Gilbert Morris is my all-time *favorite* series/saga writer!.......2001-03-26
The House of Winslow series is one of the best series I've ever read. They chronicle the life of the Winslows, a fictional family with major historical implications. Gilbert Morris is a wonderful, detailed writer, easily mixing real and fictional people. Mostly, the books pertain to the Methodist faith, though not always.
This set of books covers ground from 1620-1776.
'The Honorable Impostor' is the first book. It begins with Gilbert Winslow, a wayward pastor with ties to the Church of England. He is asked to infiltrate a group of Puritans and help "bring them to justice under the King's law". Through a series of events, he ends up coming, quite unwillingly, to the New World with the group, thereby establishing the House of Winslow in America.
'The Captive Bride' covers two generations of Winslows. Matthew, Gilbert's son, breaks his parents' hearts and is sent off to England to find his roots. Instead, he finds a wife and a heap of trouble. He loses his mind in prison and leaves a heartbroken, pregnant wife to go back to his father. Rachel Winslow grows up without a father in Salem amidst the crazed witch trials. When an unexpected piece of the past confronts her, she has nowhere to turn but God.
'The Indentured Heart' chronicles the life of Adam Winslow, Rachel's nephew. Cruelly abused by a stepmother who's jealous of him, Adam is sent to live with his older brother. He goes into business with his half-brother, Charles, and cousin, Saul. On a fact-finding mission back to England, he finds another abused soul and brings her back as an indentured servant. Charles and Saul try every trick they know to make off with the dark Winslow's part of the business, but end up helping him more than they could ever know.
'The Gentle Rebel' begins right before the American Revolution. It concerns two cousins--Nathan, the son of Adam, and Paul, son of Charles--who are on different sides of the war. When Nathan's younger brother becomes an early casualty of the war, Nathan vows to fight in his place. He has a new "little brother", Laddie, who has a secret of his own.
'The Saintly Buccaneer' finishes out Paul Winslow's story. Paul is Impressed into the British Navy after a hard night of drinking. He wakes up on a ship with a soft-hearted captian and his beautiful daughter with no memory of himself or his horrible past. When the British ship clashes with an American ship on the high seas, he meets someone who sparks a memory--as well as shame.
The Winslow Books are the best!.......2000-05-28
I think that the Winslow series is the best that I have read so far. They leave you in suspense until the end and surprise you sometimes. I would suggest if yoiu like romance and suspense to definetly read this series. I love the Winslow series!
It was interesting but repeated it self........1999-06-03
I liked these books they taught you quite a lot about history and I liked the way the story went through the generations .The story line is pretty predictable when it comes to their love life. I definitely think #1 was the best. You should read them but if you don't like book one then you probably won't like the rest.

Download Description
The last nine Coulter titles have been New York Times bestsellers. When The Rebel Bride first hit the bookstores in 1979, it defied convention and stretched the Regency to the limit. Now Coulter has taken her masterpiece one step further--redone with more pageantry and splendor than ever before.

Depressing, Frustrating and Over-Long .......2007-06-02
Originally released in 1979, this book was rewritten around early 90s and it showed. I found this book to be too wordy at times, like most 80s hist romance novels, and dragged on with mind numbing sameness.
This book started out great, truly, after reading few pages I sat back thinking I found another hit by this talented author. However, the wonderfully feisty, brave cheerful heroine I was starting to really like in this book turned into a childish, whiny, cold, selfish, negative brat.
From there on, the whole book just seemed depressing, with the CONSTANT bickering, depressing dialog. All these two end up doing for 300+ pages is fight, there are no up-lifting moments ( which I find sad for a "romance" novel ). After being bored to death by these two, you get the rape scene, which in no way made any sense. No clue why it was even added on there.... so...
I would not recommend this book, it was over-long, dragged on mostly, I didnt find myself ever laughing, the whole book is cloaked in gloom, very dreary to be honest... overall, I would say I wasted my time.
Try another by this gifted author, she truly is one of the greats.
