Congratulations, you're expecting a baby! What you may not be expecting is all of the requisite gear you "need" to look after your dear bundle. Fear not. Denise and Alan Fields, authors of Bridal Bargains, are here to tell you what's super and what's silly, and how to find it at the best price. You'll learn all about how (and where) to shop for a crib and dresser (including how to get European styling at reasonable prices), what you need in bedding and what can be skipped (a hint: no baby requires the $200 quilt!), which clothing brands are safest and least expensive, and how to shop for monitors, toys, car seats, strollers, books, videos, and more. The authors have field-tested every major brand (and several of the minor ones), and they provide star ratings and annotations at the end of every chapter. A helpful feature in each chapter called "Wastes of Money" will steer you away from $35 Baby Air Jordans and frilly diaper stackers that match your bedding. If that's not enough, they offer a money-back guarantee: If the book doesn't save you at least $250 in baby expenses, they'll refund the price of the book. Well researched and written in a witty and comfortable tone, Baby Bargains should be required reading for every safety- and money-conscious parent-to-be. --Rebecca A. Staffel

5 out of 5 stars Must have for expecting parents.......2007-10-10

This is a great guide for parents and soon to be parents, or anyone looking to find the best deals and best products for baby. My wife and I were very surprised at some of the reviews and information in this book and have found is very helpful in not only getting good deals, but making sure we have the safest product. More often than not the most expensive is not the best one (strollers and baby monitors were especially helpful).
We both highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for first time parents.......2007-10-06

This is a great book for first time parents! I was clueless on what to get for our first baby, and this book was a lifesaver. I even took it with me to register, so that I could refrence it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-10-06

Having a baby is stressful enough without the shopping experience, when it is time to buy is the whole experience is overwhelming, everybody has an opinion, the baby store gives you a big list of items which you might not need but they want you to buy, it is even worst if you are having your first baby, this books answer these questions: what to buy? when to buy? how much money should I spend? totally worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-10-05

This is a great book and really helped us as first time parents figure out what we did and did not need. It is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it!.......2007-10-03

I received this book as a baby gift before my child was born. We took it with us to register as well as when we'd go to the store on our own. It was an excellent resource. Also it really helped because my husband wanted to get used or hand me down items to save on money, but this book really tells you what you need to buy new, so that helped settle that disagreement for us! Our baby is now 4 1/2 months old and I still reference this book from time to time. I had it with us when we were in the store picking out a crib and a couple was having a hard time deciding on a mattress, so I showed them the book and she thought it was a great book as well. Excellent buy!

3 out of 5 stars it's okay.......2007-10-09

I guess not so much what I expected. It has good advise but it keps saying the same thing over and over. So don't let the size fool you. Good info just stated too many times. Also I really wish there were some color in it.However it gives me a good head start on planing.

5 out of 5 stars Don't plan your wedding without this book.......2007-10-05

This is the single most helpful piece of literature about wedding planning I've read. I'm currently planning my own wedding and frankly don't know where I'd be if my cousin hadn't sent me a copy of this gem. Particularly the chapter on wedding gowns has been awesome... I am armed to make my wedding purchases without being swindled, as the entire wedding industry seems committed to taking every last cent!!! This book helps you keep it all in perspective. I couldn't recommend it more enthusiastically!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resources........2007-09-25

This book has tons of ideas on how to save money - some of them are more helpful than others. The only downside is that as time goes on the resources they list are outdated, but that's not a huge drawback. I used this book as a reference during my four month engagement and would highly recommend it for anyone wanting to save some money (who doesn't!).

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for wedding planning.......2007-09-16

A recently married friend lent me her copy of this book when I got engaged and it has been the most consistent, appreciated publication in all of the crazy wedding planning stuff that has piled up in my apartment. I loved it so much that I sent my parents a copy via Amazon. They are on-location of the wedding site and we have been planning with them long-distance. I intended for my mom to read it, but found out a few days later that my dad had been reading it all of the way through and not only learning a lot, but enjoying it! This book is not just about bargains, it is about navigating the planning of an event that is both completely foreign but incredibly personal. Highly recommended.

Book Description

When Brooke Shields welcomed her newborn daughter to the world, her joyful expectations were quickly followed by something unexpecteda crippling depression. In what is sure to strike a chord with the millions of women who suffer from depression after childbirth, Brooke Shields shares how she, too, battled a condition that is widely misunderstood, despite the fact that it affects many new mothers. She discusses the illness in the context of her life, including her struggle to get pregnant, the high expectations she had for herself and that others placed on her as a new mom, and the role of her husband, friends, and family as she struggled to attain her maternal footing in the midst of a disabling depression. Ultimately, Brooke shares how she found a way out through talk therapy, medication, and time.

