5 out of 5 stars Everything has worked as written.......2006-02-27

My DH is using this and other books for a science and gadget class with 10 K-2 kids. He likes this book as the experiments are easy and fast paced enough to keep the kids' attention, a real issue with this bunch.

5 out of 5 stars I like it!!!!.......2005-11-30

I disagree with Dixie who had written the previous review! The book was not written for 3 year olds! A good parent reviews the info and suggested age levels in the review section before buying. We have been very happy with these books. After buying one other, we bought this one and love it just as much. These experiments are simple to read and study. But the teach important science concepts so I am as happy as a mom can be...but again...I read the age level before buying the book! Someday I hope to make a list of recommended books...this will be one!

3 out of 5 stars Not all it is cracked up to be.......2002-08-15

I bought this book for my 3 year old son since he has an interest in science. When I got the book I was disappointed in the experiments listed, such as disecting an osyter and fish. Not that I have problems with that, but I was looking for something that you can find objects around the house and more cause and reaction type thing.

5 out of 5 stars FUN BOOK FOR KIDS!!!.......2002-06-07

My children loved this book becasue they had fun with experiments. But my husband and I loved this book because it taught our children science conepts that we could never teach. We used this book until it got raggedy and torn and then my kids insisted on getting another copy!
We highly recommend this book.

My children and I have used this book until it has become tattered and torn. Not only are the science activities easy to understand, they are easy to do and don't require any special equipment. I would highly recommend this book...I loved it so much, that I now have a collection of all of this author's books.

Book Description

Hard-driving suspense and intense passion are the hallmarks of bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann’s pulse-pounding thrillers. In her tales of daring, danger, courage, and desire, men and women of action fight fiercely, love deeply, and time after time raise the bar for adventure to new heights. Brockmann’s latest novel is no exception.

Florida private investigator and ex-cop Ric Alvarado’s life is spiraling out of control. His beautiful new girl Friday, Annie Dugan, is far more interested in fieldwork than filing, and despite Ric’s best efforts to ignore the attraction, sparks are flying between them. Then one of Ric’s clients turns femme fatale and tries to gun down an innocent man. Thanks to quick thinking and even quicker reflexes, Ric comes to the rescue, only to learn he’s done a very good deed for some very bad people.

Suddenly Ric finds himself deep undercover with Annie, working for notorious crime boss Gordon Burns. One mistake from Ric’s painfully inexperienced partner and they’re both dead.

FBI agent Jules Cassidy’s life isn’t in much better shape. For years the FBI has been trying to prove Gordon Burns’s ties to terrorist activity. Now, thanks to Ric and Annie, Jules has found a way into the lion’s den. But in the course of his investigation he comes face-to-face with Robin Chadwick, the charismatic but self-destructive and closeted movie star for whom Jules feels a powerful attraction. Robin’s in town promoting his latest film–and Gordon Burns is a star-struck movie buff.

With Robin and Jules’s help, Ric and Annie are soon entrenched in Burns’s organization, surrounded by killers who may already have executed an FBI infiltrator. Before long the couple realizes that many more lives besides their own will be at stake if they make a false move. As the heat between them reaches dangerous levels, so do the risks they’re willing to take–in the line of duty, for the sake of loyalty, and in the name of something that runs even deeper.

Worth reading, but stop by your local library. Not really worth the price, she's done much better work before.

1 out of 5 stars Overkill.......2007-10-08

I've been a longtime fan of Brockmann's work, but Force of Nature showcases her weaknesses rather than her strengths.
Nearly all her characters now think and speak with the same limited vocabulary, heavily peppered with contemporary slang and profanity. Character voices are interchangeable, not distinct.
Another weakness of the storytelling is the over emphasis on political and social viewpoint. The reader, even one who shares the author's outlook, may begin to feel lectured.

