Movie fans can argue the merits of Rocky vs. Rambo, but no one can accuse Sylvester Stallone of being a couch potato. In Sly Moves, Stallone recounts the training methods that turned him into one of the true Hollywood hard-bodies of all time, tailoring the best and worst of what he's learned from forty years in the gym and testing trendy diets into a simple (3-hour-a-week) workout/eating program anyone can follow.
Stallone mixes in plenty of personal tales from his storied career along with practical advice, including a three-day look inside the life of an action hero approaching age 60: what he eats, when he works out, what famous people he bumps into at his private Beverly Hills gym and the L.A. hot spots where he does dinner. Sly might help you tighten up those abs with three kinds of crunches, but odds are the new six pack won't get you a table next to him at Spago. Still, all the trappings of celebrity aside, you only have to check out the photos of him demonstrating his "Rambo pulldowns," "Rocky chins," or other exercises ("moves") he recommends to see he knows a thing or two about staying fit. As for how to "gain will power" and "live your dream," you could do a lot worse than listen to a guy of humble beginnings who willed himself into everything he ever dreamed of becomingone hammer curl at a time. --Patrick Jennings
Book Description
Are you ready to be a contender? Sylvester Stallone's action–oriented program for getting fit and eating right is also a revealing portrait of one of Hollywood's biggest stars.
Sly Moves is more than just a handbook on fitness and nutrition. It's a provocative and candid inside look at the trials and triumphs of one of Hollywood's most famous stars. Throughout his career, Sly has always been body conscious, and as he experimented with intense training methods for various films, he has learned – often the hard way – what works and what definitely doesn't. His goal here is to help readers change harmful fitness habits, learn to counter reckless eating, and appreciate who they are even when they don't feel much like action heroes.
Part 1 is a history of Sylvester Stallone's physique, as the Rocky star shares stories about his being bullied as a child, finding comfort and strength at the gym, and then later, the wild ride of fad diets, crash–training regimens and workout disasters that fringed on obsession.
Part 2, The Sly Moves workout, outlines four exercise programs: classic, advanced, women's and hardcore. The workouts only require a commitment of about three hours a week (exactly the same amount of time Sly works out).
The Sly Moves eating plan (Part 3) is Sly's nutrition guide, highlighted by a unique meal plan for a lifetime of good eating.
Part 4 gives Sly an opportunity to inspire and encourage readers to make Sly Moves part of a long–term picture of health, fitness and wellbeing, with tips on everything from keeping goals and relaxation techniques to lessons learned from The Contender.

