5 out of 5 stars Be "changed".......2007-08-08

Zach Hunter's youthful writing style brings home a very real and timely point to all. Is does not take "Age" to make a difference in this world, only passion and a committment to see your vision through to the end.

Zach's book speaks to adults as well as teens. So far I have purchased, read and given away three copies of this book, including one to my 12 year old daughter. Every person I have spoken to about this book has been impressed, and many have gone on to buy a copy for themselves and/or their own teenager.

This is a great selection for a teen or adult book study group.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful message for our generation.......2007-06-14

As teen myself, with a heart to challenge my generation to excellence, Zach Hunter is a warmly-welcomed voice of vision, maturity, and biblical truth. His book speaks to his peers right where they are, and inspires them higher.

To the previous reviewer: Zach has demonstrated the ability to work with others to accomplish social good without compromising the convictions that motivate him to act. That is to be commended, not criticized.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept, but too preachy.......2007-06-04

When I first heard of Zach Hunter and sought out this book, I was very impressed by his cause and ambition. That remains unchanged after reading. He truely is a great role model for the up and coming generations. However, I was discouraged to find so much reference to religion, god's plan, and passages of scripture throughout the book. I understand this is where Zach must get his strength and values, however he needs to make it clear that even an athiest can be passionate for social justice. He should just stick to the historical and sociological implications of slavery, rather than try to convince the reader what a "true christian" he is.

5 out of 5 stars Zach is my new hero.......2007-03-16

Never has such a bold message flowed with such simple power. Zach will change your life but more importantly it will change the lives of the hundreds of thousands of slaves living in despair. This is an easy-to-read and easy-to-live message filled with quotes, testimonies, and straight up wisdom from 15year old. Zach is one of my new heroes.

4 out of 5 stars Porpoise Diving Life March Book Review.......2007-03-13

[...]

Staying true to our March 2007 PDL theme ([...]), I think it's safe to say that this young man has laid down his net and is moving headlong into some pretty powerful "follower-ship." Just in case you were wondering, Zach wants to end slavery and human trafficking in his lifetime. He's making a huge difference by creating awareness of a very dire crisis in our world, speaking before thousands of people and simply stepping up to the plate to do his part.

Zach's book is a very engaging and educational read, though it always feels true to the style of a normal 15-year-old. Yes, it's geared toward a younger generation, but the beauty of his writing style is that any normal kid his age (or any adult, for that matter) will see himself/herself as a potential agent of change. Because he's not lofty in his approach, what he's done comes off as doable for the rest of us too.

If you have kids, you'll want to buy this book--if only so that Zach can be an inspiration to them. And maybe in the process, we'll have more kids like him springing up to embrace a hurt world (I think everyone would agree that this would be a good thing). Even if you don't have kids, buy this book and you might be surprised to find his passion is contagious enough for you to change the world, too.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem in a Confused D/S World.......2007-01-10

Is book explains the reality of D/S in a clear start-forward way, and by passes all the fluff; it's not about the sex it's about the experience.

A must read for anyone interested in D/S, it explained the why of problems that I have seen in several D/S relationships (mine and others).

Have I said enough, "GET THIS BOOK" if your interested in having a winning experience as a Dom or a Slave!!!!

5 out of 5 stars So you think you want a slave?.......2003-03-09

There are a lot of "how to" books around on BDSM, which mainly cover areas such as negotiating play, safewords, toys and scenes. There is a dearth of literature on the topic of D/s in a real life relationship. Miss Abernathy has attempted to fill that void with this manual, and has succeeded admirably.

This book is primarily written for dominants who are seeking a slave, although it can equally be read by unowned slaves to gain a focus. (For the record, I am an owned slave and I found the manual to be a very interesting read, as did my Master.) It covers a number of areas that a dominant should consider when choosing a slave, such as: forms of address, general demeanour, the role the slave might fill, as well as things such as signs of ownership, punishment and reward.

In short, the message is: a slave is a dominant's most valuable possession, so think exactly what it is that you want and choose wisely, as the slave's role will reflect on the dominant. In addition, the manual also shows that a large amount of work is required on the part of the dominant to gain and retain a slave.

Miss Abernathy's Concise Slave Training Manual is non-gender specific and as such, can be beneficial to male or female dominants with male or female slaves. Miss Abernathy has done a lot of the hard work in essentially preparing a checklist of things to consider. The volume is slim but is packed with useful information. A valuable addition to any D/s library.

