Book Description
The Buddha. Rene Descartes. Emily Dickinson. Greta Garbo. Bobby Fischer. J. D. Salinger: Loners, all—along with as many as 25 percent of the world’s population. Loners keep to themselves, and like it that way. Yet in the press, in films, in folklore, and nearly everywhere one looks, loners are tagged as losers and psychopaths, perverts and pity cases, ogres and mad bombers, elitists and wicked witches. Too often, loners buy into those messages and strive to change, making themselves miserable in the process by hiding their true nature—and hiding from it. Loners as a group deserve to be reassessed—to claim their rightful place, rather than be perceived as damaged goods that need to be “fixed.” In Party of One Anneli Rufus -- a prize-winning, critically acclaimed writer with talent to burn -- has crafted a morally urgent, historically compelling tour de force—a long-overdue argument in defense of the loner, then and now. Marshalling a polymath’s easy erudition to make her case, assembling evidence from every conceivable arena of culture as well as interviews with experts and loners worldwide and her own acutely calibrated analysis, Rufus rebuts the prevailing notion that aloneness is indistinguishable from loneliness, the fallacy that all of those who are alone don’t want to be, and wouldn’t be, if only they knew how.

Fascinating insights but still didn't peg this Loner........2007-09-30
I read this book in one elated sitting.
Had several lightbulb moments and saw myself explained in several instances.
Annuli has a biting humor that is wry and made the book an easy read.
But all in all her portrait of the way a Loner behaves falls short.
Her statements were too sweeing to encapsulate at least this sole Lonerette.
If I dubbed myself a Loner. It would be the bubbly loner.
I love people, I enjoy being around people.
I can be super outgoing and cheery.
But then it strikes.
The exhuastion, the wearying repetiveness of interactions with casual friends.
After brief intense contact with groups and partaking in social gatherings, I'm thrilled to be at alone.
Unwatched and unfettered.
I delight in my time alone. I often decline invitations because the pull to read, draw, create and such bask in perfect solitude compells me more.
I'm thought elite, haughty and aloof at times. But thta is not the case at all.
I merely enjoy the company of others when I can offer my sunniest side and appreciate them in the best frame of mind.
Recently my Mother had a mini-stroke. I have sweet friends who would lend an ear and a shoulder to cry on, but it is not in my nature to lament my pain openly.
I find a grace and peace in reflecting alone. That is how I regain emotional fortitude.
But then after recharging my batteries and finding my equilibrium I am once again a social butterfly. Albeit for brief shining moments.
One big kudo that I must proffer is the section on Loners and Relationships.
That was a revelation to me.
I now feel my inate pickiness is justified. Men who are not comfortable in their own solitary skin do not appeal to me. Conversely, since I'm an atypical Loner, neither do completely antisocial guys.
At least now I'm not shocked Im still single.
So in closing, although this book is a worth addition to my library, I cannot find myself fully expressed in it.
But that's fine and not perplexing, because as a Loner most people find me enigmatic.
Pary of One.......2007-09-15
A truly fitting title for the author. A bit heavy handed at times, but makes some good observations of the life of a loner. I didn't connect with the book as much as other loners have, but as a loner myself I am inclilned to be predisposed to my own disposition.
Excellent.......2007-07-19
I loved this book! I thought I was the only weird person who could be happy when everyone left me alone. I discovered it is okay and normal to be a loner. It was a great read and I couldn't put it down until I finished it.
My favorite book.......2007-06-29
Folks, I have about 2,000 books in my collection and I don't think it would be an understatement to say that this one is my favorite. I devoured it in one sitting. It validated and affirmed everything I know about myself and made me feel like I wasn't crazy. If you want to understand that you are not alone (even though you want to be) pick up this book.
By the way, I've read some reviews on here which say Rufus is exaggerating her case. Okay, fair enough. Try performing this simple experiment to see if you still think that after you're done: Go on "Google News" and type in the search term "loner". Ah hah! Many articles talking about criminals who are loners! Surprise, surprise. I think you'll find just by doing that search on Google News that Rufus's case is awfully strong that the world has a dangerous bias against loners. Rufus is not overstating her case.
Also, remember that part of what's likable about this book is that Rufus is writing from her personal experience. If she uses the "us-versus them" mentality, it's only because she's speaking from her perspective. I thought that was fairly obvious but to some reviewers, I guess it wasn't.
Overall, wonderful book!
Entertaining, conflicted.......2007-06-26
"PoO:tLM" is an entertaining read, but suffers from an inevitably conflicted voice. Rufus describes repetitively the audience as being an "us" and a "we", yet makes a distinct point of denying such titles. It's a book about a group of people that is not a group. One can chalk this up to simply being a paradox, but it occasionally distracts the reader.
It's littered with historical, cultural and personal illustrations of her arguement: that being a "loner" is a good thing in spite of it's stigma. Though it's not the best read, it's insightful and unique. Definitely worth the 10 or so dollars Amazon is charging.

