Book Description
Practical, real-world solutions to lockouts. Learn to open doorknobs, deadbolts, car doors, padlocks, handcuffs, et cetera. This book sold out as "Lock Bypass Methods," and has proven to be the best manual on keyless entry available. Since your resources are usually on the other side of the door when you're locked out, it shows how to improvise tools from garbage and common, everday items. Multiple entrance options are provided in case of stubborn doors or limited materials. Thousands of people have successfully opened doors using techniques they learned in "Lock Bypass Methods." This expanded edition has more illustrations and new techniques.
This book will not waste your time trying to explain how to pick sidebar locks, or activate magnetic-stripe readers without a key card. It DOES explain how to open doors protected by these locks, simply and without damage, through bypass techniques. A latch holds something shut, and a lock is a gateway to that latch. This book teaches ways to climb over the fence and ignore the gate. You will learn how to pick locks, a skill that works 60-70% of the time. More importantly, you will learn methods to trip actuators, move linkage rods, take advantage of mechanical design flaws, exploit tolerances in a lock's setting, and other practical means of entry.
The book's focus is on problem solving, not presenting methods that are too difficult to accomplish. Many other books in this field suffer from too much theory and too little delivery. If it doesn't work, it isn't in here. This book is designed to give the reader skills that open locks without keys or damage. It is not a whitewashed or glossed-over set of instructions that leave a reader feeling as if failure is his fault and he just hasn't developed some special esoteric talent. Difficulties encountered in opening methods are identified, explained, and solutions are given to cope with them. The book is clearly written and illustrated, and covers problem solving, how locks work, picking, bypassing, and tool making. If you are interested in opening locks without keys, you should have this book.

Good ideas.......2007-03-09
Helped me understand various lock systems better. I appreciated the innovative ideas the author presented, many of which actually may have a hope of working in the real world. Definitely has a MacGyver-esque quality to it, without being hokey and completely unfeasible.
Far from easy ...........2004-12-09
I had been trying to open an old S&L moneybox for some time - the lock mechanism is "simple" per this book. Curiosity can be frustrating. I didn't want to spend any money on tools for a one off project (I ended up doing this and bought another book). The intellectual satisfaction was worth it. I'm interested in antiques so may get some payback for learning in the future. (I can now also open simple padlocks, and furniture locks, with an improvised tool in fairly quick time.)
The information on getting into a locked car is easy to follow; I knew some of this before buying the book but the process will be easier in future. The stuff on handcuffs also appears straightforward - if you use them for business or pleasure - I don't - this could be worth reading.
This is a practical book but hard work and requires practice. Worth reading if you have a real interest in locks and will practice. Not for beginers; I bought this book first then came back to it.
Just about there........2004-09-20
personally im only interested in picking locks and this book does help abit, but it focuses more on bypassing security systems and teaches you how.
the paragraphing is kinda compact and so are the instructions and diagrams for me- someone with little technical background.
a good read for the hot and lazy afternoon or those boring plane trips.
Informative book.......2004-02-25
Even though it is quite a small book, it's one that is highly recommended. Some of the items are obvious, while others are helpful and make you think about your surroundings or for just utilizing cheap alternatives to professional tools that might not be in your bag of tricks. For example, the author says to use a cut out of a clear 2liter bottle for a plug remover to hold the pins & springs, while seeing what is going on through the clear plastic. Neat idea and not obvious to all.
I'm just a novice at picking, but learning quite rapidly. There are exercises to improve your skills.
The only thing bad I can say about the book is the first chapter. Long winded, but basically states the following: 1) picking what you aren't supposed to is illegal and will get you into trouble, 2) don't be egotistical and show off to your friends thinking you can pick anything, and 3) practice practice practice, that's the only way you'll be proficient in lock bypassing & picking.
Lockpicking 301.......2004-02-12
This book ought to be the third level for someone who is interested in learning how to pick locks though it contains
information which may be useful to anyone. From this book one can learn how to develop and use a number of common items to unlock locks of a variety of sorts whether the lock be on a car or a house. Though I am not a locksmith, I have been practicing lockpicking for some time because somebody always forgets the keys. Conkel's book contains a number of ideas which will open locks easily which had never occurred to me.