5 out of 5 stars Brief, solid introduction to a developing art.......2002-03-09

Contrary to what you may have heard or read, slave training is actually a new art -- when slavery was legal and socially supported, owners didn't waste tiem training slaves, other slaves did that. This book is really the philosophy part of a set of books written about erotica slavery, or what Miss Abernathy calls "slavehood" in today's so-called kinky community. The book has two parts: "The Training Program" and "D/S Relationships". The basic philosophy is that a training program contains basic standard components but also needs to reflect the individual needs of erotic owners and erotic slaves. Likewise relationships have certain common characteristic but are unique to the couple (or group) involved. It is one of the books I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars Concise Indeed.......2001-02-24

This book is in fact very well written and very concise. However, I was disappointed by it. I came to the book with questions about consensual slavery and the practice thereof that were not answered. Instead, I read a very short and very witty and warm overview of just about everything I already knew--maybe a little less, and I am not all that knowledgeable. Her workbook was more informative, and that is the one that I read first, which helped me form so many of my questions, but the format is not one which will directly answer the questions of an owner, since it is written mainly for the unowned slave.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the next level of play.......2000-12-31

Just as the title suggests, this book is a concise guide on techniques and setting in which to train a slave. Once you have read and practiced the techniques in books such as SM 101 and Screw the Roses, this book is a fantastic collection of ideas for you to set up and negotiate your own S&M relationship. Written in two parts, first the book deals with the various techniques of training your slave - interviews, journals, forms of address, postures, commands, types of services and ornamentation. The book then deals with D/S relationships - what to look for in slaves/Masters, the ethical treatment of slaves and the different types of slave arrangements.

Written in elegant, gracious style which is reminiscent of Emily Post, the tone is very consistent the content of the book, making it even more effective and fun to read. This book is an excellent "mood setter" for two people to read together. Overall, this book is a engaging read and excellent addition to your BDSM library.

5 out of 5 stars Submerge yourself in Roman history!.......2007-10-10

Short of jumping into a time machine and visiting the Roman Empire at the fall of Jerusalem, this is the best method I would suggest for understanding the setting of the New Testament. The "world" that is referred to in Paul's writings is clearly understood for what it was, and the parallels to our lives today are uncanny and alarming. Be warned, however, Rivers graphically, but appropriately shows the Roman Empire for what it was, so this book is not for the faint hearted or young readers. I challenge you to read it and see if you ever think about the Jews, Romans and other Gentiles of the Early Christian Age in the same way ever again.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the faint-hearted.......2007-08-22

It was difficult for me to come up with a rating for this book. It was well-written with a captivating story. The ending left me wanting to know more about the characters and I will probably read the next book in the series just to find out what happens. I am also a fan of Francine Rivers and have loved a number of her other books.

The problem I had with the book was the graphic portrayal of the Roman empire during the time of the story. The author was very open about the society of the times and that meant that there was a lot of violence and sexual innuendo throughout the story. As I generally tend to like authors who do not sugar-coat their stories I was puzzled as to why this bothered me.

I do tend to be very squeamish when it comes to gory violence. The fights of the Roman Empire were quite violent and were vividly portrayed that way. The sexual content also bothered me. There weren't any details but the author gave enough information to leave little to the imagination. This is probably came from the fact that she wrote Romance novels before switching to Christian Fiction. I personally thought it was a little over done.

My favorite character in the book was Julia; the spoiled rich girl who reminded me of Lady Macbeth from Shakespeare. It was her story that kept me reading as I wanted to know more about what was going to happen to her and I wanted to see what other choices she might make. It was the flaws in her character that made her the most interesting to read about.

I tend to read books in the Christian genre when I'm looking for a good story without an overabundance of scenes I would prefer not to read. If this is not why you would pick up this book then it may be the right one for you. I would not recommend this book for young teens or anyone who wants to avoid reading material that has a lot of violence and sex as it is impossible to avoid in this book. When I make my choice in ratings I base it on whether or not I would own or would re-read the book. In this case I would not do either but I can easily see why someone else would answer yes to both of those questions.

