FIRST LOVE ISN'T FOREVER...

Exhibit A: Faith's little sister, Skye, who muddled through her first divorce at the tender age of twenty-one. Faith has always provided damage control when Skye's love life gets too reminiscent of a daytime drama. But now that Faith has finally found the job, if not the man, of her dreams -- as a culinary writer, currently living la dolce vita in Italy -- she can't just jet back to small-town Minnesota to help her suddenly pregnant little sister heal her broken heart and anemic bank account.

BUT NEVER SAY NEVER!

Faith has been putting off this homecoming for years, ever since her dad left her family in the lurch, her mother left her in charge of Skye, and a sub-zero case of cold feet led her to call off the engagement to her high school sweetheart, Flynn. But a return to the amber fields of grain might just be what Faith needs to gain some perspective on her past -- and figure out her future. It's been way too long since her last love affair...memories of Flynn still get in the way of every man she meets. But if she and Flynn are really meant to be, why does the path to happily-ever-after have so many potholes?

I thought the ending of the book was pretty unrealistic. Yes I know it's fiction, but it just seemed a little too sugar-coated for my taste. Overall it was an ok book, but not one I'd buy - get it from the library instead!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!.......2006-11-03

I think this is one of the best books I have ever read! Beth Kennrick has a great talent with writing. The characters are so real with makes the book even better. Definitely won't be able to put the book down because you just want to keep reading because it's that good! Definitely recommended guaranteed you will enjoy!!

4 out of 5 stars Fab characters.......2006-01-30

Somebody else mentioned the cover, so I wasn't the only one who checked this out because of the eyecatching photo. Kendrick created a story and characters with a sense of humor, great female relationships and characters with multiple facets. I loved Faith the most, and would definitely read another Kendrick book.

4 out of 5 stars Reading this will be the best mistake you'll make.......2005-11-05

A successful traveling food writer, Faith reluctantly returns to her Minnesota roots to aid her flighty sister in turning a profit on the bar they own together. She does not count on having to run into Flynn, her first (and only) love. Ten years earlier, Flynn gave her an ultimatum - marry him or move on. She chose to move on to LA with a bass player (which comes up in several humorous conversations).

As she tries to salvage the bar and renew a friendship with Flynn, old wounds are opened, and she finds herself falling for Flynn all over again, Faith turns to her halfwit sister for romantic advice with mixed results. Can either of them forget their past misdeeds and try to forge ahead by learning to trust each other?

Filled with a lot of longing on both sides, Kendrick does a great job of creating completing characters, injecting witty dialogue into every day situations, and making the reader feel like they are in the room with the characters.

4 out of 5 stars A charming debut.......2005-09-12

Given a choice, food columnist Faith Geary would rather be undergoing a root canal than be back home in Lindbrook, Minnesota. You see, ten years ago, Faith did a stupid thing. When her first and only true love proposed, Faith panicked and fled for California with another guy -- who actually ended up dumping her, but that's beside the point. Now, thanks to her sister Skye's convoluted love life and failing business (a bar in which Faith has invested all of her life's savings, thank you very much), big sister Faith is back in Lindbrook to fix the mess. Unfortunately, there's one little glitch in Faith's master plan. It seems Skye has a partner at the bar and his name is Patrick Flynn. The same Patrick Flynn Faith had unceremoniously dumped a decade ago. Welcome back, Faith.

It's immediately apparent that Flynn has not forgotten nor forgiven Faith for their break-up. But, interestingly enough, it's also obvious that he can't stay away from her, which is a good thing since they have to work together to save the bar and keep Skye out of trouble. Soon the sizzle is back and its time for Faith to stop running and face their past. Can she go home again?

Beth Kendrick's debut is a realistic look at the trials and tribulations of a modern day heroine, flaws and all. An intriguing blend of guilt complexes and wry humor, Faith is a career girl who once screwed over her prince charming, but is now determined to make things right and try for another shot at a happily ever after. While not as vividly brought to life as Faith, Flynn comes across as a wary man still hurting from his first love's rejection but not closed off to the idea of a reunion. The secondary characters are a riot and are lovingly detailed, including the irrepressibly flighty Skye, her laconic would-be swain Lars, Faith's former high school rival, Sally, and the various personalities in this quirky town. Charming and laugh out loud funny, MY FAVORITE MISTAKE will have you wishing to go home again too.

Book Description

Ten years ago, former special agent Cleo North ignored her gut instinct -- and a young sergeant wound up brutally murdered. Finally she is in a position to find out what went wrong.

Cleo is certain the official story -- a murder-suicide -- is wrong. Now she has a new assignment working with Major Jack Donovan and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, offering security to a pampered celebrity as a front for a terrorism fact-finding mission. At last she has access to the one man she's sure is involved in the decade-old murder.