5 out of 5 stars depicts PPD perfectly.......2007-09-30

I, too, had severe PPD. I, too, have written a book about it. This is 50 times better than Marie Osmond's book. If you are gettting it because it's written by a celebrity..well I suppose that's appealing to some people...but this was not like Marie's book in that regard. Brooke comes across as a regular person. PPD is not picky about who it afflicts. Brooke is real and open and brutally honest. She helped me identify some feelings I'd not been able to express. Thank you, Brooke, for doing such a great job! I have no idea what you could've done better. In my opinion, this was dead on and flawless. If you don't buy my book, buy Brooke's!

3 out of 5 stars Just OK - not really that much on PPD.......2007-09-10

It felt like the PPD was discussed very briefly and most of the book was her telling her story of how she grew up, how she wanted a baby, how hard it was to get there, how she missed her old life, how she then loved her baby, how cute her baby is, how she balanced her career and motherhood, her relationship with her mother, yada yada yada. I certainly wouldn't read this book to learn about PPD. It is just an easy read book if you are interested in looking into the lives of celebrities.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life!!.......2007-09-04

I'm so glad i bought this book. I was suffering from postpartum depression, and I was ashamed of the thoughts that i was thinking and why i didnt feel a bond with my daughter... I read the book and it made me realize I needed to do something about it. GREAT BOOK!!

5 out of 5 stars Honestly Written.......2007-08-15

Honestly written, so truthful,I am sure it was as painful to write as it was to experience. This had to be. For Tom (Jack*ff) Cruise to go spurting off his ideas and opinions(opinions obviously not solicited from Brook or her husband) was not only in poor taste, but dangerous. What is wrong with him? Not that I think America at large listens to Tom, I for one will not buy any paper, book, see any movie or show that endorses him. As for his poor wife katie Holmes she looks miserable and should run....not walk away from this marriage. He is as lousy as a bedside doctor as he is an actor. Matt Lauer should have b*tched slapped him when he got in his face. While I myself had uneventful pregnancies and no problems after(NO blues, thank God)It is thoughtful and honest and gives other women hope. God Bless Brook and her children.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! .......2007-07-09

I never enjoyed a book this much in my life! YOU ROCK BROOKE!! I love the way she writes and her humor was so refreshing. I felt the same pain and the tears would stream down one minute and laugther the next. I'm 37yrs now and I suffered 2 Ectopic pregnancies with in five months of each other and wound up in the hospital both times having emergency surgery. We went thru the IUI procedure as well and now we are moving on to IVF next month August 2007 and I'm so grateful to have read this book. Please write more Brooke. Thank you so much thank you!!!

The old adage is especially true for Perfect Madness: don't judge this eminently readable book by its stern and academic-looking cover. Judith Warner's missive on the "Mommy Mystique" can be read in a weekend, if readers have the time. Of course--according to the book--many would-be readers will have to carve out the hours in between an endless sea of child-enriching activities, a soul-sucking swirl that leads many mothers into a well of despair. Warner's book seeks to answer the question, "Why are today's young mothers so stressed out?" Whether shuttling kids to "enriching" after-school activities or worrying about the quality of available child care, the women of Perfect Madness describe a life far out of balance. Warner spends most of the book explaining how things got to this point, and what can be done to restore some sanity to the parenting process.

Warner draws her research from a group of 20- to 40-year-old, upper-middle-class, college-educated women living in the East Coast corridor. In other words, mirror images of Warner herself. Her limited scope has caused controversy and criticism, as have some of her more sweeping statements. (For example, Warner blames second-wave feminism--rather than corporate culture--for the many limitations women still experience as they try to balance the work-family dynamic.) Other favorite targets include the mainstream media, detached fathers, and controlling, "hyperactive" mothers who create impossible standards for themselves, their children, and the community of other parents around them. Warner begins and ends the book with a compelling argument for the need for more societal support of mothers--quality-of-life government "entitlements" such as those found in France. It's these big-picture issues that will provide the solution, she says, even if most mothers don't want to discuss them because they consider the topic "tacky, strident-sounding, not the point." In these sections on governmental policy, and also when she steps back, encouraging women to be kinder to each other, the author's warmth comes across easily on the page. Pilloried by some readers and supported by others, Warner should at least be applauded for opening up the Pandora's Box of American motherhood for a new generation. And if readers are of two minds about the issues raised Perfect Madness, as Warner sometimes seems to be herself, it's a fitting reaction to a topic with few easy answers. --Jennifer Buckendorff END

Book Description

The paradigm-shattering bestseller that investigates how women have fallen into the trap of "total motherhood," and how that mind-set damages them and their relationships with their husbands and children.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly written.......2007-10-09

I'm one of those mothers who doesn't have time for anything beyond the essentials and living with the multiple varieties of stress Warner discusses, both self-imposed, culturally imposed and politically imposed. So I don't have time to give a proper review, of course. But I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the book and how much it helped me at least understand, if not overcome, the central issues facing me as a mother in the full-time workforce in a society that does not support parents and families to achieve a healthy balance between work and parenting. Thank you for writing this book, and please continue to discuss these issues and promote alternative visions for society.

