4 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Story of the Value of Friendship .......2006-12-31

Between Friends is the story of 2 girls that became friends at the age of 5 and remained best friends all their lives. The entire book was written in the format of letters, journal entries, and newspaper clippings. It was a strange format, and yet it seemed to give us a deeper glimpse into the lives of these 2 very different women.

Lesley grew up the oldest of 6 kids in a working class family. Her dad spent more time out of work than he did employeed, and her mom had to learn to live with him and all his faults. Jillian, the only child of Judge and his wife, grew up in the lap of luxary. And yet, through time and completely different circumstances, they stayed friends. This book encompasses decades in the lives of the 2 friends, through marriage, children, divorce, death and war. At times a little sappy and at times very touching, I found this book very enjoyable.

My cousin showed me this book last summer. Though many people would say this is for old adults, It is my favorite book as a teenager. The heartwarming tales, and the tears strolling down your face you will really appreciate what you have in life. Read Between Friends, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story! A Quick Read Despite the Unusual Format...... .......2006-04-07

I normally do not read the genre that Debbie Macomber dominates, but I 'discovered' her wonderful stories, good writing, and always interesting 3 diminsional characters. And, I became hooked on Macomber, especially her Cedar Cove series.
Between Friends is a wonderful story that kept me turning the pages long after bed-time. Beautiful Jillian and Smart Lesley are as opposite as can be, and that's exactly why become and stay best friends throughout their life. Diary Excepts, Newspaper clippings, letters, as well as 'real time' scenes propel the reader forward at amazing speed with tremdous concern for the girls, who blossom into young women, mothers, and finally to professional middle aged women.
Problems, Very Big and small, do not exist exclusively in the poor side of town as Jillian and Lesley reveal their stories to us readers and to each other. Their laughter, tears, heartaches, joys, triumps, defeats become ours from the first page to the last satisfying page.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My New Favorite Books!!!.......2005-07-15

I loved this book! I loved everything about it, the format, the women, the secondary characters, all of it. This is Jillian and Lesley's story about friendship and changing times. Formatted as diary/journal entries, notes, letters, newspaper clippings, and e-mails, we see these two women from the time they were born (1948), all through their school days, marriages, wars, children, lost loves, acts of terrorism, and medical scares.

Though they are both so different (Jillian's family is very wealthy, while Lesley's is just the opposite) they manage to always be their for one another. Even after Jillian moves from Washington State to New York for school, and eventually her job.

Lesley got pregnant and married young (to a dead-beat lowlife) and never left their little town, while Jillian was off to the city for school and big dreams. There was not a part of this book I didn't like. I read it every chance I could get, and now that I'm finished, I'm mailing it to my best friend back home. I definitely recommend this book for women, and I can't wait to read more from Ms. Macomber!

John Paul II has made greater strides toward understanding and atoning for Rome's complicity in anti-Semitism than any other pope in history. The Hidden Pope shows how and why this rapprochement is taking place by telling the story of John Paul's lifelong friendship with Jerzy Kluger, a Polish Jew. The text is a fascinating and detailed depiction of John Paul's personal life, but the book's real significance lies in its frank demonstration of the way Karol Wojtyla brings his personal experience to bear on the eternal truths of Catholic theology.

This book was so touching that I beg both Catholics and Jews to read it and meditate on the message. I laughed and cried. It is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Story of Friendship.......2005-05-12

I bought this book a few years ago. The recent death of Pope John Paul II inspired me to take it off the bookshelf and start reading one night. If you are a gentile and think you know the meaning and impact of anti-semitism, think again and read this book. This is the history of 20th century Europe told through the lives and experiences of Lolek and Jerzy, two precocious small town Polish friends whose friendship helped change the course Catholic-Jewish relations after twenty centuries of misunderstanding and mistrust. It was providential that both ended up residing in Rome and worked together to change the perceptions of many people who have adopted anti-semetic attitudes based upon false assumptions and lies. Through their eyes see the horrors of Nazism and Communism as their friends and families are slaughtered by these inhumane political systems. By the end of the book you will feel like you know these two men (Pope John Paul II and Jerzey Kluger) as very very special human beings. It may be profane but they remind me of Pat O'Brien and James Cagney combination in the movie, "Angels with Dirty Faces." One, the saintly but very world wise priest and the other, a wise cracking but trouble prone friend. These two men teach us that at a personal level Jews and Christians are cousins in faith and these ancient misunderstandings should be resolved once and forever. The Hidden Pope would make a wonderful movie about two mensches for the ages!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2005-04-19

I am an Irish Catholic that married a Jewish girl with roots in Poland, so this book took on special meaning for me. I was very proud of our pontiff for making extraordinary strides in Catholic-Jewish relations. His message still hasn't made it down to all levels of the church, but I hope that it will. Many Catholics still feel that Jews are doomed and must be converted/baptized in order to be saved, but the Pope clearly states that this is WRONG. We are all sons of Abraham, and the Jews are our older brothers.