New (or used) Author, YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!.......2006-07-11
I just purchased John's most recent edition and it is absolutely jam packed with every idea you will probably ever need to get your books in the hands of readers. Notice I did not say booksellers because John's advice goes far beyond just getting your book on the shelves. He gets into practically every aspect of promotion and publicity, which is what is needed to sell books these days. John truly is the "King" of book marketing and promotion. He "gets it!"

Great for publishers, but..........2004-03-11
When I received my book contract, my publisher recommended this book, and I hurried out to the library to pick up a copy -- but I found that it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. If you're starting a publishing house of your own, this is an excellent resource, but it's not ideal for authors. I flipped through chapters full of information that didn't apply to me -- and I often felt that authors were an afterthought, spoken to only in the occasional box at the end of a section. I did get a few good ideas from this book, however, and if you're preparing to promote a book of your own, pick it up from the library and page through it. For authors, I recommend Publicize Your Book! by Jacqueline Deval -- it will give you more of what you need.

I am a one-book publisher. About two years ago, when I first began to think about writing and publishing, I read thisbook. I should tell you that I am extremely thrifty and I onlybuy books that I will refer to again and again. I'll even admitthat I first read the library's copy of this book. However, afterI read 1001 Ways to Market Your Books, I immediatelyplaced an order so that I could have a copy of my own. It hasbeen worth its weight in gold to me. It's the best marketingtool for books that I know of, with clear explanations and lotsof examples. If you are an author or a publisher, or even thinking aboutbecoming one, I strongly suggest that you get this book. I can't think of a better $20 investment in your book-sellingfuture. Book Description
One of the greatest gifts parents can give their children is the assurance that Mom and Dad love them just as they are, apart from anything that they do. But telling them once won't make it sink in. Kids need to be reminded of it over and over, until those words get inside their hearts.
In the same way, children need to hear again and again that their Heavenly Father loves them and wants to spend time with them--even if they're not wonderfully talented or extremely smart or exceptionally popular.
That message of God's unconditional acceptance and deep desire to enjoy a friendship with His children is at the heart of this book.
Just the Way You Are, originally published by Crossway Books as
Children of the King, has been newly illustrated to enchant a whole new generation of youngsters. At the same time, it gives parents and grandparents fresh opportunities to write God's never-changing desire on tender souls.
Combining the warm narrative of best-selling author Max Lucado and the classic illustrations of award-winning artist Sergio Martinez,
Just the Way You Are will entertain young readers as it teaches them a truth that can open their hearts to Christ.
That truth--the assurance of God's delight in them--is a blessing that has eternal impact for all children of the King everywhere.

WONDERFUL KIDS' BOOK! .......2006-02-25
Wonderful children's book. Beautiful illustrations, well written and a wonderful message......We donated it to our daughter's school library for her 9th birthday.
Highly recommend it
Read this to your children.......2005-09-13
I read this little story to my daughter tonight. She is 5. It prompter her to ask all kinds of questions that led to us having a great conversation about the meaning of this book. It also helped me put some things in perspective, too. I think we are better people because of it.
wonderful!.......2004-09-02
Max Lucado is one of my favorite authors. This is such a sweet story. His analogies are so good. The illustrations are very nice. This is an awesome book to teach your children, and is short enough, it can also be a bedtime story book. I loved it and I can't wait for my children to read it. Also, check out "You are Special" by the same author. Brilliant!
Culturally Diverse or Not, a Wonderful Book.......2003-09-19
I had to respond after reading the post of another user. If they had read any of Max Lucado's books on the Wemmicks (you are special, you are mine and just the way you are) she would know that Max Lucado and the people working for Mr. Lucado do take cultural diversity under consideration.
This book is a phenomenal tale of the Love our King is waiting for us to show him. We do not have to be busy about all kinds of tasks to please him, but just give Him our heart! Yes perhaps there was not the proper percentage of races represented in this book, but the theme of the story is much more important than the illustrations.
Fantastic book, pictures or not. Read it to your children, and show them how much the King of the universe loves them as well.
Content matters more than style........2003-04-30
I gave this book 4 stars because I haven't read it
yet, and I didn't want to skew the average, one way
or the other. Basically, I just wanted to post a
rebuttal to what another reviewer wrote.
To the charge made by another reviewer, that the
illustrations are Euro-centric, and children of
colour might find them dull and boring:
Regardless of their ethnicity, children MAY find the
illustrations dull and boring....But, content matters
more than style. The moral of the story is what one
hopes they will remember.
As a person of colour myself, I would feel more
comfortable giving my kids a Christian book, than
I would say, a "Little Bill" book.
Would you take poison if it came in candy wrapper?
Not to belittle "Little Bill," but Christian books
like these are all too rare, to worry about issues
of "cultural diversity" in illustrations.
That said,...Max Lucado, if you ever get a chance to
read this, you may wish to consider teaming up with

