Book Description

It is whispered behind the fans of London's dowagers and in the corners of fashionable ballrooms that scandal follows willfully wild Lady Beatrix Lennox wherever she goes.

Three years before, the debutante created a sensation by being found in a distinctly compromising position. Now, the ton has branded her as unmarriageable, her family has called her a vixen, and Beatrix sees no reason not to go after what -- and who -- she wishes.

And she wants Stephen Fairfax-Lacy, the handsome Earl of Spade. Beatrix, with her brazen suggestions and irresistibly sensuous allure, couldn't be more different from the earl's ideal future bride. Yet Beatrix brings out a wildness in the earl he has tried to deny far too long. Still, he's not about to play love's game by Lady Beatrix's rules. She may be used to being on top in affairs of the heart, but that will soon change.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable if you've read the series.......2006-06-20

I really liked this book so I was surprised to see such bad reviews. After going through some of them, I can see now that people who have actually read the series are those who are able to appreciate this story more.

Many of the characters in this book first made their appearance in "Duchess in Love". I think if you read that book first, you'll enjoy this one more.

I admit that I didn't really find Eloisa James all that interesting when I first read one of her books (Taming of the Duke) but now I'm a convert. Her the writing is excellent; characters are very refreshing -- no one too perfect and each with their own idiosyncrasies; the interlacing plots engaging; and the characters' exchanges witty and real. The whole plot reminded me of Shakespeare comedy.

I'm a great fan of series books but unlike others (for instance, Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series, which I LOVE)these don't seem to do well as standalones. Read the series, and you may enjoy them as much as I did.

1 out of 5 stars heroine is trash.......2006-03-21

Wow, I did not like this book. I disliked the characters more than the story itself and in the end, good characters can save a so-so story but not the other way around.

Bea, our heroine, is a tart. That is it - she is. She paints herself up so that only a member of Kiss could appreciate her facial canvas. She is a girl who wears such revealing clothes that her nipples are in view to any and all to see, including our 40 something bachelor, Stephen Fairfax-Lacy. Stephen is a member of Parliament and he is very tired of politics as he feels he is not really getting anything accomplished. So, he wants to enjoy and find a mistress because, for some reason, politics and sex did not mix for him. Crazy idea, isn't it.

He visits the home of Esme Rawlings, the pregnant widow of Miles, who died when Esme's lover appeared in Esme's room and Miles has a heart attack and died. For real. Can not make this stuff up. The lover is the Earl of Bonnington and this whole story about him being the gardener at Esme's estate just to be near her, well, is just silly. Anyhow, getting back to Bea and Stephen, Stephen decides to take as his mistress the ever proper Helene, who is estranged from her husband, a husband who is living with an opera singer. I did not have a problem with Esme and her girlfriends having bad marriages but Bea, the debutante, discarded daughter of a Duke after her trashy behavior, was over the top. She was a ho girl pure and simple and no amount of window dressing can change that. Also, for Stephen to quit Parliament to retire with his tart to the country reflected, I thought, poorly on his character. After all, Parliament needs men who can make a difference and no one said it would be easy.

Bea and Stephen are from different maturity worlds and their romance rang very false. It left an immage of a middle aged movie star marrying a 18 year old playboy bunny. Trashy... A romance between Stephen and Helene would be more appropriate and a better story. After all, it would have taken an act of Parliament to get her divorced from her husband, Earl Godwin. Seeing Stephen stand beside her through that struggle would have been worth a read.

4 out of 5 stars What if Jane Austen had the sense (and sensibility) of Sex and the City's gal pals?.......2005-09-08

Lady Beatrix Lennox is not your average society miss. Caught in the arms of a rake during her first season, Bea found herself ruined and disavowed by her father. Other disgraced debutantes might have gone straight into hiding, but not Bea. Now a dame de compagnie to Arabella, Viscountess Withers -- herself the subject of gossip -- Bea has blossomed into a dazzling sophisticate well-versed in affairs of the heart. Accompanying Arabella to Wiltshire for a house party for her expectant niece, Esme Rawlings, Bea decides to amuse herself by teaching the very proper Helene, the Countess Godwin, how to seduce the very proper Stephen Fairfax-Lacy.

Weary of his duties in Parliament, Stephen Fairfax-Lacy accepts an invitation to attend a house party held at the country home of "Infamous Esme." He figures a house party filled with beautiful and notorious women will provide him with a new mistress to relieve his ennui. Before long, however, Stephen finds himself swimming in a sea of feminine intrigue and caught in a web between three women: engaged to Esme, designated lover to Helene, and utterly smitten with the ineligible Beatrix. What's a gentleman to do?

