4 out of 5 stars An old fashioned Delinsky.......2007-01-25

As usual Barbara Delinsky books are a tale of human relationships much like you would find in any real human experience.. enjoyable light reading good for travelling and beach.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed in content and story line........2005-09-27

I was disappointed in this novel because I thought it was one of Delinsky's newer novels - some romance but a plot that is believable and makes you think and hopefully grow. Instead it was one of her older ones - what I think of as typical 70's romance trash. My mistake.

4 out of 5 stars Through My Eyes.......2005-04-14

A great book all round - though not perfect. The passion of Jill & Peter is palpable in several scenes - it just sizzles of the pages! I love the "realism" of the writing style (i.e not your typical M&B romance with a rich, slick guy making stumbling mistakes, hurting the female protaganist) though the alleged crime was a bit dramatic. I thought the ending of her best friend's trial could have been described more as it was the reason why Jill & Peter met and perhaps there should be a bit more depth to the story. Despite that, this story could be listed as one of my favourites. For those, who have not read it and want to know more...
After her husband died six years ago, Jill Moncrieff is settled in a quiet life in a small Maine town. She turned her back on her rich background, sees her high-profile family minimally and has pursued her dream as an artist (potter). However, her best friend, Cooper is in legal trouble as he is falsely accused of a crime and she seeks the legal advice of the best criminal lawyer known in New York, Peter Hathaway. She knows she needs his expertise, yet is reluctant to acknowledge the strong attraction between them. She has remained loyal to her late husband and her quiet, country life since his passing. However, Peter Hathaway surprises her as he is not the typical city slicker, coming from a rough and tough childhood. The two of them work on helping Cooper while they battle out their attraction. Jill takes the time to "re-evaluate" her life, to move on.

I am a very big fan of Barbara Delinsky, probably because her stories are in my New England area. This one is very special, and though I can usually see the ending coming, I could not with this one! For any fan, this is great, and if you have never read her novels, watch out-you may become addicted! Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2000-05-24

This is one of my favorite Delinsky books, without a doubt. In fact, it's also one of my favorite romance novels ever. No, it's not Gone With the Wind, but how many romance books are? I just liked the characters and their story and found them both very sexy and romantic. And for those who like steamy, sensuous love scenes, there is a multi-paged one in this book that goes on and on and is quite memorable. Yes, those readers who came to like Delinsky when she started writing her hardcover contemporary novels for women may be disappointed because she's writing different types of stories today. But for those who have liked some of the early stuff by Delinsky, you'll probably like th is. In any case, it's a perfectly good read for a weekend afternoon.

Surrounded by federal marshals, 6-year-old Ruby Bridges became the first black student ever at the all-white William Frantz Public School in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 14, 1960. Perhaps never had so much hatred been directed at so perfect a symbol of innocence--which makes it all the more remarkable that her memoir, simple in language and rich in history and sepia-toned photographs, is informed mainly by a sort of bewildered compassion. Throughout, readers will find quotes from newspapers of the time, family members, and teachers; sidebars illustrating how Ruby Bridges pops up in both John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley and a Norman Rockwell painting; and a fascinating update on Bridges's life and civil rights work. A personal, deeply moving historical documentary about a staggeringly courageous little girl at the center of events that already seem unbelievable. (Ages 6 and older) --Richard Farr

Book Description

In November 1960, all of America watched as a tiny six-year-old black girl, surrounded by federal Marshall's, walked through a mob of screaming segregationists and into her school. An icon of the civil rights movement, Ruby Bridges chronicles each dramatic step of this pivotal event in history.

5 out of 5 stars Ruby Bridges review by Sophie K........2006-07-19

I chose this book from my summer reading list because I have a special interest in the Civil Rights Movement. I learned about Ruby Bridges during African American Month at school and got really interested in her story. I liked this book a lot because it taught me about integration and segration in a way that was easy to understand. The photographs brought the story to life, and I liked the way the story was told from Ruby's point of view. I would really recommend this book to kids my age (third grade) and older who are interested in this kind of book. My parents really liked the book too!

