Like the Oklahoma dust bowl from which she came, 14-year-old narrator Billie Jo writes in sparse, free-floating verse. In this compelling, immediate journal, Billie Jo reveals the grim domestic realities of living during the years of constant dust storms: That hopes--like the crops--blow away in the night like skittering tumbleweeds. That trucks, tractors, even Billie Jo's beloved piano, can suddenly be buried beneath drifts of dust. Perhaps swallowing all that grit is what gives Billie Jo--our strong, endearing, rough-cut heroine--the stoic courage to face the death of her mother after a hideous accident that also leaves her piano-playing hands in pain and permanently scarred.

Meanwhile, Billie Jo's silent, windblown father is literally decaying with grief and skin cancer before her very eyes. When she decides to flee the lingering ghosts and dust of her homestead and jump a train west, she discovers a simple but profound truth about herself and her plight. There are no tight, sentimental endings here--just a steady ember of hope that brightens Karen Hesse's exquisitely written and mournful tale. Hesse won the 1998 Newbery Award for this elegantly crafted, gut-wrenching novel, and her fans won't want to miss The Music of Dolphins or Letters from Rifka. (Ages 9 and older) --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars Gritty.......2007-10-08

Wow, this powerful book left me thirsty and choking from the grit of the Oklahoma plains. A great coming of age story, Hesse gives us the feminine perspective of what is important - what is worth living for - during a time of extreme poverty and hopelessness. The drought, the dust storms, the grasshoppers, "The Path of Our Sorrow" (p. 83-84) has taken away any hopefulness for a fruitful harvest. But Billie Jo and her family are some of the more fortunate ones. They are able to keep their farm; they have a house and some food, even if they have to "chew" the milk because of the dust. (p. 22) The piano offers some comfort, too, until the accident.
In addition to the Great Depression, Billie Jo has to deal with her own depression, a result of the accidental death of her mother and the disfiguring hurt of her own injuries. Was it Billie Jo's fault? Her Father's? Will she be able to forgive him, or herself?
Billie Jo is bitter. Bitter from the dust, from her father's silence, from her mother's absence. She tries to run away from her hurt, "Out of the Dust" (p. 197-8) but she finds that the hurt follows her, and it is in this realization that she is finally able to forgive her father and herself. She is ready to begin living again.

4 out of 5 stars Jacky shares his thoughts.......2007-08-30

This book has a lot of poems about the main character, Billie Jo's childhood. She has many sad stories that make me feel upset; also she has some happy stories too. Her poems are really good. I can imagine the area that she wrote about and feel the way she feels. Finally she was happy, which makes me really glad. I really love this book. I sympathize with the experience of her mother and brother dying, her friends leaving, and her hand being burned. These poems really describe Billie Jo from her outside to her inside. Her life wasn't happy most of the time, because she couldn't even play piano or forget the pain in her hands and heart. Her stories to the world make me feel very touched; when she is happy I can feel it, when she sad I share that with her. The last part is my favorite because they are finally out of the dust and they have their family back together. She described it perfectly; I can see the picture of the story. While reading the book, I looked up information on the internet and watched a movie (The Grapes Of Wrath) to learn more about the time period and understand more.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Children.......2007-08-07

Though "Out of the Dust" is marketed at a YA selection, it is no more a children's book than "The Grapes of Wrath" or "To Kill a Mockingbird." With a series of perfectly rhythmed prose poems that capture the sensations of the 1930s dust bowl, "Out of the Dust" tells the story of a young girl in Oklahoma who must overcome her own guilt when her mother is killed in a house fire. This is one of the most vivid, painful and, in the end, joyous stories I have ever had the great fortune to find.

5 out of 5 stars Billie_Joe's escape.......2007-06-03

I thought that this book out of 10 was a 10.It was a great book and I just hope that after reading this book review that you will want to read it, too.I hope that everyone will read this book(if they like my book review about it).Well this book was my favorite book that I've read so far and i hope that you will love it, too.

