First book in an powerful series.......2007-10-02
4.5 blue ribbons
Kendall Aaronson is stunned by the intense attraction she feels toward two young men who visit her store. She isn't sure how to handle her emotions towards them and is most troubled by the obvious age gap - Kendall's thirty-two years old and she learns that both young men are college students. She may be uncomfortable with the situation but there's no denying the mix of excitement and apprehension she experiences whenever Joshua and Sutter are nearby - and they seem to be showing up everywhere she goes.
Joshua Reed and Sutter Campbell have a unique friendship. From an early age they've shared a bond that allows them to communicate without words - often simply through touch or even thought. They understand and appreciate their bond so when they meet Kendall and are about to `touch' her telepathically, they know that she's meant for them. What they don't expect is for their friendship to undergo some major changes and the resulting repercussions.
Kendall doesn't understand what's going on... even her dreams are filled with Joshua and Sutter and there's just no escaping the constant state of arousal she's been living with ever since she first met the duo. She finally caves in and officially introduces herself to them and they quickly become inseparable. She soon discovers that Joshua and Sutter have tamped down their own desires both for each other and career wise because of Sutter's father's influence in their lives. She has an idea for eliminating David Campbell's control over Joshua and Sutter's lives but David is one determined man and Kendall's interference is definitely not appreciated. Will Kendall be able to uncover the real reason behind David's closed-minded attitude before he destroys the newfound love that she has found with Joshua and Sutter?
Readers will fall in love with this trio and cheer for them through each challenge they face and conquer. Rachel Bo's DOUBLE JEOPARDY presents readers with a tantalizing story full of emotional encounters, unforgettable sex scenes, and characters you can't help but adore. I loved Kendall's take charge attitude and how she wouldn't back down to David. There's no doubt that she's a very strong woman and more than capable of taking on a powerful man like Sutter's father - and winning! It's very easy to lose yourself in this storyline and read it from beginning to end in one sitting and still want more. Fortunately, Rachel Bo continued this series with three other books so be sure to check out her website to learn more about them.
If you'd like to learn more about David's story and what's driven him to turn out the way he has then I'd highly suggest picking up a copy of DANGER IN DISCOVERY.

a definite keeper!!!!.......2007-08-02
This is an excellent book. It grabbed my attention from page 1 and i couldn't put it down. It was a shame to finish it. I liked all the characters, especially Sutter. Both men are Hot and I wish I had them in real life for myself. I think that u will enjoy it too, if you are into this genre. I will recommend this book to everyone i know. It it has a spot on my bookshelf forever!!! Enjoy
An unconventional love ..........2006-01-03
[Note: This review was originally written about the digital edition of this book.]
Kendall Aaronson felt an immediate spark of interest when Josh and Sutter entered her art gallery. But this was an unlikely match - what could these two "hunky" young men of college age see in herself, a Rubenesque woman of thirty-two? What was the attraction she felt, not just for one of the men, but for both together? As the relationship grows, Kendall, Josh, and Sutter discover a deep, soul-satisfying connection, as if the three of them were meant to be together.
However, Sutter's father, a well-to-do lawyer, cannot condone such an unusual arrangement, and throws as many obstacles as possible into their path. Can their love survive his hostility?
This novel-length story was very interesting. I don't usually like menage a trois stories, but this one was well told. I liked the characters - they are sympathetic and well written. I particularly liked Kendall--her low self-esteem due to her size and age rings true in our society, and I was pleased to see her confidence grow and flower as the story developed. The relationship is loving, and egalitarian, with no sense of force or coercion into "kinky" sex. The love scenes were extremely hot, and even the male/male sex scenes communicated sensitivity and caring among this loving group. -- Jean, Fallen Angel Reviews (courtesy of Fallen Angel Reviews)
HOT and STEAMY!!!!!!.......2005-04-12
This book was was steaming from the first page. Anyone who is a fan of the Ellora's Cave books will know what to expect. But R. Bo is one of their new stars. I hope to read much more by her, because with this book I am a fan. Anyone who wants romance and steamy love scenes, this book is for you.
