameful past, she causes distrust amongst her peers which leads her to be unable to lead a normal relationship with society. Her distrustful nature even causes her peers and even her sister to become suspicious of the stories she desperately tells to cover up the failures of her life. Follow the pitiful character, Blanche, as she deals with the struggles of her life, her family and her peers. Thus, the author illustrates that by understanding your mistakes, circumstances and the need for change, you could always change your destiny, Can Blanche ever come to her senses? I highly recommend "Streetcar Named Desire" because anyone can draw an important lesson from the mistakes of Blanche and the simple message of reality over fantasy can easily be seen in this book.
The Streetcar.......2007-06-12
Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire is an excellent tragic play focused on the pathetic lifestyle of the play's protagonist, Blanche DuBois. Blanche is annoyed and obnoxious on all levels; but the way she demeans herself and essentially destroys her own dignity demands the readers' sympathy.
Blanche is forced to travel to New Orleans to stay at her sister's house ever since her plantation Belle Reve (beautiful dream in French) was lost. The name is important, as Blanche completely submerges herself in these beautiful dreams and freely throws away any ounce of reality she refuses to see. Once we see her sister Stella, we immediately know that they are extremely different as Stella is the realistic sister who moved on from a turbulent past. Personalities collide when Stella introduces Blanche to her husband, the infamous Stanley Kowalski. Yes, his is blunt, brutal, and barbaric. But his personality adds complexity to the novel as he is the foil of Blanche, which ends in some major tragedies.
Marlon Brando fans will probably revere the way he acts out Stanley in the film adaptation. I prefer reading the book.
a great classic delivering a moving message about being comfortable in your own skin.......2007-06-12
The play as a whole representing the trials and tribulations of reinventing oneself is a caveat to those that attempt to achieve this remarkable goal as the characters in A Street Car Named Desire are shown as incapable of fixing their own lives. This is shown none more than in the protagonist, Blanche DuBois, who struggles continually with the battles of her past actions, signifying the decline of the American Dream that she had previously believed to be attainable.
America was once thought of as a place where anything could be achieved with ease, no matter how severe the obstacle; but Tennessee Williams proves this idea wrong as no matter how far Blanche goes to start over in life, her past always haunts her. Blanche has made some brutal mistakes in her life and tries throughout the entire play to escape from them. She leaves her hometown after being forced out and decides to start anew by living with Stella in New Orleans. Once there, she lies about her mistakes to try and escape from them. She is able to do this for a while, but her secrets are soon discovered. Once Stanley confronts her with the truth, Blanche realizes that this dream, this American dream she had had is unattainable. She cannot run away from her past no matter how hard she tries.
What Blanche does not realize, however is that maybe she cannot rely on the American Dream to save her, but she could have decided to change by recognizing her mistakes and moving on from there. Many people make the mistake of thinking that by coming to America, things will just work out in their favor. They do not realize that this takes much work to do. In this sense, the traditional American Dream has died, leaving many people helpless in the world, just like Blanche. The reason that this fails though is that Blanche's one method of starting over is to simply lie. She does not change herself so she is bound to make those same mistakes again, as she eventually does.
Blanche's actions are intended to warn those against simply trusting it to faith that they will be able to start over in life. Not everything can be forgotten because sometimes one's actions affect others around them. It is not just their own lives that they are gambling with but also anyone's who is in close contact with them. It is not enough to rely on the idea of an American Dream to save oneself. Actions must be taken to benefit lives. A sense of apathy will go nowhere in life. Ultimately, change brings about change, so that is what it needed.
