Book Description
They were torn between pride and passion. . .
It was a boastful wager, a bold flirtation meant to win a proposal from the most eligible officer in His Majesty's Royal Dragoons. How was the spoiled and pampered Catherine Augustine Ashbrooke to know the handsome stranger with the brooding midnight eyes would see through her plot and make her the pawn in a dangerous game of his own?
United by a reckless game of chance. . .
Alexander Cameron may have won the highborn English beauty in a duel, but not even the lure of long-forgotten desires could keep him from his meeting with destiny. He had no choice but to carry his reluctant bride off to the Highlands, to a world of ancient blood feuds and a brewing rebellion--a world where fiery passion and breathtaking courage would prove that even legendary warriors could lose their hearts.
Bestselling, award-winning author Marsha Canham sweeps us into the turbulence and romance of Scotland's quest for freedom in a saga of two born enemies whose lives and destinies are irrevocably bound to the fate of an empire.

I need to get my hands on "The Blood of Roses".......2007-09-03
I don't even know where to begin this book was so amazing. I could not put it down, I started reading it Saturday night and finished it Sunday night, barely able to tear myself away to eat during the day.
Marsha Canham has done a brilliant job of combining a great story with history and painting beautiful pictures within her pages. You can't help but love the characters in this story, even though Catherine in her spoiled ways takes some warming up too. Alexander Cameron Is a highlander who wins Catherine in a duel, and is forced to marry her. He uses Catherine to sneak past the English Dragoons, and back into Scotland. Once there the adventure really begins. Even the secondary characters are charming. I'm hopping there will be a bit of a love story between Aluinn and Deirdre, and I want to know what happens to Lauren Cameron, will she be found out? I was so disappointed that I was left hanging at the end to find there is a sequel to conclude this story, but I got over this very quickly when I realized there is a whole other novel waiting out there for me to read... I can't wait.
Once I am done reading the next book "The Blood of Roses" I will be sure to see what else Marsha Canham has written.
A yummy hero and an engaging scottish romance.......2007-02-03
I read Blood of Roses and Pride of Lions in reverse order. While I really didn't care for Blood of Roses (too much war, too much history, too much blood & gore and a tragic ending), I loved Pride of Lions.
The reason I liked POL so much is primarily because of the characterizations of Alex and Catherine. In fact, I instantly fell in love with the luscious hero Alex Cameron (alias Raefer Montgomery). He's a gorgeous, hunky, worldly and sophisticated highlander who has been exiled from his home for 15 years while spending this time on the european continent and is a jacobite spy masquerading as an english merchant. He makes quite a (literal) splash with his entrance when Catherine spies him bathing half-nude at the pond on her father's estate. He's quite witty, suave and self-assured (Catherine equates this with arrogance) while still being able to laugh at himself. He's proud, but then again I think he has alot to be proud of. His brother is laird of one of the most powerful and influential clans in Scotland and they live in a palatial castle/estate. He's quite wealthy because he has made a fortune in the import/export business since he's been in "exile." His skills as a warrior are legendary and he's gorgeous and knows it. Yet he's also filled with self-loathing and afraid to love again because he blames himself for not being able to protect his late wife from rape and murder.
I had trouble understanding why Katherine hated Alex so much in the beginning. I think Katherine's anger was misplaced. Alex was forced to marry her after being caught kissing her at her birthday ball and wasn't trying to ruin her life. Instead, She should have blamed her father for ruining her life by forcing the marriage in order to "protect her reputation." The only thing Alex did to bring about this turn of events was to kiss her and when questioned, insolently admit that he "saw something he wanted and took it," causing him to be forced into a duel he didn't want to fight. Even so, being the better swordsman and having "won", he could easily have killed his opponent, Hamilton, and instead he decides to show mercy and walk away after delivering the incapacitating blow, this depite Hamilton's demands to "finish" him (the duel was to be to the death). He could also have insisted on his conjugal rights once he was married to Catherine, but the fact that he didn't do either of these things indicates to me that he's a kind man. Despite his suffering and bad experiences, he's still able to be kind and is never deliberately cruel unless he's fighting to defend someone he loves--then he's absolutely ruthless.
