Practical, Simple and Powerful Self-Help.......2007-09-30
Since I was nineteen, I have perused, studied, analyzed, and read dozens of self-help books. I am now fifty which gives you an indication of my interest(obssession?) in this subject. Most of the books "talked at" me, telling me I should do this, that, and the other. In most cases, I always felt a rebellion against someone "telling me what to do" rather than helping me find my own inner knowledge, strength and courage. That is, until I read Taming Your Gremlin. In this slim book, I've learned how to identify and deal with my own gremlins and avoid as much as possible with "shoulds" and "oughts" and "needs". Rick Carson's down to earth style is entertaining and has taught me to bring out my genuine, self-honest self. Becoming self-aware and not self condemning makes the changes easier, much more of an adventure than forcing it. It is a work of True Love!

Taming your Gremlin.......2007-05-22
For those of us fighting depression, this book along with Dr. Burn's book.
"Feeling Good," continue to be my reads of choice even with my meds.
This is a great book if you have voices in your head telling you what a horrible person you are. It's of the same genre of "Who Moved My Cheese," and just as entertaining with a powerful message.
s
therapeutic.......2007-04-02
This interesting and simple little book helped me grapple successfully with the psychological fallout of a divorce. I was sorry I had not read it before I had created big problems for myself by listening to my gremlin.
Terrific Book!.......2007-03-25
This is a great book for anyone trying to tame the doubtful, critical voice that lives inside all of us. It is an easy, enjoyable read and very insightful. I use the book regularly in my life coaching practice and all of my clients have found it helpful.
The best self help book I've ever read.......2007-02-22
I have read a million "self help" books over the years, and this one is without exception, the most effective one that I have ever read. The concepts are spelled out in a simple way, as are the steps to take in order to get out of your own way and change your life for the better. Many books focus on issues and offer no solutions. This one does.

A hilarious play of the battle between the sexes........2007-05-25
This play is one of Shakespeare's most ribald, but I enjoyed it just the same. It's lusty, earthy and somewhat farcical. It's a very popular play because it is funny and fast-moving. And Shakespeare's wordplay is at its best here. I defy anyone not to laugh out loud numerously as they read this play. It is wonderful!
A Depature From Anything Previously Read.......2006-06-11
First off let me say that this is my first and only Shakespeare play that I have read so I have nothing to compare it too, author wise. I had to read this for my 9th grade english class, and my first thoughts on the text were that it was hard to understand, it was boring and I hated it. Looking back, I was wrong. The plot is a little lacking (I won't bore you with the details, you have read them elsewere), but the dialouge is very clever if you can understand it. Also, this edition has scene summaries and word definitions to help you understand it. Once I let it sink in after I completed it, I relized the underlying messages, the quick witted dialouge and the absurd (although a little weak, as mentioned before) plot make this a pretty good read. If you are up for a challenge I would recommend The Taming Of The Shrew. If you are new to Shakespeare, this seems as good of a place as any to start with his works.
A comedy of wit, But not Shakespeare's Best.......2004-10-31
Maybe it's because i read this through a class that it is not so good, but for some reason i didn't connect with this book. IT just didn't capture me like other Shakespeare books. King Lear was fantastic, Romeo and Juliet superb, Othello was fantastic, but the Shrew just didn't cut it for me. I think it's because it is a comedy. I enjoy the sirious Shakespeare better. OF course, besides all that the universal themes that shakespeare can recognize is amazing, so it still makes THe Shrew great. There are fantastic scenes of comedic wit, in which arguing scenes are taken to a whole new level of jabs and stabs with words. Overall, the story is weak, but does contain great writing.