rachael bo at her best.......2005-04-04
the male/female/male idea is a hot fantasy. Double Jeopardy gives readers plenty of hot scenes on this subject matter but i want to add the story also shows readers the deep connection and love between these three people. kendall owns a bookstore. it is there she first meets Sutter and his long time friend Joshua. they're ten years younger than Kendall but from the very beginning Sutter and Josh knew Kendall was their soulmate. Sutter and Josh have a six sense where they're able to know what the other is feeling and thinking. when they stepped into the book store and spotted Kendall they felt it. she was the missing part of the puzzle. she was their soulmate. Kendall also felt it, yet was unable to identify what it all meant. coming to realize there was something special between the three of them Kendall, Sutter, and Josh moved in together. they loved one another, but Sutter's father was doing everything in his power to seperate his son from Josh. Sutter informed his father he and Josh were not gay but words weren't enough for David. when Kendall agreed to marry Sutter they thought his father would leave Josh alone but for some unknown reason(which you'll discover later in the story) he's set on getting Josh out of his son's life. shortly after another wedding takes place where the three are joined together. i throughly enjoyed everything in this book. the book is basically about the three characters but it does include Brandy, Kendall's best friend. Sutter's father, and a couple surprise characters. if you are a reader who enjoys a spicy hot romantic story that includes male/female/male sex you'll love Double Jeopardy Strength In Numbers. i consider this one of Rachel Bo's best book to date! if you haven't read it give it a try. you won't be sorry.

Customer Reviews:
Rachel Bo's STRENGTH IN NUMBERS series turned out to be far more intense and involved then I expected ..........2007-10-07
when I first picked up this series but I've loved every passion-filled page.
DANGER IN DISCOVERY
David Campbell has spent his adult life as a very lonely man. He works long hard hours as a lawyer and tries to ignore his remembered love for Joy and Jason.
Joy and Jason had been David's lovers back in college - never as a ménage. In fact, David had tried to keep his relationship with David a secret but Joy had her suspicions.
Joy and Jason are fully aware that David is scared of the emotional attachment he feels for them, but that doesn't stop them from their mission to seduce him into allowing them back into his life. It's obvious that David is not going to cave in to his desire for Joy and Jason on his own, so they get a little inventive and use a homemade video to entice him to join them. It works but then Joy realizes that David is trying to keep his relationship with them secret. Joy and Jason long to be able to publicly show their love for David but he's got longstanding issues and fears that aren't going to be easy to overcome. Joy and Jason aren't interested in being delegated as David's "when it's convenient" lovers - for them, it's all or nothing! Will David ever be willing to risk his professional life for a chance at happiness in his private life? Is there any hope of a happily ever after for this trio?
I believe out of all the books in this series, DANGER IN DISCOVERY may very well be my favorite. I developed a real fondness for David in DOUBLE JEOPARDY and couldn't help but wonder why he'd be so closed-minded toward his own son's menage relationship. Rachel Bo delves into his character so that you not only understand him better, but you empathize with his reasoning. Joy and Jason are wonderful characters whose happiness with each other radiates off the pages and yet there's no denying that their love for David is just as strong as their love for each other.
BRANDED
Brandy Mitchell is frustrated. She's a successful woman who loves her career and adores her friends. In theory she seems to have everything going for her, but something's missing. Brandy longs for the sort of bond that everyone around her seems to be finding but so far she hasn't felt anything but a passing interest in anyone she's dated.
Brandy's friends are all involved in menage a trois relationships and she's more than a little envious of the bonds that the trios seem to have. She just can't imagine herself involved in a menage with two men. She'd hoped to meet someone on the cruise who would interest her sexually but the last thing she expects is to find herself attracted to a married couple.