Alex is also still terribly hurt and vulnerable over his late wife's rape and murder 15 years ago (for which he blames himself) and as a result won't let himself care about any woman, instead opting for a string of mistresses over the years. When he and our headstrong, fiesty, independent heroine Catherine meet, the sparks fly right away. At first she hates him, callling him arrogant and heartless (he doesn't seem like such a bad guy to me--after all he only injures the man she's in love with (Hamilton Garner) rathering than fighting him to the death as the terms of the duel call for. Then, he's willing to give her an annulment once they reach the next town. That is, until she finds out he's a "murderer" and jacobite spy and threatens to turn him into the authorities. When Catherine confronts Alex about the murder, he admits to it, while too proud to explain that he killed his late wife's murderers, who had forced him to watch her rape and murder. After Katherine's threats to turn him in, Alex then realizes he can't release her until he makes it home to scotland or she will sick the authorities on him. Still, he is willing to release her and send her home.
Alex has been fighting his attraction to Catherine for weeks and trying not to touch her until she pushes him over the edge one day. Still, he doesn't force himself on her, but seduces her. The two finally passionately consumate their marriage and Katherine declares her love shortly thereafter despite the fact that Alex feels guilty about it, and says that it was all his fault and that he was motivated by pure selfishness (despite the fact that she wanted it as much as he did). When Catherine is soon therafter kidnapped by the men who raped and murdered his late wife, it's like Alex is reliving his worst nightmare and he risks his life to save her and finally admits to himself and Catherine that he loves her too.
I found the story very touching and especially liked Alex's character development. He was very appealing in terms of how he was described physically as well as his strong but kind personality. I consider him the perfect hero--gorgeous, strong, witty, educated, wealthy and a passionate lover. Being a bit tortured as well only makes him more attractive.
I liked this novel so much that, in the historical romance genre, I think Marsha Canham is the only author who can hold a candle to Diana Gabaldon (Outlander). I only wish the sequel, BOR, had concentrated more on the H/H rather than the war.
Overall, I rate it excellent and a worthwhile read if you have any interest in historical romance or Scotland.
PRIDE COMETH BEFORE THE FALL..........2006-12-16
This is a romantic historical novel that will keep the reader turning the pages. Steeped in Scottish and English history during the time of the Jacobite rebellion, the author finely hones the romance against this tumultuous historical backdrop. While I am not particularly enamored of romance novels, this one certainly kept my interest due to the author's attention to historical detail.
When eighteen year old Catherine Ashbrooke, the spoiled minx of a daughter of a Member of Parliament, plots to get a handsome lieutenant in the Royal Dragoons to propose marriage to her, her plan backfires. Instead, she finds herself forced by her father into a shotgun wedding with a veritable stranger, the darkly handsome, wealthy, and mysterious merchant, Raefer Montgomery.
Miserable that her seemingly well-laid plan had gone so awry, Catherine is taken by her new husband on a journey to Scotland. On the way, she has many adventures and soon discovers that her husband is not who he purported to be. It turns out that Raefer is really Alexander Cameron, a dashing highlander who had spent many years in exile due to an ancient blood feud gone badly with the Campbell clan. He is now returning home to Castle Achnacarry with Catherine, she a reluctant bride and he a reluctant husband.
Thrust into the Cameron clan, Catherine and Alexander fight the mutual attraction that they have for each other only to succumb to a passion that would seal their fates and dictate the turn of events that would bind them as one. As suddenly as they discover their passion for one another, however, Catherine is rent from Alexander, when the ancient blood feud with the Cambell clan once again rears its ugly head and threatens all that Catherine and Alexander now hold dear.
I found myself compulsively turning the pages of this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am now looking forward to reading the sequel, "The Blood of Roses". Those readers who enjoy historical romances will find much to like in this adventure packed novel that has just the right amount of romance.
Riveting with enduring characters you'd love to love and hate.......2006-08-27
Raefer Montgomery, a wealthy merchant, agreed to meet Damien, his lawyer and good friend, at his father's estate. While there, he became the unwitting victim of Damien's sister's plans to make her boyfriend Hamilton jealous. This was not the first time she's done this and, as before, Hamilton challenged Raefer to a duel, certain that he would win by killing Raefer for daring to put his hands on Catherine.
Raefer, however, won the duel but allowed Hamilton to live. Catherine's father decided that he'd had enough of Catherine's scandalous behavior and forced Raefer and Catherine to marry, literally at knifepoint. Catherine is appalled and is determined to get an annulment as soon as she's able. Raefer is of the same mind.
