5 out of 5 stars For fans of Liz Carlyle- passionate and complex romance.......2007-08-08

The Lady Of Desire is Lady Jacinta Knight, sister to those droolworthy brothers we've encountered in The Duke, Lord of Fire and Lord Of Ice. Enough said! Jacinta behaves like every desperate female does when forced into an unwelcome marriage. She runs away, straight into the startled arms of Billy Blade, the lethal, charismatic, legendary leader of a cutthroat band of rookery thieves. Horrified to learn her identity, he takes her home. Then, in a cataclysmic betrayal, Billy is caught by the Bow Street Runners and looks sure to hang. The ensuring events are stunning. Yes, Billy is of noble blood - he will become the Earl of Rackforth (this isn't a secret, it's on the book blurb). When his father hauls him out of gaol, Billy promises to marry, to ensure his line continues. So he sets his sights on Jacinta, of course. She's rather alarmed to catch this barbaric, untamed, dangerous tiger by the tail. It's up to her to try and civilize him for Society - if she can. But the book digs much deeper than just this. Billy is deeply scarred from the savage emotional and physical beatings his drunken, abusive, hideous father gave him as a child. He considers himself unlovable and unworthy, a piece of human garbage. He struggles with this notion even as a strong, intelligent adult. Get the tissues ready - this book will blow you away with sheer emotion. Jacinta takes on this lonely, deeply troubled man and reveals his true worth through the healing power of her love. Sigh. One of my favourite scenes is after their initial violent meeting in the rookery, when Billy takes his shirt off to wash the blood from his wounds (!). Jacinta, who's never seen a man with his shirt off before, is transfixed. First of all by his incredible body, and then by his tattoos. Intrigued? So were we...

4 out of 5 stars Book 4 in Gaelen Foley's Knight series.......2007-02-16

Lady Jacinda Knight is sick of being told what to do by the domineering men in her life and sick of being told that she will wind up a shameless wanton like her mother, the illustrious former Duchess of Hawkscliffe more commonly known as the Hawkscliffe Harlot. When her brother's arrange a marriage for her with one of their dullard friends in the hopes of getting her settled down before she can earn a shameful reputation, she decides to run away from home and go to Paris where she can finally be free. When she is robbed by a street urchin before she can begin her journey, she follows him into the dark underbelly of London where she stumbles into a fight between two rival criminal gangs.

Billy Blade is the leader of the Fire Hawks, one of London's most notorious gangs. After running away from his abusive father at the age of 13, Billy learned to live on the streets and has stolen, fought, and killed to get to where he is. He's currently involved in a vicious feud with another gang, the Jackals. He has promised his people that he will put an end to the Jackals' crime spree, and he has every intention of keeping his word. But when he finds the beautiful Lady Jacinda crouched in an alley after having witnessed one of his battles, seeing her reminds him of his past, and all that he gave up to become the hero that he is for the poor people of London. He wants for just a moment to be the kind of man she could fall in love with. When he gets caught committing a robbery, he just might get the chance...

Jacinda has always lived under the shadow of her mother's troubled past and has modeled herself to be the perfect lady to avoid the comparison. Still, she just wants to be free and will do anything in her power to obtain her freedom. When she meets Billy, he shows her another side of life outside of the balls, carriages, and rich upper-crust life that she longs to escape, and he makes her realize that maybe being tied down to one man wouldn't be such a terrible thing. As for Billy, he's haunted by the ghosts of his past, and has become the fierce villain known as Billy Blade to escape them. When he meets Jacinda, she tames the animal inside him and lets him know that it's okay to be vulnerable and that he didn't deserve all the hurt that came to him as a child.

Lady of Desire is the fourth book in Gaelen Foley's Knight series and tells the story of the only daughter of the infamous Hawkscliffe Harlot. You can read it without having read the previous three books (in order, The Duke, Lord of Fire, and Lord of Ice), but it does put things in better perspective when you're already aware of what's happened in the series. I enjoyed Lady of Desire more than the twins' stories (books 2 and 3), but right now The Duke is still my favorite in the series.

4 out of 5 stars A Fast and Fun Read.......2006-08-06

Lady Jacinda Knight has run away from her family. Her eldest brother, Robert, has arranged for her to be married to one of his friends and Jacinda will have none of it. Believing that her family will not listen to her complaints, she decides to escape and make her way to France.

However, before she even gets to Dover, where she can buy passage, a pickpocket named Eddie steals Jacinda's money. She chases him through the streets and alleyways and finds herself in the roughest part of town, in the midst of a gang war.

