Book Description
At last, a relationship book for lesbians that tells it like it is . . .
The journey from sexual curiosity to finally coming out can be confusing without proper guidance and empowering role models. In Same Sex in the City, Lauren Levin and Lauren Blitzer provide women -- gay, straight, and bi-curious alike -- with firsthand insight into the advantages and challenges of being a lesbian. In prose that is at once honest and uplifting, the Laurens relate their own experiences and those of the women they interview, as well as offer serious advice, titillating anecdotes, and a positive attitude for girls who know they're gay -- and for those who are wondering about their sexuality but are not yet sure whether their Prince Charming is really a Cinderella.
Part confessional, part informational, Same Sex in the City covers the gamut of lesbian life -- from dating to heartbreak, and from hooking up with straight chicks to raising a family. It's the book that millions of women have been searching for -- a relationship guide that will help every woman come to terms with and celebrate her sexuality, whatever it may be.

Could NOT put this thing down!.......2006-08-22
I was up until the wee hours of the morning for three nights in a row--this book is a page-turner. I'm not gay (that's what they all say, but four beers later...), so the dating info wasn't really helpful to me, except in a fascinating, peek-through-the-keyhole kind of way. The narratives were riveting: two on Chanukah cruises in the Caribbean, threesomes gone bad, raw and real stories about coming out and breaking up, and hilarious, read aloud anecdotes about dating, bar-hopping, and "going in for the kill." I was sad to read about the parents crying over their beautiful gay girls and glad to see them come around. I've already recommended this book to half a dozen people--you don't have to be gay to fall in love with it.
Very Informative!.......2006-08-18
I really enjoyed this book, and it helped me realize that the feelings that I've been having toward women for the majority of my life are common and lots of other females have been in the same boat as me. The only semi-negative message I got from the book was "pretty popular girls can be lesbians, too".
It's just a collection of people's stories..........2006-07-25
Not only is this book, that is authored by TWO people, unaffecting, it's not even really written by them. They've got an intro in every chapter, and that's basically it. It's a collection of people's stories. That is something that should appear in GoNYC magazine, not in a book. This is the first of it's kind, and I expected it to move me. It's not informative and it's not different. It's full of cliche's and there's even a rip of a dashboard song. "Turning to you is like falling in love when you're 10." If you're going to have most of your book written for you by real people, at least have what you write be REAL and YOURS. Even Greg Behrendt's "It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken" is more effective than this. This is the book that stereotypes are made of.
Just what I've been waiting for..........2006-07-20
I want to thank the authors and the wonderful women who contributed their stories to this book. When I came out several years ago, it was a scary time as I had the same stereotypical views of what a lesbian was as the next person. I was unsure of myself and even more scared that I would never find people like me, which is to say a femme girl who happens to like femme girls. Through the years, I have discovered that this world does indeed exist. In a way, this book has reinforced to me just how many of us there are out there and it will give the rest of society a chance to see into this cross-section of the lesbian world. It was so great to read so many of these stories and know exactly how these women were feeling and what they were thinking. It has also been a great way to get my friends and family to better understand exactly where i'm coming from. Thank you again for this great book!!
Outstanding Novel.......2006-06-03
This book is nothing short of marvelous. For a mid-western lesbian "outcast" i learned everything i need to know about lesbian life style, and felt good about it! Not only do the authors boost a gal's self esteem, but the how to guide's couldn't be more on point! Every straight, bi, gay or curious girl should have a copy! It's also the perfect gift for a gay woman to give to her straight friends and family to understand what a she is going through in the coming out experience, as well as lesbian lifestyle. You go girls!

Book Description
Bestselling author Julie Garwood's classic love story is filled with "the humor, the sweetness, and the sensuality" (Publishers Weekly) that have made her "a trusted brand name in romantic fiction" (People).
Only her beloved grandmother, Lady Esther, knew how devastated Taylor Stapleton had been when her fiancé eloped with Taylor's cousin. Now dear Esther -- one of London's richest and most formidable matriarchs -- lies dying. But first she was going to help Taylor pull off the scam of the season.
To escape becoming a ward of her unscrupulous uncle, Taylor would wed Lucas Ross, a rugged American rancher. Lady Esther's money would enable Ross to return home to Montana. Taylor had her own urgent reason to go to America...a precious legacy she hadn't revealed to Ross, for they had agreed to part ways once they reached Boston. But as her handsome new husband spoke of life in Montana, Taylor began planning a new future. To Taylor, the wide-open spaces of Montana sounded like paradise....

Wonderful characters and Great Read!.......2007-08-06
This book has a different setting (mostly USA) when compared to other Garwood novels and that works out well. All the characters are beautifully developed and the hero is very good. I like Garwood's heroes better than McNaught's. They are reliable, protective and definitely not mean.
Any Garwood fan would definitely love this book.
Not bad.......2007-05-29
Not one of the best, but then I find most of Garwood's books cheesy and sappy, but pretty entertaining. This one was pretty hot, the hero was damned sexy, and the scenes with the children were pretty sweet.
Note-some people mentioned that Taylor shouldn't have had the twins calling her "Mama", but "Aunt." I disagree. Considering they were only two, that MIGHT have geen a bit confusing. Later on, she could simply tell them that their first mother had been her sister.
And I don't think adopting Daniel/David/Michael was such a bad thing, either. Poor kid was desparate for a family.
