5 out of 5 stars Twelfth Night : An amazing book.......2007-08-17

Twelfth Night is a very amazing book full of true love, confusion, and adventure. It starts out with a shipwreck on a fictious island of Illyria where Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are staying and neither of them thinks the other is alive. So therefore, they both go into Illyira and Viola posing as a man who is a messenger for Duke Orisno. Results in big trouble for all of them in Illyria. This is only some events that happen in the book. Other things are Duke Orsino is madly in love with Olivia who does not love him. Malvolio thinking Olivia loves him when she doesn't. Things just aren't going so well in Illyria for all the characters. But overall this is an excellent book and I truly enjoyed reading it.

5 out of 5 stars great play.......2007-01-01

I saw she's the man in theaters, then I went on the internet and read about it. Then I found out it is based on twelfth night. So I read the play and I like it. I've also read A midsummer night's dream. I like twelfth night more. It's a great play.

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedy.......2005-12-16

This play is about a girl who goes under cover as a man to try to find her twin brother who was lost in a shipwreck. she goes to work for the self indulgent Duke Orsino. the play is filled with comedic events such as the Duchess Olivia falls love with the main character, Viola, because Olivia thinks Viola is a man, as well as the drunken antics of Sir Toby and Sir Andrew. overall it was a very funny play and I enjoyed reading it and I would reccoment it to anyone who likes Shakespeare.

The wording, the same as with any shakespeare play, was a little hard to get used to. When reading it I would get a vague understanding what the character was saying but then I would chekc the definition of specific words that are on the the opposite page. It would then become clear to me what was happening in the play. I enjoyed the comedic flow of the story. the series of different converging plots made for a little difficult comprehension but it all came together at the end of the play. This was definitely a funny play, and it was even better when I saw it on stage. There seems to be so much one misses when just reading a play, but when one sees it on stage the overall understanding of what is happening and why is greater. I thouroughly enjoyed reading the play as well as seeing it on stage and it was overall a solid comedy by William Shakespeare.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book for beginners.......2007-10-08

this is a really good book for beginners teaches you how to make your own spell and all of the sorts.in the beginning he gives his own veiws on the dark side and allow anyone who's competent to understand it better...

    1 out of 5 stars A Gothic Silver RavenWolf.......2006-11-10

This book is a laugh and not much else. This guy is the uberpale, black-eyeliner-wearing, black-hair-dying version of Silver RavenWolf: cheesy, full of himself and completely useless.

Aside from that, the idea of nocturnal witchcraft is highly impractical. Yes, a lot of us are night people and work better at night. But this guy is practically suggesting a WORSHIP of the night, like some sort of Wiccan vampire or something.

Don't waste your money or time on this book. You have better things to do at night, like REAL witchcraft, or even sleep!

    5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2006-05-29

Although most people have a misconception of witchcraft, it is only because they hate and fear what they do not understand. This book explains everything very well, and is easy to relate to if you are more of a "night" person that feels more empowered by the night. I related to this book so well because he makes references about his life habits and interests that seemed to be similar to my own.

    2 out of 5 stars Pseudo-religionism.......2006-02-11

I knocked this book from someone that ordered it, but got to the store after me :-). I made the mistake to buy the book by the sound of its title. And author. I fell for it this time..... It is not the first Konstantinos text I buy and must say, this one helped me make up my mind. It seems highly obvious that the author is abusing the commercial value of the "black arts" to get to the spectrum of rebellious teenagers that would "sell their soul" just to make a statement at large. Well well, if that aren't following the routes of the christian church we so dire to critisize.... The practical aspects are not well thought through and I suspect, just as unknown to the author as to the guys that made the front page. Practise is either made as difficult as possible, or serves as an example of the inability of the author to explain some basic concepts. It does show that the author is jack of all trades, but master of none. I would advise readers that are seriously interested in the topic to acquire the texts of Frater U.D., which I find much more fascinating, as well as educational. I would therefore advise this text for any pseudo-black-art-wannabe with little interest in the occult.