3 out of 5 stars The personal is not always the political.......2007-07-15

Perfect Madness is the very apt description of a style of parenting that currently prevails among the educated and economically privileged classes of American society. Many readers will experience a chilling recognition on reading Judith Warner's descriptions of the vagaries of this sinister family ideology and the quality of desperation in the perfectionism and competitiveness that frantically drive the machine of many family lives.

Perfect Madness is an ambitious and well-intentioned book, but it is undermined by a restrictive thesis and swamped by often irrelevant research and statistics. The book is further robbed of authority by a writing style that vacillates between the vernacular and the scholarly, and by the constant jumping back and forth through the chronology of its own research.

The logistical problems of inadequate child-care and workplace family support that the author blames squarely on a self-serving government and on a cold and uncaring social infrastructure are not, as the book would imply, key factors underlying a lack of personal fulfillment in the middle-class experience of parenting. The modern claim of unmet entitlement is no less than the hallmark of a western-world existential crisis, the refrain of a culture of greed that neglects its own mind-life while continuing to abdicate personal responsibility and answerability for its own choices, relinquishing free will to the dictates of government and wallowing in the passivity of a pitiful absence of self-determinism.

The author claims that this is a "very personal" book. In this case the personal is less political than self-indulgent. The author presents a lengthy and meandering narrative of the journey of modern middle-class woman through the landscape of an inhospitable patriarchal society, the perversities of careless mothering, and into the barren and hopeless terrain of mother-as-victim. The author regrettably pays little tribute to the generations of wise and loving women along the way who created our current wealth of privilege and opportunity: women who made informed choices and brave decisions, and who created joyful lives for themselves and their children without effacing their own psyche. Thanks to these benefactors women can indeed aspire to have it all. However, only the naïve or the very greedy would expect to have it all at one sitting.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Discussion.......2007-05-27

Judith Warner's "Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety" is an excellent discussion on today's motherhood. Refreshingly candid, Warner takes apart all sides of the motherhood debate using examples from the 1950s to today and presents them in no-nonsense fashion. She explains, "[w]hat I see is that working and stay-at-home moms do what they do not so much by choice--by choosing from a series of options arrayed before them like cereals on a supermarket shelf--but out of a very immediate and pressing sense of personal necessity. There are many aspects to that sense of necessity--money, status, ambition, the needs of the children and of the family as a whole--all of which play themselves out, in various way, in individual women's lives. And all of those aspects of personal necessity are part and parcel of the condition of motherhood--not external to it, not accessory to it, not a `selfish' deviation from it" (pp 145-6). This is the gist of the entire book. All of the discussion grows from and points back to this concept. And the concept? We're turning ourselves inside out and upside down trying to be the ultimate "mother"--having it all, trying to be perfect in a balancing act that has been unachievable from the start. Straightforward, unbiased, and balanced, "Perfect Madness" is very well researched from where I sit. Towards the end, it felt like Warner veered off subject a little. While some of the information she discusses can be considered interesting--economics, housing, body-image and eating disorders--especially in how they relate to our view of modern motherhood and its requirements to be "done correctly," this is background information for explaining what she terms the "Perfect Madness." Warner does eventually make it work, integrating this information back into the original subject matter and making the book come together as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars Motherhood requires and deserves compensation.......2007-03-10

Ms. Warner perfectly articulates the symptoms of the "dis-ease" running rampant in American motherhood. It was reassuring to learn that other women were experiencing the same distress, exhaustion and sense of betrayal that I felt.

Ms. Warner points to the "valorizing" of motherhood as a way to deflect attention away from the underlying problem. I totally agree. This is an insidious psychological weapon used by both women and men to keep mothers pacified in the short-term. But a rose on Mothers Day and a pat on the back do not pay the bills. Women do themselves and their children a disservice by labeling their childbearing and childrearing tasks as "priceless." This work is noble, extremely valuable in monetary terms, and without it society would stop functioning altogether.

The bottom-line problem is that mothers are not compensated for their work. What male would choose a career that required 24/7 work with no paycheck, hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses, and no benefits or retirement? Not one.

Our market economy was designed by males, and it serves males' natural talents and abilities. Female labor was placed outside the system, labeled "priceless," and given a zero monetary value. This left mothers with nothing to bargain with in the marketplace, and dependent upon male partners in order to survive.

Since mothers no longer have tribes to support them, the logical and only answer is that government must subsidize their work via corporate taxation. The corporations that benefit from new generations of customers and workers must help foot the bill to create and raise these new humans.

Sans this scenario, mothers will remain degraded and financially used by society. The anger, resentment and "dis-ease" of motherhood will continue.

