4 out of 5 stars A more than solid middle chapter.......2007-02-27

As far as I was concerned, Ultimate Nightmare, the first chapter in Warren Ellis' re-imagining Ultimate Galactus trilogy, was spectacular. While Ultimate Secret doesn't live up to the first chapter of the trilogy, it is a more than solid middle chapter that sets up the pivotal things to come. Taking place briefly after Ultimate Nightmare, Ultimate Secret picks up with Nick Fury recruiting the Fantastic Four to help with a big problem: something called Gah Lak Tus is coming to destroy the planet and obliterate all mankind. What helps make this TPB good is Ellis' reinvention of Captain Marvel (or Mahr-Vell); an alien soldier posing as a human and fighting on our side. Iron Man, Thor, and Hawkeye are also here for the ride, as the stage is set for the apocalyptic events of Ultimate Extinction. Steve McNiven and Mark Bagley provide great artwork, and Ellis manages to churn out a compelling story while further fleshing out the relationship between Reed Richards and Sue Storm like he has during his run on Ultimate Fantastic Four. All in all, if you picked up Ultimate Nightmare, consider this a must read as the end is clearly in sight.

4 out of 5 stars vols 1 and 2 were very good, 3 was awful and ruined it all..........2007-02-14

in vol 2, the kree try to prevent mankind from gaining efficient space travel because they want us to remain earthbound for when the big g hits. vol 2 is very good, however i would not recommend this trilogy because vol 3 is so incredibly awful it made reading the first two volumes a waste of time. in addition, i hate the robot hive galactus idea. yes galactus is supposed to be a world eating force even when he's a big purple dude, but the big guy galactus is way cooler than this stupid idea. i just hope they don't stink up the fantastic four movies with the robot galactus idea (as rumored), but since the first ff movie was pretty bad i really have no hope.

5 out of 5 stars Warren Ellis at his best........2006-11-10

This series was great, the best of the ultimate titles.

4 out of 5 stars Gah Lak Tus is Coming!.......2006-06-29

Coming on the heels of Ultimate Nightmare, Ultimate Secret continues the Ultimate Galactus saga. Ultimate Secret features the Ultimates again, this time teamed with the Fantastic Four and Mar Vehl (the Ultimate version of Captain Marvel), a Kree warrior who decided to help Earth survive Gah Lak Tus's arrival, instead of watching the planet die, as the rest of the Kree are content to do. In fact, the Kree are so determined to see Earth die that they send a horde of robot/alien/bad guys to sabotage the space program (that Mar Vehl helped with) to ensure no Earthlings escape the coming doom.

I'm not typically a fan of the cosmic storylines, but this is the Ultimate Universe so I had to at least check it out. Writer Warren Ellis does a fine job with this series, particularly with the dialogue. The scenes with Thor, the Human Torch, and the Thing literally had me laughing out loud, and Ellis's take on Tony Stark and Carol Danvers is spot-on. The background information Ellis provides on Gah Lak Tus and the death of civilizations is pretty grim stuff, so the snappy dialogue helps keep the story fun. Also, since this is a middle chapter, the ending didn't offer much in the way of a satisfying conclusion, but that is to be expected.

The artwork, as always, is top notch. Steve McNiven (one of the best artists to come along in quite some time) did a fantastic job on the first two chapters, and Tom Raney's work on the last two chapters was excellent as well. It made me nostalgic for the classic Ellis/Raney Stormwatch run (which deserves the Absolute hardcover treatment, in case anyone from DC is reading this).

All told, Ultimate Secret is a worthy addition to the Ultimate Galactus saga and the Ultimate Universe as a whole.

When Wally West learns The Secret of Barry Allen, it turns out to be more than he wanted. After all, the main thing on his mind is why his wife, Linda, has left, apparently a repercussion of the Spectre's attempt to reestablish Wally's secret identity by wiping it from everyone's minds. That also causes problems with the Justice League, who are now wondering why they no longer know who their teammate is. And that's not even mentioning the rogues' gallery of villains plotting to bring the Flash down. The three-part title story involves a crossover with the famous Identity Crisis story line, and the moral/ethical dilemma surrounding what the League did to Doctor Light proves to be only part of the story. 1 out of 5 stars Over Hyped.......2006-01-24

The secret of Barry Allen is nothing but disappointing.
For those of us who witnessed the birth of the Silver Age Flash we thought there would be some earth-shaking revelation to reveal the hero's feet of clay. Sad to say his secret is no more disturbing than the announcement that he didn't floss after every meal.
Batman refers to Superman as a 'boy scout' but the real boy scout, the hero who didn't curse or spit, was Barry Allen's Flash.
The artwork was nice, but the plot was non-existant and unresolved. This added nothing to the mythos and was a waste of paper and ink. Shame on you DC

3 out of 5 stars Complements Identity crisis. Weak Flash story.........2006-01-13

This book probably reads better in continuity with the Identity crisis than stand alone. If you've read Identity crisis, the 'surprise' ending is already lost and makes this book not that much fun to read anymore. Does not carry the weight of the JSA books.