In summary, if you are not bothered by violent fight scenes and/or sexual innuendo then you may very well enjoy this book. It was definitely an interesting read and it gave me a greater insight into the Roman Empire. For me, it proved a little too strong for my tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Breath taking.......2007-05-30

From the moment I began reading this novel it simply took my breath away. I just could not stop, and when I had to put it down, I was counting the minutes or hours that I had until I could begin. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars greatest book ever!.......2007-05-20

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!! i just got finished reading the series for the third time and honestly, outside of the Bible, this book has done more to encourage my walk with the Lord than any non-fiction book...its wonderful! francine rivers has been blessed with words to make stories come alive. loved it! you should buy it and read it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-12

5 out of 5 stars Explosive and fulfilling!!!.......2007-02-15

Slave to Love is a no-holds barred, sexual masterpiece penned by the extremely talented, Nikita Black. Detective Michael "Mick" McGraw and Special Investigations Officer, Caroline Palmer, tear up and heat up the pages of this latest hot erotic story that leaves little to the imagination - and it's just how it should be!

Mick aka The Iceman and Caroline go undercover into a secret world that many would never think to even think of. In this world, words like whips, chains, fetishes, bdsm, multiple partners and leather seem the talk of the day. However, Caroline isn't into any of those things and feels out of her depth as she and Mick hunt down a sexual predator who is preying on thirty-something year old couples who walk on the wild side. The more they discover, the more this book heats up--the chemistry and sexuality between Caroline and Mick is off the heat meter!! It's a sweaty and tingling time to be had by all. They both learn a lot about themselves in Slave to Love All I can really say is that Mick McGraw can be the Master whenever he wishes!!! He's smoldering.

The plot flows smoothly, is chalk full of adrenaline and gripping, Slave to Love is breathtaking, seductive and a pure pleasure to read. The build up and tension throughout ever page is fulfilling and satisfying in its conclusion.

Nikita Black should be labeled the Queen of Steam. Slave to Love is highly recommended (though shouldn't be read in public *g*) and should be enjoyed over and over again. I look forward to the next Nikita Black explosion!

Restraint is sexy. It can be a simple leather strap, a shiny pair of handcuffs, a delicate silk scarf, or a dominant’s stern gaze. The yearning for a partner who will take control can grip one as powerfully as the most intricate, indecipherable rope knot. In Slave to Love, Alison Tyler gathers the most popular — and often most taboo — fantasies of sexual control and erotic restraint. Featuring such popular erotica writers as Thomas Roche, Saskia Walker, and Rachel Kramer Bussel, Slave to Love is luscious, naughty, and infinitely sexy.

5 out of 5 stars The price of love.......2006-05-08

FORBIDDEN FRUIT: Love Stories from the Underground Railroad by Betty DeRamus is an earth-shaking book of short stories about what African Americans were willing to do to keep their loved ones in their lives. In "The Special Delivery Package," a female slave, Lear Green, was willing to have herself shipped in a sailor's chest to the north to meet her husband-to-be. With no food, water and scant air, she traveled 18 hours to Philadelphia. James Smith, "A Love Worth Waiting For," was beaten bloody on several occasions as he attempted to escape to the wife he'd been sold away from. A black overseer heard him praying for him and the white men who abused him and was so moved that he unchained Smith so that he could finally successfully escape. Isaac Berry, of "Hound Dogs Hate Red Pepper," put red pepper in his shoes to throw the dogs off his scent as he rushed toward the north. There were many people, including those of the Underground Railroad, who helped him in his escape. The Underground Railroad, operating at the peril of the conductors, rushed slaves seeking freedom across the US border into Canada because the Fugitive Slave laws frequently made it dangerous, if not impossible, for them to find peace even in the northern United States.

All of the stories were heart wrenching and it made you wonder if you would have the strength, the persistence, the nerve, that these early Africans had to pursue love at any cost. The tales also brought to the forefront the tragedies that our ancestors survived daily: beatings, being sold from family and friends, early death from abuse, starvation and terror. Ms. DeRamus brings the stories of these brave people alive and puts it in your face where you can't hide. She awakens the sleeping and lost history of the brave people of Africa and what it took for them to survive. It is an excellent read, smooth and enticing, bringing forth not only the history, but the bravery of the displaced Africans of yesteryear. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand what slavery was really all about.

I was hooked on this one when I picked it up. I was just going to read a paragraph or two to see how it reads. The next thing I knew the phone was ringing, and when I answered the phone, I realized that I had been reading for a couple of hours. I had to control my urges to pick up the book when I had appointments or other things I needed to do first. It is a really interesting read. And it reads well also.

