What a fun book!! I am a BIG fan of trilogies and this is a fun set. Am anxiously awaiting the next one even though I will be sad to see it all end.

4 out of 5 stars phillips romance books seem more real..........2005-12-08

i don't like romance novels. they usually come off as schmaltzy and contrived. but this one appealed to me for some reason. i got a paperback copy of it and read it in a night. micki is a likeable character. she's a tomboy, but she definately had a feminine side, that doris day " good girl " quality. though the story was set in a sports agency and also among the rich and famous, phillips made the characters seem like real people with real problems. damian was a charming rake a spoiled man-child,the type of character you couldn't decide whether to like or love, which is the perfect type of fiction character. and the supproting characters like carter and the secretary were also good. of course, people read novels like this for the sex scenes and ms. phillips doesn't disapoint. it's hot without being gratuitous or sleazy. i will read more of ms. phillip's work in the future...

What a terrific book - I read it in a day! Micki is a publicist falls for a hot baseball player after an amazing New Years Eve kiss. The characters are real and deal with real issues of self-esteem, family, pregnancy and trust. This book has humor, baseball and great love scenes. Take a chance you will enjoy! If you enjoy sport oriented novels check out Body Check by Deirdre Martin, Winner Takes All by Nora Roberts, Remember the Time by Annette Reynolds .

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Jordan Sister Story!.......2005-09-19

Micki Jordan is the baby of the Jordan family. A publicist to sports stars, she works in the family firm "The Hot Zone". Although she has always been more of tomboy, she's getting tired of always being seen as "one of the guys". Especially by Damian Fuller, the handsome major league ball player that she has been fantasizing about for a while. So her sister Sophie gives her a make over and "girl" lessons.

Damian has been attracted to Micki for awhile, even before her make over, but now it's getting harder and harder for him to deny the attraction between them. Even worse, Micki is not the sort of woman he normally goes out with. He knows that she's not the love `em and leave `em type. But no matter how much he tells himself to stay away from her, he can't seem to stop himself. When a jealous team mate of Damian's sets them up for a media scandal, Micki and Damian find themselves hiding out together away from the public eye. Before long the sexual tension between them overcomes all of Damian's good intentions and they fall into an affair. But when they return to the real world Damian is faced with the shocking information that an ex-fling is claiming that Damian is the father of her child. He needs Micki's skills as a publicist and her support as a friend. But once the crisis is over, can Damian convince Miki that he wants her in his life permanently?

Hot Number is the second book of what appears to be three books featuring the Jordan sisters. I had read the first book, Hot Stuff, about Annabelle Jordan and truly enjoyed it. When Micki's story became available, I grabbed it and devoured it in one sitting. Damian is a wonderful hero, dealing with the end of his career and yet not quite ready to let go. Micki is dealing with her own insecurities. Together they work, but neither is prepared to step out and take a chance. Hot Number was engrossing from page one. Sexy and emotionally satisfying, readers will be left waiting anxiously for Sophie Jordan's story!

Hot number is a fun read with some hot romance!

Micki Jordan is the youngest Jordan sister, a tomboy, working at her Uncle's PR firm. She wants to attact the attention of one of her clients, a ballplayer & asks her sister to give her a makeover to become more feminine. What she doesn't realize is how he feels about her & one night lands them in a bit of trouble that ironically starts their hot romance. They are hot until she finds out a secret that may hurt their relationship, or will it bring them closer??

I absolutely loved this book & read it in two nights. I was laughing out loud at some really funny parts. I can't wait to read the other books in this series.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Hurrah in the series.......2007-02-08

I love this series (As you may have read if you checked out reviews for the first two books) but the last installment is the weakest. I miss Austin and Sam is just not as good at being a cat (albeit he does have less experience). This books focuses more on the younger keeper, Diana, which is okay but the first two book were mostly about Claire and she doesn't get enough time in this one. If the series was more than three books (and I really wish it was) then this installment would be fine, but it's the last so I wanted what I fell in love with- Claire, Austin, and Dean.
That being said this book lacks nothing in the humor and sarcastic wit of the first two. These book make me crack up again and again and I have read the series at least 4 times now. I definately reccommend if you would like a fun, hilarious trip with those who keep the rest of us from knowing just how often our world almost ends. Make sure to read the first two beofre this one!!!

