5 out of 5 stars Pendragon rocks!.......2007-09-20

Another exciting chapter of the Pendragon adventure, the Pilgrims of Rayne continues to follow Bobby Pendragon, now a 17 year old boy, as he attempts to save another territory from being thrown into utter chaos by the very evil Saint Dane. As with the previous books, the twists and turns never stop! At times, what is revealed was so surprising that I had to stop and take a breather! The tone of this book shifts from the other books in that Bobby is starting to realize that his mission is about all of Halla, not just one territory. Things start to blend and shift. Victory is not as clear-cut as it was before for Bobby, and neither is defeat. And the motivations behind Saint Dane's evil acts are revealed more. Plus more time travel fun!

D.J. McHale is the master of surprise, white-knuckle suspense, as well as laugh out loud fun. This is possibly the best adventure series of all time, for both kids and adults. In my opinion, it is even better than Harry Potter. Grab all of his books today!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-31

This is a great addition to the Pendragon series. I highly recomend reading the first books first.

4 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2007-08-17

Ok, this is book 8 and I can see major events unfolding but I'm a little frustrated as to where this whole thing is going. The territories are all mixed and there are indications of a huge grand scheme. I would like more glimpses into the grand scheme. We can go to 1000 territories and have adventures but it gets a little boring after a while when the stories don't culminate into meaning. I think it's time we enter more into Saint Dane's world and experience that a bit.

5 out of 5 stars review by A Tran.......2007-08-12

You have got to read this book! When you think something will happen, the story does something totally different. I have read the whole series and I love it. It has a sense of adventure when Bobby goes to the different territories. Plus you never know what will happen. The author also uses what happens in the previous books as an effect of something a character in the story might do in another book. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys science fiction or action books. Also the author builds the energy in the story then lets it all out towards the end. Unlike other authors who build until the middle of the story, then the rest is boring.

Book Description

Let the Games Begin....

Quillan is a territory on the verge of destruction. The people have lost control of their own future and must struggle simply to survive. The only chance they have of finding a better life is by playing the Quillan Games. Hosted by a strange pair of game masters, Veego and LaBerge, the games are a mix of sport and combat. They use the people of Quillan as pawns for their amusement as they force them to enter competitions that range from physical battles, to impossible obstacle courses, to computer-driven tests of agility. To triumph in the games is to live the life of a king. To lose is to die.

This is the dangerous and deadly situation Bobby Pendragon finds on Quillan. He quickly realizes that the only way to save this troubled territory is to beat Veego and LaBerge at their own games and dismantle their horrible fun house. But there is more at stake for Bobby. The prize for winning the Quillan Games may be discovering the truth of what it really means a Traveler.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best in the series!.......2007-09-20

The Quillan Games is possibly the best of the Pendragon series! On the territory of Quillan, Bobby finds a dark, grim future where people would literally kill themselves by betting on the deadly and twisted Quillan games, with very dire consequences for losers of the bet. Bobby delves deeper into the society and finds the gut-wrenching truths behind their seemingly crazy behavior. The level of misery and hopelessness that mired this territory wasn't an easy read, but provides a chilling portrait of where other territories could be headed, including ours, if evil had its way. Anyone who is interested in bringing about a better world must read this book and heed its lessons! Ignore them at your own peril!

The whole territory reaks of Saint Dane of course, but Bobby learns that it got that way long before Saint Dane had a hand in it. He was merely "helping it" along. Down the path of their own destruction, that is. Bobby also learns more about the nature of the travelers from the most unlikely of all sources - Saint Dane.

The twists and turns never stop! DJ McHale is the master of surprise, stomach-dropping suspense and of course, adventures that challenges the imagination. Pendragon is possibly the best adventure series ever written. For kids and adults!

First of all, Im not a kid, I'm just too lazy to sign up for amazon.

This book is easily the best in the series and if not, then the never war is.

4 out of 5 stars I Love This Series, But This One Falls a Tiny Bit Short.......2007-06-18

Maybe we aren't supposed to read these books one right after the other.