2 out of 5 stars Hit on the head with 'gay is great'.......2007-10-01

I like Jules, I really do. But I felt Ms. Brockmann focused way too much on homosexuality in this book. It was like repeatedly getting hit on the head with a 2x4 that gay is great. It would have been helpful to have the blurb say that this book largely focused on Jules and his love life. Then readers can make an informed choice on whether or not to indulge.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Brockmann.......2007-09-23

I didn't mind the Jules/Robin storyline, they are such great characters, however,i sort of felt as though the rest of the book was really just filler for their story.
I would like to have seen a little more depth and build up with the main characters and a little more believability with the suspense story.

5 out of 5 stars 5 a.m. book...........2007-09-22

I recently discovered Brockmann by reading "Breaking Point" followed it by "Into the Storm" and then this one. I fell in love with Jules - his sense of humor is great and the fact that he completely embraces who he is and already knows what he wants in life is great. So when I stumbled across "Forces of Nature" and notice he played a major role in it I was over the moon!

Overall, the book is fantastic. The humor isn't quite as witty as her other two books I've read - but she certainly makes up for that fact by the sensitive moments in the book (i.e. Robin and Jules). Either way - After this book Brockmann is on my must buy list.

5 out of 5 stars Great for nature lovers and armchair traverlers! .......2006-12-28

Fabulous book! The text is very interesting and educational, and it explains the scientific aspects of the National Parks and their land very well. The photos are gorgeous and made me want to visit every single park! :-) They really show some of the awesome beauty of God's handiwork. I highly recommend this book to all outdoor enthusiasts, lovers of nature and science and fellow armchair travelers. The book also contains helpful contact information for planning a visit to the parks. A great read and a great book to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars spectacular visuals, excellent text.......2003-02-07

This book is a spectacular visual text to some of the American National Parks. The size of the photos, and their photographic quality, are just excellent. The photos are right up there with National Geographic-type quality. In addition, the accompaning text gives ecological insights to where and why this part of the United States was designated and saved as a National Park. The book gives short but insightful accompanying text for each of the Parks that are presented to the reader. The only problem is, unfortunately, the organization of the chapters, and a very skimpy table of contents, and the reader can get easily annoyed with these two problems. It is hard to understand why the publisher made such errors, as the problems are very obvious, and the whole book suffers as a result. It is a beautiful book covering many of the National Parks, with super photos and very good college level text, and if you can put up with the problems of a missing table of contents, this book is a great collection of art, ecology, and the National Parks of the USA. A 5-star for the photos and accompanying text, and a 3 for a useless table of contents. Sorry, but the publisher made major mistakes in putting this otherwise spectacular book together. But I will still give the book a 5-star anyway. The photos and text are just too good to give this book anything less than a 5-star.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Presentation of Natural Wonder.......2002-06-08

Paul Schullery presents a book filled with powerful and beautiful images of fifty-six national parks that have been dedicated to the preservation and protection of irreplaceable treasures. This book shows why these parks are so worthy of protection.

Not only are they places where indescribable beauty can be seen, they have also been formed by unique geological forces. From stunning mountain ranges to arid expanses of desert, these are the lands we view, wander in and learn from.

America's National Parks is a celebration of the diversity of national parks throughout the United States. They are grouped according to the geological forces that helped to create them.

Diagrammatic illustrations, important landmarks, travel routes, topographical maps and spectacular full-color photographs illustrate the sheer majestic beauty of nature.

You will also find captivating information to encourage an awareness of the landforms, flora and fauna. Families will also find information to help enhance their vacations at the parks.

Inside the front cover a map of America shows the location of each park I started to remember my trip to the Grand Canyon National Park and my husband's visit to Denali.

Our Treasured Lands
The Rolling Land - Volcanic and Geothermal Forces
The Broken Crust - The Power of Mountain Building
Water Designing Lands - Waves, Caves and Currents
Ice Sculpting Stone - The Carving Power of Glaciers
The Patient Power - Wind and Water Erosion
Weather Shaping Life - Effects of Extreme Climates

This book contains some of the most amazing photographs I've ever seen of America. From pictures of dripstone formations adorning New Mexico's Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico to Lush Ecosystems shrouded in Fog in the National Park in Washington, these pictures help to vividly describe each park. I remember once having an argument with someone over the fact that there were rainforests near where I lived in Washington and no one would believe me. Well, here is proof!

