Book Description

being a mother is never easy-especially when you're undead.

Eva LeRoy, Broken Heart, Oklahoma's librarian, got "vampified" when everyone else did: during a rogue vampire's feeding frenzy. But books still make her undead heart beat-and, strangely enough, so does Lorcan the Loner, the vampire who killed her...

2 out of 5 stars Not so impressed...........2007-09-19

I read the first one in this series and found it quite funny and a good story line so I was happy to get the second. However, this one fell short in a number of ways. As a previous review mentioned, there is little interaction between the main characters. Enough so I was wondering were and how their romance was supposed to be building or growing. I liked Eva, but her character had a few too many contridictions, and Lorcan didn't develop much at all. There were several places where I felt the "scene" jumped too far. I kept checking back to see if I had missed a couple pages, but I hadn't. Though I understand that Eva might have been confused about what was going on, I don't think the reader should be. Also, the characters from the previous book, Jess and Patrick, didn't really seem the same, especially Jess.

I really like the idea of this series. The first book was reasonably well done, but this one fell flat for me. I hope the next book is better.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-09-04

I have just one thing to say. "HILARIOUS"!!!! Loved the book thought it was just the right amount of funny. Her other books are excellent as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-08-30

I just couldn't put it down, I started it on in the evening and kept thinking, I'll put it down in the next chapter, yeah, right, I finished it at 4:50 a.m Michele's books Rock!!! I wish the next one on the series was already out,..., well, I'll keep waiting

3 out of 5 stars OK read.......2007-08-03

Yep, that's right. I find DTBTYV to be just an ok adventure. I have to admit I haven't finished it yet--I still have fifty pages to go--but so far the story has left me wanting. I am a recent convert to humorous vampire lore and had high hopes for this one. Needless to say, they fell far short. Case in point: I am the type who can sit down and finish a good book in one sitting, yet with DTBTYV instead of getting the rest of the story I found myself doing laundry, detailing my car, and writing this review. So my advice . . . Read at your own risk!

5 out of 5 stars This Series Just Got Better!.......2007-07-29

OK, I'll admit...the first book was ok. Nothing spectacular, but a decent read. The second book in the series, "Don't Talk Back to Your Vampire" vastly improved the series. The character depth increased, causing me, as a reader, to empathize with Eva's situation. There are quite a few "laugh out loud" moments in the book, especially Eva's interactions with her daughter, Tamara, a typical angst-ridden teen chock full o' eyerolls and whatevers (this character reminded me a lot of my own 13 yr old daughter!). All in all, a fast and funny read!

Book Description

In this fresh, literate, and biting critique of current thinking on some of today's most important and controversial topics, leading anthropologists take on some of America's top pundits.
This absorbing collection of essays subjects such popular commentators as Thomas Friedman, Samuel Huntington, Robert Kaplan, and Dinesh D'Souza to cold, hard scrutiny and finds that their writing is often misleadingly simplistic, culturally ill-informed, and politically dangerous. Mixing critical reflection with insights from their own fieldwork, twelve distinguished anthropologists respond by offering fresh perspectives on globalization, ethnic violence, social justice, and the biological roots of behavior. They take on such topics as the collapse of Yugoslavia, the consumer practices of the American poor, American foreign policy in the Balkans, and contemporary debates over race, welfare, and violence against women. In the clear, vigorous prose of the pundits themselves, these contributors reveal the hollowness of what often passes as prevailing wisdom and passionately demonstrate the need for a humanistically complex and democratic understanding of the contemporary world.

2 out of 5 stars Distorts public perception of anthropology........2006-04-14

The editors' presentation of this book as a dismantling of blowhards at the hands of academics is misleading in the sense that it suggests the contributors speak for academia - for the discipline of anthropology - and not a particular political clique - That is, I expected a discussion of what separates the academic from the unacademic when I bought it. Rather, the book unfolds predictably as its dedication would suggest: "To Franz Boas and Margaret Mead." - How much you'll appreciate it will likely coincide with how much you appreciate the political stances of these two. The anthropologists stick to arguments that attempt to appear uplifting and moral while their pundit opponents are always the cruel, imperialistic, genetic determinists who are too negative about human nature. This is not to say that the pundits criticized don't deserve it, or that the contributors' articles are not in some sense coherent, but the book follows a political thrust as opposed to a scientific one. The pundits are sometimes confronted for their non-academic views, as they should be, but at other times are denounced for not having the same political opinions as the essayists who, to me, come off as using the title "anthropologist" as a way to give themselves authority in a piece that itself enters the realm of punditry.