Good story, slow reading.......2007-05-15
This story was good, but very slow reading. It took forever for the story to get going. Don't get for an easy, weekend read.
"Virtue is bold, and goodness never fearful".......2007-04-26
Ms Garwood is "the" absolute best writer of all time in my opinion. This woman "Throws Down"! I am partial to many other authors, but Ms Garwood is my favorite! Anything with her name on it is going to give you a fantastic reading experience. I have read almost all of her books and each one has been a super page turner. Her wit will have you laughing out loud and her characters in each book become so familiar they're almost real. In Prince Charming there are a number of quotes from Shakespeare (who I am a big fan of) that are integrated so appropriately throughout the story and enhances the endearment of the story. A number of issues that are so relevant today are woven so powerfully into a wonderful love story that starts in England between Lucas Ross and Taylor Stapleton and then transports them to America due to Taylor's grandmother's (Madam) "grand plan" to protect her granddaughter and great twin granddaughters.
I wish any one of Ms Garwood's stories would be put on film like Jane Austen's stories (who I am also a big fan of). Once you read anything by Ms Garwood, you will automatically become addicted to her books and will want to consume each and every one of them.
Julie Garwood, "You Go Girl"!
Truly, A Prince Among Men.......2005-11-14
I am a new Julie Garwood fan. This was the first of her novels that I read. Since then I have read "The Bride" and "The Wedding". Even though the other two books were highly enjoyable, Prince Charming in my estimation was the better. I just recently read it again. Initially the reader may have wondered why the book was entitled Prince Charming. However as the story went on, Lucas was revealed as a true "Prince" among men. He wasn't a man of high birth, he didn't possess wealth, and he wasn't a man who courted notoriety. Indeed, he was of the lowest birth, a bastard, he wasn't a man of means, and he ran from fame. However, his character was of the highest a human being could achieve, and he never wanted to be given praise, achieve fame,or wealth for any of his acheivements. Through divine intervention, he met the perfect match, Taylor, aristocrat. A person who had so many of the same character traits. How could he not fall in love with her even though he deemed himself unworthy. I loved the title. The moral of the story, it's not a person's station in life that tells you the worthiness of an individual. It is truly the character that matters. There was a second romance in the story between Hunter and Victoria. He too was a Prince among men.

On the eve of his 30th birthday, Crown Prince Raffaele Giancarlo Ettore di Fiore feels more like a prisoner than a prince. With his every wish granted and no real work required of him, Rafe is bored. Fate intervenes when his coach is set upon by The Masked Rider, a mysterious highwayman adored by the common folk for his Robin Hood ways. Rafe foils the bandit's attack only to later discover that he's unmasked a lovely young noblewoman. Lady Daniela Chiaramonte is as strong-willed and brave as she is beautiful and when she's drawn into Rafe's world of luxury and power, she becomes an invaluable ally in the storm of events that threaten his once predictable life. With an unknown assassin plotting against the royal family, Rafe's wit, courage, and endurance is tested beyond reason. Perhaps no one but Rafe and Daniela believe that he can save the kingdom; in the end, even the powerful prince might not be able to save the woman he loves.
Convoluted political intrigue, an evil villain, trusty companions, and a fascinating hero and heroine make this action-filled romance an entertaining finish for the trilogy that began with The Pirate Prince and continued with Princess. --Lois Faye Dyer

Best romance book ever!!!.......2007-02-14
I love this book... I have read it at least 15 times. I love how Dani is bad yet innocent at the same time. And for once the man is head over heals for the women instead of the other way around. The two were meant for each other. They both had notorious backgrounds and they were just so good for each other. The only problem was there wasn't enough love scenes with them. But still it is the best romance book I have read yet.. and I wish there were more books like this one with the girl being bad and the guy a rake. I would of given the book a 10....love it wish it never ended.
Fantastic series, and a great conclusion with Prince Charming.......2007-01-03
The entire series was great, and I highly recommend reading all of them in order. (They can be read out of order, but the conclusion of this third book felt more like a conclusion to the entire series, not just the book, so that is why I recommend reading the books in order.) I think this book was my favorite of the three. The story is pure fun and fantasy, and takes place on the make believe isle of Asencion. It's fast paced and very sexy. Before Prince Rafe finds himself in charge of the kingdom when the King leaves the island for a few months, he apprehends the notorious and well loved Masked Rider. A Robin Hood type hero, the MR steals from the pompous rich and gives to the deserving poor. After realizing the Masked Rider is a feisty woman who stirs his blood like no other, Rafe uses his new found authority to save her from the gallows and demand she becomes his wife. Rafe soon learns that things are easier said than done, and leading a kingdom proves to be full of challenges for our dear hero. There are murder plots, power struggles, and humorous exploits abound. Rafe's character evolves into a true hero, one any princess-to-be would be proud to call husband. Gaelen Foley is a brilliant author of historical romances, and hands down one of my favorites. I've read everything she has published to date, and highly recommend any and all of her books.