Mothers, wake up. There is nothing noble about teaching your daughters that their natural talents are "above monetary value." They deserve reverence AND compensation.

4 out of 5 stars Quite enjoyable.......2006-07-31

I was surprised that I liked this book. I was not expecting to as it came up paired with "The Mommy Myth" on Amazon. However, this book was much better than The Mommy Myth, which I personally thought was terrible.

This book describes the pressure that today's mothers feel with parenting. Working or staying at home, all moms feel similar pressures to be perfect and produce perfect children. If our children do anything bad, we think it must be a reflection of some bad parenting choice we made. In a sense, our children are extensions of ourselves, not their own beings.

It should be clear in the reviews that this book is aimed at middle-upper middle class-wealthy mothers. The author comes out and says that at the beginning of the book.

I think this book does a good job of summing up parenting today. However, there were a few things I did not like about the book, which is why I docked it one star:

1. The author talks about breastfeeding as if it is some nice "extra" like an extravagant birthday party or the latest, cool toy that everyone wants. I think breastfeeding clealy belongs in a different category, especially with it's many benefits proved more and more definitively by science each year. However, there is absolutely no advantage you are giving your child by spending $1,000 on a birthday party when he is 2 (and won't even remember it most likely). I thought this author had some personal vendetta against breastfeeding. Mothers get plenty of pressure to bottle feed with all the "free gifts" they hand out at the clinics and hospitals. If anything, it is pressure from both the breast and bottle camps. However, this author says nothing about mothers annoyed that doctors assume they will fail at nursing their babies and encourage them to take the free formula (just in case).

2. The author talks about how parents are doing way too much for their children. However, she does not discriminate when this behavior is appropraite and when it is not. With a baby or toddler up to age 2, the child's needs should come first and be met quickly. Doing this will leave you with an easier to care for child later. However, after about that age, parents need to make sure the kids know that the parent is in charge and children need to be expected to entertain themseves and do as much for themselves as is age appropriate.

3. Yes, parents today have many pressures but the author does not talk enough about how much of this monster parents have created themselves. We expect so much now, the houses we want, the cars we want, etc. People a few generations ago were satisfied with much less. Just because the neighbors have it, does not mean we have to want it. We can say no. We need to do that more often. Don't blame the "keeping up with the Joneses" train of thought. Kids don't need tons of extracurriculars at age 4, they don't even need elaborate swingsets in the backyard when they can walk to the park. They do not need fancy birthday parties or academic lessons before they start school. They may not even need preschool-espcecially if they have neighborhood friends or siblings. All the really need is some free time and you to go away so they can make up their own rules and play however they want, get lost in the fun of playing.

If you feel that you are caught in the whirlwind of outrageous (and silly) parenting pressures today, I'd recommend reading John Rosemond's: A Family of Value. It is great for working or stay at home parents. You will feel much better after you read it and give yourself permission to not run yourself ragged. Today's moms have got to be the generation of moms who do the most hoop jumping for their children. Today's moms listen to this and that person with a PhD telling them what a "good mother" does. They compare themselves to the "ideal mother", see they are not as good (most of the ways we are told to behave is not humanly possible 100% of the time), see they don't measure, and then feel terrible about themselves. Moms have to stop beating themselves up and thinking their children are scarred for life because they got yelled at once, or because mom told them she is busy right now and can't play with them. Mom has a life too. As for the children, I'd also recommend looking into one of the many groups starting around the country that are encouarging parents to help children reclaim free time.

All in all, a good book that talks about the pressures facing parents today.

McGraw has distilled his more than two decades of counseling experience into a seven-step strategy he calls "Relationship Rescue."

"I'm prepared to kick a hole in the wall of the pain-ridden, unhappy maze you've gotten yourself into, and provide you clear access to action-oriented answers and instructions on what you must do to have what you want," says Dr. Phil. His aim is to expose and eliminate the saboteurs that cause senseless damage to already-fragile marriages, and, like an emotional root canal, to replace them with values he says provide positive results. If you follow Dr. Phil's strategy, he will lead you on a precise journey to uncover your heart and then share it with your partner as part of taking the "risk of intimacy."

Dr. Phil leads you to "reconnect with your core" in the first five steps of his seven-step strategy. By no means a quick fix, there are in-depth and rigorous questionnaires, surveys, tests, and profiles that require a "brutally candid" mindset, with such fill-in-the-blanks as "List five things that today would make you fall out of love with your partner." With this internal work accomplished, you'll then move on to reconnecting with your partner during a two-week, half-hour-a-day short course. As a "dyad," you and your loved one take turns giving monologues on topics such as "The most positive thing I took away from my mother and father's relationship was..."