5 out of 5 stars A Historical Must Read.......2006-04-04

This inspirational story, told by Ruby Bridges herself, can help children understand some of the struggles of African-Americans during the 1960's. Ruby's courageousness and determination is the message young readers are presented with. The real-life photos give readers a visual account of the hard times that Ruby and other African-Americans endured. Also included in this autobiography are quotes from many of the people that Ruby encountered in her life including her mother, her first grade teacher, Barbara Henry, and her childhood psychologist, Robert Cole. A quote from a 1963 speech by Martin Luther King is included which further supports the civil rights theme in this book. Excerpts from text such as The New York Times and Good Housekeeping gives readers even more factual information about the time period. The book includes photo credits as well as text credits with copyrights to ensure the reliability. This text can be used with children in grades five through eight studying the civil rights movement or school integration in the 1960's.

I really loved this book, it has a lot of pics and information about the time everything happened. This girl is such an example for everyone...

5 out of 5 stars In her own words.......2006-02-22

This is an insprational story about a brave little girl told from historical accounts and through her memories years later. There are many moving photographs along with the touching story of her experiences as the only black student integrating an all white school.

5 out of 5 stars Moved me to tears.......2006-01-26

This is a wonderful accessible book for people of all ages. The story of Ruby Bridges, what she endured, the people who stood by her, moved me to tears when I read about them. It is a powerful, poignant story.

4 out of 5 stars Good book on Mande Munda History.......2007-05-27

I really enjoyed reading the book.
It gives a glimpse of background on Mande Muda and Pak Herman Suwanda.
The book shows the Silat styles that make up Mande Muda.
I wish the book had more in depth coverage of the Silat styles of Mande Muda.
As a matter of fact, that is one of the reasons I didn't give it a 5 star.
The other reason is that the book had about 2 chapters covering the Indonesian History. I would've prefered less coverage of the Indonesian History and more coverage on the Indonesian Silat.
The Indonesian history chapters are outlines. I fell asleep most of the time in history class during grade and elementary school in Indonesia. So I guess this was a good way for me to catch up *haha*
Nonetheless a good book on Mande Muda history. I wouldn't recommend this book if you're looking at technique or jurus illustrations. There are other Silat books that cover techniques and jurus better.

4 out of 5 stars highly recommended.......2007-05-15

I really like the way this book is organized. Admitedly, I would like some of the chapters shorter (history of Indonesia, without relevance to silat) and some others longer (technical portion, eg. jurus and their buah), but than again, there is no such thing as a perfect book.
This time, though, I think than Mr. Somera did a great job as an editor (well, maybe some linguistic details could have been more correct...but than again, maybe that would not give us closer image of Herman Suwanda). The material is well presented and I especially like the order of chapters. In my view, the reflections of some more prominent students of the late Pak Herman included after the technical portion, are beautifullt done and really make those reders (myself included) who never had the chance to meet the man, start understanding the impact he had on people around him.
I would wholehartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in martial arts, and for those into silat, I'd say it's a must read.
By now you might be wondering why not 5 start then? Because I feel that this book does not meet the expectations, i.e. the potential it had. If it had mor in depth presentation ofthe technical material (like in book on Leo Giron for example) to make it a little bit better rounded, I would not hesitate giving it 5/5 rating.

Here again, my complain about the shipping conditions stand once more. I held Amazon in very high regard as a company, so they should not allow for mistakes like changing the shipping method without customer's consent.

Book Description

The violin master class of Jascha Heifetz was a fascinating mix of nationalities, personalities, and temperaments. Mr. Heifetz, the artist, the teacher, and the man, shared with his students a tradition which he was largely responsible for creating.

For eleven years, I was privileged to be among the elite few who were welcomed into his inner circle, and discovered what the outside world longed to know about him.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inside Edition!.......2005-11-26

After being thoroughly disappointed by Ayke Agus' depressing
tome "Heifetz As I Knew Him", I was a bit worried that
this book was going to be the same way. I was way wrong!
Sherry Kloss, in under 200 pages, gives such a look into a period of 12 years here in Southern California, which were the waning years of Heifetz's life and career, that it's almost as if the reader was living life alongside her. I'll be frank in saying that unless you're a violinist or familiar with Heifetz the man (beyond his recordings), this isn't the book for you.
There has always been a good deal of sordid talk that goes along with Heifetz - "great musician, rotten and abusive tyrant",
and so forth. Luckily, this book allays some of that stuff a bit - or at least gives some understanding as to why Heifetz was often perceived in such a light. He set very high standards for himself (and everyone associated with him). Sherry Kloss was one of the few people Heifetz trusted and genuinely liked - and she understood him for who, and what, he was (faults aside).
This book contains many good photographs from the Heifetz USC Class Halloween parties and music-making events, and also some of Kloss' own recital programs (which Heifetz helped her plan).
If there's any fault to this book, it's that it is too short.

