Book Description

“As nearly perfect as any American fiction I know,” is how Reynolds Price (The New York Times) described this classic that has been a favorite of readers, both here and in Europe, for almost forty years. Set in provincial France in the 1960s, it is the intensely carnal story—part shocking reality, part feverish dream —of a love affair between a footloose Yale dropout and a young French girl. There is the seen and the unseen—and pages that burn with a rare intensity.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Eloquent and erotic........2007-07-12

The writing is lovely. Salter strings together words in a refreshing and clean style. The story itself didn't grab me the way I had hoped it would after reading previous reviews. It's not so much a love story as it is a lust story and as such it never quite gets off the ground. Perhaps because it was written 40 years ago and nowadays we are so inundated with graphic sex scenes that those in the book failed to titillate as no doubt they were intended, although I still found them somewhat alluring.
The two lovers (Dean and Anne-Marie) characters are never fully realized so I didn't feel any emotional connection to them (and I'm unsure if they felt any emotional connection to each other).
I enjoyed the vagueness of the narrator. Everything is described by him, as though he were imagining what the young lovers were doing, so the line between reality and fantasy was so blurred that the reader is left unsure as to what actually transpired behind closed doors, which is perhaps the point.
Absolutely worth reading thanks to the languorous language.

3 out of 5 stars Objectification as Art.......2006-04-01

Salter has an incredible sensuous style, so I'm giving this three stars because I just like how he puts the words together on the page. But for me this books feels utterly dated. It was apparently written in the 1960's and it shows -- disaffected American (Dean) hangs out in France, has lots of erotic yet completely emotionally unfulfilling sex. No one communicates very deeply with anyone, nothing seems to have a point and of course it all ends badly. I suspect it seems much more meaningful if you are a certain sex (not mine) and beyond a certain age.

The sex (did I mention there's lots of it?) is vividly described yet weirdly depressing. Why? Maybe it's because I'm a woman and the woman in this story is treated as an absolute object. There is no real effort made to get into her head, and she appears to exist solely to be a docile receptacle for Dean's sperm. For all the emotional involvement our hero feels for her, he might as well have just bought an inflatable doll. So yeah, I find that kind of depressing.

5 out of 5 stars A Thrill and a Seduction.......2006-02-23

This book set me spinning in dilemna trying to decide whether to devour or to savor each of leaf of this luscious novel. It's so delicious it drove me crazy wondering if I should have taken it all at once or milked it nice and slow to last me forever. James Salter can do this to a girl. Seductive and poetic prose fills the lines with the most evocative imagery I've seen in a long, long time. Just be ready for that cold shower, if you know what I mean. It's subtly spicy from the start, with language so intriguing it's impossible not to fall in love -- unless you are totally out of touch with your own sensuality -- or unless you hate the French, which is of course a common sentiment in many political climates. But the novel is not about the French, only the language of love that the French so enjoy.

Keep an open mind and be delightfully thrilled and seduced by the world and the characters created here.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-02-20

I bought this book and also Last Night based upon the gushing reviews you see above. Who are they kidding? The main character is a cad. It is far from "a tour de force" in erotic anything. His short stories in Last Night are only marginally better. Your time is better spent with other authors.

5 out of 5 stars Even better the second time around.......2005-11-09

I first read this novel when it was new, in the late sixties, and I liked it because I, too, had been a student in France and had experienced some cross-cultural coupling during those years. I appreciated the evocation of small city life, smoky cafés, dumpy hotels, and all the rest -- and yes, the sex scenes were great.

I've just (autumn 2005) reread the novel again, almost forty years down the line, and I discover a profundity and philosophical depth that escaped me the first time around. I hardly know of a book that better describes the mystery of sexuality, and its connection with the deepest questions of existence. And o yes, the descriptions of smoky cafés and the joys of screwing are still there -- it's just that there's a lot more to Salter's work, which merits the highest praise. The author has attempted to create a transcendent legend from the encounter of two ordinary and even shallow people, and he has succeeded. The influences of Hemingway and Miller are evident, but the true model is classical mythology. Five stars, or ten maybe.