5 out of 5 stars Long Hot Summoning: Keeper Chronicles #3.......2005-10-05

This book definitely lived up to the reputation of the first two books. It's quirky, zany and just down right funny. WARNING! Some of the gags can hit a bit later which can cause snickering at inopportune times and places! And for anyone who's wondered just what the cat's thinking behind that inscrutable stare...maybe it's best not to know. This is a must read along with the first two books.

3 out of 5 stars Pass the Basilisk.......2005-04-11

I was rather pleased when I discovered that there had been a third volume in Tanya Huff's summoner series. While the previous volumes where fairly lightweight fare, they were a nice turn on the witch/godmother genre, updated with a lot of pleasant silliness that made the whole thing fun to read and accessible to a wide range of audience.

For those that have never read one of these tales, summoners are a class of magic worker whose purpose is to preserve the balance between the forces of light and darkness. They come in all ages and sizes, and Huff has chosen to tell the story of one family that includes summoners, friends, and cats (cats are important). Diana and Claire are the two summoners in question here, in particular Diana, who has just graduated from high school and has received her first 'summoning.'

The powers of darkness are attempting to create a doorway to our world by building a 'parallel' mall on the Otherside. Once it is brought into synch with the real mall, all hell will break loose. The task facing Clare and Diana is to deal with homeless teens turned elves, clumsy demons, Arthurian archetypes, soul sucking mummies, midget basketball players and about a hundred other equally exotic and peculiar characters. All in the effort to save the world and turn shopping back into a normal activity.

Two things disappointed in this effort. First, is the writing. Huff decided that everyone should have a story line and all the jumping between characters as the novel reaches a climax is more than a little distracting. I found that It was hard to feel involved in the story while trying to get my bearings between fragments of episodes. And the central story itself dissolves into a backdrop for a great deal of cuteness and slapstick. The problems the characters face appear, rapidly expand into insurmountable crisis and then are suddenly resolved ex machina.

My other issue has to do with making sexual orientation a plot device and then handling it so tentatively that the whole issue becomes gratuitous. Huff is so anxious to be light hearted that she turns all the relations in the book into comic stereotypes. It a book is going to work relationships have to be more than excuses for catastrophic decisions and crises that are going to dematerialize anyway. This book would have been twice as good if Diana had shown just the natural maturity of her age.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2004-08-20

if there were the option, I'd probably rate this 2 and a half... Huff is an enjoyable writer, and she could have done better. There was nothing new -- including the novel's resolution -- brought out for this third Keeper go-round. At this point, I'd rather she saved her energies for her less lackluster series.

4 out of 5 stars if you REALLY liked the first two.......2004-07-04

otherwise a whole lot less. I thought that SUMMON THE KEEPER was one of the funniest, most original books I had ever read, I enjoyed the sequel, THE SECOND SUMMONING, although, like many sequels, it was not quite as good as the first. This third entry into the series has much of the off-the-wall humor of the first two but just isn't as good as the earlier books.

The action picks up a few weeks after THE SECOND SUMMONING, Claire and Dean (and Austin) are back at the Elysian Fields Guest House while younger sister Diana is finishing her last few hours of high school. Her first summoning arrives immediately after the last bell rings and takes her to a mall. It sems as though the mundane and magical worlds are overlapping here and need to be separated. Claire also arrives at the mall, the two set out to sort out the mess, meeting King Arthur along the way. Meanwhile back at the guest house Dean and Austin are dealing with their own problems.

The action is split among the two sisters and Dean which gives the book a lot of plot to deal with, maybe too much. At times it is difficult to keep the various threads straight, particularly between Claire and Diana.

If there is another in the series I hope that it returns to the standards of the first book. It is possible that this is the end of the series, and if so it was fun while it lasted. In any case, if you have read and enjoyed the first books by all means read this one. If the series sounds interesting to you start with SUMMON THE KEEPER. I will be looking for additional books by this author either in this series or one of her others.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Guide for Collectors !.......2004-03-01

I started collecting Hotwheels cars about 3 years ago. What makes me different than most of the other collectors, is that I live in Santiago, CHILE (here, Hotwheels cars market is very small compared with other countries). Many of the variations and models that exist in US, aren't available here. Mike's guide has been an invaluable tool for me to get those variations I never know that exist or I will never find hanging in pegs in Santiago.

I also have had the chance to email Mike many times and he's very compromised with this hobby (or better said, passion!).

If you love Hotwheels cars, you MUST buy this guide (or the new one that's coming by the end of March 2004).

