Book Description
The Windy City isn't quite ready for Phoebe Somerville -- the outrageous, curvaceous New York knockout who has just inherited the Chicago Stars football team. And Phoebe is definitely not prepared for the Stars' head coach Dan Celebow, a sexist jock taskmaster with a one-track mind. Celebow is everything Phoebe abhors. And the sexy new boss is everything Dan despises -- a meddling bimbo who doesn't know a pigskin from a pitcher's mound.
So why is he drawn to the shameless sexpot like a heat-seeking missile? And why does the coach's good ol' boy charm leave cosmopolitan Phoebe feeling awkward, tongue-tied....and ready to fight?
The sexy, heartwarming, and hilarious "prequel" to Susan Elizabeth Phillip's This Heart of Mine -- her sensational bestsellng blockbuster -- It Had To Be You is an enchanting story of two stubborn people who believe in playing for keeps.

One of my favorite books!.......2007-09-08
Dan was an especially real character, and very attractive. There was good sexual tension between Phoebe and him. For instance, I liked the scene when Dan mistakes Phoebe for his ex-wife and attempts to play out one of his wife's fantasies, even though he's a little disgusted by the fact he's doing this.
I didn't mind that Phoebe was a little bimbo-ish. She's not really. It's just the way she was brought up to think she should behave.
I believed in this romance and believed the characters should be together and would have a happy life together after I closed the book. I've re-read it several times over the years. I think it's great.
What happened?.......2007-08-15
I ordered this book because of all the great reviews. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I really started to like it. And then the end came....I couldn't have been more dissapointed. The end of this book had so much going on, and so much of it was completely ridiculous, that I just couldn't wrap my head around it. I don't want to ruin it for everyone, so I won't give you specifics. I can only tell you that once the last game begun, I was completely put off by how quickly and ridiculously the story played out. Susan Elizabeth Phillips has it in her to be a good writer, I just don't think this was her best work.
Loved it!.......2007-08-07
Susan Elizabeth Phillips does it again! I read this book a few years ago, but purchased it now so I can reread as often as I'd like. If you're not one of her fans, you will be after reading this book. Awesome story line, characters, believability, and humor.
wow!!!.......2007-05-21
i read this book. then went out and found every other one she has ever written. it is wonderful!!!!
I have never read a better first page in a book!.......2007-05-21
And then the book just got better. Ms Phillips is the best dialogue writer in the world, bar none. The stories, the sex scenes, the crazy mix-ups, the wild hairs, everything always just blends together to create something utterly fabulous with everything she writes. I just hope I have as much spunk as these ladies do! They say and do what you would hope you would in the situation :)
I love the over-lapping books--please keep writing them! You are just a divine writer and I'll buy anything you write!
Book Description
An engaging, accessible guide to educating yourself in the classical tradition.
Surrounded by more books than ever, readers today are frequently daunted by the classics they have left unread. The Well-Educated Mind, debunking our own inferiority complexes, is a wonderful resource for anyone wishing to explore and develop the mind's capacity to read and comprehend the "greatest hits" in fiction, autobiography, history, poetry, and drama.
Far from tossing readers into the swarming sea of classics and demanding that they swim, this book offers brief, entertaining histories of five literary genres, accompanied by detailed instructions on how to read each type. The annotated lists at the close of each chapterranging from Cervantes to A. S. Byatt, Herodotus to Paul Gilroypreview recommended reading and encourage readers to make vital connections between ancient traditions and contemporary writing.
Based on the same classical method as Bauer's terrifically successful The Well-Trained Mind, The Well-Educated Mind provides not only a thorough grounding in the classics but also a widely applicable foundation for self-education.

A must-have for deciding on your must-haves.......2007-09-08
As I went through the gambit of education all the way through my current PhD program, I read books to grasp the bare bones of what I would be tested on or what I would be required to reguritate into a scientific thesis.
Not only this book challenge and change the way I have been reading, it also gave me the tools to actually enjoy reading again.
I heartily recommend this book partnered with "1001 Books you Must Read Before You Die." If each book only takes you a week to read, then the entire list should only take you a little over 20 years.
Ready? Go!
An easy guide to serious reading.......2007-05-23
Many, many years out of college I felt my mind atrophying and decided to start a "serious" reading program, similar to the old "summer reading" that used to be done by high-school and college students. I picked up this book to use as a I guide.