A Must-Read For Overeaters.......2006-09-08
At last! A book written for people who are addicted to food and who are sick to death of diets, support groups, meetings and excuses. This book teaches you how to recognize the addictive voice inside of you and become master over it. AVRT, or Addictive Voice Recognition Technique, truly gives the power and control back to YOU. This recognition, as well as applying, what the Trimpey's refer to as T.A.P.S. is all you'll ever need again to lose all your excess weight. TAPS stands for Time - Amount - Place - Stuff. Setting rules about the time you eat, the amount you eat, where you eat (never in the car or in front of the TV, etc.), and of course, the "stuff" you eat, all in conjunction with making the "Big Plan" (i.e., I Will Always Eat Correctly) really, really works. I read this book, applied the AVRT to my life, and the weight has just melted off. The best part? I did not diet nor will I ever again. Now that I can recognize the addictive voice which screams for more food, especially when I don't need it, I know that I will never have to struggle with fatness again. I highly recommend this book!
A different point of view on the concept of "Food Addiction".......2002-01-21
This book turns the 12 step recovery movement as applied to overeaters on it's head. The Trimpey's are most known for their opposition to Alcoholics Anonymous and similar 12 step programs; Overeater's Anonymous is the same program used in AA, only applied to "food addiction". The first step of Overeater's Anonymous is to admit that one is "powerless" over his/her compulsion to overeat; that overeating is a lifelong "disease" that will never be cured. Only by working the 12 step program and attending meetings for life can anyone begin to approach "recovery". The Trimpey's argue that this belief system is irrational and ultimately unhelpful to the overeater. The book outlines some key "Philosophy of Fatness" (irrational beliefs) that helps to keep us overeaters fat. Some of these beliefs are the following:
1. I am powerless over the urges to eat, and therefore not in control of what I put into my mouth.
2. To feel like a worthwhile person, I must be "presentable" to others; so that no one will see me as fat or unattractive or even plain.
3. To build self-esteem or respect myself, I must lose weight.
4. My painful emotions and cravings are often intolerable, and they must be controlled by eating food.
5. It is a dire necessity for adults to be loved, accepted, and approved of.
The authors describe how these beliefs harm us and give us rational alternatives to them. There are also many anecdotes of people who have used "rational thinking" to lose weight.
As someone who has participated in Overeater's Anonymous, I found this book to be liberating. I felt more powerful and in control simply by reading it. I was always uncomfortable with the idea of being powerless over my eating, and now I realize this concept won't work for me personally. The Trimpeys are not expressing new ideas here. Indeed, the concept of changing limiting or irrational beliefs about yourself and the world is a psychological concept known as Rational Emotive Therapy or RET. But it is helpful to see it used specifically for problems with overeating.
If the book has one fault it is that the authors say more than once that examining your past and possible emotional reasons for overeating is useless. The size of your hips is due to the food you put into your mouth, not to a dysfuntional childhood. While I agree that my hips don't care about my childhood, I do think that it has been helpful for me to examine my emotional pain and where it comes from. It helps me to see that food was not the cause nor will it be the solution to my problems.
If you've been struggling with compulsive overeating, this book is one you should plan on reading.
Fresh Approach for an Age-old problem.......2001-01-28
The Trimpeys aren't going to be popular among all the myriad therapists, treatment centers, fat farms, diet gurus and "experts" like Susan Powter and Richard Simmons who are making fortunes at the expense of desperate dieters. What this book manages to so ably point out is that every person who has successfully lost weight and kept it off permanently did so from a Big Plan - NOT through the "support" of any group such as Weight Watchers, Overeaters Anonymous or the like. It was an INDIVIDUAL CHOICE backed up by individual effort and initiative. The Trimpeys help the reader find that motivation and reinforce the will to recover from binge eating by recognizing and seeing through the Voice of Fatness. While there are no easy answers or magic pills, there IS a rational choice which we can learn to make for ourselves. By debunking the irrational beliefs surrounding compulsive eating, discarding worthless theories about the origins of our problems, and directly confronting that internal voice masquerading as our own mind we can triumph over the whole kit and kaboodle.
A book that makes sense!.......1997-11-30
If you want another diet book that includes what or what not to eat, don't read this book. This book is not your ordinary book full of diet tips and exercise strategies. It's a powerful book concerning addiction and how to rationally overcome the addiction. It gives you a plan of action to conquer that voice that SCREAMS at you when you want to binge. The language is not techniqual and boring but straightforward. If you are a binge eater, this is a must read book.