Enter the unforgettable world of New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens, creator of the phenomenal Cynster family. This amazing clan -- and their friends -- is a bold, powerful group of men who let nothing stand in their way when it comes to matters of the heart. And in this, Stephanie Laurens's newest novel, a passionate man and a daring woman confront the ultimate question. . . .

What Price Love?

There is nothing more fascinating than a darkly handsome rake, especially one as controlled and elusive as Dillon Caxton, protégé of Demon Cynster. Despite his dangerous air, Dillon is a man of sterling reputation, but it wasn't always so. Years ago, an illicit scheme turned into a nefarious swindle, and only the help of his cousin, Felicity, and her husband, Demon, saved Dillon from ruin. Now impeccably honest, he guards his hard-won reputation and is the Keeper of the Register of all racing horses in England. His standing and aloofness make Dillon undeniably desirable to young ladies, but despite all the lures thrown his way, he remains uninterested -- his attention unfixed.

Until ""Miss Priscilla Dalling"" erupts into his life. A stunning beauty, she affects Dillon as no other ever has, but what fascinates him even more is that this tempting young lady is clearly desperate, and equally clearly lying about wanting to see the Register to fulfill the whim of an eccentric aunt.

Lady Priscilla Dalloway will do anything to see what's in the Register -- even lie! Her twin brother, Russell, who had fought with their father and left the family home to work with the finest racehorses, has disappeared. Pris knows that clues to his whereabouts can be found in the tome Dillon Caxton refuses to let her see.

She unleashes her feminine wiles on Dillon -- to no avail. But Dillon is now determined to learn the truth behind her quest. Exploiting the powerful attraction that flares between them, he succeeds in convincing Pris to tell him all, to trust him with her twin's life. Together, Dillon and Pris locate Rus, only to discover that his life is being threatened by the perpetrators of a massive betting swindle.

The time is ripe for Dillon to repay old debts by helping another as he himself was helped. Assisted by Demon, Felicity, and Barnaby Adair, Dillon and Pris embark on a journey riddled with danger -- and undeniable passion -- as they seek to overturn the swindle and expose Rus's deadly enemies. And along the way they discover the answer to that age-old question: What price love?

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE.......2007-06-29

This is the first book that I actually returned. I could not get past the boring racing setup and the fact that these two conceited people only have eyes for each other...because they are both so very beautiful. I couldnt get past the first chapter. Yuk!

1 out of 5 stars What Price Love? Do negative integers count?.......2007-06-12

I was rather surprised by the reviewers who stated they didn't care for the horse racing aspect of this book. I found that angle to be blessed relief from the overly-narcissitic protagonists Priscilla and Dillon.

Barely 1/4 of the way into the book we read Priscilla's thought: "The last thing I need is to grow infatuated with a damned Englishman, especially one who's more handsome than I am." But long before this page the reader is treated to a number of other examples of how poor Pris and Dillon are burdened by their extraordinary good looks. Was Ms. Laurens trying to garner sympathy for these folks or just give the reader a good laugh? (Neither worked for me.)

It feels as though Ms. Laurens decided to throw some not very interesting people together within a lackluster plot and then, as if to make up for the former, added some well-researched horse racing information. The result is a very odd combination.

I put this book in the "donate" pile before I even finished chapter six. I have enjoyed other books by Ms. Laurens but this one just wasn't worth my time.

1 out of 5 stars 300 pages too long!.......2007-05-23

This is the first book I haven't read through to the end. I kept putting it down until I just read the middle of what was left and the end. Too much equine racing info and too much sex. The first time they had sex was about a third into the book. What happened w/ the anticipation? w/ the going crazy from wanting to have and not getting... Agh, this book was so boring and dissapointing...

5 out of 5 stars Another can't put down EXCELLENT read !.......2007-03-28

I Have never been disappointed with anything Stephanie Laurens, writes. She is one of my favorite authors.
I love reading the Cynster novels and their adventures .
I cannot wait for the next book !

