Good Kitty.......2007-09-05
I enjoyed the character development and story line. I have read all of Laurell Hamiltons books and the Rachel Morgan series. I have tried a few new authors and I will continue with this series
Light Hearted and Fun.......2007-07-24
I had just tackle a 1500 page novel and moved on to this book. I was not disappointed I wanted something lighter and that's what I got. This is a good story and easy read and kept my attention. I will probally buy more of this series.
A fresh new take on the supernatural world........2007-07-10
I loved this story for many reasons. The psychological aspects of accepting such a change in one's life stand out as a strong point.
Review - Good idea, but heroine is a victim.......2007-07-02
A fun twist on the urban fantasy plotlines - Kitty is a werewolf and has a radio call-in show - very fun. She also inadvertantly is drawn into a murder mystery along the way, and that mystery
is well-done and satisfying to read.
If you like urban fantasy novels featuring strong women Anita Blake(Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Book 1)), Mercy Thompson (Moon Called (Mercy Thompson Series, Book 1)) or Rachel Morgan Dead Witch Walking, The Good the Bad and the Undead, Every Which Way but Dead, A Fistful of Charms and Undead in the Garden of Good and Evil in Dates from Hell (5 books, as a set) (The Complete Rachel Morgan Series) this book may NOT be for you.
Kitty is portrayed in this first novel as newly wered, and controlled by her alpha, which also includes his perrogative as such of essentially getting to rape her whenever he feels like it. And she takes it. She also hates him, but talks about how she used to love him because he was the alpha and "protected her" - ick ick ick. And how did she become a were in the first place? You guessed it - raped by a frat guy while on a date and then dumped in the middle of the woods where she is attacked by a werewolf. The whole book is like this, and when I read it, I just thought "Pathetic and annoying."
The book ends with the bad guys essentially winning, and her getting no revenge because she is weak and insecure.
I've started the second book in this series, in the hopes that kitty will grow a set of fangs and stop being everyone's victim. Will update with a review on that to see if this series can redeem itself.
A Great start for a newcomer to the Paranormal Genre, not too graphic, not too silly.......2007-05-03
I'm somewhat new to the paranormal genre (having been introduced to it by Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire SeriesAll Together Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Bk. 7)) and for me this was a perfect blend of romance, suspense, mysticism, and humor. I've enjoyed meeting Kitty and by the end of the book, you understand the fine line between human and wolf that she treads everyday. She is pulled by the freedom of running with the wolves and the support/protection she receives from the pack, but at the same time she still has her human ties such as friends, family, and a career.
This is a great series for us newbies, not too graphic, not too sexual (not that I don't love a good love scene, it shouldn't consume the storyline), and definitely not too silly. I really tried to get into MaryJanice Davidson's Undead series but fond them much too goofy, but definitly lighter than LK Hamilton or Anita Blake.
I recommend to anyone wanting to check out Paranormal for the first time
Book Description
A gripping narrative that brings to life a legendary moment in American history: the birth, life, and death of the Black Power movementWith the rallying cry of 'Black Power!' in 1966, a group of black activists, including Stokely Carmichael and Huey P. Newton, turned their backs on Martin Luther King's pacifism and, building on Malcolm X's legacy, pioneered a radical new approach to the fight for equality. Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour is a history of the Black Power movement, that storied group of men and women who would become American icons of the struggle for racial equality.Peniel E. Joseph traces the history of the men and women of the movement-many of them famous or infamous, others forgotten. Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour begins in Harlem in the 1950s, where, despite the Cold War's hostile climate, black writers, artists, and activists built a new urban militancy that was the movement's earliest incarnation. In a series of character-driven chapters, we witness the rise of Black Power groups such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Black Panthers, and with them, on both coasts of the country, a fundamental change in the way Americans understood the unfinished business of racial equality and integration.Drawing on original archival research and more than sixty original oral histories, this narrative history vividly invokes the way in which Black Power redefined black identity and culture and in the process redrew the landscape of American race relations.