    5 out of 5 stars Quality Work.......2005-08-31

with all the flower and crystal type new age books on the market claiming to "know" the truth about magick it is nice to see a book that takes a realistic look at an often misunderstood faith. now this is not to say that nocturnal magick is more or less than any other legitimate forms of goddess/god worship merely this book is a perfectly written overview of one aspect of the religion. Konstantinos is an excellent writer who manages to get into the history and logistical aspects of night time magick without it reading like a shopping list or sounding like a 101 course. a perfect book for those who wish to learn something not extracted from ignorant 30-second soundbytes on the evening news, a must read and highly recommended.

Frantic and entertaining in a guilty sort of way, Nights of Ice is like Endurance on steroids. The book presents eight true stories of disaster and survival involving commercial fisherman off the coast of Alaska (said to be one of America's most dangerous occupations). Included are tales of subzero temperatures, 100 mph winds, 60-foot-high waves, boats encased in ice and capsized, men trapped underwater, and other horrors. Author Spike Walker, who interviewed many of the survivors in compiling this book, is no stranger to such tales of the high seas; he worked as a commercial fisherman off the Alaska coast and wrote about it in Working on the Edge.

Nights of Ice begins promisingly enough but unfortunately gives way to a sensationalism that cheapens the whole affair: "At that moment, Bruce Hinman's past life flashed before his very eyes. Launched instantaneously through time, he watched the events of his life play out before him...they flashed and froze there in his consciousness, in a kind of nostalgic collage of all that had once mattered in his life." As a result, there are a lot of unintentionally funny moments. Despite its problems, though, Nights of Ice is fun to read, and lovers of true-adventure stories or those interested in the dangers of the Alaskan fishing industry should enjoy it. --Andy Boynton

    Book Description

Spike Walker has spent more than a decade fishing in the subzero hell of Alaska's coastal waters. This collection--coming on the heels of his classic memoir Working on the Edge--is a testament to the courage of those who brave nature's wrath each fishing season, and to the uncontrolled power of nature herself... The crewmen in Nights of Ice face a constant onslaught of roaring waves, stories-high swells, and life-stealing ice. Tested by the elements, these seamen battle for their vessels and their lives, on every page evincing a level of courage and a will to live seldom found elsewhere in modern society.

A MUST READ for anyone interested in surviaval, Adventure, Commercial Fishing or just a great read! If you like the show Deadliest Catch you will love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for fans of "The Most Dangerous Catch".......2007-07-28

Better than anything that could be shown on TV - you feel each and every up and down of the ship as Spike Walker spins the yarn of the life of each and every Berring Sea fisherman... must purchase "Working the Edge" also by him FIRST before reading this book. Like to see it available in a normal paperback format also for easier reading.

4 out of 5 stars For "Deadliest Catch" junkies!.......2006-06-19

As a huge fan of "Deadliest Catch" on the Discovery Channel I'm very interested in learning the true stories of these fishermen. Watching the show reminds me how easy my life is and kinda boring too! Spike Walker's "Nights of Ice" is a non-fiction compilation of stories about rescues of fishing ships in the waters around Alaska.

He does a good job painting a picture of the dangers involved for both the stranded fishermen as well as the rescue workers. Reading this book gave me a better insight into the world these men live in - and the daily dangers they face. It reads rather quickly - and is a very easy to read book.

My one complaint about "Nights of Ice" is that the author tends to lean toward melodrama when describing much of the action. It just seems exaggerated to slightly beyond belief. My other caution would be, the stories start to sound alike. Boat in trouble, men in trouble, rescue made.

I would have liked more of the day to day living experienced onboard, as well as the actual near-death (or in some cases death) faced by the fishermen.

    3 out of 5 stars entertaining subject--marginal writing.......2002-09-05

I read this on a trip to Alaska, so I got into it's "spirit" on location. The stories are quite entertaining, but when writers make junior-varsity comments and mistakes, it makes me wonder about the veracity of the actual stories:
    1) Does everyone see their entire lives flash before their eyes when they are near death?
    2) Some guy's one-year old child asks him if he is Santa Claus upon his return from an ordeal at sea. Clearly Spike has never spent time with a one-year old; not only can very few of them speak more than a word or two, but this one is so eloquent and knowledgeable that he thinks the old man is Kris himself!
    3) The helicopter pilot makes it to a "small village airport" just before running out of fuel (which means it must have been between 5-10 minutes from the rescue locale since they only had 30 minutes of fuel left before the rescue attempt(hmmmm), but somehow a C-130 can get in and out of there to send them home while the chopper gets an inspection (hmmm hmmmm).
    I'll leave it at that...

