Book Description
"How did it all begin?" "What happens when we die?" These are just two of the questions Reverend Oliver "Buzz" Thomas hears centrist Christians asking as he travels across the U.S. and he knows that their voices are not being heard. They're people of faith, not of politics, and they want more from their religion than a voter's guide. In 10 Things Your Minister Wants to Tell You: But Can't Because He Needs the Job, Rev. Thomas has written a book that will become the liberal Christian answer to The Purpose Driven Life. He writes sensitively about the reason we were put on this earth, the significance of the Bible and how one pleases God. He answers difficult, contemporary questions like "What about homosexuality?" and "What about other faiths?". In 10 Things, Rev. Thomas weaves a Christian theology for today that people will embrace as a guide to sensible, modern living.

10 Things Your Minister Wants to Tell You.......2007-10-01
The jacket cover says it very well: "Ever ask yourself 'How did this all begin?' or 'why am I here?'.... Buzz Thomas knows there are millions of Americans who aren't getting their questions answered in church." While the book is short (108 pages) the author brings out many facets of a religion that are not being revealed by the clergy. This book makes you think.
Deceptive Title.......2007-09-29
The title of this book is very deceptive. It implies that most pastors don't believe in miracles or justification by faith. It is not an accurate description of what most pastors believe (except in some very liberal denominations).
As a pastor I can tell you that I am always under pressure to give in to what society believes. If I try to tell a (heterosexual) couple that is living together outside of marriage that this is not consistent with what the Bible teaches, I am the one who gets attacked by my members. I could make more money by adopting the liberal stance that Rev. Thomas promotes but it would not be consistent with my conscience. Many pastors do give in to liberal ideas like evolution because it helps them appear cosmopolitan and educated.
By the way, even if Rev. Thomas is not "reverent", he is entitled to the title reverend if he has a divinity degree. Reverend is a title like "esquire" for a lawyer. It is not intended to imply anything about his character.
Exceptional Book for Searchers and Believers (But Not Radicals).......2007-08-24
A wonderful book bringing the faith to those who use their minds as well as their hearts to search for truth, for God and for meaning among the maddness of organized religion.
Not for the "I have it all figured out, it's in the Bible and that's all there is to it" crowd.
Helps readers find a Christian faith that is revealed in all its fullness, wholeness and richness, not a faith of condemnation, retribution, judgement and down right meanness.
A book of grace, hope and mercy....and good clear thought.
Don't be afraid to read it...rush to read it...but don't bother giving it to your more fundamental, Evangelical friends...it's definitely not their "cup of tea."
Because "They" Need the Job.......2007-08-03
Loved the Book...The title needs work! Reverend Thomas is supportive of women clergy, but overlooks them in the title of his book! It won't keep me from sharing it with others, but I would love to see you sell enough copies to correct the title with a slash through "he" and the word "they" penciled in. I think it would be a much more effective and supportive title for your cause!
The title sells the book but............2007-07-19
The title sells the book but it would be more honestly titled "10 Things a Liberal 'Reverend' Believes":
1. Evolution is a scientific fact and religion should stay out of talking about Creation. Religion is about things that cannot be proved and must be accepted on faith.
2. Prayer works because it changes us not because it changes things.
3. The Bible should not be read literally because the Bible writers sometimes got it wrong. In many cases it was written by people who believed in religious myths and allegories to make simple points. We are more educated now.
4. The miracles in the Bible are not to be taken literally as they are naturally explained phenomena or myths copied from earlier religions.
5. Biblical salvation is differeent depending on the person. A person does not have to be born again to get into heaven. Amereican children should be our priority, just not unborn American children.
6.The Church has put women down and it's time for that to stop.
7. All homosexuals are born that way. Old Testament references to homosexuality are to be discounted because we discount other OT instructions. New Testament references are all about pediophilia not healthy adult homosexuality. Jesus never talked about homosexuality.
8. Jesus knows who needs to be converted to Christianity and who will get to heaven utilizing a different path. He didn't claim to be the only way to heaven. The Apostle Paul agreed with this. It was later Christians who narrowed it down.
