5 out of 5 stars Brand new book in a fast amount of time.......2007-09-12

The book was brand new and at a great price. It arrived promptly in perfect packaging.

1 out of 5 stars eBook restricted use disappointing.......2007-08-28

Each copy of the book comes with a eBook download code that allows the book owner to download an electronic copy of the book. The eBook version of the book is a special pdf file that can only be viewed on the computer that downloaded the eBook. The pdf file may be copied to another computer but the file will not be viewable on the other computer due to digital rights management features built into the file. Also, there is a 10 page/day print limit on the file. So if you want to avoid carrying the 3 inch thick book around, you had better download the eBook version to a laptop.

5 out of 5 stars Good read for those in therapeutics.......2007-02-26

Helps make material taught in class solid. Also has nutrtitional information, and OTC drug information in interacting diseases.

5 out of 5 stars Comments.......2007-01-07

One of the most useful and logical texts on pharmacotherapy available. Explaining the disease process then introducing the drugs gives the reader a structure with which to approach the details of drug therapy and allows extension into structurally-similar drugs that may not be covered.

5 out of 5 stars Handy reference.......2006-08-08

I didn't have this book during my P3 (3rd year of PharmD school) year; we used the text by Kradjan that had a patient-based format. DePiro's more traditional format makes it easier to find info quickly. The downloadable format of this text (which comes with the book) makes it even faster to find info. A downside would be books like these are out-of-date as soon as they're published, but I've been using the DePiro just fine for my P4 clerkships and plan to use Kradjan's as a doorstop. (I'm not really a kid)

Book Description

With its balanced approach to reading instruction, Reading and Learning to Read, 5/e, remains a comprehensive, active learning tool that encourages students to teach reading in ways that are both meaningful and reflective. Rather than emphasizing a traditional skills-based approach, this book focuses on teaching skills within a meaning-centered approach. This includes an emphasis on literature-based reading instruction, the integration of technology into the teaching of reading, and the integration of reading and writing instruction. This book continues to promote a contemporary, balanced approach to teaching reading and writing with a renewed emphasis on integrating technology, accommodating the needs of diverse learners, and teaching the middle school young adolescent. Given the increasingly focused interest on literacy standards in the teaching of reading world-wide, this edition also highlights practical examples and references that exemplify the International Reading Associations Standards for Reading Professionals. User friendly marginal icons highlight each of these new features, making them easy to locate for classroom discussion. Additionally, this updated edition features a new section in each chapter that discusses pertinent issues regarding struggling with readers, a recurring concern of classroom teachers. Web sites are also included at the end of each chapter that direct the reader to online practical resources on a variety topics. Designed for anyone interested in elementary reading methods, reading in the elementary school, and developmental reading.

A concise text explaining everything an educator needs to know to develop and expand a literacy program.

4 out of 5 stars refreshing and up to date.......2006-06-29

I found this book very useful. It helped me make the transition from teaching English as L1 to English as a Second Language. The text contains many strategies and activities that have proven effective and can be applied to ESL and is also useful for teachers reviewing for their certification exams.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading Instruction Beginners Book.......2003-10-24

This is one of the most comprehensive and interesting books I had ever come across in my educational career. The authors not only teach the basics of reading instruction, but put forth a plethora of differing strategies/methods for application in the elementary and middle grade classrooms.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for future teachers or parents!.......2000-06-03

This book is written very well and is very informative. I found this book to be a great tool for teachers. I read this book for a class and I felt that it kept my interest and made for easy reading material. This book provides parents and/or teachers with insight on how to help children learn to read. This book also includes many great activities and strategies to use to strengthen and encourage literacy (no matter what age the student is). I have tested many of the activities on students myself, and found that it made teaching and learning to read more enjoyable for everyone involved. Overall, I thought this book was great. I plan on keeping it as a resource in my classroom or even in my own home.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The true value of this book . . . .......2005-08-09

I can only speculate that this book is, as was one of the previous editions I've read, used and loved, is bound to provide an exceptional foundational education in the skill of technical (engineering design) drawing/drafting for those with the natural aptitude for freehand drawing. Readers will indeed learn about and develop precision drawing skills--whether drawing with instruments or computer.