I was also especially interested in looking up the Painted Desert we visited once on a trip across America after college. At the time, I didn't actually realize I was in the Petrified Forest national Park in Arizona because technically, we were just driving right through and I wasn't paying attention.

This book has helped to bring a new awareness to my own life and also encourages a desire for more exploration. Now I definitely want to see Mount McKinley in person.

Voyageurs National Park looks like a fascinating place to paddle around lonely islands. However, they do say never to skimp on insect repellent. A third of the park is water.

A memento of past visits or an inspiration for future exploration!

Experience the terror of flying at 28,000 feet amidst enemy flak and fighter planes during the winter of 1944-1945. Lt. Clark flew as the co-pilot of a "fFlying Fortress" with "The Bloody Hundreth", the famous 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force. After each of his missions, Lt. Clark recorded a diary describing his combat experience. These diaries are being published for the first time in over 60 years. His unfolding stories provide a realistic and chilling account of aerial combat in the brutal air war over Europe. Several "war stories", all true, provide additional drama and a little humor to this firsthand account of this WWII combat pilot. Witness the remarkable photographs from the authors personal collection that tell and show the story of near misses from flak and the dramatic dropping of 500 pound bombs on German targets during heavy German counter attacks with flak and fighter bombers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Eighth Air Force Combat Diary.......2001-11-20

This book is written by a Co-pilot of the 418th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group based at Thorpe Abbotts, England.

It is his diary of 32 combat missions during the European Theatre of Operations September 1944 to March 1945.

I found this excellently detailed as it was written at the time.
It describes his training as a pilot in the US, the Trans-Atlantic flight in a B-17 from Lincoln, Nebraska to Valley, Wales and flying combat missions over Germany.

Each mission description starts with a copy of his briefing notes which detail engine start, taxi and take off times, target name, altitude formation and callsigns for fighter escorts! Also a newspaper clipping from that day the mission was flown.

Copies of John Clark's combat flight log are included towards the end of the book.

This book is full of photographs never before published; taken of the formations of B-17s streching endlessly across the sky with streaming contrails, the flak clouds over the target, on base scenes of nissen huts in the fog, frost on the trees, aircraft sitting on their hardstands in the early morning mist, and photographs of the crews.

When reading this book, you can visualize everything that is happening, emotions are described and felt when and engine is out, when enemy fighters pass through the formation, when flak burst nearby, or finding that there may not be enough fuel to make it home!

After the war in 1962, 1966, and 1987 he returns to the base he once flew from to find it deteriating even more with each visit.

The only remnants in his last visit is the control tower that has now been restored as a museum and a memorial to those who served with the 100th Bomb Group.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading personal accounts of World War II.

4 out of 5 stars maybe I was expecting too much.......2007-08-19

Maybe after reading "Hunter's Pursuit" I expected more. I love a good romance so that was not the problem. I guess I just found it a bit flat. I concidered it slow reading. I didn't hate it but I didn't really fall in love with it either.
However my parter who doesn't usually read lesbian fiction really enjoyed this one. Maybe it was just my mood. I will still continue to buy her new books.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointing Second Novel by Ms. Baldwin.......2007-06-23

After reading "Hunter's Pursuit" I eagerly awaited this, Kim Baldwin's second novel to arrive. Alas, this was not the same action packed adventure as the first novel. Although "Force of Nature" pulled me in from the start, the intrigue ended a few pages into the story, only picked up three more times throughout the rest of the book, and was short lived. The story centers around a romance between a lesbian and a straight woman. The same sort of romance Ms. Baldwin wrote about in "Hunter's Pursuit," but which was a much smaller focus of the first novel. The 'straight woman who had a lousy marriage and therefore falls for the first lesbian that comes along' storyline gives the impression that it's possible to "turn" someone gay. It is not. It also gives the impression that women become lesbians because men threated them deplorably. That is also not true. Frankly, I'm not only surprised by this line of romance by a lesbian author but also a bit peeved by it. Now, besides the fact that the romance is implausible, the story itself, which is set against a back drop of a volunteer fire department, had the potential of the same exciting exploits as the first novel, but fell drastically short.