9. There is no hell.
10. Jesus was mistaken and fallible. He didn't know everything. The amillennial view of the end times is the accurate one.
And a few extras:
Baptist ministers are to be compared with Islamic terrorists.
Jesus was only about mercy not judgment
Anyone not agreeing with Buzz is hijacking traditional Christianity.
It's OK to call yourself a "Reverend"

Customer Reviews:
Great Information for arthritis sufferers.......2007-09-02
This author has figured out what causes many cases of arthritis. I have osteoarthritis and have been following her recommendations for about a month now. I can already tell a difference in the way I feel. If I cheat, I can really tell the difference the next day. I recommend this book.
Using The Book.......2007-03-26
Book was very organized and as a result was clear. The format of explanation and then giving a plan of action was excellent. The only thing it needed to be a 5 Star was a little more humor.
Great Book!.......2007-03-26
A different theory at what causes arthritis, written by someone who generally cured herself. Talks a lot about food sensitivities that cause arthritis and how to figure out what your food sensitivity so you can avoid or reduce your expose thus feel better.
The Type of Arthritis the Author Has Should Be Revealed!.......2007-03-13
I think this is a good book, but unfortunately, the author's type of arthritis (allergic) is not related to rheumatoid arthritis, which is what my husband has. So, basically, I wasted my money on a book we cannot use.
a miracle.......2007-01-20
This book and the ideas expressed in it are nothing short of a miracle. I started having my first hints of RA 11 months ago. It took 3 months of rapidly developing pain in most of my joints until I was finally diagnosed. After the devastating news & realization that the heavy drugs I was on were not having much if any effect I started seeking out alternatives on the internet. That is when I ran across the food/arthritis connection & this book - Conquering Arthritis. It has been nothing short of a miracle. After the week detox I could already bend my fingers which was something I thought I would not do again, I was already convinced. The process of healing is a very long & stressful task. Identifying all my problem foods took 4 - 5 months & it seemed like I would never be able to eat a normal meal. It has been well worth it as now I have no pain from RA. This takes complete dedication & I was amazed at how much strength I had as I went though so many struggles emotionally & physically to be pain free. My motivation was thinking about a miserable future where I couldn't walk & enjoy the outdoors which made the alternative, the temporary struggles of the diet, seem like nothing. I can now make relatively normal meals again with just a few substitutions. I know that at this point I am not completely healed but I am well on my way. It has been a year since my first pains. I have come so far & feel so blessed everytime I go out to take a jog or hike. Barbara Allan has been such a blessing and an inspiration. I am so thankful for this book. I encourage anyone with any kind of arthritis to buy it. It is life changing!
Book Description
Every moment of your life is like a page in a Where’s Waldo book. God is there, the Scriptures tell us—on every one of them. But the ease with which he may be found varies from one page to the next. God is closer than you think!
Download Description
Two works of art help John Ortberg think about the presence of God. One is Michelangelo Buonarroti's brilliant painting of God and Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. God is close. His hand comes within a hair's breath of the hand of the man. It seems to say that God is closer than we think-he's here, now, today, accessible to all who will but "lift a finger." The second work of art is Martin Hanford's cartoon character Waldo. He is on every page of the Where's Waldo? books, but he can be difficult to find. In the same way, even though God is present on every page of our lives, he's often not easy to spot. In God Is Closer Than You Think, John Ortberg examines this frustrating paradox of the Christian life. "When it is so easy to 'see' God all around me (in trees, in birds, in nature) why is it so hard to feel his presence-especially when I need him most?" Ortberg helps readers discover the secret to living daily in the reality of God's most frequent promise in Scripture, "I will be with you."
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding!.......2007-07-27
Ortberg is a master. Next to his book, If You Want To Walk On Water, You've Got To Get Out of the Boat, this was as good as it gets for relating to God in our limited human minds. Ortberg has tremendous way of taking ordinary stories, humor and life experiences and making them clear pictures of what Scripture communicates. Excellent, excellent book.
Where's Waldo?.......2006-11-10
I purchased this book for a small group setting and it fit the bill perfectly. Ortberg has a way of uncovering truth and in this book, encourages you to find Waldo, a God who wants to be part of your everyday life. I enjoyed it personally, was challenged by it and found the group setting enhanced my learning. I do look for God differently now since I've read the book. He is closer than we think.