Not my favorite of the trilogy.......2007-01-02
I loved the Pirate Prince and can't imagine a strong character like Lazar having such a deadbeat for a son. I realize he comes around by the end of the book, but he's had thirty years prior to that to make a mark. He lives lavishly, yet much of Ascencion is still not thriving. He whines about not ruling, yet doesn't do much else. Is there nothing else for him to do on this island while he waits for this father to die? My biggest turn off with this character was the seduction scene with Dani at his birthday blow-out. He was knowingly seducing a virgin, locking her in the room and his dialogue...(I felt like I was 21 and back at the bars listening to deadbeats try to pick me up). I just can't believe this guy. Dani was ok, except how she swoons so quickly for him after his "proposal". One minute she is scared for her life and that of her friends and the next she is sailing the coast having a grand time. A strong woman with her character would have shown some maturity.
All in all, this isn't a bad book, just not a great romance. If you love Pirate Prince, you might not care for this.
Entertaining and fast paced.......2006-08-24
I think I liked this story better than its prequel, Princess. Rafael is an enigmatic character, plagued with a rakish reputation that he has, thus far, lived up to, and yet is yearning for something that he knows not what. He knows what it is when he meets Daniela because she is the epitome of innocence; an innocence that was stolen from Rafe at the age of nineteen when his blind devotion to a traitorous lover nearly cost his family to lose control of Ascension. He, nor anyone in Ascension, has ever forgotten his terrible blunder.
At the time when he discovers that his father is dying, Rafe meets Daniela when she, posed as the Masked Rider, tries to rob him on his way to the capital. Rafe immediately knows she is what he has been looking for all his life. For Daniela, it takes a bit longer. In order to escape the hangman's noose, Daniela agrees to marry Rafe but a cousin's treacherous meddling prevents Daniela from allowing her marriage to be consummated.
This cousin, Orlando, wants more than just Daniela for himself. He wants the throne and has spent years executing his carefully thought out plan to eliminate every male in line for the throne.
I think the storyline is really good and did keep my interest until the very end. The ending, however, was a bit lacking. The Epilogue didn't have any dialogue in it and was too abrupt. Overall this is a book I'd recommend for reading if you haven't a better one to peruse.
It takes a hellion to reform a rake, and a rake to tame a hellion.......2006-08-04
Lady Daniela Chiaramonte masquerades as a highwayman called the Masked Rider in order to gain money to pay the taxes on her lands and feed the people on her land. She is basically a Robin Hood who steals from the rich members of Prince Rafael di Fiore's entourage to aid her poor tenants. What she doesn't expect is that one night she will actually wind up robbing Prince Rafe the Rake himself and have to face the consequences.
After enjoying The Duke so much, I couldn't wait to get another Gaelen Foley book I liked this book, but not as much as The Duke. There wasn't as great a sense of urgency during the climactic ending as in the other book, though I liked the characters equally as much. Rafe the Rake has a roguish air about him that only Daniela could tame and it was a nice touch to have her be a little bad as well. Foley has a way with words that allows you to actually connect with her characters so that you actually care what happens to them.
I picked up this book without realizing it was part of a series. The first two books in the series are The Pirate Prince and Princess, respectively. I had no problems reading the books out of order, but look forward to going back and reading the stories of the other members of the di Fiore clan.

Romance readers everywhere, celebrate! Bestselling author Teresa Medeiros's new novel, Charming the Prince, is here and it's phenomenal! Medeiros's trademark humor and potent love scenes will enchant audiences once again with the introduction of Sir Bannor the Bold, a rough-hewn warrior who battled the French dauntlessly for 14 years. But Bannor's deepest secret is that he is terrified of his 12 (count 'em, 12) motherless children who have run wild for years, tormenting the residents of his keep. At his wit's end, the exhausted lord dispatches his man to find a new wife to manage his brood, hopefully without adding to it. Bannor seeks a woman who is everything his children are not--quiet, biddable, and well-behaved. And preferably "some maternal, bovine creature who will prove to be no temptation to my appetites," he specifies. Instead, he finds himself wed by proxy to Lady Willow Mallory, a slender, raven-haired beauty who has played unpaid and unappreciated nursemaid to her numerous step- and half-siblings for years. From an inauspicious beginning, Bannor and Willow struggle to forge a relationship, first with his estranged offspring and finally with each other. By the time he learns that love isn't a sickness of the heart, Bannor must rescue Willow from the clutches of a covetous admirer. Teresa Medeiros continues her history of successes; you won't be able to put Charming the Prince down! --Alison Trinkle
Book Description
He never lost a battle until he met the one woman who might succeed in...
Charming the Prince.
Dear Reader,
My enemies know me as Lord Bannor the Bold, Pride of the English and Terror of the French. Never in my life have I backed down from any challenge or betrayed so much as a hint of fear--until the war ended and I found myself a reluctant papa to a dozen unruly children.
Realizing that I couldn't lop their little heads off or throw them in the dungeon, I sent my steward out to find them a mother and me a bride--an attractive, meek, maternal creature too plain to tempt me to get her with child. You can imagine my horror when he returned with Lady Willow of Bedlington, a spirited beauty who made me think of nothing else!
With her cloud of dark curls and the sparkle of passion in her eyes, Willow was everything I'd sworn to resist. I never dreamed she would join forces with those mischievous imps of mine to teach this cynical warrior just how sweet surrender can be.
Bannor the Bold,
Lord of Elsinore

Charming the Prince.......2007-07-09
This was a good read. I was done in a day. The characters were well developed and I really liked the story.