Heart warming.......2007-03-12
This is a wonderful book. Another great series from Nora Roberts. One word of advise....you have to read Taming Natasha then switch to Luring a Lady and Convincing Alex then read Falling for Rachel to get the stories in order. Afterward, there are 2 more books related to these...Waiting for Nick (Rachel's brother-in-law) and Considering Kate (Natasha's daughter. Reflections and Dreams (Dance of Dreams in particular) is yet another related book with Nickolai Davidov from Considering Kate. Dance to the Piper as well as the O'Hurley's books connect through as well. This is quite a confusing but fun set of books.
Wonderful tale of two sisters.......2006-05-18
Nora Roberts' tale of two sisters will keep you turning the pages. Natasha and Rachel are different and unique in their thoughts, passion, and men. Readers will enjoy reading their stories.
THE MATCH IS PERFECT FOR BOTH SISTERS.......2004-07-14
TAMING NATASHA-SPENCE IS A GOOD MAN WITH A BIG HEART AND WANTS TO SHARE IT WITH NATASHA. SHE'S BEEN HURT BEFORE AND DOES NOT WANT TO RISK IT. SHE DECIDES THAT SHE NEEDS TO FACE HER FEARS HEAD ON.
FALLING FOR RACHEL-WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE TWO MEN WHO BOTH WANT YOU? ONE YOU SEE AS A CHILD AND THE OTHER YOU COULD TAKE TO BED. WHAT WILL SHE DO?
Extraordinary Book!.......2004-05-14
This is the first book that I have read in a while that has been a wonderful book, and kept me on the edge of my seat. Natasha and Rachel are two of my favorite characters in the Stanislaski saga.
Heartwarming Stories of an Immigrant Family.......2004-05-01
This book contains two full-length novels both written by Nora Roberts, and originally published in the early 90's as Silhouette Special Editions.
TAMING NATASHA: Natasha Stanislaski is one of four children born to immigrant parents, who escaped from the Ukraine into America, for a chance at a better life. Previously a ballerina for a New York Dance Company, Natasha now owns and runs a toy store in the small town where she resides in West Virginia. Spencer Kimball, widower and father to a little girl named Freddie, has just moved from New York to this same small town. Spencer is a music composer as well as the new professor at the local college. When Natasha and Spencer meet, they get off on the wrong foot, but when Natasha decides to take a college class in music history, she's surprised to find Spencer is the teacher. They embark on a relationship, but will Natasha be able to move beyond the pain of her past which still haunts her, and offer this man her heart?
FALLING FOR RACHEL: Rachel Stanislaski is the sister of Natasha from the previous story. She is an attorney with a strong sense of justice who works as a public defender in New York. Her latest case is representing nineteen-year-old Nick LeBeck, a frightened tough guy whose parents have both died. Now Nick is mixed up with a gang, and taking the rap for an interrupted burglary. Zack Muldoon is Nick's stepbrother, and the only family Nick has left. Two years ago, Zack returned after a stint in the Navy, and will now do whatever he needs to insure Nick doesn't get prison time. Nick is sentenced to a provisionary time period where he will live with Zack, while Rachel keeps contact with Nick, and reports on his behavior. The chemistry between Zack and Rachel is undeniable, but will problems with Nick keep them apart?
Both these stories were quite enjoyable, and I had not read them when they were originally published. The Stanislaskis are a very likeable and loving family, one you'd like to be a part of. There is another book called THE STANISLASKI BROTHERS, which contain the stories of Mikhail and Alexi. My favorite of the four stories would be Mikhail's from the BROTHERS book, but all of them are heartwarming, humorous and delightful.
