Ann Brashares has created a wonderful, heartfelt series for teens (and adults) around a pair of pants. In her breakout bestseller, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Brashares introduced readers to four girls, Lena, Bridget, Carmen, and Tibby, and to the magical pair of jeans that fit them all perfectly, and inspired them to live their young lives to the fullest. Forever in Blue, the fourth and final novel in the series, promises a dazzling finale--one "last glorious summer" for the four girls, and their fans. See a note from author Ann Brashares, below.--Daphne Durham

A Note from Ann Brashares

December 1, 2006

Dear Amazon Reader,

Well, here we are together again. If you are getting ready to read the fourth book, Forever in Blue, that means we've probably spent some time together. I hope you've enjoyed it. I know I have.

We don't know each other and we may never get to meet, but I feel like we are connected nonetheless. We've spent time with four fictional girls together. We've puzzled over their lives and their choices. We've rooted for them and sometimes felt annoyed by them. We've shared some hopes for them, I think, and in the process for ourselves.

So thank you for being part of the sisterhood with me. I have really appreciated your company along the way.

Happy reading,

Ann

3 out of 5 stars I liked the others better.......2007-08-10

This was the book made to tie up loose ends. Everyone came to a conclusion about their life and the pants. The whole thing was sort of boring. Yes I liked the book, but in a way everyone was the same as they started. I suppose the point of it was to show how they had grown up and still stayed the same. Maybe it was that there wasn't enough excitement or maybe it's that I'm tired now but i thought it wasn't as good as the other books.

5 out of 5 stars Sisterhood.......2007-08-04

I have enjoyed this entire series...takes me back to my Judy Blume days. The girl in all of us can identify with these characters as they grow, change, and try to not lose themselves or each other in the process. The earlier on you learn that nothing means more than your girl friends...the better off you are! I think the quotes between the chapters are insightful, and I enjoy finding their relation to the story as I read on. That brings a literary aspect not often found in young adult novels. I appreciate that this book and its prequels can be light and real at the same time. A book about pants sounds like fluff, but you feel with these girls as they deal with real issues both internal and external. Real doesn't have to be dark...bittersweet seems more fitting. These books capture the laughter through tears that is what sisterhood is about. I highly recommend reading them all.

4 out of 5 stars So Long Sisterhood.......2007-07-26

Although this wasn't my fave Sisterhood book, it deserves kudos for not only reflecting the maturity of the characters at this point in their lives, but also the realities of growing up and growing apart. This is the fourth and supposedly final chapter of the Sisterhood tomes, and is likely to provide a conclusive feeling for the readers of the series.

To recap, the Travelling Pants series details the summers four best friends spend, sometimes apart, sometimes together. They are of course, as per the legend, bonded together by a pair of 'magical' pants that give them the strength of the love they feel as friends even when they aren't together.

In all fairness I read the third book quite some time ago so reading the new fourth one was a bit of a cognitive leap - I could barely remember a lot of what happened in the past! Anyway in this one the girls are bridging the gap between their first and second year of university. They've actually shared the pants year-round this time because they have spent the year at different colleges etc. That should be your first clue something is up - the girls are very very much so a lot more individual characters this time around, which was both refreshing and problematic. Of the latter, it was good because I was sick and tired of how cheesy and overemphasized their relationship was - although some sappy moments still exist towards the end, they are certainly toned down. But in the absence of their friendship it almost defeated the purpose of the book, and the pants of course.

This time around the girls spend most of their summer apart. Tibby is still in New York working and taking a summer class and wondering whether she has made the right choices when it comes to her relationship with Brian. Bee (my fave as always) is in Turkey getting back to basics on an archeological dig site and wondering whether the best alternative to missing her boyfriend is not missing a single thing her hot professor does. Flamboyent Carmen has surprisingly shrunk into her shell over the last year, and fallen under the wing of a supposedly protective, glorious friend, who turns out to be anything but as their summer continues. Lena is at art school and enraptured with a guy, shockingly this time, not the love of her life, Kostos.

As I mentioned earlier, the book definitely took on a more mature tone than the others - most of it dealt with sex and relationships and very little of it focused on friendship and personal self-growth - although most of the storylines evolve to give the girls those girl power moments of epiphany. Although I enjoyed the storylines a lot more this time it almost felt like the characters were under-used and less developed because there was far less crossover opportunities given their summer was spent so far apart emotionally and physically.

Brashares does a good job wrapping up the series in a realistic way though - Upon finishing it, I realized why she decided to do a fourth (I completely assumed the third would be the last) as each book is kind of meant to represent each of the four girls.