What if Jane Austen had the sense (and sensibility) of Sex and the City's gal pals? The result just might be something like Eloisa James' A WILD PURSUIT. Witty, amusing and heartwarming, Ms. James scandalous ladies are back and better than ever. While ongoing plots continue to unfold such as Esme's ongoing pregnancy (surely a record in the annals of romance fiction!) and Helene's ongoing feud with her estranged husband, the romance at the heart of A WILD PURSUIT belongs to Bea and Stephen. Bea hides her unhappiness behind skillfully applied maquillage and a seductive manner, but Stephen looks beyond the gloss and finds a soul mate. Their unorthodox path to true love runs the gamut from playful to poignant and will long remain in a reader's memory after the turn of the last page.

While each story in this series can stand alone, it is highly recommended that readers start with DUCHESS IN LOVE and FOOL FOR LOVE in order to be familiar with ongoing plots and recurring characters. And for those already caught up with these extraordinary women and their unforgettable men, your next book should be YOUR WICKED WAYS, Helene's and Rees' story. Don't miss this delightfully wicked and totally original series!

3 out of 5 stars Well...Not Completly Sold On Ms. James...Yet!.......2005-03-31

I admit to coming to Ms. James in a rather round about manner. This is only the second story by her that I've read (the first being in an upcoming anthology and loved the story) and lets just say the jury's still out on a verdict. Will I read her again? Probably, but I think I'll see what reviewers have to say first.

This was a fun story don't get me wrong. One man at a house party filled with...lets's just say rather different women, one being our "heroine" and you have the makings for a fun story. Problem though is there is not just one story within these pages...there are several. Three to be exact. Three stories with three sets of characters that have been building from past books. What this means to me is that this is not a "stand alone read." In other words you should probably pick up the other titles before attempting this one. As a result this reader was spending most of her time trying to piece together things that would have been clear to faithful fans. This was distracting and took away from the fun of the read.

Overall Ms. James has penned a rather unique read that fan's of historical romance can enjoy. She thought a little out side the box and for readers that have issues with this...well, you should keep this in mind. I have no troubles trying to catch up when reading a series out of order (I do it all the time) but this time it bothered me. Perhaps because I truly felt as if I was missing something. Ms. James is not an author that I would write off but she is a author that I will be careful about before jumping right in a buying one of her books.

5 out of 5 stars I completely disagree with the one star review.......2004-09-14

Eloisa James is like a much needed breath of fresh air in the world of historical romance. Her books are just fun. They are designed to be read in order so you do get involved with the characters. I happened to love this book as Esme is my favorite character and I am happy that she and Sebastian are finally together. I don't recommend you just jump in on the third book in the series. Start with Duchess in Love and work your way through to the end. I assure you that it is worth it.

4 out of 5 stars A Storyteller's Engaging Year in Pursuit of Great Pinot Noir.......2007-07-05

I am one of those wine drinkers who has found American Pinot Noirs so thin that I've stopped exploring them. How could the great Burgundy grape descend to such an insipid level in American soil and American hands? This summer, the owner of a fine wineshop in Hatteras, NC, (there is such a thing) tried to educate me that Oregon Pinot Noirs are Burgundian, as he tried to sell me one of his Lange Winery Pinot Noirs. I demurred, so he said, "Let me let you borrow this book. It's a great read." I found the book so, bought it, and one of the aforementioned Lange Pinot Noirs to lay down for a while. Doyle is an engaging writer, a teller of stories (the book is a series of 1-3 page stories), a great describer of people and activities and environments. He is fond of long series of phrases that move poetically. Indeed his first chapter is a single sentence with many commas and one period, running almost two pages--and you don't get lost as you do with a similar Kantian sentence! My only complaint is that Doyle tells you everything about the "farming" of the grapes, and all of the work and sociology and geography and climate and geology that entails, but not much about what is done TO the wine once crushed and how it goes through its various changes in barrel and bottle. I'd have liked more of that. But, nonetheless, it is a fine, enjoyable read, hard to put down; and I recommend it highly. Ask me in a couple of years about the wine! (Though maybe I'll find one in a restaurant somewhere to try before I open my own--or taste one or more when we visit the Lange Winery this fall on a planned West Coast trip. If they're not picking, that is. The book makes clear not to visit then.)