Brandy's not a prude and she's quite open-minded but not once has she ever imagined herself being attracted to another woman. She quickly accepts that she desires both Eric and Lin and they have a wonderful time together while on the cruise. It isn't until the cruise is just about over that she discovers who Eric and Lin really are and to make matters even more complicated they reveal that they're both sexual Dominants and want to continue the relationship once the cruise has come to an end. Brandy isn't entirely comfortable with the thought of BDSM but she does have extremely strong feelings for Eric and Lin - she'll soon discover that while their relationship is far from normal, it's just what she needs in her life. Is she brave enough to accept all the aspects that being in a menage/BDSM relationship entails?
BRANDED is a very intense book and honestly I'm not really sure how to put my feelings about it into words. My emotions were all over the place as I read and I'd go from laughter, to shock, and even tears at one point. The BDSM depicted in this storyline is way more involved than I'm used to reading and I found myself squirming a bit because I wasn't completely comfortable with some of it, however that didn't stop my fascination with the characters or the emotions that they each exhibited for each other. My best advice on this book is to keep an open mind while reading and even if some aspects of the lifestyle depicted may not appeal to you, the emotional attachment that the characters exhibit more than likely will.
NOTE: While I did real this book in the print format, I did review both stories individually for Romance Junkies - this review is a combination of the two original reviews spliced together with some deleted to try to keep it shorter

Good book.......2006-07-20
A good follow-up to the first Stength-in-Numbers. I suggest reading them in order - the characters in book 2 will make more sense that way, but it can stand alone. Hopefully, patiently, waiting to see if she cones out with more in this series.
Danger in Discovery.......2006-04-25
[Note: This review was originally written about the digital version of the first story in this book, Danger in Discovery.]
David Campbell is a high-powered lawyer who has always denied his inner nature. When he was in college, he fell in love twice - first with Joy, the woman he wanted to marry, and then with Jason, his male roommate. Due to family pressure, he broke up with both Joy and Jason, and has not seen them for nearly 30 years. However, they have come back into his life due to the efforts he made to break up his son and his son's male and female partners. When his past was revealed, David gave up his efforts to separate the three, and now he enjoys being a grandfather to their children.
Now successful professionals, Joy and Jason have come back into his life. In fact, Joy and Jason are in love with each other, and want David to come back to both of them. They have invited him to complete their triad, but David is afraid of what his friends and clients will say. Is David ready to accept his dual desires?
This novella is a sequel to Rachel Bo's Strength in Numbers 1: Double Jeopardy, the story of David Campbell's son. I really liked this book. It depicted real people with real problems that are not easily solved by superficial methods. The characters had to look within their hearts and find out why they behaved as they did. I was pleased to see people in their 50s as protagonists, which is quite unusual in erotica - apparently, many think that people over 50 don't have sex! The writing is very touching, and the reader feels the emotions running through each situation. The pacing was quite good with one exception -- I felt the ending was a bit abrupt. This erotic novella contains very explicit menage a trois sex scenes, male/female/male and male/male sex, also oral and anal sex, and the use of sex toys. There is no bondage nor discipline here, just a loving triad. -- Jean, Fallen Angel Reviews (courtesy of Fallen Angel Reviews)

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A longer trade compilation, the JLA has to deal with the very deadly Prometheus, and really only do so with the help of a couple of ringers.
They journey to Rann to assist Adam Strange, and meet an old enemy who has started a careful takeover plan. Throw in Dream, the Sandman, as well.
Some great opponents, two many JLAers.......2006-12-24
These stories were originally published as JLA #16-#23.
The stories begin with Superman, Aquaman and Batman reforming the JLA that was disbanded in the last book. It is never made clear why the JLA was disbanded by the three, and, when it is put back together at the end of the first story in this issue, it is the same characters as before, plus Zauriel, Huntress, Steel and Plastic Man (with Oracle behind the scenes). Maybe they disbanded cause the old rules said they could only have seven? And, not that I'm arguing, but who put Superman, Batman and Aquaman in charge? I guess no Wonder Woman at the top because she died and her place was taken by her mother? Superman says the league is the world's only hope, it may be that they needed to add more talents to defeat upcoming opponents.