Book Description
Bamboos are extraordinary in their ability to transform a garden, adapt to inhospitable surroundings, survive with little care and, most of all, surprise and delight the people who view them. Too long the exclusive pleasure of those with tropical and subtropical gardens, this hand-picked selection allows gardeners in cooler climes to experience the wonder and infinite variety of these magical plants. Besieged by winter wet, summer drought and bitter, drying winds, Paul Whittaker's garden has been a rigorous testing ground. In the first part of the book his compelling anecdotes, experiences and case histories illuminate how bamboos perform in different places, draw attention to their idiosyncratic nature, and highlight their geographical origins. A further section describes the bamboo's unique physical structure and growing habits. These fascinating insights give you the knowledge you need to choose the right bamboo for your site and grow it successfully. At the heart of the book are detailed plant descriptions that join with striking photographs and evocative illustrations to highlight each plant's characteristics. Using bamboos to best effect in the garden, propagation, aftercare and their resilience to pests and diseases complete the guidance for gardeners. The distillation of years of hands-on growing experience, this is the ultimate bamboo reference book for cool-climate gardeners. Enthusiasts will delight in the variety of new possibilities for their collection and gardeners everywhere will be captivated by the charm bamboos bring to countless different garden situations.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Bamboo Book........2007-07-21
The best bamboo book period. Wonderful pictures, excellent categorizing. I have several other bamboo books and this is by far the best.
Entertaining read, and good info too!.......2007-05-24
This book is surprisingly interesting to read, mostly because of anecdotes that the author includes--Paul Whittaker's self deprecating sense of humor makes you interested in meeting him in person.
The things that I appreciated the most about the book, outside of the easy going, easy to read nature of the book:
1. Characterization of the exhaustive list of bamboos included the spreading habit of the plant--how wide the bamboo would get in 10 years. This is great info for those of us who have to worry about containing bamboo...
2. Great pencil drawings of the nature of the bamboo--density of culms, upright vs. fountain appearance. It gave a sense of what the plant might look like in the yard.
3. Great pictures, including close-ups of leaves, and branches in addition to the typical photos of culms.
4. It gave me a better appreciation of the branching characteristics of bamboo families, which presumably has some relation to the density of leaves associated with a plant.
This is the book that I would read over and over again if I were trying to decide which bamboo to plant, or even if I were dreaming about getting a bamboo in the future.
Hardy Bamboo Taming the Dragon.......2007-05-13
Wonderful book. Well written, very helpful information--both general and species specific. Also beautiful, color photographs. Nicely organized, and even the sketches of growth habit I found to be very helpful.
Hardy Bamboos: Taming the Dragon.......2007-03-09
Excellent photos, clear and concise descriptions, well organized, just a super book for the beginner or advanced bamboo grower or enthusiast.
One of the best books about Bamboo that I have read!.......2007-01-12
Great book! A lot of information and a lot of great pictures! It really helps you identify bamboo species and helps you choose the right bamboo for your zone.
Book Description
This is Sheck Exley's exciting story of the discovery and mapping of the beloved Peacock Springs Cave System - at that time thought to be the world's longest underwater cave.
His manuscript was incomplete when he met his untimely death in 1994 on a dive in Mexico. It has now been completed and expanded with the many new sections he had planned:
1. History of Peacock Slough including a social history plus the creation of a state park to preserve the cave and its surroundings as Exley had hoped.
2. Florida geology and biology.
3. Cave diving eqipment.
4. Peacock Re-Survey, a five year project that updated Exley's original map.
Customer Reviews:
A true classic.......2007-05-14
The Slough was unfinished and it is not as good as the Caves Measureless to Man as a result of this. However it is considered a classic as a standard textbook for underwater cave exploration techniques.
Peacock Springs.......2006-08-14
It is what it is - a detailed book about Peacock Springs and some of the other U/W caves of north Florida. It is detailed, well researched book on a specific cave system, from a scuba divers point of view. If you want to learn about this area - might be the ONLY book you can get - hence it is invaluable. Has sections on the biology of caves, geology, maps of caves, past explorers, etc.
I wish they'd spend more time on specifics of all the divers who died in these caves - just to keep the many amateur divers out of them and alive!

Customer Reviews:
Aperture Exposed.......2007-08-28
The instructions in this text are a little difficult to follow. I am an intermediate photographer, and this book may have been intended for a person with more experience and skill than I have. It is full of important information, but I am going to look for a more basic Aperture manual.