Billy Blade, leader of the Firehawks, finds and rescues her. After receiving a few stolen kisses from her, he deposits her on her brother's doorstep. Billy, however, is not whom he seems. He is the second son of the Earl of Rackford. He ran away from his abusive father at the age of thirteen and has spent his life surviving in the roughest parts of town.

Billy knows that his older brother has died and he is due to inherit the earldom and all of his father's estates. But he has sworn he will never go back, not even to win the hand of the rich girl he rescued and whom he can't forget.

I can't say that Lady of Desire is one of my favorite Gaelen Foley books. The storyline was sound and the characters vibrant, lively and well conceived. I just couldn't bring myself to like Lady Jacinda Knight. She is somewhat of a feckless heroine, and comes across as spoiled and self-centered, used to getting her way regardless of the circumstances. To her credit, Jacinda redeems herself toward the end when she realizes that the absence of Billy from her life will be utterly devastating to her.

Billy Blade, however, is the epitome of the perfect dark and tortured hero. Despite the past that haunts him, his goodness shines through his actions, including saving Jacinda from her own follies. His only fault of course is falling in love with a self-indulgent twit like Jacinda.

The tale overall is fast-paced and entertaining, albeit a bit predictable.

5 out of 5 stars Great Novel.......2006-06-26

Please read about story line on product overview page, it's pointless to keep at it in every review)

I'm so happy that Gaelen did not allow Lucinda (even though she was the youngest) to behave so immaturely as she could have easily done.
Lucinda is every bit of the Heroine and more, she tames wild Billy Blade!!!!
I cannot say enough good things about Galen Foley, I'm so happy I found this whole series, I'm really looking forward to the Spice Trilogy.

3 out of 5 stars Billy Blade shines, Lady Jacinda underwhelms..........2006-04-26

The year is 1816. Lady Jacinda Knight runs away from the Knight estate to escape an arranged marriage with Ian, who is a good friend of her family. While she waits for the coach that will take her away from London and closer to Paris, she is robbed by a young trickster. Chasing the boy takes her straight to the London slums, where she witnesses a gang brawl. And that's where she meets the infamous "Billy Blade" for the second time (the first time was in Lord of Ice). She had felt instant attraction and curiosity for the man when she first met him at her house, but now she fears the street-smart, handsome blonde with a Cockney accent. However, Billy Blade isn't what he appears to be at first. To many, he is a Robin Hood type of criminal who likes to help the poor and the working class, but in reality, Billy Blade is the Earl of Rackford, and hides a terrible childhood that keeps him from returning to the nobility for many years. There are various twists throughout the novel.

This novel entertained me like the other offerings in the Knight series. It is filled with romance, eroticism and suspense. I loved Billy Blade. He is an interesting, gorgeous and sexy character from beginning to end, but he is especially appealing during the second half of the book. He shows just the right amount of complexity and flaws to make him real and palatable for the reader. And even though I am not partial to blond-haired heroes, and despite the fact that the Knight twins are my favorite heroes in the series thus far, I found him very attractive and very compelling. I pictured the very scrumptious Christian Bale as Billy Blade. Lady Jacinda, on the other hand, is a major disappointment. Throughout the entire series, she is portrayed as spirited, independent, rebellious and uninhibited (well, as uninhibited as a virgin could possibly be), and other than defying her brothers and running away in the beginning, she is docile, ladylike and downright underwhelming. Miranda from Lord of Ice showed more strength of character in the aforementioned book than Jacinda did in this one. The only "spirited" personality trait she seems to possess is arrogance. The subplot centering on her best friend Lizzie and her feelings for Alec was good though unsurprising to me because I read Devil Takes a Bride (book five) before reading this one. As for the setting, I like that Foley concentrates on developing London's underbelly. That to me was far more entertaining than the overdone storylines centered on the ton and its parties and balls. I liked that bit of the novel very much. This offering had its villains as usual, and for once I wish Foley would concentrate on the relationship between the protagonists as she had done with The Duke, as opposed to spending so much time with suspenseful sequences that are over the top at times. All in all, Lady of Desire is middling compared to the other offerings in the Knights Miscellany series. Billy Blade and the dark, slumming streets of London are the real highlights here. One Night of Sin (book six) is next for me. I look forward to reading wild Alec's story.

Book Description

Combining poetic prose and dozens of stunning photos in both color and black and white, this extraordinary book draws readers into the prayerful rhythms of monasticism. The text includes a brief outline of the development of the Trappist order; the history of Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina, the site of these beautiful and evocative photographs; and-the major part of the book-insightful reflections on key themes of Trappist life.

