After 30 years, Sloan Reynolds is about to meet the father she never knew. Claiming that his ill health has led him to attempt reconciliation, Carter Reynolds invites Sloan to meet him and his other daughter, Paris, in the glamorous world of Palm Beach, Florida. With all the sense and courage that her job as a cop requires, Sloan refuses the invitation, convinced that nothing good could come from meeting her absentee father. But when FBI agent Paul Richardson intervenes and explains that Reynolds is under suspicion, she agrees to enter the world of the social elite in order to help investigate her father.
Prepared to hate Palm Beach and all its inhabitants, Sloan is surprised to find herself drawn towards Paris, her cranky great-grandmother, and Paris's neighbors, the Maitland family--particularly Noah Maitland. Noah has all the characteristics of Mr. Perfect, which is exactly what scares Sloan. How could someone so sophisticated, smart, and handsome be attracted to her?
But just as the two begin to explore their attraction, Sloan's hopes for her new family and friends crumble. Paul closes in on the dark truth about Carter Reynolds and his suspicions expand to include Noah. Soon, Sloan is an unwilling accomplice in the investigation against Noah, and when a horrible murder occurs, she just may be the next victim.
Bestselling author Judith McNaught has all the ingredients for a great romantic thriller in Night Whispers: the handsome and not-quite-aboveboard hero, the optimistic lady-cop, a handful of exotic and unreadable socialites, and all in all she delivers the goods. Even so, the fact that nearly everyone couples off at the end feels slightly trite, and the motivations of the true killer are somewhat unconvincing. Apart from these minor flaws, Night Whispers remains an entertaining and certainly worthwhile read. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien
Book Description
Nine New York Times bestsellers and more than twenty million books in print have affirmed Judith McNaught's stature as the reigning monarch of superb storytelling. Now, she creates breathtaking suspense and harrowing plot twists In her most masterful, enthralling novel yet.
Night Whispers
A policewoman in a small Florida community, Sloan Reynolds knows that her modest upbringing was a long way from the social whirl of Palm Beach, the world inhabited by her father and her sister, Paris. Total strangers to Sloan, they have never tried to contact her -- until a sudden invitation arrives, to meet them and indulge in the Palm Beach social season.
A woman who values her investigative work more than a Dior dress, Sloan is unmoved by the long-overdue parental gesture. But when FBI agent Paul Richardson informs her that her father and his associates are suspected of fraud, conspiracy, and murder, Sloan agrees to enter into her father's life -- while hiding her true profession.
Sloan's on top of her game until she meets Noah Maitland, a multinational corporate player and one of the FBI's prime suspects -- and finds herself powerfully attracted to him, against her deepest instincts. When a shocking murder shatters the seductive facade of the wealth and glamour surrounding her, Sloan must maneuver through a maze of deceit and passion, to find someone to trust -- and to decipher the truth behind those terrifying whispers in the dark.

night whispers.......2007-10-05
I thought this was very well written and such a page turner. It has become one of my favorites by Judith McNaught. I would highly suggest you pick up a copy.
Ummm.....Not So Much.......2007-06-06
Let me add to the lengthy list of readers who are completely underwhelmed by this book. I expected more out of Judith McNaught, because I absolutely LOVE her historical romances; Kingdom of Dreams is on my all-time favorite list. So I stepped out of my historical romance comfort zone with one of my favorite authors, hoping she would help me embrace a modern romance story.
Didn't happen.
Sloan was unexciting, and I was unsure who the love interest was supposed to be as the two main characters didn't meet until well into the book. Then I wasn't sure why the FBI agent was so well-introduced if he wasn't the love interest. In fact, I was wondering when the sparks would start flying between Paul and Sloan when they started flying between Noah and Sloan. Then, Paul is sort of dropped from a lot of the action of the story for a while, making you wonder why all the build-up. Two other characters, who have a much more interesting story, are also relegated to the background. I was REALLY interested in what happened to them, but was left hanging.
I have bought Paradise, and hopefully it will be much better than this one!
Very good read!.......2006-07-29
I have read Judith McNaught in the past, and thought she was "okay", but not the best contemporary romance writer I've read. So I didn't expect too much from this one, just something to read fast and pass the time. But it was surprisingly good. I do not agree with the negative reviews and am confused by them. I thought the characters were great, and the romance was plenty in this book. And I certainly had no trouble foreseeing what couples would form. I truly liked the Sloan/Paris dynamic. I appreciated how the author wrote that, while any other writer would have had them at odds with each other and very cliche. I really felt that this novel was refreshing in a genre thats books tend to all follow the same formula, this one was different. I'd recommend it to anyone. :) Now, I must try her historicals.
Enjoyable- 4 and a half stars!.......2006-07-14
After reading numerous books by this author, I can safely say that she has never written a bad book. Inspite of the reviews, this book was very enjoyable for me and as usual, I was totally engrossed in her story and characters. The mystery plot was decent and the romance, while not like her previous books, was certainly tender and heartwarming. If you're new to Judith Mcnaught, I would suggest you start with Paradise and Perfect and also go on to try her breathtaking historicals. I just wish she would come out with a new book soon!