Great Cinderella Story but so much more.......2007-05-22
This was such an enjoyable read that I couldn't put it down. The story moved along beautifully from beginning to end. I was captivated by this marvelous Cindrella story. It was such a rollicking tale with well defined characters. I loved the H/H, they were so endearing. Not an over abundance of sex scenes, but tastfully done.
This was my first read of Teresa Medeiros but it certainly won't be my last.
Pretty Good.......2007-05-17
This was one of the better books. The story was entertaining, with humor and interesting characters.Worth reading.
Charming the Prince is relaxing and enjoyable.......2007-05-07
I don't know about you, but I'm a book hog. The books I love, and even some I didn't, I just have to keep. I'll buy a second one to give away before I'll part with a favorite. One of these days perhaps I'll count the number of paperbacks I have, but not today. On Friday I grabbed a book off my shelf and read a book I've read before. There is something about rereading a book you enjoy that is comforting.
Charming the Prince is an older title. It was published by Bantam in 1999. It's a fun historical romance. The hero, Lord Banner the Bold, is naturally strong, passionate, and in this case, particularly kind. He has nine children and no idea how to raise them. Enter Willow, the lovely daughter of a nobleman. Her history has a strong Cinderella backdrop. She was the sole daughter until her father remarried. The new mother had several children and Willow was shoved aside and made to care for them. She is tired of children and isn't particularly fond of them, however, through some brief observation Banner's vassal decides Willow would be perfect as the new mother for Banner's troop of children.
It's not an overly complex plot line. There isn't much for intrique or mystery. The characters are fun and entertaining. The relationship is built quickly and strongly (as is often the case in these historical romance titles). It's one that I enjoyed reading the first time and I enjoy reading it periodically when I'm in the mood for a relaxing and pleasant story. Teresa Medeiros is an author I tend to look for when I am browsing through the romance section. I like her writing style.
Charming, delightful and funny.......2007-05-04
My first Teresa Medeiros novel, and I couldn't be more pleased. The book is just too charming and witty to not love. I was reminded of the classic fairytale Cinderella and the classic movie Sound of Music throughout the novel, but the novel still managed to maintain a fresh, original appeal.
The novel's heart and soul belongs with our witty yet resilient heroine, Willow. It begins with a child Willow looking forward to a new mother only to find out she's a cruel stepmother with a horde of children of her own. A child's dream of being loved by a mother vanishes in a heartbeat along with her own father's favor since his new wife brings money to their impoverished castle and estates.
Willow grows up as little more than a servant and nurse for her stepsisters and stepbrothers. She's bent, but not broken, and still dreams of a prince rescuing her from her beleaguered condition.
Lord Bannor the Bold, favored by the King of England, seeks a plump, unattractive yet caring mother for his estranged 10 children who harass and annoy him daily. He doesn't want anymore children of his own, so resolves to seek an unattractive lady. When he sends out his vassal in search of this lady, they bring back a beautiful Willow, who defies her father and resolves to marry a man she has not seen just to escape her situation. Instead of finding a prince to love, she finds 10 children she must care for as a nursemaid and once again her dreams are shattered.
The charming yet hilarious story really takes off there as a kind, witty and resilient Willow captures the hearts of not only Bannor's children but Bannor as well.
I do have some complaints.
SPOILERS ahead.
I thought Willow should have been more assertive about having children of her own. She says she doesn't want to have her own children, but she gives in to Bannor about this point too easily.
I also thought the ending could have been better crafted, it left something to be desired as Medeiros inserted other romances without having much to show between the lead pair.
I was actually looking for more scenes between Willow and Banner's children, but it seemed we got all too little of that.
Finally, it ended too quickly! I wanted more of Willow, and I wanted to see the second wedding between Bannor and Willow confirming their vows in front of Willow's family.
But oh well, a thoroughly entertaining and charming read nonetheless.

More of a Pep Talk than useful information.......2007-01-14
I expected this book to have more information. I expected to learn more about finances. The entire first half of the book is just a pep talk, saying that women need to learn more about money (I know I need to learn more about money; that's why I bought a book I thought would teach me something). The second half finally offers some useful advice, but still the short of it is: Do Research! (I know I should do research; that's why I'm reading books). There are a few notable pointers here and there, but you really have to dig. They are so in the middle of pep talk and testimonials about feelings that they could be easy to gloss over.
The Only Book I Refuse to Lend Out.......2006-04-25
I ordered this book a year ago, then took about six months to get around to reading it. Wow - just proves her point that money wasn't a subject I felt comfortable even thinking about, and now I wish I'd read it sooner. This book has absolutely changed my way of thinking and, thank heavens, my life. After two failed engagements, I found myself in a financial morass I thought I'd never escape. This book helped me feel less stupid, more empowered, and very rah-rah-get-going. It helped me understand my thinking well enough to begin to change it, and by understanding I don't mean realizing I was making mistakes, but the reasons WHY I was making them. I now recommend this book to every single woman I know (single or otherwise), refuse to lend my own copy (I re-read bits each week) and am working my way towards a balanced investment portfolio. BTW, my prince has come along and he thinks it's sexy that I am financially independent -- I wouldn't have been so attractive if I were the 'old' financial me.
If it's so motivational . . ........2006-03-29
Why aren't this author's books available in an audio format? I'm too busy working my behind off to be a voracious book reader. I appreciate using my commute time (no matter the destination) to feed my brain. A big part of motivation is in the voice.