The true value of this book is in its ability to guide and therefore transform the natural artist's raw talent into that of a professional grade design artist--capable of rendering technical depictions, representations, or designs, at any time, with little effort, and without error. As with learning to walk, this of course takes time, patience, and practice.

I have personally witnessed the struggles of many whom, having necessity to complete a course of study based upon this book, were ill-suited by their own admission for the discipline required of the eye, hand, and attention (or mind) as demanded by the capable sketch artist--to say nothing of the trained detail design drafter.

If realizing the instructional value of Technical Drawing, 12th edition, seems to come at great pain and effort, the obvious question clearly becomes one of aptitude for drawing. However, while the aptitude for drawing is extremely beneficial, proficiency in technical drawing can still be achieved by sheer tenacity.

Technical Drawing, 12th edition, as with previous editions, is therefore highly recommended for the tenacious engineer, designer and drafter. It has stood the test of time as a solid component of engineering design instruction in this nation's premiere academic institutions.

1 out of 5 stars Reference book in need of an editor.......2005-01-17

.: edit, June 30 2007 :.

New rating: 3 stars

I wrote the original review in 2005, after several hours of trying to decipher this book and find misplaced information within it so as to complete a class assignment. Discovering that one of its specific textual errors made my specific task impossible, I wrote the following.

If Amazon let me increase my rating, at this point I would, but I maintain that it is unpolished and desperately under-edited.

.: end edit :.

As a freshman engineering major, I have been compelled to use Technical Drawing for a graphics course. This has been a profoundly frustrating experience. It seems that the authors, in their zeal to attain unto the dry, lifeless style characteristic of most professional engineering publications, also unintentionally created a text which is superlatively unclear.

I am recurrently astonished at the utter incomprehensibility of entire paragraphs. I will read a section, cynically assert that it communicates nothing, read it over a dozen more times, show it to others who in turn read it a dozen times, only to have my first conclusion affirmed.

There are extremely blatant contradictions.

Terms are used at the beginning of a chapter and not defined until the end.

It speaks voluminously about how critical it is to follow the prescribed techniques, only to devote less-than-the-bare-minimum amount of space to the actual descriptions of those techniques.

The review questions are frequently unrelated to the content they are supposed to be reinforcing, or are simply placed in the wrong chapter.

This (expensive!) book is a conspicuous example of "writing by committee." Technical Drawing may well be a decent-enough reference book - useful if you need a reminder about material you already know - but expect to get angry at it, especially if you're learning the information for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sources available.......1999-03-23

This book is loaded with technical information for the dratsman and designer. A must have for anyone who is in the mechanical technology field.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best text books ever written..........1997-10-05

This text was the basic drafting manual that I used during my technical education; its use did not end with school, however, since I refer to it frequently in my occupation. It tells everything that needs to be explained and described in the general drawing problems that might be encountered in industrial practice. It contains excellent descriptions and illustrations for: Drawing Threads, Fasteners & Springs Geometric Constructions Clear, Concise instructions in using Drafting Instruments, (before the time of Computer Aided Drafting & Desing, in any case). An Excellent overview of the Industrial Design & Development Process, (which I wish my supervisors would read). Sectional Drawing. This book is to drafting what Machinery's Handbook, of the Industrial Press, is to the metal working industries. There are a variety of Drafting Textbooks available, but none are incrementally better, let alone drasticaly better.

    Book Description

The Reformation swept across Europe with a God-glorifying gospel of grace. Now the doctrine of grace cherished and proclaimed by the Reformers is under renewed assault from an unexpected place—the evangelical church itself.