4 out of 5 stars Nights of Ice ... Spike Walker is great read.......2001-04-04

Having lived my entire life in and around Seattle, In March 2001, I ventured North to Alaska to visit my daughter and her family. While there I picked up "Nights of Ice".

Spike Walker's subject matter is, first of all, relevant to anyone who has lived near the sea. The Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska, as one non-fisherman said, "I can't drink it all and I'm damned sure I can't swim that far."

Life at sea in a boat, rolling and plowing through the next wave, gets into some folks blood. I'm sure it's that way with fishermen and women but the money don't hurt either. In any case its a perilous life.

Nights of Ice takes us along for a ride with people, real people, who have experienced the worst the sea has to offer. Walker's intimate knowledge of workin' the boats has us searching for lights in a "can't see your hand in front of your face" stateroom, attempting, frantically, to pull on the survival suit. We are terrified of the boat goin' down with us still on board. We gasp for air and our heart seems to stop when we hit the 37 degree water. We, along with actual survivors, use every ounce of strength and resource our bodies are able to muster in order to survive.

Nights of Ice and its individual, sometimes heroic, stories are an adventure in itself.

With infections curiosity, a lyrical, intimate tone, and an eye for nighttime beauties both natural and man-made, he paints a captivating portrait of our hours in darkness.

5 out of 5 stars Magic Journey from Dusk to Dawn.......2006-02-17

This highly unusual examination of the phases of night will ensure that never again will you be oblivious of them. The author begins with the three stages of twilight---civil twilight, nautical twilight, and astronomical twilight, and ends with first light, the beginning of dawn.

In between he takes you through all the phases humans have assigned to the hours: dinner hour, children's bedtime, fireworks festivals, ghost- walking hours. Then there are the natural ones, such as the hour the nocturnal animals come out, stages of sleep, the best times for astronomical observations.

He does this in a poetic and engaging way, for this is no dry recitation of facts. Each hour has its own delights, and he exults in celebrating them and saluting them.

My only caveat is that his 'hours' are based on a northern European/American rhythm of the day. For them, "It is 11 pm and a great many people are asleep"---but in Spain they are just sitting down to dinner! It helps to remember the great variety of human behaviors in just about everything.

Read this book and fall in love with night!

    2 out of 5 stars Not a favourite.......2006-01-29

Last night I "finished" Acquainted with the Night: Excursions through the world after dark by Christopher Dewdney. I invoke the double quotation marks because I skimmed an awful lot of this book. That said, it did contain a great number of very interesting passages; I was greatly interested in the nocturnal animals, the stages of sleep, some of the astronomy etc. Much of the book is taken up by two-plus pages of waxing lyrical, that borders on purple, about the upcoming topic at the start of every chapter, and some of the most interesting fodder is reduced to what amounts to the listing of facts with little exposition. In these cases, we are being told many things we really already new. The section on mythology and others read like filler, and had a tenuous link to the topic at best anyway. Another problem was that the author intruded a little too much with very subjective (and, one might argue, ill thought out) comments. e.g. on the subject of famous insomniacs, the author comments on Marilyn Monroe:

Her pharmeceutical toolkit included Sulfathallidine, Librium, and the phenobarbital Nembutal. In the last year of her life it was thought she was taking up to twenty Nembutals a day. Although some acquaintances thought her death was suicide, the consensus was that it was brought about by an accidental overdose in combination with alcohol. In a sense, insomnia killed Marilyn Monroe.

I guess, in the sense that a guy with an itchy nose decides to scratch it with a chainsaw - you could say an itch killed the man. Hyperbole becomes nobody, least of all a non-fiction writer.

There are strange comments like this throughout the book. I'd say if you're interested in one area in particular, find a book on those subjects instead of this jack of all trades that barely gives enough time to any of the issues.