This story is about a police woman, Sloan, who agrees to visit her wealthy father (whom she had never met) in an effort to help the FBI gather evidence against him for laundering. The majority of the story takes place while she is staying at his mansion.
There are many slow parts in the novel, but overall it is a well-developed, sweet story about family, love, loyalty, trust, and deception. I enjoyed all of the characters and halfway through the novel I knew this book would be a reread. The romantic aspect of the novel was sweet, but I wish McNaught would have spent more time with the couple. The courtship was satisfying, but once the couple got together, there scenes were few and far between.
I'm surprised at the poor reviews. I thought this was one of McNaughts better contemporaries. :) Other good ones by McNaught are REMEMBER WHEN & EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE.

Weak all around, most of all because of its effeminate hero.......2007-09-07
Leslie Kelly's contemporary romance NIGHT WHISPERS features the proverbial heroine-saving-the-hero's-soul act; here, this act takes the form of restoring the adolescent rogue in our perceived "overwrought, cagey" hero. By the end, the hero Mitch Whymore conforms to his heroine's wild ways and makes all the concessions. The concluding 5-6 pages in this short 212-page paperback extorts mooning introspection and paragraphs of pining words from Mitch for the heroine's delight. The chick-lit factor is high, and the hero's pining seemed like forcibly shoving food down his throat and making him choke on it. The book mostly highlights a guy's strong, muscular physique for the female readership's imaginative pleasure; Kelly throws in a doctorate, professorship and writer for good measure. The prose isn't bad and the book did start out in a fun, sexy manner but the rest of the novel failed to maintain the opening's draw. The plotting and pacing dragged after the opening in spite of the meager 212 pages. The romantic tension inherent in the first half fizzles out as if it was stupid to consider in the first place, while the danger to the heroine in the second half, all of a sudden dissipated. The characters are entirely forgettable. Although NIGHT WHISPERS discusses sensuality and sexuality at length, it phlegmatically disappoints in that department as well.
Mitch's endless introspection and words at the end seemed like a choking, suffocating excursion in girlish pining. In effect, Mitch represents an effeminately, fulsome romantic-hero caricature complete with the trimmings of a chiseled, muscled frame and a rich career.
A promising spark that fizzled out...........2007-05-23
You can read the other reviews for the book synopsis. I just finished it (finally) and it left me flat - literally can't remember the main characters' names. Even though it was a small book of a little over 200 pages it still seemed to drag on forever. There was no "mystery" to the "mystery". No sizzle to the sex. The romance had a couple of cute sparks ... that didn't go anywhere. The book just seemed tedious. I've read much better works from this author. I give it a "pass".
Great afternoon Beach read. .......2007-05-21
Night Whispers by Leslie Kelly is a quick romance story. Kelsey and Mitch have known each other for since they were children. Kelsey was always the pest and sister to his best friend. Now she is rented a floor in his house and doing a sexual radio show. Mitch has a hard time seeing Kelsey as the women she has become. Very cute read!
Wow, loved it!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-18
I didn't know this is Leslie's 1st book. It is brilliant. I've just checked her web site & found others in this series. I've just started the sequel to this "Into the fire". It's about Kelsey's brother Nate Logan.
Night whispers has everything, laughter, suspence & the sex is red hot. Mitch & Kelsey are 2 of the best characters i've ever read about.
Smart, Sexy, and Lots of Fun--A Definite Keeper!.......1999-11-10
Don't miss this wonderful debut from Harlequin Temptation's brightest new star! NIGHT WHISPERS grabbed me from the first page and never let go. Between the main characters' non-stop chemistry and Ms. Kelly's razor-sharp writing style, this book is a definite keeper! I can't wait for her next book!
Book Description
In this expanded, revised hardback edition of The Cure for a Troubled Heart, Ron Mehl has crafted a book of tender encouragement for Christians dealing with seasons of difficulty. Mehl points out that in moments of struggle and heartache, human coping strategies can offer only temporary and superficial help. He highlights key Scriptures which give powerful direction and comfort - empowering the struggling believer through God's whispered message that "I Am Awake, I Am at Work, and I Am on Watch." With moving, contemporary illustrations, meaty content, and a dynamic epilogue, Mehl skillfully unveils the ways the Lord's love can penetrate pain and restore hope and peace in any circumstance.