5 out of 5 stars Rich in atmosphere, bright in taste, no regrets in the morning .......2006-09-01

As a friend of the author, having read many of his tomes, most of his essays and all of speeches, I have to say this is the one that tugged at my taste buds. Reading this book is a heady little journey through the Oregon Hills that I love so much. As the story meanders on and the work gets harder you cannot help but want to be a part of the Lange family (or is that just me?) Yes, I know owning a great vineyard is hard damn work, but look at the harvest. Each bottle contains so much potential for great memories, great hopes, great conversations. Makes me wish I could go back in time 20 years and buy a pinot block in the Red Hills myself.

5 out of 5 stars Another great rambling Doyle Story.......2006-08-12

First let me tell you that I am a friend with the author, however, I found this book to be one of his best. Doyle must have inherited the Irish tradition of story telling from his parents. I enjoy his writing style and the ability for him to celebrate the miniscule is wonderful. The undercurrent of Christian spirituality is evident in the stories that he tells. Did he really find the best wine in the world? I would recommend this book as a great late summer read for those that are tired of the usual summer dregs.

4 out of 5 stars Oenophhile's delight.......2006-05-18

For an insider's look of a year in the life of a boutique Oregon winery, this is the book. We follow the Lange family, especially son Jesse, from the end of one harvest to the next. We learn that winemaking is not necessarily the romantic adventure we may think, but rather a labor-intensive farming operation with lots of machines that can break, everyday kinds of problems to be addressed. It isn't sitting back on a veranda sipping your latest creation - though there is some of that, to be sure - but lots of long days of often back-breaking work.

Doyle is a competent and often entertaining writer, with occasional flashes of brilliance. He is informative and insightful, taking the role of aggressive reporter on the scene, being our eyes and ears, asking the kinds of questions that we, ordinary wine drinkers, would ask. I found, however, that his writing can slide into stiltedness, with an occasionally annoying affinity for alliteration. Sometimes, he's too self-consciously, awkwardly humorous. And at other times, he digresses off topic so far that you wonder why he included it in the book. Yet, he is also capable of mocking himself for having done so - which doesn't excuse it. It comes off as self-indulgence.

One insight that I found particularly interesting was the aversion of the winemaker to pass judgment on any of his competitors' pinot noirs. Doyle tries several times to get Jesse Lange to compare his pinot noir to those of his neighbors - in vain. Jesse doesn't rise to the bait because, as he says, he has live here (here being Dundee, Oregon).

On balance, "The Grail" is a worthwhile, entertaining read. It was a gift to me, and I turned around and bought three more copies to give to wine enthusiast friends.

Book Description

Althea Farraday is a thirty-eight-year-old divorced mother of three who's got a teenage son who's a Buddhist, a hypercritical sister who knows how to push all her buttons, a job on the endangered species list, and a love life to match. Just as she's settling in to a comfortable level of chaos, a near-perfect man enters her life. Equipped to steal her heart and help turn her passion for designing gardens into a new career, Patrick Donahugh may be too good to be true. Amid wild roses, California poppies, scarlet flax, sweet rocket, love-in-mist, and, of course, plenty of dirt, Wild Designs is a refreshingly honest and funny read that celebrates the almost-ready-to-bloom aspect of all our lives.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not for the neatnik or perfectionist.......2007-09-12

I really like Katie Fforde. I think her writing style is great, but this book just did not capture me as far as some of the characters. Althea was not the type of character that would endear me to her because I found her very as one reviewer on Amazon has said "frumpy." This is probably because I am a perfectionist somewhat like Althea's sister. I do realize that people are like Althea in real life, and I have good friends that are somewhat like Althea. Althea just never endeared me to her because of her some what no care attitude toward her apperance and her house. I could not understand why Patrick was attracted to her. I thought she had no redeeming qualities to draw her to the reader. She seemed like a good mother and obviously a great gardner, but somehow these two things in my mind could not make up for her being so "frumpy." I could not recommend this book to readers who tend to be neatniks or perfectionist. Althea might make these type of readers want to go and dust her house or perform a maker over. LOL!
Books set in England are a very enjoyable read for me, especially the area Althea lived. So I could definitely recommend this to any Anglophile.
Having said all of this, if you have read this book, and do not find it enjoyable do not give up on Katie Fforde. She has written several books, and I am sure you will find more that you will like.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely book!!!!.......2004-05-16

excellent holiday read, it can be read in a single day! I've read it three times so far, it's one of those books that you don't want to end! If you're a woman; read this book!