    3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but..........2005-03-28

Ok, I did like this book. There were times, many times however, I wished it would drop the poetics and pick up the pace. There are many interesting FACTS in this book sprinkled through philosophy and poetics. Some of the potics just aren't that interesting to me. I'd say buy the paperback. It's a good decent book but not library worthy...read it and pass it on.

    Chris

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous writing; inelligent and full of poetry........2004-06-20

As a night owl and poetry-lover, I was intrigued by the title alone. Dewdney's writing is gorgeous: at turns it's funny, poignant, and illuminating. It's easy to tell the writer is a poet. At the same time, it's full of fascinating trivia and pieces of knowledge, covering history, physics, literature, astronomy, psychology, and philosophy.

    5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2007-03-07

This is one of the best romance novels I have ever read, especially in the genre of romantic suspense. You cannot help but love both Gray and Faith for their vulnerability and sheer tenacity. Everything about the novel, from the extensive personal histories to the verdant backdrop of the Lousiana bayou brings the reader into their story. This one is a keeper as you'll want to read it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars The most intense romance I've read in a long time!.......2007-01-29

If Howard has written a more intense romance than After The Night, I'd like to read it. So far, IMO this is her best work though I have a few other of her titles on my keeper shelf. I loved this book because the H & H were so well-developed. I grew up with them, felt their struggles and pain and Gray is so romance material yet 'real'. Howard lets him be human by not white-washing him and though some readers may be upset by the thought of the heroine still desiring him after what he did to her family, it only made Gray real rather than pandering to a romance reader's perception of what a hero ought NOT to be.

The sensuality was right off the scale and Howard managed to set off fireworks everytime Gray and Faith went near each other. When they do make love, it was everything I wanted it to be. Gray was everything I wanted him to be and Faith was everything a heroine ought to be.

These two characters are my favorite romance hero and heroine! The book is so well-written that no epilogue was needed (I personally dislike them as it shows me the author wasn't satisfied with her ending) but the prologue set the stage marvellously.

After The Night alone makes me agree that Howard is the Queen of Contemporary Romance. It's a pity her recent works have become more suspense than romance. I wish this trend would stop.

    5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!!.......2006-12-09

Started reading and couldn't put it down... The book was fast paced, fun, and the characters were wonderful. I have read several of her books, but this one is the best so far.

    5 out of 5 stars Linda Howard's Best.......2006-11-25

I have read everything that Linda Howard has written and this book is in my top 5. I love the main charaters and want them to work out their problems. I keep this book on my shelf to re-read when I need a lift.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.........Will stay with you for a long time........2006-08-10

Linda Howard does it again. This book exactly shows what her writing is all about. Read this book and you will be more than pleased. Guranteed!

    Book Description

Here are the books that help teach Shakespeare plays without the teacher constantly needing to explain and define Elizabethan terms, slang, and other ways of expression that are different from our own. Each play is presented with Shakespeare's original lines on each left-hand page, and a modern, easy-to-understand "translation" on the facing right-hand page. All dramas are complete, with every original Shakespearian line, and a full-length modern rendition of the text.

I have my degree in English... I like reading and teaching with this version as "help" not as a substitution. It gives a clearer understanding to Shakespeare for people who have difficulty with it.

5 out of 5 stars The thrust of greatness.......2005-05-11

"Twelfth Night" is built upon the reliable comedic premise of mistaken identity. We begin with a shipwreck and a twin brother and sister, Sebastian and Viola, each of whom believes that the other has died at sea. Viola disguises herself as a boy and, assuming the name of Cesario, gets a job as a page for Orsino, the duke of Illyria, with whom she is in love. Orsino, however, is in love with a lofty young countess named Olivia, who has no interest in him and furthermore is mourning her own brother's recent death. Orsino dispatches Cesario/Viola to relay his amorous entreaties to Olivia, hoping that Cesario's youth may make him a more appealing messenger and soften her heart; but, wouldn't you know, Olivia becomes attracted to Cesario instead.