5 out of 5 stars back to the prairie.......2007-06-02

Out Of The Dust (Apple Signature Edition) is the 2-year diary of an adolescent Oklahoma girl, Billie Jo. Each 1-2 page entry is a prose poem that relates the dust-bowl setting to the lives of Billie Jo, her family, and community.

Karen Hesse's free-verse prose is serviceable, reminiscent of Masters' Spoon River Anthology (Signet Classics). It serves simply to control the flow, tempo, and idiom of the narration.

Through most of the book, I feared that the story would seep away into despair and inevitability. Instead, at the end I recognized the toughened and tangled strands of Billie Jo's life rising from the dust in a perfect metaphor of the prairie sod.

For a completely different, but equally wonderful treatment of this metaphor I recommend PrairyErth (A Deep Map): An Epic History of the Tallgrass Prairie Country.

Book Description

Not since Betty Eadie’s Embraced by the Light has a personal account of a Near-Death Experience (NDE) been so utterly different from most others—or nearly as compelling.

In the thirty years since Raymond Moody’s Life After Life appeared, a familiar pattern of NDEs has emerged: suddenly floating over one’s own body, usually in a hospital setting, then a sudden hurtling through a tunnel of light toward a presence of love. Not so in Howard Storm’s case.

Storm, an avowed atheist, was awaiting emergency surgery when he realized that he was at death’s door. Storm found himself out of his own body, looking down on the hospital room scene below. Next, rather than going “toward the light,” he found himself being torturously dragged to excruciating realms of darkness and death, where he was physically assaulted by monstrous beings of evil. His description of his pure terror and torture is unnerving in its utter originality and convincing detail.

Finally, drawn away from death and transported to the realm of heaven, Storm met angelic beings as well as the God of Creation. In this fascinating account, Storm tells of his “life review,” his conversation with God, even answers to age-old questions such as why the Holocaust was allowed to take place. Storm was sent back to his body with a new knowledge of the purpose of life here on earth. This book is his message of hope.

"This is a book you devour from cover to cover, and pass on to others. This is a book you will quote in your daily conversation. Storm was meant to write it and we were meant to read it."

-From the foreward by Anne Rice

As I lay on the ground, my tormentors swarming around me, a voice emerged from my chest. It sounded like my voice, but it wasn’t a thought of mine. I didn’t say it. The voice that sounded like my voice, but wasn’t, said, “Pray to God.” I remember thinking, “Why? What a stupid idea. That doesn’t work. What a cop-out . . .”

That voice said it again, “Pray to God!” It was more definite this time. I wasn’t sure what to do. Praying, for me as a child, had been something I had watched adults doing. It was something fancy and had to be done just so. I tried to remember prayers from my childhood experiences in Sunday school. Prayer was something you memorized. What could I remember from so long ago? Tentatively, I murmured a line, which was a jumble from the Twenty-third Psalm, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the Lord’s Prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and “God Bless America,” and whatever other churchly sounding phrases came to mind.

“Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. For purple mountain majesty, mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. Deliver us from evil. One nation under God. God Bless America.”

To my amazement, the cruel, merciless beings tearing the life out of me were incited to rage by my ragged prayer. It was as if I were throwing boiling oil on them. They screamed at me, “There is no God! Who do you think you’re talking to? Nobody can hear you! Now we are really going to hurt you.” They spoke in the most obscene language, worse than any blasphemy said on earth. But at the same time, they were backing away.

There isn't a person walking the earth who would not benefit from reading this book. I had seen Mr Storm on TV once or twice, back in the 90's, and was quite impressed. I wondered if he'd ever write a book about his experiences. I recently found he had, bought the book, and devoured it. It hit me like a locomotive. Don't hesitate, don't think twice, BUY this book. You will never forget it and you'll come back to it time and again in the future, I promise.

5 out of 5 stars Q: What is the best religion?.......2007-08-28

A: The one that brings you closest to God!