This book is wonderful.......2004-12-29
I found Barbara Stanny through David Bach's (*The Automatic Millionaire*) recommended reading list, and I'm pretty sure her books are changing my life. Ignore the whiners who complain "There's not enough investment advice in this book!" because that's not what *Prince Charming Isn't Coming* is about--and it's not at all what it *claims* to be about. It's about realizing that YOU, and only YOU, are in charge of your financial life, and that controlling your money and owning your future is actually much easier, more gratifying and less trouble than NOT enriching your life and understanding your money. Barbara Stanny is like an Abraham Lincoln for women--she sets us free. Her communication style is impeccable, and I want to give a copy of her--okay, her books--to everyone I know. HIGHLY recommended.
Recommend this one!.......2003-12-23
This book was fun to read and inspiring. I'd recommend it for any woman, (and a few men I know) who need to get their arms around the whole money issue. I'm about to buy her newest book. Hope it's just as good!
Book Description
“Money may not be able to buy you love, but conflicts about it can certainly bankrupt your relationship.”
–Michelle Singletary
Here at last is the lowdown on how to manage your finances with the man in your life. Money is the #1 problem couples fight about, says beloved Washington Post financial columnist Michelle Singletary. Acknowledging that most fights about money are usually about something else–like feelings of fear or resentment–Singletary stresses the value of open dialogue. In her trademark no-holds-barred style, she shows us how to handle the entire range of financial issues couples face–from splitting the dinner bill when dating to planning for retirement together after years of marriage.
Singletary speaks to the hearts of women as they try to successfully merge their money and future security with those of their man. Acknowledging the emotional weight of shared investments, she brings her own experience as a wife and mother to the table and doles out advice in a voice that, while encouraging and rational, is never less than frank on tough topics.
From sizing up a potential mate’s financial responsibility (or lack thereof) to figuring out how best to share bank accounts and expenses once you’ve made the leap, to determining how to teach your children about money, Your Money and Your Man focuses on the undeniable role that finance plays in every stage of a long-term relationship.
Including typical questions from readers of her syndicated column and advice from one of the savviest financial experts she has ever known–her grandmother–Singletary shows women that they can live happily ever after with Prince Charming, even if he doesn’t have a royal bank account!

Average, same old information.......2007-06-10
This book is a fine introduction to personal finance. If you already know the basics, then this probably isn't for you. The author lost me when she starting quoting the Bible though. If you are a conservative Christian, run, don't walk to pick up this book that I found at Walmart (how telling). If you don't want someone moralizing to you about marriage in a finance book, maybe you should look elsewhere.
About money and relationships.......2007-03-09
Michelle Singletary is a columnist for The Washington Post. She started "The Color of Money" column in March 1997. In 2003, she published her first book, 7 Money Mantras For A Richer Life: How To Live Well With The Money You Have. The paperback of the book was retitled, Spend Well, Live Rich. Her second book, Your Money and Your Man: How You and Prince Charming Can Spend Well and Live Rich, was released Jan. 31, 2006, both published by Random House.
As always, I found Michelle Singletary's writing style pleasant to read and easy to understand. If the reader has little or no prior knowledge of finances, especially with regards to marriage, than this might be a good first start. However, if the reader already has a library of basic financial books, this one is a little redundant.
In this her third book, she divided her advice into sections that help at different stages: dating, marriage, when children arrive, divorce)--and learning to talk about money with someone you intend to marry--and finding your "money compatibility." Fighting over money is still the number one problem in most marriages.
I did find her decade-by-decade list of money milestones to be very interesting and useful. Be aware that this book is filled with Bible quotes and is very conservative. For instance, Singletary suggests that having separate bank accounts is leaving a way out of marriage--instead of simply stating the pros and cons of separate vs. combined incomes.
This is a wide-ranging book, covering everything from dating, planning the wedding, marriage, children, straight through to divorce or separation. Unfortunately, there was nothing in this book that I hadn't read in several other books, with the exception of the money milestones, which while not new, were put together in an interesting way.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a basic book of finances for those with a conservative, religious point-of-view who are considering or newly married, this book might be helpful. If, however, you have already read several basic finance books, this book might not have much that is new.
Armchair Interview says: If you've read no other book about money and relationships, this has good info for you.
Preachy Right-Wing Christian with Mediocre Money Advice.......2007-03-06
If you're a right wing Christian, and a money novice, you'll probably love this book. However, I wish I'd spent my money on a different couples' finance book.
Don't be fooled by the hip title and cool cover. There are a few nuggets of decent financial advice in here, but you have to wade through Singletary's Dark Ages social-conservative propaganda and Bible verses to get to it, and it's really annoying if you're not so inclined.
Even more troublesome is the fact that some of her money advice seems to be based on her right-wing "values" rather than on sound financial reasoning. (For example, I learned from Michelle's book that couples who maintain separate checking accounts are just keeping open an easy "out" for a future divorce. Thanks, Michelle, for your opinion, but I'd prefer to know the financial and logistical pros and cons of separate or joined or partially joined finances.)
Tips for ultra-conservatives only!.......2006-09-06
I bought this book, with the interest of hearing the author's thoughts on being financially responsible. I was quite excited to learn some common-sense approaches to handling my money well. However, I returned the book after stumbling across numerous references to ultra-conservative organizations, and reading the author's tirade about how children should only be raised by both a loving mother and father.
