5 out of 5 stars Haddock is introduced in the Golden Claws.......2007-08-23

Thundering Typhoons!! Had been trying to get my hands on this issue as it introduces my fave. character!! It compliments the package well because the issues are in a sequence and one ends up getting more of blistering barnacles! I would recommend this to Haddock's admiration club and otherwise as well!

2 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2007-02-07

The quality of the printing is far from perfect. It smooches on several pages. Also, I read the French version first and the English one is, in my opinion, rather lame. A lot of work would need to be done to improve it.

5 out of 5 stars Tintin on his adventures!.......2007-01-21

I have read many Tintin adventures and love them all. Herge can make very funny adventure stories.
In the book, The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin meets Captain Haddock. Captain Haddok loves whisky. Professor Calculus is not here. He comes in Red Rackham's treasure.

Volume 3: The Crab With the Golden Claws (1942), The Shooting Star (1942), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943). This is the third instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.

As I mentioned in my review for Volume 1, as a child I read these stories in no particular order. So, when reading The Crab With the Golden Claws, I was surprised to see Captain Haddock in such a pitiable state, having made his acquaintance in later adventures...

But this is where he is introduced, and the friendship that develops between Haddock and Tintin not only allows the alcoholic captain to bloom, it lifts the curtain on one of the most entertaining, impulsive (Haddock = ad hoc, get it? In French, the pronunciation of the two is exactly the same...), flawed, and in essence loyal, good hearted and lovable characters in all comicdom. His irascible nature will be abundantly prodded with insufferable foils (Wagg, Abdullah, Castafiore, the Thom(p)sons, and sundry villains) throughout the series. We also meet the sinister Allan for the first time. The story takes place in Morocco, and the child sees yet more of our planet's vistas, while the adult continues to revel in Hergé's textured adventures and detailed settings, as well as a terrifying dream sequence.

Michael Farr's "Tintin: The Complete Companion" (highly recommended), gives a glimpse at why Tintin did not take in the USA as it did in the rest of the world, and that has to do with a couple of panels from The Shooting Star. Though with some brilliant sequences, such as the cinematic seasickness scene, it is not as captivating as the usual Tintin standard, but again, one does not want to miss a single adventure.

The Secret of the Unicorn has a number of threads, one of which develops into the sequel, Red Rackham's Treasure.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret Country.......2007-03-27

This book and its sequels are three of my very favorites. By chance I found them in the book store. I was just browsing, and the cover page caught my eye. Grabbing it, I read the back and was immediatly intrigued. It was a book about something that made me think. I bought it and its sequels, and immediatly fell in love with them. Pamela Dean's expressive and realistic characters are so inviting that you can't put it down. The dialoge is amazing, and the plot intricate with its many slip-ups and twists.

For years five very different cousins Ruth, Ted, Patrick, Ellen, and Laura have played a game they call the Secret. It is filled to the brim with mystery, drama, court intrigue, mystical beasts, enemy kingdoms, and most of all, magic. The Secret has characters that the cousins have based off of themselves, or who they wish to be. Lady Ruth, Prince Edward, Prince Patrick, Princess Ellen, and Princess Laura, are the royal children. There are many other quirky characters that fill the game and keep it interesting. Then, by chance or by fate, the five find themselves in their Secret Country, playing their pretend roles as the many twists and turns of their plot unfold. The cousins soon realize that they must stop everything they acted out at home, and that they have to find a way back to their real lives.

The Secret Country is a book that describes every book-lover and play-maker's dream: what if the imaginary worlds we dream about become real? It is a book every lover of fantasy should read.

4 out of 5 stars the secret country.......2007-01-22

Ted and Laurie found a sword that took them into the wondrous world that they and their cousins Ruth, Patrick, and Ellen created. Many different events have been happening and few have turned out the way they were supposed. It seemed that their fantasy world was taking control now and they were just visiting. It was time to play their roles and find out what was happening. If you are interested to find out what happens next, read The Secret Country by Pamela Dean. I would highly recommend this book to all teen readers.