Once the "reconnection" has been established, Dr. Phil says the work shifts to a management role, as relationships are always a work in progress. Dr. Phil humorously refers to his own marriage throughout the book, sharing his mishaps and victories in learning to accept and enjoy what he sees as fundamental but complementary differences between men and women. --John Youngs

Dr. Phil McGraw, whose first book, Life Strategies, was a number one New York Times national bestseller, now turns his expertise to the primary area of concern troubling most people: their relationships. In his tell-it-like-it-is style that already has had an impact on millions of viewers of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Phil blows the whistle on the rhetoric of traditional "couples therapy." Instead he tells you at the very beginning that no matter what state your relationship is in, not only are you responsible for it, you are responsible for rescuing it. McGraw explodes the ten most popular myths about good relationships and provides a series of fascinating exercises that allow for a step-by-step process for you to reconnect with your partner. This is a transformative book that not only will put you back on track with your partner, but you'll know that you are back on track with yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Don't like Dr. Phil?.......2007-10-06

I was wary of the cult of Dr. Phil, but this guy is famous for a reason. He doesn't mess around with cheesy, flowery language and his methods really work. Read the whole book and do the work and you will end up a happier person.

4 out of 5 stars Foundation Work.......2007-09-10

Relationship Rescue is targetted for those people who have relationships in serious trouble. However, it is also useful for those people who feel that there relationship is stagnating or going through a significant transition period, such as having children, children leaving home or one partner retiring.

The methods are well-established for handling most problems between any two people. You start with yourself. What needs cleaning up in your life? Because, truly, you are the only person that you can control, and even that can be a problem!

The methods given to reconnect with a partner are clear and powerful. If both parties can give the relationship a fighting chance, these steps might be what you need to reconnect, rediscover and fall in love all over again.

On the other hand, the book might be too overwhelming for some people who are in a real crisis. In that case, it could be a companion guide as the couple (or even just one of the couple) works with a helping professional such as a clergy memeber, coach or therapist.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and amazing.......2007-08-11

Phil McGraw never ceases to amaze me. Marriage therapy in-person would cost thousands to have this sort of information given out on a silver platter. The only thing missing is the obvious direct and personal feedback, but isn't that worth $20? vs. $100 per hour? This is a no-nonsense book or CD that will help you grow and deal with life even better than you ever have. If one takes the time to self-reflect and realize how much control we actually do have in our lives to allow conflict or not; it's actually all very simple. I do not know of a more gifted doctor at reading between the lines and caring about families and life's situations than Dr. Phil. To generate the quality of TV and also produce such excellent resources to us all is truly a blessing. He deserves every bit of his success and to enjoy his practice. Highly recommend this if you are willing to open your mind yourself and not expect someone else to solve your own problems, rather appreciate that someone helps give "you" the gift of insight and clarity to solve your own. The relationship will only improve and survive if "both" partners end up adjusting things anyway, but you can still triumph yourself no matter if the rescue is possible or not.

5 out of 5 stars Growing Together.......2007-05-09

Keep your relationship alive and well with the advice in this book. You'll learn how to nurture each other and your relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Great Response Time.......2007-04-01

The book was in great condition and the response time was quick. I appreciate that as every day that goes by was significant in my relationship that needs rescuing!!!

Book Description

What do employees and coworkers have in common with a five-ton killer whale? A whole lot more than you think, according to the mega-bestselling author Ken Blanchard and his coauthors from SeaWorld. Whales respond best to positive reinforcement. So do humans. In this moving and inspirational new audiobook, Blanchard explains how using the techniques of animal trainers -- specifically those responsible for the killer whales of SeaWorld -- can supercharge your effectiveness at work and at home.

When gruff business manager and family man Wes Kingsley visited SeaWorld, he marveled at the ability of the trainers to lead huge killer whales in performing acrobatic leaps and dives. Later, talking to the chief trainer, he learned their techniques of building trust, accentuating the positive, and redirecting negative behavior -- all of which make these extraordinary performances possible. Kingsley took a hard look at his own often accusatory management style and recognized how some of his shortcomings as a manager, spouse, and father actually diminish trust and damage relationships. He began to see the difference between "GOTcha" (catching people doing things wrong) and "Whale Done!" (catching people doing things right).

In Whale Done!, Ken Blanchard shows how positive reinforcement and redirection can help increase productivity. These techniques are remarkably easy to master and can be applied equally well at home, allowing listeners to become better parents and more committed spouses and have happier personal lives.

3 out of 5 stars Quality content spoiled by poor presentation.......2007-09-07

Let's break the book down into two halves: the message and the writing. The message is great, and genuinely insightful, particularly in some of the subtleties of how one builds a positive relationship (rewarding progress, rather than just acheivement) and smart ways to do rewards.