Book Description
GNU/Linux is an immensely popular operating system that is both extremely stable and reliable. But it can also induce minor headaches at the most inopportune times, if you're not fully up to speed with its capabilities.
A unique approach to running and administering Linux systems, Linux Annoyances for Geeks addresses the many poorly documented and under appreciated topics that make the difference between a system you struggle with and a system you really enjoy. This book is for power users and system administrators who want to clear away barriers to using Linux for themselves and for less trained users in their organizations.
This book meticulously tells you how to get a stubborn wireless card to work under Linux, and reveals little-known sources for wireless drivers and information. It tells you how to add extra security to your systems, such as boot passwords, and how to use tools such as rescue disks to overcome overly zealous security measures in a pinch. In every area of desktop and server use, the book is chock full of advice based on hard-earned experience.
Author Michael Jang has spent many hours trying out software in a wide range of environments and carefully documenting solutions for the most popular Linux distributions. (The book focuses on Red Hat/Fedora, SUSE, and Debian.) Many of the topics presented here are previously undocumented or are discussed only in obscure email archives.
One of the valuable features of this book for system administrators and Linux proponents in general is the organization of step-by-step procedures that they can customize for naive end-users at their sites. Jang has taken into account not only the needs of a sophisticated readership, but the needs of other people those readers may serve.
Sometimes, a small thing for a user--such as being able to play a CD--or for an administrator--such as updating an organizations' systems from a central server--can make or break the adoption of Linux. This book helps you overcome the most common annoyances in deploying Linux, and trains you in the techniques that will help you overcome other problems you find along the way.
In keeping with the spirit of the Annoyances series, the book adopts a sympathetic tone that will quickly win you over. Rather than blaming you for possessing limited Linux savvy, Linux Annoyances for Geeks takes you along for a fun-filled ride as you master the system together.
Customer Reviews:
GEEKS GONE WILD!!.......2007-02-19
Are you annoyed from time to time that you can't find the right hardware; or can't configure a server; or are supporting less experienced users? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Michael Jang, has done an outstanding job of writing a cool book that addresses many of the more common complaints faced by the experienced Linux user.
Jang, begins by providing you solutions for some of the everyday annoyances. Then, the author gives some tips for the less experienced users. Next, the author shows you how to make Internet access as convenient and simple as possible for regular users. He also provides solutions for the geek who needs to set up regular users with access to popular tools, such as PDF files, MP3 players, and Windows-based applications. The author continues by showing the geek how to make choices in hardware, distributions, and systems that are appropriate for his or her users. Then, he shows the geek how to optimize Linux, solve some annoying boot issues, and address some basic security concerns. Next, the author focuses primarily on those kernal-related tasks that make most Linux users look to the geek for help. He then focuses on a variety of annoyances related to keeping your systems running smoothly and up-to-date. The author continues by showing you how to select and configure servers to solve a variety of problems, with a higher degree of security. Then, he focuses on annoyances created by and associated with the presence of different kinds of users in an organization. Finally, the author provides solutions for a wide variety of other annoyances related to system administration.
This most excellent book shows you how to get a stubborn wireless card to work under Linux. Perhaps more importantly, it reveals little-known sources for wireless drivers and information.
Linux for Geeks - indeed!.......2006-09-16
The book is a valuable reference text that may help to identify and repair many problems on the desktop or server. Linux professionals responsible for the operation and maintenance of desktop computers and servers will benefit most from the wide range of solutions provided for common problems. Semi-geeky Linux users may enjoy an informative look under the hood of Linux, even if they have low expectations of making the repairs themselves. Non-geeks, who just want to use Linux, are best off with Linux for Non-Geeks by Rickford Grant, published by No Starch Press, affiliated with O'Reilly.
Great resource.......2006-08-31
Linux is a great operating system but like every other one it has some annoyances that may crop up from time to time. The purpose of this book is to help the reader to get Linux to work the way they want it to without getting annoyed in the process. As such the target audience is the Linux power user and system administrators.
Some of the areas covered include configuring GNOME applications in KDE and configuring KDE applications in GNOME, X Window configuration, working with CDs and DVDs, configuring sound, converting from Outlook, interfacing with various Instant Messaging programs, working with Microsoft Office documents, multimedia, hardware issues, startup problems, system maintenance, CUPS printing, using Samba, and various administrative tasks. One of the really great features of the book is that the author provides the details of how to make the changes in each of the most common distributions including Red Hat, SUSE, and Debian. So you know right away how to do it in the particular distribution you are working with. This is one of the things that really sets this book apart from others in this category and makes it one of the best choices possible.
Linux Annoyances for Geeks is an excellent book that details step-by-step how to work through the annoyances and get the results you want. With easy to follow the steps and the correct results every time it is a highly recommended resource.
Not for true "geeks" at all........2006-07-29
This is another book that implies it's for power users, yet most of what's in here can be found in any garden variety book on how to run Linux. Only part of this book is aimed at "geeks".
The promotional text on the back cover implies that it's aimed at sysadmins. And while *some* of it is, most of it is stuff that a system administrator would already be familiar with.
Much of what's in this book is the same stuff aimed at beginning to intermediate Linux desktop users. It's not for real "geeks" or sysadmins by any means.
If only the truly useful stuff for sysadmins/geeks were included, the book would be 1/3 it's size.
It's not that it's a bad book; it's just not marketed well at all and has a very misleading title.
I found it a complete waste of money. It's hard to find books for "intermediate to advanced" users. I figured this would be one of them. It's not.
I was quite disappointed.
Excellent for those looking to solve common (annoying) issues.......2006-07-15
This book isn't for a beginners but for those who already have experience with linux. I consider myself a moderate geek. Although the book doesn't explain everything in detail, it does have good references to other links that go into detail. For examples it explains how to install kerberos, but doesn't go into much detail on the hows or whys. I like the fact that it's not a bible!!!. It's pretty up to date on distros, SuSE 9.3-10, Debain Sarge, Fedora/RHEL 4. I consider this book a wrapping of all the google and forum anwsers I have been looking for. Overall I enjoyed the book.