5 out of 5 stars Just to counter-balance the idiocy of "John Q. Public".......2005-10-15

It's sad that some readers can't accept the idea of heroes not always doing the right thing. I personally find that it makes the more human. I applaud DC for trying to shake up their status-quo, while Marvel plays catch-up.

4 out of 5 stars STRONG COMPLEMENT TO IDENTITY CRISIS.......2005-09-14

The Secret of Barry Allen is a trade paperback collecting issues #207 - 211 & 213 - 217 in this 240 page volume, coinciding with the Identity Crisis storyline which will be arriving in a hardcover collection very soon. Wally West has been granted a boon by the Spectre to have knowledge of his true identity totally erased from the world...and not only from the average man on the street, but EVERYONE, including the JLA. This was as a result of the events of Identity Crisis where someone (can't give that away) was targeting and murdering the family members of several superheroes including Sue Dibney, the wife of The Elongated Man.

As the story opens, Wally's wife Linda has left him to have some time for herself to think about the recent events as the wife of a hero. Meanwhile the Flash has no time to rest as a parade in his honor is interrupted by several members of his rogue's gallery. Now one thing I always loved about the Flash was his colorful and somewhat eccentric lineup of villains. Only Batman can boast a more bizarre group of villains. Plunder, Trickster II, Tarpit, and Abra Kadabra bust up the parade festivities and have Wally helpless until help arrive in the form of Kid Flash and Jay Garrick, the Golden Age Flash.

Wally eventually goes before the JLA to find out just what happened to their memories of Barry Allen, and who is wearing the mask of the Flash now. Wally walks out on the league, leading to one of those great Superman/Flash races in shades of the Silver Age as Superman demands to know the truth and what the Flash is running from. Secrets are revealed on many levels as Wally soon learns (again apparently) what the JLA began doing to villains such as Dr. Light, essentially using Zatanna's magic to lobotomize them. They took it one step further with The Top, altering his mind to try and turn him good. It works for awhile but soon drives the Top insane. This leads to a climactic battle between The Top, Flash, and Zatanna.

Wally once again must come to grips with what the league did. If you read Identity Crisis you know that Wally was the most outspoken about what some of the JLAers did and how it was kept a secret from other members, specifically Superman and Batman. Geoff Johns delivers a multi-layered plot that works with and expands on the story from Identity Crisis. On top of all this, Flash's Rogues Gallery is dealing with the death of Captain Boomerang and the revelation that he had a son who has now taken up his father's mantle. Add to this that some former members of the Rogues (Pied Piper, Trickster I, and Heatwave) are now working for the FBI and going after their former associates and another subplot involving Zoom and there is a lot packed into this one story. If there is a weakness it's perhaps that Johns is guilty of throwing too much at readers and there are loose ends left unresolved at the books conclusion. That said, it's a strong story and shows how Wally has truly matured (It has been some 20 years since he took over as The Flash). The art of Howard Porter and Livesay is first-rate without trying to be over-powering to the story. A cover gallery featuring the brilliant work of Michael Turner is included.

5 out of 5 stars Next building block in the continuing saga of the Flash.......2005-09-12

In contradiction to the other reviewers of this book, I really enjoyed the book. The last couple of year's writer Geoff Johns is creating an epic Flash saga. This volume continues to pick up steam and I really looking forward to the pay-off of this saga in the next volume. As a stand-alone volume, the book offers a very entertaining and dramatic story. The tie-in with Identity Crisis is handled well and doesn't hinder the reading experience. This volume is not the ideal book to pick up by newbies. I suggest to take the earlier volumes like Blood will run, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Great Conclusion.......2007-02-03

I first read this book and the two before it as a teenager about a decade ago and still enjoy re-reading them. Through the story the characters change and grow lending an air of conviction and meaning to their actions and their fight. The true "villian" is not Faye, but the same dark force fought by the young coven's parents, with devestating results, the generation before. Cassie, Diana, and Faye come together to fight in the end.