With the help of several theologians, Gary L. W. Johnson and Guy P. Waters trace the background and development of two seemingly disparate movements that have surfaced within the contemporary church—the New Perspective(s) on Paul and the Federal Vision—and how they corrupt the truth of salvation by faith alone. By regaining a focus on the doctrine of grace, pastors, seminarians, and future leaders can regain the cohesion, coherence, and direction to truly build the church to withstand the attacks of false and empty doctrines.

“If you have been unsettled or impressed by the arguments of the New Perspectives or the Federal Vision—this book is for you. By Faith Alone is a serious and substantial rejoinder to the new viewpoints on justification, imputation, covenant theology, and more.”
    J. Ligon Duncan III, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi; President, Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals; Adjunct Professor, Reformed Theological Seminary

“The twin pillars of historic Protestantism—the authority of the Bible and justification by faith alone—have been under attack since the beginning of the Reformation. But the recent assault on justification by the New Perspective on Paul and by the Federal Vision is particularly pernicious, cloaked as it is in apparent scholarship and piety. This important book defends the historic Reformation doctrine with better scholarship and more profound piety.”
    W. Robert Godfrey, President and Professor of Church History, Westminster Seminary California

“In the sixteenth century, Martin Luther boldly declared that the doctrine of justification is the article by which the church stands or falls. In the twenty-first century, many churches have not stood their ground but have fallen prey to the voices of those who have offered new perspectives on an ancient, biblical doctrine. I am thankful the Lord has raised up faithful men to provide the people of God with a clear, biblical perspective on this most precious doctrine.”
Burk Parsons, Editor, Tabletalk magazine; Minister of Congregational Life, Saint Andrew’s Chapel, Sanford, Florida

    4 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking theological essays.......2007-04-11

This is a very thought-provoking series of theological essays engaging the contemporary challenges to the historic Reformed understanding of the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Any book of this sort, with multiple contributors, is bound to be somewhat uneven in quality - but this is one of the better books of this sort that I've seen.

Here is the table of contents, interspersed with my brief comments.

    1. What did Saint Paul Really Say? N. T. Wright and the New Perspective(s) on Paul - Cornelis P. Venema

    2. Observations on N. T. Wright's Biblical Theology with Special Consideration of the "Faithfulness of God" - T. David Gordon

These first two chapters engage the writings of N. T. Wright, who is probably the highest profile proponent of the New Perspective on Paul (and is also one of the most renowned contemporary Jesus scholars). Their critiques of Wright are very, very insightful and should be seriously considered. Everything really does seem to fall on Wright's embrace of a certain way of reading Second Temple Judaism (as non-legalistic) and his interpretation of the phrase "dikaiosune theou" as "the covenant faithfulness of God" instead of "the righteousness of God." This second question is adequately challanged in the second chapter of this book.

    3. A Justification of Imputed Righteousness - Richard D. Phillips

    4. The Foundational Term for Christian Salvation: Imputation - C. F. Allison

These two chapters address the recent controversies surrounding the doctrine of imputation. Having read Piper's defense of imputation in Counted Righteous in Christ, as well as Carson's essay in the volume on Justification edited by Husbands, I still found these chapters very helpful and persuasive (I've not yet read Brian Vicker's Jesus Blood AND Righteousness, a recent more in-depth treatment of imputation). These essays were very good.

    5. Reflections on Auburn Theology - T. David Gordon

This was a little less interesting to me, probably b/c I'm not Presbyterian.

    6. To Obey is Better than Sacrifice: A Defense of the Active Obedience of Christ - David Van Drunen

As I recall, this was also a good essay, defending the necessity and imputation of the active obedience of Christ to believers

    7. Covenant, Inheritance, and Typology: Understanding the Principles at Work in God's Covenants - R. F. White & E. C. Beisner

Of all the essays in this book, this one stands out as the most helpful and the one that will repay several re-readings in the future. The authors set out to show why the theological construct of covenant theology (as traditionally understood in Reformed theology) is biblically-faithful and warranted from the texts (even though the language is sometimes extra-biblical). Most helpful was their contrasting the two principles of inheritance, by either personal merit or representative merit, and then tracing these two principles through the various historical covenants. This is the best thing on covenant theology that I've read so far (though my reading in this area has not been very wide).