Wonderful "Coming of Age" Story.......2006-12-30
I loved this book! It has action, introspection, and wonderful descriptions throughout. To follow the main character from the beginning of the story when he doesn't even have a name, to the end and throughout all his adventures is a terrific experience for the reader.

THE LONER.......2007-08-27
This was a wonderful read of romance, life and relationships!!! I am new to reading Joan Johnston books and she does a superb job!!! I have read The Cowboy, The Texan and just finished this book. You feel as though you are living with the characters and experiencing all the feelings and trials they are. Great story of the families!
Very disappointed reader........2006-06-16
I have read the CAPTIVE HEART series, then SISTERS OF THE LONE STAR series and now I've been reading the BITTER CREEK series. These series lead from one to the next. I liked all the books up to this one, J. Johnston was doing a great job! She almost did a good job on this one, but one thing spoiled the whole book for me and that could have been left out whith out spoiling the story. She has the main male character, Billy Coburn, having sex with a bar-maid as soon as he left town and she getting pregnant. He pays her to have the baby and then he keeps the baby and brings it back to his home town. What happened to birth control? That made Billy look stupid and uneducated. The story tells that he had had sex since he was in high-school and never got any other woman pregnant, so why now? If the woman was old enough to be a bar-maid why didn't she know enough to use birth control? The baby was an unnecessary addition to what could have been a good book. I had great hopes for Billy, he was a decent person with a lot of problems in the other books, the author did not treat him well.
Missing The Adventure Of The Others In The Series.......2005-11-26
Joan Johnston's, "The Loner" is the third in the Bitter Creek series. The stories of family feuds between the Blackthornes and Creeds, and Romeo and Juliette type romances over many years. These are the modern day ancestors of the Sisters of the Lone Star series("Frontier Woman", "Comanche Woman", and "Texas Woman"), which is a prequel to Bitter Creek. "The Loner" follows, "The Texan", and "The Cowboy".
If you have read those first two in the series, you shouldn't have too much trouble following the intricatcies of the family trees. Also there is some mention of previous characters and their roles touched upon in the story. If you haven't read the other two, I would highly recommend those first, to get a better idea of the complicated history these feudin' folks have with each other. This is the first in the Joan Johnston's books, that I felt would probably not stand on it's own.
"The Loner", is the story of "Bad" Billy Coburn", the illegitimate son of the Blackthorne patriarch("Blackjack"), and Summer Blackthorne, heiress to the Bitter Creek fortune, and daughter of "Blackjack". Okay now, don't worry, it had already been established that Summer was not really the biological daughter of Blackjack(see what I mean, it can get very complicated). There are other star-crossed love affairs going on as well. The older generation, has a serious and deadly triangle going on, and "Sam", the eldest of the Creed siblings, who you will remember from the first story is in a wheelchair due to one of the Blackthorne kids, has also fallen in love, and almost off the wagon as well! Whew!, are you with me so far?
So there are a ton of romantic complications, and there is even a homicide to be solved, although the reader will already know who is at fault, even though the characters will try to solve the case on their own. This story though, was not up to par with the others of Miss Johnston's wonderful works. The others in both the Lone Star and the Bitter Creek series, always had some other exciting, page turner, intriguing adventure going on. Miss Johnston had previously seemed to do much research to support the sub-plots. Often even a bit of a history lesson was gained from the read as well. This story had none of that.
Even without the adventure,if you have already been reading the Bitter Creek series, you will want to read this one, to catch up with the family story, before moving on the the next one, "The Price". "The Loner" wrapped up some of the story lines nicely, and was good but not great, as far as romance novels go. I personally prefer a little more of the action and adventure to go along with it.
One of these days, one of the characters will fall for someone who isn't part of the family feud, and that should make for a pretty fresh take. So a bit predictable, but worth the read for fans of the series.
Enjoy....Laurie
The last bk of the blackthorne-creed trilogy!.......2004-01-21
The 2nd bk of this contemporary western series is "the Texan" and while it stands alone, I think it should be a pre-requisite for this book. The series is wonderful with twists and feuds and love and deception. "Bad Billy" has paid a terrible price because of the treacherous Eve Blackthorn. You keep rooting for him to finally get a break and find some happiness and recognition. Enter Summer Blackthorn, a forbidden best friend.
Together they try to weave through the web of lies that have affected their lives. Summer initially is a weak, spoiled little rich girl trying to win her mother's love and her fathers respect. But she evolves and defies them by cancelling her engagement to geoffrey and eloping with Billy Creed. Her father does everything to undermine billy and summers relationship and his family is none too pleasant either! Summer takes the flack and learns to exist in a poor man's world. And she learns to sacrifice for Billy and his son. Although I loved the story line, the author had to repeat so much of the previous history (obviously for those who hadn't read "texan") that I found that redundant and annoying. Author Joan Johnston is definitely worth watching! She has a wonderful way with words and her characters are realistic, fiesty and the dialogue is witty. A great wrap up.
Okay.......2002-11-10
After reading the The Cowboy and the The Texan, I could not wait for The Loner to come out. Having said that it was not a good book especially if you read the first two books in the series.
Book Description
A proud Cherokee Lighthorseman, Black Fox is determined to hunt down the notorious Cat -- a brazen thief who robs from the wealthy to give to the poor. But his satisfaction at finally capturing the elusive outlaw turns to shock when he discovers The Cat is a woman in disguise -- a breathtaking young hellion who stirs his sympathy and his desire, distracting Black Fox from the jobhe has sworn to do.
Cathleen O'Sullivan has no love for the law, since it did nothing to punish the villain who destroyed her family. But a bullet wound ended her personal quest for justice, and if she doesn't escape her rugged Cherokee captor, she'll surely hang for a crime she did not commit. But the tender care she's receiving from the sexy lawman -- and the intense heat his touch inspires -- makes the wild beauty burn to have Black Fox as a lover, not an enemy ... and to surrender to a fiery passion that could spell disaster for them both.

