Book Description
Old enough to remember his beginning, Chance Becket has spent all of his thirty years trying to forget, hiding his unsavory youth behind a society marriage and a prestigious position with the War Office. But now the widower must confront his past and return to the windswept coast of Romney Marsh . . . where the ghosts of his childhood still linger.
Newly hired governess Julia Carruthers is delighted to be in charge of Chance's young daughter and eager to escape the confines of London. Yet the excitement of the journey to her employer's strange home is nothing compared to the attraction between them. And when Julia sees something she should not, she wonders if Chance's sudden intentions are prompted by ungentlemanly desires or his need to protect his family's secrets.

A Gentleman by any Other Name.......2007-03-08
The is great. I came quickly and was in great shape.
I'm still not sure what I thought of this book..........2006-09-11
I'm on the 3rd book, Beware of Virtuous Women, and I'm still not entirely sure if I like this series. Usually, I can tell if it's a good book based on how easily I can put it down. There are very few narrative hooks compared to some of her other romances and I found ample moments to put the first 2 books down without really missing anything. In fact, it took me almost a week to finish the first one (almost unheard of for me; usually 2 days max per book). I liked the family and I liked Julie and Chance but I didn't LOVE anything. And I'm sorry but you would think a preachers daughter would try to stay pure longer than the 5 days or so that she does. The passion she tried to evoke between the 2 that would make me believe they just HAD to have each other just wasn't there.
Ms. Michaels tries to hook you with leaving little hints as to what happened on the island before they came to England and that kept me mildy intrigued but then I was thoroughly disappointed when I reached the end and nothing was revealed. Is she really going to keep this going for another 6 books (each sibling)?! I don't know if I can make it through that many.
I made it through the 2nd one with a little more enthusiasm because I thought Morgan was a little bit more interesting than Julie. At least she tried to do a little more character depth with Morgan, but I don't feel like I ever got to know Ethan.
I am enjoying the 3rd book so far, but I'm only into the first 2 chapters and once again I have set it down to do this and feel only a mild inclining to get back to it. To me, the writing seems forced. Like maybe Ms. Michaels had a great story idea, a new series of siblings to write about, and then was told she had to do so in half the time she normally takes to write a book. The writing seems rushed, the characters have less depth, and the plot seems to continue in one straight line with little or no twists to keep the reader intrigued. I think the books had potential and never quite reached it.
Dark and Dreary.......2006-08-18
I am a big fan of Ms Michaels. She usually writes spunky heroines, dapper heroes, and has a flair for humor that adds so much depth to the romance genre. I was disappointed by A Gentleman by Any Other Name, however.
In retrospect, I figure she was trying to write some sort of gothic romance, with windswept moors and brooding, complicated characters. A mass market Wuthering Heights. This story of Chance Becket, the eldest of Ainsely Becket's children (some adopted, some not) was melodramatic and oftentimes boring. Julia Carruthers, who happens to hail from nearby Chance's ancestral home, applies for and gets the job as Chance's daughter's nanny in London. But then they go back to the Marsh where Julia shows everyone how well she fits into the culture and goings on of this somewhat isolated village. Julia is nosy and annoying and has a tendency to be overbearing without having any of the other qualities in a heroine, such as humor, self depreciating or otherwise, which make the annoying traits bearable. The attraction between her and Chance is forced, and the book is quite frankly way too long. It's also obvious this will be one in a long line of books for every orphan, maybe with one or two of them pairing up with each other (ew, just because they aren't blood related, doesn't mean they aren't siblings!). I picked up another one at the same time, and just finished skimming it. Pretty much the same thing.
What saves this book is the host of secondary characters, including a cast of retired privateers, who make the story more interesting and fun. I won't be getting of the others in the series, and I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who enjoys the whimsical regency Ms Michaels often treats us too. This book, and it seems this series, are for readers who prefer long passages with no action, dark and brooding characters (seriously, most of them are), and irritating main characters.
Great Book! 1 of 3 books .......2006-08-15
This is my first review I have ever written. I am really enjoying this series. I am just starting on the 3rd book The Virtuous Woman! I could hardly put down the first two down. It has lost of fun twist & turns. It keeps you laughing! If you like this book you will LOVE # 2 The Dangerous Debutante! The wild child Morgan! It is even better!
could not finish this one.......2006-04-10
Actually, I couldn't make it past chapter five. The heroine is nosey, bossing, and irritating. The hero could have been interesting but I didn't have the mental strength to hang in long enough to find out. There are too many Characters (and I meant that to be capitalized) already. I regret missing the hero's little daughter and her stuffed rabbit Buttercup but I've too many other books yet to be read to waste anymore time on this one.