Yes, many of the techniques Susan Wise Bauer talks about in the opening chapters are ones that many readers will have picked up along the way. But even experienced readers may find her suggestions of keeping a "commonplace book" or reading journal helpful and brief background explanations of the various literary genres helpful.
The very structured approach to notekeeping and journaling will probably not sit well with every reader. (I don't plan to follow all of her suggestions myself.) And many people will surely debate about the choices included on the reading lists. But Bauer is very firm about taking a book and making it your own, so disregard suggestions that don't work for you. And as she admits, no one reading list will be considered canonical by everyone. In fact, Bauer encourages the reader to use her lists as a "jumping off" point.
All in all, I think any reader who is serious about reading the great "classics" can find something in this book to help with that process.
Poor imitation of Mortimer Adler's How to Read a Book. .......2007-05-20
I read this book and learned nothing new at all. The book should be entitled: A brief overview of the simpler points of Mortimer Adler's "How to Read a Book".
The Well-Educated Mind quotes extensively from the Adler's book.
However except for the lengthy passages quoted from Adler it is not written using language that comes anywhere near to the elevated style that is a joy to read and makes the reader privy to the great mind that participated in the compilation of the "Great Books" series.
The Well-Educated mind attempts to make the ideas raised by Adler accessible by communicating a few of the ideas in the simplest of prose.
Save yourself the trouble and go to the source I say. Read Mortimer Adler!!
I even found the test that Mrs. Bauer uses to allow the reader to take stock of his reading level to be demeaning. Not only was it overly simple, but dangerous, because many of those who then embark on reading the great classics recommended by Mrs. Bauer will be ill prepared for the change in style and level of sophistication in the ideas presented.
The practical answer to "test linked education.".......2006-12-30
This books is teaches the kind of logic that I thought was lost in educational theory; finally some common sense! I was a teacher and am now planning to homeschool my grandchildren. My daughter and I have been more and more concerned about the state test-oriented text books that my grandson has been studying. This book and The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home bring order and sense to the purpose of education. Both books echo the direction and focus of the education I received in parochial school and treat the subject with logic and clarity. They both deal with an orderly development of the mind and leave me feeling confident in the program we are developing for my grandchildren based on these books. The author has a sound and orderly approach to education whether it is for a grandmother like me who never wants to stop learning or the developing mind of a child.
You'll enjoy reading even more when you learn how to do it!.......2006-12-14
I've checked this out from the library, -a few times because I want to really learn the techniques that are presented here. Its a good sized book and there is a lot of excellent information to get in your brain. I have this on my wish list to buy now because it's so good, and I want to be able to take more time with it, -to study and absorb it!
The reason I want to spend more time with this is because not only do I love to read, I also enjoy doing book reviews, and I think this book is an important tool to help me to become better at both! This is a book that will have a permanent spot in my collection because I want to have it available for my school-aged daughters as well.
SUPER book here! I can't wait to get my own copy!
Book Description
As seen on public television stations nationwide, a revolutionary new approach to playing non-classical music on the piano.Have you ever wished you could play the piano? Well, now you can! Scott "The Piano Guy" Houston teaches you to play the way the pros play, in a style enormously simpler than traditional classical piano and with an absolute minimum of note-reading. By focusing on playing the melody with the right hand (one note at a time) and simple chords with the left hand, Houston gives you the tools you need for a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Best of all, your tour guide to this adventure forces you to have fun along the way!

If you're trying to decide..........2007-09-26
...whether to buy "How to Play Piano Despite Years of Lessons: What Music Is and How to Make It at Home" or "Play Piano in a Flash! Play Your Favorite Songs Like a Pro--Whether You've Had Lessons or Not!" by Scott Houston, buy BOTH--- and do read Scott Houston's book FIRST. He explains the whole premise of playing off chords so much more clearly and simply. After reading Scott's book, you can delightfully play all sorts of piano music you may have around your house effortlessly after a few tries. To give you an example, I used to practice fairly simple folktunes for about a week before (somewhat joltingly) being able to play up to tempo at an even pace. Now, knowing what I know from Scott's book, I can play any such song in about 15 minutes. Really! And I can play faster and more eloquently than I ever could before. Now, I have confidence that I could accompany any singer (including myself)-- a trick I used to think only "good pianists" could do (with much practice). In short, it motivates you to play music almost immediately in a fun and joyous manner.
