5 out of 5 stars Finally, a minor miracle (at least for me)........2006-11-22

I am so very glad to say that miracles (even minor ones) do still happen. This is an anthology (usually to be approached with extreme caution by me, yet I continue to buy them) which actually has four, yes, count them, four GOOD stories. I almost didn't buy the book because of the diverse range of ratings from other readers but I am wholeheartedly glad I went ahead and got it. The plots of the four stories are very well described in other reviews so I will just say that I acutally enjoyed all four of these stories. No one stood out more than another but I also did not find one to be significantly weaker than the others.

Maybe the reasons some reviewers saw these stories in a negative way are the same reasons I liked them very much. They are all very simple love stories, relatively uncomplicated, containing very few secondary characters. Because of the brevity, the characters must deal with each other and their situations and not allow THE BIG MISUNDERSTANDING to take up page after page after page of unproductive activity. They are sweet and even innocent (even though each has a liberal sprinkling of sensual moments).

I found all four stories entirely to my liking. I know that the book was published in 1999 and literary styles have changed but not all those changes suit all readers. I, for one, still enjoy a good, old fashioned love story.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing..........2005-01-17

I know it's hard to establish character development in short stories, but I was so disappointed by this book. Even as a huge Julia Quinn fan, I can't give this book more than one star. I found the plots stilted, boring and not at all captivating. What's more, I just didn't care about any of the characters. For a much better book of similar nature, try The Further Observations of Lady Whistledown by Julia Quinn, et al. Skip this one.

3 out of 5 stars From Back Cover.......2004-10-13

FOUR INCOMPARABLE STORYTELLERS... FOUR ROMATIC TALES... FOUR BEWITCHING LASSES BOUND FOR THE ALTAR IN A LAND OF STRONG PASSIONS AND WILD BEAUTY.

Displaying the bold and breathtaking sensuality that is her hallmark, bestselling author CHRISTINA DODD enthralls us with the tale of a willful Scottish beauty - kidnapped by an arrogant yet irresistible Englishman - who fights to keep from succumbing to her brazen captor's passionate, and persuassive proposal.

Experience the fiercely emotional power of STEPHANIE LAURENS who is at her passionate best with this story of a wealthy gentleman who finds his childhood nemesis has blossomed into a most desirable lass - and he's determined to do everything in his power to claim her as his own, before she is quite unsuitably wed.

The delightful wit and warm humor of JULIA QUINN shine brightly in this winning romantic romp, in which a lovely English miss - feigning marriage to a dashing, beguiling Scotsman - discovers she has a very real desire for her make-believe groom.

Another strikingly dramatic and deeply compelling tale by KAREN RANNEY. A legend decress that the sexy Laird of Sinclair must marry a woman he heas never met. But only sweet, passion-filled love will lead him to his true - and forbidden - bride.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Historical Read That Evokes the Grandeur of Scotland.......2003-10-21

Scottish Brides, an anthology featuring mostly Regency era novellas that take place in Scotland, is a fun read though not spectacular.

Under The Kilt, by Christina Dodd, does a good job of painting two likeable and lusty characters in just 62 pages. Handsome amateur historian Hadden returns to the crumbling castle of Andra MacNachtan, the last of Clan MacNachtan, to again confront the beauty who stole his heart. He ostensibly wants to interview her about the clan's marriage kilt, but the encounter takes a surprise turn that proud and independent Andra never anticipated. This is an enjoyable romp with lots of fire between two absorbing characters.

Rose In Bloom, by Stephanie Laurens, has well-developed main characters and an interesting story, but it fails to satisfy. With Laurens' work I can never quite get into the characters. They somehow come off as an excuse to display as much eroticism as possible rather than seeming real and letting the eroticism grow out of who they are. This novella presents us with Duncan, a young perfectionist earl who's worked very hard the past ten years in the investment world to enable his gorgeous ancestral home to once again prosper. Now he's hosting a Midsummer party to court his visiting prospective bride. But he doesn't count on the presence of Rose, his companion and nemesis from his younger days, who now drives him wild with desire and who, like Duncan, is about to make a loveless match. Laurens emphasizes the fireworks between them.