The first reason I would recommend this book is because of its plot. For example, the "secret country" took years to prepare and to make choices. Another instance is when Ted has a dream of a fencing match with Lord Randolph and uses the dream as a base for his fencing techniques. The last instance is when they use Sham's Ring to pause time in their own world so they stay out of trouble.

Another reason I would recommend this book is for its indifference from other fantasy books. Such as, the Unicorns are the most powerful beings. Another example is that five kids are to change the country's destiny and to save it from the Dragon King. A third example is that there are swords that allow them to travel at will between the worlds and are able to cast light. One last example is that their game is turning real and that they have no control.

The final reason I would recommend this book is because of its creativity. Like, the children must not get caught in their other world clothes. The characters each have their own abilities and weaknesses. Ruth is a witch, Ted is a practiced swordsman and Laura is a princess and there are more abilities for each character. And that the secret country is on Pennsylvania's time meaning that it's hard to sneak out and not get in trouble for all of the kids.

I would recommend this book to all readers that prefer fantasy books. This book starts out slow, but eventually the plot speeds up and it becomes more interesting. The plot will keep you wanting more as you get further into it, although it will still have slow parts. There is some action throughout the book, but the amount increases as you near the end of the book. If you liked this book be sure to grab a copy of the next two books in the series.

3 out of 5 stars The Secret: Each Book Gets Better.......2006-01-08

I originally picked up this trilogy because it looked interesting and the other reviewers raved about it. Chapters into the first book, I began to wonder why it was so beloved. More questions than answers swam across the page, drowning me in confusion and frustration. I felt thrown into a sea without a life preserver. The language was too archaic at times, and I constantly felt I was not being given enough information to process the storyline.

I felt like I was plowing through the book with an old, tired horse in a massive field full of rocks while the burning sun beat down from above. Being a complete-ist, however, I trudged on and picked up book #2. Halfway through, I pleasantly discovered that my horse was more spry, the rocks had disappeared from the field, and I was wearing a broad-rimmed hat. I was still plowing, but it wasn't nearly as painful. By book #3, I had a tractor, cool breeze, and lemonade in my hand. The work was no longer a chore but a welcome vacation I found thoroughly enjoyable.

I can hardly account for the transition, but it did happen. I recommend the trilogy to those who are not afraid to persevere in the beginning to achieve a great reward in the end.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for the trilogy.......2005-07-27

I picked this book up at the store several times, and always set it down again. Finally I found an old edition at a used book store, and took the plunge. Boy, am I glad the trilogy was reprinted! The Secret Country ends rather abruptly, leaving very little resolved except the reader's intention to find book number two. Which I did. And read in one sitting the same night. I did not understand all of it, and certainly did not catch all the literary references, but when I reached the end of the trilogy, I wanted nothing so much as to pick up the first and start it again, merely for the pleasure of keeping company with the likes of Ted, Ruth, Laura, and the various denizens of the Hidden Land. And much the same way as I check every wardrobe I see for a passageway to Narnia, I will now keep a sharp eye for strange houses surrounded by hedges. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I hear my book calling...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - Read the Others!.......2004-07-29

The Secret Country is the first title in the Secret Country trilogy, which takes the usual kids-from-our-world-are-transported-to-a-magical-realm story structure and turns it on its head. Not only do these kids know this world - they've made up stories about it and acted them out for many years - but they find they're forced to take the places of the princes, princesses, and sorcerers everyone in the Secret Country thinks they are, even though they can't fight with swords or use magic. In addition, the five children are finding that not everything they made up in their games turns out to be true...

The Secret Country is now one of my favorite books, and I've re-read it several times - I can't believe it ever went out of print! The world and plot are quite unlike anything else I've read, and the five children were all very vivid and distinct people - I never mixed them up, one of the problems I've found in other stories. Other characters were also well written, and I enjoyed the mix of the somewhat Shakespearean speech of the inhabitants of the Secret Country with the modern talk of the children. The unicorns were also very interesting, with their wry sense of humor and ambivalent attitude towards humans.