Lacked depth.......2007-08-06
The premise of this book, poor girl falls for man she doesn't know is rich was fine...but....
A. There was no real depth to the story
B. Couldn't connect to any of the characters
C. To the point too fast (not descriptive enough), you couldn't get a good feel of the surroundings.
D. Did not engross the reader and was VERY predictable.
Honestly I only finished the book because I spent the money buying it.
Terrible. I skipped around and then ended up reading the end........2007-05-09
I read Close to You and loved it! so I decided to go backwards and read the other two prescott sisters stories. I never should have bothered. The interesting characters and well thought out plot line found in Tonue in chic was glaringly missing in this book. The herione was complete milktoast...and I really really hate the whole relationship built on a lie storyline. Come on, really...does any relationship like that really work. NO. I did the speed read version of this book. Sighing in relief when it was over. Too bad there is not a satisfaction guarantee on some of these books. $7 is a lot to waste on nonsense like this one. Skip the first two prescott books...go straight to Tongue in chic and read Christina Dodd from there. It is obvious her writing has greatly improved over the years. Her new stuff is great.
Excellant authoress.......2007-03-19
I love reading her books. You feel you actually know the characters.
More PLEASE.......2005-10-20
I loved this book... and the desire it gave ME to feel that kind of instant attraction and love again. I was a bit upset at the ending, as it felt rushed, but I am looking forward to the next in this series.
My only negative remark, if you would consider it negative, is that I was NOT ready for the story to end. It left me wanting more of Zack and Hope!
Good book for rainy days.......2005-09-05
Christina writes enjoyable books. Very easy to read and enjoy.
Sometimes the characters are weak or just the opposite, strong.
I will continue to read future books.

The author is very good weaving characters that are not *too* perfect. Had the Marine mentality down as well which made it very fun to read.