I did give it four stars however, because Ms. Baldwin is an excellent storyteller. It doesn't deserve five stars simply because she can do better.

5 out of 5 stars Baldwin = Action.......2006-07-31

I thought Baldwin's first novel was great! Her second one is just as good, but takes different turns.

Destiny is a strange thing.

Fantastic read!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining! Dramatic!.......2006-07-28

Gable McCoy, volunteer firefighter, answers a call for rescue after a tornado struck. Local music teacher, Erin Richards survived the destruction, though she is now trapped under what is left of her home.

Disheartened to learn she is unable to free Erin from the wreckage, Gable steadfastedly refuses to leave her until additional help can arrive. As the night passes, the two women begin to learn about each other and a tentative friendship is formed. Regretfully Gable has to leave when called to respond to another disaster and is unable to return to Erin's. An action which seperates the two women for quite some time.

As Gable goes about her daily life, Erin is constantly in her thoughts. Along with regret for never having gotten to meet Erin in person. Unbenownst to Gable, Erin has been on a mission to find her. A fact that thoroughly pleases Gable and sends her on one of her own to find Erin. A task that soon proves insurmountable and without the hoped for outcome. More time passes and Erin is still nowhere to be found. Why? What happened to her? Has Gable lost what she hoped would be a friend?

Just as Gable has resigned herself to her loss, she learns there is a new rookie at the fire department. Guess whom it turns out to be? Erin! Overjoyed, the two women are thrilled to finally meet face-to-face and set off in pursuit of the friendship began so many months ago.

However, it's not long before Gable realizes she's in trouble. She has new feelings for Erin. And for once in her life, she's unsure of what to do. Erin was married at one time so she's straight...or is she? As Gable tries to figure out the answer it seems Mother Nature has her own agenda regarding the two women. Will Mother Nature win or will Fate step in and allow both women to realize their true feelings for each other? Allow them a chance at a life together? Or will she win in an act gone rampant and claim them both?

Kim Baldwin, first novel Hunter's Pursuit, offered readers a dramatic, suspenseful tale. Force of Nature, the second book by this talented writer, once again offers readers more of the same, while inserting just the right amount of romance into the mix. Along with a new novel released this year, Whitewater Rendezvous, Kim also provided `intriguing' works in two anthologies: Stolen Moments: Erotic Interludes 2 and Lessons in Love: Erotic Interludes 3. Her next book, Flight Risk, due out in 2007 is surely to be another great offering to a very appreciative reading audience.

5 out of 5 stars A Force to Be Reckoned With.......2006-06-28

Gable is both a pharmacist and a volunteer firefighter. When she is called out to check on residents during a weather event, she is caught up in a tornado. After that, she continues to check on the other houses in her sector and finds a survivor in one of them, but can't get her out of the basement where she is trapped without help, which won't arrive until morning. Gable stays with the woman, Erin, all night, and they talk the night away. Gable finds herself falling for the woman, but the woman is straight. The rest of the story is how Gable deals with Erin.

Baldwin has written an outstanding action/romance. Her descriptions of the events the volunteer firefighters are called to add tension to the story. And the reader is able to feel the stillness just before the tornado hits, the heat and smoke from the fire, and icy coldness of a nearly frozen pond.

Baldwin also has plenty of humor in this outing. Gable's trip to the mall with Erin to shop for clothes and a bed is laugh-out-loud funny. There is humor through out the story as Gable has to deal with all the situations she is confronted with in being Erin's friend.

Baldwin is one of the best story tellers writing today - regardless of the genre. Her books are well written, well plotted, and the characters are well developed. She is one of those writers who you move to the top of your favorite author list and eagerly await her next book which never comes soon enough.

