This needs 10 stars.......2007-01-06
Madeline Baker can write Native American romance better than anyone I
have ever read, because to her the story and the Indian hero are more
important than the sex. Hope to see a lot more from her.
A FOUR PLUS STAR - RECOMMENDED.......2006-08-27
Yuma Prison - Arizona Territory.
What a nasty Hell hole.
How does one survive the brutish mentality of the guards, especially when you know that you are not guilty of the crime for which you are incarcerated?
Four and a half years have led Nathan Chasing Elk to the point of trying to excape one last time. He has to find his daughter, he has not heard of her in almost 3 years.
Catherine Lyons is struggling to protect herself from Marteen the Apache who wants her for his woman while waiting for her brother, Mark to return. Well she has had it. She decides to strike out for Finley's Crossing and head east.
Marteen seems to bring Chasing Elk and Catherine together.
Catherine takes Nathan back to her ranch house. As time passes they are both under survalience by the Apaches and decide it is time to move out.
Chasing Elk can't leave Catherine behind as she seems to fascinate him. We get to follow them on a dirty, dusty trek across the Territory in search of Leah, Nathan's daughter.
Oh, oh Marteen is back.
Then a broken leg holds them up until there is danger of Nathan being recognized. There is another long trek to the Dakotas in search of Nathan's mother and her People.
This leads to a very important education for Cate and Leah when they finally find and make a summer home [after marriage]with Macawi and her family. Ah, but there is one more desperate rescue that Nathan must perform with the help of his step-father.
But, oh boy, Nathan finds out that Jim Buckner is in the vicinity and he decides to wreak his vengence on the man. Even bringing him in to the sheriff does not stop the miscarriage of justice once again. Will Nathan ever get to see Catherine and Leah again?
DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED [hey, no premarital sex and the story is still great.]
I loved it!.......2006-07-23
I couldn't put this book down. It is the first Madeline Baker book I have read, but it won't be the last. I really liked the way she tied in geographic history with a very exciting plot and a very sensual love story. I really appreciated that the characters had high morals and showed that you can have desires and control them until the proper time!! and find REAL love.
tense Indian romance .......2006-01-03
It has been four years six months and counting since Jim Buckner arranged for Chasing Elk to be sent to Yuma Prison, a hell hole of abuse from the likes of guard Fat Tom. Only revenge and seeing his daughter Leah keeps Chasing Elk going. When an opportunity arrives to escape, he takes it, but is severely injured in the process.
With her parents recently dead and Apache Marteen wanting rancher Catharine Lyons as his woman, she so far she has refused him using the excuse that her man is coming for her though she knows she will not have much time left to say no. She either must return to Boston or he will take her as her brother Mark is no protection. When a near dead Chasing Elk reaches her ranch at about the same time as Marteen and his retinue of braves, she claims he is her husband. The stranger agrees. As Catharine nurses Chasing Elk back to physical health and he begins to work the ranch, an attraction between them arises. However, Marten wants him dead; the law wants him in prison; Chasing Elk wants his daughter; Catharine wants his love. However, first his mind must heal if he lives long enough.
DAKOTA DREAMS is a tense Indian romance starring a courageous heroine and a battered male with demons screaming at him to avenge the death of his wife and to bring his daughter home, which he wants to believe, is at Catharine's ranch. The character driven tale is loaded with plenty of action as the key players will converge in a showdown. Though the support cast seems somewhat one dimensional, Madeline Baker's latest nineteenth century star-crossed romance contains a fresh fun story line.

Book 3 of RETURN TO RED RIVER by bestselling author Lauraine Snelling. Thorliff's goal of becoming a writer is within reach. Working for a newspaper in Northfield, Minnesota, he is busy writing articles and stories for the Minneapolis Tribune and Harper's Magazine. But his idyllic world comes to a sudden halt when an epidemic hits the town of Blessing, North Dakota, following the Red River flood of 1897. Thorliff returns home to help family and friends recover from the aftermath of the disasters and rebuild their town. A captivating and heartwarming tale of aspiration, struggle, love, and triumph.