Now for "How to Play Piano Despite Years of Lessons: What Music Is and How to Make It at Home". It's A LOT more philosophical, and a lot more wordy. It explains everything in much greater detail, and is very fond of the basic Oom-pah-pah sort of playing. The "standard" technique call for playing the melody an octave higher, the root note in octaves on the lowest possible section of the piano (for the Oom) and the chord (reconfigured so as never to reach higher than middle E nor lower than middle C) for the Pah-Pah. This takes quite a bit of PRACTICE. I certainly do not master this in 15 minutes! However, using this technique, I sound like one of those pianist that play at cash bars in restaurants that used to send my mother in the other direction because the "noise" gave her a "headache". It may work exceptionally well for some pieces, and it is certainly not the ONLY device taught in this book. It *is* a good book, with lots and lots of ideas of how to vary the bass notes and such to get a "full" sound from your piano. But you might get a headache or two... and might get discouraged and give up playing piano after all. (DON'T!) It is less motivating, and much more practice than Scott's book. I just can't decide whether I even like the result of the techniques shown. But music theory is explained in a somewhat harmless manner....
Now, I again suggest you buy BOTH books so that you can read them both, try them both, and make your own decisions. However, if you're relatively new to this topic, I suggest that you at least buy Scott's book first. Yes, you'll probably finish it in one sitting and it will seem so OBVIOUS after you read it that you'll wonder whether you ought to have spent the money for the book at all. Yes! Now, sit down and play the piano using these technique to see for yourself!
(To give you some point of reference, my level of playing beforehand using the classical method was Book Four of John Thompson series.... about intermediate I'd say.)
Azphil.......2007-06-30
Great instruction. I've played sax for years and never touched the piano until now. From moderately easy to moderately difficult. Good learning system.
Play Piano in a Flash!.......2007-06-28
If I could give this 10 stars I would !!!!
Our son started this program the day it arrived and he has not stopped since. In no time at all he was playing his favorite songs on the piano and has even arranged 2 of his own songs!
He had not had any type of lessons prior to this, just the desire to learn to play the piano. (I do have 3 aunties who are all self taught-so he may come by this naturally)
Anyway, if you are wanting to play the piano and do not have the time or the money for expensive lessons BUY this book! You will not be sorry, it is worth it's weight in gold as far as I am concerned. (atleast "this is one woman's opinion")
In less than 2 years he now plays and sings solos in church!
Great book for beginners.......2007-06-09
I really liked this book. Specially because it clarified for me somet hing I had thought: Classical piano and party piano are a world apart so the ways to learn to play the two can not be the same. Most people want to play piano for parties, have fun, etc. But then they get into learning classical piano that is not it! This book shows how to learn the right way. I do not mark it as 5 star as I do think it is a bit glib on "how easy it is to play piano" and gives you the idea that there is nothing to it, when the truth is that is easy but requires hard work and practice if you want to become good at it. Everything else is great
Very helpful.......2007-04-30
This well-written little book is just what the trepidatious beginner needs.
Even a rank beginner would probably do fine with this. Having read Houston's book, I'm now even angrier at my old piano teacher than I used to be (yes, you, Mrs. Ó Murchú!). You mean it was that simple all along?
Houston, using layman's terms, makes it plain that there's no mystery to the piano. Chords with the left, melody with the right, and away you go.
He does glide over the fact that you actually DO have to either i) learn the melody by heart on the keyboard or ii) learn how to sight-read quickly, but there's no avoiding that really.
A good book, easy to read, and will definitely get you playing simple tunes (that sound good!) within days or weeks.
Like many, I was introduced to Houston's book and technique through Public Television, and despair for the United States should PBS go under.

Revealing look at women's strength and power.......2007-03-09
Eavesdrop on any group of women lunching at the next table and you are likely to witness laughter, tears, support, commiseration and collaboration in action. Entrepreneur Vickie Milazzo identifies how women can best utilize these natural feminine capabilities to achieve life and career success and fulfillment. Milazzo dedicates an insightful, thorough chapter to each of the "10 Feminine Forces" she has identified. She uses personal stories and the experiences of successful women to coach you to new, unexplored heights. Sometimes her attempt to motivate through her personal saga crosses the line from inspiring to self-congratulatory. Yet, if you set aside this editorial flaw, you have a well-scripted formula for success. We recommend this book to all women who share a spark, a dream and the desire for a richer, fuller life.