2 out of 5 stars Happy ending but tedious and too tidy.......2002-07-15

It started off interesting enough - but it seemed a bit unrealistic: Althena pushing off an attractive and honest suitor for the upteenth time, Althena being such a matron/martyr that she comes off frumpy but has extremely attractive men pursue her, Althena's kids that seem so good-natured about everything, and finally Althena getting the guy (as you know she would from the beginning) and it all being much too pat and perfect. I lost patience with it mid-way, and then I realized that I would have preferred a re-read of Pride and Prejudice instead.

5 out of 5 stars WILD DESIGNS.......2001-12-15

INSPIRING. I LOOKED FORWARD TO DRIVING IN MY CAR SO THAT I COULD LISTEN TO THIS AWESOME STORY. IT MADE ME SAD AND HAPPY AT THE SAME TIME. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE THAT IS ABLE TO SPEND SOME TIME LISTENING TO THEIR AUDIOBOOKS BECAUSE YOU WON'T WANT TO STOP LISTENING.

4 out of 5 stars Quick and Delightful to Read.......2001-08-30

I finished this book in a day. It was entertaining and amusing, not requiring a lot of deep thought. I thought Fforde did a fairly good job of character development even if the plot was a tad predictable
I liked the way the family was presented with all of its faults: the disagreements, the messiness, the lack of planned meals. This was very realistic. I also liked the way Althea met her financial problems head-on and made the best of things.
The only false note was the way Althea treated Patrick....there were too many times when she decided to let him go and pushed him out of her life.
But overall, this was an enjoyable way to spend a day of reading.

Even though ýHandguns Do It Allý is on the back cover of Mark Hamptonýs new book, "Handgun Hunting", it is testament to his accomplishments. Mark has drawn from a wealth of first hand experience to produce the most comprehensive book on handgun hunting to date. Hamptonýs book is not a reloading manual, instead it is an invaluable resource for beginners, answering many questions on hunting tactics, choice of bullet, caliber, and firearm. Experienced handgunners interested in taking on new challenges will find Mark provides insights into hunting that only someone who has been there ý done that can provide as he takes the reader on hunts from Africa to Alaska and everywhere in between. There are numerous quality photographs in the book but a few close ups of some of the more unusual cartridges would have been nice for beginners making comparisons. Having hunted for over 20 years with a handgun myself I can tell you this is the real deal...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide of over 100 common edible plants.......2006-10-10

I've used more comprehensive guides than this, but I've never seen so much valuable information together in just 66 pages. In my own experience foraging, I've used several other much larger guides, but I had to use several sources to find all the commonly found edible plants that I've seen hiking through Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. While other guides devote most of their pages to plants rarely seen, this little book is almost completely filled with edible plants you are likely to see on a short hike. It also gives recommended uses, preparations, and warnings. There is also a small section on commonly found poisonous plants. I have not seen the accompanying video. While I'd recommend reading more verbose guides as well, I've seen no other book that gives so much valuable information in so small of a space.

5 out of 5 stars Author's Unabashed Review.......1999-12-11

This second edition has color photos. There are detailed recipes and identification tips. We cover Native American medicine, Chinese medicinal uses and modern pharmaceutical uses. The book is called the basic essentials because there are many edible wild plants out there that are not fit to eat! In this book I focused on plants worthy of your cooking efforts.

The book, unlike others, is organized by how you stumble across wild plants: geographic context. Or, more simply, they are organized in the environment that they are found. Thus, plants in wet areas are treated separately from meadow plants. And plants of the forest have their unique section separate from the seashore and mountianous plants. Yes, we have added plants from the seashore and tidal zones as well as my favorites from mountainous areas...We didn't leave the sunbirds out either. There are several desert edible included.

There is a important section on poisonous plants and poisonous look alikes.

There are more recipes, better recipes and lists of my top ten favorite wild plants and my top ten favorite edible flowers.

With color photos and attention to plants that are quality food (vitamin, mineral and phytochemical content) this new field guide is a great value for under ten dollars.