    8. Why the Covenant of Works is a Necessary Doctrine: Revisiting the Objections to a Venerable Reformed Doctrine - John Bolt

As with the chapter 7, this was a very, very helpful treatment of covenant theology, specifically the covenant of works. Bolt is an excellent and lucid writer and I finished the essay wanting to read more of his material.

    9. The Reformation, Today's Evangelicals, and Mormons: What Next? - Gary L. W. Johnson

This essay was good, but seemed a little bit displaced in this volume.

Overall, this is a very good volume and worth reading for those engaged in the current debates over justification. However, if you are only going to read one book on the New Perspective on Paul, get Stephen Westerholm's Perspectives Old and New: The Lutheran Paul and His Critics. It is much more comprehensive and has been the most important book I've read on the issue.

    Book Description

How did we arrive where we are now: American society dominated by corporations and their interests, an economy based on war and the weapons industry, trillions of dollars missing from federal government agencies, the annihilation of our civil liberties and the shredding of the U.S. Constitution, the dumbing-down of America and the reduction of our educational system to the lowest common denominator, Peak Oil-the best-kept secret in America, and the polarization of economic prosperity and quality of life?

U.S. HISTORY UNCENSORED offers a non-traditional account of our history that answers these questions and superbly connects the dots between current events and their ultimate roots. As carefully- documented as it is opinionated, this book provides a perspective that assists the reader in navigating America's precarious present and its faltering future.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Connects the Dots.......2007-03-28

The author covers a lot of ground in a mere 226 pages beginning with Reconstruction in 1865 and ending with a treatment of Peak Oil, Resource Wars, Elections and Dissent. But there are plenty of references, pertinent web links and recommended videos interspersed for further depth should you choose to pursue it. Her writing style is clear, pithy and to the point and the large page format gives visual clarity. The text would be a pleasure to read, if the contents weren't so sobering. In later chapters, she offers solutions to the dilemmas we face which may or may not resonate with the reader. Regardless, it's hard to imagine anyone could read this gripping account without subsequently giving the contents a lot of thought.

US History, Uncensored is highly unflattering to America's past and present, and in dredging up robust historical details, Dr. Baker has whipped history to life. All those little events that previously were mere passing footnotes in my life became linked together in a meaningful way and were dragged kicking and screaming into the light of day. And the picture isn't pretty. Dr. Baker identifies age-old battles and brings them to life as they are continued to be fought right in front of our eyes.

This is not a right versus left, Republican versus Democrat expose. Neither party is left unscathed and she illustrates well why that meme is off the mark. Rather, she has shown us what the real objectives of individuals, corporations, the government and the CIA may be and what is actually being achieved in the name of America. And by highlighting the tactics used, she makes these objectives less likely to be obscurred in the future. Dr. Baker, refreshingly, does not paint Bush as an incompetent. He comes off more as one shrewdly acting to implement the objectives of, perhaps, the Project for a New American Century members. No matter how you see him, it's hard to deny he's getting THAT mission accomplished.

There are a lot of unanswered questions and seemingly insurmountable foes. But giving up and deciding simply to move on in the belief we're being (shudder) patriotic or not wishing to be destructive is to let stacked courts and stacked commissions write our history as well as our future for us. If we cherish our Constitution and Bill of Rights, and the sacrifices that were made in the name of freedom, it's not unreasonable to demand our elected representatives abide by and defend these documents. As Dr. Baker points out, these rights were deemed inalienable - granted by virtue of life, not bestowed by government. When we allow elected representatives to break their oaths, when we allow them to terminate these rights, it is theft. And it bequeathes a more dangerous future for us all.

Critical analysis of our political environment and the people who publish it are endangered. Look no further than what has happened to Gary Webb, Catherine Austin Fitts and Michael Ruppert. I for one, thank them for their patriotism and their courage and I thank Dr. Baker for her effort here. I recommend getting this book while you can. Rather than wait 30 years in the hope the Freedom of Information Act still exists and some of these events survive de-classification, why not find out about them now when it has a chance of doing some good?