I was reading "Zadaa" when I received the next two books as a gift, and I got very excited because Zadaa was so engrossing. As soon as I finished the last page I picked up "Quillan". Maybe that was my mistake. As I said, maybe we aren't supposed to read these books one right after the other.

The first 200 pages really dragged. I have never noticed that the author spent so much time describing every detail for us. Maybe it was excessive in this book. I thought at first it was maybe that there is so much backtracking in his books (why does he think that every book is being read by someone who has not read any of the other books of this series?) but it wasn't the backtracking. It was the endless descriptions of uninteresting aspects of Quillan. Saint Dane doesn't even begin to appear until mid-way through the book. Up till that point, I really didn't care what happened on Quillan.

From then on, "Quillan" begins to shine as the other books have done so before it. The battle of wills between Boddy and Saint Dane really are the high points of the novels: will Bobby let himself be drawn in? Will Saint Dane gain a point against him? What is the plan for this territory?

I found myself wishing that the journal pages would finally end so we could find out what was happening with Courtney or Mark. While I suspected some of the revelations that come later in the book, many others were surprises and made for a satisfying ending (well, not for the story - Bobby and others are in the thick of it like never before - but the story getting back on track).

I customarily give the books of this series 5 stars, and had I rated it before page 244, it would have had 2-3 stars, but the author grabbed me again! Overall 4 stars.

The next book is sitting on my desk, but I will wait a little while before jumping into that flume!

P.S. Okay, so I couldn't wait to start the next book, and I'm sure glad I didn't wait. "Pilgrims of Rayne" is awesome!!!

5 out of 5 stars pendragon.......2007-03-15

Have you ever wondered if there was more then one world out there? Well in my book Pendragon there are nine worlds.
My book is a science-fiction book. It is about a traveler named bobby Pendragon. He is 17 years old, and also the leader of the traveler. The book takes place on a world named Quilian. Bobby goes there because Saint Dane went there to try to take over the world.

I thought that this book was really good and I get it 4 out of 5. I do recommend this book because it is a good book and it has a lot of action and it leaves you hanging all the way till the end. I say this book is more for the 10+ age range because some of the humor in the book is for older people and it wouldn't make sense to little kids.

4 out of 5 stars Book Seven scores a Seven on my scale.......2007-03-10

I really didn't find the Quillian Games that bad. It was exciting, and, I guess well-written, but not anything compared to the other books in the series. Boby is on his seventh terriotry, Quillian, a world where games are life, and if you get GAME OVER, your life is over and you are taken away but robotic police officers called dados. But Bobby will soon find out, he is about to become a "Challenger" in the biggest, deadliest games he has ever participated in. Saint Dane is holding the playing cards, and you wil be amazingly surprised at the twist and turns this book holds, and the spectacular truth a the end... it sounds like an amazing book, maybe the best one yet. Here are a few things that did not float my boat.It lacked creativity, and it kind of changed my view of Bobby's personality, which I'm really starting to dislike. It seems like, in one case, that Bobby is trying to be humble, but is still being a total braggart, in more ways than one.
And is it just me, or is D.J. Machale killing off Traveler's a little to easily?! It seems like the Pendragon series is starting to become a darker type; like Harry Potter [I'm talker about the "darkness" level here, not the story] almost. This is a warning to the author: lighten up, get more imagination, retrieve the lost humor, give back Bobby's personality, or you'll lose loads of your fans, and future fans.
Hey, did you see the next Pendragon book!? Book eight, the pilgrims of rayne! Coming May 8, 2007!! Bobby Looks like he 20! Hope its better than the last two.

1 out of 5 stars BAD BAD BAD!.......2007-06-01

I really like the Pendragon book series, and I thought this book would be equally good. However, I was very wrong. The illustrator of 'The Guide to the Territories of Halla' must be different from the book illustrator because these drawings aren't all that great. Bobby looks... terrible. And Spader looks enormous (across). Plus, the book does not include pictures of 2 of the main characters: Courtney and Mark.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! It is short. 48 pages of not-that-great drawings. I am serious. If you buy this book, you will think: 'Why didn't I listen to that kid telling me not to buy this book? It's a RIP-OFF!!'.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-01-16

My 10 year old son couldn't put this series down. He loved it. Highly recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars No No No.......2006-06-17

I am a huge fan of this series, and this really was disappointing. The writing bit was decent, but the illustrations didn't meet my standards whatsoever. i was thoroughly disappointed with a few of the drawings as they didn't even follow the author's descriptions. It was irritating reading a book in a series I enjoy immensly that was so dismal.