If you the choice to read The Secret Country, it might be a good idea to note that this is one of those trilogies in which the three volumes are really just one long story, with cliffhanger endings. I wish someone had told me that when I first read this book - I immediately had to go back to the bookstore to purchase the next two books - they're titled The Hidden Land and The Whim of the Dragon, in case you didn't know.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Captain America: Secret Empire.......2007-01-25

This graphic novel collects some old issues of the Captain America comic from the Seventies--#'s 169-176--and features the adventures Cap has before giving up his role as the Star-Spangled Avenger. This means that Secret Empire is a story of a hero's growing disillusionment with his own country. I'm disappointed with how little we get to see inside Steve Roger's (aka Captain America's) psyche as the Watergate scandal breaks while Cap is simultaneously framed for murder and rejected by the citizens he has always protected thanks to a widespread conspiracy unfolding against him, but other than that, this is an entertaining story, which guest-stars CA's regular partner of the time, The Falcon, at his best.

The Secret Empire is a bunch of guys in hooded cloaks, but they have awesome weapons, a flying saucer powered by the mutant minds of various captured X-Men (and some of their foes), and agents placed in all the strata of American society, ready to assist, when called on, in the secret domination of their country. Quentin Harderman is one of those agents, and as the head of the Committee To Regain America's Principles--really just a propaganda tool of the Empire--his mission is to discredit Captain America by launching an insidious smear campaign with TV ads, and seal the deal by framing Cappy for murder with some help from a super-powered villain named Moonstone whom the public will be manipulated into seeing as great hero and replacement for Cap. Though the obligatory fight scenes pull focus away from the subtler aspects of what's truly cool here--do Cap and The Falcon really need to fight the Banshee in Nashville while pursuing a lead?--the intervention of realworld politics, like Moonstone on a talk-show glibly lumping the "Captain America scandal" in with Watergate, gives the Secret Empire saga clout.

The truth is, Spider-Man spent much of his career wanted for murder while being targeted by a powerful media mogul (you know who) in a relentless smear campaign--so what's so special here? And Iron Man was very similarly framed for murder by a villain trying to destroy all his credibility. Batman (well, okay, Bruce Wayne) has been a fugitive due to a frame-up. And most major heroes in comics have, at one time or another, given up their crime-fighter identities, often when the public doesn't want them around anymore. So why is it a bigger deal when THIS hero quits? Well, simply put, because he wears the Stars and Stripes, and functions as a symbol of his country, and even of his government. When Captain America decides to stop being Captain America not long after chasing Agent Number One of the Secret Empire into The White House and unmasking unthinkable corruption while inside its walls, it is a comic book with something to say about how powerful corruptors can make dupes of all of us. Very cool metaphor for the shocking truths being revealed in American politics at the time...even if this fictional counterpart features a flying saucer full of X-Men on the White House lawn.

I was originally going to give Secret Empire only a 3-Star review because of some clunky plotting (what happened to Mastermind, Unus, the Blob, and Mesmero; did they just wander off somewhere, after we saw them?). And Nick Fury could have just been edited out, since it's a few of his other SHIELD agents who figure cleverly into the story. But--The Falcon comes into his own, gloriously; I guess a bell rings because he earns his wings! And Moonstone is a memorable cad, even when he too discovers he's just another expendable pawn in the plans of the Secret Empire. So it's a gutsy storyline from the House Of Ideas in the Seventies.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Cap.......2006-06-29

There's never been a more interesting or important Capt. America story arc than this 1970's classic by the great Steve Englehart. During the height of the national disillusionment that culminated with the Watergate scandal (current events actually shaped the development of the story as it unfolded), Steve Rogers questions what it means to be Captain America, and gives up the role for a number of issues (a daring move at the time). Often imitated, but never equalled. I still keep an eye out for anything that Englehart writes (most recently, the Dark Detective mini-series at DC).

5 out of 5 stars Talk about Sizzle!.......2007-01-18

There are three stories included in this book but what makes it unique is that the main character in the second and third stories appeared in the first. Sexy characters with enough humor to make you laugh out loud. I couldn't put it down but was disappointed when I finished it. I hope there will be more books written like this one. I'm hooked!

