Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Big as a phone book, about as useful for RVers. CD is a plus........2007-05-29

I was surprised to find how many places in Wisconsin that I've camped at are not listed in this book. It is huge but still far from exhaustive. The emphasis by far is on commercial RV parks over national, state, and regional campgrounds. My view of Trailer Life's RV-camping guide is similar. Between the two of them, they cover enough RV-friendly places in Wisconsin to be useful, but even combined are woefully far from complete. The CD is handy if you bring a laptop with you, can't seem to find a "turn here for camping" sign, and don't want to spend another night at Wally World.

5 out of 5 stars Woodall Campgroud Directory w/CD.......2007-05-13

Excellent book, very informative. The CD makes it a whole lot easier looking things up while traveling.

5 out of 5 stars Great Campground Guide.......2007-05-13

Great value for the money. Includes a handy CD. This is very useful if you have a laptop.

3 out of 5 stars Oh, man, this thing is BIG!.......2007-05-12

Thankfully a CD is supplied because the book is as big as a New York City phone book! I'd be hard pressed to lug it around the country with me.

It's heavy with ad space, too. The campgroud descriptions are brief but given the volume, I guess that is by necessity.

4 out of 5 stars Super Nice Directory with Handy CD...........2007-03-12

We replaced an older 1997 version with this new Woodall's directory as we plan an RV trip to Yellowstone and adjoing states this summer. Remembered how handy the older one was during our other excursions and obviously wanted the newer/updated version.

Have found the included CD to be a compliment to this directory. Loaded it into our PC and work strictly off of the CD to plan our summer excursion. If RV campsites have websites, you can just click on the link and they come up. Pretty nifty and much easier than looking them up in the directory... much faster. If you have a laptop, I can see how nice and handy it would be on the road.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I can't find any information on "reservations accepted or not" at any of the various RV campsites we are looking at. This would be a real plus and great addition to the directory, otherwise you will need to call each one individually.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Camping with the Corp of Engineers.......2007-05-14

It was in good shape when it arrived and it looks like it will be very helpful as we tour America this coming camping season.

4 out of 5 stars Camping with the Army Corps of Engineers.......2006-08-01

A unique feature of this small book is its tight list of Army Corps of Engineer Campsites that are not found in many other directories or guidebooks. This guide will tell you if the campsite is located near a big city like Atlanta or in a rural area. Organized by state, maps of your destination area are a helpful adjunct. As the name implies, most facilities are located near a body of water. Some tend to be more family oriented, others are described as hideaways--peaceful locations where you can commune with nature. The book provides good directions from major highways and clear information about the campsites. (Most list amenities, such as electric, water and dump stations.) This is a useful tool to have with you on any trip. Coming upon one of these sites can be a wonderful diversion. D. Brandley

4 out of 5 stars Camping resourse.......2006-02-24

As a retired Corps of Engineer officer and a new RVer, I found this book interesting and helpful in planning for trips.

We have not camped at one of the Corps sites yet, but have visited a couple recently and found the book to accurately describe the ones we have visited.

4 out of 5 stars Great for RVers.......2005-11-21

This book is a "must have" for RVers and campers. I can't think of any other source that has all this information in one place, and easy to find.

4 out of 5 stars Great data ..........2005-08-02

Here's a book that would have made a great spreadsheet. There's a lot of data here, displayed via a string of pictographs. Text in this book serves to provide directions only.

I would have rated this higher if it provided a little background on the location, the history, geographic features, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Woodall's North American Campground Directory, 2007 .......2007-08-26

As always, Woodall's reviews are accurate and helpful. At the beginning of each state is a map showing where the different campgrounds are located. As we like to camp "on the fly" this is very helpful. We'll look up and read the descriptions in the area we want, make a phone call and we're off! We haven't been disappointed by a Woodall's review yet.