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?.......2007-03-22

Poor poor Pris and Dillon - they are bogged down by the weight of their own extraordinary beauty and their "wild and reckless" -- someone should actually count just how many times that phrase appears in the book -- natures. The entire population of England AND Ireland wants them and they are excessively bored by it all...until they meet each other, that is. At last, they've each found something stimulating, but the trade-off is that WE are the ones who have to be bored for the rest of the novel. There's a convoluted and stupid subplot about horse racing featuring a mysterious supervillain who doesn't actually make an appearance until the last fifty pages, just in time for him to threaten the well-being of our dramatically alluring heroine so our hero can save her. And, not to give it away or anything, but save her he does, although by that point you'll probably be wishing he'd been a fraction too late in your haste to be rid of these characters and their cliche psychoses.

Initially unable to communicate, Avery is given plastic surgery that makes her "good as new." Stripped of her identity and completely vulnerable, she learns of an insider's plot to assassinate her "husband"--and she's supposedly in on it. I enjoyed knowing that these love stories would always have a happy ending. This would be a wonderful relaxing read for the beach.

1 out of 5 stars Not good at all.......2007-07-07

I normally like Sandra Brown's books, however this book of three novels must been very early work. It is so terrible I gave up in disgust and did not finish the last novel. I regret purchasing it.

5 out of 5 stars Get it..it's great!!.......2005-01-21

I happened across this book in a used book store. I'm a fan of Sandra Brown, although I don't cut her any slack when I read one that isn't what I expected. Let's face it, we have to tell it like it really is. But all three of the stories in this one book happen to be some of Sandra's very best writing. Do yourself a favor and get it. I thought it was greeeaaatttttttt!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Liked the first 2, the other was so-so.......2003-04-09

The 1992 edition of this book is riddled with spelling errors and poor punctuation. I found 10 errors alone in SHH. I enjoyed the first 2 novels. I like the mystery aspect of both. The third, SHH was sub-par. I lost interest half-way through. A great bargain overall. Smaller print than most hardcovers.

5 out of 5 stars Sandra Brown is a literaray genius.......2002-01-29

I do not understand where all these bad reviews are coming form, I am a huge Sandra Brown fan, and I think that three stories in one was the perfect idea, by the time I have finished one, I'm ready to go to read all Sandra Browns books, and best kept secrets was one of my favorites, as for some of the other reviews, Sandra Brown writes fiction novels, so they are based soley on the creativity she finds within herself, and I think that she has done a dam good job at keeping us all entertain. No matter what she writes she does it in a way where I can not put the book down!

A great read for our long drive home from work. We get caught up in the characters' lives and situations thinking we have the mystery all worked out, but there's that subtle twist in the end. As with all of Tony Hillerman's novels, the background information of the Navajo way of life is interesting and obviously well-researched. Place names are familiar and detailed to give you a sense of the area. We enjoy these tapes very much.

Book Description

This is Leda Swann's first full–length novel for Avon. She brings all the passion and excitement of her previous novellas to this story about how far we will go for the ones we love.

Caroline Clemens is at her wits end. Orphaned and responsible for the welfare of her four younger siblings, she's certain it's only a matter of time before she losees everything. When she meets Dominc Savage, passions ignite and they soon strike a deal that benefits both parties. But their desire for each other soon outweighs any "business"deal between them and the two lovers suddenly find themselves playing by an entirely different set of rules.

4 out of 5 stars Romance Junkies review of THE PRICE OF DESIRE.......2007-04-10

Caroline Clemons is the daughter of a bankrupt banker who not only left his family without means to support themselves, but who also killed himself and left Caroline to pick up the pieces. Betrothed to Captain Bellamy, Caroline attends a party with the hopes of convincing her fiancé to marry her sooner rather than later. However, the captain has other plans, plans that do not include a penniless wife and her four brothers and sisters. Terribly frantic and out of options, Caroline accepts a scandalous offer from the notorious Dominic Savage. She will enjoy a night of sensual delights with the compelling man before succumbing to a fatalistic end the next day.