The storylines with Prometheus and Julian September are excellent, the last two with Adam Strange and the Sandman less so. Prometheus makes his powers equal to all of the JLAers...but he forgets a couple of new members and interlopers. He escapes so expect to see him in later books. Julian September opens up the world to probabilities and events that are million to one shots begin happening regularly. Both of these are great challenges for the team.
Favorite panels: the pictures of the reformed JLA, pg 24, 52 and 90 are spectacular. And the panel on page 202 with J'onn looking down on the eastern Canada, Great Lakes, Greenland area with the monster in the water is great.
The JLA reformed and stronger than ever.......2003-11-03
Following the disbanding of the JLA in the Rock of Ages, the fathers of JLA decide to reform the team and increase the member number, the new members are Zauriel, Steel, Huntress, Plastic Man. This collection also introduces Prometheus and how he takes out the enitre JLA on their own Moonbase. I thought that this was the best story in the trade. The next story was about the case of Julian September and about how he alters probability and how the most normal occurrences are thereby changed, i.e. Bruce Wayne's parents were never killed etc. The final stories were of Adam Strange (the worst one in the trade). All in all pretty entertaining.
The best so far..........2003-02-21
I've been reading the graphic novels in order, and this is the best so far. Following the awful "JLA: Rock of Ages", "JLA: Srength in Numbers" is comprised of a number of shorter stories; each of which is filled with adventure and soul. Yes, these stories have a soul, or a spirit. One of which even brought tears to my eyes. I can't say any other comic in recent memory has had that effect on me. Zauriel is a great addition to the JLA team. Wonder Woman is under used. But as a whole, these stories worked to entertain and inspire. What else can you ask for?
The loves of my life........2001-10-30
Let me first preface this review with saying that I am probably the only one who hated Keith Giffen, et al's former version of the JLA. To me the JLA was never a joke and it was more than just a comic. They were, and continue to be, the World's Greatest Super Heroes. Strength in numbers impressed me enough to return to the world of comics after a 10 year absence and am I glad I came back! Three truly great writers--Waid, Morrison and the extremely underrated Christopher Priest (his work in conjunction with Sal Velluto on Black Panther is nothing short of sublime) have put the word SUPER back into superhero. Even the much maligned Aquaman seems to be embellished with a majesty that until now had not been before seen.
My one problem: the insertion of Barda and Orion into the team. Kirby was a god, but only he really knew how to handle them. Their membership makes the team too top heavy and make other more thoughtful characters like J'onn J'onzz, Zauriel and Aquaman seem as though they're out of place and awkward. But still an enjoyable read and a fine comicbook. Five stars for reinvigorating what thought to be a dying franchise--the super hero team book.

Book Description
An Easygoing, Highly Entertaining Refresher on all the Math You'll Ever Need.
What do two goats and a car have to do with making good decisions? Was the golden ratio used to build the Great Pyramid of Khufu? Can it be that some numbers are unmistakably "hot," while others are inherently "cool"? With his infectiously enthusiastic and engaging style, award-winning teacher and author Sherman K. Stein offers a new appreciation for mathematics, from the beauty of its logic ("as inevitable and memorable as a Mozart symphony") to its amazing power and pervasiveness in our lives. Requiring no math knowledge beyond basic arithmetic and high school geometry, Strength in Numbers is an enlightening introduction to all the math you'll ever need.
Customer Reviews:
Examples of why math makes the world go round.......2003-01-02
Since it does provide much of the foundation for modern societies and the applications are commonly covered with very effective disguises, mathematics is both a pillar and a whipping post. More misunderstood and hence feared than any other subject, it is the only one where it is fashionable and acceptable to profess ignorance. The only solution to this problem is to gently explain how valuable it is and let the economic realities of mathematical knowledge take control. In this book, Stein puts forward many valuable points concerning how necessary mathematics is.