Finally Exposed.......2006-10-15
The basic principle behind this book is obviously to dissect Apple's Aperture image-editing...no no, workflow program. I was standoffish on buying Aperture as I am very married to Photoshop, however, as I began to shoot more digital photos I found myself with photos on various hard drives, backed up two or three times because I couldn't remember what I did or when I did it, and then there is Aperture and this book.
The book only received 4 of 5 stars from me because I think they should have covered the monitor calibration or color correcting information in the beginning, but this isn't a book about color correction for your monitor, it is about Aperture.
I found the book easy and enjoyable to read. It was technical, but not so technical that you find yourself confused or frustrated. While you do not need a book to get started in Aperture, this book will certainly walk you through all of the features in v1.1 so that you do not under use the application.
I would recommend this book even though Aperture is now running at v1.5.
Aperture Exposed.......2006-10-09
What is Aperture? The program is Apple Computer Company's answer to a digital workflow for digital images. The program tries to recreate the days of editing slides on a light table. The program is like the professional version of iPhoto with more power. It is also designed to handle RAW images which most professional Single-Reflex-Lens (SLR) cameras can shoot.
The program is a digital workflow program and has many nondestructive editing fea-tures built into it. The program is not a substitute an external image editor such as Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or other photo editing programs if you are interested in more creative editing. Aperture works in conjunction with these programs.
Apple updated Aperture from version 1.1 to version 1.5 while I was working on the re-view. Apple has added 20 new features to the program so the book is somewhat out of date but the basic functions of the software have not changed much. I wrote the review based on version 1.1. Reading Apple's website, version 1.5 will make the program eas-ier to use with other Apple programs such as the Apple's iLife Suite and the iWorks and a more flexible library management for example.
The authors Ellen Anon and Josh Anon fit a lot of information in 297 pages. The di-mensions of the book are 10.0 x 8.0 x 0.7 inches so the book is easy to take along with you if you use Aperture on a laptop. The book has plenty of white space and color pho-tos so it's easy on the eyes. The chapters covered by the book are Welcome to Aper-ture, Importing and Organizing Your Images, Viewing Images, Finding the Keepers, Nondestructive Image Processing, Exporting Images, Printing, Creating Web Content, Creating a Book, and Advanced Aperture.
The book is easily to understand and the authors tried to make it as non-technical has possible. If you are new to Aperture you might want to read the entire book but if you have used the software for a while you might be interested in the second half of the book. The authors are very clear about this in the introduction of the book stating you can read the entire book, chapters or just sections.
The authors give you examples of various nondestructive editing techniques you can use in Aperture on your digital images. They also give you the published website so you can download the examples files and work with the examples yourself so you can better understand what authors are trying to explain. I found working with examples helpful because you can only go so far with trying to understand text and the screen shots.
As you read through the book the authors discussed how to adjust digital images. They will not give you a lot of theory as to why you would do certain things. This would be beyond the scope of the book but you should be aware if this limitation of you purchase the book.
As I read through the book and the authors discussed various features of the Aperture and then under printing the authors discussed color correcting your computer screen so you get true colors. I was surprised that they waited until three-fourths of the way through the book because they discussed color adjustment and other features in earlier chapters. I think the discussion of color correcting your screen should have been dis-cussed at the beginning. The reason I believe the discussion should be a the beginning of the book is the authors spend so much time on color correcting and editing the digital images through out the book. If your monitor screen colors are not correct you will likely not color correct your images correctly. Once you go to a different computer or print your photos you might be in for a big surprise. Also, if the readers of the book are new to digital photography they might no realize the problems of not having a color corrected screen.
In the copy of the book I reviewed, I found Figure 3.11 had a dark screen shot. The figure is on page 66.
I found that when I read a selection and then came back to it, I had a hard time finding the commands and short cuts. I think the authors might consider a short cut command page per chapter so readers do not have to search for them.