5 out of 5 stars Heifetz Remembered.......2004-02-08

Sherry Kloss honors her teacher, sharing the reality of the great master. She experienced the "whole man/musician" who mentored her, and shares it joyously with those of us who live vicariously through the pages with her. This is a fine work for aspiring musicians and those of us who have aspired!

5 out of 5 stars Jascha Heifetz Remembered.......2003-05-02

I highly recommend "Jascha Heifetz Through My Eyes," a book written by Sherry Kloss. Ms. Kloss was so fortunate to have had such a close relationship with Mr. Heifetz, and it is described so touchingly in this book. All lovers of music-and especially of the violin-will find this book a joy to read. Once I started, I couldn't put it down.
In addition, I enjoyed Sherry Kloss' renditions of Heifetz' transcriptions, which she provides on her two compact disks: "Lost and Found Treasures of the Heifetz Legacy" and "Forgotten Gems from the Heifetz Legacy." The book and the two compact disks should be in the library of every violin enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Aspect of the Violinist/Teacher.......2003-04-30

I have read several biographies of Jascha Heifetz, and this is the only one that made me wish that I had met him. Sherry Kloss was able to see beyond the personal idiosyncracies of this consummate violinist to the essential good that was within him. The book is also interesting for the insights it gives the reader into what it was like to be in Heifetz's violin class in the mid 1970's. Unlike some other books and articles I've read about Heifetz, this one did not leave me feeling depressed. It should be on the reading list of anyone interested in the life of Jascha Heifetz or in the study of the violin.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2003-04-30

Sherry's book brings a personal, human view to Jascha Heifetz. She was gives us insight to a kindness and compassionate side that few may have known. Not only is the book extremely entertaining, but for the reader, we are allowed to have a look in on the master class teachings, the daily life at USC, and the parties held at the Heifetz home.

Sherry allows us to see the care her teacher had not only in his work, for which he gave everything, but the concern he had for the welfare of his students. He was a very generous person in all respects.

I laughed out loud at several passages. The imagry of the fun loving, full of life young violinst, meeting the formal, reserve of the great artist. You must read it, and enjoy it as much as I did!

The pictures are also an additional treat.

Book Description

Unique insights from an atheist’s Sunday-morning odyssey

When Hemant Mehta was a teenager he stopped believing in God, but he never lost his interest in religion. Mehta is “the eBay atheist,” the nonbeliever who auctioned off the opportunity for the winning bidder to send him to church. The auction winner was Jim Henderson, a former pastor and author of Evangelism Without Additives. Since then, Mehta has visited a variety of church services–posting his insightful critiques on the Internet and spawning a positive, ongoing dialogue between atheists and believers.

I Sold My Soul on eBay tells how and why Mehta became an atheist and features his latest church critiques, including descriptions of his visits to some of the best-known churches in the country. His observations will surprise and challenge you, revealing how the church comes across to those outside the faith. Who better than a nonbeliever to offer an eye-opening assessment of how the gospel is being presented–and the elements that enhance or detract from the presentation.

Mehta announced prior to his churchgoing odyssey that he would watch for any signs of God’s existence. After spending Sunday mornings in some of the nation’s leading churches, what happened to the man who sold his soul on eBay? Did attending church change his lack of belief? The answers can be found inside.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for those interested in how their religion is viewed.......2007-08-29

I found the book I Sold My Soul on eBay a must read for anyone who is looking to impact the nonreligious community.

It's a story of a young man, Hemant Mehta, who decides to auction off his willingness to attend church, synagogue, or temple. The winning bid of $504 by Jim Henderson, propels Hemant into the public's eye. The unique story is picked up by various national media outlets. Jim and Hemant come to an agreement, where in the next year Hemant will attend 15 different churches, observe and fill out a survey that is posted on Jim Henderson's website.