I would have kept the orginial jacket cover. It focuses you to the subject matter much better.
Not bad.......2006-09-23
This book is a pretty decent book if you are interested in a mostly narrative style of discussion on Christian Living. Entertaining, well written, and clear, I would recommend it if you are looking for this type of book.
Don't try so hard!.......2006-07-19
This is a very helpful little book on how to find God in your everyday life. The discussion of Martha & Mary is particularly astute. My only complaint about the book is that Ortberg tries way too hard to be funny and even hip. (This is the first book of his that I've read, so I don't know if he does this all the time or not; I suspect he does.) Humor should be natural, not forced, as it is in this book. His attempts to be hip are merely pathetic. For instance, he quotes the line "The jerk store called & they've run out of you" attributing it to a friend of his. He obviously has no clue it comes from a Seinfeld episode! Still & all, a good book, though, for a Christian at any level.
I Am Convinced!.......2006-04-14
Upon a recommendation from my pastor, I picked this book up and I was not disappointed. John Ortberg writes with a Max Lucado approach. Taking everyday things and making us realize that they too have a place in our spritual walk. He challenges us to look for God in everyday occurences. His premise, as indicated by the title, is that God is more active in our everyday walk than we give Him credit for. In turn, he challenges us to do our part in praying that God bring His Kingdom to earth.
Book Description
Why does talk in families so often go in circles, leaving us tied up in knots? In this illuminating book, Deborah Tannen, the linguist and and bestselling author of
You Just Don't Understand and many other books, reveals why talking to family members is so often painful and problematic even when we're all adults. Searching for signs of acceptance and belonging, we find signs of disapproval and rejection. Why do the seeds of family love so often yield a harvest of criticism and judgment? In
I Only Say This Because I Love You, Tannen shows how important it is, in family talk, to learn to separate word meanings, or messages, from heart meanings, or metamessages — unstated but powerful meanings that come from the history of our relationships and the way things are said. Presenting real conversations from people's lives, Tannen reveals what is actually going on in family talk, including how family conversations must balance the longing for connection with the desire for control, as we struggle to be close without giving up our freedom.
This eye-opening book explains why grown women so often feel criticized by their mothers; and why mothers feel they can't open their mouths around their grown daughters; why growing up male or female, or as an older or younger sibling, results in different experiences of family that persist throughout our lives; and much, much more. By helping us to understand and redefine family talk, Tannen provides the tools to improve relationships with family members of every age.
Customer Reviews:
You Need to read this Book!.......2007-09-13
Everyone with a family should read this book. It has excellent examples and you will recognize the conversations and situations because you have heard or participated in very similar communication fiascoes.
Extremely informative.......2006-06-27
I have used the information in this book to enhance my communication and relationship skills with my family and others I work with. I believe the book is worth the time reading!
I only Say This because i Love you.......2006-03-19
This makes a mother stop and isten to herself when she is talking to her adult daughter. Why does the daughter not like to visit her? Well, in this book may be the answer, the way the mother talks to her grown daughter. The book should go both ways in helping the daughter learn how to talk to her mother, who is wanting a close relationship to her grown daughter now. This is a very good book, one that can help people grow in their communications with each other.
Interesting.......2006-03-16
I found this book to be helpful in understanding some of the language that goes on between my family, to know we are not the only ones out there with problems in relating to each other.
really really really really good. really........2003-10-27
I cannot express how much this book has helped me understand what's going on in my family. A lot of arguments in my family center around who said what, how they said it, and why they said it. And Tannen provides almost all of the tools necessary for us to even think about reconciling.
This really is an enlightening book. What it does do, is explain what goes on in a particular aspect of any family - she explains how family arguments and conversations work, why some things are said but other left unsaid, and provides some suggestions and advice for going back and fixing some of those misunderstandings. She provides a really comprehensive overview of whole family setups, organizations, and tons of possible situations.