2 out of 5 stars A cool idea, but it could have been much better........2005-09-02

I picked this up in a bookstore the other day. I had almost purchased it once, but I am now very glad that I didn't. I looked at the pics. and they were pretty good. (although I do really prefer to view characters and scenes in my own head) I preceded to read the text, which I finished reading in about ten minutes! I'd say that this book was a really cool idea, but for a price around $7, I don't think that this is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars awesome artwork.......2005-08-20

this book brings to life everything i imagined when reading the first several books. i know many people complained about this book not covering all of the territories. i am kind of glad it hasn't covered the books that have not yet been written. i would prefer to use my own imagination first. i believe there will be a follow-up to this book when the rest of the series is written.

THE BATTLE CONTINUES.

The struggle of good versus evil continues as Bobby Pendragon follows Saint Dane to the territory of Zadaa. Saint Dane's influence has fueled the fire of discontent between two warring tribes: the Rokador and the Batu. This is also the territory where the Traveler Loor lives as a member of the Batu. Together she and Bobby must work to thwart Saint Dane's efforts to destroy Zadaa.

But as Bobby pursues Saint Dane, he begins to notice changes in himself. He is no longer a flip kid looking for excitement. He is a young man beginning to see this quest as more than a series of adventures. He is also learning that as a Traveler, he had powers no normal human should have.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say.......2007-05-07

Hands down the best series I have laid my eyes on.

5 out of 5 stars A review for a great book.......2007-05-06

This book is packed with twists in the plot, and suspense that make you feel as if you are on a roller coaster. With two different stories filled with adventure and sprinkled with love, you feel like you're with the characters. Whenever you think you have the answer to what's going on, you want to shout it out to the characters, but each time you are soon to be proven wrong. Once you start reading this book, it will be torture just to put it down. Whenever you aren't guessing what's going to happen next, you are cheering for Bobby because you think he's going to win, or worrying because he's going to lose this battle. He is always changing position in this battle, so you feel like you're on a roller coaster, just like what I said before.

After five battles against the shape-shifting demon named Saint Dane, Bobby Pendragon is swept into another battle yet again. Saint Dane's main goal is to destroy Halla, all places, planets, and times, for a still unknown reason. Using flumes, the connection between places in time in the universe called Territories (there are ten), Bobby chases Saint Dane into the next territory, Zadaa. As a Traveler, the only people who can use the flumes, Bobby must stop the evil Traveler, Saint Dane, from reaching his evil goal. On the dessert planet of Zadaa, people are facing famine, and two tribes who were once at peace are getting close to a quick and deadly war. The aggressive tribe, the Batu, suspect that the clever tribe, the Rokador, are holding all the water from the underground rivers. Bobby, with help from Loor and Alder, the Travelers from Zadaa and Denduron, must thwart Saint Dane's plans to push Zadaa into chaos, or else Halla will be one step closer to destruction.
Meanwhile, on Bobby's home Territory of Second Earth, Bobby's friends are facing the strangest problems. Mark Dimond, pure geek, has joined a club called Sci-Clops. Things are going great for him until his enemy, Andy Mitchell, joins the club. After joining the club, Mitchell has been nicer to Mark, and Mark is getting suspicious. To add to Mark's problems, he is also worrying about how Bobby is doing on Zadaa, and how Bobby's other friend, Courtney Chetwynde is doing. Courtney has gone to a boarding school, and has gotten a new boyfriend. Of course, her boyfriend and the new Andy Mitchell turn out to be someone else...

Notes:

-This is actually my book report.

-For people starting the Pendragon series, you should start at the first book.

-It has a plot very similar to the first Pendragon book, The Merchant of Death.

I hope you enjoy this book, it's a real Tum-Tigger!