5 out of 5 stars Wrong-headed Pundits make myths and policies!.......2005-02-15

Read the excellent introduction and at least the chapters on the pundits you read, listen to, or who influence policies that are of concern. The writers are anthropologists of the contemporary world who are terrific for the most part (the essay on lineage and family critiquing Huntington's metaphors was less valuable than the first analysis perhaps). These pundits have such broad impact that you may want to read the entire book.

Often I feel that most pundits are wrong, simplistic, or polemicists most of the time. Rarely does notoriety of their books seem justified. But they are promoted, publicized, applauded - usually by those who share similar bias, stand to make money on their work or just want an easy read or entertainment - and some sense that they "know" - without having to think critically. .In an age of well funded think tanks and endowed Chairs, of textbooks and case studies designed more for job training than of education and independent thinking about history or the presumptions hard wired into their training --debate is narrow in scope if there is debate at all. Money and publicity replace questioning authority. People are conditioned to parrot, to believe absurdities uncritically - and sometimes manipulated by their fears. Feeling they "know" better, are superior, and deserve to be so replaces competent critical analysis and questioning presumptions. Assertion replaces careful making the case. Quips and metaphors replace evidence. Where there is evidence it is often used in a sloppy manner comparing falsely unlike cases (Murray's black students generally with whites and Asians from educated families expecting and `pushing' education.)

Even if you entirely disagree with this "take" on public "discourse" you are likely to read (or at least be much effected by second hand versions of) Samuel Huntington; Robert Kaplan; Thomas Friedman (and Bernard Lewis's recent polemics parading as history) regarding foreign matters and/or Dinesh D'Souza; Charles Murray, and Sociobiology's commentators on race, poverty, sexism. Most politicians when trying to sound authoritative and much work from think tanks are but "lite" versions of the same travesty. Generally are all so remote and isolated from what the great majority of people experience that they are totally out of touch.

Everyone who reads or listens to anything more serious than "talk radio" needs to read this book. Everyone! It will enlighten most and organize the thinking of others. If you choose to follow the footnotes (often worthwhile here) there are important lessons about manipulated programs outsiders saw (and continue to see) as ancient rivalries in the Balkans and Rwanda; about policies of governments and the IMF that cause disasters attributed entirely to primitive (and racially inferior) people and their innate inferiority and violent nature. Not traditionalism but new fears and new economic crises explain much. The "olive tree" people and Seattle protestors are concerned about economic and social justice and taking care of their families not just thoughtless reactionaries. It is always the dirty poor rather than the clean elites (who finance, control, and buy the work of pundits after all) who inevitably are the cause of their own misery. Self fulfilling prophecy and self fulfilling policy are both evident from a critical reading rarely even

5 out of 5 stars The Zealous and Courageous Christian.......2004-07-17

I bought this collection of Tozer's sermons because of an editorial in which he wrote "it is not the praying sheep Satan fears, but the presence of the Shepherd." That one statement demonstrated to me that A.W. Tozer had a profound understanding of the enemy of our souls and the One who has vanquished him. I have not been disappointed. This collection of 12 sermons focus on the courage and fighting-fervor of the Christian. Founded in Christ through faith, we are armed with great strength to engage in battle with that great adversary the Devil. Pressing forward into maturity in Christ is the main theme of the book. The chapter titles listed below will better illustrate the contents of the book than anything I could say. Suffice to say that this is one of my favorite of Tozer's works (and is included in my Top 10 favorite books).

From the Preface
"I have never given more time and more pain and more prayer to any other series of sermons in my ministry. Because of their importance, I have literally felt Satan attempting to thwart the purpose of God. I have felt I was in raw contact with hell.... But, I will tell you something--it is a delightful thing when you know that you are close enough to the adversary that you can hear him roar! Too many Christians never get into 'lion country' at all!"

