it was great.......2007-05-15
hot sex scenes, more emotional than her other novels, more sensitive, really enjoyed just the same.
midnight angel (midnight series, book 3) .......2007-05-12
I loved this series. Midnght Man was my favorite. Midnight Angel is the perfect Beauty and the Beast motiff dished up with erotica flair...Loved, loved it. All I have to say is get some girl. It will definitely put you in the mood and your significant other will definitely notice the mood elevation. Highly recommend all three books.
A Sexy Ugly Man.......2007-02-16
Now, don't think I'm being tacky: Douglas considers himself ugly and I'll let you, dear reader, decide from the description of his features if he is ugly or not. Personally, I believe beauty is only skin deep and six-pack abs cover a multitude of sins :) Following "Midnight Man" and "Midnight Run," this book builds on Ms. Rice's tough guy lovers and the lucky, lucky gals who bag 'em and tag 'em.
Douglas and Allegra set the sheets on fire, but there is a lot of depth to this relationship too. You just KNEW, when in one of the previous books Doug's voice was described as this beautiful bass that shocked those who heard it, he would wind up with the harpist/vocalist Allegra, who's friends with the first two ladies who got their guys. Douglas and Allegra are, so far, my favorite of these couples. I think because they share this love of music that's quite spiritual and they know what it feels like to be different. She's not always been blind, so she's still learning how to adapt to this challenge. Doug, in his unique SEAL-speak, helps her learn her surroundings. Comes in handy later in the book, but that's all the hint you'll get from me.
Another tough-guy is introduced in this book to guard Allegra when Douglas is elsewhere. Douglas comes into the house and finds this guy looking dazed and he thinks "Oh boy, he's been bored out of his skull by her music." Turns out this tattoo-bearing ruffian has been charmed by music that he never would have chosen on his own. I hope he gets his own story. "Midnight Massage/Tattoo Parlor" might not sound as lyrical as the previous three stories, so I'll leave it to the capable Ms. Rice to come up with the title as well as the story this man deserves.
I'm sure I join her other fans in saying: you keep writing and we'll keep reading.
really loved it--great author!.......2006-07-22
I absolutely loved this story. First of all, I'm not sure exactly how long it is. I got it in PDF format (Adobe Acrobat Reader). In that format it's 187 pages, so it seems that it is more like a novella than a full length novel. It is well worth the purchase price, though.
This novella is part of a trilogy which is interrelated and features some of the same characters. The first in the trilogy is Midnight Man, where we learn about Suzanne and John. The second is called Midnight Run, and it tells the story of Claire and Bud. I recommend that you read the three together, starting with Midnight Man, because the story will flow better as some of the events in the books coincide.
That being said, let me tell you what the book is about. Douglas Kowalski is a big brute of a man. He's huge, he's rough looking, his nose has been broken multiple times, he has a wicked scar on his face, and he's very menacing. Not the kind of guy you'd want to meet in a dark alley. He is reluctantly forced to attend a gallery exhibit with his business partner, John, and John's lovely wife Suzanne. Kowalski feels uncomfortable in social situations because people are usually so intimidated by him that they either ignore him or are afraid of him, so going to a ritzy public affair is not high on his to-do list.
While he's there, however, he hears the voice of an angel. Pure, haunting, melodic....and he is utterly spellbound by the beautiful red-haired singer Allegra. For her entire set, he simply can't take his eyes off her. Her music and her beauty entrance him. When she finishes her set Suzanne brings her out into the crowd and is forced to introduce Douglas and Allegra. At first, Douglas thinks Allegra is simply shunning him like everyone else when she won't look at him at their introduction. But he quickly realizes that she is blind.
Not long after they meet, a hostage situation breaks out as a pack of thieves attempt to make off with the priceless jewels on display. Douglas and Allegra are thrown together, and their attraction is unmistakable. After the thieves are thwarted, Douglas and Allegra spend a wild and delicious night together.
I won't go into any more detail about the plot than this. However, there is a villain in the story who is out to get Allegra, and Douglas must protect her from all harm as she struggles to cope with her newfound blindness (she's only been blind for a matter of months).
This is a hot romance story with a little bit of suspense thrown in. Douglas and Allegra will absolutely steal your heart. While reading Midnight Angel, I felt spellbound myself--by their lovely story. Two people who for their own different reasons feel utterly alone in the world find something special with one another.