All in all a fitting conclusion to the series that represented, quite honestly, the realities of growing up and moving away when it comes to those true blue friends you thought you'd never forget, and those true blue jeans you thought you'd never lose.

5 out of 5 stars Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants).......2007-07-19

OMG!!! I loved every single one of the books preceding this book and this one hit the mark! It is so wonderful, and though it is so sad that it ends the series the finish is remarkable. Brashare's masterpiece is complete!!!

2 out of 5 stars One too many.......2007-07-15

I thought the prime qualities of the first three books of this series were charm and innocence. For the fourth installment, one of our heroines poses nude for a male art student and another falls for a married man with children. Whatever other qualities the book may have, charming and innocent it is not.

4 out of 5 stars "Forever Blue" will be forever in your heart!.......2006-08-23

SEAL executive officer Carter "Blue" McCoy is on leave to attend the wedding of his step brother Gerry in Hatboro, South Carolina. The town is anticipating his arrival because Gerry is marrying Blue's former girlfriend, Jenny Lee. But no one is as excited about his arrival as Lucy Tait. A rookie officer with the Hatboro PD, Lucy remembers Blue fondly as the guy who rescued her from bullies back when they were teens.

While trying to break up a fight, it is Blue who subdues the baddies, again rescuing Lucy. Suddenly she is on the receiving end of his smoldering eyes, and when he asks her to attend the engagement party as his date, Lucy is pretty excited and has big plans to seduce him. But those plans never materialize - at the engagement party; an apparently drunken Gerry picks a fight with Blue, who leaves the party with intentions of leaving Hatboro first thing in the morning. When Gerry suddenly turns up dead, Blue is the prime suspect. With the police convinced of his guilt, the town against him and nowhere to turn, Lucy takes Blue in and lets him stay in her spare room, which causes plenty of gossip in the small town. Lucy is the only one who believes that Blue was set up - now she just has to prove it without losing her heart.

No one creates sexy alpha heroes like Brockmann. The humor, tenderness, and exciting plot are early indications of her talent which comes out in later novels like "Hot Target" and the excellent "Over the Edge."

4 out of 5 stars Forever Waiting..........2005-06-10

I've never read a Suzanne Brockmann novel before, but I get the impression that she's well-loved by her fans. Perhaps love has blinded them to the flaws of FOREVER BLUE. I give this book 3 & 1/2 stars.

While I must admit, that the book is another, which I read in record time, I felt cheated in the end: Carter 'Blue' McCoy (ironic name given the coy feel of this story) and Lucy Tait are two characters who start off making the reader think they will be very unique romance novel leads--that is, unconventionally and refreshingly direct and honest with their thoughts and feelings. Nonetheless, Suzanne Brockmann very conveniently...and frustratingly decided to throw a roadblock 'mystery' up between them, putting the two would-be lovers on opposite sides for too much of the book.

To be brief, Blue is a Navy Seal who has taken a vacation to visit his hometown and to be the best man in the wedding of his stepbrother...and Blue's highschool sweetheart. Local rookie cop, Lucy Tait, who has had a crush on Blue since highschool starts off as a tool for Blue to use to release some sexual steam and a way for Lucy to make her dreams a reality. Their first date goes awry, but they both find that they have bigger problems on their hands when the next day finds Blue's stepbrother dead...and Blue a prime suspect. When Lucy is assigned the lead on the case, fate takes the choice of 'romance' off the menu for Blue and Lucy until the murder is solved...or does it??

Well, while the first steaming chapters of dialogue and interaction between these two promised a great deal, they delivered very little. The two love scenes between these two were not worth the wait, and left this reviewer feeling surprised and let-down.

FOREVER BLUE had a great romance foundation that was not built upon properly. The purported 'love' between Blue and Lucy felt more like hero-worship together with a healthy dose of low self-esteem on Lucy's part and like a case of the little head ruling the big head and a little gratitude and loneliness on the part of Blue.

The Navy SEAL information was incredibly interesting and added a lot of depth to Blue; it was fascinating and the most tasty ingredient in Brockmann's literary recipe. I just wish that more time had been taken to flesh out Lucy, who I think could have been a really marvelous and special character; the tidbits about her having been on the boys' basketball and baseball teams or her life as an entrepreneur...or anything more about her background would have helped the reader 'see' her more clearly.

And finally, the story centering on a murder and the ensuing charge hanging over Blue's head was poor for a couple of reasons: The circumstances and motive didn't really make sense, and was not clearly explained in the rush of final chapters; the victim's involvement and character should have been more developed, both to make the connection to Blue feel more real and to give the reader more insight as to why he would have been involved in the conspiracy.

Potentially Incredible, Actually Unsatisfying.