She doesn't say "here's how to fix your problems - they shall all be solved". She can't - she's not your own psychologist. But there is so much information to work with, that for a majority of families this will definitely provide a really good and solid basis for reconciling, and even allowing family members to start talking to each other civily again.
Tannen has done tons of research, and provides many examples from all types of families throughout the whole book - grandparents, partners, families with children, families without children, cross-culture families, etc.. I do have to completely agree with another reader that the examples Tannen gives could have been plucked straight from my life. I found one line in particular that could actually explain away years of misunderstanding between two whole branches of my family, myself included. It's also a very fast read - I read it through in just a few days, and I'm a slow reader.
If anyone in your family is even remotely having difficulties talking to others in your family, you should buy this book. I can't tell you how much it's helped me already. Had to buy two more copies of the book for other family members to "borrow".

Great Romance Novel but only Good by Kleypas Standards.......2007-03-15
I love Lisa Kleypas' novels and wait with anticipation for each new one. This one wasn't really my favorite. I liked the character of Logan in Somewhere I'll Find You (he's also great in the short story 'I Will' that deals with his brother. That story is in the Wist List collection and is absolutely fantastic.) but in Because You're Mine he just came off as a jerk. I'm not a fan of those stories where the hero treats the heroine really poorly but in the end everything's ok. In the last chapter it does become clear why he treats her that way but I found it odd that there wasn't any indication of those reasons before that moment. It just seemed like he was being nasty to her and he was such a bully. I agree with other reviewers to the extent that their age difference emphasized some of the negative aspects of their relationship. It's one thing if a guy is a jerk to his wife but it's weird when she's so much younger than him. It came off as borderline abusive and though Maddie did make a mistake early on, she tried to make up for it for way too long. I didn't think she stood up for herself enough (or soon enough)to suit me. Who knows, that was just my perception. I like heroines with a little more backbone. Can you imagine Sophia or Lillian taking that jive? That's why I love them! In all, I agree with a lot of other people-- loved loved LOVED the first half, then hated the second half. For a better Logan story, check out 'I Will'.
Because Your're Mine.......2007-03-08
The book was great. It arrived promptly and was in great shape.
Lovely.......2006-05-15
I started reading this book and thought I was going to hate it because Madeline just seemed too sweet and nice. As this book progressed and the characters of Madeline and Logan developed and I got to know them I became completely engrossed in their lives. Logan, an actor and theatre owner, is a self made success who came from an abusive childhood. Maddie is also abused although not physically and is being forced into a loveless marriage with a old pervert because he is of the peerage.
Maddie decides to have an affair with Logan thinking that a high profile scandal will cause her bethrothed to break their engagement. Logan is dead set against a relationship because she is in a class he can never be included in. Somewhere along the way they fall in love.
When Logan finds out that Maddie set out to use him he is devastated and decides he never wants to see her again. Maddie had decided against using Logan to get out of her engagement because she fell in love but he does not believe her. When he finds out she is pregnant, Logan marries her but promises her it won't be a happy marriage.
This book is a good lesson on betrayal, love and forgiveness and anyone with a heart won't be able to resist it.
Good, but far from Kleypas' best.......2006-02-28
This book follows in a similar vein to many of Kleypas' novels, as she does love to focus on the underdog hero, but somehow it lacked the same spark and vitality as some of her others. It lacked a certain sizzle. I didn't find either of the main characters terribly appealing. Maddy's character was too much of a dichotomy without explanation, one moment fierce and defiant, the next meek and submissive. Logan I just couldn't fathom; Kleypas usually invents delightful tortured heroes, but I don't think she gave him enough depth. I also did not care for his change of character partway through the novel, after marrying Maddy. Some of those scenes were too reminscient of conjugal rape in the style of Rhett Butler for me to be entirely comfortable with them. Still, if you're not being very particular, it's still worth a read.
awesome.......2006-02-12
I have to agree with some reviewers here that this wasn't one of Kleypas' best work. However, I still loved this book. What I really loved about it is that it was so different from other books out there. I think it was interesting how both the characters tried to distance themselves away from each other but in their hearts always (well, maybe starting at the 5th chapter or something) loved each other. The reasons for the characters actions were unique. Yeah, they married because of Maddy being pregnant, but all the action and the reasons were not unoriginal like some people claimed. This book was really unique and different from the romance books out there. It was so different that I did not really like it at first after I finished it. But then I had to think about why the hero acted that way and when I truly realized the whole point of the story I found it beautiful. Truly romantic!!!