excellent ending!.......2006-01-07
The best part of this story moves along faster in this book than the first 2 in this series, but not so fast that you're left wondering what happened. Thorliff continues to work for Elizabeth's father at the newspaper as Elizabeth goes to medical school, and when tragedy strikes Blessing, Thorliff goes home to help and eventually convinces Elizabeth to come when a doctor is needed desparately.
I noticed a couple of earlier reviews disliked the idea of Elizabeth and Thorliff being a couple, but it wasn't unexpected - the story in Book 1 allows readers to get to know Elizabeth pretty well before she ever lays eyes on Thorliff, so it's obvious she was introduced to us for a reason. I'm sorry things didn't go well with Anji, but at least Thorliff was spared from being in a "love triangle" with both women.
My only complaint about this book is that there isn't a 4th in the series - I would love to see Thorliff start a newspaper while Elizabeth sets up a medical practice in Blessing. (Of course one can imagine their own ending but I hate loose ends in a story)
Wonderful Book - Made me cry.......2003-04-07
This is a fabulous ending to the triology on Thorliff. Although I might have been rooting for another ending (Anji, why'd you marry that other guy!) this one still won me over. The book made me cry, laugh and share it with all my friends! I can't wait to go back to Blessing later, I have completely fallen in love with all the characters.

Must he choose between the two? Elizabeth Rogers has been raised in a life of privilege, yet she has an unwavering determination to become a doctor. Though she has the blessing of her family, society is not as kind, for it is nearly impossible for a woman to enter medical school. Has she misread her heart?

I liked this book........2004-07-29
A DREAM TO FOLLOW opens in the year 1893. Thorliff Bjorklund, 17, lives with his family in Blessing, North Dakota. Thorliff has been writing stories since he was a little boy and longs to study journalism. Everybody likes his writing, but his stepfather doesn't want Thorliff to go to college. He wants him to stay home and take care of the family and farm.
Thorliff is stymied, caught between his family and his desires, and he has no idea what to do. He also struggles spiritually; Thorliff doesn't have faith that God will make things right for him and his family. If that isn't bad enough, a long drought means there might not be enough money for his tuition. Thorliff has to make a very difficult decision about his life. Will he go to college and follow his lifelong dream or go with his father's wishes?
In another part of the story, Elizabeth Rogers lives in Blessfield, Minnesota. She comes from a very good family and is determined to reach her goal of becoming a doctor. Her family encourages her to follow her dream, but it's nearly impossible for a woman to get into medical school. Does her heart mislead her to think otherwise about becoming a doctor?
I liked this book because it inspired me to think about what I want to be when I grow up. When I grow up, I want to be a prosecuting attorney because I think it would be fun, and you wouldn't get bored at all because you deal with different types of cases. Maybe when you read A DREAM TO FOLLOW, it will make you think about what you want to be when you grow up, too!

Sweet........2003-02-27
This book is very sweet and makes you think. It is different than what I usually read as far as romancs go, but very good and well-written. For different reasons I liked it as much as my top reads of late--Fantasy Lover by Kenyon and Anything, My Love by Cynthia Simmons. Sweet, fun stories you don't want to put down.
A Dream To Folow.......2002-09-27
This was a very good book, a great way to continue on the Red River series. It was very easy reading. I had a hard time putting it down and wanted to know if Thorliff would ever be allowed to attend college. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Easy Reading!.......2002-02-21
Searching for God's plan for your life is an integral part of maturing now as it was for the teens in Lauraine Snelling's A Dream to Follow. Norwegian immigrant, Thorliff Bjorklund yearns for college and a writing career, yet his father sees a more practical future for his son. His father's dream is for Thorliff to take over the family farm.
Elizabeth Rogers has always wanted to be a doctor. But before the turn of the 20th century, woman doctors were not accepted. Elizabeth is determined and knows this is the path she is to take, but why so many obstacles?
Snelling alternates between the comfortable rural family life of Thor and Elizabeth's more sophisticated upper class atmosphere with ease. We are given many insights into Minnesota farm living and rural life as well as the life of a family in a more urban setting in the late 1800's. Snelling's writing is very simplistic and although she may not have intentionally aimed it at young adults, it would certainly appeal to teens who are searching for God's plan for their life.
This book displays how God's will for our lives may not be as clear cut as we would hope and that we must continually seek him and have faith in His plan.