The story begins with Bobby Pendragon wearing clothing every where too hide his skin walking next too Loor in an arena. Were Loor lives water is more valuable than gold. In the Zadaa he will meet his enemy Saint Daine and try too stop his evil plan. Saint Daine is a evil demon.

Ok, first off the library review is totally and completely wrong about his book. I really liked it. I think that they did develop the characters a lot more than that review makes them out to. We learned a lot about Loor, and about Courtney, also we got a spine tingling new development in those last few pages. I just cant wait until I get to read the next book.

Fifteen-year-old Bobby Pendragon has visited the alternate dimension of Denduron (The Merchant of Death), explored the endangered underworld territory of Cloral (The Lost City of Faar), and traveled back in time on his own planet Earth to uncover the evil plot of the fiendish Saint Dane--the evil force behind all these interworld exploits (The Never War). Now he "flumes" (a kind of time/space travel) into the territory of Veelox expecting to wage another battle against evil... only to find all is peaceful. He quickly discovers the peace is due to the fact that most of the citizens of Veelox have become addicted to Lifelight, a virtual reality lifestyle. Unfortunately, what once seemed so safe and enjoyable has taken a frightening twist, and Bobby must rely on a Veelox Traveler named Aja to help him find a solution--and save the territory. His antagonistic relationship with the brilliant Aja grates on his nerves as she spits out cryptic words of wisdom: "Salvation here can be found in only one place: the imagination. If you can't understand that, you might as well flume out right now."

Fans of D.J. MacHale's Pendragon series will enjoy this latest entry, and look forward to the forthcoming fifth title. The attraction of the series is not so much great writing or character development as fast-paced action and edge-of-seat danger. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Fifteen-year-old Bobby Pendragon arrives on this territory in pursuit of the evil Saint Dane, but all is peaceful on Veelox -- because it's deserted. 4 out of 5 stars Not Living Up To Expectations.......2007-02-27

This book was pretty good especially the amazing detail of all of the crazy things such as lifelight. However, thats just as always (especially the things on Cloral.) Although it was detailed I really wasnt as " i cant wait to read this book whn i get home" as i was with the others. Its definatley worthy of a 4 star but nothing more because it kind of lagged in certain spots like with lifelight the same thing keeps happening. But as i said earlier, its worthy of a 4 star but nothing compared to the others; I hope book is going to be good and all the rest (especially book 8.)

in my opinion, this is the best installment in the pendragon series. i read it all in a few days. thats amazing becuz i'm one of the slowest readers in my class. :P this is an amazing book with the imagery, amusing metaphors and such. i won't say much for i fear i will ruin the ending, but i can say that this will be an excellent collection to your books. PENDRAGON RULES!

5 out of 5 stars revealing.......2006-07-15

The fourth book in the series has the same idea as the first three but has a wicked, sudden ending. It gets you ready to begin the fifth book as soon as you've finished.

But what makes this book better is that a lot more is revealed in this book than in the others. It kinda refreshes the series to keep as in depth as it has been. Satisfying fantasy read.

5 out of 5 stars Pendragon: A Journey through Time and Space.......2006-04-17

The Pendragon series is a group of journals written by Bobby Pendragon. Bobby sends his journals back home through a special ring that he wears. Bobby's friends, Courtney and Mark safeguard his journals at home. Bobby used to consider himself as normal, but not anymore. Ever since Bobby's uncle told Bobby that he had a special ability to travel through time and space, Bobby hasn't known what to think. The special ability he has lets him travel to different territories, which are like different dimensions or worlds. There are ten territories, and each one is different. When the ten travelers reach a territory, they find that it is at a turning point. The territory could either fall into chaos or advance on. There is only one traveler from each territory, and all of them must work together to save all the territories. The travelers want to save every place from absolute destruction. The only traveler who wants chaos for the territories is the villain, Saint Dane. He can wants to control them all.