5 out of 5 stars Adds a Human Dimension to Slavery.......2005-03-03

These are stories of hope that take place in the midst of one of the most terrible times in American history. When some people thought that they could own others based just on skin color, other people lived and even loved.

These stories are based on the tales passed down by descendants, unpublished memoirs, Civil War records, books, magazines and dozens of previously untapped sources. They add an entirely new dimension to what life must have been like in the pre-war South.

More than anything else these stories help you to relate to the people, they add character to the bare statistics. It adds a very human dimension to the people who through no fault of their own were slaves. These people knew love, had feelings, were not just the animals they were considered by their owners.

    4 out of 5 stars wonderful book.......2005-02-12

Forbiden Fruit is one of the best history books I've seen in a long time. It tells a largely ignored story and reminds the reader that the slaves were human beings, not symbols and that they weren't passively waiting to be saved. This book is filled with men and women who risked everything for the freedom to be with their beloved.

    Book Description

It is no act of love that Regan experiences the night she takes her sister's place in the marriage bed, a counterfeit bride to sate the lust of her twin's new husband. Come morning, her sister, carrying another man's child, resumes her place and Regan is spirited away to a nunnery.
But a more exotic fate awaits the fiery Celtic beauty: Regan is sold to a slave trader. It will be her destiny to come under the tutelage of Karim al Malina, master of the erotic arts, who will mold Regan -- now renamed Zaynab, the beautiful one -- into a Love Slave fit for a Moorish king, though the pair break the first rule of teacher and pupil . . . they fall in love.
But Zaynab is not Karim's to keep. She is given to the Caliph of Cordoba, who vows to love her . . . and pleasure her as no younger man can. Yet Regan still longs for her one true love, Karim al Malina, and vows that, somehow, their fates must be reunited . . . .

    4 out of 5 stars Hot.......2007-07-25

Despite the shocking rape scenes in the novel, it is quite a very good read. I just skip along the sex and continue reading as the plot thickens. Zaynab is quite a formidable young woman and despite the attempts on her life she lives out of love for her teacher and lover.

4 out of 5 stars Bertrice is always good .......2005-09-13

It is true, to me her books are always good but be forewarned this one like many of her books has its shocking scenes- this was one of the rare times where I was actually more into the beginning half of the book than the second!

The only thing I would really like to have seen/ known is what happened to her twin in the end- how it all worked out. That and a little payback to the nun!

For those of you that love the bread and butter one man- one woman forever romances, you will probably not like this book!

5 out of 5 stars Good fantasy, but a romanticised view of a world problem.......2005-07-31

Sexual slavery is a worldwide problem, even today in the 21st century, with hundreds of thousands of women and children subjected to this horror every year. It has been around for thousands of years and is not a problem to be taken lightly.

In Bertrice Small's The Love Slave, the author paints a picture of a woman whose life was so horrible, and whose slavery was so romantic that it is preferable to her original life. Set in the mid-tenth century, Regan is a Scottish girl whose family has been murdered by a neighboring clan. She is carried off by a Norse slaver to be sold in the slave markets of Dublin. Her outstanding beauty catches the attention of a Dublin trader who buys her as a present for the caliph of Cordoba. He must owe the caliph big time because, he not only fills a ship with goods, he also hires Karim the ship's owner, who is a Master at training love slaves, to train Regan to please the caliph.

In addition to this book being in the Historical Romance genre, it is for mature audiences. The author describes in detail the sexual behavior of her characters. She has also done enough research to create historically accurate settings and characters. The caliph of Cordoba is based on the real Abd ar-Rahman III (891-961), the greatest and the most successful of the princes of his dynasty in Spain. He is accused of having sunk in his later years into the self-indulgent habits of the harem. Which is where we find him with Regan, whose name has been changed to Zaynab, "the beautiful one."

Of course, Zaynab and Karim had fallen deeply into eternal love during her training. Their parting in Cordoba breaks both their hearts and the reader spends the rest of the book wondering if they can ever be reunited. If you can stand the sexual heat, this is a great example of historical romance.

The last words of the caliph Abd ar-Rahman III are said to have been "I have known only fourteen happy days in my life." After reading The Love Slave, you will have a good idea how those days were spent.