As usual, Julia Quinn is superb in Gretna Greene, a spirited tale about Margaret Pennypacker, an English woman who rushes to Gretna Greene to prevent her brother from eloping, and a burly Scot, Angus Greene, who saves her from disaster. These warm, sympathetic and fun-loving characters are a joy to watch as they fall in love.

Finally, Karen Ranney creates a beautiful and adventuresome tale in The Glenlyon Bride, a Cinderella-like story that dazzles the reader. More than any of the other stories, this one captures the beauty and the magic that is Scotland. Nearly penniless Lachlan, laird of the Sinclairs, reluctantly agrees to a loveless match with a wealthy English harpy in order to save his clan. But when he meets the woman he nicknames Ealasaid and assumes is his bride-to-be on the grounds of her estate, he is pleasantly surprised at her refreshing wildness and goodness. Together they embark on a series of delightful adventures that culminate in their falling in love and consummating their union. But Ealasaid is actually the proud Scottish-born servant to the harpy, and she thinks Lachlan is a mere castle rustler who works for the laird she knows her venomous mistress will marry. When the truth comes out, a fun twist allows the couple to overcome not only the situation that is tearing them apart but also to solve Lachlan's financial dilemma.

Scottish Brides is an enjoyable read for lovers of Scotland and of historical romance.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet, overall.......2001-09-22

Being a Scottish girl myself, I was pleased to happen upon this book. Also, being a huge Julia Quinn fan didn't hurt. The four short stories all dealt with, obviously, Scotland in one way or the other. Christina Dodd, who also served as editor, was the reason "Scottish Brides" merited only four stars from me. Her story was simply the weakest. Julia Quinn delivered wonderfully and I again laughed out loud and woke up my roommate. Stephaine Laurens was in fine form, very akin to "Devil's Bride" and "A Rake's Vow." Karen Ranney, whose work I had never read, impressed me a great deal and actually used some Gallic. This is a great book, overall, and a fun, light read for a rainy fall day.

Perennial New York Times bestselling author Catherine Coulter gifts readers with a spectacular surprise, a fourth volume in her popular Brides trilogy. Tysen Sherbrooke, youngest of those sexy Sherbrooke brothers, is a widowed vicar, a single father of three who displays none of the wild oats his brothers possess in spades. When Tysen discovers that he has inherited a Scottish castle and the title of Baron Barthwick, little does he realize just how much his austere life will change. Upon arriving at his new holdings, Tysen encounters hostile townspeople who hate the new English baron simply because he's not Scottish; he also meets lovely, fiery-haired Mary Rose Fordyce, known as the local bastard, who is trying desperately to keep her unscrupulous guardian from bartering away her virginity. Under Tysen's protective eye, Mary Rose makes his sons and precocious daughter smile--and also behave. More importantly, she makes him smile, too. In fact, Mary Rose makes Tysen do--and feel--a lot of things he has never done or felt before. Coulter's clever, conversational style and ready wit in The Scottish Bride will delight and amuse fans as they relish this unexpected treat! --Alison Trinkle

5 out of 5 stars The Scottish Bride.......2007-10-10

I was very impressed with the speed of the delivery and the discription was very informative. Overall I couldn't have ask for more.

1 out of 5 stars terrible writing..........2007-05-10

this is the first c. coulter's book that i have read. and this is supposed to be the author's favorite in her bride series as she noted at the back cover of her book, so i thought she must have put her heart into writing this particular one, so i was expecting a good read. but i was very dissappointed, i don't like it at all...poor plot, no significant events happening, unlikeable characters, unconvincing dialogues, emotional connection lacking. to sum it all up, the author failed to make me feel that love and romance exists, which should be the main purpose of every novel written in this category. the hero indulged himself into lustful thinking which is unbecoming of him being a vicar. and at the point of marriage and their first "union", he did not think he loved her, it was just lust. again, as a man of God, he should know better to marry and make love only for love and nothing else. the author should have not made her hero a vicar. and the heroine, she's such a boring character, there's no fire in her at all. it's a waste of time and money...don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-03-27