Anyone who bought Zinn's People's History and Lies My Teacher Told Me does not need this book which is not as hard punching as the above two

    5 out of 5 stars Real History.......2007-01-10

Although Baker's book is intended as a supplement to a history text book, it really should be read as a stand alone narrative of contemporary U.S. history. The book starts off slow, but quickly gains steam, finishing in a crescendo of well written and cogent arguments for what is really happening to our country. These are the dark secrets of this nation that need to see the light of day, in contrast to the sanitized history we usually hear from texts, politicians, and the media. I highly recommend this book for any American that truely cares about your country.

    Book Description

Four Views on the Book of Revelation are presented, critiqued, and defended: preterist, idealist, and the classical dispensationalist and progressive dispensationalist forms of the futurist approach.

    3 out of 5 stars Kind of a snoor...........2007-07-07

Gentry's presentation convinced me here of partial preterism... this is in part due to Robert Thomas' contribuation that is really not fun. Thomas is overly assertive without warrant and dogmatic without the evidence! Herein lies a convincing essay for Preterism...unfortuantly the rest are not worth reading. The book seems to turn into a showdown between Gentry and Thomas; Pate and Hamstra really do not hold much weight here. Marvin Pate's view is actually quite amusing. Thomas can not handle Gentry theologically although I will concede Thomas the victor of a great number of points. Kenneth Gentry puts Revelation in its original context and it all flows from this standpoint. Winner Kenneth Gentry...

Needed as textbook for class. Good presentation of current approaches to the Book of Revelation.

    4 out of 5 stars Summary.......2007-01-04

This book offers a good summary of the various views of the book of Revelation. It is a very good starting point for detailed research

4 out of 5 stars "Will do more to convince you of what you already believe than change your mind...".......2005-12-31

The author definitely tends toward the futurist view, but he neither he nor I should have to apologize for that. It is the most scriptural view.

The views are presented with thorough research behind them, and presented fairly. Those enjoying this book most will be those who espouse the futurist position, and would like some ammunition against other views.

For a very simple and much less involved commentary on Revelation, may I suggest one written especially for TEENS and NEW BELIEVERS: "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!" (ISBN: 059536668). This is the most practical book I've ever seen on Revelation--a book that few relate to everyday life.

All in all, this book will do more to convince you of what you already believe on the Second Coming rather than change your mind on any of it.

5 out of 5 stars Comparing it with other books on the subject........2005-04-26

Your book was interesting, and it did make me think about the things you have written. However, I suguest you take some time and read another book on this subject. It was written by a Pastor. That book is called A Study Through The Great Book of REVELATION. It was published by Publish America. The ISBN is 1-4137-2154-0. My Sunday school class has been using that book and my Pastor has indicated that it seems to show us where we are in God's time schedule. I believe that those two books combined would have made a greater series than the one being shown by NBC.

        Book Description

In this book, T. L. Short corrects widespread misconceptions of Peirce’s theory of signs and demonstrates its relevance to contemporary analytic philosophy of language, mind, and science. Peirce’s theory of mind, naturalistic but nonreductive, bears on debates of Fodor and Millikan, among others. His theory of inquiry avoids foundationalism and subjectivism, while his account of reference anticipated views of Kripke and Putnam. Peirce’s realism falls between ‘internal’ and ‘metaphysical’ realism and is more satisfactory than either. His pragmatism is not verificationism; rather, it identifies meaning with potential growth of knowledge. Short distinguishes Peirce’s mature theory of signs from his better-known but paradoxical early theory. He develops the mature theory systematically on the basis of Peirce's phenomenological categories and concept of final causation. The latter is distinguished from recent and similar views, such as Brandon’s, and is shown to be grounded in forms of explanation adopted in modern science.

I have used this book to aid my studies in therapeutics. While professors gave some cases, the cases in this book helped immensely to get the information down pat.