5 out of 5 stars A fitting conclusion.......2006-04-11

The first time around, I read this trilogy out of order. I picked this book up in a used bookstore when I was about ten, and I loved it so much that I went out and bought the two other books in the trilogy, and every other one that L.J. Smith had written at that point. Eight years later and it's still probably my favorite book by her.

The development of Cassie throughout all three books is fantastic, and so gradual that you almost don't see it until the second or third book, when you suddenly go, "Cassie, my girl! When did you grow a spine?" In the first book she's a mouse, and by the third one she's a heroine in every sense of the word, without being so larger-than-life and perfect that you can't identify her. The development of the other characters is equally fabulous.

As I mentioned in my review for the second book, I absolutely adore the fact that this author can have half a dozen seemingly disparate plots running, then tie them together in a way which is both elegant and believable. In this book, all of the loose ends are tied up: the Master Tools are found, Black John makes his appearance, the murders are solved, and the coven is faced the choice of standing together or falling apart. The final confrontation with the villain is more mystical than violent, and a fitting conclusion to this marvelous series.

The entire trilogy is excellent, but this is without a doubt the best book of the three.

5 out of 5 stars Good Twist.......2005-07-12

I liked the twist in this book. I really wasn't expecting some of the things that happened, though they may have been right under my nose. I won't say more because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, but you're going to be surprised.

This book, more than the first two, is very complex. Smith really does an excellent job of playing on many of the central themes of most pagan philosophy. The story is woven around the ideas of balance and sort of yin-yang philosophy. Plus, she obviously did her research on stones and herbs (as with the previous novels). The only complaint I really have is that there isn't a fourth book.

4 out of 5 stars The End.......2004-12-25

In this conclusion ea. of the characters must really make a choice as to who they want to be. Despite all the characters being sworn into a coven they have never been united. There has always been Faye's gang of wild and reckless witches that like to use their powers to have fun and then Diana's gang of goody-goody brainiacs. Then there's Nick - who's remained quietly reserved about his feelings the whole time.
Now that there is a common evil outside of their group (John Black)they have made a pact to work together to destroy him, with the exception of Faye who is drawn to the power he possesses. Now the time has come. The final battle.
Together the coven must select a permanent leader and figure out a way of stopping John Black and protecting the town of New Salem.
I enjoyed every minute of this book. It was fully of mystery, romance, betrayal, strategic battles, poems, etc. But it really shows what we all experience and must battle (figuratively) while growing up and leaving HS.
I do however have one complaint and what really takes the review down from 5 to 4 stars is Cassie's choice in a mate. The 2nd book hinted at a likeness Nick had for Cassie but he really starts to open himself slowly up to Cassie and it is so sweet because you know how hard it is for Nick to lay openly exposed like that. But Cassie forever stays convicted to this love she has for Adam. I'm totally an advocate for love at first sight, but Adam is just too polite and nice w/o any layers at all. In her third "Dark Visions" book, "The Passion", she has a similar quartet of lovers. Kait and Cassie (the main characters) are very similarly attracted to the nice boy (Rob/Adam) but where "The Passions" ends w/ Kait discovering a true connection of equalness to the "bad boy" Gabriel this book ends w/ Cassie never really feeling any attraction to Nick - only using him as a security blanket while she battled her lust for Adam.
Nick and Cassie have so much in common - personality wise - and I think she could really make him happier and together they'd work so well. Whereas I just see quietness between Adam and Cassie - I think they'll end up just empty.
Despite my dissatisfaction w/ the person Cassie chooses (sorry for giving that away) I strongly reccommend you to read each of the books of this trilogy. They are just incredibly real!!

5 out of 5 stars icefury19.......2004-10-26

This was a really terrific book and so is the author. Cassie loyalty to Diana is threaten by Faye when Faye find out some dirt on Cassie. Faye leads Cassie further into the path she walks. After doing her bidding, she releases John Black, the one who doing all the killing and who is Cassie father. He also turn the people against the witches. It ends up being Cassie who must stopped John Black. The ending is cool because Cassie ends up being a leader of the coven with Faye and Diana. The ending was awesome.

4 out of 5 stars The Secret: Each Book Gets Better.......2006-01-08

I originally picked up this trilogy because it looked interesting and the other reviewers raved about it. Chapters into the first book, I began to wonder why it was so beloved. More questions than answers swam across the page, drowning me in confusion and frustration. I felt thrown into a sea without a life preserver. The language was too archaic at times, and I constantly felt I was not being given enough information to process the storyline.