3 out of 5 stars Have to disagree on the 5 star ratings.......2004-12-30

As a runner of 15+ marathons, a couple ultras and being an avid trail runner, I really wanted to love this book. Annerino is a compelling character, with great courage and anyone who has regularly run long distance on trail can see, a man who must have incredible commitment. The book however comes up short of where it could have. After the first couple of run descriptions, the rest merely become a repeat of lack of water, tough conditions, danger, exhaustion and route finding problems. Annerino frequently references that his motivation in running these routes is to gain information on how preceding Indian generations would have used them for trade, however with the exception of a small amount of info, that aspect is largely not covered in the book. It is a shame, as dedicating more print space to that objective would greatly enlivened the book. Overall, a good read and still recommended, but I can't go 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A runner's touchstone.......2002-08-29

I first read "Running Wild" several years ago while recovering from a running injury and it not only gave me the confidence to come back from the injury but also became my running companion. I have since re-read it many times especially before an important race or when the reasons for training get blurry. For a runner it is a spiritual connection to the joy and mystery that running can be as well as historic proof of the origins of American running. John Annerino is an incredible man whose courage and love of the wilderness together with his deep spiritual committment to the land, it's history and it's people make "Running Wild" a masterpiece.

If environmentalists ever get around to building a hall of fame, Dave Hall ought to be up for early induction. Hall, the hero of Game Wars, is the Dirty Harry of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service whose goal in life is to stop poachers dead in their tracks and who doesn't mind blowing away a few bad guys to do it. (Mind you, we're not talking about the backwoods denizen who bags a deer off-season now and again, but an organized underground economy that may soon drive the alligator extinct for its skin, the walrus extinct for its ivory.) Marc Reisner's account of Hall's dangerous exploits is as thrilling, and infinitely more satisfying on those rare occasions when the hero wins, than any movie chase scene.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2000-08-09

Having read Reisner's Cadillac Desert, I couldn't wait to read this. This book is different - and probably more readable to more people. There's more of a defined storyline, and has a more limited number of engaging characters. He follows 3 attempts to protect wildlife from poachers. The style is reminiscent of John McPhee (which I mean as a BIG compliment). If you can find this book, get it!

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe it's out of print!.......2000-01-12

Simply the best wildlife conservation book around. Follow game warden Dave Hall as he works undercover among good ol' boys in Lousiana, Hell's Angels in Alaska and the mafia in New York City in an amazing, accessible (if you can find it) true story that'll be bound to raise your blood pressure over what poaching has done to our wildlife.

5 out of 5 stars A wake-up call for all who appreciate American wildlife........1998-11-21

Reisner is an exhaustive researcher, who then parlays massive factual data into readable, entertaining (sometimes disturbing) prose. I found Game Wars to be more reader-friendly than Cadillac Desert in that the book moved faster and showed me a very human side of wildlife law enforcement. Through Reisner, I was taken along on numerous exciting U.S. Fish & Wildlife missions, including several life-and-death encounters between federal agents and big-time commercial poachers. As usual, Reisner imparts a sense of what the law is, how it works, and where it needs shoring-up. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in animals, law enforcement, or conservation.

    Book Description

Adventurer Ken Madsen makes the case for preserving northern wilderness through heart-stopping stories and dramatic colour photos of wild rivers of the Yukon, British Columbia and Alaska. The book profiles three watersheds (Alsek-Tatshenshini, Peel and Stikine) where it is still possible to protect the natural ecosystems needed by wildlife whose range in North America is shrinking rapidly. A portion of the royalties from Wild Rivers, Wild Lands will go to the Yukon Wildlands Project.

      Book Description

Fair warning to all of Virginia's couch potatoes: Curtis Badger has compiled such an engaging and refreshingly unconventional treasury of outdoor adventures that you may be compelled to give up your seat. He will send you in pursuit of rare salamanders on the slopes of Mount Rogers, to dig clams on tidal flats along the coast, and to spot eagles along the bluffs of the Potomac River.

Dividing Virginia into four regions--the Eastern Shore; the Tidewater, Middle Peninsula, and Northern Neck; Central Virginia and the Highlands; and Southwest Virginia--Badger hikes, bikes, canoes, and kayaks his way through some of the Commonwealth's best-known, and least-known, natural areas. He fishes for trout in the James River, confronts bears on Stony Man Mountain, and looks for migrating birds in the Blue Ridge. He kayaks on the Pamunkey, bikes on former railroad beds, and searches for gold at Lake Anna. Yet as much as Badger provides an invaluable guidebook for the active outdoor explorer, his is also a writer's journal of entertaining essays sure to please the most adventurous reader.

Whether used as a family guidebook for easy weekend jaunts or a natural history resource for students of the Old Dominion, Virginia's Wild Side will motivate even the armchair traveler to experience fifty very special Virginia places.