Dominic Savage's enigmatic gaze lights upon Caroline Clemons during a lavish party. Knowing that the young widow of a dead banker might be inclined for some company, he begins his blazing seduction only to be told she is engaged and to whom. Letting her know that he will be there for her when she is jilted, Dominic sits back and patiently waits. When he finds her crying quietly, he applies a few touches and fleeting kisses - Caroline is his. Too late, however, Dominic realizes that the widow was in fact a maiden. When she appears to have vanished into thin air the next morning, Dominic will stop at nothing to find her.

THE PRICE OF DESIRE took me on an emotional roller coaster. My feelings for Dominic fluctuated from moment to moment - I was alternately mad at him for bargaining with Caroline, then giddy about his prominent feelings of respect and love. His love for Caroline made their relationship complete. While I didn't always like his methods of bringing Caroline into his life - bargaining and setting a price for her to be his mistress - I couldn't help but be in awe of his ability to love Caroline completely and unconditionally. I expected her feelings to be no less and was not disappointed.

THE PRICE OF DESIRE is a tie-in with the novel SUGAR AND SPICE, also released by Leda Swann. I was treated to another look at characters first introduced in SUGAR AND SPICE and found myself wanting to go back and re-read both books once more for good measure!

5 out of 5 stars Body and Soul Desire.......2007-02-10

The desire to have someone body and soul turns into love in this erotic historical romance tale of the beautiful young and innocent virgin Caroline Clemons who suddenly finds herself and her siblings penniless after the suicide of her prominent society banker father. She is depending on the honor of Captain Bellamy to hold to their engagement agreement. When he breaks the engagement and offers her the position of mistress instead of wife, Caroline is devastated. She sees her father's way as the easy way out. As she sits in the conservatory at a society gathering and plans the taking of her siblings life and herself, the handsome and wealthy Dominic Savage approaches her. He is under the misconception that she is the widow of the now deceased banker. He has desired her for his mistress from the moment he saw her across the room. Thinking this is to be her last evening alive, she gives up her innocence to Dominic with such passion that he wants her body and soul. Later that night, Caroline discovers she cannot go through with her plan and the following morning she and her siblings enter the local workhouse. Once again the evil Captain Bellamy tries to manipulate her to becoming his mistress and arranges it so that she is removed from the workhouse. As she and her siblings are being removed to the streets once again, Dominic steps in to rescue her. Now that she has no other alternative and he appears to be more honest and upfront in his offer, and mostly because she cannot forget the passion and pleasure she experienced when he took her virginity, she takes him up on his offer. He takes her and her family in and provides a home, education and dowries. She in turn is to provide him with every desire and pleasure and he will teach her everything he has learned about pleasure in India. At first Caroline is shy and uncomfortable, but soon learns to make the best of the arrangement. When Dominic takes her on a trip to spend time at a house of pleasure called Sugar and Spice, he comes to realize that he does not want to share Caroline with any other man. He discovers that he not only wants her to belong to him body and soul - he now wants to win her heart. He then begins to court her, but when a strange twist of fate causes him to lose his fortune, he can no longer keep her and she moves to the small estate given to her by Dominic in their original agreement. Caroline is then pursued by numerous gentlemen desiring her pleasures, but it is only Dominic that fills her thoughts and desires. When she finally has no choice but to offer herself up for auction in order to continuing supporting herself and her siblings, one bidder offers "...my love for you, because that is all I have to offer." The Price of Desire is a passionate, moving story of hardship, desire, passion and love that is not only a good sensual story, but well-written with substance. An excellent erotic read.

4 out of 5 stars fine historical erotic romance .......2007-02-03

Her banking father's death leaves Caroline Clemens and her younger siblings in monstrous debt. Her only hope to keep her and her brothers and sisters out of the workhouse is her pending marriage to Captain Bellamy. However instead of her fiancé meeting her, he is courting a different female as the Clemens brood is no longer worthy of his social climbing ambitions. Dominic Savage introduces himself to Caroline and offers her a deal to pay off the debts of her late father Isaac and insure the future of her siblings outside of the workhouse in exchange for her fulfilling his every male desire. Reluctantly seeing no options she agrees to a deal with the handsome devil.