I felt like I was plowing through the book with an old, tired horse in a massive field full of rocks while the burning sun beat down from above. Being a complete-ist, however, I trudged on and picked up book #2. Halfway through, I pleasantly discovered that my horse was more spry, the rocks had disappeared from the field, and I was wearing a broad-rimmed hat. I was still plowing, but it wasn't nearly as painful. By book #3, I had a tractor, cool breeze, and lemonade in my hand. The work was no longer a chore but a welcome vacation I found thoroughly enjoyable.

I can hardly account for the transition, but it did happen. I recommend the trilogy to those who are not afraid to persevere in the beginning to achieve a great reward in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Hidden away.......2004-05-17

Pamela Dean's Secret Country Trilogy has only recently come back into the spotlight, when reprinted by Firebird Books. Now the second volume of this quirky epic is out: "The Hidden Land." It suffers from a bit of middle-volume syndrome, but it keeps up the pace and builds up suspense and plot for volume three.

In the first book of the trilogy, five cousins suddenly got swept away into the Secret Country -- a magical land of wizards, dragons, unicorns, nobles and kings, which they thought they had made up as a game. Now they have taken the parts they set down for themselves, ranging from sorceresses to crown princes -- and a person they never made up has shown up: the mysterious Claudia.

Now things take a not-so-unexpected turn, when the kids try to keep the King from being murdered. But the king dies anyhow -- and the question of whodunnit only makes things more complicated. Since he is the crown prince, Ted has to ascend the throne, but since he isn't really Prince Edward, he's uneasy about it. But despite his lack of experience, he must find a way to ready the Hidden Land for war against the Dragon King... even if he dies in the process.

Dean jumps headlong back into the story without missing a step. "The Hidden Land," like its predecessor, takes a lot of basic fantasy elements and whips them together into something fresh. Kids in a fantasy land, wizards, unicorns, evil dark lord, and plenty of other stuff. Don't worry -- Dean's sense of whimsy and mystery carries it through.

Her descriptions are detailed but avoid being grandiose. Dean takes the story seriously but doesn't make it pretentious. She also mixes together "ye olde" speak and modern English, keeping the medieval people from sounding like modern Americans, and Americans from sounding like ye olde medieval types. You can't forget that these scared, confused kids are not native to the Secret Country.

Ted is perhaps the character who grows the most in this book, since he's struggling to keep afloat as the new King. But all the cousins have become more confident and able. (In a few cases, they act oddly because of their adventures). Some are stronger, some are wiser, and some are just handling the situation well. But they are still portrayed as kids stuck in a fantasy game gone wild.

"The Hidden Land" suffers from the awkwardness of being in the middle of the trilogy. But it remains a budding classic, with its whimsically serious story and likable characters. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! This from a 26-year old, hehehe.......2004-03-29

I was going up and down the isle of my favorite book store when I stumbled on the interesting cover of this book. I picked it up going, wow, what is this about? I read the back cover. My heart raced suddenly. Could it be true? A book with such an interesting story idea like this? I didn't even read the first book but by instinct picked up ALL THREE books in the trilogy at once. Boy, was that a smart thing to do.

4 out of 5 stars Good news!.......2002-02-06

Just passing on good news I've heard -- the series is to be reprinted starting in 2003! If you couldn't find The Whim of the Dragon, the third book, just wait -- relief is in sight!
Aside from that, it's a worthy follow-up to The Secret Country, but very much dependent on it -- don't try to read this alone. Good reading to you!

5 out of 5 stars Six stars!.......1999-07-22

Nobody, nobody, nobody writes like Pamela Dean. Some writers have written as well, but no writer of prose has ever had a voice that somehow manages to feel like Tom O'Bedlam's song.

_The Hidden Land_ continues the story begun in _The Secret Country_ and finishing in _The Whim of the Dragon._ The protagonists are a group of kids of various ages, and the story is entirely suitable for either children or adults. I can't recommend it too highly; the writing sings. It's replete with literary allusions interwoven in a fashion entirely suitable to the setting and the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret Country.......2007-03-27

This book and its sequels are three of my very favorites. By chance I found them in the book store. I was just browsing, and the cover page caught my eye. Grabbing it, I read the back and was immediatly intrigued. It was a book about something that made me think. I bought it and its sequels, and immediatly fell in love with them. Pamela Dean's expressive and realistic characters are so inviting that you can't put it down. The dialoge is amazing, and the plot intricate with its many slip-ups and twists.