Hemant Mehta also relates his journey of how he left the faith of his childhood, Jainism, and has embraced atheism. As he has embraced atheism he has discovered that there are very few atheists groups that have formed in colleges around the nation. In an effort to right this wrong, he relates how with one other student in his second year at University of Illinois-Chicago, he forms the group, Students WithOut Religious Dogma or SWORD.

About half of the book details his insights gleaned from attending these churches; they range from small churches of less than 100 in rural Dekalb, Illinois to mega-churches of thousands. He not only varies the size of the church, but also seeks out ethnically diverse churches. Most of the churches understandably were in his native state of Illinois, but he did make a couple forays, one to Houston and another to Colorado Springs. On his trip to Houston one church he attends is Lakewood Church the mega-church of Joel Olsteen. In Colorado Springs he attends Ted Hagard's New Life Church while Ted is still senior pastor and has an interesting exchange with Pastor Ted.

At times it was almost like reading a cultural anthropology book, and he's vulnerable enough to explain what it would take for him to believe the claims of Christ written in the Bible. He is always respectful in writing about his experience. The publisher also includes a helpful a small group discussion guide at the end of the book.

Sometimes we need fresh eyes to view our experiences in church.

Armchair Interview says: Hemant Mehta does an excellent job in that.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective from Outside the Pew........2007-08-27

When I was in college I attended a Sunday worship service at a Pentecostal church with a friend. On this particular Sunday, my friend had also invited some non-Christian friends of hers to attend the service with us. I could tell by their reactions during the service that it wasn't like anything they had ever experienced before. After the service, we gathered together for a discussion over lunch. I learned a lot from that discussion and I believe it was rewarding and enriching opportunity for all of us. We learned more about my friend and what she believed and her non-Christian friends learned that even though I shared many of the same beliefs with my friend, we differed in the ways in which we expressed worship to God during a typical Sunday service. Reading I SOLD MY SOUL ON EBAY reminded me of that experience and others like it that I have had in my life.

The book is written by Hemant Mehta, a self-described friendly atheist who offered people the opportunity to "buy" him and send him to church; whoever won the auction would be able to send him to an hour of church for every ten dollars bid. The winning bid was for $504 by author and former pastor, Jim Henderson. Henderson reached an agreement with Mehta where Mehta wouldn't just attend one Christian church, but would attend a variety of churches: small churches, large churches, mega-churches, rural churches, inner-city churches, traditional churches, and non-traditional churches. Mehta posted his observations about his visits on his website and offered to help the pastors and church members make their services more welcoming to non-Christians. I SOLD MY SOUL ON EBAY is a result of Mehta's experiences.

The book is divided into ten chapters, but really has three major sections. In the first part of the book Mehta explains his background, why he became an atheist, how the eBay auction came about, and what atheists in general believe. The second part of the book goes into the detail of Mehta's visits to different churches. He explains his impressions about the places he attended, what went on during the services, and his reactions. In the final section of the book Mehta tells what he believes churches are doing well, what they could do better, and what it would take him to convert to Christianity.

I've known some atheists during my life and have some close friends who are agnostic. However, I still enjoyed reading the first section of the book about what atheists believe. It gave me a different perspective from what I am accustomed. I also enjoyed reading about Mehta's visits to the different churches. Some of his observations are hilarious, some are misguided, and some are insightful.

One of Mehta's biggest complaints is that many Christian churches aren't as welcoming to outsiders as they should be. I don't think many believers realize this and it is helpful that someone from the outside makes the observation. I realize that churches aren't perfect, because churches and even the Church itself is composed of people. We all have flaws, issues, and quirks and even in the most loving environment these things can become distractions. Yet, God uses us despite our flaws. Another observation that I found particularly insightful is how many people who attend church and claim to be Christians really don't seem to know why they do the things they do during services or even why they believe what they profess to believe. As a whole, we can be a terribly ignorant people.

At the same time, there are suggests that Mehta make that I feel are misguided. For instance, several times in the book Mehta mentions that he heard the term "lost" being used to refer to non-believers such as himself. He says that "every time I heard this, I felt insulted." (p. 148). I can understand why Mehta would feel insulted. However, I don't believe that we Christians should stop using the term. Mehta and those who share beliefs similar to his don't feel that they are lost and they don't think they need to be saved from anything. However, a core tenant of Christianity is that those who aren't followers of Jesus cannot receive the gift of eternal life. Those who don't believe are lost because when they die, they will receive punishment in Hell and at the end of time will be thrown into oblivion for eternity. Now, that's not to say that the life of a non-believer has no meaning because Christianity teaches that every life is precious. However, unless a person chooses to follow Christ, they cannot receive eternal life.