Customer Reviews:
A gripping story well-told.......2007-02-27
This book is outstanding! I don't know what I was expecting. I thought, perhaps, that it was going to be an apologia regarding the Panthers. Or, if not that, it would be a polemic detailing how the Panthers "messed everything up". You see, there is a generally accepted narrative regarding the struggle for African-American equality in this country. The narrative goes like this: for a number of complicated reasons, Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation. Eventually, this was followed by Jim Crow segregation and "separate but equal". Various African-Americans engaged in a heroic civil-rights struggle, and they were aided in this struggle by whites (Communist and otherwise) and other sympathetic ethnic groups. The Civil-Rights Era coincided with and/or encompassed an age of general period of civil disobedience which included Vietnam War protests, Labor Union unrest and a continuing feminism movement. A number of solid victories came from the Civil Rights Era, namely, Brown v. Board of Education and the Voting Rights Act. Also, a number of iconic figures, and moments, emerged from this era, namely, Rosa Parks (and the Montgomery Bus Boycott), and Martin Luther King Jr. (and the March on Washington). Then these craaaaaaaazy kids came along, toting guns in San Francisco and following around cops in Oakland. Stokely Carmichael shouted "Black Power!!" at a March Against Fear in Mississippi in 1966. Olympic Medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave Black Power salutes on the medal stand at the 1968 Olympics. In the 60 Minutes special, "The Hate That Hate Produced", Mike Wallace told America that a huge group of angry, angry, angry Muslims were proliferating in New York, and Malcolm X was the head nut. All of a sudden, crazy radicals replaced the politics of integration, non-violent protest and collaboration with that of aggressive "black self-esteem" and incendiary revolutionary rhetoric. As a result, these excesses dragged everything down, precipitating a Civil Rights decline. This, coupled with a conservative backlash, continues negatively to affect the lives of African-Americans today. That's the general narrative.
What Dr. Joseph's book does is blow up this narrative by examining the Black Power Movement as a legitimate movement separate and distinct from the Civil Rights Movement. His book illuminates the import and continuing influence of Black Power, while remaining cognizant of the flaws of its leaders. The book places Black Power within a global context, showing that Black Power was about more than the Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam. (He writes about 1955 Afro-Asian Conference in Bandung and Catros's trip to New York in 1960, when he made a point of meeting with Malcolm X.) Of course, the book DOES scrutinize the Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam as well. Dr. Joseph highlights the stars of this period: Malcolm X, Huey P. Newton and Stokely Carmichael. In fact, this book makes clear that Stokely Carmichael is such a seminal figure that he's worthy of having a separate book devoted entirely to him. But Dr. Joseph also tells the stories of lesser known figures such as William Worthy, Robert Williams, Albert Cleage, Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez. He argues persuasively that Lorraine Hansberry's, "A Raisin In the Sun" is actually a radical play. He identifies the radical roots of King and he eloquently disseminates what Baraka meant in his essay, "Black Is A Country".
When you look in the back of this book, you see that it has a 22-page bibliography. Sources include interviews and oral histories, as well as extensive archival material. It's clear Dr. Joseph has done his homework. Yet, when you read it, the book does not come off as an inaccessible ivory tower product full of incomprehensible jargon. He presents the story of Black Power as a gripping narrative. He shows the reader that, in a nutshell, the Black Power Movement provides lessons for today's generation of activists. When I read this book, I couldn't believe that no one thought to write such a book before now- a book that treats Black Power as seriously as "Bearing The Cross", "Parting The Waters", "Pillar Of Fire" and "At Canaan's Edge" treat the Civil Rights Era. If you want insight into the humanity of iconic Black Power figures and a clearer picture of the struggle that continues today, this book is the place to start.
Humane, full-spectrum storytelling.......2007-02-24
This book is about more than politics. It's about people, people who are indeed political creatures, but are red-blooded people, with loves, and creativity, and petty rivalries, and regional differences.
Peniel Joseph has really served the public here. I hope this book is picked up by people (like myself) born after this narrative's conclusion. By moving beyond the waters of Malcolm X and Eldridge Cleaver, and looking into the arts, and cultural developments like Kwanzaa, and religion, he was actually able to bring focus to the narrative.
It was very refreshing to see Martin Luther King as more than a teddy-bear on the one hand, and more than a broken record on the other. He was in the first instance a minister--meaning a person of faith who worked with people, in all their humanity. King changed his mind about realities, and grew, and related to people with a flexibility not shared by, say, philosophers.
Joseph leaves us with the stories of men and women, not always heroes, and not too unlike ourselves in their daily lives.
My only regret is the book's ending in 1974. It would have been nice to understand black power's interface with early hip hop, and such.