While I do endorse the book, there is one negative point that must be made. The title should be different. One of the points in the book is that mathematics is much more than just number manipulation. Although this is well-known to mathematicians, it is a very common misconception. Therefore, the emphasis on numbers present in the title is unfortunate, but probably necessary for marketing purposes.
Now that the ranting is complete, it is time to praise the interior of the book. All of the points are significant and well made. Stein writes very well, explaining topics in a manner that keeps understanding within the range of the target audience, which is the intelligent layperson. His multiple explanations as to why the product of two negative numbers is positive is excellent. In my career, I have encountered several very educated people in technical fields who really did not understand why this is so. They had simply accepted it because they knew it worked, but had always been afraid of raising the question for fear of embarrassment.
Another point that cannot be emphasized enough is the sudden appearance of a "miracle"(reviewer word) number. These are numbers that are put forward to justify a point and are not subject to critical review. After that, they are accepted at a level that makes the belief in them an act of faith. Honestly, is nature so inefficient in anything that humans really use only 10% of their brains? This is an absurd number that has been repeated so many times that it is accepted as gospel. Stein does his part to help clear up some of these problems. However, it would have been better if more time had been spent in this area.
While there is some strength in numbers, the real power lies in the effective use of them, which is the realm of the underlying mathematics. This book contains many valuable lessons on why mathematics, rather than money, makes the world go round.
Demystifying math..........2002-06-13
Professor Stein's book is an amazing read. It's humorous, insightful, and educational. A couple of those "great mysteries" from our math classes in school are solved and you will slap your forehead and say,"Well, they could have taught me THAT years ago!"
I highly recommend this book to all levels of math students AND math teachers.
As Someone Who Has to Encourage Math. to Youngsters.......2001-08-22
I can use the book to indirectly persuade youngsters, who think Math. is nothing but number and boring, to take it more seriously. It's hard for me to come up with more logical and more convincing than what already there in the book.
Both Halves Are Good.......2000-10-25
As titled: Discover the joy and power of mathematics. I divide this book into two halves. The first half is about our relationship with mathematics. It leads you to think of those numbers around you, and eventually you start to think about what's going on. I especially like the chapter on statistical information. The second part is about mathematical knowledge. The eariler chapters are a bit too easy. Yet I like the proofs very much. The last chapter is so fascinating. And it's only 4 pages long! This is a mathematics book I really like.
A delight.......1999-06-13
Stein successfully convinces the lay readerthat math is an interesting and fascinating game. Right on! Such a book makes a positive contribution to education and hence to society.Keep up the good work.In particular, Stein's personal antecdotes demonstrate that math excellence can be integrated into one's total humanity.

A Walk around the Pond: Insects in and over the Water
ASIN: 0674006860 |
Book Description
Insects that are the least bit social may gather in modest groups, like the dozen or so sawfly larvae feeding on a pine needle, or they may form huge masses, like a swarm of migratory locusts in Africa or a cloud of mayflies at the edge of a midwestern lake or river. Why these insects get together and what they get out of their associations are questions finely and fully considered in this learned and entertaining look at the group behavior and social lives of a wide array of bugs.
The groups that Gilbert Waldbauer discusses here are not as complex or tightly organized as the better-known societies of termites, wasps, ants, and bees. Some, like the mayflies, come together merely because they emerge from the water in the same place at the same time. But others, like swarms of locusts, are loosely organized, the individual insects congregating to migrate together for distances of hundreds of miles. And yet others form a simple cooperative society, such as the colony of tent caterpillars that weaves a silken tent to house the whole group.
Waldbauer tells us how individuals in these and other insect aggregations communicate (or don't), how they coordinate their efforts, how some congregate the better to mate, how some groups improve the temperature and humidity of their microenvironment, and how others safeguard themselves (or the future of their kind) by amassing in such vast numbers as to confound predators.