You'll be glad you read this--and now we wait for what McGaughey will come out with next.
Terrific, a real mindbender.......1998-01-14
Kyle Marchi is a household name since he is the heir to Holcomb billions. Kyle is also well known under the pseudonym of Stokes Moran, mystery reviewer and syndicated columnist. As a struggling writer, Kyle refuses to use either his real name or pseudonym to get his manuscript published. He has been rejected six times so far.
Disregarding his feelings, his agent-spouse submits the manuscript under the Moran name and it is immediately accepted. An angry Kyle reacts by calling the Times to announce that Moran died. The paper calls Moran's agent to verify the statement and his spouse reluctantly confirms the report. However, Kyle becomes the prime suspect when a murder victim bearing the identity of Moran is found on the lower West Side of Manhattan. Not trusting the police to dig deep enough when they have an easy target, Kyle investigates the case.
A CORPSE BY ANY OTHER NAME is fourth and apparently the final entry in the Moran series as writer Neil McGaughey plans to start a new series set in Natchez-Under-The-Hill. Readers will mourn the end of this wonderful collection of satirical melodramas because it is a delightful, humorous, and lively set of novels. This particular book pays homage to the great mystery writers of the past as well as the New York City book scene. Fans of mystery novels need to say their good-byes to a special amateur detective.

another funny story.......2005-10-09
Not her best work, but funny nonetheless. An unusual couple end up together - Stephanie Dares & Erik Chambers. Stephanie is trying to figure out the mystery of her parentage, and manages to enlist Erik's help, despite his reputation as a cutthroat businessman. They develop a love/hate relationship - they hate to admit to love - while they steer perilous course of the (minor)mystery.
Enjoyable with a slight annoying touch .......2004-08-07
I love Ms. Davidson's books. They have humor, they're sexy and great romance. The only thing I did not like about this book was how very naive Stephanie was and it was pretty ridiculous that she and Eric were afraid to say "I love you." Good grief they were all over each other, what do three little words mean when it should have been obvious how they both felt. But it was the heroine's actions that were really hard to take. How could anyone living in the 21st century be so unaware of what men and women do in bed. These flaws gave the book 3 stars otherwise I would have given it 5.
Funny, sexy, all out enjoyable read!.......2004-07-11
I know what I'm getting when I pick up a MaryJanice Davidson novel. I expect a droll, sexy, no-fuss read and I am never disappointed. By Any Other Name isn't as laugh-out-loud funny as Undead and Unwed and The Royal Treatment, but it is nevertheless full of Davidson's signature bantering and lighthearted humor. But this isn't just a light romantic comedy by any stretch, it has quite an interesting and compelling plot. Erik Chambers is known to be a ruthless, savvy businessman who has lost trust in women. But when he meets Stephanie, a tall, blonde and gorgeous, not to mention insubordinate and fiercely independent woman, his life isn't the same. Erik isn't exactly Prince Charming, and Stephanie can't stand him -- that is until she falls in love with him. They try to uncover and find closure to a poignant incident surrounding Stephanie's birth while pretending that they hate each other's guts. What follows is a humorous and moving story about love, family and... going fishing?
This is a great, fun little gem. The story surrounding Stephanie's past is very touching and it compelled me to finish it up in one sitting. Erik is an earnest hero -- flawed and far more realistic than most male characters in romance novels, though he got annoying at times. Stephanie is Davidson's typically strong, independent heroine with a mind of her own and a penchant for quips. Sometimes the novel got a bit sugarcoated for my taste. I like my romance to be edgy, erotic, creative and less formulaic than the dime-a-dozen romance novels out there, and Ms. Davidson has supplied that to me. This novel has a bit of the aforementioned sweet-as-candy narrative and dialogue, but what saves it from being formulaic for me is the strong, determined heroine. I loved it. By Any Other Name is the perfect novel to read on the beach or on a hammock during sunset. Another great one from MaryJanice Davidson! Enjoy...
Easy on the eyes,.......2004-04-28
Easy on the eyes and just plain fun! I had a lot of fun reading this book!
4 1/2 stars - Creative, funny, poignant and sexy!.......2003-11-08
This is my first book by this author and if you like a story that keeps you on your toes this one's for you. It's a roller coaster ride of ups and downs when Stephanie learns that she is not the orphan she always believed, but that her father is alive and well. And then she learns that Erik, the man she has developed a very reluctant attraction to, is the one man who can take her to meet her father. Their relationship is stormy to say the least, but an undeniable attraction lurks just below the surface.
Erik is rude, arrogant, bitter and ruthless but he's also incredibly handsome and sexy. Stephanie is no wimp and she's not intimidated by him in the least. But she also discovers that he has a keen sense of humour and is capable of an unexpected kindness that begins to grow on her. For Erik's part, he has become a bit protective of the optimistic, lively and open Stephanie, for he knows only too well how cold her father can be. His protective instincts surprise him and he discovers that he will do anything to keep her from being hurt. But he also knows that she needs to know the awful truth. At least he can be there for her when she confronts it!
But all is not what it seems, and there are twists in this story that you likely won't anticipate. Erik certainly doesn't, as he confronts her father with the declaration that he has come to care for "... one of the characters in this little psycho-drama you've created and we're both tired of the lies." But can they handle the truth? I won't spoil it by saying more, but suffice it to say that this is one convoluted and sad situation! Can anything good come from it? YES!
MaryJanice Davidson is an author that I will definitely be keeping my eye on and look forward to reading more from! A recommended read!