I had first heard of Howard Storm back in 2005 during an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. Immediately I could tell of this man's sincerity from his deeply profound near death experience. This was truly the first NDE that, after listening to, had touched me so much that it caused another spiritual awakening in my life. His account of hearing voices telling him (by name!) to follow them down a corridor of darkness were more frightening than anything Hollywood could ever conjure up. These strange beings appeared, at first, to simply be in a hurry and behaved rudely and indifferent to Howard Storm. They urged him to move forward with them to an unknown destination of ever increasing darkness. As he continued on with them he became more aware of their malevolence which frightened him. These strange dark beings sensed his fear and they increased their behavior towards Howard. He finally stopped and said he would go no further. It was at this point that the real torment for Howard Storm began!

Can you imagine the horror he must have felt during all of this? Here was a self proclaimed atheist who was admittedly very selfish and used anger and rage to get what he wanted in his life. Now the sum total of his existence was living in a place of utter darkness being tormented by unknown beings and eaten alive! So much for being an atheist.

It was at this point Howard called out to God, a God he firmly didn't believe existed. As he called out to God these raging tormentors began leaving him alone but not without continuing their curses at him. In fact it enraged them even more. But as Howard kept calling on God finally he was all alone in this place of absolute darkness.

Out of this darkness he percieved a light coming towards him that finally engulfed him and picked him up. This light was the total antithesis of what he had previously experienced. Now he was being loved completely in an unconditional manner.

There's so much more to Howard Storm's experience. If you're even remotely interested in near death experiences then you absolutely MUST read this man's account. I would have given this 6 stars but they only allow 5! That's how much I loved reading this book. His story is one of total transformation.

In this hour of our planet's existence we need to be transformed as well. Read this book and you'll catch a glimpse of the ineffable love that emanates from God.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books ever.......2007-08-14

Howard Storm's book answers many questions in my mind about life, our purpose to live in this world, God, religion, and after life.
Although I am a Christian, I grew up in a Muslim countries and have many very nice Muslim friends that I love very much. I just cannot believe they will all go to hell just because they don't believe in Jesus.
Howard Storm explains clearly what God really wants from us, which is to love one another just the way He loves us. What a simple message, yet very true.
This book is the second most important book for me after the new testament.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing & Preachy.......2007-08-01

I was really looking forward to reading this book and was impressed with the first few chapters. However, Storm quickly got too preachy for my taste, and I actually found it quite repellent. The book started reading like a run-of-the-mill Christian sermon that went on and on. I had expected more. I would recommend Universe of Worlds by Robert Grant. Grant's book and workshop are where I had heard about the Storm book, which sadly turned out to be very disappointing. There is also very little on Hell in this book, though my impression had been that there was a lot more. That part of the book, though small, was interesting and well-written.

5 out of 5 stars very nice.......2007-06-26

Very nice testimony. As howard Strom went from being an atheist, and now is "all about evangelism".

he says some things that don't fit mainstream theology.

1. he says he saw life on other planets.
2. "The one that brings you closer to God" is just a common sense straight foward answer. We know that Jesus is the way, but whether you be religious or not, if you have not the bread of life, you have not life at all.
3. He uses the term "spiritual evolution" Although this makes since to many well scientifically educated people, to the average fundamentalist it wreaks of heresy.

A good testimony to those who can accept it, but very controversial.

Southern hospitality can kill you....

There's no escaping the sweltering heat when White House correspondent Laurel Stewart arrives in Somersett, South Carolina, and discovers that her best friend -- the vice president's protocol advisor -- has disappeared. As frustrated as she is by Detective Joe Gannon's skepticism regarding her suspicions, Laurel finds his smooth-talking southern ways and brazen bedroom eyes disturbingly, dangerously, seductive.

With the homicide rate escalating as fast as the mercury, the last thing Joe needs is a stubborn, argumentative reporter -- particularly not an outsider from Washington, D.C., who triggers a sexual jolt at every encounter -- spinning her crazy conspiracy theories. But while he may not entirely believe Laurel Stewart, Joe can't stop himself from wanting her. Thrown together by necessity, drawn together by passion, Laurel and Joe follow a twisted trail into the darkest corners of the sultry, moss-draped city to uncover a secret someone is willing to kill to keep.