This book takes place in a territory called Veelox. Veelox is a very advanced civilization. There are no wars on Veelox, because almost everyone is living in their own virtual reality, which is a lot like a very long, perfect, dream. They call these times they spend in the chambers 'jumps'. Pendragon was told by Veelox's traveler, Aja, that everything was fine. As it turned out, Aja wanted the challenge for herself. Pendragon soon found that Velox was in trouble and wondered what he could do to help. The entire territory would be doomed if people choose to keep living in virtual reality, because the food supply was almost gone. Aja showed him a disc containing a virus, her life's work, that would make people's jumps less than perfect. This would make things more like reality, which would cause people to exit their jumps and return to reality. The virus worked as planned, that is, until the virus became too powerful. The jumps soon turned into nightmares. The injuries and death sustained during the jump, became reality. As it turns out Saint Dane manipulated Aja into making the virus with it's flaws. Once again it's up to Pendragon to save the entire universe, and the only way he can do it is to go into the virtual reality chamber. This book would be enjoyed by lovers of science fiction, but I do suggest that you read the previous books in the series so you can better understand the special traveler terms.

Breaking the rules

Just when fifteen-year-old Bobby Pendragon thinks he understands his purpose as a Traveler -- to protect the territories of Halla from the evil Saint Dane -- he is faced with an impossible choice. The inhabitants of Eelong are in danger of being wiped out by a mysterious plague. The only way Bobby can stop it is to bring the antidote from another territory. Since moving items between territories is forbidden by the Traveler rules, if Bobby chooses to save Eelong he could endanger himself, his friends, and the future of every other being in Halla.

I need to buy this book, if only because I'm mentioned on 76 pages of it, mostly in phrasings that Freud would have a field day with.

Thank you, Amazon, for the Search Inside! feature.

5 out of 5 stars excellent!!.......2007-03-02

My son got me hooked on these books. We recently moved to India and I was dying for something to read. His friends introduced this series to him and after watching him chose to read these books over video and computer games, as well as TV, I knew I had to give it a shot. I was impressed. It constantly keeps a good flow of movement and action. Like my son, I had a hard time putting this down. We have always been Harry Potter fans, and I dare say I think this series is even better.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!.......2007-01-29

This book is really imaginative and fun to read. I think this book delves more into the nature of the Travelers. It just makes you want to come back for more!

4 out of 5 stars pendragon.......2006-10-11

Bobby Pendragon traveled to another territories. He went to find to see what Saint Dane is doing. Mark and Courtney found out what was happening to Eelong. Then they traveled to Coral to get the cure. Bobby finds the new traveler of Eelong. During the time Bobby found out that Gunny was there with the human gars at Black Water, he helped to get the gars safe to the rest of the gars at Black Water.

The Eelong traveler helps Bobby defeat Saint Dane. The book is okay, but from inside-people I heard that the other books are better. There were other books that I liked better. The other book I liked better is Small Steps (creator of HOLES). This is my first time reading the series, so I don't know everything that happens before Black Water.

5 out of 5 stars The Pendragon Cycle.......2004-07-20

I like fantasy (i.e. Lord of the Rings, other books by tolkien, books by C.S. lewis especially cronicles of narnia, perelandria etc.) so when i picked this up from the library shelf i fell in love w/ it. 10 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Not too shabby!.......2002-06-21

My best friend was into this type of book early on, and eventually he won me into them. I started with the Lord of the Rings, and was pretty much hooked. Then I saw these books on his shelf, and decided to give them a shot. Rather instantly I was hooked! The characters in each book are well thought out and the reader gets to know and enjoy every aspect of the story. Though by Arthur it became a little convulated, the plotline was seamless and excellent. Keen Beans Mr. Lawhead!

5 out of 5 stars The Pendragon Cycle.......2000-04-01

Taliesin was really the first fantasy book I have read. Mostly I read star trek stuff and chriton books. So this was a real turn-around. The second I started reading Taliesin I was hooked. I couldn't put the book down. Though it's mideival writing style does slow the reader down the over all story and the characers are what you fall in love with. I am almost done with pendragon the fourth book in the series. This is what started me on fantasy books.

CLORAL

The second installment in an epic series of adventures

Fourteen-year-old Bobby Pendragon is not like other boys his age. His uncle Press is a Traveler, and, as Bobby has learned, that means Uncle Press is responsible, through his journeys, for solving interdimensional conflict wherever he encounters it. His mission is nothing less than to save the universe from ultimate evil. And he's taking Bobby along for the ride.

Fresh from his first adventure on Denduron, Bobby finds himself in the territory of Cloral, a vast world that is entirely covered by water. Cloral is nearing a disaster of huge proportions. Reading the journals Bobby sends home, his friends learn that the desperate citizens of the endangered floating cities are on the brink of war. Can Bobby -- suburban basketball star and all-around nice guy -- help rid the area of marauders, and locate the legendary lost land of Faar, which may hold the key to Cloral's survival?

5 out of 5 stars A real tum-tigger...hobey ho!.......2007-07-07

Before I begin, let me say that I'm an adult (to give this review some context).

I read "The Merchant of Death" (Pendragon #1) a couple of weeks before ordering this book. I enjoyed "Merchant". I thought it was inventive and unusual, and it certainly addresses issues that young adults face. I'm sure kids enjoy reading books where their peers are heroes.

This book is even better. I say that for two reasons. The setting of the first book is quite grim. That was appropriate for the story it told, but it was kind of a downer, reading about those people being exploited. This book's setting is incredible - a world covered entirely by water where humans live on floating, barge-like habitats. I love water, and if I could somehow visit that world, I would do so in a heartbeat.

The other reason I like this book better is that the new Traveler we meet is incredibly endearing. I like Loor. She's a great person to have at your side. However, the Traveler we meet in this story is very funny, and that makes this book a lighter read (in tone) than the first one. He's also flawed, though, which makes things interesting. I relate to him better than I relate to Loor. (Does she have a flaw? I don't think I've spotted it yet.)

Overall, I recommend this book with a big smile on my face. It's a good ride, the characters are endearing, the setting incredible, the themes well developed, and it leaves you wanting more.

See you at Grolo's! Last one there buys the Sniggers!

Pendragon by D.J mathhale is a great book that I would recommend to kids of all ages. It starts with a 10 year old kid playing with his mom in their back yard and the kid misses the ball and he runs after it and he comes back and his mom is GONE. Then he finds out that his mom is the world`s best DRAGON RIDER!! He hears a very loud roar and it was his mom's old pet dragon and it was his now and he takes a better look at it and it was the biggest red dragon the world has ever seen. So the very tall lizard tells him that his mom has been kidnapped by a very powerful human bean and they set of to TRY and save his mom. How I can describe Jack he is a very smart tech genius he just finds out he is the ONE. Well what he thinks the one means that he can Dodge bullets like a movie he saw. He finds that the dragons name is Alroce and the dragon is the last well only one of the red dragons left. And so Jack can fight this very powerful wizard so he starts training with his pet dragon.I would this book to anyone that likes dragons action and very intence sword fighting Pendragon is a great book that I would recamend to kids of all ages.

Bobby Pendragon is a 14-year-old boy, and he is like no other boy his age. After being swept away from his last mission on a territory named Denduron, Bobby finds himself on a floating city named Grallion in the territory of Cloral. This city is about the size of New York State! And it is a floating island in an ocean the size of this planet! So far Bobby has had a pretty goodtime, meting new friends and just hanging out on Grallion, until the evil Saint Dane shows up under the alias Zy Roder his mission is to take over halla, and rule it evilly. Halla is everything that ever happened, will happen, and time, which is everything. Bobby's mission is nothing less than to save the universe from ultimate evil. But Saint Dane is much more powerful and can con people into helping him. This team of 4(Bobby's Uncle Press who got Bobby into all of this, Spader his brand new friend he met on Grallion, and Loor the best warrior and a friend to Bobby, and of course Bobby) must beat Saint Dane and time is running out he it creating chaos on the habitats(the floating islands)so he can rule halla and the universe will be evil and Saint Dane's wish will be true. But Bobby is going to try to stop that. Bobby's 2 best friends (Courtney and Mark) can't talk to Bobby because he is in a different world so instead Bobby has giving Mark a magic ring that transports letters. So, to talk to his 2 best friends he writes letters of what's happening, and Mark and Courtney read them, and are with Bobby all the way. Bobby and the team are about to make their first move against this evil mastermind.

Every Pendragon book is fabulous. This book is really fun and takes you to a great planet. The storyline is just great. You'll love it!

Very interesting character development in this Pendragon continuation. The Lost City of Faar presents some well developed plot twists and does so in a clean/ pure style that readers of all ages will appreciate. As some other reviewers have pointed out, there are a few grammatical issues that pop up here and there that may annoy highly analytical readers but the quality of the material surpasses such flaws.

5 out of 5 stars Best Time Travel Story Ever Written!.......2007-09-20

In the Never War, Bobby Pendragon time travels to Earth's past through the mysterious flumes. He had a clear mission. He was to prevent a well-known historical disaster before it starts. The idea of changing the course of human history was as exciting as it gets. But he learns that by tinkering with the past, he was about to make the most deadly mistake of all! Not just for him and his friends, but for the future of the entire human race as well! Which was exactly what Saint Dane wanted. He laid a trap for Bobby to fall into, which will mean the destruction of Earth's past, present and future. One that the human race may never recover from. Will Bobby realize Saint Dane's evil plans in time? Can he do the right thing even when the right thing is very hard to do? Well, hobey-ho, let's go!

5 out of 5 stars Well-written and thought provoking for adults and kids........2007-07-07

I've read books 1-5 in the "Pendragon" series. I thought that 1 and 5 were good. I felt that 2 and 4 were really good, but this book, to me, is the standout of the series (so far).

What MacHale has done in "The Never War" - and kids may not realize this -is take a mysterious piece of American history and use it as a backdrop for Bobby Pendragon's third Halla-based adventure. The story is set in a place both familiar and different to the reader. It takes place on Earth...in the past and in the future.

I don't want to go into the plot too much. I'd much rather you learn about that from the book than from me. Suffice it to say this, though - MacHale weaves a plot-web of gang warfare, genocide, and really tough choices to explain the destruction of the airship Hindenburg.

What I said about 'really tough choices' is unquestionably the most compelling part of the story. Bobby learns firsthand what it means to choose the lesser of two evils...and you feel for him.

I recommend this book whole-heartedly. If you're a parent reading this review, and your son or daughter reads the "Pendragon" series, you should check this one out. It's thought-provoking, and it would be a good springboard from which to discuss some tough issues with your child.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss It!.......2007-04-13

Pendragon The Never War, by D.J. Machale
is a exciting fantasy book that I would not recommend to anyone who is dull and boring.
The story starts as Bobby Pendragon and his friend, Spadder, fell from a flume then found themselves surrounded by old fashion gangsters. After they are taken by the gangsters Pendragon had to give them the ring that ties him to 1st, 2nd and, 3rd earth. Now Bobby is in the bosses office waiting for a chance to escape. After he gets out he received news that his uncle is dead. In dread he runs into someone who his dad saved in the past.
Bobby pendragon is a very smart young man who is a pretty brave guy. He usually finds himself saving people while he is in the middle of trying to focus on something with his friend, Spadder, by his side. One way that Bobby gets himself out of trouble is by distracting the bad guys by talking. Spadder is a very light headed guy who acts before he thinks. He often runs of when he is mad but he normally follows Pendragon. He doesn't call Bobby Pendragon Bobby, He calls him Pendragon.
I think you should read this book because it always leaves you hanging.

5 out of 5 stars First Earth.......2006-11-08

First Earth... A place mostly like our world, but completely located in the past. 1937 to be exact. Fifteen-Year-Old Bobbby Pendragon, accomponied by Spader, the traveler from "Cloral" head to First Earth on another hunt for Saint Dane. They get a rude awakening when they land out of the flume, as two gangster thugs are there to greet them. They are no sort of friendly. The traveler from "First Earth" save them from the gangsters, and bring them back to the safety of the Manhattan Tower Hotel where Bobby and Spader take jobs as bellhops. When will Saint Dane show himself this time? That is up to you to find out. Be aware though, there are many twists and turns, up to the very very last page.

5 out of 5 stars great setting.......2006-07-15

The setting of this book in the early 1930's in NYC makes for a great adventure. It's a nice addition to the Pendragon series.

The whole disaster idea for this book was an excellent idea. This book is just as exciting, if not better than the first two books in the adventure. Hats off to the third book.