This is an excellent book reviewing the amazing Doctors way of using his Ostopathic training. It is a profound reason to consider Alternative Medicine over the oft accepted Allopathic way. A most enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for people seeking outside of the mainstream.......2006-12-08

A friend of mine who is a massage therapist and is exploring cranio-sacral work gave me this book. I have had pains in my lower back and neck for several years now; i've also been through some painful events 20 years ago, and again 10 years ago with the loss of my respective parents. My current life is very busy with famile (children), work and projects and emotionally difficult at times with a strained relationship with my husband. Overall though I'm a positive and upbeat individual believing in the spiritual and soulful nature of humans, beyond just mind and body. I've been more and more interested over the years in the relationship between body, mind and spirit since the death of my mom which has been a very difficult and painful event for me at a time that I was just starting in life (I wasn't 20 yet).
I am considering seeking treatment with a DO for my back and neck pains, and reading this book has emphasized the importance for leading a balance life and not just 'patching' some areas with perhaps a visit to the chiropractor's office that will mostly focus on the spine or taking muscle relaxant medicine or simple pain medicine. This is a great book, with a lot of food for thoughts and practical exercises for anyone to do. I am thankful to my friend for giving me this very valuable book and wish that I would have received it while Dr Fulford was still alive so that I could have thanked him for giving this testimony to us.

4 out of 5 stars Very good opener on alternative medicine.......2004-03-29

The reviews explain this short book very well. I really enjoyed the first few chapters. His transition into more philosophical healing ideas in the later chapters didn't do as much for me, but if your a fan of Weil or even Chopra you'll appreciate them.

Dr. Fulton really makes the reader consider Osteopathy as a medical alternative.

    5 out of 5 stars A great book for open-minded readers.......2001-01-23

This is a must read for anyone interested in non-conventional medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle, noninvasive, effective.......2000-12-29

Medicine has taken a lot of turns turns away from effective treatments (and this is why the medical profession had to admit in June of 2000 doctors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S.) but there has never been any excuse for turning away from a safe, gentle treatment that even if it couldn't help some certainly couldn't hurt any. The stories in this book are amazing. It is a good, indeed wonderful thing are more and more doctors are turning toward "alternative" medicine (which actually is a bit of a misnomer--"modern" medicine is the alternative, mostly to good health). I guess many doctors consider it easier--and more profitable--to prescribe often dangerous drugs as bandaids rather than take the time and patience to learn treatments such as Fulford's. What a shame, and what a disgrace.

    Book Description

Why do women stabilize our societies? Why can we enjoy and understand Shakespeare? Why are fruitflies uniform? Why do omnivorous eating habits aid our survival? Why is Mona Lisa’s smile beautiful? – Is there any answer to these questions? This book shows that the statement: "weak links stabilize complex systems" holds the answers to all of the surprising questions above. The author (recipient of several distinguished science communication prizes) uses weak (low affinity, low probability) interactions as a thread to introduce a vast variety of networks from proteins to ecosystems. Many people, from Nobel Laureates to high-school students have helped to make the book understandable to all interested readers. This unique book and the ideas it develops will have a significant impact on many, seemingly diverse, fields of study.

5 out of 5 stars Primer on real-life networks with a theme .......2007-02-02

If you ever needed another good reason to value your grandmother even more, you'll find the answer in "Weak links".

Structurally, his book starts with an exposition on network theory and
terminology, then the application and discussion of these concepts to
real-life complex systems on many scales and applied to many domains (physical, natural, technological, social). His main point is, as the reviewer noted above, that 'weak' links (weak: additional/removal does not statistically affect the average of some metric) stabilize systems.

The book has thorough footnotes, one can delve as deep as one would like
into the professional papers. In addition, Csermely is an honest scholar - he shows his hands when there is mere speculation (you have to see the book's unique pictograms to appreciate the effects)

After pouring through several alternatives, I have adopted this book as a
textbook for my Science of Networks class (I'm CS fac at an elite US liberal arts school), and I recommend it to anyone without hesitation for a readable, and learned exposition.