I could not finish the book........2007-01-15
If I could give a rating less than 1 star, I would have. The book did start out well. Julien was the perfect hero so in love with the heroine. And Kate the perfect endearing heroine. But when Julien asked Sir Oliver (father) for Kate's hand in marriage, Kate got so angry at Julien and started to hate him- as in really loathe him. Isn't it but proper during that era for the man to ask permission from the father first before proposing to the woman? So why is Kate so angry? Julien tried to win her by showing her everything a woman would die for- his love, his comfort and his social standing. What more does she want? But she scorns him and hates him even more. And her hatred lasted until almost the end of the book. Truly unbelievable. How utterly boring and irritating. There was no special moment that made my heart flutter. Kate is not endearing at all. I even hate her already for being so irrational- and so stubborn. Doesn't she know how lucky she is to catch Julien??? Also, if Kate is really a troubled woman, shouldn't it show from the 1st page? She was a carefree, independent and so happy woman. Not at all the characteristic of someone who is troubled with the child abuse and the regular physical abuse of her father. I did not even finish the book. I gave it a try until the 300th page, but couldn't continue anymore for it is just a waste of my precious time. There was also no reason why Julien would rape Kate. He never even tried to be intimate with her at any point in the book. It's just so stupid. The writing style is good though- but the plot is just so bad! I can go on and on... but in the end all I want to say is- Do not waste your time and money with this book. Really- it's not romantic at all. Kate's actions will make you roll your eyes.
Got better - but for me this was a tough read!.......2004-12-19
I really love Coulter novels so it is difficult to rate anything less than a 4 or 5 star. However, this book just was hard to enjoy - it started off just great - Julien meets this beautiful young lady, Kate and is immediately taken with her. He is bored with his rakish life and decides she will be his bride. Kate is also taken with Julien as a friend, and a beautiful friendship ensues. So what happened, that is what is so difficult - Kate never wants to marry anyone and becomes a total shrew! I mean there are just no endearing qualities with Kate until about 250 pages or more later!! Julien tries every single way possible to change her mind. He knows that she has suffered miserable abbuse at the hands of her father, so his first act is to get her away to London. Most of the things Julien does for Kate are truly for her own well being. He is totally besotted over her - they eventually marry - although he has to trick her into that. Nothing he does, no act of kindness nor any gifts, nothing works Kate is just cold and nasty toward her now husband!! Of course Julien has no idea the depths of Kate's problems with feelings and men - and what he does probably offends most of the readers the most. Not that I condone Julien for raping his wife - even though she is blindfolded and does not know it is him. However after all the wonderful things he has done - this is actually when the book finally gets interesting and the characters finally begin to interact emotionally. I believe by now we are well into the second half of the book!! Julien is so full of anquish over what he has done - Kate is so full of remorse for allowing her body to actually enjoy the rapist. And of course Julien is realing from the reality that his virgin bride was not a virgin. Well there are many more things to come and most importantly Julien finally is able to get Kate to come to grips with what has haunted her - the act of being raped and blamed as a young girl! But then once again Kate when she should have been seeking out this wonderful man for sollace and strength - she again becomes a shrew and sends him on his way. Why she changes her mind - I have no idea. For Julien's sake I am glad she did but boy - like I said this was a tough tough read!!!
Five stars for craft, zero for appeal.......2004-04-10
I've got to agree with the reviewers who think rape has no place in a romance novel, particularly rape committed by the "hero." What outraged me the most about this facet of the book isn't the rape per se, however, it's the fact that Coulter would have us believe that the "hero"/rapist is able to give the heroine an orgasm while she'd tied down, blindfolded, and doesn't know it's her husband attacking her. What a sickeningly repellant thing to write! I've loved some of Coulter's other work, but this offended me deeply. (I'm getting to the point where I want to approach any book of hers with a whip and a chair, not sure whether I'm going to find a pussycat or an angry tiger between the covers!)
To give the devil its due, I have to admit that I couldn't put The Rebel Bride down. It's extremely well-crafted; any aspiring writer could learn a lot from the way Coulter keeps the plot racing along, totally centered on the two main characters and their conflict. There's not a dull moment, nor a bland one, though the emotions the text evokes are often very unpleasant ones. Given the subject matter, however, they're not as bad as they might have been; more along the lines of uneasiness and distress than outright horror.