awesome.......2007-04-18
how else are you going to learn how to look like rambo? this combined with arnold's encyclopedia of bodybuilding is perfect.
Sly Moves is pure inspiration.......2007-04-17
This is a down to earth book. Stallone writes in a simple straight forward style that is very clear and easy to follow and read. He's one of Hollywood's best writers and should go down in history as one of our great national treasures. I'm sure philadelphia would agree. His workout format is truly inspiring as well as all the difficulties he's had to overcome to master his own challenges and bring his body into discipline. I really like the book and when I bought it for me, my husband picked it up and couldn't put it down. There are tons of pictures and advice as well as behind the scenes every day life stuff he talks about here and there. I've worked hard at discovering for myself what works and what doesn't work and this book only reaffirmed lots of the good habits and conclusions I've already been doing. I've implemented some of his training into my own program and noticed an immediate difference, especially with working the abs. The diet section, his recommendations on how to approach the food stuffs, is down to earth and very practical. I already had been eating healthfully this way for some time. When I read it his approach, I reached a conclusion that his method has been tried and tested because I went through the same ropes to learn the same things. It doesn't take a genius and he's figured out the common sense way to make it simple and with results. However, Stallone's indulgences for sweets is evident and he allows himself one day a week for a splurge. I never do this and so perhaps my own diet is stricter than his! The book is written as both an instructional book for beginners, intermediate strength building athletes and has some advanced exercises for advanced training. He has great exercises for building up the core and working the interior back muscles along the spine and not just the cosmetic aspects of the back. These are great exercises, especially for someone like me who needs to strengthen the back and spine. This book is also an inspirational fitness book. I think what strikes me most about the book is the personality that bubbles out from the pages - like the essence of the man and his strength, energy, and great sense of humor - it all comes off the pages and seems to reach people on this basic level - like his Rocky character - no frills and straight from the heart. He even goes into the pitfalls of self competition and what he learned along the way. Love it. The book is an easy to read book and even includes a section for women's fitness and features Stallone's beautiful wife, Jennifer. It's a good book to add to your fitness library. I read it and turn to it almost daily for tidbits of information to add to my workouts and health regime.
Regarding the latest stint about steroids - well that has nothing to do with the book. The book was written several years ago and there is nothing about it that is not true in terms of fitness. I give the book a five star rating because of its content alone. I don't compare it to something outside of it's subject matter like steriods, which is outside of the book's content. I rated the book by its own merit and not because I agree with or don't agree with the current news lines about steriods. That is a topic and circumstance outside the topic of the book.
Sly Moves.......2007-03-19
I started this book expecting it to be another body builder babbling on about who knows what, but it was suprisingly down to earth and interesting.
LIke the book generally but in light of............2007-03-18
I like this book, but I take it with a grain of salt now that he was found holding growth hormone in Australia, which makes it way easier to stay lean. Older guys are definitely purchasers of this book & without mentioning HGH it is a little misleading.
General principles & stories are good though.
Memorable advice........2007-03-17
Unlike most celebrities who write diet or exercise books, this is from someone who really knows their stuff. The proof is up there on the screen.
The book starts off with an account of his movies that I was tempted to skip but found that it all relates to exercise. He comes across as a very sincere guy. One story that will stick with me is when Stallone was working on the recent Contender TV series. He threw out all the junk food the boxers were eating. When they complained to him he told them "Look. I'm in better shape than you and I'm not even a real fighter. And I'm twice your age!" You could learn a lot from a guy like this. I'm glad he wrote the book.

Imagine all the happiness and wealth you could achieve if you found a magic pebble that granted your every wish! Sylvester Duncan, an unassuming donkey who collects pebbles "of unusual shape and color," experiences just such a lucky find. But before he can make all his wishes come true, the young donkey unexpectedly encounters a mean-looking lion. Startled, Sylvester wishes he were a rock, but in mineral form he can no longer hold the pebble, and thus cannot wish himself back to his equine trappings. His parents, thinking he has disappeared, are at first frantic, then miserable, and then plunge into donkey ennui. Meanwhile, Sylvester is gravely depressed, but tries to get used to being a rock.
In 1970, William Steig won the Caldecott Medal for Sylvester and the Magic Pebble--the first of his many Newbery and Caldecott honors. In this donkey's tale, Steig imbues his characteristically simple illustrations of animals sporting human garb with evocative, irresistible, and heartbreakingly vivid emotions. The text is straightforward and the dialogue remarkably touching. Children will feel deeply for Sylvester and his parents, all wishing for the impossible--that the family will one day be reunited. Sylvester's sweet story is one that endures, reminding us all that sometimes what we have is all we really need. (Ages 4 to 8)
Book Description
On a rainy day, Sylvester finds a magic pebble that can make wishes come true. But when a lion frightens him on his way home, Sylvester makes a wish that brings unexpected results.
How Sylvester is eventually reunited with his loving family and restored to his true self makes a story that is beautifully tender and filled with magic. Illustrated with William Steig's glowing pictures, this is a modern classic beloved by children everywhere.
Selected as one of the 100 Best Books of the Century by the National Education Association.
Customer Reviews:
A delightful story to share with your little ones.......2007-08-01
I love this story...Sylvester is such a sweet character, his parents make you so sad that they can't find him and there he is, right under their noses! It's a simple story, one that even the youngest children will appreciate. I especially like how the parents never really gave up looking for Sylvester and even though he wasn't around, he was still very much a part of their lives. Our loved ones never truly leave us, we are reminded of them daily in all sorts of ways. Such a nice sentiment to share with our children.
Sad, depressing story.......2007-07-19
I bought this book - sight unseen - because it was on my son's reading list for kindergarten. I about cried the first time I read it - it is very sad. It is about a boy who gets a magic pebble, and he can get whatever he wishes - and he accidentally turns into a rock and his parents cannot find him and mourn his loss. Then circumstances happen that he turns back into himself - like a year later. I just thought it was very weird and we will likely donate this book to the local library. Did not like it at all.
Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.......2007-04-11
I was disappointed in the book as a whole. When I read it to my second-graders, their "review" of the book was mixed. I don't think that I will be reading it again to another class.
There is always hope.......2007-03-13
This is quite a touching story filled with lots of symbolism. It actually hits home for a friend of mine. Her husband did not want to have a child and so she terminated her pregnancy out of great disappointment. The savegery of a lion serves as a symbol for what can take a child donkey away from you. The magic pebble is like God that wisks the donkey child away to safety. The wolf howling on the rock in the middle of winter is suffering from the pains of hunger, hunger to have a child back. You can think especially of a mother's pain when a child is gone and the hunger she has to have him back, sort of, the winter of her discontent. The donkey parents try their best to find joy despite their sadness, and, like in a dream come true, their son, Sylvester, is back. It says that even after a very catastrophic event to not lose hope no matter how terrible it can be.
I wish everyone reads this book........2007-03-12
This book was written about thirtyeight years ago. This would explain words like "sassafras salad", or the "timothy compote". These must have been the very popular delicacies of the time, but the theme of this book is timeless: be careful what you wish for while it is important to wish.