Possibly our last Golden Age.......2006-09-08
'Waiting' is an ode to the Civil Rights era and it's easily one of the best ever written about this period. It feels like a play, characters come in and out of scenes and each one gets his or her due. Joseph is an excellent writer and reveals a number of things that are generally unknown. Everyone should have this one on their shelves for generations to come. Ignorance is killing Black people.
From Dusk 'Til Dawn.......2006-09-04
Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour has something for everybody. For the casual reader who has a layman's interest in American history it's a very accessible view into an often overlooked yet thrilling part of our national chronicle. For the more serious minded it skillfully presents Black Power as a deliberate, complex and multifaceted movement worthy of considered treatment. Like a good drama the cast of characters includes not only spectacular icons like Malcom X and the Black Panthers but also lesser stars like Kwame Toure (Stokely Carmichael) and a host of obscure yet significant figures in supporting roles. To top it all off, the scenery shifts from Harlem to Havana to Oakland with even more exotic stops in between.

Excellent!.......2006-11-10
Very well written. Excellent intrigue! Great plot. ! Keeps you wanting more. THE MIDNIGHT HOUR is one of the best installment of Brenda Jackson's famed Madaris & Friends series. It comprise all the necessary elements for a great suspenseful book, full of danger, and powerful passion. Miss Jackson never fails to deliver! Her novels always manage to capture the interests of the readers. Highly Recommend!
Over the top plot line but i stil loved it.......2006-08-15
Great story, yes the plot premise is very over the top - burn victims do leave scars but this lady is still an incredible knock out physcial beauty, I would to mee her cosmetic surgeon! God forbid a black romance heroine been a down to earth looking attractive woman lol (btw is there a rule that says black women must not have short. medium black hair, always long brown and wavy or straight?). Anyway apart from this and other forget reality plot lines this is still a good read. I have read most of the Madaris saga all in the wrong order , Fire and Desire is still my favourite, in fact I find the friends more interesting than the Madaris family apart from Uncle Jake.
" A Nice Read".......2006-01-02
Good storytelling, not great....but good.
Love in Action.......2005-10-06
I was a little worried at first because it took me a minute to get into the book. Once I got into I couldn't put it down. I finiished it in a day! Sir Drake...what a man! I have to give it to Tori as well. She held her own!
Late in the Midnight Hour.......2004-11-26
Once again, Ms. Jackson does it again! This time with "The Midnight Hour." Action packed drama involving the daring and tough Drake Warren. He is a combination of Rambo, Steven Seagal, Denzel Washington, Larry Fishburn, Jean Claude-Van Dam and Arnold. Oh, but Drake is definitely Drake. I loved the action and the quick wit thinking of not only Drake, but his love and cohort, Tori Green. These two have definitely had lots of action in their lives, but through it all, their love along with the help of the Most High, has brought them through. Tori has kept secrets from Drake, but not because she is trying to deceive him, but because she loves him. However, when all is said and done, just before dawn is the midnight hour. The time when things definitely takes shape. Tori and Drake have experienced a lot around the midnight hour -- some good and some not so good. However, after the midnight hour, then the light comes through.
Ms. Jackson also brings the Madaris clan and their friends back in this story. Drake, Trevor, and Ashton are close friends of the Madaris, who value family and their friends. So, the reader gets a glimpse of them as well.
For all those Brenda Jackson fans who have not read this book, read it before the new release of the next Madaris book involving Christy Madaris and the handsome Alex Maxwell.

Scary Tales for the Young.......2005-09-21
This collection of scary stories appeals mostly to the very young reader. Each story is quite short and simple. The typical story has a short build-up with a simple shock ending like "there was a skeleton at the door." Stories lack the resolutions older or more accomplished readers will want but for the style they are really rather entertaining.
The stories range widely in their focus. The reader meets monsters, vampires, witches, bad fortunes and all manner of scary thing.
This is the first in a series. It has also been collected with the second volume (MORE TALES FOR THE MIDNIGHT HOUR) in another book called TALES FOR THE MIDNIGHT HOUR, VOLUME ONE (ISBN 0-7607-6775-0).
Awsome!.......2004-02-11
The book I read is called Tales for the Midnight Hour, by J.B Stamper.