Will make you think differently about reaching your goals.......2007-02-15
I've never read a self-help type book before, and probably wouldn't have picked this book out on my own. I recieved a copy of this book through a marketing campaign, and figured that I'd give it a shot.
I usually fly through novels and non-fiction books, so I've had to take a completely diferrent approach to reading this book. I've been plowing through it, one chapter every week or so, and it's been having some impact on how I think about my professional life.
The book is filled with the author's anecdotes as well as stories of other women, and guides you throuh exercises that break down your goals and actions. I'm finding it helpful, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a book to help them understand how to reach their goals.
Wonderful book.......2007-02-14
I really like the book. It provides motivational examples and good analysis. It's about how women can be successfully in their lives. Make a wonderful gift to any woman you know.
My newest guide for success.......2007-02-11
Filled with thought-provoking gems of wisdom and the real-life examples to back them up, I found this book to be a wonderful source of motivation as I think about "what comes next" in my career.
Inspiring.......2007-02-05
At first I wasn't sure that this book was for me, as it focuses on ways women can be successful in business and I had no desire to open my own business. The more I read, though, the more I realized that this book helps women to be successful in everything they do. The strengths and promises Vikki outlines, such as flexibility and integrity, are crucial to success in any area, whether as a mom, a teacher, a corporate employee or a CEO. This book has inspired me to strive for more in my personal and professional life.
Book Description
Marie Rudisill, aka "The Fruitcake Lady," made her first Tonight Show with Jay Leno appearance in December 2000 in a now classic segment, when she helped Jay Leno and Mel Gibson make fruitcake. Since 2002 she has regularly dished out sassy advice to fans in her popular segment called "Ask The Fruitcake Lady."A frenzied mother asks, "My teenage son sleeps all the time. How do I get him to help around the house?" The Fruitcake Lady responds with a no-nonsense answer: "Well, all you got to do is get up there and say, Get your ass out of the bed! And I mean get it out!'" Ask the Fruitcake Lady will gather together some of Marie's finest morsels of wisdom and advice, including:-Spicy advice on profanity in children -Nutty wisdom of talking to houseplants -Dishing out a good helping of sass when she addresses curing hangovers -Outrageous ways of dealing with mothers-in-law and bachelor parties -Finding a rich man to marry -What a single, soon-to-be 40 woman needs more than a man"The Fruitcake Lady" is not just any nonagenarian from Florida. She is Truman Capote's aunt, and it was her book, Fruitcake: Memories of Truman Capote and Sook, which brought her to the attention of Jay Leno. Her quips to viewers' questions have made her a favorite on the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

You Should Know.......2007-08-30
Having seen the Fruitcake Lady on the Jay Leno show, her answers to questions presented were always humorous with that grandmotherly common sense advice.
I enjoyed reading this book and not only laughed at some of her answers but at some of the questions as well. If you are looking for a read that's quick, humorous and enlightening,Ask the Fruitcake Lady is it.
Ask the Fruitcake Lady: Everything You Would Already Know If You Had Any Sense.......2007-02-20
This book was laugh out loud funny. I bought it for my sister's birthday and thought I'd read a few pages. I read it cover to cover because I couldn't put it down. The Fruitcake Lady had more good sense than most people walking around today.
Ask the Fruitcake Lady:Everything You Would Already Know..............Sense.......2007-02-13
Loved this book! Get ready to laugh out loud! Everything you ever wanted to know and some things you don't! Shared it with my "RED HAT" friends! What a laugh we had! Have already bought another copy and sent it out of state for another friend's birthday!
Everyone needs to read this one!.......2007-01-11
Forget your troubles and get some good old fashioned common sense!
Hilarious - just what we'd expect from The Fruitcake Lady!.......2006-12-15
If you have seen The Fruitcake Lady on Jay Leno or caught her on YouTube or Videosift, then you will know what to expect from this extremely funny, brash, no-nonsense book! She uses the question and answer format of her appearances on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, and answers people's questions with her unique blend of Southern charm, old-fashioned values, and a refreshing modernity that allows her to talk about the most shocking things in clear language (read: sometimes she swears like a sailor!).