Raefer is not who he seems and Catherine soon discovers this on their way to Fort William. Their initial plan was to travel there and get an annulment. Raefer would send Damien a note to collect his sister and he would be on his way to the highlands. However, Raefer's past quickly catches up with him when he discovers that his enemies know he's back in England and are laying a trap for his capture.
Raefer and his traveling companions quickly ditch the route to Fort William and flee to Cameron lands where he's expected. He drags an enraged Catherine to the highlands where she eventually discovers that Raefer is really Alexander Cameron, a renowned warrior who, until now, has been exiled to France for the murders of the men who raped and killed his first wife.
Catherine and Alex eventually discover a strong love for each other. However, the winds carry with it the echoes of a coming war and Alex decides that the only way to keep Catherine safe would be to send her back to her father's home. Catherine is hurt and angered by his decision but obeys him, fearing that she may never him alive again.
In the beginning, I was prepared to not like this book because of Catherine. She is a very hard character to like because she is thoroughly spoiled, self-centered, and has hardly any sympathy for everyone. To her, the world revolves simply to do her bidding. I came very close to tossing this book aside for one with more likable characters. However, Catherine begins to redeem herself as she matures into her role of woman and wife. Alex has a lot of patience with her and I think it's with his love and guidance that allows Catherine to be more of a compassionate and courageous woman who deserves to be by his side.
This was a great tale, despite my reservations at the beginning of it. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
An Epic romance..........2006-08-24
"The Pride of Lions" and its sequel "the blood of roses" tell the story of Catherine and Alexander, two people from different worlds, who fall in love against all odds. The hero Alexander, is just gorgeous. This is what I would call a romance saga, of love and war, of tradegy and beauty. Highly recommended!

You saw the animated film, you bought the video, you couldn't get tickets to the stage show--here's the coffee-table book. But wait: what keeps The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway from being just another commercial Disney tie-in is the iconoclastic voice of director/designer Julie Taymor. She uses the text of this book as a diary for her personal struggle to merge her off-off-Broadway avant-garde sensibility with Disney's unabashedly bigtime commercial one. Her chronicle lends context to the already lush and abundant illustrations, photographs, and sketches of Taymor and her collaborators at work.

Perfect!.......2007-07-13
I came home from a production of The Lion King staged in Appleton, Wisconsin, and was so enthralled I immediately set out to find out "How did they do that?" This book met and exceeded by expectations. I am an amateur costumer and puppeteer and this just the stuff to bring a smile to my face. Before this book I was not aware of Julie Taymor by name (Sorry, from a small town, don't get out much) but I will be looking for her work from now on.
Amazing.......2006-02-22
I have seen the stage production of the Lion King twice--in Toronto and East Lansing, MI. Vendors offered a souvenir photo brochure for $20. For only a few dollars more, I purchased Julie Taymor's book from Amazon describing one of the most amazing creative achievements I have ever seen. Get the book! See the show!
Just what I was after..........2005-09-29
This book shows the "creation story" of the Lion King musical. Photos of the workshopping teams in their studio/s, sketches of early ideas, through to finished costuming displayed on the artists themselves.
A pity this book was not available in Australia, but thanks to Amazon I received it in about 3 weeks total.
Better than this..........2005-09-25
...is seeing the show live. From intellectual concept, to extensive and authentic research, to development with constant referral to the physical, metaphysical, intrinsic, to the workshop...to the stage. One will see that Julie Taymor was THE RIGHT visionary to not only help in the translating an animated film to live theater, but to also retain the human moral behavior and lessons that are paramount for the existence of all people.
Brilliant.......2004-09-27
The Lion King on broadway is by far the best most amzing show ever created. Whats so amazing is that the book is as good as the musical. Without Julie Taymor the lion king would not be such a huge success as it is and you find all about this in the book. Some of the pictures of the show itself and the costumes are just wonderful which makes the presentation of the book even more wonderful. I dont even read books but am findin it very hard to put this down and read it over and over again. If you require any info, or are just curious email me simba262626@yahoo.com to discuss this amazing book.