immovable law and the untouchable outlaw make for great fun.......2003-05-08
In 1877 in the Cherokee Nation West, Lighthorseman Black Fox Vann trails Cat, a Robin Hood like robber turned killer when he murdered Deputy US Marshal Turner. At a general store, Black Fox sees Cat dodging bullets running towards his horse. Black Fox follows only to find an unconscious Cat shot in the shoulder. He strips him only to shockingly see breasts.
Cat hears him mumbling about taking a female to Judge Parker to hang for murder, but cannot understand why he says that until he accuses her of killing Turner. She denies killing anyone yet, but plans to kill the general store owner Tassel for killing her stepfather and mother, and trying to rape her. He knows she is too hurt to travel to Ft. Smith for her trial, so he takes her to his ranch to heal. Black Fox wants to believe Cat's cries of innocence as he is falling in love with her, but his credo is the law is the law.
Genell Dellin demonstrates why she is the recipient of the RT Career Achievement Award with this strong western romance. Though there is plenty of action, the key to the tale is the relationship between the two characters who are attracted to one another from the start, but he adamantly believe in upholding the law while she feels the law failed her. The immovable law and the untouchable outlaw make for great fun for readers.

Stone! The Loner!.......2006-11-06
Stone leaves home after his father marries Clare only a few weeks after the death of his wife and Stones Mother. In the final book to the series, Stone meets up with the owner of the boarding house, Annabelle. He loved her once and still loved her. In this book the secrets come out, the family is reunited, meeting and accepting their half brother. The stepmother gets what was coming to her. One of the best series books I have ever read, written by 4 of my favorite authors. I think it's time I read it all over again.
Huge disappointment!.......2003-09-11
I read (and loved the halfbreed by bobbi smith) and had great
expectations from this sequel. It was an enormous let down.
Stone and Annie don't grab the reader in and of themselves. The story itself is one continual nothing........waiting for "pa" to die...and watching the evil stepmother do her thing. There's no depth to the characters. The ending is anit-climatic and I couldn't wait for the book to end. Enjoy halfbreed but leave this series there. I haven't read Evelyn Rogers much but the writing doesn't , at least in this, match up to the other 3 writers doing this series of books. sorry ms rogers.

