Thundering Typhoons!! Had been trying to get my hands on this issue as it introduces my fave. character!! It compliments the package well because the issues are in a sequence and one ends up getting more of blistering barnacles! I would recommend this to Haddock's admiration club and otherwise as well!

2 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2007-02-07

The quality of the printing is far from perfect. It smooches on several pages. Also, I read the French version first and the English one is, in my opinion, rather lame. A lot of work would need to be done to improve it.

5 out of 5 stars Tintin on his adventures!.......2007-01-21

I have read many Tintin adventures and love them all. Herge can make very funny adventure stories.
In the book, The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin meets Captain Haddock. Captain Haddok loves whisky. Professor Calculus is not here. He comes in Red Rackham's treasure.

Volume 3: The Crab With the Golden Claws (1942), The Shooting Star (1942), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943). This is the third instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.

As I mentioned in my review for Volume 1, as a child I read these stories in no particular order. So, when reading The Crab With the Golden Claws, I was surprised to see Captain Haddock in such a pitiable state, having made his acquaintance in later adventures...

But this is where he is introduced, and the friendship that develops between Haddock and Tintin not only allows the alcoholic captain to bloom, it lifts the curtain on one of the most entertaining, impulsive (Haddock = ad hoc, get it? In French, the pronunciation of the two is exactly the same...), flawed, and in essence loyal, good hearted and lovable characters in all comicdom. His irascible nature will be abundantly prodded with insufferable foils (Wagg, Abdullah, Castafiore, the Thom(p)sons, and sundry villains) throughout the series. We also meet the sinister Allan for the first time. The story takes place in Morocco, and the child sees yet more of our planet's vistas, while the adult continues to revel in Hergé's textured adventures and detailed settings, as well as a terrifying dream sequence.

Michael Farr's "Tintin: The Complete Companion" (highly recommended), gives a glimpse at why Tintin did not take in the USA as it did in the rest of the world, and that has to do with a couple of panels from The Shooting Star. Though with some brilliant sequences, such as the cinematic seasickness scene, it is not as captivating as the usual Tintin standard, but again, one does not want to miss a single adventure.

The Secret of the Unicorn has a number of threads, one of which develops into the sequel, Red Rackham's Treasure.

3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Here we have the quite silly Ronin subplot, a mysterious masked hero that none of them know about except for the boss. The Silver Samuria, ninjas, and other posturing silliness. The best part about this is the Spider-Woman spy saga. She cannot currently tell if she is a triple, quadruple, quintuple or whatever other sort of agent.

4 out of 5 stars The New Avengers vs...Ninjas!.......2007-08-28

Pretty cool ninja fight in the first couple of issues, with some hints about the upcoming Skrull invasion of the Marvel Universe (look really close...). Who's working for who? Does it even matter once the shurikens start flying? The ninja action continues in New Avengers Vol. 6: Revolution! This is the Avengers like you've never seen them before, and that's going to turn some fans off of the series.

3 out of 5 stars Revelations and resolutions; kind of.......2007-03-20

The third collected volume of Brian Michael Bendis' New Avengers is nowhere near as good or enjoyable as the first two volumes. In saying that, what we get here in Secrets & Lies isn't bad at all, it's just not as compelling as one would hope. Secrets & Lies starts off in familiar territory with the New Avengers taking on Hydra who is trying to free the Silver Samurai, and leads up to Captain America recruiting a mysterious new member named Ronin. As the TPB continues, Spider-Woman's secrets get revealed, as Cap learns the truth behind the return of her super powers, as well as just who she is working for. The entire synopsis that you just read is actually more interesting than the actual events taking place here in Secrets & Lies, because Bendis just doesn't seem to be that into the story himself. Ronin isn't that interesting of a character in my opinion, and the book focuses on too many single members (particularly Cap) than the group as a whole. David Finch's artwork is his usual great stuff, as is the work by Frank Cho which is featured here as well. All in all, Secrets & Lies isn't at all bad, but Bendis has done much better with the series, and this is his low point so far.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first two........2007-02-17

I liked the New Avengers and am a big fan of just about all of them, but I would recommend to stop buying after Book Two. The first one was the the best of the three of them, (then again aren't they always?) but after that the whole plot started to take a downward spiral. The whole plot with the Sentry was ok, but could have made more sense, but I just didn't get the direction this one took. Spider Woman, who I would like to picture as more of a 'tough cookie' character, was made into a dishonest Barbie girl and Wolverine as well was butchered. (Think slob.) Not much attention is given to the characters other than Captain America (as usual)and Spider Woman(great, when she finally gets publicity, it's negative...)