Wonderful Continuation!.......2001-10-19
I loved this next books about all the wonderful characters of Blessing. I was so excited to be able to read more about the characters and can't wait for the next one to come out. One of the major scenes towards the end of the book was definitely a tear jerker though. I was thrilled with most of the developments, but I would have liked to at least hear from the characters from Blessing in Disguise and hear how Augusta was getting on in South Dakota.

A great inspirational story.......2003-04-08
While the Blessing series is the dearest to my heart, this is still a wonderful collection of stories. The characters are real and bring life to the stories of the settlers to this area of the country. A definite need to read!
Very good!.......2001-08-29
While other reviewers mentioned the female main characters, I enjoyed other characters whose lives were changed by the influence of these women. In the first book, Carl was very bitter about his first wife's death when he married Nora just so she could take care of his children. It wasn't until the end of the book that he realized he had been wrong and asked for God's forgiveness. In the second book, Nora's sister Clara becomes a live-in companion to Mrs. Norgaard, who has lost interest in life since her husband died. Mrs. Norgaard is much happier with Clara in the house, and together they help the local blacksmith, Dag, who has been persecuted by his younger brother Jude since childhood and as a result feels he isn't a worthwhile person. The third book is about Jude; he accidently kills his wife and mother, then drifts to where a schoolhouse is being rebuilt, and he meets and falls in love with the schoolteacher, and is ready to ask forgiveness from the Lord, his brother, and others he has hurt along the way. The fourth book is about a young girl whose father is the local pastor, and her experiences while waiting for a young man called to fight in Germany. Sometimes the character's stubbornness makes you want to scream at them, but everything works out in the end.
One of continuing faith in God.......2000-12-21
Four different journeys of leaning on God. From leaving a home you have know your whole life and a family that loves you to head across the ocean to fullfill your hopes and dreams of the new world. Having a strong will and faith when life's journey becomes difficult.
great format.......1999-02-16
The story of four Norweigan women, two that have just come over and two that were raised in Dakota territory. Each finds love in a surprising yet different way. I really enjoyed the format of 4 short stories as opposed to one long one. I've read some books recently that seemed to drag on. This did not. They tie in together nicely and the endings were sometimes very surprising. I really liked the book. All four stories were believable and the women in them, inspiring.

Shuffled from one foster home to another--and from one institution to the next--for most of his life, Floyd Rayfield is darn tired of traveling without a real destination. Floyd firmly believes that he will find his real home if he becomes a Sioux Indian. Determination, faith, and a lot of crazy luck help Floyd make the journey to the Sioux reservation and embark on the sort of vision quest on which only Native Americans are allowed. This is a touching, deeply-layered exploration of identity and belonging. Warriors come from the strangest places . . .

Destiny to its Highest .......2005-11-22
This book is about a sixteen year old boy who wants to become a Native American. He would wear moccasins to school, had a Dakota pipe, would grow his hair long and die it black, he would also try to make his skin darker. Charley Black Crow was his Native American name and would sometimes sign his papers with that name. Floyd believed it was his destiny to become a Dakota Native American. He had a dream which showed him as a warrior. Floyd put it to heart after his dream to become a Native American.
Dakota Dream was not an exciting book. There were no parts where you just couldn't set the book down. It was very boring. The same tone was used throughout the whole story. Native American ways were used throughout the book, and I did learn a little. You also learn how life was in a foster home.
If you know your destiny this is a book for you. It will help you on the way to find your destiny. This book shows what one boy did for his. Now what will you do for yours?
Floyd's Story.......2005-03-02
This story is about a boy who is searching for his dream to become a Dakota Indian. One night he has a realistic dream that he is an Indian fighting one of the battles with the Indians against the colonists. He wants to get to an Indian reservation where hopefully he can fulfill his dream as an Indian but he has no way of getting there until he meets a boy with a broken down motorcycle and he tries to fix it and then in the night he rides it to the reservation so he can become an Indian and fulfill his dreams.
Dakota Dreams.......2003-02-25
This is a really good book. It's about a boy called Floyd. When he was young he decided he wanted to be an indian. He lives in foster homes and is always moving. This book even has some useful information in it about indians. I would recommend this book to someone who likes adventures and mischief; it's a good book.
In the book Floyd decides early on he wants to become an indian. He learns lots about them and even follows their religion. He lives in foster homes and is always moving. He is never in the same school long so he doesn't have any friends. He is starting to get sick of everything so he decides it's time to run away. He plans it all out and the leaves. The rest of the book is pretty much about what he does there.
I liked this book because it was kind of an adventure. It went lots of different ways. It went from being in one place, then going to a completely different place. It even had some useful information about indians. It's a really good book.
I think you should read this book. It's a good book for all different people. I rated this book 4 stars. This is a great book and is filled with lots of mischief and excitement.
"Indian Day".......2001-03-20
In "Dakota Dream" a young boy runs away from a group home to fullfill his dream about being a Dakota Indian and living on an real reservation. Personally I like this book a lot because I think it would be cool to be a Dakota Indian. The boy one night in in a vision in his dream, he sees himself as a Dakota Indian riding on horseback to go fight the settlers. Thats when it first comes to him, that his destiny is to become a Dakota Indian. He fights his way through life going from group home to group home, not even considering the fact that his parents died when he was a baby, and never saw them before. I think "Dakota Dream" is an exciting, and one of the best books I have ever read!
if you have to read this for school, you have my sympathy.......2000-05-08
My junior high age son and his friends had to read this book for school, and they were thoroughly annoyed with the self-obsessed protagonist, Floyd. They wanted him to grow up, already! I read the book to see what all the complaining was about and found myself agreeing.
The "adults" in the book humored Floyd too much; The only person who cared enough to make him grow up was the Sioux Indian Chief. One hopes that Floyd would learn something lasting from the one mature character in the book. Pick up Harry Potter or a Redwall book instead.