Book Description
Lion of Ireland was the breathtaking chronicle of Brian Boru, the Great King who led the bickering chiefs of Ireland to unity under his reign. He overthrew traditions, reformed society, and became the Irish Charlemagne. The Ireland of 1014 was a dream Brian Boru had dreamed and brought into being. Now, with all the fire and brilliance for which her writing is known, Morgan Llywelyn takes us there, to the battlefield where Brian died, and to Brian's fifteen-year-old son, Donough, whose mother is the voluptuous and treacherous Gormlaith, with her lust for life and power undiminished by age: Donough, the son who is determined to make the High Kingship of Brian Boru's Ireland his own."I know he's too young, but he's all we have left," says Fergal, and thus the boy takes his first command, on the bloody ground of Clontarf. From there he must move to establish his right to rule in Kincora and to make the kings of Ireland accept him as their High King.Yet Donough is torn--torn by his hatred for his mother and by his all-consuming passion for the beautiful pagan girl Cera, who remains beyond his reach, for the High King must have a Christian consort......

History's lessons and a Son's pride.......2007-09-10
Pride of Lions, by Morgan Llywelyn, is the sequel to Lion of Ireland, a fictional account of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland. Pride of Lions follows the children of Brian Boru as they struggle in the political and social chaos of Ireland after the Battle of Clontarf, which resulted in a victory of the Irish over Vikings but loss of Brian Boru and his heir. The story is from the point of view of Brian's youngest son Donnchad or Donough as he prefers to be called. Donnchad is the son of Brian and his 2nd wife Gormlaith.
Donough has struggles to learn politics as he tries to emulate his father in every way. He fights many fronts socially in his family as he is torn between supporting his one remaining half brother Teague, who is older and claims the Kingship of Munster. He is also driven by his Mother who is ever working her political schemes for gain and revenge. He finds love in a Druid woman yet struggles to make a marriage and political alliances through his sisters' husbands who includes the King of Dublin and King of Scots. His wife is tied with the Saxon and Dane families in England, and helps Brian lay a foundation for his ultimate goal of claiming his father's title of High King of Ireland.
He is frustrated and young and seems to struggle on every front. At times while reading this book I felt the same feelings. It is definitely a different story than Pride of Lions. I didn't like the path the book was taking and yet was saved in the final chapters. The ending wonderful and I truly loved Donough's final choices. He proves that one can be successful by not repeating history. Donough showed he can live up to his father's fame and learn from his mistakes. I love the path Morgan Llywelyn took and the message sent. Pride of Lions is a lesson in life, achievement and self-worth as well as a great book and wild ride.
There's one thing..........2006-05-05
There's one thing I love about Llywelyn. She writes this book in short chapters. I mean short. Seriously, if I ever become a novelist, this is how I will write. Andrew M. Greeley does the same thing and look at him. You pick up the book - right before bed - and you say, "oh, just a chapter before bed." Ten chapters later, 15 minutes later, you think, "Well that wasn't so bad.... ANOTHER CHAPTER THEN!!" It goes like that until you're bleary-eyed and exhausted, but the book is finished and you're headed off to the used book store to trade it, because everyone loves to read Llywelyn and you know they'll take it.
I know, I should be commenting on the plot, the depth, the scope, the RESEARCH. Honestly, I could care less. It was pretty interesting as a read, it didn't say much you don't already know (if you like reading about the Irish, which I do), and it went quickly. Great for a read while on the beach really. You just don't have to think too much about it, and you certainly don't have to read any paragraphs twice to get-the-deeper-meaning. After a long day at the office, that suits me just fine.
These Lions Also Roar!.......2005-02-15
I couldn't get enough of "Lion of Ireland", so "Pride of Lions" was a natural next-read. This book, like the first, was also virtually impossible to put down, although I have to admit may not be as good as the first. The ways that the different players scheme to align themselves to Brian Boru's crown is very enjoyable to follow, but the ending leaves something to be desired. I won't give it away, but the ending almost leaves the reader feeling as though the book was rushed and the ending had to be thrown together quickly. Other than that, the book is a very worthy to successor to the story of Brian Boru, and a very fascinating look at the dark and bloody past of the Irish.
minority report.......2004-02-20
I guess I am in the minority here since I didn't think this book was anywhere close to Lion of Ireland. While Pride of Lions proves to be very readable and somewhat interesting book, I thought it was pretty lightweight material and it really wasn't that exciting as Lion of Ireland. I supposed there were few good spots but overall, the book slogs through the story.