From the Back Cover:
From Chapter 4
"God will speak to us if we read and study and obey the Word of God. But when He does speak, we should speak back to Him in prayer and devotion."

From Chapter 6
"Paul knew something that many Christians still have not learned--that the human heart is idolatrous and will worship anything it can possess... Whatever we refuse to surrender and count as loss we will ultimately worship."

From Chapter 8
"I earnestly believe that God is trying to raise up a company of Christians in our day who are willing to be completely seperated from all prejudices and all carnal desires."

May we be able to say with this great saint of the 20th century, "I talk back to the Devil."

Book Description

A self-described migrant provocateur with a "hyper-Mexican mustache and loungy sideburns," Guillermo Gomez-Pena performs as he lives and travels -- from America through Europe, Asia, and North Africa -- making his border crossings and crosscultural misencounters into art. He reflects in Spanish, English, and Spanglish, seeking out Mexican and Chicano communities, retracing the roots of his heritage, and revisiting the many overlapping cultures to which he belongs: diasporic Latin Americans, people on the margins of society, the hybrids, the renegades.
In Dangerous Border Crossers, he interweaves poems, performance chronicles, essays, radio scripts, and reflections on culture, politics, and identity, from his life on the road. His landmark pieces -- such as his interlude as an "endangered species" inside a Plexiglas box and his disarming confessions -- set the tone: by turns shocking, facetious, erotic, political, and urgent.
Passionate, myth-breaking, emotionally resonant, and electrifying, Dangerous Border Crossers connects a remarkable range of subjects, revealing what goes into the making of performance art, and establishing Gomez-Pena as one of this century's most persuasive voices for a borderless future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unmasking "us and them".......2002-03-19

Performance artist Guillermo Gomez -Pena is an incredible talent who in this, his fifth book, has put together his thoughts and recollections on his art through the nineties. I was intrigued with him after seeing some of his performances on video and wanted to know more about this modern day shamanistic being. The book does not dissapoint , reads fast and is full of the emotions evoked from his performances. His writing style is puntuated with sharp insights into the human psyche. There is poetry, interviews and some experiences that will make you laugh. GGP often wrties in Spanglish, creating colorful language, deep rooted in the barrios from points north and south of the border, easily shifting gears and writng as though he were Harvard educated. GGP shares his views on everything from Zapatismo to skinheads, Roc en Espanol to La Virgen de Guadalupe, cyber communities to barios and everything in between from an insightful Chicano perspective. Although it is not necessary to read the book chapter by chapter, if one does you'll find yourself flying through the experiences and recollections of GGP and partner Roberto Sifuentes and other collaborators. The characters that GGP creates for his art are memorable and often take offs on pop icon culture. In this book you'll meet such notable creations as "Border Brujo," "El Naftaaztec," "El Mexterminator," "Cyber-Vato" and "El Mad Mex"(from the film "Natural Born Matones"), traverse the globe from Helsinki to Vladivostok, Montana to Buenos Aires, Chiapas to Ciudad Juarez, Wales to Tijuana or from Fort Collings to back "home" in San Francisco or Mexico City. Experience the selections from audience confessions as they confront the beings created by GGP, the reactions and fears are amazing truths that only performance art can create. See GGP and partner Roberto Sifuentes amost die from hanging on crosses as they portray themselves as the good and bad thief from the crucification. They stayed on the cross until they were finally brought down when someone realized they could die from their performance. Vicariously experience the shock that they both create and recieve from their performances. GGP lives an existence that is bicultural and international in scope , a Mexican who is a Chicano in the US, he understands the nowhere land he stands firmly on, neither Mexican nor American through some people eyes, he confronts peoples fears making them examine their own prejudices. This is a brilliiat book that captures the essence of GGP and his performance troupe La Pocha Nosta. The book is printed on quality paper, full of magnifent black and white photographs and some very nice precolumbian illustrations. The photographs visually delight as they show the characters created , complete with props that result in stunning dramatic appeal. This book is a cultural tour de force that transcends borders, extending the readers imagination to challenge common perceptions and reevaluate the world of the Chicano as we know it. Highly recommended for those interested in one of the best performance artists of our times.