But as Cleo is plunged into a tangle of violence and lies, she must quickly decide who the real victims are. And who's covering up a first deadly mistake.

The first of the exciting Cleo North Trilogy, THE FIRST MISTAKE draws readers into an exciting world of political intrigue, action-adventure, and passion with the first page. No one writes military romantic suspense as well as this former USAF Colonel, and THE FIRST MISTAKE doesn't disappoint!

For Cleopatra Aphrodite North, giving up a life as part of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations seemed to be the only choice she had left. After ignoring her sense that something wasn't right with a case involving a murder/suicide of Sergeant Debra Smith and Staff Sergeant Thomas Mitchell. Cleo is sure she botched the case, and that fact, along with her turmoil regarding paperwork and rules, forced her to trade in her uniform for a life of private investigations and security.

She hasn't regretted the fact that she left the Air Force, but she does regret never solving that one horrific case. When Major Jack Donovan suddenly shows up on the scene, asking for her help in a seven-burner investigation being overseen by her former commander, General Barnes, Cleo can't say no. But it's not for the reasons Jack might think-babysitting a cranky Tinseltown actress will provide the perfect smokescreen for Cleo to turn her sights on one Alexander Sloan, Colonel, USAF, Retired.

THE FIRST MISTAKE is military romantic suspense at its absolute best. Conspiracies, mysteries, action-adventure, and spine-tingling passion all come together to make this book a keeper. I can say with honesty, that after reading it, I immediately went and picked up The Middle Sin (Cleo North Trilogy), the next book in the trilogy, just to find out where Cleo ends up next. Not to mention what becomes of Alexander's twin brother Marc, and to find out how Jack is dealing with his alcoholic ex-wife, Kate. Kudos to Ms. Lovelace for dragging this reader into the intrigue!

.
Cleo North (Cleopatra Aphrodite North) resigned from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. In the AFOSI her first murder/suicide (Sergeant Debra Smith and Staff Sergeant Thomas Mitchell) just didn't seem conclusive, but she was a novice without the power to find the answers. Now she is a successful Private Investigator when Major Jack Donovan arrives with a military/hot tempered, tempestuous movie star project that is a seven-burner.

The label seven-burner has been declared by her former commander, General Barnes. There is no higher priority in the military. She wants to say "No!" to the General, yet there are extenuating circumstances - her requirements in order to take the job at all - that make her say yes.

The requested access clearances for this case opens the door to grant information about the first case, her first mistake. The assignment is to provide security for Marissa, an actress who has already nearly gotten Cleo killed in a previous duty.

However, because Cleo is thorough, professional, she is the only person Marissa will allow as her body guard. Marissa is in a role that could very well get her killed, and adds danger for anyone associated with her. Their relationship is snappy; truly one of the delights of the book.

I didn't know this was classified as a Romance when I purchased it - after I started reading however, I was glad that I had purchased next two in the trilogy at the same time. I spent about 5 or 6 days wandering through Cleo's world in this trilogy. Definitely, you want the whole set. Cleo and Jack are memorable characters, as are the others.

4 out of 5 stars Well written page turner!.......2006-02-27

If you like novels where the female is a butt-kicking, strong independant women then this book is worth the read. Cleo North's character comes alive as a strong woman determined to right a wrong. I would agree with the other reader above, the book is more action packed and focused on Cleo's mission, and less involved in developing the relationship between her and 2 male leads in this book. However there is more than enough sexual tension to keep the book sizzling and the author has done well in keeping readers guessing on how Cleo's relationships with either of the 2 men will pan out, and more of this is only revealed in her next book - The Middle Sin.

5 out of 5 stars A great start to the trilogy!.......2005-06-19

I became a fan of Lovelace after reading her Call of Duty. Though some of her other books were a hit and miss for me, I enjoyed her style enough to look out for any new titles.

When I read that The First Mistake has the romance continuing into the sequels, I wasn't too enthusiastic as I'm not one for long drawn-out relationships. Thankfully, my liking for the author's work won out as I found my purchase of her latest title was certainly not a mistake at all! This trilogy is going to be a keeper for me even though I've only read the first book (and will place an order for The Middle Sin if my bookstores haven't got it in yet!).

One word of caution - if you prefer your romantic suspense heavier on the romance, you could be disappointed as The First Mistake is heavier on the action and suspense. Since I prefer them this way, this book was a treat for me. To my surprise, I also found myself eagerly waiting to see what becomes of the second man in Cleo's life. Usually, the hero establishes himself in my mind as 'the one' for the heroine and every other man is an interloper but not so in this book. I found myself drawn to the other man (you'll have to find out who for yourself) from the start and it was the possibility of *this* romance developing that got me hooked, not the one Cleo had/has with Jack Donovan, the hero (or is he?) of the book. My suspicion that there was going to be more to the second man was confirmed when I read the preview pages of The Middle Sin. Since Jack is the hero, I am not expecting the other guy to end up with the girl but more's the pity as Cleo and Jack lacked chemistry as a couple whilst Cleo's encounter with the other guy sizzled from the start.