A bit of soul food.......2007-09-26
I bought this on a whim as a bargain book. I am so glad I did. IT is an easy read. I have found its words most helpful and comforting. Ron Mehl was given a special gift for bringing Biblical wisdom to the needs of the human spirit.
If you find yourself frustrated, troubled and alone... you will benefit from this book.
Feeling troubled, read this book.......2007-07-16
This was my first time reading a book by Ron Mehl. I was pleasantly surprised. Although I had bought the book several months earlier it was just what I needed by the time I picked it up. Feeling overwhelmed by life, Ron Mehl reminded me that God is in control, I can trust him, and he will use my weaknesses. At 134 pages this book was just the right size. Also, his illustrations really brought his concepts alive.
One of the finest Christian authors..........2007-04-28
I've been a big fan of Ron Mehl since I stumbled across one of his books offered for sale at a Goodwill in St. Louis. That book (God Works The Night Shift) was so well written and compelling that I paid full price for another Mehl book (The Tender Commandments) and another and another.
Mehl's writing style is so different from other contemporary Christian authors. It's delightfully conversational and forthright and simple and pure, which makes for easy reading and comprehension.
And "What God Whispers In the Night" is just as delightful as his other books, filled with inspiration and hope and keen spiritual insights.
My favorite quote from "What God Whispers In The Night": "God's promises are designed for the darkness." Another golden nugget, "You aren't truly trusting God until you're slightly out of control."
This is a quick read and an easy read but it's simple truths will remain with you for a long time.
Wonderful reading.......2005-08-04
This is a book that belongs in every Christian's library to be read & re-read. It is a comforting reminder of God's help in trying times. I bought one for a hurting friend, read it before I sent it, & have since bought 4 more for gifts & for myself.
Read all that Ron Mehl Wrote.......2004-01-07
Ron was a great man with a heart after God's own heart. He was an example to all who knew him of how to live your faith and how to live by faith. His great church is a legacy but more than that his life left imprints upon the hearts of all he came in contact with. Having said all that, read this book - matter of fact read anything written by Ron Mehl. Today he is in the presence of God - but as you read his writings you will sense God's presence too and draw closer to him.

Don't waste your time or money.......2007-07-30
Frankly I tried reading this because the author gave"What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew" such a scathing review. Unfortunately I still don't know if she's got her Victoriana right as I couldn't get past the first chaper in any one of the three books I tried to read. Romance works only if the characters work, and hers do not. Turgid writing, overblown trite descriptions, wooden dialogue . . .simply awful IMO. A lot of readers seem to like her and more power to them. But, she's so bad I've decided to ignore her review and buy "what jane austen ate" so the experiment was worth the effort.
A Transylvanian Regency.......2007-05-21
At first this book seemed rather similar to "Castle Of The Wolf" by Sandra Schwab: on-the-shelf spinster travels to central Europe to meet - and marry - a man she hasn't met before, a German-speaking man who is titled and has a castle. However the differences between these two books become apparent fairly quickly, although they're both equally good. The heroine of this book is the daughter of a Cit, a man who has made money through fabric making and wants to elevate his daughter to the aristocracy. Money can't buy everything, however, and despite Alcyone Carter being beautiful and with a huge dowry she smells too much of the shop for the English nobles. Thus her father arranges a marriage for her with Benedek János, a Baron from Austria, who can offer her six months of the year in Vienna as well as a title. Alcyone travels to meet him, expecting a slow courtship and eventual marriage when they know each other well enough; instead she finds herself rushed instantly into a marriage, most of which is unintelligible to her as it's performed in an unknown language. She also has to convert from Anglicanism as she had expected but, rather strangely, not to Roman Catholicism as had been discussed in the letters between her and her fiancé but to the Eastern Orthodox branch of Christianity.
There are many more unorthodox things taking place and our heroine is no fool - she very quickly realises that she hasn't in fact married the man she was expecting to. She soon discovers that she's not even in Austria but is now in Romania, a country ruled by the Turks, and through marriage has become a countess and princess too. What's nice about our heroine is that she tends to make the best of things and she is certainly not disappointed in her husband, Dumitru Constantinescu, even if he did trick her into marriage. Unfortunately for her there's more going on under the surface than she thought and her new husband needs money that he thought he would receive from her dowry - which has instead been ring-fenced for her safety by her father.
Of course Alcy discovers the deception and runs away from her husband who chases after her (of course) but unfortunately they are both captured by Servian bandits. There follows some very interesting writing as Alcy and Dumitru try to escape, face dangers and difficulties and also have to reconcile to each other despite their differences. The second half of the book, as they travel to the heart of the Ottoman empire, is very different from the first half at Severinor Castle, but the descriptions of the events and the people that they meet are fascinating. There is espionage, bribery, politics and danger as well as love and loss for our main characters.
This was a very enjoyable read and a change from the standard historical romance set in ballrooms in London although the title of the book wasn't particularly suggestive of an interesting story. The setting of Rumania was of great interest and the author's research has obviously been extensive. It needs a special kind of hero and heroine to work in this kind of book and Dumitru, with his 12 languages and his singleminded nature works as a very good, if flawed, hero; Alcy has finally found the person who can appreciate her intelligence and she has also learned her own strength through hardships. I very much recommend this book to those who like characterisation and great description of place and customs in their books, rather than just romance.