I really recommend this book to the people that like scary stories if not put this book down wimp! Tales for the Midnight Hour is full of horror. At night it will make you stay up asking yourself "is that true?" This book is better than "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark." I`ll give you a summary about one story. This one is called "The Black Velvet Ribbon" Which is about a girl who always had a black velvet always worn on her neck. She would never take it off not even on her wedding! Her husband always asked her if she would take it off but she would always answer "you'll be sorry." Always the same question and answer. The day came when she was sleeping he pulled the ribbon and saw there was no ending until... I will not tell you the rest figure it out yourself! If you enjoyed this summary you'll enjoy the whole story. The way you can figure the last part out is by locating this book in any library.
Trust me you wont like it you'll love it!

A great book I would recommend to everyone........2002-08-17
'Tales For The Midnight Hour' is a book of 17 scary stories, aimed at children but can be read by any age. I originally read the book after borrowing it from a library here in England, but a few years later, I had trouble finding it. (It was an American import). None of our shops had it and the library had got rid of it. I ordered an import of it from a book store, and received it a few weeks later (at this time I wasn't aware of Amazon).
The book is still as good, I'm 16 now. The stories are very eerie and well worth a read, especially 'The Furry Collar', 'The Black Velvet Ribbon' and 'The Attic Door'.
Buy the book - you won't be disappointed.
For your information, there were some follow-ups to the book:
More Tales For the Midnight Hour, Even More Tales for the Midnight Hour and Still More tales for the Midnight Hour.
Great Even Now!.......2002-08-14
I first bought this book at a book fair when I was in elementary school. I read it constantly, and loved it!! Now that I have my own child, I bought another copy for him, and he absolutely adores it! He loves to read it, and especially have it read to him! GREAT, GREAT BOOK!!! Especially on those dark, stormy nights!!
Tales to tingle your funny bone..........2000-04-07
I read this book first when I was in like 4th grade. I'm now 27. I have 2 copies of it. I read the stories all the time. My finance has a brother who is 11 and he had a sleepover. I went there and read it to them. They were scared, but at the same time were laughing at the funny stories as well. It is such a great book. The Furry Collar and The Black Velvet Ribbon are my two favorites. All of the stories are great however. A Free Place to Sleep was a little silly, but that is what is so fun about this book. Anyone who finds it is a lucky person... I want to get the other two parts to this book, Still More Tales for the Midnight Hour and Even More Tales for the Midnight Hour. Good Luck reading!

A time to fear....
Grace Hart seemed to have it all: a bright, beautiful daughter, a successful career as a judge, and a lovely home in an Ohio suburb. But beneath the placid veneer, darker truths lie waiting. Her fifteen-year-old, Jessica, is teetering on the cusp of drugs and delinquency. And someone is stalking the troubled teenager. Now the police are involved. Grace is relieved--and worried. Is Jessica in danger from a drug dealer who wants to silence her? Detective Tony Marino is on the case. Download Description
Judge Grace Hart seems to have it all: a successful career, a bright, beautiful teenage daughter, and a comfortable home in a quiet Ohio suburb. But things are not as they seem. Grace's headstrong daughter, Jessica, is testing the limits of her mother's patience by sneaking out of the house late at night to explore drinking and drugs. Then a stranger begins lurking around their yard, threatening their safety and peace of mind.
Grace is understandably unnerved by the prospect of being stalked, so the court assigns her a cop for protection. But his presence creates as much confusion as it does security. On the surface, they're as different as night and day, but the undercurrents of a sexual spark are undeniable. In the end, they realize they're more similar than they thought as they join forces to stop a stalker who has the power to destroy all that Grace holds dear.

Skip this one - I stopped half way through........2007-04-03
The characters are unlikable, story improbable and the book is just plain boring! The mother is a judge who uses the title to try to control and bully those around her. Was she supposed to be a "strong woman" or just an unpleasant one? Her world revolves around her daughter - can anyone see a problem here? Let's not forget the horoscopes that warned her of her future. The cop gets involved with the family, and had a daughter who died and would be the same age as the teenager had she lived. Replacement family? No chemistry, no real story to speak of. If you want the twist in the end, then skip to it and don't bother with the rest of the book.

I JUST LOVED THE MIDNIGHT HOUR!

OVERTIME HOWEVER AN ATRRACTION GROWES BETWEEN THEM, ESPHICHLLY AFTER TONY TELLS GRACE OF HIS DAUGHTER RACHEL, WHO DIED OF CYSTIC FIBROSIES SEVERAL YEARS AGO.