Despite these misunderstandings, I SOLD MY SOUL ON EBAY is an especially useful book that Christians should read. It can be quite helpful hearing a different perspective from someone who normally lives outside of the pew.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Provocative.......2007-08-23

A book about Christianity by an atheist? Another hatched job, right? Actually no. Hement Mehta is not an angry atheist. Yes, he's a nonbeliever, but he's seeking answers. He auctioned off the opportunity for the winning bidder to send him to church, and got more than he planned. He ended up attending a lot of worship services covering a wide range of denominations, and both large and small churches. He plays fair, giving a serious critique of what he saw, what worked for him, and what didn't. Since we approach the subject from different perspectives we don't always agree. I'm coming at it from a basis of faith, while he admits he doesn't have faith in much except himself and what he can prove from logic. We did agree on several things though, and I came away with a stronger conviction of what I have believed for some time, that we Christians need to stop and evaluate what we are doing to show Jesus to nonbelievers. We've come a long way from the simple teachings of the Savior we claim to follow, sometimes going in the wrong direction. Menta asks a lot of questions, and I didn't always have the answer. He made me think about what I believe and why. Sometimes it's good to see what the other side thinks, and we need to remember that people who don't believe the way we do are not always our enemies. I recommend I Sold My Soul On eBay for both believers and nonbelievers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read, I highly recommend it.......2007-07-01

I grew liberally Catholic and eventually became a Deist. I knew all about other faiths, but never heard anything about atheists, or anyone else who didn't believe in some sort of higher power. I didn't even meet an atheist till I was 13, and usually what I did hear of them revolved around court cases and the whole "they want to take away our religious rights" line. This book and going to Hemant's online blog (www.friendlyatheist.com)opened a whole world to me-about how many atheists really are (most don't want to "ban" religion, they just don't want it in our goverment or in their faces), what their views are on things, how many of them there are, and how many of the stereotypes just aren't true. If you grew up in a evangelical christian home, you probably haven't heard much about atheists, and what you have heard was probably negative. I highly encourage you to read this book and go to the blog to get a different persepctive: it will open your eyes. You probably won't change your beliefs, but you will at least see what the other side is REALLY like.

What I really love about this book is Hemant's open-mindedness and willingness to talk with people who do not share his beliefs. I wish everyone would do that, the world would be a much better place. I also admire how even when he talks in the book about being dissed on the radio by Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort (embarassments)-he doesn't diss them back, he just explains how he feels in a logical, concrete way, without being antagonistic. He really does come across as much more reasonable than they do.

Anyways, read the book-it's great and well written and has something anyone can learn from no matter what your background is.

Hemant Mehta, the "eBay atheist" who agreed to go to the churches of choice of the winning bidder, pens this intriguing, often humorous and sometimes disturbing look at today's Christian churches in I SOLD MY SOUL ON eBAY.

Mehta begins by unpacking his own upbringing in the Jain religion, detailing what led him to give up his faith at age 14. As an adult, however, he freely explored the deepest questions of religion. An intellectual and leader in the Secular Student Alliance, he was puzzled at the hostility against his group by Christian organizations. "What were they so worried about, that someone would hear a new idea?" After deciding he wanted to learn more about Christianity, Mehta posted a "send an atheist to his local church" opportunity on eBay --- with surprising results.

For $504, Jim Henderson, author of EVANGELISM WITHOUT ADDITIVES, won the right to send Mehta to church. Mehta attended 15 churches in four states, encompassing a wide range of church communities: from small-town parishes to megachurches. He then filled out a survey for each one and blogged about his visits on his website.

Mehta, who calls himself a "friendly atheist," believes he is part of the demographic that most churches want to reach. "But based on what I have experienced, the things many churches are doing on Saturday night or Sunday morning are not the things that will pull in those who share my mind-set." While attending the churches, Mehta says, "I kept running across a consistent and troubling truth about American Christianity." People of faith, he says, make enemies of those who don't believe in the same God they do by displaying a negative attitude toward anyone outside the religious community.

