Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day was first published in 1972, catapulting a lovable, if peevish, young hero into the world of children's literature. Since then, Judith Viorst--mother of three boys, one of whom is named Alexander--has created two more Alexander books, Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday and Alexander, Who's Not (Do You Hear Me? I Mean It!) Going to Move.
This wonderful Alexander-fest features the complete tales, illustrated by Ray Cruz and Robin Preiss Glasser, much to the delight of fans who want to introduce Alexander to the uninitiated. Viorst says that she has been writing always--"or at least since I was seven or eight, when I composed an ode to my dead parents, both of whom were alive and well and, when they read my poem, extremely annoyed." If you've ever gone to sleep with gum in your mouth or dropped your sweater in the sink while the water was running, you'll be able to relate to Alexander, and so will your favorite kids. (Ages 4 to 8)
Book Description
First published in 1972, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day introduced to the world a feisty young hero who soon captured the hearts of a generation. Since then Alexander has returned in Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday and Alexander, Who's Not (Do you hear me? I mean it!) Going to move, and his position as a classic character in children's literature is assured. Alexander is everyone's favorite boy, struggling against those obstacles that seem to get in the way of growing up, with the most formidable ones being his siblings. Here, all three Alexander stories are combined in one book -- a perfect way for Alexander to be introduced to a whole new generation of certain fans.

I wonder what ever happened to. . . .......2005-07-28
Alexander? He'd be quite middle-aged by now, perhaps with children of his own.
It would have been great if we had seen some stories of middle-school Alexander, teenage Alexander, Alexander at college, Alexander starting his career, meeting Mrs. Alexander, dealing with his own kids. . .
Alexander loves Alexander.......2004-07-13
Okay, I'll admit it. It's cool to see the look on Alex's face when he gets books that have his name in them. And this was definitely a winner. We'd checked out 'the horrible, terrible, no-good, very bad day', so I knew he'd like this one. Of course when we read it together he reads what Alexander says. It's pretty cool.
Who hasn't had a "terrible, horrible no good very bad day".......2002-03-26
I grew up just loving Alexander in Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day. My mother read it to us a children (ok, so now you know I'm not too old!) and I was just thrilled to see such a good copy of not only it but the other Alexander stories as well. The library binding is very nice and this book will definitely be a keepsake for my children someday. If you like to have books to pass on, this one's for you!
Absolutely Positively Alexander - Fantastic!.......2002-01-29
My son's name is Alexander (goes by Alex). I gave this to him as a birthday gift and we have read it over and over many times. The three short stories are just the right length for a bedtime story. This book has humor and the boy, Alexander, is one boy that all children can relate too. The illustrations are great too! I highly recommend this for any child.
Teaches Kids About Everyday Challenges.............2001-11-16
.....that they or their friends may have to face in their young lives. In one story Alexander deals with issues surrounding moving to a new neighborhood. In another he deals with the repercussions of spending all his money. And, in the last, he deals with just a plain old bad day where nothing seems to go right. In each story Alexander feels kind of glum and is afraid that no one understands his struggle. By the end of each story though, he learns a lesson and learns his responsibility for his actions. The stories donýt end on particularly happy notes, where all works out despite everything, but rather shows a given realization being reached by young Alexander: that if you spend your money frivolously, you wonýt ýbe richý, that everyone has bad days and itýs just part of life, and that sometimes we have to do things we are afraid of and that we donýt want to do, such as move to a new neighborhood.
The stories are written on about a second grade reading level. Kids ages seven and eight will have little difficulty with the language or with following the story line. Honestly though, Iým not sure that kids this age will get the moral of the story on their own. They may just see the ending where Alexander doesnýt get what he wants as unfulfilling until an adult explains further.