GRACE HAS A CHILDHOOD SECRET THAT SHE HAS NOT EVEN TOLD JESSICA ABOUT BUT SHE FEELS THAT SHE MUST TELL TONY FINALLY BECAUSE IT MIGHT EXPLAIN WHO IS STALKING THEM:
WHEN GRACE WAS ABOUT THIRTEEN HER MOTHER DIED. GRACE STARTED TO BE EVERY BIT AS REBILIUS AND DIFFICULT AS JESSICA. GRACE UNEXPICTEDLY GOT PREGNENT WITH A BABY BOY. SHE KNEW HER FATHER AND STEPMOTHER WOULD NOT LET HER KEEP IT SO SHE PUT IT UP FOR ATOPTION. GRACE IS AFRAID THAT HER SON HAS COME BACK INTO HER LIFE AND STALKING HER AND JESSICA IN RETALIASHEN.

THE ENDING IS SO SPELL-BINDING THAT I DO NOT WANT TO RUIN IT!
Sorry Excuse for a Crime Drama.......2006-06-23
** I gave this 2 stars, the 3-star rating is a mistake**
Anyone who knows anything about law enforcement and/or crime scene investigation work will not enjoy this book. The story is about a single mother, Grace, who works as a Domestic Court Judge yet has complete lack of control over her own daughter. Odd things have happened around their home which leads Grace to believe they have a stalker. The things that have happened to them do NOT warrant all the attention they are receiving from the police. The crime scene unit is crawling all over their home over the silliest incidents that would hardly warrant a phone call to the police in the first place. As an example; Grace & her daughter return home to find a fresh-baked cake on their counter. They believe the stalker left it, so the detective carefully packages it and takes it to a lab for testing. The reader never reads anything more about the cake.
A positive thing I could say about the book is that the primary characters were realistic, the romance was not. I could see these two individuals having a fling, but not a long-term commitment.
The ending was a surprise, but not in a good way. I actually screamed, "OMG, this would NEVER HAPPEN!" On top of everything there is a supernatural element to the story that should have been left out completely.
Irritating book!.......2004-03-23
I had several problems with this one:
Grace is a juvenile court judge whose daughter is out of control. Grace's solution is to keep grounding Jessica, which is pointless since her daughter ignores her and sneaks out anyway. Gee, Judge Grace, has the word "counseling" ever been used in your courtroom?
Tony has a bad opinion of Grace from the second he meets her, accusing her of child neglect etc. with no basis at all. Why?
Grace is prissy and very controlling. Grace and Tony were such complete opposites that I didn't see an attraction and can't imagine a relationship between them.
I understand that a woman would want to do anything to protect her child. But I didn't like Grace using her position as a judge to get special favors. I live in Columbus; it's a large city and certainly not crime free. Yet Grace had a forensics team at her house over a teddy bear. Then she got police protection for her daughter, including a cop to follow her to school. Even thought she felt the threats were against her daughter she intimated they were against her and threatened to call the DA if her case wasn't given top priority and she got everything she wanted. Considering she's part of the judicial system she might have realized that just because it's her daughter doesn't mean she's any more deserving of these special favors as any other child or crime victim in the rest of the city.
A bit disappointing.......2004-02-13
I just love "Maggy's Child", "One Summer", and "This Side fo Heaven" from Karen Robards. So when I bought "The Midnight Hour", I was expecting it to be just as good as the other three that I've read. However, it was not. The storyline was interesting, but the book is soooo boring during the first half! I struggled to get throught this, hoping it would get better. The last quarter of the book is the best part, and I thought the ending regarding Tony and his daughter was very sweet. However, I would not recommend this book. Save your money and buy one of the titles listed above instead. I'll have to be more careful about buying Karen Robards books from now on.

ENCORE, MS. Randell!.......2001-09-08
This book was a blast to read! Very well written and totally enjoyable. It is the build up, not the actual sex scene that makes this story work, although, once our couple decides to indulge, there is no room for wondering if Ms. Randell can deliver. What a talented lady! Kimberly Randell has found a way to bring every woman's ultimate midnight fantasy to life. Every single woman should have an instructor in the arts of love like Valentine Tremaine waiting only for her, alive only for her.
Hot and funny! A winning combination........1999-06-04
I'll never look at a bed in the same way after reading Kimberly Randell's IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR. Valentine is a hero to die for.
Way too little danger and excitement for me........1999-05-07
Valentine Tremaine was murdered in his bed in 1848 by a woman's protective father. Now his spirit is linked to the bed and he cannot cross over until he learns some answers about what had happened back in 1848.
