This is a very good book to have for an engineer who deal with two-phase flows and heat transfer, for those who design and operate nuclear reactors, thermal power plants and other thermal management systems. It provides a foundation, with an extensive collection of empirical formulae which could be useful if properly applied. What feels missing in this book, - and is general feature of BOOKS on two-phase flows and boiling - is the heavy empiricism, the lack of a scientific concept, the absence of robust theoretical treatment that one should possess after reading such a comprehensive compilation. That is to say, it is good for some one who knows the subject/field, not for teaching someone about boiling heat transfer and two-phase flows.

I am so blessed to have read this book, and so will you be! I am the author prayer books myself, and have spent countless hours in the Word, studying-practicing & living prayer...and every time I pick up one of her books, I am still blessed with new insight and inspiration for prayer!
In this book Stormie goes into great explanation about the basics of prayer, what it IS and IS NOT...and why God desires us to pray, privately and corporately. She also gives a lot of personal and Scriptural proof of God's call and blessing upon PRAYER IN AGREEMENT!
This book is very informational about prayer, especially in forming groups and gives alot of examples from her prayer groups and her church! I felt as if I had attended a service or two with Pastor Jack teaching after I finished this book. THEY ARE LIVING PROOF, as IS THEIR CHURCH OF THE POWER OF PRAYER!

Not What I Expected ... But Still Great.......2004-04-28

After her books Power of a Praying Wife and Power of a Praying Husband, I expected this to be more along the lines of a Praying Couples book. Instead, Stormie went with a look at prayer groups and congregational prayer. This is not a bad thing, in fact I found it an excellent book, but if, like me, you're looking for a book to draw yourself closer to your spouse in prayer, be forewarned that this is not that book. Buy it anyway.

This book spends more time dealing with the subjects of "what prayer is" and "why you should pray" than her other books. It also goes into how to pray and different kinds of prayers (confession, intercession, etc.). If you're a new Christian or haven't had much of a prayer life, this is an excellent book to get you started.

The entire book is great, but my favorite section is where Jack Hayford describes people who pray as lightning rods, acting as the conduit through which God exerts his power on Earth (pp. 91-92). There are a lot of powerful word pictures like that throughout the book; that's just the one that hit home with me.

The only thing I didn't like about the book is that Jack Hayford's comments on prayer are all related in the past tense. Granted, some of them are included as part of actual past events, conversations or sermons, and there it's totally appropriate. Elsewhere, though, the verb tense should have been modified to make them feel more current. It's not a big thing, but it does make his comments feel dated.

As I said before, if you don't know much about prayer or you don't spend much time praying this is an ideal book for you. If you do have a prayer life, but it's grown stale or could use a good goosing, this book is for you, too. I still think "The Power of Praying Spouses" would make a good book, but I'm glad Stormie has written this book as well.

Exelente reference book........2007-10-01

I always was thinking in buy or not this book becasue of some other customer opinions, so i took the risk and bought it.
Great book, a lot of information regrading tips for inductor, transformer, softstart, step-down and flyback, it has many pages about everything abouth SMPS and Linear Supply.
If you want a book for reference on SMPS, buy this one, it has many examples, calculations, etc, and is a pleasure read this book.
You will receive what you pay.

I bought this book as a complement to Abraham I. Pressman's Switching Power Supply Design.

These two books are very similar, but do not overlap all that much. I am glad to have them both.

This book can be used as a textbook or as a reference. It is so well organised you can find what you need very fast through the table of contents. Concepts are supported by schematics and graphs.

I am using this book to learn analog design and to learn to build my own switching power supplies.

A good book for its purpose.......2006-06-02

I recently purchased both this book, and Switching Power Supply Design by Abraham I. Pressman. I had cursory knowledge of SMPS from datasheets and appnotes from National Semiconductors and IRF.

Overall, i like the other book better. The chapter layouts speak to the intended purpose of the books. In this book, the progression is from the start of an off-line power supply to then end. instead of starting with what the switching power supply is, and such, this book starts with input circuitry and startup methods. some suitable off-line topolgies are detailed. It is only later in the book that the basic switching power supplies, like the buck converter are detailed. It makes sense -- these supplies are billed for regulation in the book.

I found some of this book annoying. for instance, the author often refers to bifilar windings. there is no glossary entry for this. the index refers to multiple pages where "bifilar" is mentioned, but it is never defined. Similarly, "flyback" is not defined.

if you want to learn power supplies, i reccomend the book by Abraham I. Pressman over this one.