4 out of 5 stars Mercy - no more mercy! Pleeze!.......2005-05-30

Suzanne Brockmann is a fantastic writer, the story is good, the dialogue even better - except one thing - a seemingly continuous need to throw the word 'mercy' in every few pages. It gets very annoying - and sounds so very prissy, coming from a Navy Seal hero - I don't care if they do say it in the south! Otherwise, a great story, and a great ability to make predictable sex scenes very unpredictable. Recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Forever unrealistic.......2005-05-01

I thought this book was.....okayyyyy. Not many fire works for me. I think the story was unrealistic in some spots. Like if you are a detective, would you allow a suspect to stay in your home. What in the world do you think that did to Lucy's credibility when concvincing others of Blue's innocence? True the police chief probably targetted her for the case bc she was a rookie and wanted her to screw up, and I think she did. Rule #1 dont live with the suspect....at least openly. I also would have liked to seen more of the history between the two, during their high school years, if the story could have began with that, it would have been cool.

5 out of 5 stars Mmmm... Blue could be my favorite color!.......2004-06-05

Know what I mean?!!! A "good lookin' devil he is" too! And he is returning to his hometown for the wedding of his step-brother to his own high-school sweetheart. Boy, are feelings in a turmoil. He hasn't been back in years (he left straight out of high school for the Navy and became a Seal) and really doesn't want to be going back now. But Blue realizes that he needs to be there to support his brother even if the circumstances are awkward.

Blue McCoy was the guy that Lucy Tait drowled over in high school. But he never noticed her then- just thought of her kind of as the kid sister. But he notices her now. Just a short time after arriving to town- Blue runs across Lucy Tait, now one of the town's police officers. Boy, has she changed. And to her he has just gotten better. Blue has to attend a wedding dinner and doesn't want to go by himself so he ask Lucy to go- a dream come true for her. Wouldn't any girl "die" to have her high school crush show up good looking and ask her out! You've got that right! Sure they would! Of course, everyone is looking for the reaction the first time Blue comes in to the dinner hall and sees his old sweetheart. Everyone thought they would end up together. He did, too. But she changed plans and went after the brother. That's ok- Blue now has eyes for Lucy but they can't explore their feelings for one another for long- when Blue's brother comes up murdered and Blue is a suspect. Matters get more intense with Lucy is put on Blue's case as investigative officer. Everyone thinks Blue went for revenge on his step-brother but Lucy knows better. So now Blue's future in the Navy Seals is in jeopardy along with Lucy's heart. But if Blue didn't do it- who did? Great book! Great passion! Great suspense! Can't wait to get another Navy Seal story...

ON BLUE FALLS POND by Susan Crandall
February 6, 2006

Amazon rating 3.5/5

"This is the story of a woman who ran away from her hometown of Dawson, Tennessee, after a devastating fire took the lives of her husband Andrew and her unborn child. Now, two years later, Glory Harrison has returned to be with her grandmother Tula, who is slowly losing her eyesight. Glory gradually recalls why she ran away (most memories of her husband had been erased) and with the help of an old friend, Eric Wilson (the fire chief who saved her life), she finally remembers everything - the good and the bad.

The book is filled with many interesting characters including Eric's two-year-old autistic son Scott (his mother Jill is in denial). Eric and Jill are divorced, due to her infidelities with a man named Jason, and while Jill seems to be a very distracted mother, Eric is there as much as he can be for Scott, a child who is slowly retreating into his own world. Tula is Glory's headstrong maternal grandmother, and despite the fact that Glory grew up in the city (her mother Clarice was embarrassed about being born in the hollow), Glory became the closest of all Tula's grandchildren. They have a special bond. Now that Tula's eyesight is failing, Glory fears that soon Tula may need help permanently." - Complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton

I enjoyed this story that takes places in the small town of Dawson, Tennessee, and found the mystery behind the fire that took the life of Glory's husband and unborn baby intriguing. Crandall's strong point is her plot, and while I enjoyed getting to know each of the characters, some of them were a bit overly dramatic, although they did fit into the overall scheme of the novel. Those who enjoy southern romances, ON BLUE FALLS POND is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional book.......2006-01-24

Susan Crandall has written another deeply moving book in On Blue Falls Pond.

Glory Harrison fled Dawson, Tenn., after the tragic deaths of her husband and their unborn child. Now two years later her beloved Granny Tula eyesight is failing so Glory returns to help. Memories of that tragic night are slowly coming back and Glory finds a friend in Eric Wilson.

Fire chief Eric Wilson rescued Glory from that long ago fire. He has always felt a connection with her. Their paths cross again since her Granny is watching Eric's young troubled toddler Scott. Eric's ex wife thinks it's all just the trauma over the divorce but Eric is convinced something is seriously wrong with his son.