Veronica purchased the bed from an antique store. She was astonished to find she had a haunted bed. The ghost is extremely handsome too. However, she is about to graduate from college. One term paper depends whether she does or not. Her final exam paper is on Fifty Steps To Ultimate Sexual Fulfillment. Not an easy paper for a woman who is still a virgin.
They make a deal. Veronica will research his past and help him find his answers. In return, Valentine will teach her the fifty steps so she can write her term paper.
***There are a lot of sexual hints and moves, but no intercourse till the ending. In my opinion, if it had not been for Veronica's stalker and my curiosity on what happens to Valentine when finally gets his answers, I would never have finished the book. To me, there just was not enough real danger or excitement.***
Warm and witty supernatural romance.......1999-02-07
In 1848, the father of Valentine Tremaine's latest lover killed the libertine. For the next century and a half, an unhappy Valentine lives a ghostly life, celibate as a monk as he is tied to the murder spot, a Victorian bed. In 1998, for no logical reason, college student Veronica Parrish purchases Valentine's haunt, the now antique bed.
Valentine finds himself attracted to Veronica, looking forward to sharing the bed with her. He helps her with her term paper, "Fifty Ways to Ultimate Sexual Fulfillment", but is stunned to find his bunkmate to be a virgin. Though he rejects taking the body he so desires, he cannot help falling in love with Veronica. She reciprocates his feelings. However, there seems to be no realistic way for a ghost and a mortal to share a lasting relationship at least on this plane.
IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR is a warm, wonderful, and witty supernatural romance that showcases the talent of Kimberly Randall. The poignant story line is quite jocular due to the antics of the female lead protagonist. Though a specter, Valentine makes a huggable scoundrel with a conscience. Ms. Randell demonstrates why she is a former RITA nominee with this ghostly romantic romp.

Great Author!.......2006-08-29
We have read about 25 of Jack Higgin's books and love every one of them! We recommend this, and all, of his books for suspense and intrigue!
Stacey Wyatt Earp?.......2004-10-20
Yes, it's a little strange reading a first-person account from an individual who resembles Superman more than Wyatt Earp. Of course, since Wyatt's telling the tale in the first person, he's going to be there standing proudly at the end of the story. The only question is, what happens in the meanwhile. Truly, very little happens.
What was positive about this book was its setting: mostly in Sicily. The author does a good job of describing the geography and people of that island. I read it with an atlas nearby and looked the places up as they were cited. I've never been to Italy, much less Sicily, so this part was interesting.
Otherwise, this novel is entirely "formulaic." Good guy bests all his bad adversaries and runs off into the sunset with the pretty girl.
Do "Higgins fans" enjoy this kind of a formula? Well, I'd say they certainly must, since Higgins is as prolific as a spider monkey and apparently has a large readership.
Me, I think I would get bored reading about "vengeance is mine," saith the hero. In fact, I did get bored reading this book, but I finished it (because I'm not a "quitter," you know, "quitters never win" etc.). Is that formulaic or what?
Well, quitters may never win but they might occasionally find a more interesting book to read than this one by Jack Higgins. However, I'm not giving up on Higgins. I'm going to try another book and see how closely it follows the formula. Diximus.
A Very Forgettable book.......2004-08-16
Having come across this book, I thought I would give it a try. Bad choice on my part. The characters are unbelievable, and the reader continues to think of them as someone in the author's imagination rather than real characters during the story. The author needs to 'know' his subject. With statements such as; "... I learned that I acted instinctively like a real professional who always aims for the shooting hand with his first bullet, knowing that a dying man can still get off a shot at him." Really! Give me a break. A 'professional' is not some John Wayne. A professional shoots for body mass and lots of it. The author has seen too many cowboy movies and totally spoiled this book from page 22 onwards. The characters are totally unbelievable. Not worth the read.
An A-Team Gone Bad.......2001-12-31
Stacey Wyatt had earned his living as a member of a small band of mercenaries who hired out their services. Branching out on his own as a smuggler, he was captured and imprisoned. His old pals show up to break him out for a new assignment, rescuing a kidnapped young woman. The mission takes him back into contact with his Mafia family in Sicily he has not seen for years. Then things get interesting.
Stacey finds himself involved in a high stakes game where it is hard to tell who your friends are and where loyalties lie. There is double dealing from many directions. A string of bodies is left scattered about the landscape as the plot works towards a surprising conclusion.