Caroline refuses to wallow in pity or shame as she becomes Savage's mistress. He, in turn, teaches her the pleasure of sex including tough love. As she fulfills his desires with passion and he takes what she offers and much more, she falls in love with her "owner", but knows that soon he will discard her just like Bellamy did as a mistress has short bed cycle. Unbeknownst to Caroline, Dominic fell in love with her from the moment he recognized the beating of her courageous heart.

This Victorian era (it may actually be Regency) erotic romance showcases the choices a poor person had as Caroline must choose between becoming a kept woman or along with her younger siblings go to the workhouse where the destitute work for room and board (think Oliver Twist). The relationship between the lead couple seems realistic for the nineteenth century (some will say today too) though some readers will be turned off as he bought her, pleasure trained her; and forced her to do things she did not want to do. Still sub-genre fans will appreciate THE PRICE OF DESIRE as Caroline's courage and sacrifice make a fine tale.

Though Martha is outstanding as a partner to The Doctor, many of us still miss Rose. Fortunately there are books out that still partner her with The Doctor and "The Price of Paradise" was a delight for sore eyes.

Book Description

Queenisha Renae claims that she takes no mess from no man-that is until she meets Zeke Washington, a handsome Denzel Washington look-alike, at a charity fundraiser-and buys him lock, stock, and barrel for one night. Determined to get her money's worth, Queenie approaches their first date with one goal in mind: to make Zeke her one and only man, no matter what the cost. With the help of her best friend, Poetta, who schemes to put a 'voodoo hex' on Zeke to help lure him in, Queenie gets more than she bargained for when she meets Zeke's highly unusual roommate, Sweet Willie. In the meantime, she is being relentlessly pursued by co-worker Raymondo Carlos Castillo Morales-a man she wants no part of, even if he was the last man walking the earth. And Poetta has problems of her own when the married man she's in love with suddenly drops dead from a love spell gone wrong. The High Price of a Good Man is a hilarious and unexpectedly touching story about two women's misadventures in love.

4 out of 5 stars Looking For Love in all the Wrong Places.......2005-05-17

Queenie is far from insecure. She'll let you know that not even her plus size frame can make her vulnerable to no good men. She loves herself. All 6 feet of herself! She has no problem with turning the heads of men. She just wishes she can find a man of her own.

The Queen encounters Zeke Washington and fights to make him hers. She tries to change herself inside and out, even listens to her best friend Poetta's advice on throwing in a voodoo love charm.

Raymo starts a war of his own. He fights to make the Queen his forever. He loves Queenie just the way she is. His only problem is being too short, so she thinks, along with being a pest!

The High Price of A Good Man is another "looking for love in all the wrong places" read. We give all we have to man who can't accept us for who we are, while the true men of our dreams pass us right on by.
Still, with the many twists and turns, and the surprise Raymo has in store, makes The High Price of A good Man a delightful, sassy, fun read.

5 out of 5 stars You'll never know where you'll find true love........2004-06-08

This book is hysterically funny. It had me laughing out loud on the New York subway. Especially the parts where Queen interacts with her co-worker Raymo and her dates roommate, "Sweet Willie". Where does Debra come up with this stuff? If you're looking for a good read, I highly recommend this book.

L. Hayes, author of "Afroetry".

4 out of 5 stars Lord Why Do I Always Get the Wrong Man.......2004-03-18

Queenisha Renae Sutton is a full-figured diva, large and in charge, and she doesn't care who knows it!! Queenie begins this book by saying, "First of all, just for the record, I love me some me." Her infectious sass and go-getter attitude sparkle throughout the book.