I would like to write to Jurek Kluger and tell him so. If anyone knows his address or email, please forward it to me. Thank you!!

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2001-01-20

This is a fabulous book. I am neither Catholic nor Jewish, but I was fascinated by the depth of the man we all call Pope. I had no idea of his personal journey, and the breadth of his goodness. Too many times, we don't look beyond the title and the robes. This is truly a saintly man.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Jewish readers.......2000-01-27

This book gives an eye opening view of the current Pope. It shows how his upbringing in Poland led him to have his feelings of friendship with the Jewish people. He is presented as a true "tzadik". The book also briefly relates on how the works of Pope John XXIII and Cardinals Willebrands, O'Connor and Spellman have brought about a better understanding of Judaism in the Church. If their messages could only filter down to the populace...

I say that because in reading and understanding the husband/wife authors, you will become humble and start looking for opportunities to become more of a soulmate to your lover or friend. I agree that a person can indeed become jaded or exasperated with the "games" that men and women play on each other! Sometimes a person wonders how did their parents or grandparents ever get together! This book was one of the FIRST of the truly HELPFUL books in the Iyanla Vanzant, Maya Angelou, Dr. Ron Elmore tradition! This one has the benefit of a very intuitive and intelligent husband and wife team aiding you in the process ! A very good investment. May the reading and applying of the information bring about a healing and lifetime love for you! Peace -ed-

    Book Description

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle believed with the utmost sincerity in the validity of Spiritualism and became one of its most fervent propagandists. Harry Houdini was a skeptic and became, in Conan Doyle's words, "the greatest medium-baiter of modern times." FINAL SEANCE is the fascinating story of their five-year friendship, years that were filled with exciting adventures, paranormal investigations, and confrontations among the "spirits."

3 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Subject, but Less Letter is Better.......2007-08-15

The friendship between Houdini and Conan Doyle was truly a strange one. The first man made his living at deception, yet spear-headed a crusade to unmask other deceivers. The second man is famous for the logical-minded, methodical, and observant character he created, but as for himself, he must have been the most gullible man alive. Conan Doyle actually believed that Houdini had the power to dematerialize and was even fooled by the rather infantile finger trick -- by which a person "disconnects" the forefinger up to the first joint.

Although the topic is fascinating, sadly, the letters of Houdini and Conan Doyle are tedious and wordy. I found myself endlessly skimming them in order to return to the next seance or the next significant event.

Still, I found all the accounts of mediums and their spiritualistic shenanigans mysterious, in spite of Houdini's repeated attempts to discredit them. Some of the explanations presented by the author Polidoro are so complicated and unwieldy, it would be easier to believe in the spirits! Is it really possible to swallow a roll of gauze and regurgitate it later as "ectoplasm?" Could a man really surgically alter his wife so that she could smuggle items into a seance? (Shudder.)

Worth reading for those fascinated with the topic (like me), but we could wish that the two principal subjects had been a little less tedious in their correspondence -- or that Polidoro had just summarized more often!

4 out of 5 stars The Skeptic vs. the Believer .......2005-11-23

Final Séance is a strange book about two strange individuals who strangely enough became involved in a strange friendship:

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Creator of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, internationally known author and believer in Spiritualism, who chose to believe in more or less any medium he encountered, as long as the messages received confirmed his preconceived ideas.

Harry Houdini - The world's greatest escapologist, acclaimed magician and illusionist who never said his performances had anything but natural explanations, and over the years one of the foremost debunkers of many alleged occult matters.

Or in other words, the skeptic vs. the believer. Could these two gentlemen really be friends? Absolutely, and good ones, too. Massimo Polidoro of the Italian Committee for the Investigation of the Paranormal has written a book where he tells the stories of how they met, why they met, how their friendship evolved over the years yet ultimately came to a tragic end.

Their friendship was quite unorthodox: Doyle the believer in everything and Houdini the believer in nothing (though he said himself if was willing to believe were solid evidence ever to be shown to him). Fine, but is it interesting to read a book about a friendship, unusual as it may have been, and furthermore, a book that is mostly based on surviving letters between the two? For sure, because Final Séance is more than just a book about their friendship. It's actually a whole lot more.

First of all, it offers a good description of how Spiritualism evolved in Great Britain and North America at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. People everywhere became convinced that communication with the dead was indeed possible, and in dark rooms on both sides of the Atlantic different mediums claimed to be able to make contact with the ones who had passed on. The fact that mediums on a regularly basis were exposed as frauds never dampened the spirit (no pun intended), and that alone is an interesting cultural phenomenon well worth investigating.