I only have two or three caveats from a specialist's point of view: The
phenomenological discovery of power laws in complex systems is not unusual
and may not be evidence of any SF properties. Scale-free is an abused
term, and I wish the controversy about it were explained a bit more. Also, from a modelling point of view, I wish Doyle and Carlson's work on HOT systems were discussed in more depth.

But these are minor points, relatively speaking. This is a gem of a book:
erudite, humane, funny, accessible and thoroughly fascinating. On every
page, there are delights that lead down new intellectual paths.

Csermely did a great service to pedagogy and to this budding science with
this magisterial survey. Outstanding in its ease of access for intelligent
undergraduates and commendable for intellectual honesty - I wish more
books (textbooks and otherwise) were written this way.

5 out of 5 stars Weak Links Stabilize Complex Systems.......2006-05-13

    It is an intriguing concept.

Weak links, invisible in many networks, are critical to its stability. In this book, Peter Csermely shows that all networks, from the universe to molecules are governed by the same principles. Regardless of the system -- atoms, cells, companies, web pages or countries -- surprisingly, the weak links stabilize each.

Csermely, a professor at Semmelweis University in Budapest, a former Fogarty Fellow at Harvard University, is a molecular chaperones specialist. In 2003, he became fascinated by the concept of affinity -- a network's stabilizing components of must have weak links to the other components. These weak links act as hubs. Attack the hubs; disrupt the network.

Csermely demonstrates the concept hold true in field after field. The professor begins his study with a discussion of the Granovetter study of a job search and then proceeds to describe network dynamics. By chapter four, the reader is ready to be introduced to the concept of weak links as universal stabilizers. Then, the professor conducts a network tour ranging from macromolecules to the planet earth. Finally he ends with a discussion of weak links, stability landscapes and game theory.

Surprisingly, his book is understandable, even to non-academics. It is loaded with gems that can be applied to the reader's networks and relationships.

This is not a book I would have ever picked up on my own. Thankfully, Professor Csermely sent me an advanced copy. It is a unique book that takes a thorough look at an intriguing concept.

    Book Description

This book is the culmination of all of Callahan's previous works and will certainly be his most popular book to date and a classic for years to come. Quite frankly, the author considers this his most important work ever, as he believes an understanding of paramagnetism — and its practical integration into farming — can save agriculture worldwide.

In this one, beautiful little book, Callahan lays out a lifetime of research into low-frequency forces in nature and his discoveries regarding the force of paramagnetism and the amazing effects it has upon soils, plants and people. Join Phil Callahan as schooling, research, life experiences, insight and inspiration come together for the benefit of humankind. Amply illustrated by the author.

amazingly simple outline of the author's ideas, I recommend it for it's direct approach!

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by Callahan.......2002-04-06

If you are growing anything in soil you should buy this book. As mentioned, Paramagnetism is Yang and Diamagnetism is Yin. Plants are diamagnetic, when measured on a paramagnetic meter, and require paramagnetic soil to be healthy and strong. Ultimately, paramagnetic material is usually silica based rock with small amounts of iron oxide (approx.12%). But not all iron oxide is paramagnetic. As explained in many of Callahan's books, paramagnetism is essential for the healthy growth of friendly bacteria and therefore crops. Do yourself a favour and educate yourself with this book and Nature's Silent Music also by Callahan

    5 out of 5 stars Practical Application........1998-09-23

Green Gold has integrated the Callahan Recognitions with homeopathy, nutrition, and paramagnetic growing into a total approach to Houseplants, Gardening, Horticulture & Agriculture. We highly recommend buying this book, a small Green Gold houseplant formula, and watch this amazing book in action in your own home. Dr. Callahan's work is used extensively in sustainable natural growing circles. These principles have been used in China for milleniums and are know there as the Yen & the Yang and the Chi of Growing. The medical and agricultural applications are a major breakthrough and just waiting for global debut.