When the Hermitage in St. Petersburg celebrated the city's 300th anniversary in 2003, they assembled a selection of 50 years of Cy Twombly's works on paper, coinciding with the artist's seventy-fifth birthday. At first look, even the most savvy and well-heeled art lover is apt to think "my kid could do that," and there is a (very surface) bit of truth to this. Twombly, an American who moved to Rome in the 1950s, was obviously influenced by Jean Dubuffet's idea of art brut, as well as the work of Paul Klee, and of children. But it doesn't take long to see Twombly's genius. He created something very new with the pure gestures of abstract expressionism, and in this survey it's a joy to see the ways his work constantly changed, from adopting some of the formal strictures of minimalism in the 1970s to embracing vivid colors in the 1980s. Like the graffiti scratches (ancient and modern) that are perhaps Twombly's greatest influence, it's very playful, often rather dirty work. Unlike graffiti, it's exceptionally labored over. Once you can decipher his scratchy line, you notice that the subtle interplay of words and images is matched by very few others, though the work of Raymond Pettibon and Nancy Spero do spring to mind. Assembled for the St. Petersburg's show's arrival at the Whitney Museum in New York City, this book is a joy. Simon Schalma's essay is ribald, terse and excellent, while Roland Barthes' writing is, unsurprisingly, worth the price of the book alone. In a review for the New York Times of the show at the Whitney that this book accompanies, Holland Coter wrote that Twombly's early highly referential works are "as if Western cultural history was unfolding on the walls of a toilet stall." It's hard to think of higher praise. --Mike McGonigal
Book Description
Aggressively elegant, viscerally beautiful, Cy Twombly's work is, in the words of exhibition curator and contributing writer Julie Sylvester, "fundamentally subjective, truthful, and uncompromising." His work finds its most personal expression in his intimately sized drawings and paintings on paper. Finding inspiration as much in the forces of nature as in ancient epics and legends, and using the simplest of media--pencils, ballpoint pens, crayons, wall paint--he creates poetic and archaic worlds, usually in series and often as collages. The 84 drawings in this retrospective, organized by the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, in 2003 to mark Twombly's 75th birthday, were collected from the artist's studio, and many had not been previously exhibited. Dating between 1953 and 2002, the works embrace the entire career of one of the most important American artists alive today, from the early monotypes to the major mythological cycles of later years, revealing the many nuances of his aesthetic approach. This revised and expanded edition of the catalogue, created on the occasion of the presentation of Cy Twombly: Fifty Years of Works on Paper at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, includes an essay by Simon Schama, as well as a new text by curator Julie Sylvester. Roland Barthes's classic 1976 essay Non Multa Sed Multum: and a foreword by the Whitney's director, Adam D. Weinberg. Comprehensive biographical notes and a selected exhibition history and bibliography have also been added to this edition. Julie Sylvester is Associate Curator of Contemporary Art of the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, and is the Hermitage's first non-Russian curator. She is the author of John Chamberlain A Catalogue Raisonne of the Sculpture. Cy Twombly at the Hermitage was the second major contemporary exhibition in the history of the State Hermitage Museum. British historian Simon Schama has written numerous award-winning books on the cultural histories of countries including Holland and France, and is the author of the three-volume History of Britain. He is currently a professor at Columbia University, New York.