This is the story of Tysen, the ultra conservative Sherbrooke brother of this series. When he inherits a Scottish castle he meets Mary, the local bastard who has been left a big dowry from her late father. Of course, they fall in love (was there any doubt). There is a really hilarious scene in which they travel to the city to find out how big her dowry really is. If you have read any of the Sherbrooke series, you will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful, fun, pure escape.......2005-01-07

Whenever I buy something from Amazon I always check the customer reviews as I have found them very helpful. That's why I was so surprised to see some of the reviews for this book that were so negative - a waste of time, etc. What do these readers expect? This is not Pulitzer Prize winning fiction. These books are what I call "bodice busters" and they're meant to be fun. That's exactly what they are. I've read all the heavy books I want to and still do on occasion. But mostly, when I read a novel, I want to be entertained and that's exactly what Catherine Coulter does. So for my money the book was well worth it. It passed the time, kept me interested and it was total escape. Bravo Ms. Coulter, keep em coming!

Setting: The East Indies and London, 1834

Sensuality: 7

Lovely widow Alexandra Warren and her young daughter are sailing from Australia to the haven of her family in London when pirates attack their ship and they are captured, separated, and Alex is sold into slavery. Six months later, Captain Gavin Elliott drops anchor at the island of Maduri and is shocked to find a European woman being auctioned in the slave market. Alex clings to hope when the handsome sea captain offers to buy her, but the ruling Sultan of Maduri has plans for Gavin and shrewdly views Alex's plight as a means to control him. Through strength, courage, and wisdom, Gavin thwarts the Sultan's plans, but after surviving the dangers of the South Seas, Alex and Gavin are faced with a more lethal threat when they arrive in London. This time, whether either of them will survive the evil that threatens their lives is anyone's guess.

The exotic locale of the East Indies contrasts vividly with polite London society in this third tale in Ms. Putney's trilogy (The Wild Child and The China Bride). The plot has enough twists and turns to satisfy the most devoted of mystery fans while the relationship between hero and heroine is complicated and the secondary characters well drawn. The author's exploration of British politics, slavery in the 1830s, and London society adds depth and texture to the novel. --Lois Faye Dyer

3 out of 5 stars Some good parts, but overall, it needs some work........2007-03-01

I like books that start off with a bit of a bang. This one certainly does.

In the Tower of London, an adventurer is awaiting trial for the murder of his wife, whom he loves quite dearly. For Gavin Elliot life on the seas and dry land has been a long series of hairbreadth escapes, and winning the love of not one, but two women. Now he's lost everything.

We get the heroine, the blond and beautiful Alexandra Warren in the middle of a pirate attack in the East Indies. Recently widowed, and with her young daughter, Katie, in tow, she's seeking to return to England and her family. But captured by pirates from a close by island, not only is she separated from her beloved daughter, she is subjected to a life of horrors.

Noted romance author Mary Jo Putney gives us another entry in her "Bride" series, with the title in this one coming from the events surrounding Alex's captivity by the decadent Sultan Kasan. The Sultan offers Elliot a choice -- to rescue Alex he must win at the challenges of the Lion's Game, or help the sultan build a merchanting empire. The fact that the sultan uses piracy to terrorize local shipping is a little matter here as well -- and Elliot has pressing business in England over a touch of revenge. How he manages to outwit the Sultan and rescue Alex and her daughter makes for one of the more entertaining sections of the novel.

Returning to England, our two main characters have managed to make a marriage of convenience, but further troubles await in persistant would-be lovers, a pack of in-laws (mostly characters from previous Putney novels that I found to be distracting), and that murder charge that the novel opened with. While I don't mind flashbacks as a plot device, sometimes it gets annoying. To the author's credit, her handling of the old tried-and-true "captured by pirates" storyline is here told in an inventive style, and kept my interest until the end of the novel. Both of the characters have emotional baggage that they cart along with them, and Putney handles the sensitive issue of rape and abuse in a dignified manner, much different than the usual "forcible seduction" that's a stock in trade of bodice rippers.