All of the material in this book is fresh - I am a huge fan and have seen all of her Leno appearances and read her Fruitcake recipe book, so I would have noticed if any of the Q and A had been recycled.
It is a great coffee table book. It is arranged with each page having a Q and A, with a black and white photo of her pointing her finger or making a colorful expression at the silly questions she is sometimes asked on every other page or so, whenever the Q and A for the page is a bit shorter.
She gives a lot of very funny advice, but she also touches on a few more serious matters, and it is neat to get the perspective of someone so frank and with such good common sense. I read the whole book in about an hour and a half, but have gone back a few times for a good chuckle. Her advice about back waxing will never grow stale.
Marie Rudisill, our beloved Fruitcake Lady, died in November 2006, so if you know any fans or simply anyone who needs a good kick in the arse sometimes, this would be an excellent and timely way to honor her memory.
Book Description
For this book, author Diane Conway approached a police officer, a waitress, a politician, a lawyer, a cab driver, and many others, and asked them each the same question: "What would you do if you had no fear?" The results, chronicled in this book, were both surprising and enlightening. Her respondents told her their secrets, their long-hidden dreams, and their fears. Their dreams included quitting mind-numbing jobs, applying to medical school, buying tickets to South America, finding true love, quitting drinking, or having an affair. The distance between dreaming and doing, according to Conway, is surprisingly short. In What Would You Do If You Had No Fear? her fresh voice and "Studs Terkel in drag persona" challenge readers to stop, open their hearts, and truly live. Included are self-tests, quizzes, growth exercises, and inspiring quotes for realizing one's fear-free potential.

Loved It.......2007-01-13
Just what I needed to refocus and prioritize after 20 years in the same job. This was an instant sabbatical for me. Gave me the energy boost I needed to move forward.
a better way to challenge yourself!.......2006-05-16
This book is fantastic in pushing us all to our very limits, posing the best of the best "what if" questions, and ecouraging us to act on them! So much fun to read, dream, and answer with action-- what would you do if you had no fear???
What would You do I you had no fear?.......2005-09-24
A light delightful read that offers hope to those who feel caught in a life of few choices. It's a basic follow-your-heart advice manual which also questions how much one depends on money for happiness.
Inspiration: yes; Substance: no.......2005-06-30
A magazine article prompted me to buy this book. Conway's humor's engaging, and the anecdotes are inspiring. But the book stops there.
Each section is headed with an aspect of the title's question:
*What would you do [if you had no fear]?
*Who would you be [if you had no fear]?
*Where would you go [if you had no fear]?
Your answers are likely to be:
...I would do/make/be/write/create ____, if I had ____.
...I would go to ____, except that I don't have _____.
...I would be a ____, if I'd ever gotten to ____ like I wanted to, all those years ago before ____.
And you are left hanging with your answers. Conway does inspire you to rekindle your desires, but she doesn't help you deal with the rationalizations standing in your way.
[For that, honestly, I'd suggest Laura Berman Fortgang's "Living Your Best Life."]
Conway often alludes to what occurs in her seminars. So the reader (or at least this reader) is left to wonder whether the seminars have the same content as the book, or whether they have more meat to them--and if so, why isn't that in this book?
Inspirational!.......2004-12-12
This book gives hope and inspiration to many who wish to change or break through a fear. I enjoyed every story and could in some way relate to them all. Ms. Conway has a refreshing and witty way of writing and look forward to her next book!! I recommend this as a gift to someone that needs a little boost.

Customer Reviews:
Too little.......2007-02-07
Goes a mile wide and an inch deep. I would rather the same book but each chapter by an expert in that area with a lesson/example.
Easy and Substantial.......2006-06-25
I find this book very easy to read. It is fraught with valuable, profound, substantial insights. It will rapidly acquaintance people who are not yet familar with MBA topics and it will solidify the knowledge of veterans in these issues. So, either way you win. Also, even though this book is intended mainly for service providers (doctors, lawyers), it can be easily extrapolated to any managerial work at whatever stage. Dr Jusuf Hariman, Manuscript Assessor, Fellowship of Australian Writers.