Book Description
"Two extraordinarily talented journalists, Michael Vitez and Tom Gralish, have captured this uniquely American phenomenon with whimsy, poignancy, and utter charm." --John Grogan, author of
Marley & Me
Pulitzer Prize-winners Michael Vitez and Tom Gralish of the
Philadelphia Inquirer spent a year visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art to capture the stories of "Rocky runners," who come from all over the world to run up America's most famous steps--just as Sylvester Stallone did in
Rocky. People make the pilgrimage to mark a new beginning, to seek inspiration, to celebrate an accomplishment, to find the perfect backdrop for romance, or simply because they love the movie. As one runner says, "It gives you the feeling that anything is possible."
The authors have uncovered a real cultural phenomenon, one that centers on Philadelphia and draws people to Center City, and yet, as Michael Vitez writes in his introduction, is a true American, and even international, rite of passage.
The book includes fifty-two profiles and one hundred photographs, together with a foreword by Sylvester Stallone, and interviews with
Rocky's Academy Award-winning director John G. Avildsen, composer Bill Conti, and cameraman Garrett Brown.
In his foreword, Sylvester Stallone sums up his thoughts on the phenomenon: "You can't borrow Superman's cape. You can't use the Jedi laser sword. But the steps are there. The steps are accessible. And standing up there, you kind of have a piece of the
Rocky pie."

"The Rocky steps have become a special place for tourists and Philadelphians alike. Virtually everyone who lives here or comes here wants to say that they ran up the Rocky steps and saw the incredible view down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. When I was Mayor, the city planned 24 hours of millennium celebrations, one each hour. Of course we had to kick it off at the Rocky steps and we did so with 2,000 people all dressed like Rocky running up the steps at the same time. It was awesome." --Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rocky Stories: Tales of Love, Hope, and Happiness at America's Most Famous Steps.......2007-03-18
Each story in the book is inspiring. Excellent writing and wonderful photography. Very enjoyable reading.
Very Inspirational.......2007-03-09
Love this clever book. If you love the Rocky film and the inspirational "pull yourself up by the book strings" ideals of the films then you're not alone - and this book proves it. Being a Philly native and a fellow alumni of LaSalle University this book and the stories it shares have a special place within me. Highly recommend it.
Stories of inspiration.......2007-01-17
my family and i had recently gone to philly for a family wedding. one of the main things that my elderly father wanted to see, before any of the more traditional things like the liberty bell, was the "rocky statue"! therefore, i bought this book for him for christmas to remind him of the day. of course i read some of it before gifting it, and found the stories to be very inspirational.. also, i was unable to find the book here in california, so was very thankful for the ease of ordering it through amazon.
Good Philly Publicity for once!.......2006-12-31
I have always loved the Rocky Movies even though some people think they insult our intelligence. It is more than just a movie it is an inspiration and after reading this book it makes me proud to be a Philadelphian even though Philly gets a bad rap. I have ran up those steps many times and I think that Rocky has put Philly on the map in a good way. Something we need badly here. The photos are wonderful, so inspirational and the stories are so heartful. Read this book! You won't regret it.
Yo! Buy this book!.......2006-12-30
You want to run up the Rocky steps, you know you do. In fact, if you've have ever had the chance, you probably already have. Nobody comes to Philadelphia without jogging to the top of the Art Museum steps, twirling around, and triumphantly pumping their fists in the air. If you've seen the movie, and ever been in Philly, you've climbed the steps. I'd bet a cheesesteak on it. If you haven't been fortunate enough to star in your own reenactment of this classic cinematic scene, this book is the next best thing. It's full of great stories and photographs of people fulfilling their dream of following in Rocky Balboa's footsteps, which, for each and every one of them, commemorates some unique goal, achievement, or special moment. It's a terrific book about humanity. Buy one for yourself and one for someone else - it's a great gift. Enjoy.