The writing, though, is a different story. Like so many management books often do, it tries to reveal this information as a parable, by telling you the story of foul-mannered Wes Kingsley finding his guru at SeaWorld. The writing is unabashedly corny, and tiring, particularly with its relentless use of GOTcha (sic) and WHALE DONE (sic). I have found that I can relate the entire useful content of the book in a 5-10 minute conversation, and so, that makes the actual size of the book seem unnecessary. The upside is that print is large, and the writing is breezy, and the book reads very quickly. Think of it as the Cheerios of books: bland but easily digested.

Having read much stronger books that use this sort of presentation (Goldratt's "The Goal" comes to mind) I would not readily recommend this book, except that the concepts contained within are original, and useful. I think that there are other concepts from animal training that could have been integrated to improve the book, but as it stands, it is a tolerable and useful read. An abridged version with less of the overwrought story would be a very strong work.

5 out of 5 stars Whale Done.......2007-05-31

Have you actually wondered how they get those huge whales to jump out of the water at Sea World or Marine Land? This book can be used to train animals, family, workers in how to use positive praise to get what you want. It's not a gimmick, but giving praise to encourage better performance and not just when a good performance is seen but a way of life, a value system. A great book!!

5 out of 5 stars Learn To Build Others Up.......2007-05-09

Orlando Sea World's killer whales are a source of inspiration in this book, which seeks to help you build up your relationships.

4 out of 5 stars A Whale's Motivation.......2007-04-03

Most of us read anecdotes and examples about how people, who are paragon of virtues, perform to meet other people's expectations and go beyond it. This gives us hope and inspiration. What I found interesting about this book was that the inspiration came from an unlikely source - the killer whales of the Orlando SeaWorld.

The key concept being that the more attention you pay to a behavior, the more it will be repeated. Another concept the book emphasized was of re-channeling energies on the positive and away from the negative. Redirection is the most effective way to address undesirable behavior. It gets a person back on track almost immediately and works in ninety-nine percent of the cases where we might be tempted to use a Negative Response. I find more resonance with this quote after reading this book - "If you give as much energies to you dreams as you do to your fears, miracles start to happen".

5 out of 5 stars Whale Done is an understatement!.......2007-02-06

This book was a fast and easy read...it was over before I knew it! My boss has started a book a month club for us and this was one of the required reading. At first I was reluctant because I thought it might be boring but I was severely mistaken in that assumption. We have begun applying the positive relationship building in our office and this method described in the text can be applied at home and in every day encounters with people as well. I can really see a difference in my co-workers as well as in my children and just the people I run into each day. For example: I go to Starbucks every morning for my weekly Frappuccino treat and they know me by name. Today I ran into one of the elderly employees there and she was frustrated because she was having trouble getting the new cash register to read her fingerprint to sign in and she could not remember how to make my drink. I simply explained that when she made the drink I knew it would be extra delicious because I was made to wait and would enjoy it more and that I really was not in any big hurry, my work would understand (we are after all focusing on the positive now. :-)). She relaxed, remembered how to prepare the drink and was able to summon another employee to help her sign into her register. She was suddenly smiling and seemed to be much happier. Rather than focusing on the negative setbacks I redirected her to the positive and you could see the difference it made in her over all performance as well as the beginning of her morning. :-) Whale done is awesome! I would recommend it to anyone wishing to put a more positive spin on life!

Book Description

Babies need it, parents want it-- the call for a good night's sleep has parents everywhere looking for a solution like this: an easy-to-follow plan from a renowned baby sleep specialist that delivers on the promise of its title.

There is no bigger issue for healthy infants than sleeping through the night. In this simple, straightforward book, Suzy Giordano presents her amazingly effective "Limited- Crying Solution" that will get any baby to sleep for twelve hours at night—and three hours in the day—by the age of twelve weeks old.

Giordano is the mother of five children and one of the most sought-after baby sleep specialists in the country. The Washington Post calls her a baby sleep "guru" and "an underground legend in the Washington area for her ability to teach newborns how to achieve that parenting nirvana: sleeping through the night." Her sleep plan has been tested with singletons, twins, triplets, babies with special needs, and colicky babies—and it has never failed.

Whether you are pregnant, first-time parents, or parents who seek a different path with your second or third child, anyone can benefit from the Baby Coach's popular system of regular feeding times, twelve hours of sleep at night and three hours of sleep during the day, and the peace of mind that comes with taking the parent and child out of a sleep- deprived world.

5 out of 5 stars It REALLY works!.......2007-09-21

My son was 4 months old and still getting up 2-3 times a night. I read this book (during his nap) and started trying it the next day. I switched to the 4 hour feeding schedule and within a week, my son was sleeping through the night (I'm talking 10-12 hours)! I got this because of recommendations from other moms and they were right! It took us a couple of days to get to the 4 hour feedings, but it was worth it. This is NOT a cry-it-out book either. I have about 10 books on sleep and this is the only one that has worked for me.