Secondly, one cannot avoid being fascinated about the fact that two so very different people were able to ever be friends, when one of them believed wholeheartedly in what the other one rejected passionately. Humbleness and tolerance were the key ingredients, and the elegant use of the English language they both used in their letters truly is a joy to experience.

Furthermore, many of the ideas that evolved during these years are still with us today, and thus the book is useful to anyone interested in the historical background to what today is known as New Age.

However, the main focus is on the friendship, and because of this the book is merely complementary to the history of the New Age and the growth of Spiritualism. But if you're interested in reading about two fascinating human beings and at the same time have a reminder that different beliefs don't necessary equal discord, then Final Séance is well worth looking into.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book for more than just Houdini - Conan Doyle fans.......2005-07-12

I was so fascinated by this book that I read it in one evening. In a narrow sense, the topic is the discussion/debate between Houdini and Conan Doyle about spiritualism that first made them friends and then opponents. In a larger sense, I think that it has a great deal to say about the human mind and deserves a wide audience. It is an excellent example of how hard it is to consider objectively such subjects in which people invest so much emotion. Conan Doyle was so determined to believe that Houdini was a psychic that nothing Houdini said could deter him.

I have thought for a long time about the issue of trust and credibility. If I would believe someone if they told me that they just saw the bus go by, why don't I necessarily believe them if they tell me that they spoke to a spirit, or god, etc. As this book illustrates, these are issues which have historically involved some much delusion and deception that it is important to proceed with caution. (Of course, it would help if all prophets said the same thing.) I know that I will be thinking about it and quoting it to people for quite a while.

Polidoro is clearly on the side of the skeptics, and makes his affiliations clear up front. He remains, however, sympathetic to Conan Doyle and clearly admires the latter's kindness, intelligence and generally amiable and honorable character. Although he sides intellectually with Houdini, he doesn't attempt to cover his arrogance and boasting.

Recommended to everyone, except perhaps, convinced spiritualists, although even they might find it a useful cautionary tale, if not a convincing argument.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but dry.......2005-02-23

This book was very interesting, but it made for dry reading. Certainly not a page-turner. If you can get through the first half of the book, it gets more interesting toward the end.

In addition, the author did not impress me as being an impartial source. It was clear that he agreed with Houdini from the start and he set out to make Conan Doyle look as ridiculous as possible. Perhaps Conan Doyle really was that foolish, but the author was too biased for me to take his word for it.

    2 out of 5 stars Couldn't stay awake.......2005-02-23

It was written in the style of Dracula with alot of correspondence. The auther was also very biased towards Houdini. It was not very objective.

    3 out of 5 stars Mostly T&A.......2006-11-08

My book oddly enough looks different. Its all pink and different picture. Better in my opinion. Anyhow, as far as the book... well it is lacking terribly. I am a stickler about love stories (especially lesbian and sometimes gay ones.) But mostly every story in this is just a 1,2,3 kick formula. Girl Meets Girl. Girls realise they are lesbians. Girls do it. Move on to next chapter. That's it basically. There are a few stories that are pretty good, but nothing on the tier of the ones i've read in love shook my heart. Even on the t&a department its pretty bland.

Basically it just wasn't what i was looking for. I wanted something that was sweet, loving, and maybe a little kinky at the right spots. not just something that says, "I'm a feminist now give me nipple!" There are a few nice stories in this. It's barely worth buying. But be prepared to do a lot of skimming. Also my biggest problem about series like this is that well... if you really like one... you only get a taste. but o well.

4 out of 5 stars Reassuring - but not for bisexual women!.......2005-06-27

As a straight woman - who also happens to be bisexual - I was anxiously looking forward to sampling this book's contents. I was drawn by the title, "My Lover, My Friend" which rekindled for me memories of my own experiences.

As someone who has also struggled to resolve my own same-sex yearnings, I was looking forward to reading about other women's journeys - to see if any of them had taken paths similar to my own. I suppose I was also seeking some reassurances as to the choices I had made. And, in my wildest dreams, I was hoping that the book might offer some advice for me and other women - such as how to balance our enjoyment of women with other aspects of our normal heterosexual lives.

As background, this book is a series of first person accounts by women who eventually find companionship with a close female friend. As such, this message flies in the face of conventional wisdom which warns us that "love ruins friendships." And in the case of woman-to-woman intimacy, I would think that the potential for irreparably harming one's friendships is even greater.