Also serves as great inspiration if you ever thought about doing your MBA.......2005-12-31
The hidden gem in this book, for those of you who don't have formal business education and always wondered whether the MBA was attainable for you, is that this book actually serves a wonderful second purpose. MBA in a Day allows you to "kick the tires", giving you a high-level overview of what you 'should' expect to cover during MBA study. Having read this book, I found the inspiration to learn more; as such I have enrolled in the MBA program where I already completed a masters in IT.
My only issue with MBA in a Day is that I would have loved to have seen a chapter on Entrepreneurship-- which would be relevant to certain MBA-wannabes (like me), as well as the existing professionals (the main audience of the book) hoping to launch their own private practices.
Neverthelesss, Dr. Stralser presents a wide variety of topics (including HR, Organizational Behaviour, Leadership, Ethics, Accounting/Finance, Economics, Marketing, Project Management, IS and Quality Management) in such an approachable way, making seemingly daunting subject matter easy to digest and appreciate.
A definite buy, I am glad I picked up this book.... if you are thinking about doing your MBA, you should too.
Perfect for anyone.......2004-12-11
In my case the book was a great refresher having graduated over 3 years ago with a Business Adm. Major in college.
For anyone unfamiliar with basic business concepts (Theory) this book is a practical & simple guide to learning the basics.
For other's like me it's a great reference tool and refresher if you've been away from the books for a while.
I'm planning to go to B-School this fall and I feel a little more comfortable now- knowing that the material is fresh in my mind.
The book is easy to understand, well written and logically compiled. I would definitely recommend anyone searching for a business concepts book to give this book a shot.

Learning to Unlearn.......2007-06-09
I usually read a book of 175 pages in 2 - 5 days, however it took me 3 weeks to read this book. The reason is because I had to stop and think, ponder and strive to understand how the principles presented would change my life and ministry. I read many paragraphs 2 or 3 times as I hungered to ingest and internalize these "street level" principles for ministry that really touches people where they live. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels unchalleged by the ministries and purpose of their local church. "Unlearning Church" is a book that will stir your heart to both experience and live out real faith and purpose.
no more McChurch.......2004-12-16
Mike Slaughter has been one of the most articulate voices of the emerging church movement and his work at Ginghamsburg UMC has been liberating for many of us in the mainline denominationns.
Slaughter emphasizes the need to develop a church that takes seriously the mission to embody Christ in a way that responds to the culture the church finds itself in. This is more than the use technology and contemporary stuff approach, moving on to an organic embodiment of the kingdom. Slaughter says that the answers of Ginghamsburg are not necessarily your (or my) answers as that may not be authentic for our situation. He says to do this we have to unlearn church as we know it.
He mixes his insights with stories of churches that he considers to be effectively unlearning church and a series of questions at the end of each chapter to encourage the reader to actively unlearn what he/she "knows" to be true
My only problem with the book is that I've heard it in so many venues that it did not seem new, but that is more my issue than Slaughter's
Wake up or Stay Dead.......2002-03-14
It's time for church leadership to wake up and see that those they want to reach for Chrisitianity are DIFFERENT than they are! Younger, in-touch with today's communications venues - but yearning for God (just as many of us have been). Slaughter uses vivid examples of how some churches have woken up to this fact. And, in a lively writing and textual font style of presentation brings this point home. As an older (age 50+) church leader my eyes are beginning to open. And,as Slaughter points out, a whole new adventure is beginning. Jesus Christ was, and is relevant - a simple fact not to be forgotten.

As Edmund Burke said, "The greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse." This is sometimes excruciatingly true with parents. There are the typically anxious ones who get a little uptight about letting their teenagers borrow the car, and then there are the rigid kinds who won't even let their kids leave the house when they want to--or even eat or go to the bathroom when they need to.
Written for the 14 million adult children who've survived an upbringing with the latter type of parents, If You Had Controlling Parents takes the classic Toxic Parents to a new level. Author Dan Neuharth, Ph.D., a family therapist, knows his subject thoroughly; he survived a childhood with a father who has the candor to refer to himself as "an S.O.B."