Mafia games in Sicily.......2001-06-17
This book is supposed to be an oldie and a goodie. Well, it's an oldie. Goodie? OK, it's pretty good, but not spectacular. We enter the lives of an international gang of mercenaries on a special mission to rescue a kidnapped daughter of a multi-millionaire on the island of Sicily. Soon we find out one of our heroes has mafia connections, and the story changes character. This book is a very quick read. The ending was predictable and I never figured out the significance of the title. Several times I cannot figure out what causes our hero to act the way he did.

I enjoyed this book very much.......2007-09-24
Several reviewers have already given a description on what this book is about so I will just say I enjoyed it very much. Ryne was a good female character who was strong but a bit of a loner due to her job description as a trouble shooter. I loved the character of Deke. He was funny, liked pushing Ryne's buttons and a very refreshing kind of character. Patti built the romance slowly over the course of the book and it played very well into the overall plot. The beginning cemetary scene had me hooked from the beginning. This will be a series of which I look forward to reading more.
Sucks You In.......2007-09-17
I picked this book up in a hurry on the way to an appointment when I knew I'd be sitting in a waiting room and needed something to read. What a lucky choice!
This is the first of Ms. O'Shea's novels that I've read, but it won't be the last. Well developed plot, characters and settings allowed me to quickly sink into this story without distractions.
Deke Summers is our hero here. A regular human unaware of the secret magical race called the "Gineal" who have been living alongside us for centuries, Deke gets cursed by a practitioner of the dark arts in a particularly creative way.
Ryne Frasier is one of the good Gineals and when she realizes Deke's plight, she does her utmost to get him out of it, even though she's never met the guy. Together they have to figure out a way to defeat the dark practitioner to keep Deke from being cursed forever.
Ryne is known as a "Troubleshooter" - the magical go-to girl who steps in when things start going bad. The opening scene of this book illustrated her job quite well, and I was braced for an action packed ride. However, surprisingly, our characters spend much more time with each other than they do battling evil - which is a good thing.
Although I enjoy the action too, often the development of characters and relationship gets lost in an action oriented story. Not so in this case. Ms. O'Shea does a great job of balancing the two and we get to see our hero and heroine build a real relationship and the development of their feelings for each other.
I will be looking forward to the next book in this series and hoping it's about Creed, another troubleshooter we meet briefly. He sounded like a hottie to me!
A "must" read.......2007-09-15
In the magical sphere of the Gineal, RYNE FRASER is a troubleshooter. She is sent to corral those who are misusing power. Ryne is also trying to stop her former mentor, Anise, who has turned to the dark power. Trying to keep Anise from wreaking more havoc draws Ryne closer to the dark forces than she's ever been before.
To complicate things even more, Ryne is the only person who realizes that a TV cartoon character, "Deke Summers, Private Investigator" is really a human who has been "bespelled" into the cartoon. Ryne performs a spell to free him, only to find out he doesn't know why he was bespelled.
Ryne thinks Deke may have some information she needs to put a stop to Anise once and for all, but he can't remember what it might be. Working together to defeat Anise, they become closer, complicating things even further. Ryne has always shied away from relationships with humans, but Deke know just how to get to her.
Deke hates not being able to protect Ryne from the magical creatures that attack them, but he can't get enough of her fiery spirit.
In the Midnight Hour is a wonderful story. The power of the attraction between Deke and Ryne, the fierce way they fight together, and ultimately the way they discover love will draw you in, keep you "bespelled," and leave you wanting more. The characters are richly drawn, the entire world intriguing, and the ending is definitely satisfying. This is by far my favorite by Ms. O'Shea, and I definitely look forward to her next book.
A Great Opener to A Promising New Series! (4 1/2 stars).......2007-09-13
I've been a fan of Patti O'Shea since I read Ravyn's Flight many years ago and she continues to write great stories! In The Midnight Hour is no exception.
In her first TOR paranormal romance, O'Shea introduces a whole new universe. This story features Ryne, a gineal (magical law enforcement of a type) and a cursed PI - Deke, whom is freed by Ryne's magic.
The heart of the book is really Ryne's struggle to deal with the responsibility of her power and the need to rely on gray areas to do her job. Her attraction to Deke is complicated by her own personal issues and past abuse at the hands of her former mentor.
O'Shea handles the complicated pasts of both characters and the seriously fabulous villian really well and the story is quite engaging.