Another observation: "Any religion that wants to keep people believing should do one simple thing: instead of limiting religious teaching to matters of what to do and how to do it, tell people why they are saying certain words, performing certain rituals, and adhering to certain beliefs." He often found himself confused by traditions or liturgy that he had no background for. Christian readers will wince at some of his experiences (after a scathing interview with Kirk Cameron on the radio, he asks, "...are comments meant to embarrass a guest and a lack of kindness really accurate representations of Christian compassion?")

After detailing several of his visits in four middle chapters, Mehta offers some practical advice to those who want to reach non-Christians. Talk to us (without preaching to us), he writes. Have a conversation with us about a broad range of topics (religion doesn't dominate our thinking). Shorten the singing time.

Pastors and their messages were of primary importance, he says. Preach relevant sermons. Explain why a Bible story has meaning today. Don't talk as if non-Christians are the enemy. Remember to appeal to an atheist's intellect, not his emotions. Offer opportunities to ask questions. Invite someone who is an atheist or agnostic to have a friendly public dialogue.

The congregation is not off the hook. He urges attendees to pay attention in church. "If you don't like church, then don't go to church." Be on time if you respect your church. Get involved in social justice issues in your community --- feeding the hungry, educating the illiterate, assisting the poor. Actions, he says, speak louder than words.

Christian readers looking for the seemingly inevitable conversion scene at the end of the story will be disappointed. Mehta says he went to church looking for answers to the big questions in life, and came away unconvinced that Christianity had them. If any church could have converted him, he believes it was Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois. "It was a place where I could think about the message after I left."

In the foreword to the book, author and pastor Rob Bell (SEX GOD, VELVET ELVIS) says that "Lots of people in lots of churches will find this book very helpful in their efforts to put a face on God for the world we live in...prophets can come from the most unexpected places, can't they?" Excellent food for thought. A study guide for small group use at the end of the book will help Christians explore the ideas presented here more thoroughly.

4 out of 5 stars Ideal for young teens.......2007-07-13

I bought this book for my son who is 16 years old. My intentions were to give him something he could use to express his feelings and thoughts without the fear of judgments. A place that was strictly his own - for his eyes only. My son, reluctantly, accepted the book. Judging by the way he looked at me, I could tell he was thinking "what's up with my mom giving me this?" It took a few minutes before he took a quick glance through it, finally, he commented that he thought it was okay. He said the questions and style of the book were alright and he might use it. In adult language that means he did like it and he might actually use it. Recently, I asked him if he had written in it yet and he said yes. I was thrilled. The fact that he wrote in it already says this is a good one to give your teen - especially a young boy teen.

    3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-05-13

I have a feeling that when I finish writing in this book, it will be a very special part of my life, because many of the questions are deep and you really have to think to answer them. What I didn't like is that sometimes you have to think TOO much because some questions are really broad. For example, "What are some of the funniest things that ever happened to you?" I really can't recall THE funniest things over the course of my whole life. But overall, this book was cool.

5 out of 5 stars Great journaling experience.......2007-02-01

I purchased this for my teen-age son and others in the series for my daughter and as gifts. The artwork is interesting, the suggested topics are relevant to the age group, and it makes it more interesting than just listing what you did today. It is not dated like a daily journal, so you can use it when and how you want. I have also found that kids like these journals better than a blank book, which can be overwhelming. I wish I had this when I was a kid.

5 out of 5 stars Author, Linda Kranz, has created another winner!.......2000-05-05

Third in a series of journals for the whole family, Linda Kranz has designed Through My Eyes, A Journal for Teens to help young men and women explore their relationship with their parents, friends, others and themselves. Filled with Ms. Kranz's signature thought-starters such as "If you could look ahead five years, what do you think you would see?" this gem of a journal for teens will have your son or daughter or other teen family members or friends wanting to take it to their "special place" and being filling in the pages. Young people, especially teenagers need the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings to themselves and this journal is an ideal way to help teens begin that self-exploration

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful thought provoking journal.......1999-12-28

I purchased this book for my daughter for Christmas. She is only 9 years old and dislikes doing any creative writing. Christmas evening she disappeared into her room with this journal and wrote for hours. I will buy this journal again in a few years so that she can compare and look back at how she has changed as she becomes a young woman. The questions are thought provoking and introspective. This book is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Great for helping children to understand autism!.......2006-04-04

I just read this book and it is a great way to explain the characteristics of autism to young children. Autism is a very complex subject and it's very hard to bring it down to a child's level. My son has autism and has many of the traits mentioned in this book. The author explains them all very well. The author gives suggestions on how to personalize the story for other families/children. This is great - then you can take your personalized story to your church, school or even young members of your family to help them to understand autism.