Aperture Exposed is a good book for someone wanting to learn Aperture. If you are an advanced user you might only find the last part of the book useful to you. Just a re-minder this version of the book is for Aperture 1.1 and the newest version that just came out the end of September 2006 is version 1.5. Some of the features have changed so some parts of the book will be out of date if you purchase the book.
Aperture Exposed.......2006-09-25
This is one of the most easy-to-read technical manuals that I have come across. The style is engaging and light, while the content is comprehensive, up to date and surprisingly detailed. Recommended for those just starting with Aperture or those after a very good companion manual.

Great book but beware ..........2005-11-11
I have had my African Grey for about a three weeks and have been reading everything I could get my hands on before I brought her home. I really loved this book, but wanted to let folks know that this book is a reprint of the book by the same author titled "The Pleasures of Their Company: An Owner's Guide to Parrot Training [Hardcover]. Don't make the same mistake I made and order both.

Book Description
This is a new edition of an anonymous play that appears to be an alternative version of Shakespeare's popular comedy, The Taming of the Shrew. Stephen Miller suggests that someone rewrote Shakespeare's more complicated version, making it shorter, simpler and different in some ways. The main difference between the two plays concerns the framing story of Christopher Sly, the drunk, who disappears early on in Shakespeare's version, but who has a much larger role in A Shrew. This edition provides a modernized text and extensive commentary.

Confused.......2002-10-18
I thought the general consensus of opinion was that Shakespeare didn't write "..a Shrew" since it is so different & inferior to "..the Shrew".
Perhaps I should actually buy this book and see huh?

"Don't trust your instincts." Hardly the standard self-help fare, to be sure. Arguing that Darwin has a lot more to tell us about ourselves than Freud, Mean Genes is high on evolution and low on inner child. Deemed "brilliant" by E.O. Wilson himself, the book is the work of two young Wilson disciples: Terry Burnham, an economics professor at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, and Jay Phelan, a professor of biology at UCLA.
Burnham and Phelan divide life issues into 10 categories (debt, fat, drugs, risk, greed, gender, beauty, infidelity, family, and friends and foes), and then offer a two-step guide to better living. "Step 1 is to understand our animal nature, particularly those desires that get us into trouble and can lead to unhappiness. Step 2 is to harness this knowledge so that we can tame our primal instincts."
Needless to say, Nancy Reagan-esque bromides don't fit into the Mean Genes scheme of things:
"Just say no" to drugs is the simplest way to kick a habit. Unfortunately, this obvious and low-cost approach is also the route most likely to fail. For example, only one person quits smoking for every twenty who attempt to just say no. Raw willpower seems like a great solution right up until weakness strikes and we light up a cigarette or mix a margarita.
Instead of slogans, the Mean Genes approach to overcoming drug addiction is to first recognize that "every person has strong, instinctual cravings for destructive substances." This, coupled with a thorough scientific understanding of a given drug's pleasurable effects on the brain, offers a more realistic course of action, such as finding a less harmful substitute for achieving a similar buzz.
Be it talk of weight loss, saving for retirement, or resisting the neighbor's wife, such practical, tough-love suggestions for subduing the beast within are provided throughout the book. Phelan describes how he instantly smears mayonnaise all over tempting sweets served with airline meals to keep from eating them during long flights, and Burnham writes of giving away his Internet access cable in order to free himself of a serious day-trading fixation.
The authors also rely heavily on findings from the animal world in stating their case, which makes for fascinating reading, if not always for readily transferable lessons to daily life. Consider, for example, certain frog species that "continue individual bouts of mating for several months. If people mated for a similar percentage of our lives, a single round of intercourse would last almost ten years." And then there's the famed black widow spider. "Shunning the more traditional chastity belt, the male breaks off his sexual organ inside the female, preventing her from ever mating again. When the act is completed, the female kills and eats the male."