Book Description
This volume emphasizes an aspect of children's picture books that has not yet been thoroughly investigated: structure. Both concept books and picture storybooks employ very distinctive structures that, once mastered, can be applied to any picture book you wish to write. When so many of the best picture books employ the same structures, it is important to analyze these structures, understand why they work, and learn how to incorporate them into your own writing. This volume helps you do all that. You will see that no matter how carefully you labor over the tone, word choice, plot, character, setting, theme and style of your picture book, you must have a thorough grasp of its structure if you wish your book to succeed. Indeed, you will find that an expert command of structure is the key to writing a successful children's picture book.

Very helpful.......2007-10-07
I have at least a dozen books on writing for children and I especially like this one. Not only does it focus exclusively on picture books, which few others do, it provides solid, concrete information that you can apply directly to your own writing. Too many other books offer vague tips that may be helpful in polishing an existing manuscript, but don't help with building your story from the ground up. I've been trying (sporadically) to sell picture book manuscripts for several years now, and I believe that what I've learned from this book will help get me closer to my goal of being a published author. Volumes II and III are on their way to me now and I can't wait to see what they have to offer!
How to write a Children's Picture Book.......2007-03-22
The book takes popular children's book and breaks apart the beginning, middle and ending so that you get a very clear picture of how your story should progess. An excellent resource.
A Constant Companion.......2007-01-02
Eve Heidi Bine-Stock's HOW TO WRITE A CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK (VOLUMES I, II and III)is a constant companion and rich resource in the planning and revision of picture books. The deconstruction of picture books, and the detailed classification of crucial characteristics - using classic picture books to illustrate each detailed point - make these books invaluable. Although I particularly use Volume I and II in the planning stage of a new manuscript, all three volumes are again by my side during each revision, and each step of each revision. There is no question in my mind that these books are the biggest resource in pushing my writing to the next level. The volumes are not read-once-and-put-aside books; they are books you will want on your writing desk for constant reference.
Practical, Easy-to-use.......2004-11-11
As an author of many books for children, I found this book to be one of the most practical and helpful tools to format a picture book during the writing process. I'm already using the techniques to structure new projects to make my picture book manuscripts shine! I plan on recommending it to my critique group as well as buying copies as gifts for my writer friends.
A "must-have" for any aspiring children's picturebook writer.......2004-06-07
How To Write A Children's Picture Book focuses especially upon structure as the key to creating a memorable and entertaining treasure for children to read, share, and learn from. Distinguishing between picturebooks and picture storybooks, and closely examining such enduring children's classics as "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Where The Wild Things Are", How To Write A Children's Picture Book is a highly useful and focused guide that dissects the nuts and bolts of writing with a keen eye toward higher achievement and quality. A "must-have" for any aspiring children's picturebook writer.

Book Description
Sylvester Nemes is singlehandedly responsible for the popularity of the soft-hackled fly in American fly fishing today. The Soft-Hackled Fly, Nemes's first book, written in 1975, was the catalyst for the resurgence. Now revised with ten new chapters on tiny flies and full-color photos, Nemes shares colorful experiences at home and abroad, the history of the soft-hackled fly, and illustrated step-by-step instructions for tying the flies. He also describes his technique of fishing the flies.