In Evelyn Roger's THE LONER, readers will find a highly descriptive tale, which will quickly transport them back to the exciting life and times that only existed in the Old West. This poignant tale is overflowing with sizzling excitement, passion, and turmoil and will remain in your memory long after you turn the last page. As his name suggests, Stone McBride's heart has been hardened against the cruel injustices fate has unmercifully dealt to him. Living his life as a gambler, he is unprepared when word arrives informing him his father is on his deathbed, and has summoned for him to return to the Circle M to claim his inheritance. To ignore his father's request, would force him to forfeit his share of the ranch to his resentful brother, sister, and manipulative stepmother. Upon his return to the town of Sidewinder, he is unprepared to see his former fiancée, Annie Chapin. Will he be able to live with himself knowing he alone caused the pain which is present in her eyes?
Four years ago, Annabelle `Annie' Chapin, gave her heart and soul to Stone McBride. What she received in return was enough heartache to last a lifetime. Still suffering from her last encounter with Stone, she is shocked to learn she still has feelings for the man who cruelly broke her heart. Will she have the power this time to chisel away the hard exterior surrounding his cold heart? Evelyn Rogers masterfully crafts stories where the characters are so real they seem to leap off the pages. Stone and Annie are two memorable characters, who finally realize when they are able to trust in the power of love as only it alone would be able to heal and erase the pain of their past.

Idaho Loners.......2000-02-01
The author surmises that Idaho has more loners than any other western state, and he celebrates a dozen of them in his book. Whether Idaho has so many hermits because of geography or luck, it is a far richer place because of them!
Interesting and informative........1998-07-12
The book is an entertaining account of some of Idaho's characters. It is one of those books that you hate to see end.

ANOTHER GOOD PLOT -.......2006-07-25
Ellen O'Brian wanted to keep her farm. She was just waiting for her husband, Dan to return. He has been gone about 3 years.
Jess Flint shows up without a horse, underhanded intentions, and needing a reason to stay at the O'Brian farm.
Wouldn't you know, Ellen's mistrust of Jess drives her to breaking her leg giving Jess a very good reason to stay.
It was very humorous, the pride Jess took in learning to bake and exhibit the cake. Though he did not like the attentions being paid to Ellen at the dance.
On hearing about a jail break, Jess had to destroy Ellen's faith in her husband and rattle her security but danger was in the offing.
I always wondered what part Cassie played in Jess's life and sure found out when J.D., Gray and Dan showed up at the farm.
Now who was going to kill who? J.D. wanted to kill Jess. Dan was trying to goad one to kill the other. Gray seemed almost too innocent and yet ?????
Ellen was devastated when Jess left. Now she was all alone.
Would she ever have the baby that she longed for? A man to love her?
Definitely Recommended -m
Another winner.......2006-07-15
Ms. Banning has penned another intriguing romance.
Jess Flint arrives at the farm of Ellen O'Brian tried and hungry. Her husband abandoned her and her hired hand took off. She offers him a meal and soon he offers to stay on as an unpaid hired helper.
Ellen fears Jess has betrayed her trust but he redeems himself when he rescues her from a creek. He sets her broken leg and tends to her tenderly.
Ellen remains circumspect as she is a married woman. When trouble comes in the form of her missing husband, now an outlaw and killer, her loyalties are divided. Does she trust her husband or the man who has proven himself to be protective and caring? As things escalate, violence rears its ugly head and puts both Jess and Ellen in fear of their lives.
It is a tortuous journey for Jess and Ellen but reaches a satisfactory conclusion as Ellen learns the true meaning of love and Jess learns to live again.
There is a very cute subplot concerning Ellen's elderly uncle, James and the owner of the boardinghouse. For over 40 years, James has loved Iona but fear prevents him from declaring his love. While cute, it drags on a little too long before Iona takes matters into her own hands.
You will enjoy this story as Ellen and Jess cope with the conventions of the old West but love wins out. It is a good read that I recommend highly.

Book Description
Loners describes a unique group of solitary children who were unable to adapt to the social and educational demands of school life. Sula Wolff discusses the nature and origins of their difficulties and compares them with autism, Asperger's syndrome and schizoid/schizotypal personality disorders.
Wolff illustrates her study with case histories of children and adults over a twenty year period, as well as with discusssions of the apparent eccentricities of some exceptional people who catch the public eye. The book shows the necessity of the clinical recognition of the syndrome.
Loners will help psychiatrists towards a realistic approach to the treatment of affected people, both children and adults.