The financial info was decent, at best. But, it was completely eclipsed by the author's thinly-veiled messages about Christianity, the greatness of the church, and how healthy kids can only be raised by both a mother and father. And, that was all within the first 20 pages!
What does any of that have to do with financial tips and advice?!
Michelle talking about this book on the radio.......2006-03-06
Here is a link to Michelle talking about this book on the Diane Rehm show on NPR for those who would like to know more. I enjoyed her common sense, funny, yet no-nonsense attitude.

At Long Last, Prince Charming Has Been Found.......2006-08-10
Donna Kauffman's DEAR PRINCE CHARMING chronicles the escapades of a straight-laced publicist as she tries to pull off the biggest hoax in the world of magazine publishing. Valerie Wagner is a slave to fashion, obsessed with the glossy pages of fashion magazines since her elementary school years. She spent most of her life attempting to establish a career related to fashion, sampling in everything from modeling to serving as an assistant to fashion magazine editors. She doesn't find her niche in this realm until she acts her way into a position as the publicist for Glass Slipper, a periodical soon to be launched. Having just landed the elusive Prince Charming, a reknown relationship advice columnist who exposes the inner thinkings of males to women, as the spokesperson for the magazine, Valerie feels she is on top of the world. However, she takes a mighty stumble when she discovers Prince Charming has a secret that might damage Glass Slipper's reputation before its big debut. With the real Prince Charming out, Valerie has no other choice but to accept a stand-in.
The only man brave enough to dare take the place of Prince Charming is Jack Lambert. A man's man, Jack is as far from the proverbial white knight as a person can be. As a sportswriter with a haunted past and a fear of commitment, he is no Prince Charming.
Or is he?
That is the question that Donna Kauffman sets out to answer in this entertaining tale about finding Mr. Right (or Wrong) at the wrong time. I did not find this novel very funny, but I still liked it. The strength of this book lies in its two main characters--Valerie and Jack. They are not your typical romance hero and heroine, so if you are looking for a swooning love story, you might want to look elsewhere. Valerie and Jack develop an almost instantaneous attraction to one another when they first meet, but being two career-oriented people with paths leading in opposite directions, they resist the idea of pursuing a relationship. This hesitation allows Kauffman to develop the two characters as individuals. Valerie is a workaholic who enjoys having control over all aspects of her life and who knows how to take care of herself. However, Kauffman gives her a softer and more vulnerable side, so I found that I could easily relate to Valerie. Jack has typical journalistic traits--sharp, aggressive, and slightly impulsive. He also has a playful nature, which shines in his interactions with Valerie. They always banter when in a room together and try to push each other's buttons, especially Jack. He and Valerie, being two smart characters, choose to participate throughout the novel in a form of foreplay composed of dialogue and intellect. This proved to be a nice break from the "love at first sight" idea that other romance stories center on.
However, this book was not without its flaws. I didn't really like the three "godmothers," the women who own and run Glass Slipper, Inc. I found them to be over-the-top and annoying. Also, this story is told from both Valerie's and Jack's points of view in third person. While I enjoyed being able to see both sides of the relationship, I felt that Kauffman does not have enough "room" or time to fully develop the two characters. In my opinion, most of the character development relies telling rather than showing. Kauffman seemingly skims over Valerie's and Jack's pasts, which obviously have influence over their present actions and personalities. I would have appreciated more in-depth details about their pasts. Nevertheless, I was still able to get the gist of their personalities and enjoy the book.
Dear Prince Charming, indeed.......2005-12-22
Loved every moment of the book. it is such a page turner because of the witty lines and that you are really hoping Jack and Valerie would get together already! Loved it!
I read the Cinderella Rules first and enjoyed that extremely and then once i found out that Donna Kauffman wrote another book with Glass Slipper, Inc. I simply had to read it! Donna Kauffman is a great writer.
Happy Reading!!
Charming says it all.......2005-04-11
Valerie Wagner is a publicist hired to launch a new magazine published by the Glass Slipper Godmothers (of "Cinderella Rules" fame). Her major coup is an exclusive column penned by internet dating guru, Prince Charming, who provides the viewpoint of guys (and actually understands women!) to her loyal readership, despite managing to remain anonymous all these years.
Upon the launch of his column, Eric, aka as the Prince, is in turmoil. He has harbored a secret for many years (even his best friend does not know about it). After telling Valerie he cannot go through with it and her demanding to know why, he reveals that he is gay and in search of his own Mr. Right. He decides that all is not lost, and enlists his best friend, Jack to step up as the face of Prince Charming, while Eric will continue to pen the column.
Unlucky in love and work, with a trail of broken relationships and dreams in his wake, Jack is reluctant, but wants to help his friend. Despite disliking Valerie from the start, he's shocked when he starts to develop feelings for her and isn't sure if he wants to take the risk to act on them. After his makeover, Valerie too starts to fall for the "face" of Prince Charming.
Kauffman's sizzling and sensuous fractured fairytale is a cut above her dismal Cinderella failure, as she redeems herself with this twist on a contemporary prince. But is it just me or are those "godmothers" annoying as heck?
Kauffman has made me a fan.......2005-01-06
With each book I read of this authors I grow to adore her writing more and more. The first book I ever read by her was The Cinderella Rules, I am a big contemporary fairy tale fan, and I just thought it was great. Then I come across another Glass Slipper, Inc adventure and it was in my pile of have to reads.