I guess my overall feeling is: Read it at your own risk!
Terrific!.......2003-08-27
At first I wasn't going to purchase this because I thought I'd read the 1970 version. But this one was well-worth the risk. The story is swift and the characters real. To Coulter fans, don't
miss this. It may not be with the series. But it is definitely
a credit to the author.

But first, he must scale the battlements around his lady's heart.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Medieval Romance.......2001-06-03
Shelley Bradley does a commendable job of portraying Kieran and Maeve's disparate viewpoints and why they both feel so strongly about their belief systems. Kieran is sworn to the English king in an age when a man's word is his very honor, while Maeve detests English tyranny because of the rape and plundering that has gone hand-in-hand with it. I've read other romances where the author employs the "born to be enemies" scenario, but this is the first one I've read where the author actually pulls it off without making the heroine come across as an exasperating shrew.
Ordinarily I prefer romances where the hero and heroine both realize their feelings for the other early on and spend the remainder of the book cementing those feelings in one form or another. Such a plot device, however, would feel too unrealistic in His Rebel Bride and Bradley is wise not to use it. Yes, the hero and heroine are mutually attracted to each other from the beginning, but their feelings of genuine attachment happen in baby steps throughout the novel and are borne of thoughtful gestures here and kind actions there. Because of that fact, Kieran and Maeve's romance is a convincing one.
Aside from the well-scripted romance, what brings this novel into 5 star status for me is the complexity of the protagonists themselves. On the surface Kieran seems to be nothing more than a charming ladies man with a grin that kills, but underneath all of his bluster lies a loyal, steadfast man who has experienced much emotional neglect and abuse in his childhood and therefore doesn't really think he'll ever find somebody capable of loving him for himself.
On the surface Maeve is a woman who appears to be stoic and unemotional, but underneath the determined face she wears for everyone is a tenderhearted woman who has grown weary of the bloodshed that has been the direct result of England and Ireland's clash of wills. She is also a woman who is being torn apart, forced to choose between the country and kin she has always known and loved and the husband she is growing increasingly adoring of.
His Rebel Bride is not perfect. There is a plot device used toward the end that seems a trifle too convenient, but it's not so outlandish as to distract from the novel as a whole. Viewed in its entirety, Shelley Bradley has taken a subject matter that is very difficult to convincingly work with and crafted it into a winning novel. Because of all the odds and obstacles the couple must face before finding their happily ever-after, Kieran and Maeve's love story is a powerful one and one that will stay with you long after you close the book.
An amazing story.......2001-04-12
Set in 1484. King Henry needed someone in the Pale to keep peace. A rebellion was forming in Ireland and word had finally arrived that the two young princes, Edward and Richard, were dead. The King needed someone loyal to England to be Lord of Langmore Castle. Thus, someone would have to wed one of the four O'Shea women that lived in the castle. However, the Statute of Kilkenney prohibits the English from marrying the Irish.
Kieran Broderick was half English and half Irish. Being such and one of Henry's best warriors, he was made Earl of Kildare and sent to Langmore Castle. Kieran hated his Irish heredity and loathed the thought of a wife. Of the four, he chose Maeve O'Shea, even though she was betrothed. In fact, her betrothed, Quaid, was currently in a dungeon for killing two Englishmen. Only the youngest sister, Brighid, would even consider Kieran as a husband, but she was too young. The biggest problem was the brother, Flynn, who often disappeared to side with the rebellion.
Maeve vowed to hate Kieran. She wanted freedom for Ireland, but not at the cost of lives. Kieran loved battle. That was obvious. Yet she saw him help her sisters when he did not have to. Slowly, Kieran and Maeve would learn about each other. But there were so many obstacles.