5 out of 5 stars You need this book.......2007-09-06

This book is geared towards multiples, so when we used the method on our singleton it only took about 7 weeks to get her sleeping 12 hours a night. It's not just night time sleep though that makes our lives easier, she teaches you how to get your baby on a daytime schedule too. Imagine how easy our lives are knowing when our baby will be tired and hungry. She's the happiest baby I know. We don't even follow half of Susie's instructions and our little one is on a perfect yet flexible schedule. I buy it for every pregnant person I know now!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous and a Quick Read.......2007-08-30

This book was recommended to my husband by a coworker. I read it in less than an hour and began implementing the techniques right away, my son was 7 weeks old at the time. By the time he was 9 weeks old he was sleeping through the night for 12 hours and not getting up for any feedings. We had to travel out of town for a wedding at around 9 weeks and the change in setting did not alter his great sleeping or feeding schedule. The author makes it very straightforward and understandable without a lot of the science of sleep babble. It was wonderful for us to be on a schedule so we could plan our days (and nights). My son is now almost 14 months old and still sleeps through the night for 12 hours and takes 2 long regular naps during the day. He goes right down, no crying or fussing and he goes down perfectly regardless of if I put him down, a sitter or grandparents.
People have complimented us on how easy going and happy our son is and I certainly believe a lot of it has to do with the fact that he got enough sleep & food right from the get go and still has good sleeping habits.

4 out of 5 stars It works great as a "guide".......2007-08-13

While I think my daughter was naturally a good sleeper, I took the suggestions in this book and used them as a guide for getting her to sleep through the night. Her suggestions make sense, we eat all the nourishment we need during the day, so you just work toward that goal for your baby. My daughter is 7 weeks old and has been sleeping throug the night from 9pm-7am since she was 5 weeks old. Now, some of the suggestions are a little over the top--like not going anywhere for the first 6 months to "mold" your child. I don't want my daughter to only be able to sleep in her crib, I want to go to a friends house for a BBQ and put her down in a pack n play! Also, there's no way you can do this and breastfeed. I pumped and used a combination of formula and breastmilk which worked fine, but I don't beleive it would have worked for me if I was nursing.

So, I believe if you use her suggestions as a "guide" and don't follow it to the letter it can definitely work! I've been very happy with my daughters success, and it has helped me regain my sanity!

5 out of 5 stars Good advice that works.......2007-08-07

Don't worry so much about pumping and measuring. This can work if you're breastfeeding. Trust your baby to tell you when they're full and when they're hungry. The important part is that you start to stretch out the time between feeding to give your child enough time to get hungry and eat a full meal.

Book Description

Nationally recognized expert Robert Emery applies his twenty-five years of experience as a researcher, therapist, and mediator to offer parents a new road map to divorce. Dr. Emery shows how our powerful emotions and the way we handle them shape how we divorce—and whether our children suffer or thrive in the long run. His message is hopeful, yet realistic—divorce is invariably painful, but parents can help promote their children's resilience. With compassion and authority, Dr. Emery explains: • Why it is so hard to really make divorce work
• How anger and fighting can keep people from really separating
• Why legal matters should be one of the last tasks
• Why parental love—and limit setting—can be the best “therapy” for kids
• How to talk to children, create workable parenting schedules, and more

“Finally, an internationally respected scholar tells parents the absolute truth about divorce and its effect on children.”
—John Gottman, PhD, author of The Heart of Parenting: Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child

This is a somewhat positive outlook on divorce through the eyes of a professional who considers the children first. He offers practical, helpful advice for setting up things like visition based on the particular aspects of a divorce.

I used this book and several others in a talk given to grandparents of children who are coping with "Divorce". This book was helpful not only in helping the children, but, it was helpful to the parents and grandparents.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I Had Bought Two.......2007-01-10

If you are contemplating a divorce or in divorce proceedings or even divorced and if you care for your children, read this book. Not only did Dr. Emery open my eyes to what my children have esperienced and will experince from divorce but also what both their parents are experiencing. Dr. Emery's insights are both personal and clinical and his guidance always puts the children first. This book is written in a very clear and straight forward style. You won't get lost in complicated psycological explanations or depressed from a gloomy outlook for your children like many of the other books on this subject. Buy two! One for each parent.

5 out of 5 stars I am a divorce lawyer and I buy this to give to my clients.......2007-01-05

I heard of Dr. Emery from several child development specialists I met at a seminar. They consider him to be the current expert. I bought several volumes (at full price) to give to my clients who were contemplating divorce and wanted to know what was best for their children.

My clients have raved about the book. They quote it to me, highlight sections and bring in the book with lots of bookmarks. The advice is practical and helps the clients focus on the important issues. I work with people on cooperative divorce (see divorcewithoutwar.info) and this information helps me accomplish our goal of working for the best interests of the children and keeping the divorce process civil.

I recomend this book to any one with children who is contemplating a divorce. It will really help them make good decisions and hopefully make the entire process less stressful.