3 out of 5 stars the love slave...more erotica for women.......2005-06-01

the love slave is another erotic work by the devine ms. small. once again she doesn't just tease and tantalize.... she delivers a hot and spicy erotic novel that will keep the pages turning. not as satisfying as "hellion" but still packs a punch.the sex sizzles but may be a little strong for those of you who don't like rape scenes, sex toys,or numerous sex partners for the "heroine". the one scene with karim's sister servicing multiple men in a tent was a little hard to take also.
however, the biggest problem i have with this book, is it was written pre- september 11th.back when being abducted by a sheik and carried off into the desert was favorite fodder for all of us romance buffs. i don't know about you, but my enjoyment of reading romances with arab hero's and harems (remember "captive bride" by joanna lindsey? or "valentina" by fern michaels?)came down with the twin towers.i know it isn't really fair, but somehow being abducted and carried off to the middle east as a captive or "love slave" has lost it's romantic appeal.now all it does is remind me of the way things have changed for us all and the huge gulf that divides us.
anyway, back to my review...... i'm glad that i first read this books years ago, and that the storyline and hot sex is strong enough to keep it in my collection of favorite erotica.

4 out of 5 stars Frustrating, emotional and sensual!.......2005-02-16

The frustrating part for me was that Zaynab appeared to truly fall in love with Karim the Passion Master. After knowing no love at all in the first 15 years of her life Karim comes into her world and sweeps her away with such a depth of passion that it sizzles right off the page. I realize that they both had their honor and had to do what was expected of them. She had to leave Karim for the Caliph - HOWEVER it seemed that Zaynab dealt with this much better and easier than Karim did. She too easily accepted the love and world of the Caliph and this was frustrating. It seemed Karim was much less adapting to a world without his Zaynab. The emotional story of Zaynab and Karim was beautiful and so very sensual - I loved them together! What was even more upsetting for me was when the Caliph gave her to his assistant (can't remember his name) and Zaynab felt the need to be a true love slave to him - he was even a virgin so she had lots to teach him. Since she supposedly still loved Karim this was a little hard for me to understand. I guess she took her role as she was trained for very seriously. Yes, I did believe that she truly loved Karim and finally when she looses her child and totally breaks down and realizes she has nothing she appears to finally be a real person and not just this love machine. The part with Karim and the devastation of his entire family was really really sad. There was something truly wonderful about his family and to realize this wonderful sensuous man lost so very much really upset me. The reuniting of Karim and Zaynab was wonderful but it should have gone on for much longer - we could have used one more terrific LOVE scene between this couple at the end when they are finally a true couple at last!

    5 out of 5 stars Painfully honest..........2003-02-15

As an Old Guard submissive, I was amazed by Vi Johnson's diary. I, too, am expected to keep a journal but the depth of mine does not compare to hers. Expectations differ by Dominant. While my Dominant does not expect me to construct a dungeon in Her home and would absolutely kill me if I were to turn to drugs, She does expect me to change in the ways She considers to be growth. This isn't easy but, after reading this book, I now appreciate how much my Dominant cares. I highly recommend this book to any submissive who thinks there's more to BDSM but doesn't know where to look.

1 out of 5 stars Thumbs Down for Literacy.......2002-11-14

I couldn't even get through this book, it is sooooo poorly written...if you care the least about words, grammar, sytax, details, and compelling story, this so is not the book for you...

5 out of 5 stars Be glad it isn't your past.......2002-08-08

I have many people who go on and on about the "good old days" of SM -- frankly I think their romantic notions need a bit of checking and this diary does it. It is a bit difficult to follow because it is in diary form. You will be shocked, you will be frightened, and you may be turned-off especially if you came into BDSM in the 1990s when SSC because was pretty standard. Because it is a diary, because it attempts to look at Johnson's life, there is little reflection or questioning of the events and people protrayed though there are entries where such analysis does appear it is still from within the mindset of an "old guard slave". For people who "pine for the good old days" this can be a reality check but it may not have been the average reality for every person in the SM lifestyle in the 1970s and 1980s.