3 out of 5 stars The stories weren't bad, but..........2005-05-02

I won't bother recapping the stories because others have already done a wonderful job of that. There were a nice variety of stories in the book (historical to fantasy to contemporary). While the stories themselves weren't bad, they were (for me anyway) easily forgettable. I read the book only days ago and when I started to write the review I had to dig the book out and flip through it to jog my memory because I had already forgotten them. I was also disappointed with the 'erotica' level of the book. I just didn't find it all that...titillating. Still, it was published a decade ago, so maybe back then these stories really 'pushed the edge'.

5 out of 5 stars 4 hot stories........2004-08-21

This is the 1st of the secrets anthologies i've read & I have all of them up to number 9. Although short they are a very exciting read. Like most anthologies you are not going to enjoy all of the stories, but in this case I did. Though saying that the order in which I enjoyed the most is:

The proposal by Ivy Landon, The gift by Jeanie LeGendre & A lady's quest by Bonnie Hamre, the same & The spinner's dream by Alice Gaines.

A great book & i'm looking forward to reading the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Insatiable romantic erotica!.......2004-04-30

I loved this erotic anthology. It awoke my senses from beginning to end. And the best part is that this wonderful series illustrates various sub-categories of romantic erotica -- contemporary, historical and fantasy. My favorite out of the four novellas is Bonnie Hamre's A Lady's Quest. This historical story centers on a young widow's tenacious need to find a lover that could replace her lust for Dougal MacDonald, the gorgeous seventh Duke of Sutherland and notorious womanizer. But she'd never envisaged Dougal's delectable intentions. I savored this story like fine wine. It was as sensual as it was erotic. The Gift is my second favorite novella. I loved the historical elements and delicious erotic scenes. The Spinner's Dream is the weakest one out of the four, but it entertained me nevertheless. And I loved The Proposal. The aforementioned novella reads like a toned down Black Lace novel.

This is a memorable erotic anthology. The novellas' descriptions are rich with sensuality -- guaranteed to satisfy the reader. They're lighter than Black Lace books, but not sugarcoated like the rather formulaic erotic romance novels in Kensington Brava. I cannot wait to pick up the other volumes. Highly recommended...

    Book Description

The original Hebrew title of the book of Proverbs is "Míshlê Shlomoh" ("Proverbs of Solomon"). When translated into Greek and Latin, the title took on different forms. In the Greek Septuagint (LXX) the title became "paroimai paroimiae" ("Proverbs"). In the Latin vulgate the title was "Proverbial", from which the English title of Proverbs is derived.

The authorship of Proverbs has not been easy to determine. Solomon's name appears in Proverbs 1:1, "The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, King of Israel", although this does not necessarily mean that he was the author. It was often the custom to place the name of the King or someone of prominence in writings in order to honour them, or to give those writings more prestige. However, Solomon is often mentioned as someone who has extensive wisdom in the Bible as well as in extra-Biblical literature. It is also said that people came from all over to hear the wisdom of Solomon. The general assumption is that Solomon was a part of the authorship to some extent, but that the book was not solely his work. There are also names linked to other sections of the book, as well as elements of disunity within the book that suggest more than one author.

No wonder the wisest man who ever lived, also became the richest!

I got this as a gift for my son-in-law. I have no knowledge of the book itself other than the person for whom it was purchased seems to like it very much. For me it served its purpose very well.

4 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Useful Filler.......2002-03-17

One of the very nice things about the Call of Cthulhu role playing game from Chaosium is that they rarely publish pure junk or something that doesn't have something useful within its pages, somewhere. The Keeper's Companion is just one of those books, yes, it contains material from the main rules and Cthulhu Now, but expands upon it, it is also laid out in a clear fashion that makes finding things easy. The first section, "Good Cthulhu Hunting", is mainly sage advice for players and written with tongue firmly in cheek, but also makes a good deal of sense as a sort of `Dos and Don'ts' section. It is followed by a section for Keepers, a sort of thirteen ways to improve your game. Again, common sense advice for the foolish GM who might have let his investigators keep the repeating laser cannon they found in the last adventure.