The Boondocks has taken the syndication world by storm. Introduced in April 1999, the edgy new comic strip produced a stronger launch for Universal Press Syndicate than Calvin and Hobbes and For Better or For Worse. The impressive list of early papers included the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and Dallas Morning News. In fact, the notoriety landed Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder in publications ranging from Time magazine to People magazine which named him one of the "25 Most Intriguing People of '99."The first collection, The Boondocks, gathers together material from the record-setting first year of this sensational new strip. Centered around the experiences of two young African-American boys, Huey and Riley, who move from inner-city Chicago to the suburbs (or the "boondocks" to them), the strip fuses hip-hop sensibilities with Japanese anime-style drawings and a candid discussion of race. Funny yet revealing, the combination of superb art and envelope-pushing content provides one of the most unique strips in syndication today.
Customer Reviews:
Riley, you're not in the papers any more!.......2007-07-22
It was a sad morning when I opened my newspaper and found Boondocks gone. Well, I suppose most people really don't read the newspapers, but I do and I miss the ferocious honesty and sardonic humor of my favorite strip since Odd Bodkins.
This is a fine reprint of the early Boondocks. The wit is subtle enough and the art is fresh enough to be enjoyed again and again in book form. If you missed Boondocks as a daily strip, then you're in the lucky position of catching it now. If it's too gritty for you, as Riley might say, it's your loss, sucka.
THE BOONDOCKS IS A MASTERPIECE!!!.......2007-07-01
AARON IS A TRUE MASTER OF BRINGING ONE OF THE FUNNIEST COMIC STRIPS EVER! THE BOONDOCKS IS SO FUNNY AND SO REALIST THAT YOU CANT HELP BUT TO LAUGH AT THE HONEST AND RAW TRUTH ABOUT OUR SOCIETY. AARON DID A TERRIFIC JOB IN BRINGING RACISM TO THE FOREFRONT AND DID IT A BRUTAL AND FUNNY WAY. THERE ARE SO MANY GREAT MOMENTS IN THE BOONDOCKS...WHAT I TRULY LOVE IS THAT AARON MAKES YOU THINK ABOUT THESE CHARACTERS AND YOU DECIDE WHO IS RIGHT AND WRONG. IS HUEY OVERLY PARANOID ABOUT PEOPLE AND OUR GOVERNMENT? IS REILY TOO INTO GANGSTA RAP AND THUG LIFE? IS CINDY TRYING TOO HARD TO LEARN ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE AND THEIR CULTURE? IS JAZMINE ASHAMED TO BE BLACK BECAUSE OF HER HAIR? IS GRANDPA TOO STRICT ON THOSE KIDS? THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE QUESTIONS THAT AARON SHOWS US IN THIS CRAZY WORLD OF THE BOONDOCKS AND EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE SOME ISSUES BUT WHAT MAKE THESE CHARACTERS SO GREAT IS THE REALISM BECAUSE I CAN RELATE TO ALL THESE CHARACTERS ESPECIALLY CINDY AND HUEY I MET PEOPLE LIKE THEM. THANK YOU AARON FOR BRINGING BOONDOCKS TO LIFE. I TRULY HOPE THAT THERE IS A SECOND SEASON OF THE BOONDOCKS BECAUSE REGINA KING IS BRILLIANT AND FUNNY AS HELL AND THE WRITING ON THAT SHOW IS TRULY A MASTERPIECE. I MEAN IF THEY CAN KEEP SOUTH PARK WHY NOT KEEP THE BOONDOCKS!!!