In my own case, after fruitlessly exploring other avenues, I eventually found success when I violated this same tenet - and started to view my friends (some of whom were my closest) as possible lovers. To say that this took a while to pull off would be an understatement. But afterwards, not only did I not lose my dearest soul mates - our friendships are now much stronger than ever before!

I guess I didn't realize it when I selected it, but this book is mainly about women who are lesbians. Even so, I was surprised to discover how much different it means to be bisexual - and how so little of this book proved useful to me.

Although the erotic portions of the stories were tastefully written and mildly arousing, the life situations of the authors had a remarkable sameness - which made the outcomes almost painfully predictable. Most of the subjects lived in - or near the fringes - of the lesbian community. Some of the women weren't lesbians to begin with (and several had been previously married). But almost all of the friends (or best friends) who assisted each woman in her transition - were already lesbians! (Hey, where's the surprise or discovery in that?)

Besides the seemingly preordained nature of each story's outcome, there also seemed to be an underlying (monochromatic) message saying that once you sleep with a women - that you eventually need to marry her (or at least commit yourself exclusively to her).

I found myself admiring those individuals who managed to find true love with someone of the same sex - and who then had the conviction to pursue a relationship with them for numerous years. But sexuality for me (and my friends) isn't nearly so black and white.

For me, being bisexual means that I acknowledge the strong attraction I have for other women. But that doesn't mean that I want to give up my traditional heterosexual life -- in order to fulfill it!

In all fairness, this book is probably very reassuring to those women who want to become lesbians.

But for those like me who want to satisfy that same-sex hunger -- while not being totally consumed by it - this book, unfortunately, was not very helpful.

Beginning with the "Vive la peinture! [Long live painting!]" that Matisse writes to Bonnard, this little volume of correspondence between two artists and friends reveals a common vision about aesthetics and renders their personal and artistic struggles and triumphs. The book includes 23 black-and-white illustrations (including photos taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson) depicting the artists at work and at home, as well as facsimiles of their handwritten correspondence--something to savor in this day of answering machines and electronic mail.

      4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2003-03-08

It's a good book to read and enjoy. Has good recipes too...

4 out of 5 stars A good value for the price, but I liked other books better.......2000-07-06

This book contains 4 suggested menus, 7 pages of history and customs, and 5 pages of quotes about tea.

      teas & beverages: 11 recipes / breads & spreads: 16 recipes / light servings: 13 recipes / sweets: 11 recipes

The recipes are easy, some as simple as "Marinate fresh mushrooms in Italian dressing" if you don't have time to make their marinade.

It's an attractive book with delicate watercolors on every page. If you only want one book of tea-type recipes, I prefer "The Book of Afternoon Tea" by Lesley Mackley or "Totally Teatime Cookbook" by Helene Siegel.

      5 out of 5 stars nice..........2000-05-19

This is a great book with a lot of helpful recipies. I enjoy it immensly.

5 out of 5 stars Treasure to keep or give!.......2000-05-18

This is a great little book... It includes the history ofteas, the tea ceremony and all of the related customs.

All of thepages in the book are watercolors done by one of the three collaborators, almost each page is different and just beautiful to look at.

After looking at the pretty pages you are encouraged to plan your own special "TEA" event. Included are four suggested menus; Winter Holiday Tea, Summer Tea, Formal Tea and Informal Tea. Each menu is complete and lists five to eight items. All of the recipes are included, even the obvious simple basic ones that most of us already know about. The recipes are simple and elegant, all seem fabulous and easy to make with ingredients most of us already have in our pantries.

The book is a collaboration of three women who are lifelong friends. One watercolors and hand letters the calligraphy, another is responsible for the watercolor vignettes and the third is the writer.

      1 out of 5 stars poor translation.......2001-11-06

The letters are amazingly interesting if you are fluent in Spanish. However, the translations into English are literal and are unbelievable poor and almost humorous. The premise for the book is a good one, though it would have been much more meaningful had the translations been more accurate. I'd recommend it if you're bilingual and recommend you to skip it if you're not.

      5 out of 5 stars 'Fine Realities.'.......2005-08-30

Harry Torczyner was Magritte's New York-based attorney, friend, and stateside promoter. Up until Magritte's unexpected death in 1967, Torczyner kept every letter that they exchanged (including replicas of his own responses) during their ten year correspondence. For this, readers should be exceptionally thankful: the letters turn out to be a brilliant and insightful collection.

Photographs, handwritten excerpts, and Magritte's working sketches are also interspersed throughout the anthology. Accompanying each letter is a French translation -- the language in which they were originally written -- and exact dates of composition are meticulously recorded. The highlights, of course, are Magritte's letters themselves, with his candid descriptions of inspiration, roadblocks, the creative process, and revelations about his own art and that of his contemporaries.

      Not to be missed.