I would warn you that the story is erotic in nature, so there's lots of sex. But beyond the sex, I really felt their romance was very touching. I loved reading about Douglas and Allegra. Not only that, but frankly I find it rather refreshing to have a heroine who is facing an obstacles like blindness. I also enjoyed reading about a strong male lead who is not your typical pretty boy.
I would highly recommend this story, especially to people who also enjoy the work of Shannon McKenna. Douglas is not quite so sexually dominating as some of McKenna's male characters, but I believe fans of McKenna will love Lisa Marie Rice. Make sure you pick up the other two books in her Midnight trilogy, too, and enjoy!
If you like beauty and the beast, you'll love this!.......2006-05-31
In reviewing what others have written about "Midnight Angel," I will not recount the plot, but I will add that I think the reviewer who gave it a poor review because of its format (e-book) in hope that it will be in book format is not a fair review. I personally, after rereading this book about six times, am looking forward to it being published in book form.
If you like "Beauty and the Beast " books, this is one of the best! Douglas is a rough SEAL, used to women refusing even to look at him with his scarred face and broken nose. Loving opera, as well as all kinds of music, he is beyond considerate and respectful toward Allegra, a blind singer and harpist. He has the vocabulary to think about sex; however, he is bewildered and disbelieving about the intensity of his love for Allegra. Most of this book is told from his viewpoint, and because he is just about perfect, it is a pleasure to read. I can't imagine any woman not loving Douglas and this book, unless she objects to erotic novels. If you love a protective, respectful Alpha hero and a lovable heroine, you'll adore this book.

Definitely not the best..........2007-02-21
I love Kleypas, and I've read most of her books, but this one is just not up to par with all the others. I thought it was very "Jane Eyre"-esque with the middle-aged man falling for his daughter's governess. But I couldn't see how the love developed between the two main characters. It was almost disturbing, even, that he was nearly twice her age, and that she was only 6 years older than his daughter. And the fact that he was attracted to her "youth" and "waifish" figure made it a little disturbing to me. The feelings that Luke has towards Tasia seemed more like a fetish or obsession developing into ownership. It seemed like he was trying to be a father to her. The relationship just didn't seem plausible, no matter what the circumstances were.
I think that LK was trying to also create an element of magic and mysticism since Tasia had a "sixth sense" and was branded a witch. But it just didn't deliver. LK barely tapped into that part of Tasia's character. But if she were to get a little bit deeper into that "6th sense", it would've made the book a little more interesting.
And how was it possible that a sheltered, "barely-legal" girl know enough of the world to give advice to Emma, the 12 year old daughter of Luke? Tasia was brought up away from other people, how could she be a "role model"?
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE LK. But definitely read her other books. I recommend Dreaming of You, Suddenly You, and Devil in Winter (my personal favorites and LK's best).
If you like the whole "widower-finds-new-love" plot, try Golden Surrender by Heather Graham. If you like the "child-bride" plot, try Lord of the Wolves, also by Heather Graham.
Not the Good Stuff.......2006-12-29
This book and its successor, Prince of Dreams, were the only two Lisa Kleypas books that I was seriously disappointed with. The characters were flat, and as other reviews have mentioned, the plot took an awfully long time to get under way. I found the supporting character of Nikolas more than a little creepy, especially his interest in the pre-adolescent Emma. Yuck. And then he carries that relationship, not well I might add, into the next book? Ewwwww!
Lisa Kleypas is capable of much better plots, character development and a sense of humor that I love in her other books. Go read the Bow Street series instead....
Somewhat disappointing..........2006-11-21
I have read four of Lisa Kleypas's books so far, not including this one, and all of them have been consistently entertaining, even moving at times. This one, however, drove me up the wall more than once. The behavior of the two main characters compelled me to roll my eyes and let out a sigh of impatience and disgust, not a good sign when you had begun a novel fully intending to be carried away by romantic sentiments. This book is simply not romantic. The heroine fails to raise either interest or sympathy, unless somebody out there *likes* Bible-spouting, oh-I-miss-my-homeland, oh-I-am-so-innocent-and-naive, pretentious young women. And despite the attempts of the author to imply otherwise, the hero comes across as basically someone who wants to get laid, and often. There was no indication at all anywhere that he is capable of restraint, or that he even believes in free choice. Not my kind of man, not my kind of woman, not my kind of love story.
Not my favorite Kleypas novel..........2006-07-30
There are many plot summaries here so I will jsut quickly review the book.