To sum it up, in my opinion, not the worth the money. Read it at a local book or comic store.

4 out of 5 stars calling all spider-woman fans.......2007-01-08

bendis is always a reliable writer, and he does a good job with these stories that w/ another writer would've just been filler. the first three issues (#11-13) bring the team to japan where hydra and the hand are trying to use the silver samurai to join forces, but the ending is too abrupt and clearly leaves the situation open to future story arcs. we do have the plus of some great fight scenes, attention given to spider-woman, and the reappearance of a character that fans of the daredevil series will enjoy seeing back in action. the 8-page story from giant-size spider-woman #1 and issues #14 and 15 are more interesting, w/ the full story about how spider-woman got her powers back and who she's working for, the public debut of the new avengers, as well as some insight into where ms. marvel's headed. david finch's art is as good as ever, and frank cho's is worthwhile as well. not one for the ages, but a good read and it'll have you looking forward to vol. 4.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Conclusion.......2007-02-03

I first read this book and the two before it as a teenager about a decade ago and still enjoy re-reading them. Through the story the characters change and grow lending an air of conviction and meaning to their actions and their fight. The true "villian" is not Faye, but the same dark force fought by the young coven's parents, with devestating results, the generation before. Cassie, Diana, and Faye come together to fight in the end.

    5 out of 5 stars A fitting conclusion.......2006-04-11

The first time around, I read this trilogy out of order. I picked this book up in a used bookstore when I was about ten, and I loved it so much that I went out and bought the two other books in the trilogy, and every other one that L.J. Smith had written at that point. Eight years later and it's still probably my favorite book by her.

The development of Cassie throughout all three books is fantastic, and so gradual that you almost don't see it until the second or third book, when you suddenly go, "Cassie, my girl! When did you grow a spine?" In the first book she's a mouse, and by the third one she's a heroine in every sense of the word, without being so larger-than-life and perfect that you can't identify her. The development of the other characters is equally fabulous.

As I mentioned in my review for the second book, I absolutely adore the fact that this author can have half a dozen seemingly disparate plots running, then tie them together in a way which is both elegant and believable. In this book, all of the loose ends are tied up: the Master Tools are found, Black John makes his appearance, the murders are solved, and the coven is faced the choice of standing together or falling apart. The final confrontation with the villain is more mystical than violent, and a fitting conclusion to this marvelous series.

The entire trilogy is excellent, but this is without a doubt the best book of the three.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Twist.......2005-07-12

I liked the twist in this book. I really wasn't expecting some of the things that happened, though they may have been right under my nose. I won't say more because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, but you're going to be surprised.

This book, more than the first two, is very complex. Smith really does an excellent job of playing on many of the central themes of most pagan philosophy. The story is woven around the ideas of balance and sort of yin-yang philosophy. Plus, she obviously did her research on stones and herbs (as with the previous novels). The only complaint I really have is that there isn't a fourth book.