For years five very different cousins Ruth, Ted, Patrick, Ellen, and Laura have played a game they call the Secret. It is filled to the brim with mystery, drama, court intrigue, mystical beasts, enemy kingdoms, and most of all, magic. The Secret has characters that the cousins have based off of themselves, or who they wish to be. Lady Ruth, Prince Edward, Prince Patrick, Princess Ellen, and Princess Laura, are the royal children. There are many other quirky characters that fill the game and keep it interesting. Then, by chance or by fate, the five find themselves in their Secret Country, playing their pretend roles as the many twists and turns of their plot unfold. The cousins soon realize that they must stop everything they acted out at home, and that they have to find a way back to their real lives.

The Secret Country is a book that describes every book-lover and play-maker's dream: what if the imaginary worlds we dream about become real? It is a book every lover of fantasy should read.

4 out of 5 stars the secret country.......2007-01-22

Ted and Laurie found a sword that took them into the wondrous world that they and their cousins Ruth, Patrick, and Ellen created. Many different events have been happening and few have turned out the way they were supposed. It seemed that their fantasy world was taking control now and they were just visiting. It was time to play their roles and find out what was happening. If you are interested to find out what happens next, read The Secret Country by Pamela Dean. I would highly recommend this book to all teen readers.

The first reason I would recommend this book is because of its plot. For example, the "secret country" took years to prepare and to make choices. Another instance is when Ted has a dream of a fencing match with Lord Randolph and uses the dream as a base for his fencing techniques. The last instance is when they use Sham's Ring to pause time in their own world so they stay out of trouble.

Another reason I would recommend this book is for its indifference from other fantasy books. Such as, the Unicorns are the most powerful beings. Another example is that five kids are to change the country's destiny and to save it from the Dragon King. A third example is that there are swords that allow them to travel at will between the worlds and are able to cast light. One last example is that their game is turning real and that they have no control.

The final reason I would recommend this book is because of its creativity. Like, the children must not get caught in their other world clothes. The characters each have their own abilities and weaknesses. Ruth is a witch, Ted is a practiced swordsman and Laura is a princess and there are more abilities for each character. And that the secret country is on Pennsylvania's time meaning that it's hard to sneak out and not get in trouble for all of the kids.

I would recommend this book to all readers that prefer fantasy books. This book starts out slow, but eventually the plot speeds up and it becomes more interesting. The plot will keep you wanting more as you get further into it, although it will still have slow parts. There is some action throughout the book, but the amount increases as you near the end of the book. If you liked this book be sure to grab a copy of the next two books in the series.

3 out of 5 stars The Secret: Each Book Gets Better.......2006-01-08

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for the trilogy.......2005-07-27

I picked this book up at the store several times, and always set it down again. Finally I found an old edition at a used book store, and took the plunge. Boy, am I glad the trilogy was reprinted! The Secret Country ends rather abruptly, leaving very little resolved except the reader's intention to find book number two. Which I did. And read in one sitting the same night. I did not understand all of it, and certainly did not catch all the literary references, but when I reached the end of the trilogy, I wanted nothing so much as to pick up the first and start it again, merely for the pleasure of keeping company with the likes of Ted, Ruth, Laura, and the various denizens of the Hidden Land. And much the same way as I check every wardrobe I see for a passageway to Narnia, I will now keep a sharp eye for strange houses surrounded by hedges. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I hear my book calling...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - Read the Others!.......2004-07-29

The Secret Country is the first title in the Secret Country trilogy, which takes the usual kids-from-our-world-are-transported-to-a-magical-realm story structure and turns it on its head. Not only do these kids know this world - they've made up stories about it and acted them out for many years - but they find they're forced to take the places of the princes, princesses, and sorcerers everyone in the Secret Country thinks they are, even though they can't fight with swords or use magic. In addition, the five children are finding that not everything they made up in their games turns out to be true...

The Secret Country is now one of my favorite books, and I've re-read it several times - I can't believe it ever went out of print! The world and plot are quite unlike anything else I've read, and the five children were all very vivid and distinct people - I never mixed them up, one of the problems I've found in other stories. Other characters were also well written, and I enjoyed the mix of the somewhat Shakespearean speech of the inhabitants of the Secret Country with the modern talk of the children. The unicorns were also very interesting, with their wry sense of humor and ambivalent attitude towards humans.

If you the choice to read The Secret Country, it might be a good idea to note that this is one of those trilogies in which the three volumes are really just one long story, with cliffhanger endings. I wish someone had told me that when I first read this book - I immediately had to go back to the bookstore to purchase the next two books - they're titled The Hidden Land and The Whim of the Dragon, in case you didn't know.

I bought this book in a second hand book it is a briellient story and enjoyed reading it very much.