These themes include such topics as solitude, anticipation, hospitality, hope, patience, commitment, the sanctity of work and the love of scripture. And at the heart of the monastic life is the idea of waiting-keeping constant vigil for the God who comes even now. Within this quiet life is the same struggle faced in the outside world, the same need for continual conversion. So while the monastery's values and virtues are unique, they also echo the universal call to holiness heard by every Christian.

5 out of 5 stars A Silent Step Inside Trappist Monasticism.......2007-05-25

Right off I want to comment that the book is well written and shows the proper respect to the community. The photos are outstanding and the quotes appropriate. This beautiful book seeks to express the spirit of monasticism through an examination of one Trappist (Cistercian) monastery, Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina. And it does just that.

The book is written in two main sections. In the first part the author takes us on a tour of the Monks at Mepkin. We see their history and the present life within the community. It shows us a glimpse of a vibrant community that is both living the ancient life of monastic practices and have blended it with the world of today in such a way as to take nothing away from the former.

As we read the second section of the book we see it focus on the monk himself. What is it that makes up a life of a Trappist monk? His work, prayer, worship, sacred reading; as well as how they blend a life of community, solitude and true Christ like hospitality.

This book was not written to explain the monks nor the monastery, but to allow us a glimpse of what it is to see through the eyes of these monks. We have the opportunity to learn while reading this book that that there is a universal call to holiness to be found in each and everyone of us.

5 out of 5 stars An Up-Close look at a Fascinating World.......2004-06-06

TRAPPIST: LIVING IN THE LAND OF DESIRE appears almost to be a coffee table book. It was written as a companion to a PBS special about the monks at Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina, but it is more like a spiritual guide to the Trappist way of life. The author, Michael Downey, gives excellent background information about the Trappist order as well as the history and life at Mepkin Abbey itself. We see what life is like at a typical day in the monastery. The day is rather routine (compared to most standards) and changes only on occasion, but it is in the routine that Trappists believe that God can be found. We also meet some of the personalities of Mepkin and we discover that monks are not people who flee from the world, but actually discover the world by setting themselves apart. Downey is able to capture the richness of monastic life in the book as well as how these adherents to the strict rule of St. Benedict as interpreted by the monks of New Citeaux in France and later reformulated at La Trappe also in France, live an ancient lifestyle that is somehow not outdated in today's world. The material in the book is both spiritually enriching and informative. The exquisite photographs also add the beauty of the book and make it a book that can cause a person to pause and think about God's presence in the world.

5 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL BOOK.......1999-09-13

this is a book for everybody who want a moment of meditation the beautiful pictures take us to moments we never have in our daily life, this book also help to understand more about monastic life, and the cistercian charism of silence, prayer and love.

5 out of 5 stars A provocative meditation on finding Christ in daily life........1998-03-26

TRAPPIST: LIVING IN THE LAND OF DESIRE describes in words and pictures the quest of the monk to encounter, know and love Christ in the ordinary and routine activities of his daily life. Michael Mauney's striking photographs complement Michael Downey's thoughtful meditations on monastic life. A must read for anyone seriously interested in the "imitation of Christ" in the ordinary circumstances and activities of daily life.

2 out of 5 stars Captivated.......2007-05-07

Not one of the stories had a great plot and the all lacked even a little bit of a relationship beyond the sexual exploits.

1 out of 5 stars Only one readable story but that's a splendid one!.......2006-11-25

Most of the stories in this book are a total waste, trying to use S&M (which I usually have no objection to unless it's gratuitous and emotionless as presented here) instead of good writing and logical plots to carry the story.

"Ecstasy" is just plain silly with a smirking "hero" who fakes submission in an implausible, female-dominated society. "Bound and Determined" had too many nasty moments where the two protagonists snipped and snarled at each other; I got tired of them both. "Dark Desires" had a few steamy moments but neither character was believable or likable.

However, the last one "A Lady's Pleasure" by Robin Schone was worth the price of admission - glorious, erotic sex with passionate characters you really care about and wish well. This one rates 5 stars, the others are just goofy trash.

Buy this book used or borrow it. It's mostly going to be a waste of your time, your money and your patience.

5 out of 5 stars *OH YEAH*.......2006-07-22

I LOVED IT! Erotic to the core! Great writers all! Highly recommend it if you are a Susan Johnson or Bertrice Small fan!!! If you are not you will be now!