**** An amazing story! The author was able to show what Ireland faced and the awful feeling of loved ones against loved ones! Recommended! ****
The warrior with a heart -- highly recommended.......2001-04-01
Kieran Broderick has known little but warring and fighting all of his life, taking satisfaction in life through his fits, his weapons, and in his bed. He plans to leave England for Spain where he will serve as a mercenary, until the King changes his plans. He tends to ignore court ritual and bed every pretty wench who looks his way, which has earned him the King's displeasure. He has therefore been made the earl of Kildare and King Henry decrees he must go to Ireland. He is half-English and half-Irish; consequently exempt from the law forbidding the English to marry the Irish. He's take possession of Langmore Castle, the home of the O'Shea family. The O'Sheas are a rebellious lot, and bear watching. Kieran is ordered to suppress the rebellion, enforce the peace, organize the army, and marry and breed one of the four O'Shea sisters.
Recognizing Kieran for the rogue that he is, Maeve would like to dismiss Kieran out of hand for being English and a warrior. She considers him both primal and primitive. His kisses are like spiced mead, and he tastes like pure temptation. Betrothed to another, she's shocked he chooses to marry her, despite the fact she's not a virgin. Further, she had thought Kieran, who loves teasing and has a bloodthirsty nature, would consider the rape of women part of the spoils of war. So when he proves his heart by finishing a cradle for her sister, because the father is dead, and comforting another sister who was raped, Maeve finds herself torn between his warrior nature and his kindness.
People listen to Maeve and respect her word. She refuses to present herself as challenging. Kieran would enjoy nothing more than conquering her. But she wants no part of him, only peace. Indeed, she only married him for the hope of peace in Ireland. As part of the rebellion, she must her role as scribe and messenger hidden at all cost. As Kieran comes to their chambers, Maeve desires him even as she believes that her body has betrayed her. To fight her attraction for him, she asks that he wait a fortnight before they share a bed, to give her time to grow used to their sudden marriage. During this time she must spend an hour alone with him each evening, and he will only touch her with one hand and his mouth.
Shelley Bradley weaves a fascinating tale of desire and passion. Maeve quickly learns what a tease a single hand and a mouth can provide! These spirited and wonderfully believable characters provide a marvelous read. THE REBEL BRIDE's sensual love story stirs the senses and the emotions. Highly recommended.
A lusty, intriguing romance from a wonderful writer.......2001-03-06
Kieran Broderick was one of the fiercest warriors in King Henry's realm. Half Irish, half English, and well known for his deadly skills and lustful passions, Kieran was astonished to find out his next assignment for the English throne was perhaps the tamest he ever received. He must travel back to Ireland, take over as Lord of the Pale, and take an Irish miss for his wife. But not just any Irish lass, one of the ladies of the lawless O'Shea family. Kieran girds himself up for an unpleasant adventure, one that soon turns into an quest of romance and pleasure as he picks for his wife the beautiful but feisty Maeve O'Shea. Could he have fallen in love with the enemy?
Maeve O'Shea was loyal to her country, but even more loyal to her family. When forced to wed Kieran, the new English Lord of her home, she goes about it steadfastly and resolved. However, the quick grin of her new master turns her head like no other ever has, even her betrothed but imprisoned fiancé. Soon Miss Maeve finds herself questioning her sanity as passion ignites her heart. As she observes her husband's kindness and gentle ways with her sisters and family, as well as his ferociousness and determination to protect her home, Maeve soon surrenders her heart to the enemy, her husband, her love.
In the final installment of her thrilling series "Brothers In Arms," historic romance author Shelley Bradley wraps up her successful trilogy with the most intriguing of the three warrior knights, the Irish rogue Kieran, and his quest for true love. "His Rebel Bride" has to be the most intriguing of the series, featuring the mysterious Irish lad and his buddies Aric and Drake. Mixing in just the right amount of good-natured humor with sensual passion, Bradley concludes this series on a high note. All three men find the women that match them in love, and you just know the couples go on to lead eventful lives. It would be fun down the road to visit the threesome's children and see how they turned out! Watch for Shelley Bradley to continue to rise as one of the most accomplished new writers in the romance industry. She should have lots of good things to offer for a long, long time.
a fufilling ending to the saga!.......2001-02-15
Kieran Broderick, whom is half Irish, must travel to Ireland to take an Irish wife and bring a stop to the rebellion of the people. He is not pleased with the King's order but ever faithful to the English crown, he reluctantly agrees. Of the four O'Shea sisters, Maeve is the one that catches Kieran's eye but the Irish beauty is against what he stands for and vows not to submit her body or her heart to this handsome rogue.