5 out of 5 stars Performance Artist Peers into the American Psyche..........2001-02-26

Guillermo Gomez-Pena has put together a book that should rock you in your socks if you've got any interest in how performance art can, and is being used shamanically (although "he" doesn't use this term) to manifest the hidden powers of the human unconsciousness, play with them, and perhaps bring balance.

In this collection of essays, interviews, and scripts, Gomez-Pena describes the preparation, processes, goals and results of his work, and muses on the whole shebang. While so much of the art world seems to be content with cerebral stagnation in the hallowed halls of the "academy" - Guillermo is out there on the pavement, living his art for the betterment of everyone. He's not just making himself look good in this work, he's honest enough to talk about his own fears and insecurities, and discuss the idea of artistic responsibility.

He does this all in a way that is down to earth while clearly displaying the depth of his intelligent approach to his work and the issues involved. He's funny and theoretically as sharp as a razor.

If you are at all interested in performance art, or, the American psyche as it relates to race, gender, economics and politics, get the book and enjoy. (I might add that this is a great price particularly considering the quality of the paper it's printed on.)

2 out of 5 stars Perhaps I was in a bad mood?.......2007-09-20

I don't really understand the high marks this book gets. Even some of the 4-star reviews, etc. admit that it has weaknesses. It's difficult for me to use these reviews as an accurate measure of whether I'll like a book because there seems to be no gradation. 4 stars should be a book you will keep and read repeatedly. I would not do so with this book, and am debating whether to try any other Saxon Bennett novels, since this one is referred to as her "best yet" in other reviews.

Other reviews go into the plot, so I don't feel the need to. The characters were colorful. But the entire initial set-up seemed very abrupt, like "look at how crazy and off-kilter I can make these people" without a strong literary tool, like an outsider experiencing it for the first time. Instead we get a lot of exposition from the point of view of someone who sees it all as normal, and it's a bit much to swallow.

If you think of it like a sitcom, I can see why it works. But as a novel it's like a bunch of barely related scenes crammed together, linked only by some common characters, but rarely flowing in the same direction to bring the plot to a strong conclusion. And what exactly is the basis for the radio show? I get that they work in radio, and that apparently people like the product, but I was cringing at the ridiculousness of it all. Characters would suddenly take actions, or say things that seemed to be non sequitirs, or left me wondering if I even knew them. And I cringed in embarrassment more than once for them, when I wasn't rolling my eyes. Are people really like this?

Overall I liked the characters, though, which was a plus. I just wish they'd behaved more often like real people instead of comic caricatures. Perhaps with more internal voice I'd have been able to swallow it more easily. Or a more directed plot that didn't keep meandering away from the reader. I'd perhaps give this 2-1/2 stars, but that isn't an option. It wasn't as bad as some of my other 2 star reviews, just not very good.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read with Interesting Characters.......2006-07-01

This is the story of Hilton, an heiress and computer geek, and Anne, a radio talk host. One is a lesbian and the other straight. Hilton is quirky with strange friends while Anne is pretty much a straight-arrow with a wonderfully quirky sense of humor. As the book progresses, the reader watches as Hilton matures in spite of herself.

Bennett has created some interesting and likable characters, including the secondary characters. Bennett also provides the reader with some laugh-out-loud scenes such as the all-out search for the kidnapped teddy bear. Plus who can forget Shannon, the Great Pyrenese and constant companion to Hilton, who has an extraordinary vocabulary and a fondness for ham bones.

All in all a good read, albeit a little light.

4 out of 5 stars "WKRP" comes out with some queerly quirky fun! .......2006-06-23

Intelligent, witty, and classy -- not to mention beautiful -- Anne Counterman, a successful talk show host in Seattle, is facing her 40th birthday with trepidation. Over a year ago, her husband Gerald left her for a man, an event that still hurts and haunts her. Further and more currently troublesome, Anne has become bored with her radio work. In an effort to improve her show and rekindle her own interest in work, Anne finds a new web wizard to revamp her website. Enter Hilton Withers.