I think the weakness lies in the length. My paperback version got only 395 pages. This story needs more. But what this story really need was a character, interesting, heroic and true and to be honest, the lead character Donough really don't fit the mode.
While I enjoyed Lion of Ireland, this follow-up book falls short. This doesn't mean you shouldn't read it if you enjoyed the first book. Just be prepared that maybe it won't taste good as it smell.
Great beginning, falls flat.......2002-11-19
In her follow-up to the wonderful "Lion of Ireland," Morgan Llywelyn picks up where she left off, spinning the tale of Donough, Brian Boru's eldest surviving son. Her vivid style and talent with words continues the legend she brought back to life with her previous novel. The battle in which Donough, his troops battle-ravaged and starving, face their enemies as hundreds of CuChullains will bring chills to your spine as you read. However, although the novel starts off with the potential to live up to her previous triumph, the book comes to an all to quick and unsatisfying ending.

When Colonel Theodore Roosevelt led his Rough Riders up the San Juan Ridge in 1898, it was one of the most daring exploits of the Spanish-American War. Colleagues would later report that, seemingly oblivious to the threat of death, Roosevelt "was just reveling in victory and gore," collecting spent cartridges as souvenirs for his four sons while shells exploded around him. His martial vigor served as a model to those sons, one that they took to heart, but their own experiences of war were far removed from TR's swashbuckling adventure.
At the end of World War I, the youngest Roosevelt son--Quentin--was dead, shot down in the skies over France. Theodore Jr. (Ted) and Archie both sustained serious injuries, and Archie suffered from bouts of serious depression many times in the years afterwards. Yet they both served, along with their brother, Kermit, in World War II as well. At 57, Ted was the oldest American participant in the Normandy invasion; Archie became the only U.S. soldier ever to be classified as 100% disabled twice in his career.
The Lion's Pride tells all their stories with thoroughness and graceful simplicity. Although military historians will surely appreciate its combat narratives, it is at heart a family saga, a tale with profound emotional resonance for parents and children alike.
Book Description
In The Lion's Pride, Edward J. Renehan, Jr. vividly portrays the grand idealism, heroic bravery, and reckless abandon that Theodore Roosevelt both embodied and bequeathed to his children and the tragic fulfillment of that legacy on the battlefields of World War I. Drawing upon a wealth of previously unavailable materials, including letters and unpublished memoirs, The Lion's Pride takes us inside what is surely the most extraordinary family ever to occupy the White House. Theodore Roosevelt believed deeply that those who had been blessed with wealth, influence, and education were duty bound to lead, even--perhaps especially--if it meant risking their lives to preserve the ideals of democratic civilization. Teddy put his principles, and his life, to the test in Spanish American war, and raised his children to believe they could do no less. When America finally entered the "European conflict" in 1917, all four of his sons eagerly enlisted and used their influence not to avoid the front lines but to get there as quickly as possible. Their heroism in France and the Middle East matched their father's at San Juan Hill. All performed with selfless some said heedless courage: Two of the boys, Archie and Ted, Jr., were seriously wounded, and Quentin, the youngest, was killed in a dogfight with seven German planes. Thus, the war that Teddy had lobbied for so furiously brought home a grief that broke his heart. He was buried a few months after his youngest child. Filled with the voices of the entire Roosevelt family, The Lion's Pride gives us the most intimate and moving portrait ever published of the fierce bond between Teddy Roosevelt and his remarkable children.

A Truly Unique and Fascinating American Family.......2007-01-29
Completely understanding TR is impossible without considering his children, or his own childhood for that matter. These are the foci of the "The Lion's Pride: Theodore Roosevelt and His Family in Peace and War." TR was deeply influenced by his father, a wealthy and generous, many would claim great man whose most glaring defect and regret was what amounted to a buy out of his Civil War service obligation. TR called him the "greatest man I ever knew." Yet, in many respects TR spent the rest of his life attempting to overcome and reverse this blemish upon the family record through extraordinary patriotism and service. Leading at the apex of conflict and danger was the duty of a great and privileged family. This credo was embraced wholeheartedly by his children, which makes for fascinating reading. While some would argue this compulsion became excessive and detrimental, the Roosevelt's had no regrets and curiously embraced their family tragedies in the midst of great pain. This phenomenon is particularly evident in the death of the youngest, Quintin while flying patrol over German lines in WWI. On the other hand, if you are looking for an in depth look at any one or more of the children this book will not suffice. Indeed, the early chapters focus on TR's life leading up to WWI, while the latter chapters are largely dedicated to his offspring's activities in young adulthood, particularly those related to the Great War. There is little regarding TR's close and often tender relationship with his children during their childhood in the White House or at Sagamore Hill. As a result, while I greatly enjoyed this book, I was hoping for more breadth and insight into the children's upbringing and their lives after TR's death.