The bad part of the novel is that the villains are pretty much stock characters here, with only the Sultan being at all interesting (enough to make me wonder if Putney was setting him up as a future hero in a forthcoming book), but the others are pretty much one-notes. The really bad part is that the novel could have been more interesting if the extra characters had been cut out -- I kept getting distracted and bogged down with the little tidbits that Putney kept tossing here and there. Still, it's an interesting read for those of you who like their romance novels with plenty of adventure, and Putney has a deft touch in her writing style. Even the erotic bits are tasteful, and that's rare thing to find these days.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-08-24

This is my first book by this auothor. I found it to be exteremely different from the conventional historical romances which I'm used to reading. I do have to admit, that Gavin was described as the epitome of male perfection - which obviously is very unrealistic. I found many facets of the story quite realistic, for instance how the characters dont immediately fall - like how its usually portrayed in other novels...it took them a good 6 - 8 months to fall in love.... i found this idea quite close to reality. The initial attraction is present of course, and it wasnt overstated.
All in all...i enjoyed this book and the writing style of Mary Jo.

3 out of 5 stars Dragged 2.5 stars.......2006-06-08

This was my first book by this author. I was quite excited because of all the good reviews for her writing. I could not connect with these characters. I didn't find that there was any chemistry between the two. I found it quite annoying that Gavin always said and did the perfect thing. He had no passion whatsoever. Very boring book.

4 out of 5 stars One of her best.......2006-05-10

Mary Jo Putney has added another book onto the list of must reads. No disappointment here. From Australia to the East Indies, pirate ships, slave trade and of course, the happy ending. The story is fast paced and I couldn't put it down; a book to grab off the shelf and add to the shopping basket.

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......2005-06-29

I was prepared to not like this book. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that I picked it up, read the first page and put it down in favor of something else.

A few months later it was still sitting in my book bin, and I suppose I must have felt sorry for it, being neglected as it was, so I chanced it and cracked it open.

I'm so glad to be wrong! I really, honestly and truly, enjoyed this book from start to finish. I found the hero refreshing, engaging, and a man I could really cheer for in the end.

In reading many of the other reviews, I will agree that the way the book begins was the reason I didn't wish to read it at first. I just simply wasn't in the mood to deal with the possible let-down of the heroine dying before the book's end. Having finished it, however, I think the beginning was a rather brilliant stroke on Ms. Putney's part, as I spent most of the book in fevered anticipation of when "the bomb" would drop.

It was a well-crafted bit of work, and I would recommend this author to anyone.

I really enjoyed this book but then I am totally prejudiced when it comes to Scottish novels. I considered it very well
written and kept you interested at every turn of the page.
Will look for more of her books to read.
I don't think anyone who reads this one will be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Not too Bright.......2003-04-24

Perhaps it is just me but nothing makes me crazier then a lady who doesn't have any common sense and walks around making things worse time she tried to help. Set in Medieval Scotland time of arranged marriages and marrying to increase ones clan, or protect it, Scottish bride is just that, two very far fetched lovers thrown together to save a clan and prevent a war. Lillias McGinnis our leading lady seems to put her foot in it at every turn and Iain McLeod our hero after a nine year absence seems unable to see it coming. I found the story slow and too far fetched. Not to mention the number of times I became embarassed to be female.

I found this book on a shelf in a bookstore, thought it looked interesting and would serve the purpose of curing my boredom while sitting at home. Little did I know that this book would keep me enraptured so I could not put it down.
Normally I don't read books of this nature, but after realizing this is part of a series I went on a hunt for the other two and have not been let down thus far.

5 out of 5 stars And they lived happily ever after? Not! What then?.......2001-06-03

Lady of Light is the 3rd book in the Brides of Culdee series. Just when I think Kathleen Morgan has written her best ever, she comes out with one more. I appreciate the reality of flawed humans dealing with diffucult relationships. I also appreciate the reality of a great God who is ever present. In Lady of Light, Evan and Claire fall in love in a short period of time and marry. Not only do they deal with the problems of most newlyweds, but Claire brings along her troubled younger brother and immediately moves to a new country. In this new country, which is Evan's home, Claire deals with questioning in-laws and working daily with Evan's first love. Did he marry on the rebound? Does he really love her? Does he still long for his first love? When tradegy looms, the whole family must work together. But how!?! The complicated relationships must grow stronger or break. Even growth is not without pain and scars. A true love story because God is love.