Book Description
Christopher Lee Nutter came out of the closet in 1994 with a bang in a brutally honest essay for Details magazine, thrusting him into the spotlight as an unofficial mentor to gay men across the country.
Twelve years later in this edgy memoir, Nutter chronicles his journey from closeted Southern boy to gay New York bartender and party boy, sharing everything he's learned about how gay men are taught to see themselves in a fundamentally destructive way. Assaulted with programming from the "gay" and "straight" worlds alike, gay men are left to ask themselves, Am I the coolest, sexiest, trendiest thing ever, or an illegitimate cancer on society?
Nutter contests that gay men are neither, but rather conscious beings on the path to realizing that they have the power to create their lives according to their own will rather than the will of the world, or the illusion of their fears. Part memoir, part philosophy, The Way Out gives tools tailored to the reality of gay men's daily existence-whether it's in the boardroom, the bedroom or the steam room- so that they can connect to this power, and in the process, discover the love, freedom and happiness they long for and deserve.
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2006-07-31
I read this book five times and I learned something new every time. Give this book to someone you love.
Should be read by every gay man.......2006-06-20
The Way Out is a superb guide for gay men who want to achieve true freedom and peace of mind in their sexuality and relationships, and ultimately, the liberation promised by the greatest spiritual teachers of past and present. I cannot say enough good things about this book. I sincerely believe that nearly every gay man would profit tremendously by reading it and taking its recommendations seriously.
Nutter doesn't attempt to impose a new paradigm onto what it means to be gay, but rather helps us realize the importance of breaking out of ALL limiting paradigms so that we can be truly free. And yes, this is possible! Like the author, I've tasted it myself. As Nutter points out, it's only our unexamined beliefs that cause us pain and apparent limitation. Anybody who doesn't understand this has not yet taken the time to look at and critically examine his or her beliefs. And if the idea of doing this makes you uncomfortable, which it might, it's probably because you're just holding onto a belief about what it might mean.
The Way Out is NOT just another "coming out" guidebook. While it treats coming out with great depth and clarity, it the only book I know of that takes the idea of "coming out" ALL the way -- right through complete self-acceptance into self-liberation. This is the only true liberation possible for anyone, straight or gay.
Nutter has obviously navigated a challenging life road, and he candidly shares his fascinating stories with humility, honesty, humor and the clarity born of the willingness to follow one's own truth. Doing so has brought him enormous wisdom for a man still in his 30's. At 41, I've been following my own path of freedom for many years, but Nutter's book has offered me insights that I crucially needed. I completely agree with the subtitle to the book which suggests that any gay, bi or questioning man can profit from reading it, no matter how in or out of the closet he is.
In fact, if this book becomes the hit it deserves to be, the dominant gay culture, which as Nutter suggests can be as oppressive as straight culture, might change overnight. Buy this book, read it, be inspired by it, dive into your depths, find what is true before and beyond all the garbage in your mind (garbage imposed by straight culture and gay culture, but particularly our own minds), and realize freedom. Then give this book to others so that they can find freedom as well.
In closing, the only limitation I will ascribe to The Way Out is that the author does not explicitly recommend additional readings on the subject of spiritual freedom (although I realize this may have been an editorial decision). Interested readers of this book may want to consult Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" (the biggest-selling spiritual book of the century so far, and one which Nutter quotes in the text), and also Byron Katie's "Loving What Is," which would be an extremely helpful companion to the type of liberating inquiry into one's pain-inducing beliefs that Nutter recommends. The teachings of these two authors will complement perfectly Nutter's inspiring teachings on freedom in the final part of his marvelous book.
The Easy Way Out.......2006-06-09
I am a gay man but not a "book reader" (although I read a bunch of classics for school...). When I picked up this book, something told me this was not an ordinary book.. And after reading it twice I can attest that the rare combination Nutter created betrween personal journal and advice is truly magical and very easy to read. Although my own personal experiences were different than his, the way he writes allows you to apply the Wisdom he offers to your own life. It helped me a great deal.
Inspirational.......2006-05-18
Christopher Nutter's book is truly inspirational. I am not a gay man. In fact, I am a straight woman. But the information contained in Mr. Nutter's real life stories, and his journey toward self realization is brilliant and thought provoking for everyone. I recommend this book for you to read, or, at the very least, to purchase for a gay friend or family member. You will not be disappointed.

