I cannot find fault with this fine effort. Southern Cooking is solid, but illusive, unless you have lived in the south...this book is a real pleasure to read and to follow should one be so inclined.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-28

I love this book, after I got it, I saw it at a high end culinary shop--boy was I impressed that I already had it!!!
      terrific condition, wonderful service provider!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-07-16

A fabulous book. I have been seeking a good Southern cookbook for the past several years, ever since I borrowed Damon Lee Fowler's classic from the library and then later realized it was out of print. This one seems to cover all of the classic recipes I was seeking, along with other wonderful surprises. It really fits the bill! The first recipe I made was the pimento cheese, and it was great. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A Cookbook Worth Waiting For.......2007-04-03

Get thyself immediately on-line to Amazon.com or your local book shoppe and run right by all those tomes on American cooking, New England cooking, Western Cooking, Canadian cooking, and Aunt Betty's crook pot favorites and grab a copy of James Villas's "The Glory of Southern Cooking." This is a no nonsense guide to some of the best recipes one could have in their repertoire of culinary favorites. I love the one recipe per page along with some pithy commentary on origin and preparatory advise. And do I ever love that most of the required ingredients are what one finds in most kitchens. Clearly this cook book goes to the top of the pile!

      Book Description

Readers who fell in love with Precious Ramotswe, proprietor of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, now have new cause for celebration in the protagonist of these three light-footed comic novels by Alexander McCall Smith. Welcome to the insane and rarified world of Professor Dr. Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld of the Institute of Romance Philology. Von Igelfeld is engaged in a never-ending quest to win the respect he feels certain he is due–a quest which has the tendency to go hilariously astray.

In At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances, Professor Dr. von Igelfeld gets caught up in a nasty case of academic intrigue while on sabbatical at Cambridge. When he returns to Regensburg he is confronted with the thrilling news that someone from a foreign embassy has actually checked his masterwork, Portuguese Irregular Verbs, out of the Institute’s Library. As a result, he gets caught up in intrigue of a different sort on a visit to Bogota, Colombia.

3 out of 5 stars Charming but not engaging.......2007-10-10

Fun, simple read but not enough to make me want to read more of this series. I was never really sure what the point was and yes there is some satire to be found, but maybe just too subtle for my taste.

3 out of 5 stars Von Igelfeld and the Villa of Reduced Circumstances.......2007-05-13

I LOVE McCall Smith's books. Read the entire Ladies' Detective Agency series. This third part of Dr. Dr. Moritz Maria von Igelfeld is the least engaging of the three. Having lived in Germany, I was interested in Von Igelfeld's cultural approach to life. His thinking is funny, and I DO like McCall-Smith's humor and insight. However, as he travels around, at one point becoming the President of Columbia, doesn't bring forth McCall-Smith's sense of humor as much. The first two had me hating to put it down, this one I had to get myself to finish it. It does better as an audio book.

4 out of 5 stars Feeling Depressed? .......2007-05-07

If you need a lift, this book, along with the others in this series will do it. The improbable adventures of Professor Dr. von Igelfeld are wonderfully funny, the books are short, and, yes we can love a pompous stuffed shirt.

      5 out of 5 stars Inspired Wildness.......2007-03-16

Hard to describe this other than as hilariously and totally out-of-control in the most charming and literate way. This is author Alexander Mccall Smith's wild side. If you like farce--this is witty farce, and not to be missed.

      5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2006-12-22

This is the first Alexander McCall Smith book that I've listened to. The audio version is funny as heck...especially von Igelfeld's toilet difficulties at Cambridge. The narrator has captured the true essence of our German hero! I highly recommend it...I even sent a copy to my dad. He loved it too!

This pattern is made up of lines, shapes, proportions, body particulars, scale, colors, and textures. How they fit together in harmony and how an individual infuses them with her innate creativity is what authors call "style."

      Text Features:

1.Principles of art as they apply to understanding and enhancing the female body
2.Art reproductions from museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Musee du Louvre, illustrating women's body forms and surface features

1 out of 5 stars If 'unuseful' were a word, I'd use it........2006-04-09

I am a fashion designer who was looking for some good resource books to help with figure-appropriate designs. I came across this book after a long search and thought I had found gold. Unfortunately, it was not what I expected. I was really disappointed with the line sketches used to explain clothing choices and found those designs to be VERY outdated- especially considering the second printing was in 2002. For example, I could not disagree more with the advice for rectangular-shaped women- that they should opt for sack dresses that ignore the waist, rather than trying to create one.
The chapters on jewlery choices and color charts were equally useless.
I would not recommend this book to any fashion designer looking for figure-flattering design elements. "Dress Your Best" by Stacy London and Clinton Kelly is by far a better choice- especially considering the price.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-03-10

This bok with it`s beautiful drawings adds dimension to it`s material. This is a must for people who want to look their best and also a great book for clothing designers as weel as image consultants.