Kieran and Maeve's story is a very satisfying conclusion to Ms Bradley's medieval trilogy which left me quite fulfilled. With lots of action but most importantly tender moments that I believe readers look for in a romance story. And the love scenes were very nice too! Also hopefully there will be more stories from generations to come. As someone that had never read medievals before reading this trilogy, this author proved to me how great a romance story can be told in this time era. Five hearts all the way around....I loved it!

Yankee Bride and Rebel Bride.......2005-07-11
It did remind me of Gone with the Wind, but that is part of what makes this story so enticing. The war between the Union and Confederates showed that no family was left unscathed by the war for freedom. While I was enthralled with Rose, Garnet seemed to out shine her in the end. Rose is remembered through this tragedy while Garnet suffers from the wish she made years earlier. It was not a fairy tale ending like those so-far. In the end, it is well thought out and practical.
Do Your Research!.......2005-04-24
One of my greatest pet peeves in historical fiction is coming across facts that are blatantly wrong. If you can't take the time to make sure your facts are correct then don't write historical fiction. The prime example in this book comes when the author states that Stonewall Jackson was killed at Gettysburg. Even amateur Civil War historians know this is incorrect.
Aside from the accuracy issues, I did enjoy this book.
Heart Wrenching.......2004-12-19
In this book Peart conveys bawdy flirtation and titillating suspense in an age of Civil War. The insufferable Garnet in her blind love for Malcolm Montrose--wreaks havoc for Malcolm's bride Rose Montrose. She then proves her ruthlessness when after poor Rose dies--she dreams of a life with Malcolm. I was glad when he returned home years later, with a new bride! But, I had to pity Rose, since her ruthless rival outlives her!
Read the original.......2003-11-14
I could not wait to put this book down!!! I think the author got mixed up and just turned Gone With the Wind in to her editor. The plot is very similar and so are the names. As I was reading this book, I found myself wanting to read Gone With the Wind so I could get the facts straight. Just pass this one up and go with the original.
book freak-Excellent!!!!!!.......2002-08-21
This book was Stupendous! It had a great history lesson too. It is great for anyone who loves the show "Gone With The Wind", which to me this book has a great similarity in characters to that story too.

To Claim a Wife.......2005-02-22
Back cover reads:
Two rebellious cousins--and the men tho tame them!
Caitlin Bodine is the black sheep of her family. She's shunned by her cousin Maddie--but no one's bad opinion of her hurts so much as Reno Duvall's. As a young girl, Caitlin hero-worshipped this tough, sexy rancher. As a woman, she's haunted by her reputation and a tragedy Reno will never forgive...
Reno Duvall blames Caitlin for his brother's death. He can't believe she has the nerve to return after all these years--or that he's forced to share his home with her! So why can't he stop thinking about her? Caitlin is simply too wild to wed, but suddenly Reno finds himself longing to claim her as his wife!
Get out your hankies!.......2000-07-21
Caitlin Bodine had returned to her hometown for a last reunion with her dying father, only to be hurt again. She could inherit half her father's ranch IF a blood test proved his paternity. Reno Duvall, her stepbrother and owner of the other half of the ranch, still hated Caitlin for causing his brother's death. He also hated himself for feeling attracted to Caitlin.
An intense, heartwrenching tale of an emotionally abused and neglected woman's fight to accept love despite her feelings of low self-worth. Reno's cruelty is personal and explained, balancing on a thin line between abuse and understandable resentment.
To Claim a Wife claimed a spot in my "keeper" pile!.......1999-06-01
Caitlin Bodine's home, but maybe it would be better if she wasn't. Old wounds have never healed, and the scabs that have formed over the five years she's been gone are easily torn off, leaving her pain raw and exposed. Reno Duvall is confused by Caitlin. He has every reason to hate her, and yet there's something about her that pulls at him. Caitlin and Reno have to face a tormented past before they can move onto the future . . . a future that might include love if they're strong enough to reach for it. Susan Fox's To Claim a Wife is a powerful story of love and forgiveness. I can't wait until its sequel, To Tame a Bride!