Hilton Withers is also at a turning point. Reared by her grandmother after the death of her mother when she was six, Hilton is "Senator Percy Withers' estranged lesbian ... daughter." (15) For the last few years Hilton has been trying to decide what she'll do with her life. Her grandmother's death has made her heiress to a pickle company fortune and she has fulfilled the estate requirement that she graduate college. Currently Hilton lives in a small garden cottage behind the Victorian house she shared with her grandmother. She moved there because of the perpetual parties hosted by her two roommates and her girlfriend, Nat.

Natalie was Hilton's first love, but it is a rocky, complicated, and increasingly disconnected relationship. In truth it's time they broke up but confronting issues is not Hilton's best skill. However, at the radio station Hilton finds that she enjoys her work, begins to think of herself as more accomplished and "adult" and finds that she cares about her coworkers, one in particular.

Add to this possible romance a group of quirky characters like: Veronica, the control freak show's producer who, it turns out, could give Martha Stewart a run for her homemaker money and is a "fourth-generation lesbian" (143); Lillian, the show's septuagenarian, hard-of-hearing, call-screener; Hilton's lesbian roommates, Jessie the "irresponsible" one who is looking for her future; and Liz the grad student who is dating a woman who carries around a teddy bear named Amelia Bearhart; and Shannon, Hilton's Great Pyrenees dog, who accompanies her everywhere and is remarkably clear at expressing her opinions. (She's been known to pee on people who are upsetting Hilton.)

BACK TALK is an example of what Saxon Bennett does best; She gives readers a fast-paced, funny novel that is delightful to read. She creates the lesbian-centered sit-com that you WISH were on TV, a queer WKRP if you will. Her characterization, especially early in the story, is a little weak and can make differentiating some women confusing. However, the dialogue is quick and witty. The situations range from the outrageous and bawdy -- as when Shannon acquires a large purple silicon pleasure item as a chew toy -- to the touching -- as Amelia Bearhart gets lost (of course), found, and a woman grows as a result. Add a charming romance with some satisfyingly heated exchanges and you too will want to tune in to BACK TALK.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful Cast of Characters... Bennett's Best Yet!.......2006-06-06

This latest book from Saxon Bennett is probably her best yet. The author tends to deliver books with multiple characters, making the stories hard to follow. However, in 'Back Talk' the sheer number of characters is exactly what makes the book work.

Start with Anne Counterman, a seemingly straight, upper class woman whose husband left her for another man. Anne dresses well, lives the good life, and has a successful radio talk show. When she decides to redesign her show's website, she hires heiress and web designer Hilton Withers for the job. One note: Although (as is mentioned on the back cover) Hilton is the estranged daughter of a Senator, this does not impact the story at all.

Hilton lives the life of a college student. One of her roomates is a gay man who likes to imbibe. Her other roommate is a conservative, straight woman who considers the others family. Hilton's (ex)girlfriend openly cheats on her, so Hilton has a one-night fling with their flashy new neighbor. It's not until Hilton gives her girlfriend the boot that she realizes how much she wants Anne. Little does she know that Anne is learning new things about herself as well.

All this, and I haven't even touched on the colorful characters in Anne's life!

Bennett has outdone herself with this one. The story is easy to follow, but is complicated as well. The characters are likable and get into some very interesting situations. It's certainly one of the best new books of lesbian fiction released this year. Read it, you'll be glad you did...

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not genius.......2007-03-29

This is a collecton of his regular columns. They are funny, but not side-splitting. If you want to see what Dave can *really* do, try "Dave Barry's Only Travel Guide you will Ever Need".

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dave Barry.......2007-01-28

Hilarious! Some references are a little dated now, but still tons of laugh-out-loud moments - I loved it! If you're a Dave Barry fan, don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars A very funny weasel book.......2004-05-14

"Weasel is a funny word. You can improve the humor value of almost any situation by injecting a weasel into it."

This book by Dave Weasel... er... Barry is an extremely funny read. It's a collection of his newspaper columns that will have you laughing over and over again, and annoying your family members with your constant quotations.

He covers almost every topic here, from exploding animals to traffic cops to reader suggestions to doctors to drug dealers to television. It's all here.