Is it for me?.......2006-10-15
I am honestly questioning my sexuality every day and I wanted to read a book or something that would give me an assurance as to what I am - Straight, Bi, or Lesbian?
I wanted to know if this book is for me to read to answer my questions or are there any other books to read?
Please Help... I am very much in the closet and cannot discuss my issues with anyone - sO I would like to resolve it myself.
Thanks.
Historical book still relevant today!.......2006-06-06
This ground breaking book gave voice to a generation of previously unseen bisexuals. Rather than arguing statistics or debating the sexuality of long dead celebrities, Hutchins and Ka'ahumanu gave a space to normal bisexuals who told their lives.
This created a new genre for books on Bisexuality. It is still as empowering and relevant todat as it was back then
Love sees no gender! .......2006-04-23
For any of you who do not already self-identify as pansexual or bi, this ground-breaking, multicultural, pro-feminist, bisexual reader will make you re-examine your monosexuality. Through the use of personal narratives, the writers explore such issues as: the process of coming out, the bi community, self-affirmation,the politics of bisexual liberation and biphobia amongst heterosexuals, lesbians and gay men. For too long, biphobia and transphobia have fragmented the queer community. Just as white supremacy is used by the ruling-class to divide workers, transphobia and biphobia prevent us from being a truly powerful force against the patriarchy. In short, this wonderful book is a welcolme addition to Third Wave feminist discourse on sexual fluidity and radical queer activism.
in 1991 it was a big step forward.......2004-09-11
In 13 years some of the 75 pieces in this collection may seem a bit dated, or perhaps I just hope that there are more resources and more acceptance for bisexuals. The book is divided into four main sections that focus on a particular concern for bisexuals: coming-out; personal stories; community; and politics. Finally there is a history of bisexual activism in the USA. Most of the pieces are essays of a fairly personal nature but there are a few interviews, some poetry, and some visuals; there are even some non-bisexuals writing about their friends and family who have come out to them.
best book on bisexual issue- great for anyone!!!.......2004-05-03

I loved this book-
Finally a book -that bridges the grey-..
I read a whole bunch of bisexual books and by far this was the best written- I highly suggest this be the book you read on this subject- before any of the others....