    4 out of 5 stars The End.......2004-12-25

In this conclusion ea. of the characters must really make a choice as to who they want to be. Despite all the characters being sworn into a coven they have never been united. There has always been Faye's gang of wild and reckless witches that like to use their powers to have fun and then Diana's gang of goody-goody brainiacs. Then there's Nick - who's remained quietly reserved about his feelings the whole time.
Now that there is a common evil outside of their group (John Black)they have made a pact to work together to destroy him, with the exception of Faye who is drawn to the power he possesses. Now the time has come. The final battle.
Together the coven must select a permanent leader and figure out a way of stopping John Black and protecting the town of New Salem.
I enjoyed every minute of this book. It was fully of mystery, romance, betrayal, strategic battles, poems, etc. But it really shows what we all experience and must battle (figuratively) while growing up and leaving HS.
I do however have one complaint and what really takes the review down from 5 to 4 stars is Cassie's choice in a mate. The 2nd book hinted at a likeness Nick had for Cassie but he really starts to open himself slowly up to Cassie and it is so sweet because you know how hard it is for Nick to lay openly exposed like that. But Cassie forever stays convicted to this love she has for Adam. I'm totally an advocate for love at first sight, but Adam is just too polite and nice w/o any layers at all. In her third "Dark Visions" book, "The Passion", she has a similar quartet of lovers. Kait and Cassie (the main characters) are very similarly attracted to the nice boy (Rob/Adam) but where "The Passions" ends w/ Kait discovering a true connection of equalness to the "bad boy" Gabriel this book ends w/ Cassie never really feeling any attraction to Nick - only using him as a security blanket while she battled her lust for Adam.
Nick and Cassie have so much in common - personality wise - and I think she could really make him happier and together they'd work so well. Whereas I just see quietness between Adam and Cassie - I think they'll end up just empty.
Despite my dissatisfaction w/ the person Cassie chooses (sorry for giving that away) I strongly reccommend you to read each of the books of this trilogy. They are just incredibly real!!

    5 out of 5 stars icefury19.......2004-10-26

This was a really terrific book and so is the author. Cassie loyalty to Diana is threaten by Faye when Faye find out some dirt on Cassie. Faye leads Cassie further into the path she walks. After doing her bidding, she releases John Black, the one who doing all the killing and who is Cassie father. He also turn the people against the witches. It ends up being Cassie who must stopped John Black. The ending is cool because Cassie ends up being a leader of the coven with Faye and Diana. The ending was awesome.

    4 out of 5 stars Great series.......2004-12-12

Although short, I really enjoy these series of books because they give you a taste of what the authors can do. Once read you can find the rest of their books & enjoy them so much more because they are longer. A great way to find new talent.

4 out of 5 stars super tales and another Knight gem.......2002-10-26

The Red Sage books offer four great tales from different periods, the tales are exceptionally well written, cutting edge, steamy romances. But having read them all, find most of the tale soon fade. NOT Angela Knight. No matter the tale she is the strongest of the writers and needs to be writing big books!!

THis one offers another variation of periods.

Jeannie Cesarini give you The Spy Who Loved Me. She and another undercover FBI agent are posed as actors to break a porn-snuff ring.

Ann Jacobs' tale is The Barbarian. Started out really well, but went down hill. Lady Brianna and her castle are given to Giles, Earl of Harrow and she vows not to surrender. Medieval is my period - so I was really enjoying this tale. But sorry, when he turned her over his the Eunuch and had him teach her how to please him and told her when he was away the Eunuch would keep her happy, I lost interest.

BJ McCall has another tale of Love Undercover, in this one, Lieutenant Amanda Forbes finds herself in a sting operations at the local strip joint where she must perform on stage while her partner is bouncer. This was the second strongest of the group.

But as usual, Angela Knight gives you the best and most memorable tale. Red Sage's Secrets are very interesting cutting edge of Romance fiction. I would be them for Angela Knight alone. Her books are super. Frankly, they would make super movies. And once again, her story is the strongest in this set of four.

Angela Knight's BLOOD AND KISSES is really was cracking good story. It is a futuristic vampire tale. Vampire assassin, Tagliar is after Beryl St. Cloud. Her only hope lies with one good vampire named Decker. An ex-mercenary, he is now freelance and requires payment for help. Since Beryl is broke, there is only one thing she can offer in payment...her blood...however James Decker finds her wants a lot more...one year to be exact. Knight says sadly most vampires are either whiners or psychopaths...too true. So she sets out to give a dark hearted, vampire hero. One rocking story!! Angela Knight I would read ANYTHING YOU WRITE!! * * * * * for this tale