U2, from RTC.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource For Collectors.......2003-04-02

I found the 'Ultimate Guide to Hot Wheels Variations' one of the most valuable resources to date for the valuation of Hot Wheels variations; both for collectors and dealers alike. As owner of [a web site,] I refer to this guide on a daily basis for determining the minute differences between Hot Wheels variants. The guide is concise, well laid out, easy to follow, and extremely accurate (in my opinion).

Hi Michael I had the pleasure of getting a copy of your book. It is excellent very informative and a great tool for us collectors. The descriptions were complete and detailed. I have been telling my fellow collectors about it. Finally a book that answers the question "Is there anyone more obsessed with Hot Wheels than me?" Well Michael my deepest sympathy it might be you. LOL . But I do want to give you your deserved recognition for a job well done on the book. Looking foward to future updates of your book. Thanks again for all your hard work on The Complete Guide to Hot Wheels Variations. Yours in the brotherhood of obsessive compulsive Hot Wheelers.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book on Variations!.......2002-05-03

This is a great book and being a variation collector for many years I can tell you that if there is a variation not listed in Mikes book, it probably does not exist. I have trusted this guy for many years and he has always been a straight shooter. I have never hunted for cars that were just rumors. I was so glad when I heard this book was coming out, I couldn't wait to buy it. It would be great if I had something he didn't have in there, but I'm still looking for all the things that are! And by the way. The Suzuki Quad is listed on Page 79 number 311 c variation, listed as "Tiger Paw Wheel" which some would call the POW wheel. Mike has always used his own abbriviations. That's why I like him and his book. (His web site was great, sure do miss it) He doesn't follow anybody elses lead. He goes his own way. I have met him and he is real easy to talk to. He is also the first one to admit when he is wrong, which you don't see too much these days when people write books. Thanks for the great book, I can't wait for the next one!

5 out of 5 stars Great info for those thinking about opening an eatery or simply want to know more about the restaurant biz.......2007-09-10

Restaurateurs depend on the fact that we all have to eat, and we choose the restaurants that provide us what we want at prices we find attractive. Simple, huh? Far from it. This handy book provides the technical and financial materials that you will need if you are actively planning, dreaming about, or wondered about opening an eatery. I urge you to read this book before you commit yourself or your money to anything specific.

Roger Fields is a CPA who has also opened successful restaurants, sold them, and closed a couple that didn't live up to expectations. His being a numbers guy is very helpful, because most restaurant people come at it from the food and aesthetic side of things. However, this is much more than a numbers book. I don't want to scare you off. The point is, you do need to think about the numbers because the better you get at them, the easier it will be to understand what you need to tweak and measure to give your major investment the best opportunity for success.

The book's 15 chapters are divided into three parts. The first part is "Dreaming for Success" and gives you the basics on evaluating your idea for the restaurant and how to see if you dream has a chance in the real world before you fork over your life's savings. The second part takes up 6 chapters and about half of the book. It is on "Developing the Details" and takes you through the down to earth factors such as menu construction, the practical side of ambiance, what you are going to provide on the table, the bar, and staffing.

The third part is "Down to Business" and provides four chapters on getting the money to open your eatery (from scratch, buying a closed operation, or buying one that is already working), what you need to understand about getting the business open, how to let people know about it in a way that they want to check you out, and what you need to know about opening day and the months and years afterwards.

This book is also interesting for folks like me who never plan on opening a restaurant but want to know what really goes on in those places we enjoy eating at and what it takes to make them work. The book is very practically written with clear language and almost no numbers. However, it is about business and if you are going to be in business, this is material you really have to know. This is a great handbook for you and will help you support your dreams and ambitions with a practical structure.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!.......2007-08-16

This book is a comprehensive manual for starting and operating your own restaurant, all the while being succesful. Having been in the restaurant business for about 11 years now, I have never found such a complete resource. Fields points to many key factors that are necessary to consider at every step of the process. The read is very easy and entertaining. It is accesible to the business-novice and anyone who might be curious as to what it takes to start your own succesful establishment!! Five Stars!

4 out of 5 stars Hot enough to keep me hooked. .......2004-11-17

I started off on Mr. Complete and contined on to all the other S.S. books I could find. Hot number was as good as the rest. I liked the characters and the plot. I thought it was funny. When you get to see how the "mix-up" happened, you see how it could happen. Not so far fetched. I thought the author could have shown more of the growth of the rebudding romance then she did, but it was still there. The sex scenes were pretty good too, Ive read better, but Ive also read way worse. That kinda falls into the could have been more. I liked it either way. This is a very enjoyable author. This is a light, fun, fast paced-page turner. It was funny and sweet and I have to say that one of my favorite parts of the book is the end. The twist. Funny. Enjoy!!