Call of Cthulhu is best played, not people who know the genre cold, but rather by novices who understand the mechanics, not the genre. Lovecraft's world is a mundane one, intruded upon by the not-so-mundane, whether it be something relatively minor as an encounter with a solitary Deep One or a sanity-blasting encounter with Yog-Sothoth, the all-in-one god, it is the character's imperiled peace of mind which will be steadily chipped away by the stuff of nightmares and that which mankind is best to ought not know. Players kept in the dark, fed only what they need or discover on their own, are the best players of all.

There follows the advice section, pages on books of the occult, most or all are actual books, some of which can be found on Amazon, but that you would be better of not reading. Exciting sounding tomes like `The Book of the Dead' or the `Golden Bough' are deadly dull and won't do anything except upset your parents and Tipper Gore. However, it is a nice lexicon for GMs who may want to throw non-Mythos books at their players from time to time. Following that is a handy little section on languages, real and Mythos-related, and their origins. It also includes some badly drawn examples of things like Mi-Go runes and R'lyeh glyphs.

The next section is an expanded and detailed listing of those oh-so-wonderful mind melting pages of actual Mythos tomes- those great books that burn through your sanity, but also give you spells your characters can use. It also adds a few new spells and creatures taken from additional stories written by other authors. Next up is Arcane Antiquities, which is basically magic items and happily it bears little or no resemblance to the back of the AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide. Magic items in Call of Cthulhu are extremely rare. There are a couple of mirrors, a dagger, a ring, and a few other odd devices, so don't expect any +4 swords of dimensional shambler slaying.

Let's face it, cults make life interesting. Even in real life cults provide annual entertainment with their suicidal comet worshiping antics. In Call of Cthulhu they are a somewhat less self-destructive and instead are bent on summon up some moldering nightmare to screw with mankind's mojo. Cultists are great fun, both for Keppers and player alike. As bad as it was, the guys resurrecting Imhotep in the The Mummy Returns were great, if comical and somewhat inept, examples of cultists. Cultists can come in any flavor and hardly need to be justified since they're nuts.

Forensics has always been a hobby of mine. One of the aspects of Call of Cthulhu I have always admired is their inclusion of real world details to really give Keepers and players a sense of how it all works. While Cthulhu Now pretty much gives anyone a brief history of forensics, from the first documented coroner inquests in England right up to DNA evidence- it's all here as well in easy to read and understand terms, complete with bibliography. From the ways people die to firearms and drugs, it's all distilled down into a handy reference.

From the mundane we arrive at Alien Races, a collection of beings and their origins from Deep Ones to the fungi from Yuggoth to the Voormis of the Hyperborea, this section gives the reader a little more detail than the standard entries in the creatures section in the main rule book. Next is Mysterious Places and includes Atlantis (bleah!), Hyperborea, unknown Kadath, Lemuria (also bleah!), unfortunately, they only give us a scant three paragraphs on R'lyeh, the sunken city and tomb of Great Cthulhu. Finally, the last section is on Skills, adds some new ones and explains all in great detail.

All in all a welcome addition to my growing Call of Cthulhu collection, a game that I have played for nearly twenty years. I miss the late eighties/early nineties covers and don't much care for the cover art. However, this is a good addition for Keepers who may want to add a little more detail to their campaigns. Like most of Chaosium's publications, it is well researched and exceptionally well written while being very readable, fun and occasionally funny. It may lack detail in some places, and this is probably it's only real flaw- the alien creatures and places section could have had a little more meat in them, but other than that it's a solid addition...

5 out of 5 stars Waiting for the next one.......2007-09-06

I too, read this series when I was younger and although 15+ years have passed, they remain my favorite series of books. I have been eagerly awaiting the re-release of these books and will purchase them again, as an adult, for a quick, fun read.