Suspenseful, intriguing, a great read!!! So great, I just read it for the second time!!! Being so familiar with the Cincinnati area, and reading about all the landmarks that were included in the story, I felt as if I were a part of the story. Once I started reading, I absolutely could not put it down!! I am looking forward to more of Lynn Davis and her adventures in the next novel!!
Surprised.......2006-04-21
I must first start by saying that this is an excellent read. I don't normally read these kinds of book, but like the other reviewers I found it hard to put down. Excellently written. Kudos to GiGi Gossett
Impressive and entertaining!.......2005-05-24
Once I picked it up, I found it very hard to put it down again and ended up reading into the wee-hours of the late evenings! Ms. Gossett's storytelling and ability to keep the reader in suspense was amazing! As I was reading it, I felt Ms. Gosssett was there in the room with me telling me a story!
I also loved how she craftfully weaved in diversity themes throughout and it was refreshing to read a story based in Cincinnati where I have lived and worked.
It was a real treat living out the story plot and trying to play out in my mind - Who dunnit? I was surprised at the ending and with the very last cliffhanger. I truley believe this would make for a great suspense movie and the book is as good as any Grisham novel I've read (and I have read them all!)!
Kudos to Ms. Gossett who has "come into her own" and deserves so much success with this book!
By Any Other Name.......2005-02-08
Every now and then, I'll read a book that is so exciting I have a hard time putting it down....well this is one of those books. I read a lot of mysteries, but this one was more exciting because of the secondary plot. The author describes the characters and the scenes so vividly, I caught myself living through the book like I was part of it. I can hardly wait for the next Lynn Davis story.
Satisfying.......2004-12-08
The book was like reading "the Notebook" in that the real satisfaction comes in how the stories resolve. I enjoyed the author weaving social issues of today into the story; it made for a richer reading experience than others in the genre.

FROM THE CRIME TO THE RIDICULOUS
From the offbeat but razor-edged imagination of Spider Robinson: stranded time travelers; squabbling cosmic warriors; reincarnated rock stars; blind starship pilots; monsters both human and alien; tomorrows formed by today's trends--this Spider weaves a web of wonder.
Sound profound? Nah! Herein we've got a partially-disembodied Brooklynite looking for his, er, bottom half, a past-tense-ignoring player of a certain New York crap game from 1930 running loose in the present, a compendium of the silliest weapons history never had, and plenty more. The warped and the way-out combine in a book that by any name would be...really cool!