I guess I am a below average Christian.......2007-05-04
Comments from commenter #2 crack me up. I have heard many folks refer to John Ortberg as "Dallas Willard Lite" or "Dallas for dummies." I have had the opportunity to spend time with both the author and his wife, and I find both his speaking and writing to be very refreshing to my mind, spirit and life. I find John's writing simple and practical. Is it Dallas Willard deep? No. However, it's more like a great message that you hear in a weekend service. One that you can see clearly how applicable it is. Also, for you to get the most out of this book, you need to have a sense of your own brokenness and fallenness. Otherwise, you will find it simple and for average or below average people.........which, if I recall, is the same peeps that Jesus TOTALLY hung out with and loved deeply. In fact, some of their names were Peter, James, John, Andrew, Thomas..............
Excellent Small Group Bible Study.......2007-01-06
Not sure what the other reviewers are talking about. I have been a Christian for years and am finding this study quite interesting. Ortberg is the moderator and is excellent at word pictures that stick with you. The study makes you dig into the Bible which is what you want in a small group. Studying on your own in between group meetings requires quite a bit of scripture look up and reading. There are great discussion questions. This study has definitely strengthened my walk with the Lord. Our entire small group really enjoys the DVD part and is getting alot out of the study. I highly recommend this for small group study.
Nothing but fun reading .......2006-10-06
This book is okay for fun reading. The observations offered by the author are slightly entertaining, and may be even quite insightful to the very easily-impressed and motivated readers. For example, using conductor and resistor as analogy is misrepresenting the physics and meaning of the scientific terms. The counterpart of conductor is insulator. Actually a resistor in an electrical circuit is the part that does all the work - that makes the light bulbs or pickle glow, for instance.
Using surfing as an example of overcoming failure is okay. However sidetracking to muse about sharks and dolphins is juvenile and distracting.

God Is Closer Than You Think.......2005-10-08
I believe I was mislead. I ordered the material. The description described that I would get the DVD, the Participant's guide and the hardcover book for the price of the item. When just the DVD arrived I felt disappointed.
Book Description
A Scandalous Wedding
Pretty Samantha Northrup knew her duty was to marry, but this orphaned vicar's daughter wanted to be swept off her feet by someone whose kisses made her toes curl. She never dreamed her orderly life would be turned upside down when a mysterious stranger came knocking on her door one stormy night. And when they were found in a compromising position, she found herself marrying a man she barely knew . . . but couldn't resist.
A Not So Convenient Marriage
What Samantha doesn't know is that her unknown bridegroom is Yale Carderock, the disinherited son of a duke, banished by his father years before. Now the prodigal has returned—rich, but only somewhat reformed. Yale is bewitched by his bride's innocent fire, and he knows he's powerless to resist her awakening sensuality. But is this outcast from society worthy of her tender love?

A Worthy Romance Read..........2005-12-17
I am a new reader to the author Cathy Maxwell. I selected her book " Because of You" as it appears to be in the middle of her writing years. She seems to get strong reviewer feedback as well. I was looking for a new author and was glad to have found her. If If you are a heavy reader of romances you should really enjoy this story line.
The way Samantha and Yale meet in the beginning was great - him pounding on the church rectory doors in the middle of a cold night and her having to race across the church grounds to the burial vaults after him in her night clothes. Yikes! You know this one is going to get good. This is a wonderful story of a young poor girl (in terms of money and assets) but, rich in spirit who meets a son who did wrong in the past and hoped to come back the victor to his family. Unfortunately, time was not on Yales side and he returned too late.
It is a story of great regrets, acknowledging past mistakes and having the courage to build a future even if we don't feel we deserve our just rewards in life. Fortunately, Yale recognizes in Samantha that she is all that is wonderful and he is mystified and, drawn to bask in her warmth, generosity and goodness. Samantha in turn nurtures his injured heart, pride and soul and they find a way to make a life together.
There are plenty of ups and downs in this book but, it truly focuses on these two characters and what it takes to make a man and woman become true husbands, wives, mothers and fathers and lovers. The passion was about a 7 out of a scale of 10. It was warm and appealing without going over-board.
My favorite part of the book was when Yale looks into the eyes of his son the first time and the things he thinks about...it is heart warming. This book is very complete - plot, characters and focus on love.
I say buy this, add it to your library and don't lend it out. This one is a keeper. I can't wait to read more books by this author and find some more memorable characters she has created. Enjoy!