Glory and Eric's concerns begin to overlap, Tula's failing vision and the problems it makes for them both. This eventually draws them closer but as Glory's memories become clearer, someone will stop at nothing to keep those memories buried.

On Blue Falls Pond is a book that will make you remember why you love to read. The characters are just like everyday people with real ups and downs. You are drawn in from page one and it takes a grip on your soul. The deepening relationship between Eric and Glory is compelling and sizzling. I couldn't put this book down once I started.

Susan Crandall is a star on the rise.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars and Worth Every Bit........2006-01-12

When I rate a book, it helps to remember that there will be times . . . when a book is TRULY a 9 or 10. A 9 or 10 rating shows I feel the book is one of the best books ever! Is ON BLUE FALLS POND a 10? Well, to me, a 10 rating is perfection! So no, ON BLUE FALLS POND is not a 10, but it certainly is a 9! Susan Crandall's ON BLUE FALLS POND is a beautiful story.

After nearly two years, Glory Harrison comes home - home to grandmother, love, and childhood roots! In reality, Glory Harrison reluctantly returns to find herself. Eighteen months ago, Glory lost everything in a devastating fire. She lost a husband. She lost a child. Now she returns to face fleeting memories and terrifying fear.

Eric Wilson lives every day with his own fear - fear for a little boy. He fears for a small son who is slowly drifting away from him. He watches, each day, as the child retreats further into another world - the world of autism. Undeniably, Eric Wilson battles each new day. He battles his ex-wife, who refuses to see the steady decline of their son and he battles his own dread and guilt. Was the divorce responsible for their child's steady decline?

ON BLUE FALLS POND is a splendid story about two lonely people with common small-town roots. Two lonely people with problems and worries. Two lonely people who discover they can't live without one another. Two lonely people who make Crandall's reader want to share in happy endings.

Susan Crandall should be proud! ON BLUE FALLS POND is a poignant, convincing story. Crandall absorbed me in her tale; she stirred me with her words; she made me believe! Her characters are well drawn and remarkably ordinary and this common ordinariness is Crandall's strong suit! Her setting and her characters ARE in every small town across the land . . . and THIS gives the reader belief . . . and the handling of the grandmother's character is true writing genius - crème de la crème!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Read - Highly Recommend!.......2006-01-10

Eighteen months ago, Glory Harrison had fled Tennessee after a fire ravaged her life leaving her without a husband, a home, and her unborn daughter. After many therapists and as many moves, she still felt an emptiness where once there had been a soul. After a heartfelt call from her ailing Gran, Glory knew it was now time to face her demons. In coming home again Glory Harrison had to face all the brutal truths of her past, even the painful ones that she had buried along with her unborn child. Her first morning back, the anguish returned with a vengeance as she looked into the face of the man who had saved her life, fire chief Eric Wilson. From that first eventful morning her memories started to return, and along with sage advice from her no nonsense, plain speaking Gran she was able to look at her past with a clearer understanding. Along with the strength and support she soon found in Eric's arms, she would find the strength to face her demons and begin a healing process. As Glory climbed out of the prison within her heart, she was able to open it to Eric, in accepting his toddler son's limitations. Unfortunately, the closer Glory came to rediscovering the truth behind the fire, the closer someone came to driving her away for good!

Susan Crandall gave wonderful and very deeply moving character studies for both main characters that will both exhilarate and soothe ones soul in this very beautiful and moving story. While handling the complexities of the two main characters admirably, she also blended in some interesting secondary storylines dealing with the macular degeneration of her gran; autism of Scott; and background into dogs for more than just for seeing eye service. Well-written, highly enjoyable, and lovingly crafted, this was one extremely robust and terrific read that I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars powerful psychological drama .......2006-01-03

Eighteen months ago Glory Harrison is rescued from an inferno by Dawson, Tennessee Fire Chief Eric Wilson; her husband Andrew died in the blaze and not long afterward she miscarried. While her beloved septuagenarian Granny Tula Baker believes that God has a reason to put her granddaughter through such a tragedy, Glory, though she remembers nothing from that tragic night no longer believes. She flees her hometown as the memories haunt her; no place feels like a home anymore.

Tula asks Glory to come home for a short stay so she can see her one last time as her eyes are failing her. Though reluctant to return to the site of her tragedy, Glory would face demons for her beloved Granny Tula so she comes home. Glory becomes upset when she thinks Eric is using Granny Tula to watch his three year old son Scott, whom he believes has a behavioral problem though his ex-wife Jill denies this. As she sees him help Granny Tula she revises her belief. She begins to remember what happened on that fatal night, but will it be in time to prevent more misfortune from reoccurring?