2 out of 5 stars Depends on what you want it for.......2006-07-02

You may rate this item higher...it just depends on what you're looking for in a "romance." This one is dark indeed, a sort of "how-to" for the S&M crowd. Therefore the stories are completely ridiculous, the characters implausible, the attraction between the characters inexplicable, and the setting as realistic as a child's painting. BUT, if you're just into it for the sex, there's plenty of it here, and all the rest of it you're just going to skim over anyway. In which case, you may rate this a bit higher than I have. I KNOW Bertrice Small can do better, though I don't think this is any better or worse than anything else Robin Schone has done and I don't know the other authors. My advice is: keep looking.

3 out of 5 stars This book was lucky to have Robin Schone!.......2006-02-09

Wow! I expected so much more of these great writers, however . . . .

I stopped reading Beatrice Small's offering after about 15 pages. It was completely absurd.

Susan Johnson, who I normally LOVE, seemed to phone her story in. Predictable and lacking depth (but what else shoud I expect from erotic romance?)

While Thea Devine's tale was very erotic, by the end of the story I wanted to kill the "hero". He was such a jerk and insisted on sexually humiliating his wife.

The only story worth reading was Robin Schone's, and I know I can usually count on her. Not only was the story VERY erotic, but the love was sweet, and most importantly: plausible. This book was lucky to have Robin Schone.

Don't waste your money, check it out from the library.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2005-10-11

This books takes one of Palmer's spunkiest heroines and pairs her with a rather bland hero, so the results are not up to DP's typical 5-star rating from me. Cameron is not a bad guy, just not conflicted enough in his feelings for Merlyn (love that name, by the way!) to create much emotional or sexual tension. An unhappy ending is never even a remote possiblity for these two, so the reader has to wade through a lot of filler before they finally get around to admitting they've been crazy about each other from the start. Merlyn is a delight, however, and anyone who is a fan of Jane Eyre will love how she slips into character in her frequent teasing of Cam. I could have read a longer book with her as the main character, but with him as her partner I was not disappointed to have the story end when it did.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny.......2001-01-08

A hilarious novel which had me in stitches. Merilyn has to hold down a job for a month to keep her loving but overprotective father from pushing prospective husbands at her. Merilyn takes geat delight in confusing and disconcerting the uptight but very attractive boss' son. Some very funny dialogue, especially the talking cloak room.

4 out of 5 stars Humorous!.......2000-05-23

If you like an intelligent heroine who gives as good as she gets, then you will like this book. If you like sparks to fly, both in bed and in discussions, you'll find this as well. The only flaw is that the ending lacked pizazz. In my opinion, this is a keeper. But then again, I didn't like Friends and Lovers. You be the judge!

3 out of 5 stars not one of her best.......2000-05-13

Diana Plamer have writen many wonderful books but this one wasn't as memorable as many of her other books. The characters didn't seem to have had enough depth nor did they evolve much with the plot. But all in all in was a good read to pass the time.

From Booklist: While chasing a wily pickpocket who stole the money she desperately needs to escape an arranged marriage, Lady Jacinda Knight stumbles into a gang war in a dangerous part of London. She is rescued by Billy Blade, the infamous "King of Thieves," who takes her back to his lair until he discovers her real identity and immediately takes her home, leaving her with only memories of their forbidden passion. When Billy is later forced to abandon his adopted identity and resume his rightful place as William Spencer Albright, the Earl of Rackford, the entire town wonders where he has been hiding since he disappeared as a young boy, everyone, that is, except Jacinda, who immediately recognizes the wicked rogue lurking beneath his civilized veneer. Foley neatly contrasts the dark, perilous corners of London with the dazzling world of the city's wealthy as she continues her Knights Miscellany series in another delectably entertaining, lusciously sensual historical Regency, proving herself once again to be an irresistible author skilled at blending passion and intrigue. Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A great story.......2003-04-16

Shane Nichols is the kind of guy that gives cowboys a good name. He'd do anything to help a friend (not always successfully). While Shane is sidelined from bull riding due to injury, his rodeo buddy, Cash, cries on Shane's shoulder that his girl (Milly) got tired of waiting for him and is getting married to someone else. When Cash has to leave to get to the next rodeo, Shane decides to help his buddy by "commandeering" the bride until after the wedding by hiding her in a friend's remote cabin. The only problem is, Shane grabs beautiful Polly instead of Milly. To make matters worse, Polly is the daughter of a judge who Shane had a run in with in his younger days. Shane never thought he would give up his rodeo days but finds himself more interested in Polly than bulls but feels he has nothing to offer her.

This twists in this story are really quite amusing. This was a great book.