An emotional historical romance.......2003-05-30
"Because of You" is a heartwarming romance set in Regency England mostly in London and a backwater Northumbrian village called Sproule. Samantha Northrup is an attractive young woman, the daughter of the late vicar living alone in the vicarage. She hasn't got much income and she knows she will have to move out soon. On a stormy night a handsome arrogant stranger knocks on her door with a very strange demand.Soon after this incident the stranger falls ill and the superstitious villagers leave him in Samantha's care. When the stranger conquers his illness the villagers find them in a compromising situation and they are forced to get married. The stranger wants to do the right thing by Samantha and he marries her. After the passionate wedding night Samantha is a different woman and in her innocence she thinks she has fallen in love. The problems arise when circumstances and fate interfere. Samantha finds out that her husband is Lord Yale Carderock the disinherited second son of the Duke of Ayleborough who everybody thought dead.Yale is the prodigal son who returned from his adventures in the world to prove his father his worth., He is a different reformed man but still hiding his past with lots of guilt and regrets. He is strongly attracted to Samantha but he has no need for love and a wife.Fate and family take them to London and a whole new world opens up in front of Samantha. After the village people's hypocrisy and betrayal together with Yale's deception she finds it hard to believe in love and togetherness again. Yale is a matured man and he is forced to change his attitude towards his family, his origins and especially Samantha. The author has a wonderful warm touch on the reader by her handling of family relationships and the meaning of belonging and togetherness.I like the way she described the inhabitants of the village. Her descriptions of the people are very accurate, human and realistic.
BECAUSE OF YOU is a warm historical romance pulling on the heartstrings of the reader. It demonstrates how important family and love are for us. I recommend it to readers in need of a bit of emotional uplifting.
Because It's Another Cathy Maxwell Triumph.......2002-06-01
I really loved this book. It was so moving to see these two people fall in love after such a miserable start!
Samantha Northrup was the vicar's daughter and somethng of a healer. She really was put upon by the villagers but it wasn't until they forced her to marry the man she had taken in and healed thru a serious bout of infulenza did she really see them for the hypocrites they really were.
Yale Carderock, the prodigal son, returns to his home to show his father that he wasn't worthless, only too late for his father had died a couple of years earlier.
The most amazing thing was see the growth of Yale in this book. He was honorable - otherwise, no one could have possibly forced him to marry Samantha - nothing had hapened between them, but he recognized the fate that awaited Sam and he was there to save her, even if meant continuing a lie - such as marrying her under a false name. But he was determined to make sure he took care of her for she had saved his life. What follows was his passage from an angry and proudful young man to a caring and loving person. It was a joy to behold, to watch him fall in love.
Cathy Maxwell is surely a genius in touching the human heart and soul. She has touched mine with these so romantic love stories she so effortlessly tells. This was a can't put down kind of book... Definitely one to savour.
Cathy maxwell is always a nice easy read.......2002-04-25
I love cathy maxwell's easy style. You can get caught up and read her books in one day. They are always sweet and very g-rated. Although I usually like more sensual books and love scenes her books can be a breath of fresh air. I thought this book was very sweet. I agree that it wasn't funny though. You and No Other had funny chbaracters, but the villagers in this book were hypocrites and not funny at all.
a little disappointed.......2001-03-03
I was expecting a humorous laugh out loud book like Julia Quinn's books because of the reviews I read. Instead, I felt like "Mrs. Giggles" from Singapore--I didn't find the book too humorous at all. The villagers just made me dislike them and feel like Sam was a weakling for not standing up to them. Additionally, I felt the dialog was very superficial. I did not feel like there was enough character development. This is the first Cathy Maxwell that I've read. I bought a few more just to see if they get any better. If the 2nd one I read is like this one, I think I will give up on Cathy Maxwell books. I understand that the author was trying to write a light hearted book, but it just didn't grab my attention. If you want humorous, *good*, historical romances, try Julia Quinn, Suzanne Enoch, Julie Garwood. These authors are able to combine humor and romance with a better flow.