Queenie has two constants in her life--her best friend Poetta James, a "candle-burning, incantation chanting" sister, whose specialty is "the beautification of hair;" and Raymundo Carlos Morales Castillo, or "Raymo", the male buyer at Macy's, where Queenie works. Not only is Raymo Queenie's male counterpart, he is hopelessly in love with her, and goes out of his way to show her his affection. Unfortunately Miss Queenie persists in degrading and embarrassing the man as much as possible without putting her job in jeopardy. Raymo reminds Queenie too much of Monroe, her first Latin lover, the man who broke her heart.

Into every diva's life an obstacle must fall--Queenie's obstacle comes in the form of a man by the name of Ezekiel "Zeke" Washington. Zeke is a Denzel Washington look-alike up for auction at an AIDS Date-a-thon, which Queenie attends after being pressured by Poetta. After paying over $1200 to date Zeke for one night, Queenie comes up with several elaborate schemes to persuade Zeke that she is the woman he needs. Zeke's only concern is Queenie's size. He even gives her "herbal pills" to assist her in losing weight. Not only does Queenie begin to lose weight; she also loses her self-esteem in her quest to make Zeke her man. Her stunts range from amusing to outrageous, but the reader will feel Queenie's pain.

Debra Phillips weaves a wonderful story in The High Price of a Good Man. When I first began to read it, I immediately thought "ghetto fiction", however, at its conclusion, I deemed it a very good story, filled with drama and comedy; with just enough "ghetto flavor" to keep it interesting to the younger reader, yet not turn off older readers. I must add that I especially loved the poem on the dedication page. It's touching and sweet.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, witty, and honest........2003-12-29

I really liked "The High Price of a Good Man." It was a little wordy and slow reading in the beginning but once we met Sweet Willie things picked up. Women "big or small" can appreciate the humor and camaraderie between these characters. I found the story entertaining and the situations painfully true. I admire the honesty, the wit and humor applied to the topics of friendship, love, self-esteem, and weight. We have to love ourselves before we can love anyone else!

5 out of 5 stars Love don't cost a thang.......2003-12-17

Hats off to Debra what a funny and enjoyable book. The book was a wonderful story that kept the reader wanting more, never a dull moment. The story will make you laugh out loud a must buy if you want a good funny book about two friends and their crazy love connections. Love will make you do strange things. Can't wait for your next novel this one was great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Gift.......2006-12-25

After reading the one I bought for a friend, I bought four more! Three for friends who allow their homes to be ruled by monarchs with 4 legs, and one for my dog!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps a Tad Too Many Cats..........2004-04-14

Just kidding. Cats are fine. I had a cat once. He was great. (Thought he was a dog, you know.) Anyway, this little book is full of witty -- and true! -- observations about our most common animal companions. Price's humor is so accurate, it's scary. She really captures the personalities of cats and dogs. Buy this book and learn what guide dogs do on their down time and what greeting cards would be like if cats wrote them. This book also makes a great gift for fellow dog (and cat) lovers.

Book Description

The corpse had been "scalped," its palms and soles removed after death. Sergeant Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police knows immediately he will have his hands full with this case -- a certainty that is supported by the disturbing occurrences to follow. A mysterious nighttime plane crash, a vanishing shipment of cocaine, and a bizarre attack on a windmill only intensify Chee's fears. A dark and very ill wind is blowing through the Southwestern desert, a gale driven by Navajo sorcery and white man's greed. And it will sweep away everything unless Chee can somehow change the weather.

5 out of 5 stars NOW, THAT'S MORE LIKE IT!.......2007-01-03

Recently I read THE SHAPE SHIFTER by Tony Hillerman and was disappointed by the overall shoddiness of the writing and story. It just wasn't what I had come to expect from, arguably, one of the best writers to come along in recent years. So I went back and read THE DARK WIND. I suppose I wanted to see whether my expectations had become unfairly high or if there really was an appreciable difference between one of Hillerman's early novels and his latest.