This may not be his best book, but it's really funny and a must-have for any Dave Barry weasel. Er... fan.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and Funnier.......2002-05-17

Dave Barry really fulfills the position of funniest man in America with this book; he makes every line something to laugh about. When I read this book I had to keep myself from laughing out loud, and scaring those. The book gets funnier and funnier as it goes along, but its not all just booger jokes, its a lot of jokes that make you think and have a meaning behind them. Don't get me wrong there still are plenty of booger jokes that everyone has come to know and love from Mr. Barry. The book covers many interesting topics like; Exploding animals and other assorted things, dogs, and buying cars. I gave Dave 5 stars for his epic novel Dave Barry Talks back, so go buy, rent it, what ever you have to do to get it, just do it.

5 out of 5 stars As my introduction to the author, it is the best!.......2002-01-25

My cousin bought me the audio version of this 7 years ago. I wasn't sure why, but I had heard that Dave Barry was funny. I listened to it on the way back to Sonoma County from San Diego. It was a fantastic 3 hours that took me from Mojave to just north of Fresno.

Mr. Barry has an unusual sense of humor, mixing a sarcastic wit with observation and whacky schemes to get rich and/or better the world. He takes us on a voyage from the usefulness of the word "weasel" to Disneyworld, to buying a boat, to the Nintendo world, and later topping it off with his own airline with Sean Penn as the official spokesperson.

I have to say this, though, I have had others listen to this masterpiece, and while a few liked it as well, others didn't get it and therefore did not like it. You either like Dave Barry or you hate him. As for me, I went about buying many other audiobooks of Dave Barry, as well as actual books. No 4- or 3-star review would pull that much money from me!

    Book Description

“Envisioned as a response to Robert Schenkkan's 1992 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Kentucky Cycle, the book's editors hoped to directly confront what they viewed as the play's unfair characterizations of Appalachians. . . . In that goal, the book succeeds and exceeds. Rather than just a knee-jerk reaction to Schenkkan's play, the book's 21 essays instead tackle a century's worth of stereotypes. . . . An additional benefit is that it also lends its readers a sense of Appalachian pride which all too often seems nonexistent today.”—The Paintsville (KY) Herald

5 out of 5 stars Trying to Debunk the last "PC" Prejudice.......2003-10-24

Having lived in the Northeast and Upper Midwest for most of my adult life, it was with some trepidation that I accepted a position as a doc at a Southern Appalachian hospital. To deal with my cognitive dissonance, I purchased this book and was reassured. Now, after months of working and living in Appalachia, I can only agree: My anecdotal experiences support Backtalk from Appalachia. The region is populated, for the most part, with people with a refreshingly strong sense of home and place, and an appreciation for nature--imagine that! There are professional, blue collar, unemployed, and everything-in-between folks down here. The bell curve of IQs around here is normally distributed: The oft-repeated Deliverance nonsense has no place outside of the book and the film. So, if, like me, you have tired of the big cities with their congestion, pollution, and crime, come on out here for a visit. You might decide to stay.

    Book Description

No one is free from advertising. Whether on television or radio, plastered along streets and highways or on trains and buses, ads for everything from films to hair gels vie for the attention of consumers. Of course, ads have long been a cultural presence, though in our shrinking world of mega-corporations ads have infiltrated every nook and cranny of our lives, turning both public and private spaces into unadulterated selling zones. Designer Ji Lee has come up with a way to reclaim our urban environments. It's called Bubbling. Blank Bubble stickers are put up on ads. Passersby fill them in with their own messages, some as funny as they are profound, and instantly transform the corporate monologue into a true public dialogue.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2006-07-19

I bought this book thinking it would just be fun to have around, but I can't put it down. It is funny, witty and addicting. I find myself walking down the street looking at signs, ads, posters... and I can't help but laugh out loud sometimes because I think about this book. Stop thinking about it and get yourself a copy right now. I wouldn't say that if I didn't think it was super awesome... which it is. I just wish I had thought of it first.

5 out of 5 stars TALK BACK: THE BUBBLE PROJECT.......2006-06-26

The responses are brilliant commentaries on many aspect of our capitalist socity: sex, politics, media, religion and it goes on. The book even comes with free bubble stickers. Great stuff! Highly recommended!