4 out of 5 stars Woodall's Campground Directory.......2007-08-23

Woodall's is an excellent guide to campgrounds, and it is rather comprehensive. However, I found the print size rather small and hard for me to read. The print size is the reason for a 4 rating rather than a 5.

2 out of 5 stars Should be re-named RV campground directory.......2007-04-11

This is probably a great book for those with RV's. For tent campers it definitely lacks (unless you want to camp next to a RV and listen to a generator running all day). I'm not sure how they selected the campgrounds, but they sure left a bunch of them out, especially state or federally run campgrounds. As an example, I was looking for information on 2 campgrounds in Wells Nevada (Angel Lake and Angel Creek), but the book had neither of them. Though it did have an Angel Lake RV park, which is not the same as the campground. So, for tent campers, I'd recommend finding a different book. For RV campers, go for it! In all fairness, most the RV sites seem to allow tent camping.

5 out of 5 stars Woodall's North American Campground Directory, 2007.......2007-03-28

Great resource! It is a large book but that's due to its comprehensive coverage. A must have for any camper.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Good Repair Manual For Vehicle Owners.......2003-07-18

Save your money on Chilton. They do not hold near the information, clarity and in depth detail, thus VALUE, that Haynes Repair Manuals do. Having said that, I would like to address some complaints I've come across about both Haynes
and Chilton's Manuals.
1.) If your manual suggests at a point to seek professional input it is because MOST NON mechanics don't possess the skill or tools or shop equipment to perform a certain procedure (be it correctly or safely). The publishers' lawyer insisted on the "seek professional input" so as not to take on legal liability for an unqualified person attempting to perform a critical step in their car care. The reason is valid. You can injure yourself and damage your vehicle as well as render your
vehicle unsafe to be on the road.
2.) Prior to purchasing a repair manual, LOOK THROUGH IT. Almost every auto parts store in America sells Haynes and / or Chilton's. If the particular manual you need doesn't have the plastic removed, look for a manual that does and look through the sections. CAUTION most auto supply stores will get mad and make you buy anything you rip open. They're trying to sell information contained in the manual, not give it away. Some copies are USUALLY open and can be looked
at. Does the manual seem logical, good pictures? Thorough? Then CHANCES ARE that brand will be a good choice for your repair. Also READ the cover front & back thoroughly. It will tell you if special vehicles aren't covered (AWD, Alternate Fuel Vehicles, etc) Know what vehicle you have so you get the RIGHT manual. The correct year, make, model, engine size.
3.) If you do encounter a problem in the middle of a repair, it's possible that it is YOUR not doing something correctly. Not the tool, or the repair manual. Go away from the car, get lunch or a cold glass of lemonade, read through the manual. Even start again in the morning.
4.) As automobiles become more sophisticated, there is truly less and less that a vehicle owner can do him or herself. It is a fact, you will need to take your vehicle into a dealership or well equipped shop for more things. In addition, used oil and other fluids are difficult to dispose of. DO NOT THROW DOWN YOUR DRAIN OR BURY IN YOUR BACKYARD!!!. Tires, batteries all have special disposal needs.
5.) There are some people WHO ARE NOT MECHANICAL. Buy them books, audio / video equipment, ties for Christmas. NOT A WRENCH SET!
6.) Neither Haynes nor Chilton are Professional Shop Manuals (these are available for hundreds of dollars).
As for the particular manual for the Haynes (ASIN: 1563923580) Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town & Country from years 1996 through 1999: This manual does NOT COVER All-Wheel Drive nor Alternative Fuel Models AND SAYS SO ON THE COVERS. Haynes breaks down into different sections each of the engine options (in this example: 4 cylinder,3.0 liter V6, 3.3 liter V6, and 3.8 V6) If you're say, changing an air filter, make sure you're looking at the right directions for the engine for the vehicle you have. The different engines have important items positioned in different locations and thus DIFFERENT INSTRUCTIONS for each item on each engine. You can even utilize Amazon "take a look inside" feature to check out if this manual is for you or not. .I checked it's description for changing wiper blades, oil and oil filters, air filters and general repairs and found it both accurate and easy to understand. I've been happy with Haynes manuals over the years and recommend all vehicle owners purchase one even if you don't expect to do any repair or service yourself. It helps to know the information, to be aware of how your car works and to talk in a reasonably intelligent manner (on your part anyway) when you take your vehicle in for service.