What I discovered was absolutely striking. Here in THE DARK WIND was the detail, the thought, the word-smithing excellence and the professionalism that made Hillerman a sensation. Here were the various single threads of plotline that seem, at first, to be so disconnected and unrelated but that, in the hands of the master, are then woven into the fabric of a splendid story. I rediscovered that THE DARK WIND is what I have come to expect from a Hillerman tale and its characteristics are to be found in many of Hillerman's most esteemed works. Here are the allusions to Navajo culture, with its simplicity, charm and mysticism, interspersed with the trappings of the modern world as Jim Chee comes face to face with mystery, murder and witchery. Here were the colors, scenery and the splendor that Hillerman invariably sets as the backdrop to his stories. Here was the literary integrity that I have missed in Hillerman's more recent offerings.

If you've just read THE SHAPE SHIFTER and have determined to take an indefinite break from Tony Hillerman, think again and pick up one of his earlier stories. You might want to do what I did and reread THE DARK WIND!

THE HORSEMAN

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Just Excellent........2005-02-02

I have read every one of Hillerman's books and now I am working my way through them as books on tape. Gil Silverbird read this book and he did a fantastic job.

"The Dark Wind" is one of Hillerman's best. He gives you a good solid bit of Native culture with a murder and a drug deal gone bad and it makes an unbeatable combination. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars "A dark wind has entered his soul" .......2004-09-22

"Enemies unseen... Fears unspoken...... A dark wind has entered his soul"

Navajo Tribal Police Sgt. Jim Chee seems to be batting zero; so far he has not been able to solve a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. In an area that was joint use land between the Navaho and the Hopi (now Hopi) Sgt Jim Chee is given the task of finding the vandal that keeps destroying a windmill placed there to make Hopi life easer. He hears an airplane landing in the dark of night with no lights. The plane crashes and leaves a dying pilot. Also a dead man sitting up against a rock with a note in his hand saying if you want it back contact...

Sgt Chee is told that it is probably drugs and federal jurisdiction. Chee is not supposed to go anywhere near or have anything to do with the case. He has his own problems with the mill, a missing thief, and a mysterious ritual death. Naturally he listens, and can not help it if they overlap.

One of the reasons for reading Hillerman's books maybe more important than the overlying mystery is the descriptions of the area and the Ways of the Navaho and Hopi. Hillerman suggests you also read "The Book of the Hopi" by Frank Waters.

Not as intricate as the book but still fun is the movie "Dark Wind" (Lou Diamond Phillips as Officer Jim Chee, Fred Ward as Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn)

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2003-10-16

"The Dark Wind" is a very interesting book. It has a lot of suspense and Hillerman takes you into the book with his descriptions. This book is a murder mystery that keeps you thinking. It also keeps getting weirder as you read.
The book starts with three Hopi Indians walking up a trail and discovering a boot lying in the middle of it. They walk up the trail a little ways more and discover a dead body. The body was reported and picked up some time after the three Hopis discovered it. by the time it was recovered it couldn't be identified. Later in the book Jim Chee (the main character) is told to watch a windmill that has been vandalized two times before. in the middle of the night Chee hears a plane flying low, but cant see any lights from it. a short while later he hears a crash and goes to investigate. When he gets there he finds two people dead and one that is almost dead. He trys to find out what happened form the one that is alive, but he dies before he can say anything.
The book keeps going like this getting Chee mixed up in all of it. Chee knows he didn't do anything wrong, but he is the only one that thinks that he is innocent. Over all I would recommend this book to any body that likes mysteries or that just wants a book that makes you think and makes you feel like your right there with the characters

Luke Creed has sacrificed everything for his career at the prestigious law firm DeWitt & Blackthorne: a chance to run his family's ranching empire, his marriage, even time with his two daughters. Now, Luke and Amy are divided by forces beyond themselves -- and overcome by an all-consuming desire. But when the case takes a deadly twist, Luke delves into a dangerous web of corruption that may place his life in jeopardy -- and may also target the one woman who loves Luke for who he really is: rebel, cowboy, loner, and lover.