2 out of 5 stars Not Quite an Icon.......2002-07-04

Overall an adequate book and does describe a woman who is following her dream. A bit difficult to read and follow but, then again, all Diaries (except The Diary of Anne Frank) are difficult to follow unless one was the one who lived that particular life. Could serve as material for another book perhaps? Too many questions arise such as why are there no pictures of the main characters such as Queen Cougar and Mistress Jill Carter? Readers should know shouldn't they especially when there IS a photo of Viola Johnson? Another question arises is why doesn't the author, Viola Johnson, comment more (either pro or con) on the use of drugs in her "family" and why doesn't the author comment on the presence of the production of Pornography that her "family" seems to need to support itself? As an African-American woman, how could she justify to African-Americans and African-American women in particular that she IS a slave? There are more questions that arise that are left unaddressed in this diary -- no Prologue, no appendices, no references, no dedication, etc exist to explain anything. More could have been done to help make the events in this book make much more sense or even to convey appropriate messages to younger generations than what was accomplished here. This book is okay and accurate from the Old Guard perspective, but fails to lift Ms. Johnson to an Icon status where many now place her.

    5 out of 5 stars No, it isn't pretty..........2002-02-05

... but it is brutally real.
If you are looking for fantasy fodder, look elsewhere. This is reality, raw and unpolished.
Vi is one of the Mothers of the modern BDSM scene. She put her life out there so that others could learn from her mistakes. Anyone who ever thought it would be a good idea to sign their life completely over to someone should be made to read this book before they continue along that path. As the saying goes - Be careful what you wish for.
This book is an emotional roller coaster. When Mother Vi writes about her mother I was moved to tears. I felt angry for her when she was "forgotten" by her owners. The thing that drove me to turn the page was the realization that this is as real as it gets. This happened.
If you've been in the scene long enough, some of the players will sound familiar. This just adds to the weight of its truthfulness. And although there are always several versions of the truth, rarely will you ever find someone with the guts to tell their version of it with such frank honesty.
Mother Vi lays it all on the line so that we may learn and grow. To that I say "Thank You."

5 out of 5 stars Fed My Reading Sweet Tooth!.......2007-08-15

If the book's calling out from the shelf every time you go to the dang store--pick it up! This is what I told myself after reading Lord of Temptation because for over a year I was tempted to buy Ms. Quinn's books. Guess my head was on cloud zero. This book gave me the warm fuzzies, the kind usually only a nice long bubble bath and some good chocolate can. Needless to say, I've already gone back to it for a second helping.

England, 1071. Dante Risande, Norman lord and lover extraordinaire, is in search of members of a Saxon resistance, who work to thwart King William's hold on England. While visiting Saxon noble Bryce Dermott's estate in Devonshire, he meets the lovely and enigmatic Gianelle, a servant. Not even the noble ladies present can turn his head, and Dante is determined to make the jaded woman his. When Dermott meets his maker, his brother seizes his chance to make Gianelle suffer, as he's always wanted her too. All but charged with her master's death, Dante steps in to protect her till a proper inquiry can begin. When he takes Gianelle and her best friend to his home, he begins and all out wooing of Gianelle and it's not long till both of them feel the unrestrained passion that has haunted them since their first meeting. Meanwhile, Dante must figure out if she can really be trusted all while carrying out the orders of his King. Keeping Gianelle safe is no easy task either. Not everything is as it appears and they'll have to wade through treachery, deceit and heartbreak before dreaming of happiness.

This is the kind of book that makes me want to reread it--immediately. Not only did I laugh my butt off at Gianelle's extra dry roasted sense of humor, I felt swept off my feet many times throughout. Dante Risande: great name, phenomenal hero material. He's haunted by the loss of a loved one, hounded by the resistance of a beautiful woman and he doesn't take crap from his enemies. Sexy doesn't begin to describe this proud, fierce and noble man. Gianelle was a fresh breeze of wit, poise and intelligence. She's got som major hang-ups due to family as well and when she slipped into her devious, child-like means of retribution, I was floored with laughter as well as sympathy for her. By no means is she a wilting willow though, quite the opposite. Never having been able to trust in men, her melting to Dante was one of the sweetest, and hottest, scenarios I've read in a while. The writing is so smooth, flowing wonderfully from one scene to the next with a good, solid pace that never left me wanting to put the book down. In fact, I couldn't and read it in about five hours. So, not the most complicated of storylines, but with a timeless, beautiful love story that more than filled my "ahhhh, giggle, sigh, sniffle, ahhhh" quota for the month. It seems as if it's part of a series, but in typical me fashion, I'm all out of order, but not out of sorts as a result--I reads just fine on its own though I'm reading her others as soon as possible. Wonderful book. Top ten keeper shelf material right here.

    2 out of 5 stars Lacked depth.......2007-05-02

It is a charming fantasy, to be redeemed from slavery by a handsome hero, who takes you to his castle, gives you a beautiful room, and fine clothes, then falls in love with you and marries you.