Valerie has been obsessed with fashion since she was 9 years old, and has held every job under the sun when it comes to the world of fashion. So she lands herself a job as PR for a new fashion mag, and she scores the coup of the century only to have it it unravel at the seams a couple of days before the magazine launch.
This story follows her mishaps and misunderstandings as she learns that Prince Charming isn't always Princely and isn't always Charming.
Highly recommended chic lit fun.
I read a different book than these reviewers..........2004-12-23
It took me for ever to read this book, I started before having surgery in September, I finished last night (12/22). I kept wondering when it was going to end, because I was determined to finish this book. I wasn't hooked until about page 240 or later and the sex scene was worth the half of the book's price. I loved the ending, both because it was good and because it was finally over.

Needs More Emotion.......2007-01-04
The first Jennifer Ashley book I read was THE MAD, BAD DUKE - the sequel to this story featuring Grand Duke Alexander and Meagen Tavistock - and I knew from the start that this book would start with a strong sexual attraction, and magic-induced love at first sight.
But there could have been so much more.
When Imperial Prince Damien of Nvengaria goes to Little Marching, England to find the princess to fulfill the prophecy that will restore him to his throne, he is immediately entralled with and strongly attracted to Penelope Trask, who he does not know is the woman he's been looking for. After almost seducing her in a meadow, Damien is in alt to discover that sensuous Penelope is the woman fate has tied him to.
Penelope, at first, is not so excited. She loves her calm peaceful life, and does not believe that after the spell wears off she will be the answer to Prince Damien's dreams. Damien, however, quickly conquers her fears and they are betrothed, bedded, and then married by English law very soon after. (In Nvengaria, betrothed couples are expected to mate before the wedding because they have already binded their lives together.)
The story was cute, but I didn't feel much emotion - besides desire - between the two characters. There was never any doubt in Damien's mind that he would have Penelope, and it would have been good to see such an arrogant man shaken up a little.
And, I can honestly say this is one of the kinkiest romance novels I've ever read - of those that were sold as strictly romance and not erotic romance. Reader beware, some of the scenes are not for those expecting a sweet confirmation of love or even a sensual, earthy act of possession. No, indeed, I was shocked to see some of this mentioned, because I had never run across it in romance before, and especially not in a historical. Though I believe firmly in pushing the envelopes, some of these should have stayed closed until it found the story it needed. It seemed grossly out of place and almost lewd, and I do not consider myself a prude in any sense of the word.
Not a keeper, but a quick read that will make you smile (and probably sweat).
Romantic blunders abound.......2006-11-26
I had a difficult time enjoying this book because the two protagonists were torn between personas. It's clear the author wants us to enjoy more than a bit of fantasy (the story contains shape-shifting creatures, sleep spells and travel-thwarting summer snowstorms, among other things) in P&PC; however, Prince Damien "shape shifts" himself from careless womanizer in the prologue to a sensitive, love sick puppy the second he meets Penelope. And speaking of which, Penolope is introduced as a young woman who is a fun friend but sensible and intelligent enough to buck convention and turn down what would have been two disastrous marriages, as well as translate stories from another language. As soon as she meets the prince, though, she turns into a silly, lust-driven maid.
(I know, I know: the magic of the prophecy changed them!)
As muddled as the reader may get working their way through the fantasy factor of this book there is no mistaking the reality of the sexual encounters. No details were spared (after he has a tryst in the prologue, Ms. Ashley writes of Damien "He absently brushed dried patches of cream from his skin...") and Penelope morphs from a proper young virgin to a sex-crazed lover in just a few short pages. There is also a scene between P&PC at the Prince Regent's dwelling that puts this book (for me) in the XXX category -- the sexuality is quite frank.
I think I would have enjoyed this book more if the sexual encounters had been woven into an equally real story for the protagonists. Or if the story of the prophecy and all of the accompanying magic and been written with a love story that was not so overt and raw.
Charming, really..........2006-07-22
Damian is the Prince of Nvengaria and years ago his father banished him from his country when he was still a little boy. Years later, Damian has dragged himself out of the pits of poverty and has made a name for himself in royal courts across the continent and has earned his own money. Now his father, The Imperial Prince, has died and Damian returns to his beloved country to begin the slow process of healing after years under the cruel dictatorship of The Imperial Prince. The only problem is that the Grand Duke, Alexander, has the country firmly in hand and refuses to let the spawn of The Imperial Prince drive what is left of Nvengaria under his boot.
Squeezed between the Austrian Empire, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire, Nvengaria believes in the deeep magic and prophecy that the country is founded on. All signs of the prophecy indicate that it is time for Damian to find the lost princess from Prince Augustus the First. Finding and marrying her will reforge the bond of the original two princes of Nvengaria and the country will prosper again. Penelope is believed to be the female descendant from the Augustus lineage and once Damian tracks her down in the small, remote village of Little Marching, all he has to do is convince her to marry him and get her back across the country and in Nvengaria by Midsummer's Day.
I liked it but boy did I get a surprise! Okay, sure, it said on the back that the book included wild magic, but I didn't think that mean it was a paranormal!
**Warning to historical readers--as much as this book is a historical, it contains prophesies, mages, seeing into the future, magic and demons that take human form**
I like the characters Penelope and Damien. They were well created/developed and their dialogue was realistic. I felt Penelope put up the perfect amount of resistance against Damien and his arguments were always sound and believable. The sex and almost sex scenes were hot.