Rumanian Romance .......2007-04-25
This book almost rates 4 stars. I liked the plot twists. From the beginning there was a darkness to the book and my imagination really never had these two characters, Alcy and Dumitru von Severinor, Prince Constantinescu out in the sunlight. I always envisioned them in the dark Rumanian castle, in the dark woods, in dark rooms. Dumitru is likeable and understandable. He is facing poverty and like all good nobles of his time looks to marry for money. Alcy is not quite as likable as her husband. She tends to be frosty and unemotional and for claiming to be a rational person, she has severe emotional tantrums and acts rashly and dangerously. That part of her personality did not make sense. However, these two overcome many obstacles and their love for each other felt sincere. I like the setting. First time I have ever read a novel set in 19th century Transylvania where there are no vampires.
Good with great characters........2006-07-26
This was a good book. I loved the characters and the way the story took off so quickly but then......it became labored....and the story started to slow down and quicken at the end with an abrupt wind up.
This was disappointing for me since this author is such an amazing writer and I enjoy her research....
I will certainly look forward to her next book to experience her writing and character development.
Wow!.......2006-07-14
Alcyone Carter was beautiful, intelligent, and very, very wealthy. In four solemnly long "seasons," Alcyone never imagined she would fail to attract the hand of a titled, English gentleman; yet, she had failed miserably! Now, she appealed to a foreign nobleman. The arrangement was simple: Alcyone's sizable dowry for a title and distinction. However, something went terribly wrong! On the way to her Hungarian wedding, Alcyone landed in Rumania, married to a Rumanian (Romanian) count - a young, handsome, and very penniless count - Count Dumitru von Severinor, Prince Constantinescu, to be exact! He was a deceiver, a kidnapper, and Alcyone found herself very attracted to him.
Dumitru found his little English wife fascinating. He felt privileged to call her "wife." She was the perfect Princess for a Rumania Prince and diplomat. Yet, Alcyone did not spend her days playing piano, or practicing needlepoint, or making witty comments. Instead, Alcyone loved math and philosophy and she was the perfect companion for a Rumania spymaster.
Yet, Dumitru felt outrage. Alcyone's much needed dowry came with stipulations. Alcyone shared in the dowry! Dumitru refused to be a lapdog begging at his wife's table, dependent upon her every whim! He needed the money and angrily and deceptively, he set the wheels rolling to obtain it!
Two months into the marriage, Alcyone discovered Dumitru lies. Awkwardly, she was married and she would always be married to Dumitru . . . until one of them died. Those were the facts. Still, his betrayal hurt and she could not live with it or him! Erratically, Alcyone fled into the night and straight into the arms of political danger and diplomatic machinations!

A special treat in board books.......2004-06-28
These books about Joshua and his family are real pearls. Lovely, soothing watercolors illustrate peaceful moments in family life. A special treat to find such wonderful books that focus on a multi-shaded African-American family. Joshua By the Sea, Night Whispers, and Rain Feet make a wonderful gift as a trio, although it looks as though Night Whispers is no longer in print. Look in your local library, in any event.