4 out of 5 stars fine police procedural romance.......2004-10-27

In Camp David, the FBI and Secret Service accuse Washington Post reporter Laurel Stewart of stealing papers from Vice President Aiken. Her paper's Managing Editor Lois Merryman fires Laurel for making up a story involving Aiken that the conscientious journalist cross checked with White House informants and a Department of Energy source. She wonders who wanted her out of the way and why.

Laurel's roommate Chloe Hollister is part of the Veep's contingent heading to his hometown of Somersett, South Carolina for an annual festival. That afternoon Chloe calls from Somersett telling Laurel that she has an idea who set her up. She says she will call later as she cannot speak freely at this time. When Chloe fails to call, a worried Laurel rushes to Somersett to insure her friend is safe, but Chloe is missing. Laurel visits the police; homicide detective Joe Gannon listens to her story since he investigates the death of Sissy Beale, who might be Chloe. Laurel states the corpse is not her roommate. Over the next few days her friend's vanishing and the Sissy case interconnect even as Joe and Laurel fall in love.

The lead couple is a delightful pairing deserving of one another although Joe feels inadequate having let down his nice former wife and their now deceased son. The two suspense subplots interconnect smoothly and not just through a paranormal element when Laurel enters a trance in which she enacts the final minutes of Sissy. Although the villain is so insane that it seems impossible that no one in his circle or the media recognized that, fans will appreciate this police procedural romance due to solid casting and a fine suspense plot.

5 out of 5 stars The End is always messy and never pretty........2007-08-30

The end of any war or battle usually concludes with a whimper and is always messy and never pretty. So does the great American Civil War. As the sound of the guns died away the cleanup began. Mr. Trudeau's concise history of the conclusion of the American Civil War is an excellent synoptical overview of those chaotic times. It is by far the best history of how the Civil War actually ended and what happened after the fighting stopped.
Mr. Trudeau examines what happened after the Generals went home and answers many nagging questions like: What did the Confederate Government do? Where did Jefferson Davis go? What happened to all the soldiers once the guns fell silent? Who was the last soldier killed and what happened to all the major participants? So many questions, and Mr. Trudeau does a good job of answering them all. The history also examines many of the controversies that seemed to plague the War's ending. The Warren-Sheridan flap was noteworthy.
All in all an excellent history of a topic not generally covered. Many think the Civil War concluded with General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, not so. Battles continued and the sound of the guns did not conclude until the battle of Palmito Ranch, May 13, 1865. When the last volley was fired, LTC David Branson of the 62nd U.S.C.T. simply said, "That winds up the war." And so the fighting stopped, but then the hardest part began: reuniting the Union and healing the wounds of a battle scared nation. It would not be easy but nothing difficult ever is. The soldiers had done their glorious duty now the politicians had to do their difficult work. The fighting was over now America must move on: And move on the unified nation did.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in America's Civil War. A good solid windup to the end of that most difficult time. The best overview book on this subject - 5+ stars.

5 out of 5 stars The only book on the subject.......2006-06-30

The Civil War did not end at Appomattox or Bentonville but dragged on for several months. This is the only book that covers those months, the men, battles and the surrender. The author writes well and keeps us interested even though we know that this is all in vain. The battle of Palmito Ranch could be the saddest battle history you will ever read. "When Johnny comes marching home" is an excellent chapter on what happened to the men that fought the war, something we all to often do not have. Including this keep s the war from being an isolated instance but shows it to be part of their lives.

I have all of the author's books but chose this and "Like Men of War" to be signed.

5 out of 5 stars It Aint Over, Till It's Over.......2004-02-10

In School, books, and TV it's ingrained that the Civil War began with the First shot at Fort Sumter, and ended in April of 65 with the surrender of Lee, and the Death of Lincoln. However, at the ending of April and beginning of May the Confederates may have been on the run, but the government was still in function with Davis on the move but still the President - Johnston was still somewhat of a threat, and Kirby Smith still had a hold in Texas. This book wonderfully explains those last months to June, not April of 1865. I recommend this book highly, and another writer states that "The Long Surrender" surpassed this book. Well, in some sense both of these books cover the same time period, but I think both book are excellent. In "Out Of The Storm," the focus is on the remaining holdouts beginning April 1st 1865. In "The Long Surrender" is a fascinating tale of the collapse of the confederate government, and the escape of Davis and his cabinet, even when it seemed all was lost, Davis still had hope of making it to Texas - Both books are different enough and interesting enough that I would recommend both books.