        1 out of 5 stars NOT Hot.......2004-05-29

This book was NOT HOT. The storyline was weak, the characters were weak, and the "love" between the two main characters was not believable. The story revolves round a divorced couple who both end up on the same cruise in the same cabin. There was huge potential here - to bring to life the ports of call and the setting, to fully describe the boat and the atmosphere, to make the characters romantic, etc. however this book doesn't take advantage of anything. The two main characters are childish and not very well spoken, the people they meet on the cruise are not fully developed or interesting, and the "sex" scenes are not hot and not very romantic either. It was not well-written and not well-developed. The book was halfway interesting up until about the ¾ mark, and after that it just fell very flat and was a complete struggle to get through. I do not recommend this book at all.

        4 out of 5 stars Funny & Lighthearted Tale of Two Exes...On a Cruise..........2004-03-31

Hitting the lottery is so weird to Ashley Kavanagh since she has been using those same numbers for years...and yet after she gets a divorce, she finally hits them. Pure luck? Or destiny?
Taking the offer for the free cruise from the local travel agency who wants to promote its company using her lottery winning fame for their lure, Ashley looks at it as a much needed vacation away from her bungled life and the painful divorce she had gone through.
Things seem great, fabulous even...until...fate seems to have played a cruel joke and mixed her cabin up with her ex-husband's. Why is this happening to her? How could they be stuck with each other after two years in the same cabin on the same ship?

Michael Kavanagh was feeling much the same. His carefully panned life was once again falling apart before his eyes. Two years! It had taken nearly two years for him to get back to somehwat normal agfyer his ex-wife left him over some lie that she consieved and now she was here on this ship! In the same cabin! What kind of bad joke was this?
Since the ship had no way of correcting the problem and neither one wanting to make everyone around them aware of their divorce and hostility, they decided to rough it and stay in the cabin together.
Sparks soon fly and the fun begins. Ashley soon realizes that her love for Michael is far from dead and buried and Micael in turn finds himself once again helpless to her charms. But what happens now? They both are engaged to new people? Can Ashley stop closing her mind off to what really happened two years ago and hear the trtuh for once? Can Michael convince her this time or is it a lost cause? Does he even want to dredge up old memories? Can his heart take another blow?

Funny and lighthearted for the most part, and sometimes intese and eomtional. Very believably written. My first from this author.

        5 out of 5 stars A fun, fast read.......2004-03-27

Michael and Ashley Kavanaugh are a divorced couple who win the lottery (separately, by playing their anniversary date) and end up on the same cruise together - minus either of their current love interests. Through Michael's sister's machinations (who happens to be Ashley's best friend) they wind up in the same cabin onboard the cruise. Sparks fly like crazy between these two and they can barely keep their hands to themselves. They are still wildly attracted to each other but both are wary of each other since each feels they were the wronged party in their divorce 2 years earlier. Ashley thinks Michael was unfaithful, Michael thinks Ashley lacked faith in him. This was a light and fun read.

4 out of 5 stars amusing contemporary romance.......2003-11-26

Ashley and Michael Kavanagh divorced two years ago over her mistrust of him but both insist to themselves and to his sister and her best friend Kim that they are over the other. Each one plans to marry someone else and Kim is sad because she knows they still love one another.

Realtor Ashley has had a terrible day when her car broke down as she was to meet a client and subsequently learns that her furnace caused a fire in her home. . Her only hope for salvation is the lottery draw that she has faithfully played using the anniversary of her first date with Michael and her wedding day as her lucky numbers. Her bad day turns around when she hears the winning ticket is one of her lucky numbers. Michael happens to be the other winner.

Kim arranges a cruise vacation for Ashley and Michael, but fails to tell either that they will share a ship let alone a cabin. Though they squabble, both realize they still love the other, but obstinately neither wants to admit it for fear of rejection and ridicule. Kim's blatant matchmaking looks doomed to failure.

HOT NUMBER is an amusing contemporary romance that leaves the audience chuckling at some of the antics of the lead couple and Kim. However, Ashley comes across as spoiled as she never takes the time to find out what really happened, but instead J'accuse Michael and walked. Though Kim is a female Machiavellian, fans will understand her tactics and applaud them as a last ditch desperate Hail Mary pass.