Lisa Kleypas is always great because of her original stories and well developed characters. Even my least favorite of her novels is, in my opinion, better than the average romance author's best work. Having said that, this book wasn't my favorite. Tasia and Luke are good characters, but the book just seems to die down half way through. It seems as though we are just waiting around for her past to catch up with her...it takes a while and is fairly slow in parts. When we get to the part when her past does catch up with her, I found myself skimming to the end. It just didn't seem worth the time spent getting there!
I did like the Tasia's relationship with Luke's daughter, Emma. Emma's story is told in Prince of Dreams which is the only Kleypas novel I have yet to read. If you are a Kleypas fan, this book isn't to be missed, but isn't her best. If you are interested in reading Kleypas for the first time, I recommend "Then Came You," "Lady's Sophia's Lover" of any of the books in her Wallflower series. Those I mentioned are the second in two of her serieses, but they can stand alone and will make you an instant Kleypas-addict!!!
Different kind of hero and heroine.......2006-04-10
Although I agree with some of the reviews regarding negative aspects of this book, I think many of the fine qualities have been overlooked.
I truly loved the fact that Luke adored and missed his first wife. In so many books, the first wife turns out to be a conniving adulteress, but in this one - Mary was loved and remembered for her gentle and passionate nature. When Luke comes to love Tasia, he tells her it is a different love he feels for her. He is older and wiser! Mary is not a forgotten footnote. I think his love for Mary is one reason Tasia resisted marriage (though there were others!). Tasia is complex - is she sweet, innocent Madonna-like or is she a murderous whore? I believe most missed the point on that. She is both! To have survived her own execution and in such a dramatic way, changed her. The old ways were gone. Yes, she did fall into bed with Luke (rather quickly!) but only after the truth of her life was revealed.
Luke was a bit high handed and rough, but I felt Tasia was given a little bite and backbone against him. Side characters were interesting. Although another reader mentions Luke's mistress, I rather felt sorry for her. She was not villainous except to offer money to Tasia for her to leave. Emma was a very interesting as Luke's rather awkward half-grown daughter and I am delighting in her story now (Prince of Dreams). The locale (some takes place in Russia) and cultural shocks in this book made it riveting at times. I was not overwhelmed with the romance, but enjoyed this book.

Customer Reviews:
Romantic suspense with faith.......2007-09-06
Midnight Angel begins with a brief encounter between Madison and Carsten in Germany. With only a kiss to remember each other by, Madison goes back to the US and begins an interior design company, starting a collection of angels to remember Carsten by in the process. Several years pass and then Carsten is suddenly back and wanting to hire her to redecorate his ranch in Montana, just a guise since he is an agent hired to protect her. Her seemingly innocent angel collection is what throws her in the path of danger.
I really appreciated the Christian theme woven throughout this book - Betsy St. Amant writes about faith in a very real sense. The character of Shan added a fun, comedic voice to this romantic suspense. Good job, Betsy!
MIDNIGHT ANGEL.......2007-07-21
"Midnight Angel", the debut novel by author Betsy St. Amant, is an entertaining, suspenseful adventure in the life of a young woman raised in a wealthy family, marked by a distant relationship with an absentee father and a socialite mother. A chance midnight encounter with a handsome stranger sets the stage for the heart of the story; a lonely woman who has never forgotten the magic of that moment in time, and who never expects that the gentleman will reappear in her life, particularly at a time when she finds herself in danger from unknown sources. Ms. St. Amant takes us from Manhattan to the ranch country of Montana, painting a beautiful picture with words, reminding us that our strength lies in our Lord, even when our lives don't make sense, and when we don't know what lies around the next bend. I highly recommend "Midnight Angel", and look forward to more works by this author.
Stretch Yourself.......2007-05-03
On snowy night in Germany, by a fountain and near a clock tower, Madison and Carsten meet. They share a dance, an embrace, a kiss. And then they part.
Six years later, Madison owns her on interior design firm in New York City, far from the father she loathes. That night in Germany never left her heart. She now collects angel figurines as a reminder of Carsten's nickname for her.
When Maddie welcomes a new client into her office, she had no idea it would be him, Carsten, after all these years. Memories swell, passions ignite. He wants her to help me decorate a ranch he's inherited. In Montana. She can't leave her partner for what could be weeks or months to do this, even though it'd be a great project and lots of income for her company.
Later that evening, a break-in at her apartment changes her mind. She contacts Carsten, still virtually a stranger to her himself, and takes comfort in him.
Off to Montana, the trouble soon follows.