Book Description
No ordinary door, this opens to the language of TreeSpeak, in the dialect of DogNose. Follow the silent sound. The Noses know. They fence the wind's four quarters, engrave our secrets as their very own treasure, and they know who the boogie man is.
Go ahead...give your mourning eyes a good stretch...see? Birds are not random! They fly in ovation for each reincarnation from the highlands of curious places.
Here, magic gadgets are not inanimate: they are sad when they're left alone, happiest when they're not broken, and when they are old, they give comfort.
This door opens to travel journals, poetry and vignettes. This is the rite of passage of a Norwegian/American child born at the tail-end of a long line of funny uncles and prairie widows.
Travel to a 19th century farm in Telemark. Ride the train with three wide-eyed girls through Europe. Experience 18 earth-years as an unsettled cat. Join the fellowship of livestock and the faith that tastes like soil. Hitch your dreams to the breezes of eagles. Scramble up slippery rainbows and around riddling rocks. Follow a mossy trail to the mouth of a dragon, and let the red light of Mars guide your way home.
The author states: "A peaceful little farm in North Dakota was the sanctuary where imagination took its first spin around my head. My world of adventure was the winding creek, the ash tree jungle, wildlife, barn pets, Mom's spooky attic and the great graveyard of flying farm machines. Mom told me to exercise my God-given skills. Dad inspired me, by loving nature and family more than anything. On this little farm, the heartbeat of nature accompanied every day. This is the root of my smile; this is the place I visit at night when I dream."

Few artists have been affected more deeply and left less scared by their pain than this modern force of poetic nature.
A rare gem.......2007-02-08
Beaver Creek Blues is a refreshing work of art. Kleven-Jensen has a profound gift for beautiful, rich, spine-tingling prose, and she uses it to weave a delightful tapestry of essays and poems about genuine life on the prairie and beyond. Her eye for small details brings her poignant short stories to life, sometimes mournful and sometimes joyful in the same page. The works are original, void of cliché'. Some of her phrases are stunning; you feel compelled to read them over and over, like a fine bouquet of wine lingering on your palate. Her writing is nicely complemented by relevant and interesting photos interspersed throughout the book. This is a rare find. I ordered extra copies as gifts for friends.
A breath of Fresh Air.......2007-01-21
This wonderful book was a Christmas present from my wife. I love it! Growing up, I lived in Florida and North Dakota. That contrast, living in Florida, then in ND, back and forth, gave me a great appreciation for the way of life that the author describes so well; a way of life that is difficult to find these days.
The trip through Norway is so delightfully portrayed that it seems like a personal memory. It has inspired me to go there and trace the author's footsteps. The poems that are scattered throughout the book are simple and uplifting.