5 out of 5 stars I adore these books.......2006-07-01

I first read these in high school and now atleast every 2 or 3 years I read them again. This time around (I'm 27 now) when I had the urge to read them I couldn't find them. I really wish they would make them into a movie trilogy! It's just a great read if you love nature and magic and remember being 16 and in highschool. I hope I read this until I am an old grandma and can get lost in time and pretend I am cassie!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful young adult book.......2006-04-11

I love this trilogy. I've loved it since I was about ten, and I still love it. It has pride of place on my bookshelf, and every now and again, I go back and re-read it.

In this first book, Cassie Blake, a highschool junior, finds herself suddenly uprooted when her mother moves them back to the tiny Massachusetts town of New Salem. They move in with her grandmother, and before long, a girl at Cassie's school has been murdered and Cassie has taken her place in the mysterious 'Club', a group of teenage witches who can trace their lineage all the way back to the days of the Salem witchcraft trials. Add to that is the menacing and beautiful Faye, Cassie's growing attraction to her best friend's boyfriend, and the search for the coven's lost Master Tools, and you have yourself a gripping and fast-paced start to a thrilling young adult trilogy.

That's not to say that the story doesn't have its problems, one of which is the somewhat underdeveloped secondary characters. Even this is excusable, however, given that there are eleven of them in the coven itself, not to mention various relations and townspeople. If nothing else, most of the coven members are clearly defined and given at least a few pages of close attention, such as the bike ride with Deborah in the second novel. Overall, a very satisfactory read, and well worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars I loved these books.......2006-02-14

When I was about 13 or 14 I read and re-read these book over and over again. I even recorded them on tape so that I could listen to it while I was out and about.

I loved this trilogy.

Everyone can relate to Cassie in feeling different in a group and in this day and age magic is really popular, so this trilogy is the best for those that are coming of age in this time period when we are obsessed with darkness and magic, etc.

I plan on buying a new set because I wore my old set (given that was 13 years ago) out.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2005-07-12

I first read this book when I was 12. For some reason I was not able to get ahold of the next two books in the series. Well, the ending left me so curious to know what happened that I felt compelled (at the age of 24) to track down the next two books in the series to find out what happened. I have to say that I enjoyed reading it the second time as much as I enjoyed the first. The characters are all well formed and interesting. These books are an excellent synthesis of religious accuracy and compelling imagination.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Captain America: Secret Empire.......2007-01-25

This graphic novel collects some old issues of the Captain America comic from the Seventies--#'s 169-176--and features the adventures Cap has before giving up his role as the Star-Spangled Avenger. This means that Secret Empire is a story of a hero's growing disillusionment with his own country. I'm disappointed with how little we get to see inside Steve Roger's (aka Captain America's) psyche as the Watergate scandal breaks while Cap is simultaneously framed for murder and rejected by the citizens he has always protected thanks to a widespread conspiracy unfolding against him, but other than that, this is an entertaining story, which guest-stars CA's regular partner of the time, The Falcon, at his best.

The Secret Empire is a bunch of guys in hooded cloaks, but they have awesome weapons, a flying saucer powered by the mutant minds of various captured X-Men (and some of their foes), and agents placed in all the strata of American society, ready to assist, when called on, in the secret domination of their country. Quentin Harderman is one of those agents, and as the head of the Committee To Regain America's Principles--really just a propaganda tool of the Empire--his mission is to discredit Captain America by launching an insidious smear campaign with TV ads, and seal the deal by framing Cappy for murder with some help from a super-powered villain named Moonstone whom the public will be manipulated into seeing as great hero and replacement for Cap. Though the obligatory fight scenes pull focus away from the subtler aspects of what's truly cool here--do Cap and The Falcon really need to fight the Banshee in Nashville while pursuing a lead?--the intervention of realworld politics, like Moonstone on a talk-show glibly lumping the "Captain America scandal" in with Watergate, gives the Secret Empire saga clout.

The truth is, Spider-Man spent much of his career wanted for murder while being targeted by a powerful media mogul (you know who) in a relentless smear campaign--so what's so special here? And Iron Man was very similarly framed for murder by a villain trying to destroy all his credibility. Batman (well, okay, Bruce Wayne) has been a fugitive due to a frame-up. And most major heroes in comics have, at one time or another, given up their crime-fighter identities, often when the public doesn't want them around anymore. So why is it a bigger deal when THIS hero quits? Well, simply put, because he wears the Stars and Stripes, and functions as a symbol of his country, and even of his government. When Captain America decides to stop being Captain America not long after chasing Agent Number One of the Secret Empire into The White House and unmasking unthinkable corruption while inside its walls, it is a comic book with something to say about how powerful corruptors can make dupes of all of us. Very cool metaphor for the shocking truths being revealed in American politics at the time...even if this fictional counterpart features a flying saucer full of X-Men on the White House lawn.