5 out of 5 stars Four Fantastic and Sizzling Stories!.......2002-01-22

"The Spy Who Loved Me" by Jeanie Cesarini is about two FBI agents who fall for each other while they are working undercover. An excellent story as is the related story in Secrets 4.
"The Barbarian" by Ann Jacobs is about an Earl using the sensual arts he learned in the East to conquer his bride. Think Beatrice small, but hotter!
"Blood and Kisses" by Angela Knight is my favorite. It's a futuristic vampire romance with Beryl St. Cloud, hiring vampire and ex-mercenary Decker to protect her from a vampire assassin.
This is a wonderful and very steamy story.
"Love Undercover" by B.J. McCall is about a female cop undercover as bait in a strip club and her fellow detective who's undercover also. Excellent story!
    Wonderful stories, Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Hot! Hot! Hot!.......2000-10-06

Blood and Kisses was just the absolute BEST! I've always loved vampire romances and this story alone makes the purchase price worthwhile. The other stories were good (barbarian & princess, cops & secret agents), but Blood and Kisses was incredible - I can't wait to read all the other volumes!

5 out of 5 stars Sensual and Sizzle.......2000-04-28

Wow! This was a great read. I especially liked the Blood and Kisses story. I will definitley look for these authors again and also the series. Keep them coming please.

1 out of 5 stars The Whim of the Dragon.......2006-05-18

The end of this book was terrible. The end of a series should be catacalismic for someone, but in this book everyone, even the bad guys, get what they want. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret: Each Book Gets Better.......2006-01-08

I originally picked up this trilogy because it looked interesting and the other reviewers raved about it. Chapters into the first book, I began to wonder why it was so beloved. More questions than answers swam across the page, drowning me in confusion and frustration. I felt thrown into a sea without a life preserver. The language was too archaic at times, and I constantly felt I was not being given enough information to process the storyline.

I felt like I was plowing through the book with an old, tired horse in a massive field full of rocks while the burning sun beat down from above. Being a complete-ist, however, I trudged on and picked up book #2. Halfway through, I pleasantly discovered that my horse was more spry, the rocks had disappeared from the field, and I was wearing a broad-rimmed hat. I was still plowing, but it wasn't nearly as painful. By book #3, I had a tractor, cool breeze, and lemonade in my hand. The work was no longer a chore but a welcome vacation I found thoroughly enjoyable.

I can hardly account for the transition, but it did happen. I recommend the trilogy to those who are not afraid to persevere in the beginning to achieve a great reward in the end.

    5 out of 5 stars Great news!.......2002-02-06

Review-wise, I can't really add much to those who have spoken before me (see below), but I can pass on that the series is to be reprinted starting in 2003! Great for those of us who were having problems finding all three books!

5 out of 5 stars This book should not be out of print!.......2000-01-09

The Whim of the Dragon is the final book in an incredible series, and it lives up to the first two splendidly.

In this book the children are forced to grow up, to realize that their game really has affected other people's lives. They have to take responsibility for their Secret. Dean pulls no punches. The book is bittersweet; it made me cry and laugh together, not sure which emotion was in control.

Definitely one of the best things I've read. I would recommend it to everyone, but since it's unavailable that's not very useful. It's now almost impossible to find, a fact which I find frustrating to the point of tragedy.

    5 out of 5 stars Six stars!.......1999-07-22

_The Whim of the Dragon_ is the last book in the trilogy that begins with _The Secret Country_ and _The Hidden Land._ I cannot praise Pamela Dean's unique writing style highly enough. It sings. Magic and poetry are interwoven in a setting in which the mage's talent is essentially poetic; literary allusions, most commonly to Shakespeare, are everywhere. A superlative read for children and adults alike.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Bonsai books available!.......2004-06-19

I bought this book approximately four years ago when I had the pleasure to meet the author, Mr. Charles Harnett.
This book is filled with tips on care and maintenance for most species of bonsai.
It is an easy read and really covers the questions anyone might ask about watering, sunlight, fertilization, potting, re-potting and many, many other topics.
It also covers how to spot and buy a true bonsai and not what most people think are true bonsai. The author details the differences between the two.
Having a long history with bonsai, beginning with military service under a master in Japan, the author's experience shines through clearly.
I have also had the privilege to buy two trees from the authors business and have had them for four years and counting. I have used his tips in their care since day one.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who would like to explore the world of Bonsai.
