Limited choices.......2007-01-23

Let's face it, there aren't too many textbooks written specifically for surgical technologists. So this is the basic text and it's ok. There's a ton of material and sometimes it's hard to judge which information is the most pertinent and important (you can't memorize the whole thing; you have to be able to find the high points). This was the only text used during the first semester of my program.

For the second semester, the instructor also required Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery. She stated that the surg tech book was still the primary resource, but she thought that Alexander's gave better descriptions of the surgical procedures with the understanding that Alexander's is written for nurses.

So this textbook probably is the standard for surgical technology programs, partly because no one else has written another one.

A great start for the AST........2005-05-28

As a student myself, I found that this book is highly readable, but oftentimes, the text and layout feels cramped as though the editors were attempting to place every single chart, picture, graph, and piece of text on as much square area for each page.

Otherwise, it's been a valuable tool in helping me prepare for the field of Surgical Technology.

I find that the workbook, which was required for my specific program, was often wholely unrelated to the material in the book, which is quite frustrating.

Would this book be sufficient for anyone to learn the profession? Probably not by itself, but it's definitely a beginning.

I actually work in Central Sterile Processing. I found this book very useful with the information of surgical procedures, anotomy charts , surgical instruments. Plus it is very clear on its format, easy to understand and follow. This book will answer many questions that students going for surgical technology need or simple just like me, a person who works with surgical instruments on the daily basis.

I was suprised to find out that there was no question and answers at the end of each chapters, like most of my text books for class. Overall the book was very informative. I was trained by the author John Fischer at the CIA. He is an excellent teacher of the FoH Art. It is truely an art to wait on people and give the guest every thing they could possibly want or need. John is a great and excellent teacher that dove into the realms of the ways and hows and whats to do and when to do it sequences. I got to see him in action behind a bar one afternoon serving up as the bartender that did not show that day. He was knowledgable about wines and bar drinks showing some razzle dazzle! He was "the man" when I had him. Thanks John and for even signing my book...guy

I attended the Culinary Institute of America and was trained by Mr. Fischer. I cannot imagine a single resource that does so much to demistify the key essentials of successful service than this reference. I recommend it to anyone in the industry or interested in the industry. The old standard (the bible until now) for front of the house reference has been remarkable service. An information filled text-book but a remarkably boring and mundane read. Entertaining, Original, Insightful, and Educational this is your one stop reading for front of the house.

The absolute stunning beauty of Adam Raphael's latest work reduces one to such primitive exclaimations as the above.

The photographer has corralled his usual cadre of boys next door and photographed them in various locales of an upscale hotel. Aside from the luxuriousness of the setting, another difference emerges in this collection, the use of nudity. As an artist of unerring taste, though, Raphael presents nothing gratuitous or grotesque. The naked glimpses are of several shapely backsides and nothing more (and nothing more is needed). Raphael trusts the imaginations of his viewers to fill in any erotic gaps.

The book's design is magisterial, the paper luscious, the lighting ethereal.

Adam Raphael has entered the ranks of the masters. And in ROOM SERVICE he has produced not merely a masterpiece but the finest male picture book ever published.

One would be wise to purchase a copy now, as it will no doubt someday be a collector's treasure on the order of Bruce Weber's early books (and of Raphael's own FRIENDS from several years back).

Dear Adam Raphael: I was so impressed by your new Male Photography book "Room Service" I just had to write you right away. I have been reviewing Male Photography books for over eight years now, but this is the first time I felt I actually had to write the photographer. You see, I am a collector, and over the years have had the fortunate luxury of viewing all the new male photography books by all the male photographers that are available, including your last two books.

Well, you have really outdone yourself this time. This new book, showcasing all your new work, is the best by far. To include 150 perfect color images in a beautifully designed book for us to enjoy is awesome. These male models are at the peak of perfection, and so beautifully photographed, with perfect lighting and shadows that they almost seem 3-Dimensional. It is certainly apparent that you are a true admirer of the male torso. Although it may be fashionable in this time period to show totally nudity, it adds to the mystique of these young and handsome models to leave something to the imagination. It is about time that young male models were photographed in settings away from the typical surroundings of old warehouses, and docks, or next to railroad tracks or water. I can just imagine these models looking back 20 years from now at these outstanding photographs and saying "Wow, look at me". And, of course, remembering how well they were treated by you, their caring photographer. What a unique and great idea to feature your models in luxury hotel settings.

This book is a true work of art, not only in the way the models are photographed, but in the books design by Paul Perlow, the unique illustrations by Nina Duran, and the creative consulting of J.C. Suares.

What makes this book great in the end is the contribution of all these creative people, but what makes this book stand out most from all the others is the author's work, in this case the photography. And Mr. Raphael, I think you are an artist in the true sense, making these naturally beautiful young men look there absolute best while sharing with us their natural masculine beauty.

For two years he has traveled to some of the most elegant hotels of the world, accompanied by models, and the resulting spontaneous `studios' he finds offer some of the more sensitive, quiet, private views of these carefully selected young men, completely at ease in the solitude of beauty that mirrors their personal gifts: ROOM SERVICE calls upon us to open the door to an amazingly successful portfolio.

This hefty book speaks of eloquence from the size, the cover, the design (courtesy of J. C. Suarés and Paul Perlow), the unique first few pages that open the door to full page views of handsome men before a colophon or words distract the viewer, and the added subtle art pieces by Nina Duran the quietly remind us of the title - room service delivered. And then once inside the `room' there are page after uninterrupted page of full color photographs of thirty-seven masculine, very handsome men, completely at ease with their sole observer Raphael and his camera. The results are warmly sensuous, beautifully composed images of stunning men, nude and partially clothed, asleep in soft white sheets, fresh from the shower with towel, caught in languid poses in briefs, and at times communicating directly with the photographer (and thus, us) with gazes that take the breath away. Raphael continues to avoid full frontal nudity, finding that the hints of the most private aspects of his models are in the end more erotic.