I was originally going to give Secret Empire only a 3-Star review because of some clunky plotting (what happened to Mastermind, Unus, the Blob, and Mesmero; did they just wander off somewhere, after we saw them?). And Nick Fury could have just been edited out, since it's a few of his other SHIELD agents who figure cleverly into the story. But--The Falcon comes into his own, gloriously; I guess a bell rings because he earns his wings! And Moonstone is a memorable cad, even when he too discovers he's just another expendable pawn in the plans of the Secret Empire. So it's a gutsy storyline from the House Of Ideas in the Seventies.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Cap.......2006-06-29

There's never been a more interesting or important Capt. America story arc than this 1970's classic by the great Steve Englehart. During the height of the national disillusionment that culminated with the Watergate scandal (current events actually shaped the development of the story as it unfolded), Steve Rogers questions what it means to be Captain America, and gives up the role for a number of issues (a daring move at the time). Often imitated, but never equalled. I still keep an eye out for anything that Englehart writes (most recently, the Dark Detective mini-series at DC).

The end of this book was terrible. The end of a series should be catacalismic for someone, but in this book everyone, even the bad guys, get what they want. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Review-wise, I can't really add much to those who have spoken before me (see below), but I can pass on that the series is to be reprinted starting in 2003! Great for those of us who were having problems finding all three books!

5 out of 5 stars This book should not be out of print!.......2000-01-09

The Whim of the Dragon is the final book in an incredible series, and it lives up to the first two splendidly.

In this book the children are forced to grow up, to realize that their game really has affected other people's lives. They have to take responsibility for their Secret. Dean pulls no punches. The book is bittersweet; it made me cry and laugh together, not sure which emotion was in control.

Definitely one of the best things I've read. I would recommend it to everyone, but since it's unavailable that's not very useful. It's now almost impossible to find, a fact which I find frustrating to the point of tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars Six stars!.......1999-07-22

_The Whim of the Dragon_ is the last book in the trilogy that begins with _The Secret Country_ and _The Hidden Land._ I cannot praise Pamela Dean's unique writing style highly enough. It sings. Magic and poetry are interwoven in a setting in which the mage's talent is essentially poetic; literary allusions, most commonly to Shakespeare, are everywhere. A superlative read for children and adults alike.

4 out of 5 stars Great Companion Book to the Secret War Series.......2006-01-24

When I first read this, I was pretty lost because I hadn't been following Marvel's "Secret War" mini-series. Now that the eternally delayed final issue of "Secret War" has finally been released, I got the rest of the issues and caught up. This book shows "SW" from Jessica Jones point of view. She's an investigative reporter, former super-hero, and Luke Cage's baby-mama. She's frustrated and angry that she can't figure out what's happening. Well we can't either!

Until now, of course. Check out the comic issues of Secret War (or wait for the graphic novel version) BEFORE reading this. I have no idea why they released this companion book so far ahead of the main story.

The best part about this book is the dark and moody artwork of Anderson and Lark. It's a huge improvement over Bagley's cartoon-y style in Vol. 1. His stuff works well in lighter books like "Ultimate Spider-man," but I'm glad someone at Marvel realized it doesn't work in this title. Jessica finally gets the hard edge that she deserves in Vol. 2. Die-hard fans from her "Alias" days will be pleased.

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the first Pulse TPB!!.......2005-10-22

I concur with the previous reviewer, Michael Schwarz. I picked up this book because I had read the original "Pulse" trade paperback and enjoyed it. But this book, as a stand alone collection, is not nearly as enjoyable. It's clearly a follow up to two other collected Marvel stories: "The Secret War" and "Alias" -more so than the original "Pulse" TPB. I am a fan of Brent Anderson, and his art here is it's usual excellent quality!

I have not yet read "The Secret War" or "Alias" collections, but now I'm going to check them out. Before you read this title, you may wish to consider doing the same. But even then, this collection seems like little more than just a follow up to a previous story. Skipping it probably won't make much of a difference.

3 out of 5 stars Additional Reading May Be Required.......2005-08-26

OK, First thing's first, this is a tie in. It's a tie in to the Marvel's new Secret Wars story arc, and that's it's biggest problem.

Bendis seems to get a lot of things right regarding Jessica in this that may have let down readers of Alias from the previous Pulse book, but, the trade off is that this story has the feel of those old star trek episodes that excluded the main characters with the intention of presenting a different perspective on the universe. You get the feeling things are going on without any idea what they relate to, but, by the end, the book never does clear this up.