I'm happy with this purchase. And have been with every Haynes manual I've bought and used in the last 20 years.
John Row

1 out of 5 stars Very Inaccurate.......2003-03-14

You would not be even able to change your air filter if you used this book. I tried to follow the instructions for changing the air filter on my 99 Grand Caravan, but I was left with frustration. This is just one inaccuracy I found. I would'nt be surprised if there are more.

Maybe the book is good for another year not for the 1999 Grand Caravan model.

5 out of 5 stars the best I've seen so far.......2007-10-05

The reason I really like this is it gives very specific details on each campground. For example, it will even breakdown by the site number which ones have more trees, which are quieter, and, if there's a stream which sites are closest to the stream. It especially has a good introduction (Pg.1), stating that "life is short, and life is about choices...". It would be better, therefore, to stay at the best campground one can find, rather than simply making do with a run-of-the mill noisy, dumpy rv park. And this book only reviews the cream of the crop rv parks!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-09-21

I found this book to be chock full of info. It is a little intimidating being it covers all states but very helpful. The enclosed maps makes it easier to locate campgrounds. I find this book helpful, informative and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for campers and the like.......2006-12-29

Love the book and gave it as a Christmas gift - and he loves it. He is an RVer and I am a tent camper, so it is the best of both worlds. We haven't used it to be able to compare their ratings to our ratings, but just looking through it makes me ready to pack up and get out!! More information on places that I didn't even know existed surrounding me - and more!! Would make an excellent gift.

5 out of 5 stars Mexican Camping.......2007-10-06

I've been searching on the internet for information on RV (Trailer Parks in Mexico) Resorts in Mexico and it hasn't been very useful. This book however is exactly what I was searching for on the internet but MUCH, MUCH handyer.

5 out of 5 stars A dream becoming reality.......2007-09-01

Thanks to this book, we will be able to get on with our project, drive into Mexico with our Class A. We probably would have done it anyway, but this book makes things easier and with less hassle and waste of time.
We know, now, exactly what and where we will go on our 3 month trip.

2 out of 5 stars Mexican Camping?.......2007-06-08

There is not much useful in this book. Traveling widely in Mexico and checking out many of the suggested stops, few still exist. Just try calling them. One of the few that was still in operation had an overflowing septic tank and was intolerable.
Alas, dry camping with permission is the order of the day. Luckily Mexicans are nice about it. US style RV or tent camping sites are rare as hen's teeth. Since the right to bear arms does not exist in Mexico, security can be a real issue if you make a bad decision. Maybe the best advice, if you do not caravan, would be to drive a decrepit, ratty, small RV so as not to attract the wrong sort.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CAMPING GUIDE.......2006-02-05

I found the book a GREAT guide for camping with my RV.The publishers website has updates on the campgrounds.

5 out of 5 stars Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping.......2005-04-11

We found the Churchs book an essential aid in navigating around some of Mexico's cities and finding interesting campsites. Each page is filled with useful information, maps, directions and commentary on camping places that aid in trip planning.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best book, and there is an updated version available.......2006-07-17

Amazon is not so great about removing older versions of books and this is one example - if you are going to buy it, get the 2006 version. Now, about the 1999 version....I will agree that it is helpful for driving through the park, but it's only good if you are traveling in the direction she has written it in. For example, if you are traveling a particular leg from north to south but she has written the guide traveling south to north, it is really difficult to follow. The book Yellowstone Treasures by Janet Chapple is written with mile markers regardless of which direction you are traveling in, so I recommend it over this one. Chapple's book is also more comprehensive.