ON BLUE FALLS POND is a strong glimpse at how individuals react to crisis differently with some hiding or running away while others finding solace to help them cope. Granny Tula turned to God after the tragedy while Glory turned away from God; Eric accepts that there is problem with his son while Jill rejects any notion that the child has any deep rooted behavioral issues. The late exciting suspense takes away from the core value of a powerful psychological drama that grips the audience once Glory starts shaking as she approaches Dawson.

5 out of 5 stars tugs at your heart.......2006-06-30

This really hits home. As of mom of 3 boys and could find something that made me think of each of my 3 sons. A few even brought me to those "good" tears.

    Book Description

"There are many people that we meet in our lives but only a rare few will make a lasting impression on our minds and hearts." - Susan Polis Schutz

Friends are the great, unexpected discoveries that life sends our way. From the very beginning, we recognize these rare people as kindred spirits; they fit perfectly and seamlessly into our daily routines and thoughts, as if they had always been there. Their presence makes the world a friendlier, more compassionate place; their faith in our dreams enables us to reach higher than we ever have before. As time goes by, these friendships become the storehouse for our most favorite memories and our greatest hopes for the future. We find ourselves wishing that this wonderful feeling will never go away; best of all, we know if never has to -- because certain people are destined to be our friends forever.

In this new collection of poetry, world-renowned poet Susan Polis Schutz and Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Donna Fargo have joined with other authors to perfectly capture the true nature of friendship. Their eloquent words and insights give voice to the hearts that experience this very special connection. Together, they have given friends everywhere a unique gift to give, receive, and share always.

"Friends are like special gifts to us that we never discard or outgrow. No one can ever take their place. They are always welcome in the rooms of our heart. Theirs are the memories that never fade." - Donna Fargo

    5 out of 5 stars A true treasure.......2001-02-19

Last week I found a package in my mail box... it was little piece of treasure from my best friend of over two decades. The cover of this book reads "Friends Are Forever" with beautiful illustrations all the way as you read and become absorbed with the treasures of poems by Susan Polis Schutz and others. I can hardly describe the beauty of the artwork every other page entails! But most of all, under the flip was handwritten, "To my best friend..." and signed by my life-long pal. Thanks bud, and thank you to all who contributed in putting this piece of treasure together. If you have a friend that you value and love, give them this precious book and let them know every ounce of what you feel for them!!! A true gift from the HEART.

    Book Description

The love between a mother and daughter exists in a special place ...where "always" always lasts and "forever" never goes away. -- Laurel Atherton

Every mother dreams of having a daughter to share her life with, and from the instant she first cradles her daughter in her arms, a mother knows that she has been given a precious gift. She hopes that she can be the kind of mother her daughter will look up to and come to with both her worries and her joys. A mother loves when they discover they have the same feelings and care about the same things. She is thrilled when they become close confidantes, favorite companions, and the greatest of friends.

Every daughter treasures the special relationship she has with her mother. She looks forward to their time together doing "girl" things, watching movies, going shopping, or just talking at the kitchen table. She feels more self-assured knowing her mother is there, ready to lend support or advice whenever it's needed. Her mother is her teacher, protector, and one-person cheering section. And as the years go by and they both become a little older, a mother is the one with whom a daughter shares a very special friendship.

This book is a collection of poems and reflections about the special bond that exists between a mother and daughter. Writing selections by noted authors Susan Polis Schutz, Natasha Josefowitz, and Madeleine L'Engle, together with a host of popular Blue Mountain Arts authors, take the reader on an emotion-filled journey through the laughter, the learning, the growing, and all the fun-filled moments that mothers and daughters share. It is a celebration of the strongest and most wonderful relationship of all… the love between a mother and daughter.

I purchased this book for my daughter as a college graduation keepsake & found that it said so many things I too would have said if I could write so eloquently. She loved it & will keep it forever. It would also be good for a mother or grandmother!

5 out of 5 stars From Preschool to Graduation.......2003-01-24

I bought this for my son the month he started preschool. I opened it when I received the order, read it, and bawled. With the tears pouring down my face, I wrote to him in the front cover of the book, value of the book be damned! I told him the miracle of my love and my feelings about getting him this far in life. On his Graduation Day from high school, I will read the book again, most likely cry again, and proceed to put those feelings into words in the back cover. This will be a gift from just me, not Dad, or Brother, or Sis; just me. Maybe this will make it priceless to him. I hope he treasures it as I do him. Baby, if you ever see this, I LOVE YOU! Mommy