For All Ages and Cultures ..........2007-01-05
LOVE is an unconditional. This book illustrates the differences between like and LOVE. This is a great book to read to children of all ages. The illustrations are marvelous. Even though the choice of roles may be a little gender biased, the story still depicts and models (for parents or caregivers) the art of teaching love.
Great to make kids feel loved.......2006-03-12
Great book, easy to read and really lets your child know they are very loved and very special.
The Message is for Children of ALL AGES - young and grown alike...........2006-01-22
My favorite line in this elegant volume is when
the regally dressed Mama fox says to her little one,
"I love you any way you feel, no matter what you do."
How many of us wonder, "Will they still love me, even
though I......." fill in your blank?
How many times we PRAY the important people in
our lives will love us unconventionally and how many
times do we deny ourselves the comfort of a
"Yes, ofcourse I will love you any way... no
matter what you do"?
Read this child to the preschooler in your life
AND be sure your teen-aged children (nieces,
nephews, neighbors, passers-by) are listening
as well. Read it often.
Read it to yourself when you are feeling low -
and allow yourself to be embraced by Mama Fox.
It is a less-than-five-minute investment
in contentment, peace and growth in
unconventional love... and hopefully the message
will carry over into the hearts and souls
of the listeners.
I love you because you're you.......2005-08-30
I read this to my niece every time she sleeps over..She goes over to the book shelf and picks it out...along with a few others we read before she goes to sleep...Jessalyn is 3 years old..
Why, Mama?.......2005-01-27
My toddler loves this book. He calls it the "foxes" book. He loves to ask "why" the mama fox loves the baby fox. I think this is a must-have.
Book Description
With gentle, joyful illustrations, this celebration of the potential in each person illuminates the simple ways the world can be a better place — because of you.
Each time a child is born,
the world changes.
Each child brings to the world one more person to love and care for — and one more person who can love and care for others. As children grow and learn, they can teach others and share feelings, ideas, and things. Just as each of us sometimes needs help, we can also find ways to help others. The author and illustrator of MY BOOK OF THANKS reunite to show, through everyday examples, how acts of kindness, understanding, and generosity — no matter how small — can make all the difference in the world.

Great morals........2007-09-24
This book is short and sweet - yet full of good morals and lessons for children. I was encouraged by the reviews and happy with the outcome of this book!
my 2 year old enjoys this book.......2007-01-18
This book is targeted to a very young age and might also be good for early readers because there are only a few words per page. My two year old loves it and the illustrations are beautiful. It isn't a "storybook" that you would sit down and read to a 5 year old.
Someone small...but a piece of it all........2005-08-09
How small and powerless our children must feel sometimes. This book simply and beautifully conveys the message that each person, no matter how small, does indeed matter as an individual and as part of the whole. It also incorporates the concept of inter-relatedness with others, such as:
"Because of you, there is one more person who will grow and learn and one more person who can teach others," and
"Because of you, there is one more person who needs help
and one more person who can help others."
It ends wonderfully: "Even something as big and important as peace begins with something small and precious. It might begin...because of you."
After I read this aloud to my 5-yr old he was full of hugs and cuddles. He seemed to have gotten a genuine feeling of love and self-appreciation from the book.
Simply lovely and utterly important message for our children to receive.
For more on this concept see "Horton Hears a Who" by Dr. Seuss, the poem "Who Am I?" by Felice Holman (from which I borrowed my title).
A treasure for your child's library.......2005-06-08
As an elementary school teacher & mother of two small girls, whose passion is reading, I am always on the lookout for great children's books.
I first found out about this beautiful book when it was highly recommended by a children's book review site.
After reading it, I could not agree more. The watercolor illustrations, done by Nakata, are adorable and children are easily drawn to them. They really complement the text, which is where the real treasure lies.
What a wonderful, enduring message to reach little hearts! It shows how one small person can make a difference while teaching valuable life lessons. For example, Hennessy writes,
"Because of you, there is one more person to share with. And there is one more person who can share feelings and ideas, as well as things....one more person who can help others... When you help, care, share, & listen, you are being kind. When two people help, care, share, and listen to each other, they are friends."
The whole book is a gem, and I recommend it for children of all ages. It is definitely part of our collection.