Betsy's debut novel, Midnight Angel, is a well developed one. Both quirky and intriguing characters. Vivid settings. Taunt suspense. Her time as an ACFW member and studying the craft of putting together a good read is evident throughout the novel's pages. I love how she let's you know the English translation of Carsten's occasional German statements without pulling you out of the story. I've seen household name authors stumble on these kind of things.
Debut novels are often a hit and miss proposition. Do I spend my money on this unknown author whose story sounds intriguing? Or do I go with old faithful next to it who's well established and which I know is going to be a good read?
Do yourself a favor. Stretch yourself and by this one. You won't be disappointed. It's a short read. You'll have it read in a day and you'll clicking on Betsy's website and blog to see when her next release is coming. Until then, she has several short stories available from her publisher, The Wild Rose Press.
And one day you'll be in the bookstore thinking, "Do I buy this novel from this author whose name I don't know, but the story sure is interesting? Or do I buy Betsy Ann St. Amant's new release?"
Trust me. This will be your dilemma one day soon.
Betsy is truly blessed!!.......2007-04-30
From start to finish, it is obvious Betsy Ann St Ament is a natural. Although this is only her debut novel, you would not know it by the way she makes the story flow like a symphany. Midnight Angel will capture your heart from the very beginning. This author has been blessed with an extraordinary gift and I cannot wait for her next release!
OUTSTANDING DEBUT NOVEL!.......2007-03-21
Hard to believe this is a debut novel! Betsy St. Amant has written such a beautiful, sweet love story with just enough suspense to satisfy even the toughest critic ... and keep us ALL anxious to read more! This is one of those books that pulled me in on page one and kept me turning pages long after I should have called it a night. I rarely read a book in one day, but MIDNIGHT ANGEL was way too good to put down!
I'm looking forward to many more from this gifted author! Keep 'em coming, Betsy!

The World Ephemeris for the 20th century 1900 to 2000 at Midnight.......2006-07-19
This was my first Ephemeris i bought over 25 years ago when i commenced my journey with Astrology. I have bought and worked with many other Ephemeris over the years but I keep coming back to the old faithfull. The pages are big and the print is clearly written. The book stays open so you can easily work with it. As we use our daily these features are important. I have used and recommend this book for over 20 years to my students. the reasons for purchasing a new book was our office was burnt down last year. Now back on the road to recovery we have commenced rebuilding our proffesional library and this book was the first on the list. We have been working with borrowed books in the meantime which we were extremely gratefull for. But I can only share with you my excitiment and joy of having my own copy of this amazing Ephemeris back in our possesion again it has certainly been worth waiting for.

Great Anthology.......2005-10-27
All three stories were well written. These stories deserve their own stand alone novel! They were great. All the stories pulled you in and you hated to see the characters go! I would love to hear more about Erin and Raimi as well as Tre' and Dr. Summer Lane.
Great.......2005-03-09
All three stories were great. Francis Ray's story was about Samantha Clark, a former manager of a bed and breakfast. Samantha answer an ad for a housekeeping position and never expects to find the handsome Ethan Rawlins, a man still in pain. Shirley Hailstock's story is about a woman that was hurt when her prom date stood her up. Now he has returned and she is trying to fight the attraction that still lingers. Donna Hill's story is about a radio relationship expert that has no relationship of her own, when she meets the handsome program director, will all of that change?

Cold Nights, but warm hearts.......2001-01-15
Francis Ray's, "Until Christmas" is a touching novella about a young woman who not only touched the heart of the high school principal, Ethan Rawlings, but Samantha also won the hearts of Ethan's twins, Alan and Alex. Samantha, aka "Sam," was hired as a combination housekeeper, babysitter temporarily, but only until Christmas. At least, that is what Ethan told the twins and Sam, as well as himself. However, it was much too late for all of them to abide by this decision. Each was starved for the other's affections and each had become too attached to give up. The twins, not only saw Sam as their housekeeper/babysitter, but they saw her as a friend. She could play ball and was not afraid of their dog. The twins' affection went deeper still. Although they were in contact with their grandmother, they were still minus a mother figure. Sam with her winning ways, not only because she was a good cook and let them help her in the kitchen, but because it was who she was, had become special to them and they wanted her with them full time. Not only had Sam become special to them and the twins had become special to Sam, but Sam had also affected the twins' dad. Ethan's feelings for Sam were more than that of an employer, more than that of a friend. Somehow, in that short time, Sam had imbedded herself into Ethan's heart. Was he willing to allow a new love interest into his life or was he still shadowed by the deceit and experience of his ex-wife and the deceased mother of his twins. Ethan thought he had a solution to the problem when he reluctantly agreed to keep Sam, "but only until Christmas." However, love does not have a set time to go away. Therefore, until Christmas, turned out to a lifetime of love for Sam, Ethan, Alan and Alex. "Until Christmas" was the best. Way to go, Ms. Ray.