      5 out of 5 stars Valuable for a seamstress.......2006-02-27

I found this book six years ago in the libarary. I took copious notes from it over the next few years I checked it out. I finally purchased it and with every reading get more tips for style. I wish I had purchased it sooner.
I sew and it has proven valuable for things like selecting prints, woking with fabric texture, and determining hemline, waistline and neckline lengths and widths. Other books tell me what to do to achieve an effect, but this one tells me why.
I am exploring style and trying to develop more creativity in my sewing. I think this is the best guide around for that purpose. It also would have been a good companion for my "Dress for Success" efforts a few decades ago.

5 out of 5 stars What a joy to read!.......2005-07-09

Having been frustrated by all the books that ask you to slot yourself into one of 4 to 6 body types, I felt incredibly lucky to come across this work in my local public library. Creative in its presentation, with a literary content missing in many how-to books, and with inspiring illustrations, the book was constantly missing from my library. I now own three copies, just so I can lend two out to friends!

      Book Description

"Villa's work locates artistic production within its proper social and historical contexts without reducing art to an unmediated reflection of unjust social relations.... This will be an important book for scholars in Chicano studies, but perhaps even more important as a model for blending cultural texts with their sociological contexts."

—George Lipsitz, Professor of Ethnic Studies, University of California, San Diego

Struggles over space and resistance to geographic displacement gave birth to much of Chicano history and culture. In this pathfinding book, Raúl Villa explores how California Chicano/a activists, journalists, writers, artists, and musicians have used expressive culture to oppose the community-destroying forces of urban renewal programs and massive freeway development and to create and defend a sense of Chicano place-identity.

Villa opens with a historical overview that shows how Chicano communities and culture have grown in response to conflicts over space ever since the United States' annexation of Mexican territory in the 1840s. Then, turning to the work of contemporary members of the Chicano intelligentsia such as Helena Maria Viramontes, Ron Arias, and Lorna Dee Cervantes, Villa demonstrates how their expressive practices re-imagine and re-create the dominant urban space as a community enabling place. In doing so, he illuminates the endless interplay in which cultural texts and practices are shaped by and act upon their social and political contexts.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The future of Chicana/o studies.......2000-06-11

Villa's brilliant analysis of Chicano/a struggles over space and identity in the conquered Southwest shows us how studies of Mexican American culture can retain their political commitment in a post-ethical universe of globalized consumerism and cynical academic celebrities. .His readings of visual and written texts are a fascinating synthesis of aesthetic and historical knowledges. Book Description

The great Villa constructed by the Emperor Hadrian near Tivoli between A.D. 118 and the 130s is one of the most original monuments in the history of architecture and art. In this beautiful book, two distinguished architectural historians describe and interpret the Villa as it existed in Roman times and track its extraordinary effect on architects and artists up to the present day.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars About timeless beauty.......2004-03-03

First of all, it is a beautiful book. For anyone who already has visited the Villa, just the cover is truly moving, with the line of trees next the palestra, as moving is the Piranesi graffiti photo. The reader must also understand the book is about a ruin and accept some degree of frustration with descriptions and the current outlook of monuments, but MacDonald and Pinto are very sucessful in freeing our imagination to wander among the profound design and intentions of Hadria's Villa. A collection of monuments that is too the empire, the memories of a life and a message to the future. Even the authors seemed amazed, for instance, by the Maritime Theater plan or the use of landscape. It is a book to be read again and again.

5 out of 5 stars The ancient Romans created a provocative architecture........1998-02-16

MacDonald/Pinto assert that Hadrian forged a new and innovative architectural system which integrated buildings with nature and human use. Hadrian's goal was to create an arrangement of buildings which were functional and yet challenged the intellect to contemplate the unseen world. They also make a very strong case for the pervasive influence which this complex villa has had on archtecture from ancient times to the present. This book makes one realize that Roman architecture is indeed relevant to the present.

This volume examines the primary themes of her multi-faceted work, from her theory of totalitarianism and her controversial idea of the "banality of evil" to her classic studies of political action and her final reflections on judgment and the life of the mind. Each essay examines the political, philosophical, and historical concerns that shaped Arendt's thought.