Alli has loved Sam most of her life. So she was the tag-along sister and he was in love with her beautiful sister Tessa. One fateful night, Tessa abandoned Sam with dreams of a successful modeling career. When she returned to him, she found out that he and her sister had an affair that resulted in a pregnancy. Tessa fled and went onto a successful career without ever returning home.
Alli has always known that Tessa was Sam's first love (and she thinks his only love), but the coincidental separation that she asks for just as Tessa comes to town while their ailing aunt recovers from a debilitating stroke, tests her resolve about her own feelings for the husband she has always loved and who she felt merely tolerated their situation, and the sister she betrayed.
When Alli tells Tessa that Sam still loves her, Tessa soon begins imagining her life in their sleepy oceanside town, and quickly forages a relationship with Alli and Sam's daughter. Machinations by Aunt Phoebe force the three to spend time together to locate a freshwater pearl for Phoebe's unfinished necklace.
The three characters embark on an emotional voyage of love, loss, and knowing when to move on, as they face their pasts and futures, all captured through the lens of fashion photographer Jimmy, who has more than a passing (or professional) interest in Tessa.
Passible romance, interesting concept.......2004-07-29
I wish I could give this 3.5 stars because it really is an above average romance read. Freethy has a way with descriptions and her characters were believeable and sympathetic. The concept of the book--two sisters who believe they love the same man--was also intriguing.
The book flounders, however, in the plot resolution. The dramatic set up is strong: After 8 years of small town marriage, Alli Tucker has separated from her much loved husband Sam, because she's tired of having never heard the words, "I love you" come out of his mouth. She also believes Sam has never gotten over his adolescent love for her beautiful, super-model, globe-trotting older sister, Tessa, the woman Alli "stole" Sam from 8 years before.
When Alli and Tessa's grandmother suffers a stroke, Tessa returns to the small town she fled 8 years before and the dramatic conflict begins. Alli still desperately loves Sam but is no longer willing to be what she believes is "second place" in his heart. Tessa is hearing her biological clock ticking and is having regrets she didn't stay with Sam when she had the chance all those years before. Sam is torn between his familial commitment to Alli and their daughter Megan, the child conceived as a result of Alli's seduction of him 8 years before, and the memories of his unfulfilled love for the gorgeous Tessa.
Freethy deftly shows the confused and conflicted emotions of all three characters. Her portrayal of the deep feelings between Sam and Alli is particularly good, but the conflict went on too long. That's all the novel really was, a continuing play on this love triangle that had the characters saying the same things to each other over and over again. It's also obvious very early in the story what the outcome is going to be and who is going to end up with whom.
Even so, this is a well written and engaging read. It's the first Freethy I've read and I'm tempted to try another, hopefully with a bit more developed plot, based on this one's strengths.
Fabulous!!.......2003-06-19
Alli has loved Sam all her life. Sam has loved Tessa (Alli's sister) since they were children. Tessa and Sam were an item back in high school, and Alli always ended up as the 3rd wheel.
Then Tessa, the beauty of the sisters, is offered the opportunity of a lifetime to go modeling and she takes it leaving Sam by himself with a broken heart and a lot of alcohol. Alli took the chance she had been waiting for all her life, and comforted Sam in ways she had only dreamed of.
9 years later and Alli and Sam are unhappily married with a child that came from that night of broken hearts and alcohol.
Sam seems to resent Alli for tying him up to a life he never asked for (however he adores his daughter), but has grown accostumed to.
Alli, on the other hand, is sick and tired of being the cause of so much unhappines in Sam's life and to add insult to serious injury, she finds out that Sam has not forgotten Tessa after all this years and actually keeps wondering of what his life would have been with her in it, and without Alli and Megan (their daughter) in it. So she decides to set Sam free, even if it hurts her like crazy.
No, dont think she does it for the noble reasons, she is sick of loving Sam with all her heart while all this time he has never told her that he loves her, or anything similar for that matter.
Now, Sam is confused, and angry at Alli for separating him from his family and most importantly his daughter, after he has finally resigned himself to that life, but no matter what, Alli is not backing down. She is sure she deserves a man that loves her back, and she doesn't want to keep on going with her life without ever having experienced that feeling.
To add a nice twist to the story, Alli and Tessa's gradma suffer a stroke and Tessa and Alli must now face each other after 9 years of emotional injuries, hatred and tons and tons of resentmet.
The story is simply beautiful and so beleivable. I was so enthralled in the story that I simply could not put it down and had to finish it that same day I got it.
Alli is a real wounded woman and simpathizing with her is so easy, even when she is behaving like a child. And how could you not after putting yourself in her shoes, however, she takes control of things most of the time and does the right thing as well.
Tessa is not as likeable as Alli, but she is not hateable by any chance. You can see her point and understand why she is seeking for a second chance with Sam, the man she thought was meant for her, before her sister came crashing into her relationship.
Sam is a great man, he's so very real and palpable.
Overall the story is impossible to put down. It's funny, heartwarming, sincere, bealivable, sad and beautiful. I highly recomend it. My only complaint is that I wish the epilogue had been longer and gone into more detail!!
Serious novel about relationships.......2002-06-03
Romance readers put up with a Lot: too much mystery, too much suspense, too much historical detail - all we really want is a novel about people and their romantic relationships! Barbara Freethy delivers this beautifully in Just the Way You Are. It has as its basic premise 2 very competitive sisters who loved the same boy as teenagers. Tessa, the blonde beauty, dumped Sam Tucker and went on to become a supermodel. Younger sister, Allie, jumped in when Sam was most vulnerable, got herself pregnant and married the man of her dreams. Now it's 9 years later and Allie is sick of wondering if the reason Sam has never told her he loves her is because he is still in love with Tessa. A family emergency brings all 3 together to sort out their lives and feelings. See??? This is an ideal set-up to portray Allie's jealosy and insecurity; Sam's indecision and weakness and Tessa's own unfinished emotions. Daughter Megan features prominently in the mix (Good! most romance readers love kids in the story.) and the whole book is about resolving these 3 peoples' tension and moving on with life. Wonderful!! Who could ask for more?? Barbara Freethy gives romance readers exactly what we want and we walk away very satisfied. Obviously highly recommended.
Boring, boring, boring..........2001-11-06
I usually agree with Harriet Klausner on her reviews, but I'm sorry, I couldn't agree on this one. I found this book to be incredibly boring. It was the same thing chapter after chapter. Maybe I didn't find this book interesting because I'm such a huge fan of historical romance and I don't read contemperary romance much, but I have enjoyed Sandra Brown's and Nora Robert's contemperary romance. By the end of the book I was sick of Sam and Alli. The only character with any personality was Jimmy. Sorry...