5 out of 5 stars The most articulate champion of Israel .......2006-05-03

Abba Eban was Israel's most articulate and persuasive Israeli spokesman to the world. His remarkable presentation of Israel's case at the time of the Six- Day War made many friends for Israel. He was a career diplomat of enormous intelligence and skill. In this work he looks at the struggle of Israel for statehood, recognition and peace with its neighbors. He is an inside observer , and one who does not refraim from criticism where he feels it due. His great intelligence and wisdom, his understanding of diplomacy and political reality are revealed in every page of this volume.
Read this book and you not only get to know about the history and development of Israel you also get to feel and perceive the heart and mind of one of its greatest representatives.

5 out of 5 stars Personal Witness revisited.......2003-12-13

After completing Paul Thompson's History of the Jews, I revisited my first reading in '95 of Personal Witness. This reading was much more meaningful in light of Thompson's outstanding work. Eban's cogent testimony of Israel's struggle for nationhood was filled with dextrous gems of awesome and often droll prose.

Eban's book also gives valuable insight into the workings of the United Nations and its genuine as opposed to perceived role in world government. His insights on the character of national leaders and venerated diplomats is frosting on the cake.

Highly recommend this difficult to lay down book for some eye-opening lucidation on Israel and its struggle against absurd obstacles.

    Book Description

A week after her birth, Dan Kennedy's daughter, Becky, was diagnosed with achondroplasia, the most common type of dwarfism. Reassured by doctors that Becky would have normal intelligence and life span, Kennedy and his wife quickly adjusted to the reality of her condition. Little People weaves the moving story of Kennedy's personal experiences with a fascinating investigation into dwarfism. Kennedy traces the attitudes toward dwarfs throughout history and describes with humor and compassion the difficulties little people face in a world designed for the 'average-sized.' In telling his story, Kennedy confronts the deepest of parental fears: What if my child is different? His search for an answer provides a penetrating look at how our culture of diversity-of respect for differences-clashes with the belief that we have a right to the so-called perfect child. Taking on the controversial issue of designer genetics, Kennedy argues that there is real cultural value to preserving differences and that eliminating them will harm society in unpredictable ways.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful book.......2006-09-26

I love this book, As a parent of a 14 month old boy with dwarfism, recently adopted from Liberia ( not yet home unfortunately) I've been trying to learn and read as much as I can about dwarfism. This is the first and only book ( so far)I've read on the subject. It is so well written and I love how he goes from his own personal story to many other personal stories of people with dwarfim.
Although I do not agree with his implied view of God and Biblical religion, I find his thoughts insightful and thought provoking. I have bought 2 more of these books to give as gifts this year.
    Thank you Dan Kennedy!

5 out of 5 stars An open and honest memoir and social commentary.......2005-02-25

Dan Kennedy author grapples honestly and agonizingly with the conflict between our culture of diversity, the reality of disability, and every parent's wish for a healthy typical child. With its intertwining of memoir and social commentary, it is at once a captivating and enlightening read skillfully crafted by award wining journalist Dan Kennedy.

The author's purpose is to find purpose and meaning in his daughter's life. He was determined for it to be positive and upbeat. Meanwhile his wife was more focused on her daughter's day to day care including the medical crisis of her early life when Becky was near death and required a tracheotomy to survive. The author's honest acknowledgment of these divergent viewpoints is but one example of his penetrating insight into the complexities of his family life.