    5 out of 5 stars :).......2001-04-04

The last Code of the West series-A Cowboy's Tears was a pretty sad story involving Mace and Jenny, so this book involving Mace's brother Shane was a real delight. Shane thinks that he is doing his buddy a favor by kidnapping the woman that he loves, so that she is unable to marry the wrong man. Only things don't exactly go as planned for poor Shane. Darnit, he thought he was doing the right thing by helping out his buddy Cash. Shane does not think that anything could be worse than stealing the wrong lady, but again he finds out he is wrong. Not only is Poppy not the right girl, but she is also the daughter of a judge. And not just any judge, but the one judge that completely humiliated Shane many years back. Shane hopes his luck turns around and he falls off the face of the earth before Poppy's father gets ahold of him. Shane is also having a hard time understanding why Poppy is so darn happy about being snowed in at this small cabin. The last thing that Shane wants is to fall for Poppy-he has nothing to offer her. Unfortunately, Shane's luck has not been all that great lately and Poppy sees no reason not to enjoy herself while alone with Shane. They both have no idea whats in store for them. This was a great book and very funny. Shane ends up being the kidnapper, but you can not help but feel sorry for the guy. I can not wait to read the next book in the series about Shane's buddy Cash.

4 out of 5 stars Marriage Happens to Other People..........2001-04-03

Anne McAllister spins a yarn about a man named Shane who was nowhere near ready to be a home body or a husband. A freak accident leaves Shane recovering at his brothers house. Not wanting to see the homey relationship his brother and his wife share together, Shane hits the local watering hole. When he walks in he happens upon his buddy Cash, wallowing in the pits of despair. Shane finds out that the woman Cash is in love with is set to marry another man. The wheels get to turning inside the bull rider Shane's head. His scheme is to kidnap the beautiful bride who is sitting in the same bar laughing at his friend Cash. Shane wants to stop her from making the biggest mistake of her life, and passing up a strapping male like Cash. There is only one hitch, he kidnaps the FLORIST, not the bride! To aggravate Shane even more, they get trapped in a snow storm together. Cliche? a little. Sexy, fun and a great read? A lot. Anne McAllister makes Shane's muscles jump off the pages, and Poppy's hair sway in your face. Will love win? Read the book to see what happens!

    2 out of 5 stars A let-down of a sequel.......2007-10-02

    From the back cover:

She'd only herself to offer, but Gabrielle de Perricault hoped 'twas enough to entice the courageous Yves de Sant-Roux to champion her cause. Though should he pledge his sword to her, a greater danger awaited, for this knight could easily breach the wall that surrounded her heart!

Sworn to escape the taint of his birth by the valor of his deeds, Yves de Sant-Roux forsook any binding ties. The Gabrielle de Perricault, a lady of rare sense and subtle beauty, promised something he'd never wanted, yet found he couldn't resist--a home, a family...and her!

    And my review:

I loved Claire Delacroix's Enchanted, so I snapped up this book when I learned that it was the sequel. But I had a hard time believing that this was written by the same author. As another reviewer has stated, the writing was lazy, with tons of repetition. Not only that, but it didn't flow well at all. It was choppy and very difficult to follow. I had to keep going back and rereading sections to try and understand them. I shouldn't have to do that. (I've read Jane Austen for pleasure since the 10th grade, so it's not a "dumb reader" problem.)

The characters were only very briefly sketched, and I never really felt like I knew them. I was never emotionally invested in the story. And the heroine is supposedly intelligent, but I never saw it.

I don't recommend this book. If you want to try this author, pick up ENCHANTED instead.

    2 out of 5 stars Weak Effort.......2006-04-13

There were some good points to this book. Yves is a kind, thoughtful hero. I liked the relationship between Yves and Gabrielle. What I didn't like was Gabrielle...Yves claims to be attracted to her intellect. She does so many stupid things, it's hard to think of her as intelligent. And this author is l-a-z-y; she keeps using the same phrases over and over. Both lead characters' hearts "skipped a beat" so many times I was concerned they would go into cardiac arrest.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2004-12-11

"This is another shining example of the expertise of Ms. Delacroix's writing of medieval romance. I became so involved with the intricate plot and the strong characters, I could not put it down. What a hero and heroine! If you haven't read any of this author's work, this is a good one to start with!"

5 out of 5 stars Hard Luck lady.......2000-11-02

I enjoyed. I have read most of Ms Rimmer's books and this one is a little different. It takes place in foothills of Northern CA like many of her books. An area that she writes lovingly of. Maggie Durrant comes *home* to bury her brother and take care of the family matters. MacEvan Manero, who moved to the area after Maggie left, is our hero. They both are wounded souls but are able to find happiness with each other. The title comes from an unusual place. Read it an find out!