Sturgeon would approve........2001-03-10
Yes, this is a re-release of previously published material, but good luck finding it anywhere else! It took 3 years for Amazon to come up with a used copy of Antinomy for me, and when they did, they wanted $27.00 for it (paperback) and no I didn't buy it. And I have yet to see it in any used book store. Moreover, without your support, authors like Spider Robinson will find it increasingly difficult to stay in business.
And THIS book is WONDERFUL, and worth every penny. I am having trouble thinking of a single instance in which Spider Robinson has ever published a clunker, and some of the stories in this book are among his best, IMO. Melancholy Elephants, Antinomy, Satan's Children, Apogee, and True Minds are among my favorites in the book (I've yet to read the last two). As always, Spider's writing is sensitive, thoughtful, and very, very human, just like the author himself. Strongly influenced by the work and life of Ted Sturgeon (whose work is also a must-read if you haven't yet) his stories are sometimes poignant, sometimes hilarious, and always a good read. Buy one for yourself, and three to give away.
Ups and Downs Galore.......2001-03-04
Here is a collection of short stories by Spider Robinson that have nothing to do with Callahan's Saloon. This is the second of his short story collections without the Irishman's bar. And is as good as the first. Where the first short story book, User Friendly, gave the reader the warm fuzzies wrapped around great SF stories, this book puts the reader on a roller coaster of emotions. From the depressing to the thoughtful, from the punny to the erotic, By Any Other Name, is a book to read. A word of warning, from me, and somewhat from Mr. Robinson, the stories are mixed in a way that there is generally one happy story, then one depressing one. Read a depressing one, then a happy one. You'll end up liking yourself better!
A must for Spider fans!.......2001-02-28
True, this is a collection of Spider's older work, but those works are out of print. People who shop at used bookstores, instead of paying the extra money (when they can afford to) will put authors out of work. OK, business lecture is over. On to the review
All of the stories in the collection are excellent, but some stand out more than others. The title piece, which incidentally is at the end of the book, _By Any Other Name_, has a protagonist who has descended into the ruins of a post apocalyptic NYC to kill a mad scientist responsible for a plague that killed off most of man kind. In true Spider Robinson style, the base concepts of revenge, killing, fear and who is or isn't one's enemy come ot the forefront. The science takes a back seat to the moral dilemmas, which are deep, and meaningful to anyone at any time.
The rest of the stories share that style. They ask us to question our emotions and our values by presenting people who are forced to do so through such plot devices as a drug that addicts people to tell the truth, perpetual copyrights, and a host of other causes that have unforeseen effects. It is his ability to ask those questions that separates Spider Robinson from so many other Science Fiction authors who craft good stories, but never made me *think* about the deeper things.
For those people out there who agree with the first part of my review on supporting authors by buying their books and not getting a cheaper copy at a used bookstore, try checking out http://www.spiderrobinson.com, and following the amazon dot com link back to here. That way you not only support Spider by buying his book, but also by his amazon dot com affiliate site.
Repackaged Old Material.......2001-02-27
With one or two brief exceptions, this (as well as Robinson's other recent anthology "User Friendly") is a reissue of material from his out-of-print anthology "Meloncholy Elephants" and the still older "Antinomy." Hit the used bookstores first, save your money.
A Book of Great Short Stories.......2001-02-19
Spider Robinson is one of the Great Ones. He's Part Heinlein, part McCaffrey, part Brin (from his early days when he had hope), and part something undefinable yet incredibly special. I don't like short stories (I usually end up feeling gipped), I get emotionally vested in the characters and then the story is over. These stories are worth it. Despite the disimilar settings each story is really about people and relationships, and the darkest story still has a ray of hope. I've been recomending Spider Robinson's stories to people since 1989, so far every person I've recommended him to has fallen in love with his characters.

Average Mystery.......2001-03-31
Alice, the amateur sleuth, spends most of her time in the book struggling to prove to everyone that her friend Barbara did not commit suicide, but was instead murdered. The plot was clever, but I found myself not very interested in most of the other characters. Barbara's husband Tim was a pretty intriguing guy, but some of the secrets that came out about him didn't get very far in the story. I'm also a little puzzled as to why most of the characters, whom all had very different personalities and backgrounds, all had the same reaction to Alice's declaration that Barbara was murdered. Hmmm. I'll probably try to read a few other books in the series to see if perhaps I just happened to pick up one of Adamson's weaker ones.

Indian history for children.......2003-06-08
This story introduces children to the great Indian king through the story of a little boy's concern with his name.
Very Nice Message.......2003-03-23
This book, featuring a South Asian Indian-American boy, nicely captured feelings about an unusual name and trying to fit in. The multicultural aspect and the words of advice from an African-Ameican teacher were a nice message. It was a little long for the kindergarten set, but when I read it to my son's class, it sparked a nice discussion with the children eagerly talking about their names. This book should be in every school or daycare library!
A Great Book!.......2003-03-23
This book featuring a South Asian Indian-American boy led to interesting discussions about names with my children. The situation was realistic and I liked the multicultural aspect with the talk between Ashok and and an African-American teacher.
A bit unexpected..........2000-07-18
The book is a joy, though perhaps not for a child as young as is recommended. I was surprised that the book isn't simply about "an immigrant boy who wishes he had a more American name" as all the reviews of this book implied. The book has quite a heavy undertheme of the wrongs of African slavery in America. While it is certainly a topic that should be discussed with a child, it isn't one that I am ready to introduce to my young child quite yet. This book will be wonderful at 7-8 years of age.
Wonderful story!.......1999-05-27
I really wondered how the story would be resolved and I loved it. It was a very realistic but also inspiring ending. Kudos to the author. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.