Bestselling Rainbow Fish author Marcus Pfister again explores the issue of perception and acceptance in this nutty story about animals dissatisfied with their own appearances. A lion, a toucan, a chameleon, a kangaroo, and others repeat the same conversation over and over when asked if they're going to the party that night. Each doubts whether he will go, because he believes "no one cares whether I come or not." If, however, the Lion had a beak and wings like Toucan, or Elephant could hop like Kangaroo, or Hedgehog were as colorful as Chameleon, then everyone would admire them. Ultimately, of course, everyone realizes that they like each other just the way they are, and they party on, trunks, beaks, and manes intact.
Die-cut holes in the pages reveal glimpses of the hybrid creatures; turn the page to find vibrant two-page spreads of the fanciful animals. Pfister's grainy, rough-textured illustrations may appeal to a different audience from that of his sparkly fish books, but those who like the built-in message about friendship and self-acceptance--as well as the zany amalgamations of animals--will enjoy this simple, cyclical tale. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

Funny sights indeed, but in the end all the animal friends agree that they like each other just the way they are. Children will be reassured by this entertaining animal mix-and-match fantasy, which offers a warm and gentle affirmation of true friendship.

You're Perfect...Just the Way You Are............2002-06-26
Hedgehog asks Lion, "Are you coming to the party tonight?" Lion answers no, he doesn't think so. "No one cares whether I come of not." Now, if he had a beautiful beak and wings like a toucan... And as the reader looks through the die cut hole in the page, they see a glimpse of just what Lion wishes for. Turn the page and see a two page spread of this magical, whimsical new animal with a little comment from Hedgehog. "That would be fun to see. But I like you just the way you are." So begins Marcus Pfister's delightful picture book, and youngsters will revel in all the fun as they watch the hedgehog turn part colorful chameleon, the toucan grow an elephant's trunk and large heavy feet, the chameleon take on long, thin stork legs, the elephant transform into a pouched, jumping kangaroo, and the kangaroo grow a beautiful lion's mane. Mr Pfister's simple, repetitive text lets little ones "help" you read, and the marvelous, charming hybrid artwork is bold, vibrant, and dazzles with creativity and imagination. Perfect for preschoolers, this little treasure of a book sends the strong message of friendship, pride, and self-respect; that you're special "just the way you are" and others admire and accept you because you're you. "It was a wonderful party filled with good times and good friends."
Bravo!.......2002-04-24
I think this book will be a children's classic, right up there with "Good Night Moon". Written and illustrated by Marcus Pfister, this book explains the meaning of true friendship, but not in a preachy way. The language and illustrations are equally lovely.