As engaging and authoritative as Waldbauer's previous books, Millions of Monarchs, Bunches of Beetles will enlighten and delight those who know their insects well and those who wish to know them better.
Customer Reviews:
Readable, fascinating, with the right amount of information.......2002-07-31
This is a survey book--It has a chapter on each of several types of insects that have social or clustering behavior, but aren't the classic social insects, such as ants or bees. Some of the insects covered are butterflies, notably monarchs, locusts, and ladybugs. There is a fair, but not overwhelming, amount of information on each type of insect. The style is highly readable. I liked the book so much, I went and bought other of Waldbauer's books. Highly recommmended!
a neat book.......2001-08-06
A pretty neat book. It gives you interesting insights into the insect world without being too techy. I didn't read it cover to cover but instead I pick it up when I'm wondering about an insect. It has insects that you'd encounter in everyday life which is helpful
Good Natural History Book.......2001-07-31
The theme of this book is insect sociality but the author, a distinguished entomologist, does not discuss well known eusocial insects like bees and termites. The concentration is on the lesser known aspects of social behavior in feeding, mating, predation, avoidance of predation, etc., among many insect species. Prof. Waldbauer is a good writer who attacks his subjects with enthusiasm. Underlying all examples in this book is the adaptive importance of even primitive social behavior. The book is organized into a number of relatively short chapters on different aspects of insect sociality, which makes for quick reading.
Insects by the Numbers.......2000-05-15
This book, surprisingly, does not concentrate on the social insects, the ants, bees, and termites that have famous and complicated societies. Rather, it describes the less rigid teams or clumps that other insects make, to examine how evolution has exploited living by the numbers. You will find out how ladybirds and tent caterpillers gather to control the weather around them; how milkweed bugs feed together in a way that wouldn't work if they did it individually; why tropical fireflies set up a communal beacon in trees; and how periodic cicadas manage to come out by the billions in thirteen or seventeen year cycles.
Insects are enormously successful and are fascinating and accessible objects for wonder. _Millions of Monarchs_ looks at one aspect of insect behavior, spread in various and intricate forms. Waldbauer's accumulation of facts is impressive (and he can't resist telling us about the analogous group behaviors of say, horse-shoe crabs), and well organized according to the benefits which evolution has made available to congregations of insects. Anyone interested in what insects do will find learning here.
Millions of Monarchs.......2000-03-30
This is an extremely fascinating book. To the best of my knowledge, the information about monarchs is accurate and credits respected sources. All the chapters have information that makes you more and more aware of the wonders of the natural world. The chapter on monarchs covers their migration, their toxicity, their eating and mating habits and more. The information is backed up by research data collected in the last 40+ years. I recommend it!

Book Description
America's increasing racial and ethnic diversity is viewed by some as an opportunity to challenge and so reinforce the country's social fabric; by others, as a portent of alarming disunity. While everyone agrees that this diversity is markedly influencing political dynamics not only nationally but often on the state and local levels, we know little about how racial and ethnic groups organize and participate in politics or how political elites try to mobilize them. This book tells us. By integrating class-based factors with racial and ethnic factors, Jan Leighley shows what motivates African-Americans, Latinos, and Anglos to mobilize and participate in politics. Drawing on national survey data and on interviews with party and elected officials in Texas, she develops a nuanced understanding of how class, race, and ethnicity act as individual and contextual influences on elite mobilization and mass participation.
Leighley examines whether the diverse theoretical approaches generally used to explain individual participation in politics are supported for the groups under consideration. She concludes that the political and social context influences racial and ethnic minorities' decisions to participate, but that different features of those environments are important for different groups. Race and ethnicity structure participation more than previous research suggests. Casting new light on an issue at the crux of contemporary American politics, Strength in Numbers? will be welcomed by scholars and students of political science, African-American and Latino studies, urban politics, and social movements.