5 out of 5 stars Great Heroine.......2005-04-28

I really enjoyed this book. Cleo is a great character. The storyline flows nicely and keeps you engaged.

5 out of 5 stars Very nformative and interesting........1998-03-24

This book is very deceptive in its simplicity. It explains how errors can and do occur. The theme is 'if you know what can go wrong, you can do something about it'. Filled with examples of how simple (and not so simple) mistakes can happen and the sometimes tragic consequences. Excellent reading for managers, engineers and anyone interested in understanding and reducing errors- including the typo in the one line summary.

Book Description

There are hundreds of lives sown inside Pretty Little Mistakes, Heather McElhatton's singularly spectacular, breathtakingly unique novel that has more than 150 possible endings. You may end up in an opulent mansion or homeless down by the river; happily married with your own corporation or alone and pecked to death by ducks in London; a Zen master in Japan or morbidly obese in a trailer park.

Is it destiny or decision that controls our fate? You can't change your past and start over from scratch in real life—but in Pretty Little Mistakes, you can! But be warned, choose wisely.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great.......2007-09-16

I was looking forward to getting this book. I'd loved the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books when I was a child. This book was interesting...but boring at the same time. I was looking for some 'ooomph' that it failed to deliver and I was disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2007-09-15

A fun little (big) book to flip through and browse. I like the concept of an adult version of "choose your own adventure" but I found some of the twists a little contrived. Cute though, and a fun light read.

2 out of 5 stars crushing disappointment.......2007-08-02

I happily remember "Choose Your Own Adventure" books from my youth, so I was in love with the idea of such a novel for adults when I purchased this book. After reading it, however, I wouldn't recommend it to others. McElhatton claims to have written death into every ending in the novel in an attempt to keep the book "real." However, a combination of laughably un-"real" plots rule that possibility out before the inevitable deaths ever occur. There's nothing wrong with camp, but perhaps it's just that the novel doesn't know what it wants to be that causes it to miss any target mark. Among the problems:

(1) The pace of the novel is a big mismatch: all sections of the book seem to cover a span of perhaps several years at the most, until the final sections, which usually cover multiple decades of life with no possibility to make further choices. Since you never become emotionally enaged with the "you" protagonist, those summaries of entire lifetimes are dull to the point of irrelevance.

(2) Since the life choices are often so unrealistic, the lack of emotional connection with the second-person narrator also makes all choices you can make very random. Choosing well vs. badly loses meaning when you're not choosing as a persona with a defined personality.

(3) With the youth novels, some choices would lead to immediate endings, whereas others had plots that would grow and include many more choices, which kept things interesting. In this novel, if one choice leads to a final episode ending in death, the other possible choice also leads to a final episode ending in death. The act of making a choice seems almost irrelevant, since you can be guaranteed that you won't "make it any further" by choosing well (or even luckily).

(4) The repeated plot sections either seemed to be a heavy-handed insistance on "realism" again (different choices can sometimes lead to the same endings, I get it), or laziness in writing. Either way, since the only real thing this novel has going for it is a large array and variety of life possibilities, those fairly frequent repeated plots struck a sour note with me. Again, if I remember correctly, the youth novels did it better: when a bit of plot was shared among several sections, the repeated bit would be a separate section linked to from multiple places. When this novel reprints the same text in several different sections, it caused less of an amused "hey, I've been to this section before!" reaction in me, and more a "oh god, here we go again."

So, camp or realism? The novel can't be both and do it well. I do wish this novel had been better, because we're overdue our adult "Choose Your Own Adventure." Hopefully the next person to write one will do it better.

2 out of 5 stars Too many references to meth........2007-07-23

I bought this book on a recommendation from a magazine. Yes, the concept of many endings is great, but I was disappointed. I found a lot of references about making, selling and using crystal meth. This is definately not a book for the younger crowd. Now, I am a liberal adult in my 30s,and I believe in free speech, but just be careful.

2 out of 5 stars not so pretty mistake.......2007-07-16

This concept for this book was intriguing but the result was depressing. Yes, I did have some good outcomes but most were depressing and outright scary at times. I realize life can be complicated but this these endings were often ridiculous. Death by an apple! Where have we heard that before? Hopefully someone will do over the great "choose your adventure" for adults with a little more playfulness and a lot less grit.