Meanwhile, Olivia's uncle, Sir Toby Belch, a knavish and idle aristocrat, is distressed by his niece's apparent desire to remain unmarried and tries to prepare his protege, the dimwitted but affable Sir Andrew Aguecheek, as a suitor. As part of a secondary plot, Sir Toby and Sir Andrew cooperate with Olivia's maid, Maria, to play a practical joke on Olivia's steward Malvolio, a humorless stuffed shirt whose conceit has finally piqued them all, by forging a letter that leads him to believe that his beautiful employer is in love with him. The ruse pays off, and Malvolio is imprisoned for madness after satisfactorily making a spectacle of himself in front of Olivia. Rounding out this retinue of clowns is Olivia's jester, named Feste, who, like King Lear's fool, seems to know more about the people around him than they know about themselves.

"Twelfth Night" is not just a comedy but, as the title indicates, a festive play in which songs and holiday spirit figure into the mood, providing a relaxed and joyous atmosphere in which the audience may feel privy to an elaborate jest. Certainly the plot is predictable, but its predictability is part of what makes it truly funny. We all (Shakespeare not the least of us) know how absurd it is that Viola disguised as a boy would look and sound so exactly like her twin brother as to make the two indistinguishable to the other characters in the play, but this is the indispensible device that holds the comedy together. Pretending to be someone or something you are not is the essence of the act, the idea encapsulated in "Twelfth Night" and expressed by Feste's sarcastic riposte to Sebastian, "Nothing that is so, is so."

5 out of 5 stars This is the best fooling, when all is done..........2005-05-05

After reading Twelfth Night, I realized that I have never read a better Shakespearean work. Not only does this have signs of comical mischef, but it has so many deeper meanings as well. The first deep message that I uncovered was the fact of gender confusion. Viola, using the power of a man to her advantage, begs the question to whether or not she is struggling with issues of gender identity. Her conversation even begs the question much futher, and by the end of the play leaves the reader with so many questions....This was a wonderful read, and quite possibly one of Shakespeare's best works.

5 out of 5 stars Some Plays Achieve Greatness!.......2003-08-24

Of all Shakespheare's plays I've read so far, I like Twelfth Night the best. I read it so many times I even lost my dependence on the modern language translation and I could read the Elizabethan language with the right conversational rhythm, losing all the awkwardness. I particularly liked the role of the snobby servant Malvolio, who tries to move up to the level of his Countess Olivia and leave his other "inferiors" behind. There is a couple of elaborate pranks being played upon characters in the play, in which Malvolio becomes one of the victims. Sir Toby, Sir Andrew, and Maria are the comic "team" that set these pranks in motion, all with amusing results. I just like the playfulness of these characters and their continual search for fun.

The main plot of the play is little less interesting involving the old disguised, mistaken, or confused identity ploy that Shakespheare uses from time to time. This time out a woman named Viola is a character pretending to be a man who is sent to woo Countess Olivia for Duke Orsino. She has a brother that looks just like her, especially now since she is dressed like a man. Identity confusion ensues. Also the pranks of the subplot mesh with the main plot for an amusing end.

    4 out of 5 stars What language!.......2003-01-09

I liked the play. It was pretty interesting. Shakespeare writes in the most beautiful language I know. Even though I did not understand everything, I really enjoyed reading it.
However I think the end is a little bit too facile. I do not like love stories with such easy happy endings. I suppose the play should have been a little bit longer so that Orsino could have had enough time to fall in love with Viola. This just went on too fast. Maybe it is the way men are. But well, such is life...

Most of the stars of this real-life Titanic story are stalwart British women who survived the disaster on that fateful night in the North Atlantic. The eyewitness accounts, eerily brought to life by survivors' own voices, include tales of astonishing bravery, selflessness, terror, and even the supernatural. The recollections of the lucid and matter-of-fact Eva Hart, who was only seven years old at the time, are particularly moving. She recalls the dreadful screaming she heard and her anguish as she watched the Titanic split in two and plunge into the sea.

Perhaps just as riveting as the memories of the sinking, and completely absent from the megahit motion picture, are the descriptions of the rescue by the Carpathia. The lengthy interview with the eloquent Sir Arthur Rostrun, captain of the Carpathia, is especially enlightening from a historical and nautical standpoint. He downplays the huge risks his own ship took in coming to the aid of the Titanic and is obviously still deeply troubled when he remembers learning that the "colossal nightmare of a fish" had sunk with so many passengers and crew unrescued.