What an adventure!.......2002-12-12

I did the right thing - I ordered this AND the venerable Abrahamson book.

Up until that time I had only discerned the subject in hints and veiled inter departmental discussions - and it was the start of a wonderful two months period in which so much was revealed - I have rarely enjoyed a book so much! Now look, I don't work for Mr Amazon.com, but I would urge you to get both. This book (the one by Keith Billings) has lots of detail which the Abrahamson book skips a wee bit. They dovetail together beautifully - and the Abrahamson book includes a bit more breadth on the possible topologies. One of my favorite chapters in THIS book is the excellent exposition on biploar and FET drive circuits. Its made very clear - this man is a BORN teacher...

This book even tells you how to select fuses, filter capacitors (the point being that the values you chose last month might well be right, but after this text you will know with far greater confidence, as it were)

I must say that the one thing that both books are a little light on is the subject of CUK convertors, which I will have to get wisdom on from elsewhere I guess. The other thing that NEITHER books mention, which in fact is hard to find, is the design of planar transformers. This is a complex area involving quite a lot of maths, so I've been told. You can find some material in IEEE transactions on power electronics, and similar journals, but you may have to hunt a bit. Philips / Ferroxcube are good for this, too.

The Abrahamson book covers current fed convertors. This includes a section on flyback current fed convertors - in which I think he forgot to elaborate on the case where the input transformer returns to the input, rather than the output, which appears to reduce input ripple and improves the power factor. But this case is handled quite well in the references given at the end of the chapter, so no matter. Its a very exciting chapter - but the Billings book doesn't cover them at all, which is a pity, since there's quite a lot of utility for these very stable topologies, involving quite light voltage and current strain on the switching transistors.

I wish the books could go on even further, but all I can be is grateful...

I must say also that the safety aspect of design is covered well in both books, both European and American.

This book does an excelent job of providing facts and information needed to design switchmode supplies. It gives numerical examples and shows the underlying theories.

No real value, look elsewhere.......2007-07-25

For some books, giving a rating can be hard if your level is different than what a book is focused on. An entry level reader would probably not purchase or rate an advanced book on some topic. In this case whether you are an entry level or advanced level reader, you will be frustrated with how many useless pages are present, the lack of proper indexing, and due to size of some of the documents and dependent upon your hardware is extremely slow to do a simple search. Typical examples are listed below:

Disk 1 has no index file
Disk 2 has an index.idx file. I use Acrobat 7.0 which expects index files of type index.pdx, maybe index.idx is for version 6 of Acrobat

Examples of some larger file sizes from each CD
* disk 1 has "EERE Solar RE.pdf" 372,096 KB - 17,101 pages
* disk 2 has "NREL PUBLICATIONS DATABASE.pdf" 230,689 KB - 5070 pages

The Adobe bookmarks appear to be page titles, in page number order that they appear in the pdf document. That is, the index is not in alphabetical order of the contents that you normally find at the end of a book. While some of the bookmark titles are not very helpful. For example, on disk 2, one document has bookmark ACR919D.tmp is for "Preliminary Energy Analysis of the Pennsylvania Department of Environment Protection's Cambria Office Building Ebensburg". Not all documents have bookmarks.

Other examples include:
On disk 1 page 59 was a "Notice to Users" that this is a Federal computer system and is the property of the US Government etc.

On disk 1 from page 16776 for serveral pages was about W3C and Markup Validation Service, how is this relevant? How about login page for the American Bar Association??

It appears a web robot has downloaded all the web pages and then automatically transformed to pdf pages. This results in many pdf pages may only have the tail end of what was on the web page, but didn't quite fit onto a single pdf page. It also means web pages that have the optional printer friendly page are also included so there is duplication, normal web page and printer friendly of the same page.

Some of the links do correctly link to another page of the document, while others are external links requiring an Internect connection. Not obvious what type of link until you try it.

You should get the idea by now about the quality of these CDs

Solar Energy CD: Incomplete and difficult to use NREL Guide.......2007-03-08

This is nothing but a collection of existing data which is free from DOE, put on a CD with a very unfriendly indexing and access system. Although it includes a large amount of DOE energy info, much of which is dated and of little interest, it requires alot of time from the user to find data which could be of use.

May be of value to those people who don't have computers or internet access.

I don't really think I got married BECAUSE of the book. But after I read the book, I finally could see that it was possible to be married, remain an individual, and still have a deep and meaningful relationship. If you think marriage takes away your independence, read this book--it empowers you.