4 out of 5 stars A good historical account.......2000-08-06

"Out of the Storm" is a good account of the last months of the Civil War, that is unfortunately eclisped by Burke Davis's superior "The Long Surrender," which covers much of the same ground, but provides a better historical perspective. Andre Trudeau focusses on the three month period April-June 1865, carrying the narrative of the War from the fall of Richmond to the last skirmish in Texas (a Confederate victory). Along the way, he retells many important stories that seem lost to history, like the Sultana explosion, the deadliest naval disaster in U.S. history than claimed the lives of nearly 1700 people, most of them returning Union POWs. Overall, this is an interesting historical account that should appeal to those with an interest in the Civil War.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent telling of the final months of the Civil War.......2000-04-14

Mr Trudeau's final Civil War book was spelendidly told in neat and organized sections. The events leading up to and after Lee' surrender are detailed and written in a compelling style. The known and unknown characters that peopled the era are unique, interesting and in some cases mysterious. The final battles are well researched and the maps are superbly drawn allowing the reader to follow the course of action. I highly recommend his other fine works, "Bloody Roads South" and "The Citadel" to round out the most critical and bloody years of the conflict.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Life Raft to Write out the Storm.......2005-11-21

I was expecting a lot from this book and was pleasantly surprised to see it meet those expectations.

This book covers many topics that face writers during their writing process/life. It takes you by the hand and walks you through each one as if you have a coach right there with you. It also has 'try this' exercises at the end of each chapter giving you suggestions of how to work through that perticular road block - a very nice bonus to the book.

There were a couple of very minor typos on the first Introduction page, but aside from that it is a very well written and quite useful book and well worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars An elegant solution to writer's block.......1999-08-14

This book is simple, straightforward, and useful. It reflects care and skill of the author, who has synthesized many years of writing and teaching writing into a book that's slim in size but huge in ideas. Not one word is wasted here--every quote, writing sample, and idea has purpose. A lovely effort and better than 95% of writing how-to books on the market.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It does a thorough job.......2005-04-04

I got this book from the library this spring to explain tornadoes to my 4-year-old son. It covered everything it needed to in one small and attractive book. The pages are not too long that he was not able to sit through it, and the illustrations are attractive and provoking. First it explains what a tornado is, where they occur, how they occur, when, and finally what to do if you encounter one. It does touch on the damage that a tornado causes, including speaking briefly about deaths. But I thought it was done in a straightforward manner and did not dwell on the topic or sensationalize it. I definitely think kids from the age of 4 and up could handle all the information in this book.

4 out of 5 stars This book might blow you away..........2000-04-10

...with it's ability to explain this twist of nature at a level young children can understand. I was most impressed with the fact that not only does it describe the scientific aspects of tornado formation in simple terms, it also discusses tornado safety by giving kids several examples of where they might be when a tornado hits and the best place to take cover for each situation. While the publisher lists ages 4-8 as the targeted reading level, I found with our library groups at school that our 9-11 year olds were very interested in it as well. If you have younger children and live in an area where tornadoes are a real threat, I highly recommend using this book to introduce tornado safety.

    Book Description

Fifteen-year-old Emily has never wondered if she's had past lives-she's too busy thinking about the life she's living. Between taking care of her horse Moonie, keeping up with homework, and fending off the school bully who picks on her best friend for being chubby, Emily's got enough on her plate. But after she nearly drowns in the new pool at her middle school, she begins having recurring nightmares that lead her to think that this life may not be her first.

Riding out the Storm is a modern tale that chronicles a young girl's journey into recalling a past-life and how she copes with the outcome. Spiritual and believable, this novel features a charismatic narrator who learns to listen to the signals around her and trust her instincts. Along her journey, Emily finds herself anxious to learn all she can about reincarnation, and she discovers the value of reaching out to not-so-unfamiliar strangers to repair relationships long interrupted.