Excellent distillation of Roosevelt's last years.......2006-12-06
Renehan's accounting of the last years of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. is condensed and fascinating. Mostly covering 1898 and 1910-1919, the book provides insight into the southern New York high society of the early 20th century. Famous names, including Vanderbilt, Roosevelt, Cowles, and Coolidge, parade across the pages.
Nuggets include the mention of Harvard in that time as a conservative and pro-military bastion (compared to today's institution fighting military recruitment in court), Woodrow Wilson viewed as an appeaser, a coward, and an appointer of bigots in his administration (in contrast to a reputation as being a visionary negotiator), observation by Gen. George Patton that Theodore's eldest son, Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt III, was a courageous commander- but no soldier (both father and son won the Medal of Honor...a feat perhaps not matched by any other American family), and the contrast highlighted between Kaiser Wilhelm's non-combat patronage of his sons (during WWI) and the former president Roosevelt's sons participating in front line combat. Another interesting fact: three of Roosevelt's four sons died in military service--one killed in action, one dead of a heart attack a month after D-Day and one day before he was to be promoted to major general, and one a suicide). The fourth suffered from the long term effects of severe war wounds.
Roosevelt is also revealed as a founding father of the original progressive movement...born out of the Republican party, no less. "Progressive" used to mean advocating sensible capitalism through the restraint of unlimited power of large corporations (through the Sherman Act) and the promotion of sound environmental policy and conservation. It also demanded the U.S. government uphold its main role--that of national defense. This is in stark contrast to today's "progressive" thinking--complete rejection of market economics and corporations, radical environmentalism, and pacifism. Roosevelt must spin in his grave.
All in all a great primer of the former president. Makes you want to immediately run out and read more.
Love TR.......2006-04-12
I read any book on TR. This one I was hoping would reveal more about his family. It still is a good read about TR.
Inspiring.......2005-07-27
This book made me want to be a better, more involved citizen. It really gets at the heart of this incredible family.
A giant of a man with a giant family .......2005-05-10
This is one of the best biographies of Theodore Roosevelt that I have ever read. It is interesting when you read this book and compare the legacy of the Roosevelt family and the Kennedy family. This is just my own opinion but I think the Roosevelt have more personality then all of the Kennedy family which is strange considering that the Roosevelt's are more overlooked.
Roosevelt was in effect the first of the modern politicians but still elements of the old school.
He was arrogant, a jingoist, and bombastic. He was also larger then life and an honest man in his own way. He also made sure that two of his sons served with the ground forces during WWI. That is something that cannot be said politicians today.

The author has collected very readable stories telling how celebrities have become Christians, and they share their low points and their joys here. This is a welcome peek into the lives of well known people who typically are more secretive.
Ricky Skaggs, Kirk Cameron, Gloria Gaynor, Bethel Johnson (34 people in all) tell about their struggles and their early days as new Christians.
Billy Ray Cyrus tells of singing in his grandpa's Pentecostal church when he was 4, and includes the touching lyrics to the song he wrote "The other side."
Jackie (Jacklyn) Zeman, star of General Hospital, advises that when you are at a crossroads "cry out to God and ask for His guidance."
Al Kasha's story resonated with me; this Academy Award winning songwriter overcame agoraphobia, and talks about how Hollywood is a tough place for a Jew who came to Christ, and how he started a Hollywood Bible study group.
There are stories here for anyone to enjoy and find spirit lifting.