4 out of 5 stars very good, but.............2007-09-08

The writing is great, the story exciting, but Ms. Johnson did not do her research about Texas child support laws. If the couple have joint custady, neither can take the children away from the city where both live. This is a Texas law fact!!

4 out of 5 stars A New Chapter In The Bittercreek Series...A Fresh Take.......2006-05-08

If you are following the saga of the Creed/Blackthorne feud in the Bittercreek series of novels by Joan Johnston, you will find this 4th in the series to be a nice change of pace. In the first three of this saga, "The Cowboy","The Texan", and "The Loner", the focus was on the long lasting hate between the families, and the generation of young lovers that fell for each other ala Romeo and Juliet style, that overcame great odds to be together(with some mystery and danger thrown in the mix to liven things up a bit).

Now, we have come to the story of the youngest of the siblings, Luke Creed. He has been in all the other stories, and now set 12, years after the last one, he is a young hot-shot lawyer, working for an established and prestigious law firm. He is divorced with two young daughters. He is the last of the Creeds to still be seething and bitter over the events of the past that claimed the life of his father. The fact that his mother is now married to his father's worst enemy is not helping matters.

But Luke now has more important matters on his mind. First, his high school sweetheart(finally someone who is not in the enemy camp), is back in town. Luke feels the old feelings, but wants to prove to her that he is not the flake he was back then. Also, and most importantly, his oldest daughter is a diabetic, who is taking a new medicine that is a wonder at keeping her blood sugar in check, but Luke discovers there have been several deaths during the trials. The new enemy is the corporation pushing this drug. They can be lethal and also may have deep connections at his firm. His possible promotion to partner is at stake, but more importantly, so his his daughter's life... he must prove his case, and win the girl! The big question is, can Luke finally put the feud to rest?

I really enjoyed the danger, the twists and turns and the new romance in this one. Miss Johnston makes it a page turner, and sparks new interest and a fresh take in a romance that is finally not as predictable as the others. Also, this one may stand on it's own, as it is not as vital to know the background of the families as the last couple of sequels. Enough info is given to know the score.

Highly enjoyable and recommended to romance/adventure readers and those following the Creed-Blackthorne story....Laurie

3 out of 5 stars Don't start out the series here . . .......2006-02-24

I read this as an unabridged audiobook and early on became a little frustrated. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, this is book whoknowswhich# of a long running series. This means the author throws out tons of characters and refers to past events that left me shaking my tired brain in confusion.

It began good enough. Set in Texas two ex-high school lovers, now in their 30's and divorced w/ kids, reunite at Luke's family farm, sort of. Luke desperately wants to get together with Amy who was the love of his life despite the fact that she dumped him to marry a stable doctor-type. She wants none of it, however even though he's rich, handsome and very sexy. Because he's always been a bit of a rebel she turns him down. He licks his wounds and walks away.

Conveniently enough they meet up again in the next chapter over a legal case (what are the chances, you ask?). The two are lawyers and are on opposite sides of a volatile case involving greedy corporate medicine manufacturing kid killing scum. Hmmm, imagine the odds of that, eh? Anyway, Luke is simply trying to climb the legal ladder and is biding his time working in corporate law when he's handed the case.

The book then turns into a little courtroom/mystery blend that was just interesting enough to hold my attention but in the end everything gets too easily wrapped in a tidy little bow.

3 out of 5 stars could'nt find the story.......2005-06-03

Well, first let me say that i wanted to give it a 2 star but then the writing was not so bad so i gave it 3.i began to read and hoping to feel some romance between those two but could'nt find it ,and what about the story, where is it??????i hope that her other book "the rival'is good cause i read the preview and i liked it.i just bought it and hopefully it'll be a good read (crossing my fingers)

3 out of 5 stars Independent and stubborn .......2005-04-20

A Bitter Creek novel - Attorney Luke Creed's job is to find crooked businessmen. He conducts his job in between rides on his Harley and attempts to woo his high school sweetheart. But Amy is both independent and stubborn and although she is lonely Luke's advances are not welcomed.