The only thing I would have liked to see was more of Nvengaria. I didn't think they were ever going to get there! By page 200 the betrothal rituals and obstacles started to feel really drawn out.
Penelope.......2006-04-26
Penelope has resigned herself to a life without romance, then a handsome stranger accosts her, asking for directions, and everything changes. The stranger is none other than the most sought after prince in Europe, Damien of Nvengaria. Following a prophecy, he is seeking her mother, the owner of a ring twin to his own. By marrying her, he will, according to legend, restore peace and joy to his land. Unfortunately, Penny's mother is a shallow woman, not suitable for meeting this prophetic destiny, and moreover, she's involved with someone else. Plan B is much better, since Damien fell hard for Penelope from the moment they met. If her mother will give Penelope the ring, then she can be the lost princess and marry Damien. She agrees, never expecting the danger that her acceptance will place her in immediately. Damien's foes want him dead, and now her. They did not count on legends being true. Penelope does have the Princess' gift of healing; moreover, when they send a terrible shapechanging demon after her, Penelope's compassion turns it into a loyal servant, and with him, his entire tribe of logosh. Treachery and dark magic are no match for love in this story.
*** Filled with intriguing secondary characters, this fairy tale for mature readers will enchant you. There are some scenes that more gently minded readers would be advised to bypass; however, aside from those, there is a sweetness that is almost Disneylike throughout the rest. ***
fine romantic fantasy .......2006-04-14
In 1819 in Little Marching, England Penelope Trask lives a somewhat sedate life. That is staid and proper (most would say dull) until Prince Damien Augustus Frederic Michel of the kingdom of Nvengaria arrives claiming she is his princess. Penelope assumes that the handsome royal is either a lunatic or found the wrong female.
Damien is not prepared for rejection as he anticipated the villager would jump at the opportunity of becoming a princess. Instead the obstinate princess to be distrusts him perhaps for good reason. He needs to marry her immediately if he is to fulfill an ancient prophecy and regain his kingdom from an usurper. As they trek to his remote nation, they fend off attacks mundane by assassins and magical by evil wizards; they even survive a battle with a shapeshifting Logosh. All this makes Penelope a believer that there is more to earth than her village even as she and her prince fall in love.
PENELOPE AND PRINCE CHARMING is a fine romantic fantasy that shows Jennifer Ashley can leave the pirates behind. The story line is at its best when the lead couple struggles to survive against overwhelming odds, some mundane (assassins being an everyday occurrence) and some from the fantasist realm as the romance takes a back seat and at times feels intrusive to the fantasy. Sub-genre fans will enjoy this beguiling tale.

A Little Magic and Lots of Understanding.......2005-06-25
I found myself feeling joyful and inspired while reading this story and believe women - especially those that married young - can benefit from reading it. The Prince Charming fantasy is real for many of us. All long-term relationships must evolve for us to live a fulfilling life as an individual spiritual being in-relation to others. Once the initial blush of getting to know each other runs its course, most people have no idea where to go next or what to do. This book guides you through the process of self-exploration with caring and gentleness and does it with no judgments or blame.
My fairy godmother.......2005-05-30
When I read a book, I usually form a bit of an idea of what the author is like and I felt like it was written by a friend who understands me. This book has a flow to it that makes it easy to read. It's 'reality-based' and would be worth a read by anyone at any stage of a marriage, or any other relationship for that matter.
Now I Believe in Fairy God Mothers.......2002-03-27
By the time I got to chapter three of this delightful Marriage Life-line, I was certain Suzanne Harrill is my Fairy God Mother. Her remarkable insight into how I feel about the hard-hitting reality that after five years of sincere heartfelt mutual joy with my husband--the honeymoon is "somehow" really over--is a bright light of hope into a rats nest of confusion. The book imparts a sense of universal compassion and understanding for the position and perspectives of both wouldbe Cinderella's AND our Princes such that, contrary to how it seems, our plight is natural in the maturing of a long-term comitted partnerships. Each chapter offers hands-on processes to reflect and clarify thoughts, feelings and goals personally and as a couple. Following the guidelines, each person has a chance to explore individual needs and desires while helping each other decide what is best for the relationship. It is a priceless tool for anyone navigating a marriage individually or together.
My husband realized it wasn't my fault.......2002-03-13
Accessible. Lighthearted but deeply wise. I read this book on a friend's recommendation because my husband is having a mid-life crisis. I got him to read this book and he said, "Oh, I've been projecting." In other words, he was blaming me for things about himself that he didn't like. It was an important step in a living nightmare that came after 15 years of a mostly wonderful marriage. If only we all took classes in what a mature marriage looks like -- we see our parents' marriages but there is much they don't reveal to children. This book fills that gap. Read it early -- before you *need* to read it. At first, we don't talk with others because we feel shame. But this book helps you see how common these painful problems really are. You aren't alone.
Should be included in every New Marriage.......2001-10-12
The book was first read by the woman that I am involved with. She really enjoyed reading it and was able to understand more about our relationship. I read the book a couple months later and it also gave me more understanding about our problems between us. The book does stress how important a third neutral party can be of great help and as you might of guess unless you believe in Fairy Godmothers the third party is best left up to an Professional Therapist.