Neuharth says, "If your parents controlled you in unhealthy ways, they may have planted land mines in your psyche." Research shows that behaviors and traits exhibited by adult children of controlling parents include the following: depression, low self-esteem, distorted self-image, eating disorders and other addictions, stress-related health problems, inability to sustain an intimate relationship, and more. While this may seem like a heavy lot to handle, Neuharth maintains there's always hope of overcoming the past and changing yourself--even if it means making the drastic move of cutting off contact with one or both of your parents.
He gives a lengthy self-test to determine if your parents were controlling; gives profiles of eight typical styles of controlling parents to help you better recognize how you may be presently affected by your upbringing; and then delves into the process of understanding why your parents acted the way they did in order to start healing emotionally. This is especially important, he says, if you now have children of your own and want to stop the damaging cycle of parental control. He doesn't give a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all recovery plan, but rather suggests several "paths to healing" and exercises to help you, as he terms it, "emotionally leave home." The book's subtitle--"A Guide for Letting Go of Anxiety, Self-Blame and Perfectionism and Improving Assertiveness, Boundaries and Confidence"--says it all. This is self-help at its best.

Book Description
Do you sometimes feel as if you are living your life to please others? Do you give other people the benefit of the doubt but second-guess yourself? Do you struggle with perfectionism, anxiety, lack of confidence, emotional emptiness, or eating disorders? In your intimate relationships, have you found it difficult to get close without losing your sense of self?
If so, you may be among 15 million adults in the United States who were raised with unhealthy parental control. Too much or the wrong kinds of control in childhood can cause lasting problems in adulthood, and these connections are often subtle and hard to spot. If you have problems or habits that stubbornly resist change, they may be symptoms of unresolved issues with a controlling parent or upbringing.
In this groundbreaking book, accomplished family therapist Dr. Dan Neuharth offers a self-test to help you identify whether you are facing problems in adulthood caused by unhealthy control in childhood. You will understand both how and why your parents may have overcontrolled you and find dozens of practical suggestions that can help you solve your problems at the very root.
This book will enable you to quiet your "inner critics," bring more balance to your moods and relationships, increase your optimism and assertiveness, and achieve greater autonomy. It offers a variety of ways to deal with stressful family holidays, parents who still control, and parental aging and mortality. It will help you to make peace with your past and break the cycle of control so you can avoid overcontrolling your own children and other loved ones.
Based on extensive interviews and research and packed with thought-provoking insights, If You Had Controlling Parents also includes engaging profiles of a richly diverse group of adults who grew up overcontrolled. These inspiring examples of how others have come to grips with the detrimental consequences of early control will provide you with a road map for accelerating your own growth and healing. If you have felt driven to pursue your parents' values and dreams ahead of your own, this compassionate book explains that no one is to blame and reminds you that unhealthy control is a generations-old cycle that can stop with you.
If your parents controlled you in unhealthy ways, they may have unwittingly planted land mines in your psyche. As a result, you may tiptoe through life expecting buried danger, not treasure, in your path. You may wait...and wait...for permission to love, succeed, and feel content. Permission you're not sure how to get. Permission you may have difficulty granting to yourself.
This book is packed with features to help you thrive even if you had far too little permission to be yourself as a child. Knowledge is power, and powerful growth and healing come from understanding, not blaming, your parents or upbringing. You'll discover:
Fifty reasons why people control in unhealthy ways--and how recognizing these reasons can help you cope with controlling mates, friends, family members, or work associates
How overcontrol of your eating, dress, privacy, social life, speech, and feelings in childhood may still hamper you in adult life
How controlling families use "Truth Abuse" to cement unhealthy loyalties that last for years--and how to gain autonomy
The eight styles of controlling parenting--Smothering, Depriving, Perfectionistic, Cultlike, Chaotic, Using, Abusing, and Childlike
If you or someone you love grew up with unhealthy control, this book offers discovery and resolution. With the guidance of accomplished family therapist Dr. Dan Neuharth, discover what may lie underneath some of your most stubborn and troubling habits, patterns, or problems and resolve your relationship with your parents, whether they are living or dead. If your childhood felt like a scene from Mommie Dearest or The Great Santini--or if you simply feel confused about how you were raised--make peace with your past so you can truly take your place in the world.