I definitely recommend them for someone who's introducing their teenager to reading. I hope they get sucked into the story as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Beloved fantasy stories.......2007-01-13

I first read these books as a 7-year-old second grader. I still have the entire series lying around somewhere. Reading them as a child, I was absolutely enchanted. I re-read them as an adult, and they are still captivating.
These stories are absolutely excellent for young readers, particularly young girls, who want a great role model. Sheila is courageous, strong, and innovative; I love her creative mind. (Wait until you see how she fends off the first perceived enemies in the "other world"!)
Whether you're a parent looking for something to read to/with a child, or an adult fantasy lover, you will enjoy these tales. You can probably find the original six novels for sale used, too. (I was always hoping they would come out with more :)

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2006-08-10

I absolutely love these books. I only found the firt two at a clearence book store in the mall, and I truly fell in love with the books. Granted, they are more for young preteens than teenagers, but those of you who love a great fantasy story, this is a series for you. They should really put these books back into print, it would really be worth it if they would. So many people would love them, and I really hope publishers make them available again soon. I only have the first three, but have been going through pains to get the rest, seeing as how they are all so expensive these days. Keep looking though, it would really be worth your while if you could bye the books.

    5 out of 5 stars About Time!.......2006-06-04

It's about time that they got around to print Secret of the Unicorn queen again. I love these books. They are the perfect adventure fantasy books for young adults. A little romance, some fighting and good triumphs over evil like any good tale. While they were printed over 10 years ago, they have never gone out of fad. Now all we have to do is wait till the other books come out in print too.

4 out of 5 stars An underrated series.......2005-09-30

I read the 'Secret of the Unicorn Queen' many years ago when they were first released, I adored them then and I'm glad to see that things that I loved then are still present now.

The series follows a young teenage girl name Sheila who has a pretty normal life, the only thing out of the ordinary is her relationship with Dr. Rite an eccentric scientist.

When a accident happens involving his affectionate cat and a untested invention Sheila finds herself in the world of Arren, where unicorns are real, magic exists. She meets a group of women determined to free the land from a tyrant. Sheila joins them and can't help but get caught up in the fight.

While the book doesn't break any barriers and doesn't bring anything new to the genre it's still a solidly written story with likable characters, and engaging plot and even a few laughs.

Though intended for younger readers I think this series has appeal for older ones as well and not just as nostalgia.

4 out of 5 stars Informative for the dojo but a little bit bull ____........2007-10-08

If you are interested in learning a martial art that a lot of cops use this book is for you. Its pictures and instructions are very informative if you are going to a Miyama Ryu dojo. However this book contains a lot of stories about student who applied this martial art on the street to hype the modern Kombato. These stories are very obviously bull ___. As a martial artist I find these stories very laughable. Having been in a slew of street fights I find the supposed fight choreography very funny. Bruce Lee should take notes from these guys who supposedly dispatch multiple attackers within seconds. From my experience with multiple attackers it's not quite so easy to throw someone if they are trying to not be thrown. When you do throw them even on concrete they are going to get back up and come at you again. This book claims that if someone gets thrown onto the concrete they will not get back up. I suggest these fibbers all get drunk and go look for some bar fights. So that in a second edition they can give us some realistic fight choreography. Again though this is a good manual if you want to practice Miyama Ryu in a dojo. Just don't swallow the Bull ____.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-12-01

All the beginners tecniques from Miyama are shown here, when you go to the dojo, it's just easier to perform it, since you had seen the pictures and read the explanations of every move.

    5 out of 5 stars Enhanced with more than 700 step-by-step illustrations.......2005-04-12

Now in an updated and expanded third edition, Secrets Of Combat Jujutsu by Miyama Ryu Combat Jujutsu expert D'Arcy Rahming offers instructionally descriptive self-defense against violent attack. Enhanced with more than 700 step-by-step illustrations, as well as essays on the preliminaries of practicing this particular form of the martial arts, Secrets Of Combat Jujutsu is an ideal and "user friendly" manual for any aspiring martial arts practitioner. Also very highly recommended is the companion "how to" instructional manual for students of the Miyama Ryu martial arts is D'Arcy Rahming's Secrets Of Advanced Combat Jujutsu: 3rd Edition.