As an Alias mini-series tie in to Secret Wars, this might have been an acceptable book, but as it stands, it's a mess. That being said if you're a fan of Alias, you've probably already picked this up, but if you're only experiance with Jessica Jones is the previous Pulse TPB and you haven't read the new Secret Wars series, then this is probably not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-03-25

So, I've never read a romance novel before or anything erotic. But I was in the mood to read one one day and so I picked it out from the bookstore, and the back of the book looked interesting enough. I couldn't put it down when I got home. I love this book! The short stories are awesome. The writers do an excellent job of storytelling. I would recommend this to anyone who was into romance or just wanted a good erotic read. Now I'm going to go back and read the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise.......2006-01-09

I've been reading less frequently because I can't always make the time, and I discovered this anthology by accident. I began it with very low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised by both the quality of the writing and the level of character development in all the stories. I could read them at my leisure and they were very sexy. All the stories were erotic without being trashy and the relationships were well justified and developed. I'm now in search of all the other volumes. It was wonderful to have such variety in one small book.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets scores again.......2004-04-23

There is only one problem with the Red Sage anthologies, "Secrets"...they put them out so rarely!! Do wish they would speed up their pace!

This one again has a sizzling story from Angela Knight. I would buy "Secrets" just for her alone. But she is joined with a super tales by Jule Lawless, Julia Wells and Kathryn Anne Dubois.

Angela Knight, again ventures into the vampire sagas, with the great tale of Sean Logan MacLean. He is a navy seal who is tracking down the vampire who murdered his wife. Virginia Hart is a sexy vampire who finds herself in the cross-hairs of Sean's crossbow! He knows she is connected to his wife's death, so is determined to kill her. It's up to Virginia to convince him all vampires are not alike. Together, they find they have a common purpose - to kill the same vampire responsible for destroying their loves - and love gives them to extra power of the Avengers. Super writing!

Jude Lawless gives us a very intriguing tale of Gay Avonaco. He has just moved in next door to Joanna Morgan. With his coming, Joanna begins to have very provocative dreams. She thinks it's just lust for her sexy neighbour; it's up to him to convince her she is the woman of his dreams, too.

Julia Wells gives us a tale of Captain Quentin Hawke...he won the right to take Amelia's innocence. Amelia had no idea her father bet her innocence in a card game - and lost! Honour demands she fulfill her fathers bet, but she wants a compromise. Three days of games...is it a bet that Hawke can walk away from?

Kathryn Anne Dubois delivers us "Surrender". Free-spirit Johanna want no part of rules society presses upon women, especially as she faces marriage to the powerful Duke of Chandlemare. Only the Duke does not want to typical wife, so he is going to teach Johanna a thing or two about a good wife being so bad!

4 out of 5 stars Most rwere okay but Jade lawless's story was great!.......2003-03-31

I have been reading romance novels off and on for the past 15 years but this was the first time I read sensual fiction. Altough I gave the book 4 stars not all the stories were that good so here is my opinion of each story:

AMELIA'S INNOCENCE: (3 stars) Overall the story was interesting and the sex scences very steamy. The only thing I didn't like was how submissive Amelia was but considering her circumstances it was understandable. I perfer strong female heroines.

SURRENDER: (1 stars) This was a classic 80's bodice ripper if I ever read one. I didn't like the hero and felt sorry for the heroine who was forced to marry him. I know that these are short stories but this one needed more development. There was no reason for them to fall in love other than good sex. The worst past of the story was when Johanna lay sick and unconscious and Nicholas while cooling her off became "aroused" and touched her breast. Give me a break! He didn't know what was wrong with her. She could have been dying and all he could think about was sex. Ugh!!!

KISSING THE HUNTER: (2 star) I read the rave reviews about Ms. Knights writing skills and this is one of the reason I chose vol. 7. Well now I know the saying to each his own is true. I didn't like the whole vamp needing sex to survive plot. I didn't like Victoria either. One minute she is picking up strange me for sex/survival and the next she is blushing like a virgin because Logan basically call her a slut. Victoria and Logan had strong sexual attraction but I didn't like their sex scenes.

So way did I give this book four stars? The one saving grace was Jade Lawless' WOMAN OF HIS DREAMS which I give a (5 star) rating. This story was fantastic. I liked Joanna and Gray. Gray was sexy, strong, and giving, everything a hero should be. The passion and love between Joanna and Gray was hot and sensual. Jade Lawless told a story of love that transended time and I loved it! I wish that this story was full length novel because it ended too soon. I can't wait to read more from Jade lawless.