The reader is challenged to consider the contrast between genetic difference and genetic defect in a society which says that differences are good and defects are bad. Can one person's defect be another person's difference? What are the moral and ethical implications of eliminating differences ranging from dwarfism to Down syndrome and beyond to manic depression, homosexuality, etc. through designer genetics? What will be the impact upon society? Kennedy explores dwarfism from ancient times, when dwarfs were revered in some cultures, to modern eras where they were featured in freak shows and treated as guinea pigs by Nazi scientists. Through a historical perspective he helps the reader to grasp that there has never been a better time to be outside the mainstream and to embrace one's identity-whether one is physically or mentally challenged or gay. Yet most parents do not wish these differences for their children, and the Kennedys would not have chosen dwarfism for their daughter.

The disability consciousness of our present era sprang to life in the second half of the twentieth century on the ashes of Dachau and Auschwitz, where millions of Jews, homosexuals, and people with disabilities were exterminated. As an antidote to American self-righteousness, the author reminds us of the eugenics movement which was led by the United States and Great Britain in the early part of the twentieth century and mandated the sterilization of people with mental retardation and mental illness. The Nazis of course took this a giant step further because there was no respect for individual rights or checks and balances to keep eugenic impulses at least in some control.

Throughout the book, Kennedy helps us to visit his conundrum where he is held in the grip of two opposing ideas-that, on the one hand, his child is imperfect and different and will always be, while on the other hand, Becky is perfect just as she is. As the parent of an adult child with autism, I understand Kennedy's dilemma all to well. It is a Rubik's cube for a society that includes and celebrates differences-where the solutions to the puzzle are individual and unique. Through his involvement with the Little People of America and his vivid accounts of interviews with numerous adult dwarfs, Kennedy leads his reader to a deeper appreciation for diversity.

As a fellow parent and writer, what I value most about Little People is the author's openness and integrity in looking at the hard facts of his family's life. He does not escape for long into the world of intellect and social commentary. He does not deny how hard it can be to care for the needs of a sick child, particularly on his wife, Barbara, who he observes to have some symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder even years after Becky could breathe on her own. As a father, when he tells Becky, that there is nothing wrong with being a dwarf, it doesn't ring true for her. Her differences are a problem for her in navigating the world such as when younger children don't believe she is older than them or when she imagines who will want to date her. So there are no easy answers, no platitudes to hide behind-Kennedy is left with the simple and profound challenge to just be the best father he can for Becky. And his readers are left with a dose of compassion and shared wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Little People by Dan Kennedy.......2003-12-08

A well-written and interesting look at the human side of dwarfism, including dwarfism's repercussions to the individual and family members. Author Dan Kennedy has made a concerted effort to include as many facets of dwarfism as possible, things that others can never know without reading a book like this. This book is not just for little people themselves and families involved with dwarfism, but doctors and other healthcare professionals, teachers, therapists, and anyone interested in learning more about the strength of the human spirit. A very engaging and worthwhile book!

    5 out of 5 stars Little People.......2003-12-05

Dans book is a must read for anyone with an interest in Dwarfism, be it a family member, friend or collegue or just a general interest. There is something for everyone, the heartfelt journey of Dan`s daughter, Becky as she spends her early years hooked to machines due to her achondroplasia and her growth into a young woman continues throughout, and inbetween the reader is introduced to other topics relating to dwarfism including the history of dwarfism, the Little People of America, Medical Doctors, Religious questioning to name a few.
I found it hard to put the book down once I had started to read it. As an average height parent with a child with achondroplasia myself I found the book a very valuable read and I learnt a lot, the book also leads the way for further research if one so wishes.

    5 out of 5 stars Little People: A review.......2003-12-05

One month ago I bought this book here on Amazon and it was my intention to keep it on the bookshelf gathering dust until semester break when it would be my reading material for the flight home. I briefly cracked it open & thought I could peek at the opening paragraph just to get a sense of the book then put it down. WRONG! It sucked me in and for the next 2 days I ignored all my classwork in order to finish it. Without an ounce of hyperbole this is the best book about dwarfs & dwarfism, our community and our history I have read. It is well written, interesting, informative, and respectful but without ever inching towards the "Super-Crip" mentality so many books about people of difference tend to fall into.

This is a wonderful book and I encourage everyone to read it. When finished, I encourage people to pass it onto others who know nothing about dwarfism in order to teach people of our history. To those in school, pass it onto your office of students with disabilities and the professors who teach classes in multicultural issues. I hope that someday Becky will realize this is a love letter her father has written to and about her.