        Book Description

        5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-08-22

I find it difficult to believe that people could look at this book, which not only has a 1) a non-American book cover look, 2) a Spanish language review, 3) a Spanish language title, 4) a breadcrumb list that showed it was from the Spanish section of Amazon, 5) a Spanish publisher, 6) a language listing (Spanish) right above the ISBN-10, and 7) a rather unusual price for a mass market paperback, and still think it was in English. For those completists out there, it is the spanish version of The House by Danielle Steel. For everyone else, the fact that you "didn't notice" it was in Spanish is not a decent reason to give a book a 1 star rating, particularly since the average rating for this book in English is three stars.

        1 out of 5 stars LA ILLA.......2007-07-20

I did not want a book in Spanish, so I had to return it. I don't know if it comes in English. It should be clearly stated what language it is in. This would be very helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Inacaurate Marketing book 2.......2007-07-17

This review is not of the item purchased in as much of the marketing ploy used to sell these books on amazon. We have purchased books written in English from Amazon for years, and recently purchased this book, and one other because of a marketing email from amazon indicating that this was a new title. We did not realize that these were simply spanish versions of books we had already purchased in the past in english versions. As a result we recieevd books which we cannot read. Nothing in the amazon marketing indicated that these were spanish print versions.

        1 out of 5 stars La Villa.......2007-06-10

The book "La Villa" is in Spanish and I can't read or speak spanish. I have sent the book back. At no time in the order did anything say it was spanish. I had to pay shipping on this item. Now I'm getting e-mails on books you think I would like just because I ordered this one.

1 out of 5 stars CLUELESS WHEN IT COMES TO SPANISH.......2007-05-04

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE ORDERED FROM AMAZON AND I GET A BOOK IN SPANISH! I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS IN SPANISH AND THINK THIS IS A BIG RIP OFF. YOU SHOULD RETURN OUR MONEY AS THIS BOOK IS WORTHLESS TO ME.

        Book Description

A Spanish translation of the original Curious George story.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jorge el Curioso.......2007-05-26

This is Curious George in Spanish. My grandson who just turned six loves Curious George. I want him to love and learn Spanish; hence, the buying of the book. Since he practically has the book memorized in English, I felt it would be easy for him to pick up words and phrases in Spanish.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as educational as advertised.......2007-01-20

The dust jacket for this book, which you can view here on amazon by clicking "Search inside this book" advertises: "This translation has been made especially for American children who want to learn Spanish. They will find a complete vocabulary at the end of the book. In addition, some Spanish phrases and expressions that may be unknown to the beginner are translated at the foot of each page."

Strangely, the book itself does not have those features. While it is a charming book, and my children will certainly enjoy it, there is no vocabulary at the end of the book, and there are no footnotes.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-01-05

There are so few of these, especially from an English original. Buy it for your kids to learn more Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Speakers Delight.......2006-03-11

My husband and I are both fluent in Spanish and we love this book for our two year old son. I speak only Spanish to him, hubby speaks to him in both English and Spanish. We are always looking for good books in Spanish.
This one has great, colourful pictures (there are two pictures with pipe smokers in them, but come on! It is a classic and if you can't teach your children not to smoke, is this really going to influence them that much!ha ha)and lots of good vocabulary for every day things written into a simple, fun story. It is beyond the "board book level" and yet not so complicated that a 22 month old gets bored. On the weekend, he asks his dad to read it 4 or 5 times a day, AND he will happily sit through the whole thing, especially the zoo animals at the end. (That is my only problem...the suggestion that the zoo is the greatest place to live!! in Captivity!!)

Note that there is not an English translation included, but if you are learning Spanish (and especially if you know the English story already) and want a bit of a challenge for yourself, the pictures will help you with YOUR vocabulary development, too.

5 out of 5 stars Great to add to any Spanish Library.......2005-12-27

If you'd like to teach your child Spanish, reading meaningful books is a great way to do it. As other reviewers have noted, this story is easy enough to give hints for vocabulary memorization - and the child will retain the story as well as the words. If you're worried about pronunciation, you can get something with a CD like Flip Flop Spanish to help you and your child gain more confidence as well as to be able to talk ABOUT the story in Spanish.

My weekly Spanish classes (ages 4 to 40) all love it when I read aloud to them, and this is a book I use often. It keeps them laughing and increases vocabulary.