Celebrities talk about God in their life.......2007-04-27
(Hagberg has written a companion book with the same title, subtitled God Unplugged)
How Do You Know He's Real? is a collection of celebrity essays about God acting in their lives. The contributors include athletes, musicians, and actors. Their stories often follow a familiar pattern of fame leading to drugs and alcohol before hitting bottom and being turned around by an encounter with God. That's not to say the accounts are all stock and cliched, but rather that God meets each person in their need--and for celebrities that need will be similar. And many of the tales include growing up in stable Christian homes, but still needing to make personal decisions about God and Christ and how that decision impacted their careers.
The stories are collected alphabetically but Hagberg has provided a topic finder so a reader battling discouragement or frustration can find offerings from Billy Ray Cyrus, Nancy Stafford, Zorro, Gary Burghoff or John Schneider.
Each essay begins with a picture and short biography of the contributor, listing their accomplishments. Following the selection is God's Road Map, a few sentences about the issues raised by the author, with Bible verses for teaching and encouragement.
The essays themselves are as varied as the contributors. Some of them read as if they were written to be given as speeches. Several sound like the writer could be sitting at your kitchen table, chatting over the coffee pot. All of them are honest and share from their heart how God has acted in their life and how they know He's real.
Reading the accounts of God acting in both miraculous and mundane ways reminds us that no matter what a person does for a living, each of us are created beings who need a loving Savior and merciful God.

You have to get this book!.......2007-01-30
I had the privilege of meeting Mike Bullock at the Phoenix * Cactus Comicon, and not only is he a great guy, he's a fabulous writer and has created a world that any kid would love to dive into head first. How many times have you had nightmares about monsters under your bed, or creepy beasts lurking in your closet? Were you ever so terrified that you couldn't so much as move to run out of your room? Mike has created a world where the stuffed animals come to life to protect their owners from those evil creatures. The art in this book is simply gorgeous, and the story is a blast. Whether you're 10 or over 50, you won't be able to put it down! It's obvious why Hollywood has come a callin'.
A Classic Tail... er Tale!.......2007-01-17
I love comic books, and I love children's books! So Lions, Tigers, and Bears by Mike Bullock and Jack Lawrence was a dream come true for me!
Bullock and Lawrence draw us into a grand adventure with a child's eye view! Young Joey is given a set of stuffed animals by his grandmother. He's told they'll protect him. Little does he suspect how true this is! When the beasties come to get him, Joey's stuffed guardians spring to life and protect him! What follows is an incredible and touching story that leads Joey through the Stuffed Animal Kingdom!
Between Bullock's vivid writing and Lawrence's stunning visuals, Lions, Tigers, and Bears is as near perfect as any all-ages comic out there! There is no denying this comic is destined to be remembered and treasured for generations to come.
BRILLIANT all-ages read.......2007-01-01
This is one of those comics that I found relatively late. I didn't read it when it first came out, and now I've caught up and can't wait for more. Jack Lawrence and Mike Bullock have crafted a story with a very simple premise: stuffed animals are really alive, and have been charged since the beginning of time with the task of protecting their children from the "Beasties" (literally the monsters in the closet). This story focuses on two children tied in to this ancient symbiotic relationship, charged with its future, who have come under the Beasties' wrath, and the noble stuffed animals -- the Night Pride -- charged with their protection.
The story is wonderful -- the characters are vivid and there's plenty of action and fantasy to go around. The artwork is equally as good -- Bullock's art leaps off the page, full of energy and vibrant colors. If nobody in Hollywood has tapped this yet for an animated film (a TRADITIONALLY animated film), then everyone in Hollywood is out of their minds. I absolutely love this book, and I can't wait for more.

America is at a critical moment in its history. Behind us lies Vietnam, Hiroshima, a legacy of war. Clearly, in this nuclear age, our future -- our very survival -- depends on our ability to break our "war habit."
But obstacles stand in the way. One of them, incredibly, is religion.
In THE LIONS' PRIDE Leonard Sweet focuses on the sometimes all-too-cozy relationship in America between religion and war. Sweet takes a close look at America's "with God on our side" militarism, examining its historical origins and consequences. Employing both historical and biblical perspectives, THE LION'S PRIDE offers fresh, powerful insights into:
* America's dominant war mentality
* How our war language affects our war thinking
* How Christian peacemaking can be realistically "put to work" in a frighteningly sinful and complex world.
An indispensable resource for every Christian who desires a workable vision of peace in this nuclear age.