Adam Raphael is a master of understatement and never more so than in this splendid visual monograph. He capitalizes on fantasy, on textures, light and fabric, and on finding a cadre of some of the most wholesomely handsome men ever collected in a photography art book. His attention to detail makes these fine images seem like personal visual communications from men so at ease with their collaborator that each page is a sensual experience shared as a moment with the viewer. This book is an excellent introduction to various aspects of the many different surgeries and procedures in use, such as anatomy, instrumentation, and OR duties. It also contains a solid introduction to ethics. Overall, a useful book for the budding medical student, or for anyone interested in surgery.

When 28-year-old Selma Schimmel, a medical sociologist, was diagnosed with breast cancer not long after losing her mother to ovarian cancer, she found precious few resources to help her cope. Before the diagnosis, when she could feel a mass in her breast but her doctors weren't at all concerned about it, she demanded further testing. Her doctors mocked her, called her neurotic, said that "statistically, young women don't get breast cancer," but agreed to biopsy "for the hell of it" to prove her wrong. When the biopsy returned positive, she says, "from that point on, I understood the difference between being a passive patient and a proactive medical consumer."

A lumpectomy, radiation therapy, and nine months of chemotherapy followed. She lamented that she had no role models for survival: in addition to losing her mother, her grandmother had died of uterine cancer, and an uncle from a brain tumor. She joined her hospital's cancer support group, but as its youngest member, found "my issues as a young adult with cancer did not resonate in that room." So, while still undergoing treatment, she founded Vital Options, a support group for cancer patients ages 17 to 40.

That was in 1983. During that time, she also started "The Group Room," a call-in radio show that's grown into the world's largest cancer support group. Cancer Talk is an invaluable collection of the voices from the show: cancer survivors, nurses, doctors (much more sensitive than those who biopsied Schimmel, and some who've survived cancer themselves), social workers, and family and friends of cancer patients. They discuss the emotional issues that follow a cancer diagnosis (including difficulties facing one's mortality), how to handle side effects from treatment, and ways to manage the flood of medical bills and problems with insurance companies. Recently diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, I felt very isolated as most women's cancer support groups focus on breast cancer. This book let me know that I was not alone- and that what I was feeling was not only normal, but healthy. It reinforced my belief that positive thought and support are crucial elements to being a survivor. Highly recommended!

This isn't just a book for people who have been touched by cancer, but, for their loved ones as well.

It will get you informed on every aspect of cancer. Help you deal with the emotions of your diagnosis, helps you cope with the physical and sexual issues. Help you to learn your options in your treatment process, and in the legal work place issues and what your insurance will and will not cover; most of all, how important it is to be in a cancer support group. This is a very important book for those who want to be well informed about this illness.

I've yet to deal with this in my family, knock wood, I was sincerely impressed and informed. Very well done.

Having spent almost 4 years in the cancer treatment process with my wife, I highly recommend this book. Its wealth of stories, resources, and insights will be invaluable to anyone who finds themselves trying to understand treatment alternatives and make good decisions for themselves or a loved one. I wish this book had been available to provide guidance and hope to my wife and I. I highly recommend that you buy a copy, use it yourself, or give it to someone who needs it. I happened to be reading "Cancer Talk" just prior to undergoing a biopsy for prostate cancer. The book offered me a special balance of comfort and knowledge from both clinical and personal perspectives. It helped prepare me emotionally for the procedure and the anxiety I felt awaiting the test results. Fortunately the biopsy turned out negative, but reading "Cancer Talk" was a very positive experience. I recommend this book to everyone who needs to understand more about this disease and how it affects patients, survivors, caregivers, friends and family-and I can't think of anyone who would be excluded from this list.

One of the great hidden scandals of our time is the treatment of people with significant disabilities, who are subjected to actions and practices that for any other group would be considered disrespectful, prejudicial, abusive, and a clear violation of fundamental civil and human rights. Yet, the existence of such practices is either ignored, or worse yet, considered acceptable. "Raymond's Room" sheds some much needed light on this issue, and does so in a way that is truly engaging and thought-provoking. Dale DiLeo is to be applauded in his willingness to pull no punches in his critique of the all too often dysfunctional service system, as well as his own self-reflection and self-criticism regarding his role within this system. This book is a call to action for all social justice and human rights advocates, as well as a must read for anyone who considers themselves an advocate for people with disabilities.

I was eager to read this book and was not surprised that it paralleled many of my own experiences in the field. Dale shares valuable experiences and insights that people, whether they're in this field as professionals or not, need to know. I ended up buying a copy of this book for each of the graduate students in my "Disability Systems" course in the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at San Diego State University! This book will definitely go on our reading list for all our students as a "must read" item. Thanks Dale!

Raymond's Room: Right ON.......2007-04-26

Because my career has paralleled Dale DiLeo's, I can testify that he's got it right. Thirty years ago many of us were insprired by leaders in the disability field who provided a vision for change based on a combination of the latest research and the civil rights movement of the 60s. What happened? Progress has been made incrementally, instead of the expected broad shifts in perspective. Federal law has provided direction, but the states have failed to implement the intent of federal legislation. Why? The disability services bureaucracy AKA the DIC (Disability Industrial Complex) has their fingerprints all over it! Thanks, Dale! FREE OUR PEOPLE!

Raymond's Room points out the terrible truth that in so many communities, people with disabilities, served by the most richly funded disability system in the world, remain victimized by the soft bigotry of low expectations. Dale rightly points out it is time to admit we're stuck and start doing business very differently! This should be required reading in all high schools and colleges across the country!