But for me, this story didn't ring true. Would a slave use lines like "You would rather have an eyelash-batting mindless twit in your lap than a woman who might challenge your precious ego"? Okay, it's a nice saucy line. But it just doesn't fit with the "abused slave" character. It was confusing that Gianelle's personality did not seem to match her background. She was too sophisticated, and to playful to be a slave. Her endless pranks were unlikely, and her redemption was too simple. For all her mistreatment, she didn't suffer.

Dante's character also seemed incomplete. There was no struggling with class distinctions, or marrying according to the will of the king, or for political or financial advantage. Or I should say, overcoming objections to marriage based on those concerns. It was too simple. See a girl, fall in love, get married.

I found the writing to be emotionally hollow, and skimmed over the second half of it.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Romance - with great twists...........2007-03-12

Lord of Temptation by Paula Quinn is a romance novel based around England in 1071. Gianelle is a slave with lots of strong will. Gianelle is atempting to escape when Lord Dante spoils her escape. This book has mystery, evil men , romance and interesting historical storyline. Off to read more by this author.

5 out of 5 stars Lord of Temptation.......2006-07-31

I finished reading Lord of Temptation last night and absolutely loved the book. Gia and Dante were fabulous. Totally believable characters that just grabbed your interest and held on to it the whole book.

I loved that Gia's characteristics and personality evolved in a believable way! You could feel her distrust of people in the beginning and the slow thaw when she found that people she met were genuinely good and happy. Those introductions to people who were happy with their lives gave her the canvas that she needed to relax her guard and let her soul emerge. She had so many personality traits that I loved, even when being so distrustful of the world. She was brave and stayed true to her friend. I loved her sense of humor!!! She also had a huge amount of love all bottled up inside of her and you gave her the perfect setting for that to come out and for her to become the person that she was meant to be.

As for Dante: A reformed rake who became able to focus and love only one deserving woman. Dante had such compassion and understanding of who she was even while lusting after her ~ and then his heart started to open up and let her in. He was tender - giving - unselfish - and totally HOT ....

Paula, I cannot wait to read more. As a total addict to Lynn Kurland I can honestly say that you are now rated right up there on the top shelf !!! I LOVED this book and look forward to reading more in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Love sets her free in more ways than one -Excellent Period Romance!.......2006-07-07

Wow! I wasn't sure that Quinn could top the prequel Lord of Desire, but was I wrong! Lord of Temptation is excellent! Norman Lord Dante Risande rescues and buys slave/servant Gianelle, who is a murder suspect. He then brings her back to his home where he sets her free. Dante is extremely attracted and drawn to Gianelle, who resists not wanting to be one of his 'women'. The love story is excellent, along with plenty of action (murder/revenge) and some humor. LOD characters Brand and Brynna make appearances too. A very satisfying read.

    Book Description

Chariton's Callirhoe, subtitled "Love Story in Syracuse," is the oldest extant novel. It is a fast-paced historical romance with ageless charm.

Chariton narrates the adventures of an exceptionally beautiful young bride named Callirhoe, beginning with her abduction by pirates--adventures that take her as far as the court of the Persian king Artaxerxes and involve shipwrecks, several ardent suitors, an embarrassing pregnancy, the hazards of war, and a happy ending. Animated dialogue captures dramatic situations, and the novelist takes us on picturesque travels. His skill makes us enthralled spectators of plots and counterplots, at trials and a crucifixion, inside a harem, among the admiring crowd at weddings, and at battles on land and sea.

This enchanting tale is here made available for the first time in an English translation facing the Greek text. In his Introduction G. P. Goold establishes the book's date in the first century CE and relates it to other ancient fiction.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Love in the second century........2002-11-12

This lively and fluently written story contains all the ingredients of a modern bookstall love story: jealousy, apparent death, kidnapping, war, slavery, assault on chastity and ultimately ... true love and a happy marriage.

Callirhoe: My damned beauty is the cause of my misfortune.

Like most of the theatre plays in the Ancient World, novels like this one were an evasion out of the difficult and dangerous living conditions. It is clear that kidnapped beautiful girls didn't have the same ultimate fortune of Callirhoe.
New here is that her jealous husband is the cause of her misfortune, whereas normally it are the parents or another member of the family.
This book is still a worth-while read and gives a good picture of the living conditions at that time. The psychology is more than just a black and white portrait.