"Kwanzaa Angel" was a sweet remembrance into the past with a chance to correct the future. Erin had been hurt in the past by Raimi, who had reentered her life. Would Erin give in to her feelings that never dissolved for Raimi and become involved in a new relationship or would she revert back into the past? "Kwanzaa Angel" was about the Kwanzaa celebration, but with a twist of love for Erin and Raimi. Good story.
"'Round Midnight" was about the New Year's celebration. I loved the story of Dr. Summer Lane, the psychologist who now has a job at the radio station as a counselor on the air. Her show airs around midnight. It is at the radio station where Summer meets Tre Holland, one of the bosses. Everyone thinks Summer is a snow or ice maiden because Summer stays to herself and does not socialize with the others. However, Tre is attracted to Summer and sets out to melt the snow. Summer also has feelings for Tre and wants the ice to melt from around her heart. However, after getting together, somewhere while the ice is melting another freeze comes along and the ice around Summer's heart becomes another block of ice. Summer and Tre suffer heartship and are temporarily separated. Tre sets out to recapture Summer's love and to permanently melt the ice. He knows a new year will be approaching and is determined to be in Summer's life when the new year begins. So, he sets out around midnight to make it happen. Will Tre succeed in his endeavor? Read "'Round Midnight" and see what the New Year has in store for Summer and Tre. Great story with just the right amount of heat.

Book Description
Old Angel Midnight (1959) was one result of Kerouac's automatic writing experiments in which he would spill his chemically inspired thoughts onto paper to see what came out. Though Kerouac was initially denounced by literary critics as an oddball, his spontaneous twistings and turnings of language rate well with those of Joyce and Stein, and time has proven him to be an important and enduringly popular American writer.-Library Review

Brilliance unencumbered by usefulness.......2005-01-23
Man, this is a hard slog. This is truly a work of spontaneous prose and you quickly realize this as you try to follow any path of sensible thought until you get to the point where you realize `It's not there'. This is not the written sounds of anything that flowed through Kerouac's midnight window, as he has you believe in a letter to a friend. I have never heard anything like that anywhere through any window of my life. This is purely Kerouac's mind at play with words as they pop into his thoughts. There are some beautiful subtle fragments to be found in this work, mixed in with, phew, with umm, all sorts of stuff. It's a potpourri of poetry written upon the meditation of his own mind & quite often very funny. I believe he succeeded in what he set out to do, but that outcome by its nature is not something appealing to most people. Only a hard core Kerouac fan could truly love this book. I read it in one hit. Perhaps the secret is to pick it up & read stanzas at a time, over time. It's very interesting, means nothing, demands concentration & leaves you scratching your head. I liked it but could love it with time. I'd give it five stars for its brilliance & inventiveness but its inaccessibility can only grant it four.
read it outloud.......2000-05-26
This book is about the time the author just sits in his lonely shack and listens to the sounds around.I guess if you just sit and listen intendly right now to all the sounds coming into your universe you will get the message jack was trying to put across. The best way to read this book is to read a section at a time out loud to someone. The result is quite magical. The words somehow all become clear and the visions and situations become real. This is not an easy book to comprehend in the normal manner of a read but hey delve in deep and it becomes a cosmic comet in the universe of your mind.

Very Good.......1999-08-09
This book is wonderfully written. Even though Angel is supposed to be a stand-on-her-on woman, most of that was an act so as to not give onto her fears. And the way Devil was always there for her and see right through it was totally romantic. He understood her need for independence, but showed enough support to still fit the times of the book. All in all, Jo-Ann has given me some very good ideas for my own books.......
Lackluster.......1998-05-07
This book begins by asserting a female heroine who appeared to be strong-willed and dynamic. However, at the introduction of a strong male presence, she loses all her wits (despite the narrator's insistence that she is still intelligent and willful). In attempting to play on the words (Angel and Devil of Midnight), which is essentially the object of the story, this book gave up a great deal. The treachery of the evil was average at best, and the resolution of conflict was very sloppy and rather unfitting, lacking any tension and drama that would have added flavor to this book. One reads the first 3 quarters of the book looking forward to a resolution, yet it hardly deserves such high-hopes. All in all this was not a memorable read.