Asperger's Disorder and the Schizoid Personality.......2001-09-08
This book is certainly outstanding and it the only book besides _Shadow Syndromes_ which clearly confronts the topic of the relationship between Autism Spectrum Conditions (particularly Asperger's Disorder) and the Schizoid Personality. While some researchers have proclaimed the two to be separate diagnoses (e.g., Tantam), Wolff proceeds to give a detailed account of a group of children who were labeled 'Schizoid Personality of Childhood.' Furthermore, she extensively reviews the psychiatric literature in examining such children previous to Hans Asperger's account of Autistic Personality Disorder of Childhood, overviewing the evolution of the Schizoid Personality diagnosis. Wolff especially stresses the inadequacy of the current Asperger's diagnostic criteria because it often fails to include minimally impaired/gifted 'Schizoids'. Finally, Wolff expresses her conclusion: the majority of her Schizoid children, although many do fit the current DSM-IV/ICD-10 diagnostic criteria for Schizoid Personality Disorder, would be more appropriately accounted for as having mild Asperger's Syndrome with some Schizotypal traits; also, although there was some overlap between High-Functioning Autistic children and the Asperger/Schizoid children, a distinction was made between the two groups.
Loners: Schizoid or Autistic?.......1999-07-08
Austism, schizoid personality traits, what do they have in common? Are they one in the same, with those who exhibit schizoid personalty traits simply being high functioning individuals with autism? Or are they discrete diagnostic entities, not simply the same condition but only at different ends of the "autistic spectrum"? Sula Wolff provides a rich discussion of people who by many are labelled "asocial," providing anecdotal accounts with children seen in her own practice, as well as a wealth of information from formal studies. This book should be in the library of anyone who has an interest in children who do not seem to fit into society and by those who are interested in the subject of individuals with high functioning autism.

Melting a heart of ice.............2005-07-12
This book is really heart wrenching. Tomas Carlisle is one of three brothers whose father recently died. One of them has to have a baby within the next 12 months to keep ownership of the family cattle stations and holdings located in the Australian Outback. Tomas's wife was killed in an accident a few years ago and his emotions have been frozen since then - he doesn't want anything to do with any woman but is determined to do his part to fulfill the terms of the will. When his childhood friend, Angelina Mori offers to have his baby, he refuses because she will only have it the old-fashioned way (he wants her to have it through invitro fertilization, so he won't have to touch her in any way - he is still faithful to his dead wife's memory), but he reconsiders when he thinks she may sleep with one of his brothers to help them have a baby. What he doesn't know is that Angelina has been in love with him since she can remember. Her heart was broken on her 18th birthday when he didn't even notice that she was dressed up for him, but fell in love at first sight with her best friend (the woman who he would eventually marry) instead. Angelina even tried to talk him out of the marriage by telling him that she honestly didn't think her friend was cut out to live the outback lifestyle (turns out she was right). This only made him mad, so she did the only thing she could - went on an extended trip abroad to avoid the heartache of being a bridesmaid in their wedding. Now, she is searching for a way to melt the ice around his heart and bring him back to the land of the living - hoping against hope that he will accept the gift of her baby and her heart this time. You will almost cry when you read some of the cold hearted ways Tomas treats her to let her know that what they have between them is just sex for the sake of having a baby - making sure to push her away and not let her get close emotionally. By the end, he starts to realize that he doesn't want to let this chance at happiness go, but he isn't sure that it's not too late. Read it!!!
book summary from [...]- She made the bold proposition to get under his skin. And by Tomas Carlisle's reaction, Angelina Mori succeeded. Angie knew that tragedy had turned her friend hard and remote...like the Australian outback he loved. Still, she was scandalized that after confessing her secret fantasies about him, after offering to bear the Carlisle heir his father's will demanded in one year's time, he'd dared to suggest they make a baby...without sharing his bed. Well, she'd wanted Tomas to imagine a better way.
The way nature intended.
Because being so intimate with Tomas might not simply save his family's fortune...but the man himself.

Facinating study of A reclusive backwoodsman. Good description and history of the area. Colorful, and with humor. Well written.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great story and interesting characters. The only thing I was left wanting was more of the story!
Interesting Read.......2005-09-03
This was an interesting read. If you enjoy stories about wilderness survival and man hunts you will like this book. It started out interesting and mysterious but then turned to a more light hearted tale of the Ridgerunner. Some parts of the story got too bogged down with descriptions of areas and directions. Overall a good purchase.
The fascinating life of a rugged individual.......2000-11-22
Amazing story about a man who survives/thrives in the rugged conditions of Idaho's central mountains. Unfortunately, once reintroduced into society he is unable to live by rules which he shed himself of a decade prior. Although the book is fascinating it leaves many unanswered questions about who the central character was and where he was from. Maybe it is better that way though as he becomes a myth or legend rather than just another eccentric individual.
I wish I could have been there.......1999-11-15
A must read for anyone familar with the North Central Idaho Mountain Country (Lewiston, Orofino, Pierce, Headquarters, Elk River). A well written biography about a incredible man who lived his life alone in the mountains of Idaho. A good reminder of the tough life people faced in the early part of the 1900's. If only the book would have been longer, it ended too quickly.