Emotionally gripping, fast-paced read.......1999-05-11
Caitlin Bodine has come home to face her father one last time before he dies. She's searching for the love he's denied her her whole life, but instead she finds only contempt and suspicion. In the middle of all her emotional upheaval, she has to deal with Reno Duvall, her first crush and the brother of the man she's accused of killing five years before. Reno Duvall never wanted to see Caitlin Bodine again. The last time he'd seen her had been at the inquest following his brother's death. She'd been exonerated in the eyes of the law, but Reno could never forgive her for her part in Beau's death and indirectly, his mothers. But now he was forced to share ownership of the Broken B Ranch with her. Seeing her brought back feelings he thought had been long forgotten. Through constant confrontations, Caitlin and Reno have to face their past before they can think about a future. TO CLAIM A WIFE is an emotionally gripping, fast-paced read. I was reaching for my first tissue by page fourteen and got so caught up in the story I couldn't put the book down. Susan Fox has the skill of writing angst honed to perfection. This is a wonderful book. I can't wait for Madison's story in TO TAME A BRIDE.

To Tame a Bride.......2005-02-22
Back cover reads:
Two rebellious cousins--and the men who tame them!
Maddie St. John knows that Lincoln Coryell has dismissed her as a spoiled, glamorous socialite. He seems alternately amused and annoyed by her, which infuriates Maddie, as she badly needs his help! Only, pride won't let her admit it--or that she finds his rugged good looks irresistible...
Lincoln Coryell knows he's the first man to stand up to Maddie. He can't believe his bad luck when he's stranded alone with her! Only, to his surprise, this disaster reveals a different side to Maddie. Linc senses the vulnerability beneath her prickly pride and realizes he could be the man to tame her!
Two Mean People........2003-06-29
Don't bother with the tissue. Madison St.John lived with her mean cold grandmother, Caitline Bodine was her much loved cousin, she and Maddie were best friends. Until the only man she ever loved Beau Duvall was killed by her beloved cousin Cat. After Beau's death Maddie hated Cat, and she let that hatred spill into everything she did. She knew her grandmother was mean but much respected.
Lincoln Coryell was a self made man, but because he had to get things the hard way he became mean, hard headed and set in his ways, Link decided he wanted to teach Maddie a lesson.
So when they became stranded he made it his job to push Maddie as hard as he could, until her feet bled, and instead of becoming meaner, she began to melt, she feel in love with Link, because at times, not often but some of the time he showed her tenderness. Link feel in love with Maddie, but she had to be the one to change, not him.
Maddie made up with Cat, and Reno.
Link never really made the hero stamp most of Susan Fox's men do.
This was my least favorite book by Susan Fox.
But don't worry The next book more than makes up for this one, and so does her next 6.
An entertaining story.......2000-04-26
this story is about Maddie and Linc who both stranded after a plane wreck. both of them can't stand each other nerve's. Linc hated Maddie's rudeness and intended to change her bad attitude meanwhile Maddie is in a danger of falling in love with the Texas talking Linc. if you read "To Claim A Bride" written also by Susan Fox, you will find out that Maddie is related to Caitlin, her cousin. Maddie was not close with Caitlin because of a terrible incident. since that Maddie never spoke to her and she rapidly changed from a sweet, soft spoken sweetheart into a sharp tongued woman. this story also potrays how Maddie realized her mistake and tried to change it with Linc's help. it was hard for people who knows her that she's changed but she tried to accept it. this book is really good, it's a combination of love and terrible past.

Playboy Sebastian (Monty) is not amused to be forced back to his homeland of the kingdom of Meridia. Seems his eldest brother has abducated the throne and Sebastian is being forced to take it in his place. The book takes place in the days proceeding the coronation. Emma is the head chef chosen for the coronation banquet. Both meet in less than ideal circumstances. Emma can't seem to stay out of trouble and Sebastion is forever rescuing her. A romance of sorts develops, but both know nothing will come of it due to her lack of suitability as a queen. There is also a interesting plot involving the mysterious circumstances of Sebastians father's death.
A decent teenager-ish romance if that's what your looking for. Not enough steam, well actually none, for me.