Ancient methods have a place today!.......2007-10-05
Here is what our forefathers were doing successfully in a delightful and deadly method of fly fishing.Simple and very effective.
This book shows you how and with what.
A MUST READ BOOK FOR FLYFISHERS.......2007-07-21
This is simply a great book. It is written with a fantastic style that makes you want to run out and tie up a bunch of softhackles and fish them the way Mr. Nemes does. The section on tiny soft hackles is important for anyone who fishes midges, tricos and other small hatches as it gives much information and options to match the hatch!
Surprised how much I liked this book.......2007-05-16
This book can only be described as charming.
I am not normally interested in older books on trout fishing - somehow they just don't seem relevant to me. There are superb modern books and authors on the subject. However I purchased this book (originally written 1975) as I am keen on soft hackled flies and every up to date text on the subject waxed lyrical about it. I was glad I did. Not only was the practical information good, but the delivery was inspiring and poetic.
Utterly charming book!
This will change your fishing.......2007-05-12
Nemes methodically but artfully convinced me to use these flies and I now enjoy fly fishing more than ever. Must-read.
Great Piece on both tying and fishing soft hackles.......2007-01-14
This little book is a great read--good examples of how to fish the flies and how to tie them. The section on tiny soft hackles is a nice addition. Mr. Nemes's style of writing is pleasant to read as well.

A Reliable Purchase.......2007-06-06
After my 5 year old son was diagnosed with AVSD, I engrossed myself into extensive research about his condition. While I discovered many other books with great information, I found this one to be the most inclusive, definitive and easy to interpret. The Q&A are broken down under each chapter specifically dealing with certain attributes one might be facing with a diagnoses; not all,but most of my questions were answered after reading this book. Highly, highly recommended.

Excellent Book with Real Q's & A's that are relevant.......2003-07-04
My new born daughter was recently diagnosed with Complex Congential Heart Defects and naturally I wanted to learn as much as I could about the topic. I purchased several related boks through Amazon.com and founf this one to be very relevant and answered lots of appropriate questions for me. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about Heart Defects of any type. It is very thorough and covers every defect I am aware of.
Great Book for Parents of Kids with CHD's.......2003-01-24
I loved the question/answer format of this book. It made an overwhelming and complicated topic far more understandable. I wish this book had been available when our son was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Vessels 12 years ago. We had so many questions, and while the doctors and nurses were super, a resource like this would have been invaluable becuase the questions don't stop when you finally leave the hospital! I'm sure the authors will keep the book as up-to-date as possible, but just know that cutting edge research is improving the methods of diagnosing and treating chd's every day. So, if the treatment protocol your doctor recommends isn't listed, don't panic. You might be benefiting from the latest research! When our son had his surgery, the Arterial Switch operation, which is now standard procedure, was only being done at a handful of hospitals around the country. Kids born with chd's today have a much better outlook thanks to the advances made by research. And, with more research, tomorrow will be even better.
A Must Read Guide For All Parents.......2002-10-10
My son Noah was diagnosed in-utero with a VSD and at the age of 9 days received his first sonogram and EKG. The VSD closed - confirmed at his 1-year appointment, but was diagnosed with mitral valve stenosis at this same appointment. This book guides one through diagnosis, parental coping, issues/caring for the newly born, answers many of your obvious and not so obvious questions, surgery - what to expect/how to prepare and the likely impact your childs' condition may have on his/her life basis current knowledge. It also is full of annecdotal stories from parents that are going through the same thing you are as well as commentary from pediatric cardiologists. Additionally, there are resources from the internet to camps in the appendicies. No doubt, the book is at times depressing, but it is also enlightening. The undelying message is you need to be prepared for what you and your child are yet to experience and it is a map to guide you in this area
The Best Book You Will Ever Buy!!.......2002-09-23
I would recommend this book to anyone with a child that has a congenital heart defect. This book is easy to read and explains anything and everything you need to know about a heart defect.
My husband and I searched everywhere for answers. This book answered all our questions.