5 out of 5 stars Divorce.......2006-11-10

This book has been very helpful in veiwing things form a child's side of things. It has helped put some of my emotions aside to do what is best for my children.

Sure this book set me into tears quite a few times but that is because I swear it was written about me! Finally someone, a man at that, who totally understands and can explain how women and men feel about sex and relationships. It's brutally honest but you will feel better about yourself and the choices you've made by the end of the book. The "other" book shoots down your self confidence and this one boosts it. A wonderful must read for single girls.

Kerner's book has a lot going for it - it's funny, it provides a man's point of view, and has some good information about sex and male/female differences. As you read the book, you grow to like Kerner a little. And the professed theme of the book, which advises women to stop settling and to wait for the real thing, is a REALLY important message that more women's books need to focus on.

On the downside, I had a hard time getting clear on what exactly Kerner's point was. He seemed to tell women to not settle, but then talked quite a bit about sex (he's a sex therapist) and provided a chapter written by his wife about meeting him. The book seemed to give you an overview and make you laugh, rather than really dive into the more meaty topic of raising your standards.

Overall, a decent book and worth a read. But not a classic.

Book Description

A frank and spicy guide to finding deeper sexual satisfaction-written by a media-friendly author and sex columnist

Since the hardcover publication of What Your Mother Never Told You About Sex (Putnam, 2002), Dr. Hilda Hutcherson has reached millions of women through her two appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, her popular monthly columns in Glamour and Essence, and other media exposure-in addition to book sales of more than 70,000 copies in hardcover and trade paperback combined. Now Dr. Hilda has written what she calls "a sexier sex book"-an accessible, tell-it-like-it-is guide that goes beyond the basics to answer the questions women across the country are asking-about overcoming anxiety and insecurities in bed, trying new sex positions (and diplomatically retiring some old ones), spicing things up with games, toys, and fantasies, and more. Written in the tone of a supportive and savvy friend who just happens to be a top sex expert, and featuring fifty instructive illustrations, Pleasure covers:

- redefining pleasure: why the quest for female orgasms is overhyped-and how to relax and truly enjoy sex, with or without them;
- exploring the female body's pleasure zones;
- communicating with a partner about what feels good (and what doesn't);
- Sex Positions 101 . . . and 201; and a lifetime of pleasure: great sex after pregnancy, after fifty, and beyond.

Encouraging, empowering, and an entertaining read, Pleasure is the ultimate guide for any woman who wants to break out of old inhibitions and more fully enjoy her sex life, whether she's in a budding new relationship or a long-term marriage that's already stood the test of time.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasure: A Woman's Guide to Getting the Sex You Want, Need, and Deserve.......2007-06-08

I think that for all of the women brought up to believe the "sex" topic to be taboo. Dr. Hutcherson provides us with a valuable tool for information.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Map for Sexual Intimacy and Fulfillment.......2006-03-17

In "Pleasure", Dr. Hilda Hutcherson approaches the topic of female sexuality from a lighter, more personal and fun-friendly perspective than she did in "What Your Mother Never Told You about S-E-X". In "S-E-X", the reader is like a new patient engaging in a reassuring and open conversation with her well-chosen and nurturing gynecologist. By the time we get to "Pleasure" the doctor-patient relationship has grown significantly more personal and trusting, and the topics addressed take on a whole new level of intimacy.

"Dr. Hil" is to women and sex what "Dr. Phil" is to relationships. "Pleasure" is filled with emotionally supportive and detailed advice. The numerous illustrations are sensually tasteful and instructive. This is the perfect book for anyone who seeks to improve her sexual happiness, but is put off by the often cheesy plethora of `hot sex' guides on the market today.

"Pleasure" frees the reader to feel good about herself, discover her own unique style of `sexy' and explore both physically and psychologically what uniquely rocks her boat. (Sections of chapter 5 can stand alone as a manual for any man interested in obtaining the ultimate step by step exploratory guide on giving pleasure). We also learn that orgasm is just one of many sources of pleasure, and not the be-all end-all win or lose aspect of a woman's sexual enjoyment.

The book covers a range of topics, including self-care (emotionally, spiritually, psychologically and physically), personal pleasure centers (through step-by-step physical exploration, either alone or with your partner), sex-act education (both basic and advanced), sexual enhancements (toys, exercisers, sensual products, fantasies and games) and last, but not least, how to maintain a satisfying sex life through oft-times frustrating life changes.

We learn that there is much more to "sexy" than what we have been commonly misled to believe; Dr. Hutcherson shares with each reader the key to unlock that special pleasure-seeking energy within herself and exude her uniquely alluring `check-me-out' energy to the world. "Pleasure" is for anyone who is less than thrilled with her sexual status quo and seeks expert advice on how to obtain the sexual fulfillment she deserves.