4 out of 5 stars Scenic Driving: Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.......2006-02-28

I love the detailed descriptions she writes mile by mile which will be very helpful to have in the car as I drive through the parks myself. It has also prepared me for what to look for.

As a "map lover" I like the detailed maps of different sections of the park even more. But . . . I have two complaints: 1) Her maps do not include everything she describes. To me, that is the purpose of a zoomed in map of one section of the park! 2) In her written description she talks way too much about the fire of 1988! But overall I have found the book helpful in my preparation for a visit to both parks and plan to carry it with me.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference and take along guide.......2005-10-06

I purchased many books as a reference for our first trip to Yellowstone, this is the one book I decided to take with us and we used it everyday, the information given was interesting and easy to follow. We felt like we had our own personal guide. Would recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2005-08-10

My kids and I just got back from Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and this book made our trip even better than it would have been without it. The funny thing is that I almost didn't buy this book. I refused to be one of those people who experience Yellowstone from my car, so a book called "Scenic Driving" didn't appeal to me at first. But Yellowstone is so huge that even if you plan to hike every day you still need to drive between trailheads, and as a result, you spend a lot of time in the car. My 13-year-old son narrated the entire drive and we ended up seeing things and doing things that we wouldn't have otherwise done. This book helped us understand what we were seeing and led us down roads I would have passed up if it weren't for this book telling us what was around that corner. (By the way, "A Ranger's Guide to Yellowstone Day Hikes" was a great book too!) I can't recommend this book enough. It's a must!

5 out of 5 stars Scenic Driving Yellowstone and Grand Teton national park.......2004-01-09

We used our copy of this book to plan our main drives around both parks. Except for a very few instances the scenes were exactly as described and exactly where they were supposed to be. The wildlife viewing recommendations for the most part were spot on. We recommend this a an invaluable resource for those planning to drive most of the roads and entrances to both parks. We lent our well beaten copy to other couples since our return and both couples raved about how useful this book was to their planning and daily events.

Book Description

You don't need a lot of money or a luxurious motor coach to camp in awesome surroundings while exploring America. Arlene and Charles Corby did it in a pop-up camper. Four days into retirement, they left with a full tank of gas and big dreams. Their schedule was to be in Savannah for St. Paddy's Day; New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival and San Antonio for Fiesta. Their trip lasted two years and covered 50,000 miles. From the heat of the Louisiana bayous to the cool breezes of the Pacific Ocean, adventure was at every turn. They found that traveling in a pop-up camper was economical, low maintenance, and a lot of fun. Share their journey and learn how to. *Adjust to life on the road *Make your camper a home *Live 24/7 with your mate and enjoy it! "This is a humorous, down-to-earth, book filled with useful information about camping life along the highways and by-ways of America. Even if you don't camp, you'll enjoy it." Frank Planes, Avid Camper and Photographer "Your enthusiasm comes through, both for travel and for life in general. Some descriptions have a lyrical brilliance that makes for enjoyable reading." Deanna Bennett, Leader, East Lake Writers Workshop

2 out of 5 stars . . . just badly written........2007-08-13

Perhaps one becomes spoiled by the likes of "Travels with Charley", "Blue Highways", even "Jupiter's Travels"; however, this book is virtually unreadable. I made myself finish it before depositing it in the garbage. Save your money. This is a book written in an amateurish manner that tells some superficial things about places visited and virtually nothing about the "popup" camper, etc.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Book!.......2006-07-14

This book seriously makes me want to hit the road and explore the "highways and byways" of America. It is funny, easy to read, well-researched and gave me new insight into places I have never even thought of visiting. Corby and her husband Charles obviously have a great zest for life and step up and talk to people who are strangers and leave them as friends. This book will also help people avoid some of the pitfalls of "living on the road" as it gives the reader a lot of practical information as well as a list of "tried and true" (or not so good) campsites across the U.S. I have never considered a "Pop-Up" before but with today's gas prices I might consider it!