    Book Description

It's rare to discover a candid sports autobiography-even rarer when the author is one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. But in Shaq Talks Back, Shaquille O'Neal for the first time talks frankly about his childhood, his life, his rivalries, and his career, culminating with a dramatic, behind-the-scenes account of the Los Angeles Lakers' drive to the NBA Championship. At 7'1" tall and 330 pounds, Shaq has always faced outsized expectations, even as a child when he towered over other kids.Shaq Talks Back is the story of how potential became reality-how someone expected to be a champion finally learned to become one.Beginning with his memory of crying on the court after the Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers, Shaq takes us back to his younger days in Newark and Jersey City, NJ, then to Georgia and finally to Germany, where he began to harness some of his height and strength. From there, he recounts the remarkable progress of his basketball career, changing from a big but inexperienced teenager to a dominant college and professional player.Shaq talks about:*Playing at Louisiana State University for the unpredictable coach Dale Brown*Signing the biggest rookie contract ever with the Orlando Magic-and going to the NBA Finals for the first time*What happened next: dissention, disappointment, and his decision to leave for Los Angeles*The dysfunctional Lakers who were never able to win the big games*Dealing with egos as he finds the right chemistry with Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson, and new additions to the team*Rivalries with Alonzo Mourning, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, and others*The trouble with free throws....*"Bling-bling" and women: the larger-than-life world of NBA players off the court*Inside the Lakers' comeback from the brink against Portland and the drive to the NBA championshipFunny, insightful, opinionated, and unexpectedly moving, Shaq Talks Back is the true voice of the NBA's best player.AUTHORBIO: Shaquille O'Neal lives in Los Angeles. He is the center for the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers and was chosen as the Most Valuable Player in the NBA for the year 1999-2000.

2 out of 5 stars Nice to read at the beginning, but more and more egoistic as it goes along.......2006-05-20

    18 Jun 2005

As the book progressed, it got more and more egoistic, to the point where it becomes a turn-off towards the end of the book. I am surprised that there was so little mentioned of Hakeem. Shaq's attitude seems to be that since he can score, he does not respect centers who can't score. Whereas he respect Bill Russell. But he does give Kobe his fair share of spotlight. The other book I read was an unabashed hype of Shaq, so this is a big improvement.

    4 out of 5 stars SHAQ SPEAKS.......2005-08-08

THIS IS A BOOK BY SHAQUILLE O'NEAL CENTER FOR THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS. HE TELLS US SOME OF HIS LIFE AND CAREER IN THE NBA. MOST OF THE BOOK CONCERNS WINNING HIS FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE NBA. HE TOUCHES ON HIS TEAMATES, COACHES AND LIFE IN GENERAL IN THE NBA. I LIKED THIS BOOK AND I LIKE SHAQ, EVEN THOUGH HE IS A BIT FULL OF HIMSELF. HE ENJOYS LIFE AND IS VERY HUMAN. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO LAKER AND BASKETBALL FANS.

5 out of 5 stars In his own words--pretty authentic stuff.......2005-02-06

From all of his interviews and press conferences, I know that he wrote this book and there were very few, if any, editors to "re-write" his book like most athlete autobiographies. This one might not have every sentence punctuated correctly, but he does a great job as a whole. Where else can you get something like this--a diary, essentially--from the store.

3 out of 5 stars The Shaq attack now in Miami...he's changed........2004-07-21

I do agree that some sections he repeats himself, and caught myself wondering if I had read that section already. I do like his conversational approach though as it seems like he's just talking right to you. Nowhere does it mention in the 'laws of book etiquette' that you have to be a prolific writer to release a book.

I've read the whole book and thoroughly enjoyed it and how it gave the readers an insight on how Shaq views the NBA, how the underachieving pre-Jackson Lakers REALLY were, and most rewarding, his upbringing and how his parents raised him.

Don't expect the same Shaq in this book than what he portrays now. As he's contradicted himself a bit in light of recent events regarding his trade to Miami. Nevertheless, I do recommend this book as a casual and humorous read.
    - Laker fan for life, thanks Shaq for your dominance

    2 out of 5 stars what a big joke!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-11-11