The informative narration linking the interviews is read by Geoffrey Guiliano. His delivery occasionally veers into the realm of melodrama, which is somewhat incongruous given that the actual survivors speak with a great deal of restraint and a very British sense of self-control. Nevertheless, That Fateful Night is a valuable piece of oral history chock full of fascinating stories, each colored by the unique perspective of those who lived to tell their tales. (Running time: 144 minutes, two cassettes) --Elizabeth Laskey

    Book Description

Titanic.  The name invokes startling images of man's ill-conceived notion of invincibility and the consequences which occur when these ideas are proven mortally wrong.  It was the Edwardian Era, a time buzzing with the excitement and innocence of the new century. Titanic, the luxurious miracle of technology, set sail from Southampton, England with 2,207 passengers and crew on board.  They could never have envisioned the disaster which lay ahead.  On the starry night of April 14, 1912, when the great ship rushed almost headlong into an iceberg, the powerful behemoth was brought down and one of history's most tragic tales was born.

That Fateful Night tells the story of what happened in the words of those who lived it.  It is a collection of first person accounts, many exclusive, from the survivors of the legendary disaster who would never forget the events of those brief hours, their own experiences and the many hundreds who perished. Recorded over the course of the last two decades, many of these personal stories would be lost to time had these recordings not been made. These personal accounts recreate with unparalled immediacy and poignancy man at his best and worst.

Listeners will be moved by the words of  passengers and crew members, including Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon, Lady Duff Gordon, Eva Hart, Millvina Dean, Fourth Officer Boxhall, Second Officer Charles H. Lightoller, and others.  Also included are interviews with Sir Arthur H. Rostron, Captain of the Carpathia, scientist and author Dr. Robert Ballard, and Oscar-winning director of the film Titanic, James Cameron. That Fateful Night adds a unique and compelling dimension to the astounding body of work documenting this historic tragedy.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting...........2000-02-09

This CD, although excellent in recording Titanic survivors eyewitness accounts, just doesn't live up to my expectations. The abridged version, I feel, cuts out some interesting information and leaves standard information surviving. Interesting accounts on Captain Smith from Eva Heart and a well prepared "speech" from Captain Rostron add intrest to this CD. Good to have but could have been jucier.

Marcy Bryant remains shell shocked in Seneca Falls, New York from learning that her twin Jenny is the proprietor and madam of Manhattan's CLUB FANTASY. Unable to understand why her sister would become a prostitute especially since Jenny apparently loves her boyfriend, Marcy decides to write an erotic novel based on what she knows about her sibling's club and similar tales selling at the bookstore.

She shows Jenny a short story that her sibling says is excellent, but the first chapter of the novel is horrendous. Jenny insists that for Marcy to write with feeling she must understand her subject. The short story worked because Jenny claims Marcy was the star seeking her first real orgasm. She offers Marcy a chance to come to Club Fantasy, meet everyone and if interested taste "forbidden" fruit. Marcy agrees rationalizing she needs to better understand her sister.

At the club, pleasure giver Zack melts Marcy's brain and other body parts. As Marcy begins to appreciate what the body can do with the right partner, she falls in love with the male prostitute, but has no hope that a lion would desire a mouse; Zack reciprocates but assumes a nice woman would never want a relationship with a prostitute.

This erotic romantic sequel continues the escapades of the Bryant twins this time Marcy is the sex star of the tale. The story line will remind fans of the Devil and Miss Jones except that Zack is a heavenly hunk teaching the art of lovemaking while receiving lessons in love. Sub-genre fans will gain immense pleasure from this XXX tale, but be aware that your significant other better be handy (pun intended).

      Book Description

In Twelfth Night, one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies, love, ambition, mistaken identity, and a confusing shipwreck toss a motley crew of characters into a tangle of relationships that becomes hilariously complicated before it finally and wonderfully unfurls by the end of the play. The actual "Twelfth Night" is a night of festivity -- the final night of what used to be the extended period of celebration of the Christmas season -- and a night that marks the boundary between the time for games and the business of the everyday world. As the characters seek to right the wrongs of others and find true love, the play shows us a world that we would all choose to enjoy, if we only could, while illustrating Shakespeare's belief that love can be as delightfully confusing as any illusion, and as full of folly as it is of fun.