Book Description

In this romantic adventure of wild Afghanistan, master storyteller James Michener mixes the allure of the past with the dangers of today. After an impetuous American girl, Ellen Jasper, marries a young Afghan engineer, her parents hear no word from her. Although she wants freedom to do as she wishes, not even she is sure what that means. In the meantime, she is as good as lost in that wild land, perhaps forever....
"An extraordinary novel....Brilliant."

5 out of 5 stars Still relevant.......2007-05-09

James Michener wrote Caravans in the 1960's and everything in this story is relevant today. Nothing seems dated in this wonderful story set in a country that should be foremost in our minds. In fact, also read Rory Stewart's book, Walking Through Afghanistan, for a another viewpoint.

3 out of 5 stars Better Than Hawaii.......2007-04-01

This book kept my attention throughout, fascinated me with the descriptions of Afghanistan and stark display of still-barbaric modern societies, and allured me with impassioned portrayals of human desire in lands with no law. Michener gives sufficient description and information to intrigue the reader, but doesn't bog us down with endless commentary like he did in Hawaii. His diverse and well developed characters and invoking plot carry the leader through nearly 400 pages with page-turning ease. And though his style is raw and early, it makes for a much better read than more than one of his subsequent works.

4 out of 5 stars not as great as Michener's usually are.......2007-02-21

It was so-so and not timely so I was disappointed to be truthful. We read it for my Book Club.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing overview of Afghan culture.......2007-02-08

I read this book years ago and reread it after 9/11. I was amazed to realize that many of Michener's observations were making their way into to daily news. This is not an academic treatment of Afghan culture, but I can't imagine a better book for getting a feel for the land and its people.

4 out of 5 stars Another great Michner story set in Afghanistan.......2006-11-16

The visual imagery in this story ranges from desolate poor, hot, dry deserts to beautiful lush green valleys with rushing water. The Afghanistan that Michener describes (sometime after WWII) seems very similar to the Afghanistan that seems to be there today. It seems to be a very harsh and sometimes beautiful land and that local knowledge is absolutely essential for survival. Besides vivid descriptions of the land, we get to meet some real colorful characters. The camel attendant should make you laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Great Listings But Poor Campground-Finding Tools.......2002-10-29

This book lists some great campgrounds. I would have given it a five-star rating, but unfortunately the book's locational tools are so poor that it's hard to find the campgrounds you want. Here are some examples:

We stayed at a recommended campground, Clear Lake State Park in California. The book's review was 100% on target, and it was a great place to camp.

But don't bother looking it up in the book's index because it's not there. Other state parks are in the index, so don't ask me why this one isn't.

Of course you can always use the book's map to locate all the campgrounds in a given area, right? Maybe not.

The book's map shows two black dots indicating campgrounds in the Clear Lake area at Kelseyville and Nice, towns near the campgrounds. I try to look up Kelseyville, but it's not listed. Eventually I find what I'm looking for under the nearby town of Lakeport (even though the address given in the listing is Kelseyville).

But that's just for starters. I was perusing the book after returning from our trip, and I noticed there was a campground listed under Middletown, a town we drove through on our way home. I missed this campground in my pre-trip research because the campground, Beaver Creek RV Park & Campground (p. 137), is omitted from the book's map. I know I'm not mistaken, because I looked it up and found it just south of Clear Lake using Tom Stienstra's book California Camping.

If I could find so many screw-ups in such a short period of time, I'm sure the book is loaded with them. On the other hand, the recommended site was excellent, and the information provided about it was accurate. I'm going to buy this book anyway, knowing that its poor campground-finding tools will make a lot more work for me and increase the risk of missing a campground within a given area.

Used in conjunction with Stienstra's California Camping, this book should help the reader pick the best campgrounds. For those looking for campgrounds located in the other covered states (Arizona, Nevada, Utah), this is still a worthy book worth your consideration. Or wait until the second edition comes out -- perhaps by then they'll have made the necessary improvements.