A great opener to what promises to be a (another) wonderful series from O'Shea.
4.5 stars - A nice little gem you might enjoy..........2007-09-01
Just about the time I'm ready to give up reading all fantasy/romance, along comes a book that restores my faith in women authors, independent thought, and "true love" stories. Thank you, Ms. Patti O'Shea.
Deke, our hero, is trapped in animation, doomed to the cartoon network by an evil spell of Anise, a Gineal turned to the dark side. (Think powerful witch with a bit more meat to the definition). Ryne, our Heroine, is also a Gineal, (still on the good side,) who used to study under Anise, and it is her job to catch the wicked witch (sorry, Gineal), and strip her of her powers.
Quick beginning, Ryne releases Deke from the evil spell, then has to deal with the consequences.
Now things start to get a tad complicated. Deke is again human, has very little memory, is brash, sarcastic, sexy and fun as hell. He's an Alpha male given a beta role to play, which does not sit well with him. Ryne is overly serious, dedicated, more powerful than Deke, and while as attracted to him as he is to her, sees no future between them. She does have the Alpha role to play, but has a beta vulnerability that needs some air to breathe.
At this point, anything I say can be a bit of a spoiler, so I'll drop plot points, and let you enjoy the subtle and not so subtle nuances for yourself. There is wonderful humor, horror, tension, romance, action, mystery and sacrifice, it was, simply, an adventure and a joy to read. As an added bonus - it's complete! No cliffhanger to agonize over, no dangly bits to drive you nutty.
NC-17 for Sexual content (some quite grim, but necessary to the story). Complex and original storyline, well-defined characters, honest romance. STRONGLY recommended.

Steamy and then Some.......2007-09-16
For those of you who don't like explicit sex scenes, this book is not for you. I say no holds barred is the way to go and I loved this book and have become an avid Blaze reader. The first of the three short stories, Mystery Lover, is my favorite. B.J. and Jonas are the happily ever after kind of romance that melts your heart. The idea that someone could have a steamy affair with one of their closest friends without the man knowing the identity of the woman seems far fetched, but Vicki Lewis Thompson managed to make it beleivable. She's one of my favorite autors and although she's mostly known for her "Nerd" series, this short story shoundn't be overlooked. I've also read the follow up to this story "Notorious" and wasn't disappointed. The other two stories in this book were aslo enjoyable but Jonas and B.J. will forever hold a special place in my heart. They couldn't have picked a better author to kick off this naughty new series. Blaze is the the best!
The old west meets a modern day women !.......2005-08-08
This book tells a story of two witches back 1882 and a modern day women who makes her living around other's sexually fantasies. Most of the book takes place in the old west with a hot-steaming cowboy and modern-day Elizabeth with a twist of time-travel. You will enjoy this fun read - take a chance I was hooked. I am off to find more books by this author.
My first Kimberly Raye book - how hilarious it was! .......2005-04-18
I really got a big kick out of this book. The characters were so
easy to love. I thought her refering to the bad guys (until she
learns their names at the end of the book) was darling - Slim,
Medium, & Brawny. I liked how she was a woman who went after what
she wanted, she didn't just sit back & wait for him to come to her.
Being mistaken for Sinful Sinclair definitely had its advantages!
I was kind of surprised, though, that at the end of the book, Sinful's sister just basically threw her hands up in the air & said, oh well! Guess my sister is stuck somewhere else. At least it appears she is happy. I loved the relationship between
the main characters. They were perfect for each other, even if
she wasn't so sure for most of the book (typical heroine).
Intense Romnce.......2003-02-02
This is the kid of romace novel that is not for the timid. I enjoy the love scenes in this novella. A prequel to the Blaze series. I like the first one, Mystery Lover. But the third one, Show and Tell, really stood out. Especially the part when the main female character,Laney, is masturbating right in front of Dallas. Defintely intense!
Show And Tell-Laney and Dallas.......2001-10-18
i read show and tell by kimberly raye.
favorite scene with laney-
when she lets that girl work for her dad. she was turning her away because of how she dressed, and suddenly realized she can't judge someone by their dress.
favorite scene with dallas-
finally stands up for himself about the tiles. i hope that guy divorces his wife. :)
favorite scene with laney and dallas together-
in the dark auditorium when he asks her to show him. that was hot. i was afraid someone would walk in. damn punch. :)
order of favorite of the whole anthology:
