4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable says a middle aged man.......2007-08-07

From the perspective of a man in his middle fifties, I have found Meg Cabot's adventure books, the Lightning Girl books and the Mediator books are very enjoyable.
I read YA books for their light content and fairly happy ending. A series like this allows for some character development that is often not found in adult adventure fare.
There are many of us who were hooked on the YA genre as our children went through this age group. When they stepped up to Dickens or Evanovich, we often returned to these books.
So often they deal with social issues neglected by adult genre fiction and made deadly dull by the more "literate" novels. Meg Cabot's books are no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Sixth Sense.......2007-07-18

Another best-seller from meg cabot this book aboards the sixth sense like cabot has never done.
A serie that promises a normal girl that suddenly has to deal with completely new problems.
Diferent from the mediator because this girl receive her abilities when she is sixteen so you see how she deals with it since the beginning.
Such a great book that I ordered it from another country.

5 out of 5 stars When Lightning Strikes: #1.......2006-12-23

I read this whole book in one night. It was amazing. It was funny, and suspenseful. I just couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next.
I suppose if you are looking for an in-depth description, you could look at some of the other freakishly-long reviews. This review is just meant to tell you that I loved this book so much.

5 out of 5 stars When Lightning Strikes.......2006-10-16

When Lightning Strikes is about an ordinary girl who, like the rest of us girls, goes to school, has a crush, gets good grades, has problems, and has one weird family she loves. Her best friend loves her guts but forces her to walk home when she could've driven home in a car because her friends thinks she has a lot of meat on her due to some football jock of an idiot. That's where the glitch comes in. She has super powers. Yeah: you heard right; she has superpowers.

Book Description

During a magical storm, romance writer Alaina Costanza is hurled back in time, into the Western world of her latest novel. There she is kidnapped by her own character, a ruthless outlaw known only as Killian. Thrown together by fate, Alaina and Killian will discover a love too magnificent to last a single lifetime. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lightning Did Indeed Strike.......2007-04-08

When Lightning Strikes is not your average time-traveling romance. It introduces you to two very interesting, very unique characters. Alaina Costanza (Lainie), an edgy, wise-cracking romance writer with a rough past, and John Killian, or just Killian as he is mainly known, the villian from the historical western she is in the midst of writing. So when she gets struck by lightning, she gets way more than she bargained for!

This book made me laugh, and at the same time it pulled at my heart. The chemistry between the two of them and their trying to fight it, was in a way, realistic and heartwrenching. Even though this is a romance, I didn't know how it was going to end, it was a real nail-biter! I couldn't finish soon enough, and when I did, it left me with a fulfilled feeling. I couldn't recommend this book more!

3 out of 5 stars good escapism read, I guess.......2004-02-24

Let me start out by announcing that I'm not a romance reader, per se. The aspect that I liked most about this story was the unusual main character, Alaina. She is not your typical female used in a romance. This one has a very rough past. The plot of having Alaina (a writer) traveling through time to end up in one of her own romance novels set in the wild west was pure escapism and lots of fun. That being said, I had a huge problem with the two main characters. There wasn't enough plot development to understand why they would have have such a deep abiding love for each other - oh wait, that bit about reincarnation. Perhaps I'm being picky but I didn't feel any attachment to the characters love connection which, I believe, was kinda the whole point.

5 out of 5 stars Lightning Strikes a chord . . ........2003-06-17

"When Lightning Strikes" definitely struck a chord with me.

The basic plot of the book is as follows. Alaina (Lainie) Costanza is a romance writer, but she's no wimpy, frou-frou darling. Nope, she chain-smokes, drinks on occasion, wears tacky outfits, and is generally a hell-raiser. There are reasons for her behavior I'll get to in a moment; suffice it to say that only two things are keeping her together at this point: her writing talent, and her teenage daughter, Kelly.

John Killian is an outlaw, a former Texas Ranger who feels like he's lost everything. His wife died years ago and he couldn't save her; once that happened, he felt his soul rip apart, and decided to live down to his reputation. Now he's the leader of a notorious bunch of outlaws.

How do these two relate? It's not as simple as it appears at first. At first, Lainie gets thrown back from her time (early 1990s) to Killian's time (late 1800s); Killian isn't exactly overjoyed to see her. Lainie is in a state of shock at first, thinking it's all a dream.

But it's not.

Instead, Lainie finds out slowly that Killian is her soulmate. And that she, in an earlier life, was the wife that left him alone. And as she and Killian learn to trust each other again, they overcome nearly insurmountable problems.

Item 1: Lainie was gangraped at least once. Used to do drugs. Her parents abandoned her, and the foster system didn't work. Her daughter is the result of the rape; she kept her daughter and loves her, which shows enormous strength of character. (As if being creative and reaching for her dreams wasn't enough strength for anyone; well, this is a romance, and I suppose this is a bigger "hook" to grab the reader.)

Item 2: Killian was a Texas Ranger, as I said before, and was a very good law enforcement officer. He was married to Emily (Lainie's previous incarnation), and was sent off on a mission to Mexico. While there, he got thrown in jail; she waited for a long time, then, (perhaps after being raped and abused herself because her husband was gone -- she lived on the Texas frontier alone), ended up killing herself. That's how John became a villain; he felt like he must be one, because his beloved wife had left him like that. And he blamed himself for being thrown in jail, and couldn't forgive himself.

Both characters are looking for salvation, and in this book, they find it. In each other, granted, but that's what they needed. Both needed a second chance with the other, to be able to love and be loved in return. They get that chance through an unusual twist; they don't want to give it up, yet if Lainie doesn't return to the 20th century, Kelly will be put in foster care -- and Lainie knows all about _that_.

So, she and Killian believe it's a choice between love of parent for child and love for each other, and both make love to each other with a sadness that is palpable. Instead of being joyous, they are miserable; they know this is all they are ever likely to have. Yet, how could they pass it up?

How Ms. Hannah brought off the obligatory happy ending is up to you to find out; I will say that I enjoyed it and found it reasonably realistic. (I still wonder, though, how Killian found the 20th century, what he found to do, how Lainie was able to get him the ID she'd so blithely talked about, and what Kelly thought of him. This book demands a sequel.)

So, even though some of the historical details one of the editorial reviews talked about were missing (Lainie doesn't spend much time on detail; she does talk about what the men wear and a lot about the scenery), this book deserves five stars. For more than one reason; it's not every book that shows that love, even a love like this, can be funny, sexy, sweet, poignant, and sad, all by turns.

Yet love, in real life, _is_ like this. And that is why I'd give "When Lightning Strikes" five stars.

Two more things. The character of Viloula is wonderful; check her out. She might live in the late 1800s, but she's a modern woman indeed, and I believed fully in her characterization. Also, Ms. Hannah is to be commended for how she writes her love scenes; the dialogue and description crackles with life, and it shows exactly how Lainie loses what barriers she has left and surrenders to love. And to herself.

Highly recommended. And by far the best book Ms. Hannah has ever written.

1 out of 5 stars YAWN.......2002-09-06

After reading other wonderful time travel stories by other authors, I was excited to come across this one. What a disappointment. While the first 1/3 of the book kept my interest, after that it was a struggle to even go on with it. I ended up just skimming the pages to get through it. At first, it was interesting with the time travel and her confusion with the whole thing. After that, tho, it just got old. I didn't find the characters interesting, and I felt like it was just the same drama repeated page after page. I got tired of her crying. Do yourself a favor, and spend you money on "Knight In Shining Armour." THAT is a great time travel story!

5 out of 5 stars Time Travel For Love!! If Only................................2001-10-01

Theirs is the kind of love every woman dreams about whether she admits it or not. To love and be loved completely, across time, no matter the barriers, to change the past, thus changing the future, it boggles the mind and it takes a very special writer, story teller, to make it believable, and Kristin Hannah does it as if retelling her own story. Brovo Ms Hannah. One of my all time favorite time-travel romances, and one that I plan to keep and read again, and again and again..................

"When Lightning Strikes Twice" is the first book that I have read by Barbara Boswell, it was a wonderful romantic story and I'm looking forward to reading another by this author.

4 out of 5 stars I thought this book was better writtten ........1999-05-11

I have read a short romance or two from her and found it less tantilzing than this romance. The characters are solid. they do not fuss over other peoples opinions like some books do. they decided they like each other and move from there. While there is a little come hither it does not reck the book. This author has a better frame work Than say the recent romances by catherine coulter but not nearly as good as the old Brenda Joyce.

    5 out of 5 stars I love Barbara Boswell.......1998-12-15

I read everything she ever writes and have for years. This book is a very good one. If you like snappy dialogue, wit and hot sex, you'll love Barbara Boswell.

Last week, at the age of ninety-three, affluent Townsend Tilden Sr. died. His widow is twenty-five year old Misty Tilden, a former nude lap dancer, who married Townsend three years ago. Apparently, the widow has produced a new will that leaves her inheriting the entire estate. Townsend's irate blood family has descended on the law firm of Saxon Associates to insure that the alleged new will is declared fraudulent. With her aunt, working a case in a Philadelphia courtroom, Rachel Saxon is forced to deal alone with the Tilden clan, who make numerous demands on her. Meanwhile, Misty has hired Quintin Cormack, of the law firm Cormack and Son, to handle her side of the case.

Rachel and Quinton have faced each other on previous suits since the man returned to town about a year ago. This time around, both desperately want to win. However, when Rachel meets Quinton's infant son, she reassesses her outlook and love vs. the law soon becomes the question. If the two attorneys can survive this cantankerous case that pits them on opposite sides of the table, Rachel and Quinton might discover the long term relationship both deserve.

A Barbara Boswell book is always worth reading and her latest novel, WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE, will embellish her reputation for distinctive works of fiction. The amusing story line will remind readers of the screwball relationship comedies of the thirties, but in a modern setting; and the lead protagonists seem like a nineties version of Tracey-Hepburn. Once again, the great Ms. Boswell demonstrates her WINNING WAYS with another fantastic novel that readers will gorge on because most fans will agree that WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE is twice the fun of most contemporary tales on the market today.

4 out of 5 stars Oh, what could have been!.......2004-04-20

The tale of a man who can't escape his past and a woman who can't escape her future. Tanner McKnight is a ruthless bounty hunter. Abigail Bliss is a churchgoing schoolmarm. A dissimilar pair filled with lust. A dissimilar pair who cannot possibly have a future together, or can they? Abigail and the reader think it is a possibility. Now the author must convince the hero, and this is where the book's complexity settles -- in the convincing.

Abigail Bliss is traveling on an Oregon-bound wagon train. Hidden from her is the fact she is a very rich heiress; her father feels that withholding this vital piece of information is better. Tanner McKnight is the hard-core gentleman on her trail. His mission - to bring sweet Abigail home to Chicago. His downfall -- sweet Abigail falls in love with him.

To Rexanne Becnel's credit, she pens a great historical novel. The information surrounding the traveling conditions in a wagon train is phenomenal. Likewise, the added bonus of the fictional mouse creatures is a wonderful attachment. It is definitely a source of humorous relief from the journey's struggle.

However, it is the off and on love interest that puts a strain on the story. Does he love me? Does he want me? Do I love him? Do I want him? Holy moly. End it! The story just ran out of steam. If only the author had cut some indecisiveness from the four-hundred and six pages, this would have been a dynamite story.

This book irritated me several times when i was reading it. I was on the verge of leaving it..The plot is good and the story was intresting,it makes u want to know what happens next.THAT is the only thing i grant the writer. But sometimes it got really boooring. The heroine sometimes kept describing the forest around her for pages. In the end i started to skip these passages..

But the MAIN disappointment in this book is that i didnt feel the characters were actually in love. The whole thing was lust..Throughout the whole story the 2 characters did not have a proper talk.To clarify myself: The hero was a complicated person who has had his share of hardships in the world. He didnt trust anyone and had the worst childhood. You expect Abigail (the heroine) to help him open up right?well no she doesnt! The writer doesnt even get in this territory..The heroine didnt soften the hero although there were many parts in the story where a small talk with him or a simple gesture like a hug would've helped him get over the pain. But instead the heroine almost never did anything of the sort..

Also, one of the most irritating things were that the heroine kept nagging the hero to tell her that he loved her when he didnt want to say it..She kept nagging for the last few chapters ,it was VERY annoying!

To make a long story short,i found that the story was about desire and lust..I wasnt convinced they were in love..AT ALL!
They didnt know each others personality too well, they didnt know each one's inside..If u know what i mean..

This is the first Rexanne Becnel story i read and certainly the last..Thank you for reading..Bye

I couldn't finish this novel. Up until I abandoned all hope for it, I kept gritting my teeth at the idiocy of the heroine. It seemed like on every other page she was wondering if the hero merely lusted after her or if he actually cared for her. Repeatedly, the hero tells her he doesn't want anything to do with her, that she's just inspires lust in him, and that he's only with her for the reward money. Then, she'd vow to leave her pride in tact and treat him cooly. Two pages later, she's throwing herself at him again. Then, when he once again brushes her off, the whole routine starts anew. Grrrr! How frustrating. It seemed like the heroine would have squatted and squawked like a chicken on Main Street if the hero had wanted her to.

That deficiency in the heroine ruined what could have been a good romance novel.

5 out of 5 stars Difficult to put down.......2000-05-09

Robert Bliss and his daughter Abby a school teacher travel by wagon with a large group headed for Oregon, fleeing from Abby's grandfather who wants her brought to him. Abby doesn't know that she even has a grandfather, father to her recently deceased mother Margaret, and her father doesn't tell her. All she knows is that they left their home in a hurry. Tanner, a bounty hunter is looking for Abby to take her to her very wealthy grandfather. Knowing only the father's name (who by the way has started using the last name Morgan instead of Bliss as he is certain his father-in-law would stop at nothing to get his granddaughter), he sets out among the traveling wagons looking for the elusive heir. When Tanner meets Abby, after keeping her from falling in mud, they find themselves deeply attracted to one another. Robert does not like this 'no good outlaw' especially since he wants his daughter to marry a dull preacher. Tanner, hoping to find the girl he seeks, hires on with this group as a hunter. This way he can narrow down which of these women is really the missing Bliss heir and at the same time flirt with the beautiful Abby. When he finally discovers she is the missing heir (much to his disappointment), he takes her. This is a great story about a man who doesn't feel he is good enough for this prim, proper and soon to be wealthy woman although he is quickly falling in love with her. Abby can't help the way he makes her feel and will stop at nothing to make this handsome and wonderfully protective man hers. the first Rexanne Becnel book I have had the pleasure of reading but difinitely not my last.

5 out of 5 stars Liberated Pioneer Woman gets the bounty hunter!!.......1999-01-02

An easy read novel set on the Oregon trail, filled with intrigue, romance and a touch of women's liberation in the 19th century. Enjoyed this almost as much as Geralyn Dawson's books with a similar setting. You'll find yourself delving into all this authors books if this is your first novel by Becnel you have read.

When Lightning Strikes Twice Marci Alborghetti

"When my doctor found a new melanoma after I'd been officially `clean' for six years, I was stunned. It was like starting over with the original diagnosis. Except worse."

For people who've worked hard to overcome an addiction, become a better spouse, or adopt a healthy, positive lifestyle, a new addiction or a second descent into illness can also represent personal failure.

Even more disturbing to those of us facing a repeated crisis is the initial impact it may have on our faith and relationship with God. When we find ourselves facing again the very thing that we've counted on God to prevent, we can feel betrayed. Shock, disbelief, rage, blame—all these feelings can come to bear on our life.

These pages explore all of these feelings and examine how people in the grip of repeat tragedy experienced the event, faced their circumstances, learned to cope, and found their way to a stronger faith and deeper trust in God. Using life stories, biblical profiles, and illustrations from our culture, each chapter will define and describe a stage or emotion in the experience of a second tragedy. At the end of each chapter are a prayer conversation with God, questions for reflection, suggested Bible readings, and activities designed to assist in dealing with a return tragedy.

This warm and welcoming book is a perfect companion for anyone experiencing that second strike of lightning.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for yourself or a gift for a loved one.......2005-04-12

Author Marci Alborghetti is proof positive that one can have setbacks in life and move on to make the world a better place. In her new book When Lightning Strikes Twice (Twenty-Third Publications, January 2005, paperback 142 pages), she offers hope and encouragement to those facing the recurrence of difficult circumstances in their own lives. Following a victorious bout with cancer and after six years of good health, Alborghetti received the devastating news - lightening had struck her for a second time: the cancer was back. She found this second battle to be much more difficult than the first, and her experience led her to examine why that was the case. She found that others on similar journeys had the same experience.

In the book, Alborghetti shares her own story, as well as those of others who found themselves faced with repeated tragedies. Marci's words of encouragement throughout the book spur the reader to proactive solutions and to a greater reliance on one's relationship with God in the face of life's challenges. Each chapter closes with a unique prayer, questions for reflection and concrete action steps. Though aimed at those who may be facing recurrent difficulties, the book has merit and value for anyone looking to transcend a time of pain, sadness or personal grief.