Customer Reviews:
This is the most amazing book I have ever read.......2007-06-08
I couldn't believe I had found this book (browsing on Amazon) as I was reading it!! I had not been physically abused... My parents are hard working people who did the best they could... But there surely was control from my dad. At 30 years old, this book was the key for me to understand where it's coming from!! And I made a surprising move of not mailing a destructive 40-page letter to him from the other side of the world, and having an impacting but sincere 6-hour face-to-face conversation instead. The result has been the beginning of a wonderful relation with my dad, which has had a unifying effect for all my family, which was growing apart. In my case, I have finally taken the reins of my career thanks to the incredible and quick infusion of self-confidence that has come to me.
Thanks, Dr. Neuharth.
Controlling Parents? Inside view..........2007-05-21
I was amazed at how well the book was able to take specific situtations and relate them to how they could come about from childhood experiences so well. No only was the author able to match the response to current events to specific type of parental controls growing up, but also the feelings present in both situations. The options and tools suggested were clear, workable, and didn't make you feel like you were always going to be a victim or helpless to overcome the problem. It you were under a strict rule, abused, or in any way still dealing with childhood issues haunting you, this book might just give you some insight into making the best of the situations.
Real Good Orientation.......2006-11-06
If you've been trying to figure out in vain how to get along with your dominating parents without giving up your own life and space, go and get this book. It's one of those that can actually make a difference in your life due to its exact observations, complex explications and realistic approaches. It surely got me on the right track.
Free yourself!.......2006-08-30
Even if you are advanced in your recovery, this is a fantastic book to read to see the subtleties in the way an unhealthy upbringing affects your current realtionships. The author lists all the different types of controlling parents and the way they leave us feeling. He offers stories of several other people that may have similar experiences to your own.
Very easy to read, and a way to escape the hold of a controlling & abusive parent.
If you had controlling Parents: How to make peace with your past and take your place in the world.......2006-03-28
It is and excellent book to read to learn about your past and not struggle any longer wether it be about you or not.

"...What You Had for Lunch" Provides Food For Thought.......2007-07-20
"No One Cares What You Had for Lunch" absolutely delivers on it's subtitle: "100 Ideas for Your Blog". Ms. Mason has provided a short, easy read that can get you started when you are blocked, provide color and flavor when you get bland and stale, and get you thinking creatively when you are tired of the same old, same old.
I read my copy on a Saturday afternoon in my hammock, but I will return to it often as my blog develops. Some of these ideas you can implement as is, and some are meant for you to think about and personalize. The idea of this book is to motivate you to keep at it, to keep it fresh, to keep it original, and try to evolve your blog into something that lives on its own.
Ms. Mason is a successful blogger herself, and she reads blogs far and wide. Therefore, this book provides an experienced perspective on blogging. However, she has written it so that bloggers of all levels will find it useful and understandable. I read my copy on a Saturday afternoon in my hammock, but I will return to it often as my blog develops.
I'd rather know what you had for lunch after reading this book.......2007-06-25
I received this book for review on a whim. I assumed it would give interesting and insightful ideas for blogging - not! While the book gave 100 ideas for blogging, they were for personal lifestyle blogs designed to invoke comment and conversation. That's fine for some, but I simply didn't care for the touch-feely personal ideas the author had.
The title of the book was accurate. She right, nobody cares what you had for lunch, but for some reason the author wants you to care what she had for lunch! It's all about things she'd like to see in the blogs she reads and while I don't spend hours each day reading blogs, I know I'd quickly get bored of a blog that had such ideas as posting your high school yearbook pics or the contents of your purse.
The meal on the cover was clearly more appetizing than the content of the book!
Pros: Great for insomniacs!
Cons: Yawn...I'm sorry...still groggy from the book. Oh yeah cons...very personal ideas about what a blog should be and lacks universal appeal in the blogosphere. Unless you are interested in learning about the author...pass on this book. Few if any of her 100 ideas would get people to return to your blog.
Great Motivation.......2007-05-19
There are lots of good ideas here and a style that makes me want to write. It'll take me a year to get through all the suggestions, and for that I'm very grateful.
And like one of the reviews below wrote, this book is a perfect reminder that good people are out there doing great things on blogs and that you, too, are able to join them.
Not worth the price of the book........2007-05-15
For the price of the book I don't think it a worthwhile book to have.
I can find a more useful one from Amazon listings.
Save your money!.......2007-04-15
This was a total waste of time and money. Not helpful at all IMO.