Put off by all the sex and violence? Don't worry. There's also a nod to family values in the form of the Australian social spider. "Soon after giving birth to about a hundred hungry spiderlings, Mom's body literally liquefies into a pile of mushy flesh. The babies then munch on the flesh so they can start their lives with full bellies." Mean genes, indeed. --Patrick Jennings
Book Description
"The Mean Genes message is optimistic . . . a self-help book for the merely average human being." (The Washington Post Book World)
"An unusual cross between a social Darwinist monograph and a self-help manual." (The New Yorker)
Why do we want-and do-so many things that are bad for us? In Mean Genes Terry Burnham and Jay Phelan argue that we need to stop looking to Sigmund Freud for answers and start looking to Charles Darwin. Mean Genes reveals that our struggles for self-improvement are, in fact, battles against our own genes-genes that helped our distant ancestors flourish, but are selfish and out of place in the modern world. Using this evolutionary lens, Mean Genes brilliantly examines the issues that most affect our lives-body image, money, addiction, violence, and relationships, friendship, love, and fidelity-and offers steps to help us lead more satisfying lives.

Good book.......2007-06-27
The book is easy to read, and aims to explain human behavior based on our psychological aspects and our genes. It's a good book, a book I will keep on my book shelf. However, it's nothing extraordinary, it will not change your life perspective by 180 degrees :).
Funny, Practical.......2007-04-30
Phelan and Burnham's practical, yet informative and humorous approach to teaching shines in their book through multitude of real life stories. It is half science, half novella, 100% genuine and funny!
Nothing New.......2007-01-04
I just finished "Mean Genes". This is a book you will read once and will sit on the shelf. I am glad I checked it out from the library.
It is a quick and easy read, which I like. Other books of this sort can become bogged down in scientific lingo. There was nothing in this book that I had to re-read several times before it sunk in. That isn't necessarily a good thing.
I did not read any information that I have not already heard. And I am far from an expert on such a topic. I, like most, am somewhere in the middle when it comes to intellegence (of course, I like to think I am at the upper level of average). I am sure that has something to do with my genes.
If you want a quick and easy read, this book is for you. If you want to learn in-depth information on genes, look elsewhere.
A light introduction to a serious subject.......2006-11-30
Mean Genes is a light and entertaining overview of human sociobiology, so those looking for a more "serious" work should skip this one. Burnham and Phelan demonstrate that much of human nature reflects our evolutionary past. They do acknowledge the importance of environment, but it's now clear that upbringing is a 3rd-order effect after genetics and epigenetics in that order. (Otherwise chimps could be raised to be like people.)
When I was younger, I used to be on the fence re: evolution and religion. However I'm now a believer in the former because it explains what the latter can't: it explains why men have a stronger sex drive than women (because men have an infinite supply of sex cells vs. women); it explains why people are more aggressive and violent than they should be (e.g. road rage), considering our modern (easy) lifestyle; it can even explain why people are compelled to believe in religion in the first place.
junk theories?.......2005-07-16
Save your money! I can sum up the book in a few sentences. According to the authors, we are genetically inclined to spend money and avoid saving because our ancenstors didn't have refrigerators. We use drugs because they make us feel good. We take risks because it gives us a little high. We do drugs because they make us feel good.
I had to read this book for a graduate Accounting class. No, I am not joking. I wouldn't have wasted my money, nor my time if I wasn't being graded on it. This book is a bunch of junk theories that say we are genetically induced to do things because of some ancestor and we can change it if we are smart enough. On just about every page in the book is some study done on animals that is supposed to be related to the topic. The author says races have DNA that are almost identical. Yeah, well Chimps and humans have almost identical DNA's. The book also says that 25% of women and 50% of men admit to cheating on their spouse. If you look at the source, you will see it is from 1974 and published by none other that Playboy Press. The book also says 10% of British children tested were not children of their married mother and father. Meaning that the mother had an affair. However, in the notes it says that this 10% only applies to people who were suspicious and actually went and had the test done. That is a pretty importatnt fact they chose to leave out in the text.
This book is a bunch of theories based on animal behavior and the hypothetical behavior of our ancestors. The rest of the book is common sense. Especially the dozen or so pages the authors use to discuss how women like men with money and success. I didn't need a PhD to tell me that.