I think Beverly Lewis is one of the BEST authors! However, I was very disappointed to get this shipment. There was NO mention that these were children's books! In the future, I hope you will mention this in the description.
A Preview of the Summer Hill Secrets collection.......2000-07-19
These are exceptionally well written books! The story makes youfeel like you also have an Amish family as neighbors. You can learnabout a young girl's life and her many adventures with friends, school, and family. Although not everyone is facing the same dilemas as Merry ,the main character in these books, many can relate to having friendships that are worth a sacrafice. I recommend these books to everyone. It will keep you interested for hours.

Fabulous.......2000-09-13
I loved the way you could see the maturing in the relationship between the main characters. You could feel their feelings build up. It was wonderful. I read the book in 3 days. I couldn't put it down. I felt myself gasping when something happening and smiling later. Great climax as well.

Truly A Good Story!.......2000-09-09
I strongly recommend my fellow romance readers to read this book, I know you should enjoy it.
The heroine in this story is Patricia Ryan, bumps into the hero Mackenzy Carter but called, Mac Carter. This chance meeting involves a community center for at risk kids.
In any story that mixes business with pleasure; well you are bound to get trouble in the relationship. But this story that takes place in Florida provides you with aggressiveness, some humor, lots of intimacy, lies, betrayal and unconditional love from a mother and brother. It also has some moments of danger that heightens the story that keeps you turning the pages.
I enjoyed the illustration that the author shows with Patricia, her mother and her brother Parker. The characters portray such unconditional love that I believe any of us can feel the love coming through as you read the book.
Thanks Ms Love for this wonderful and enjoyable story. I hope you'll consider a story with Parker Ryan real soon.
Ms. Love did an outstanding job on this one..............2000-09-08
This book was great! I enjoyed all the characters..we have all been there with the 'well-meaning' sister friends. It was good to see Patricia hold on to her professional goals, while dealing honestly with her short-comings. Mac was a brother with a purpose...I loved him. I am looking forward to Ms. Love's next book.
Excitement on paper.......1999-09-20
The reading of Whispers in the Night, is not accomplished without stopping and visualizing the scenes, the details are so vivid, Patty's crispness, and determination combined with Mac's strength, business savvy and vulnerability makes each chapter so devouring and the next chapter an anticipation of more excitement.
A definite Read!.......1999-09-14
The book was wonderful, inspiring and so well written. One live thru every phase of life thru it, and can reminice with it. It gives hope to love between a man and woman especially to people of color. the section, where she visit her mom was so vivid and brought back my childhood. The importance of unconditional love, family values, struggles, becoming a stong survival. All, that I can say that I wanted to read more and experience it all. It added youth to me. The sex sections were so tastefully written. They demonstrated two people valuing the worth of one another. All the beauty that the bible described Adam as the first time he saw Eve. Please keep on with your writing and your mission. I shall pass it own. I love their independence with their own goal, yet their interdependence with their love for one another. I could go on-on Mary Yvonne Eaglin-White

Night Whispers is an engaging and thought-provoking evening devotional that encourages readers to enjoy God's Word and build a strong relationship with Christ.

Genuine Artistry.......2002-11-13
Remember when you were a kid? The best part of a book was its pictures-the more the better! Pictures tantalized the imagination as we plunged into the stories.
In the same way, Jennie Afman Dimkoff's storytelling is absolute artistry. With words she paints biblical stories more vividly than cinema. With strings of thought she weaves connections between that world and ours. As an adult, it's wonderful to rekindle the biblical imagination of my youth all over again. As a seminary student, this one book has enhanced my education--adding living color.
As a man, yes a man, "Night Whispers" is more than a book for women. Though written for a female audience, Jennie Dimkoff's biblical narratives contain both a balance of male and female characters and, more importantly, themes that transcend gender. Additionally, its immediate connections to women helped me to better understand women's spiritual struggles. No man lives in a world without women, making it a valuable-read for any man who wants to grow in faith with the women he loves.
Regardless of your gender or experience with the Bible, "Night Whispers" will luminously enhance your interaction with the Bible, its stories, and, most importantly, its main character: God.
An Absolute treat!.......2002-09-04
I am not easily impressed by most books, but Night Whispers is an absolute treat.
It's hard to believe this is Jennie's first book because the writing is so accomplished and inviting. The book's concept is equally compelling. Jennie obviously knows and loves God's word and her desire to share her experiences with other women shines right through.
I love the way she introduces modern day stories as she leads back to the bible and shares observations that are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. The other wonderful thing she does is to give "homework" in such a gentle yet inviting way we want to read and learn more.
Thank you, Jeannie for your lovely book.. From the cover to the layout to everything else this is a must read and reread book for women of all ages.