We love the nice guy!.......2007-08-08
Dr. Harry Stratton Trevelyan. A kind of alpha yet nerdy scientist/expert in discerning whether the applications for Molly Abberwick's science foundation grants are worth funding. One side of his family works in real estate; the other as carnies, flashy knife throwers, fortune tellers, people with second sight, and so on. Harry's in the middle, with each side of the family asking him to sort out endless squabbles. He refuses to cut off either side of his family, even under pressure. He loves them all, and wishes they could tolerate each other. He's also afraid to let himself go in his sex life. His last lover (now married to his cousin) called their sex life boring, with occasional moments of terror! Poor Harry. Molly Abberwick decides to get to know him better when he keeps nixing her grant applications. She's shocked when she realizes the humour, the huge intelligence and the intense hunger for love and intimacy hiding behind Harry's incredibly tight self-control. Harry, on the other hand, has a big secret. He also thinks if he shows Molly how much he wants her, he'll lose her. A nice suspense plot and a wonderful, nerdy hero. We're absolutely positive you'll love it!
Excellent!.......2006-01-30
I love the characters in this book! I don't often reread by this author, but have to keep rereading this one! Its that good!
Absolutely, Positively one of JAK's Best!!.......2002-10-23
I LOVE these characters! This is JAK at her best. She just does not get any better. Molly Abberwick owns a tea and spice shop, enjoying her life in Seattle until her father dies and leaves her in charge of his Foundation to help budding inventors. She is now facing a problem. The problem is Dr. Harry Stratton Trevelyn, who is the 'debunker' of fake inventions. He vets the applicants before Molly passes out the money grants. Molly gets very enthusiastic about all sorts of inventions, only to have Harry shoot them down time after time. So far, he has not approved one single invention.
Harry has his own problems. He is caught between the two sides of his family - the very rich socialite Stratton side and his carnival side Trevelyns. Harry is very rich, so the carnival family is always asking him for this and that, with both sides keeping a constant tug of war on Harry. This emotional battlefield has caused Harry to be very self contained, maybe too controlled. The one place his control is let loose is in the bedroom. Also around to cause him headaches is his ex-fiancé, a psychiatrist who thinks Harry might be slightly insane and is trying to warn Molly from to not get involved with him. The final mix to Harry's problem is his is psychic and does not want to admit it. Having been raised in a carnival part-time, he has seen this used as a game, so he does not like to let people know about it.
As Molly slowly gets involved with Harry and the whole cast of his family, someone starts to play dangerous pranks on her, and it is quickly evident someone wants her dead.
The characters are so warm, so loving and with that JAK razzle-dazzle that she has polished to a beautiful diamond finished.
Lets hope she soon gets back to this level of writing.
Great Read.......2002-04-03
In my opinion this is the last really enjoyable book that was written by JAK before she entered her...shall we say, 'Difficult' phase.
This book is untainted by the Oh-So-Lame virus which blighted her later crop of novels, and is a delightful, humourous romp peppered with moments of surprisingly moving tenderness, as an emotionally scarred Alpha male is taught how to love again by a classic heroine in JAK's inimitable style.
The Alpha male here is an unusually intriguing character, with a background that makes us feel that he may in fact be justified in being such a moody prat, once we learn the full story. And the heroine manages to be stubborn, headstrong and opinionated etc, without being so irritating that you want to strangle her. The story has a nicely plotted intrigue element, which generates a couple of moments of proper menace.
All in all, a fine example of a JAK novel, well worth splashing out on.
Good audio recording........2002-01-06
Absolutely Positively is a good story about a Woman named Molly Abberwick owner of The Abberwick Tea & Spice Company and trustee for her father's foundation for inventors, Harry Trevelyan is a scientist and a consultant for the foundation who Molly clashes with and is about to fire when she begins to receive threatening letters and Harry tries to find out who is tormenting Molly and they soon find them selves attracted to each other, the plot also deals with Harry's psychic abilities which he has never been comfortable with and how he deals with it.

Very good.......2006-04-20
A smart, no-nonsense layout and oodles of curious baseball facts make Sugar's book stand out in its category. All your standard lists are here (HR, hits and strikeout leaders) but the book has its biggest fun offering up such lists as "Billy Martin's Fights," "Most Times Awarded First Base on Catcher's Interference or Obstruction" (Pete Rose), "Players Who Played 2500 Games in One Uniform", (Carl Yastrzemski at 3308) and Oldest Players Named to All-Star Team" (Satchel Paige, at 46). Too many fun, telling stats to mention here.

Book Description
Steven's a 16-year-old boy with two obsessions: sex and getting his driving license. The problem is, Steven's not thinking girls when he's thinking sex. Could he be -- don't say it -- gay? Steven sets out to get in touch with his inner he-man with Healthy Heterosexual Strategies such as "Start Hanging Out with the Guys," and "Begin Intensive Dating." But are Steven's tactics going to straighten him out, or leave him all twisted up?Absolutely hilarious. Positively sidesplitting. But absolutely, positively NOT GAY!
Customer Reviews:
I've been absolutely positively captured by David LaRochelle.......2007-07-03
I sat in a writing session with David at a Young Authors Conference in the Spring of 2007. I was so impressed with his ablility to communicate effective ways of using humor to convey important ideas to youth, that I immediately purchased his book Absolutely Positively Not. I read it in one sitting, being absolutely positively captured by his graceful and naturally funny treatment of a certain young man's coming of age story. As an educator, I highly recommend this book to both youth and adults alike. David's perspective is priceless.
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY A WINNER!.......2007-06-26
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NOT...is a totally entertaining book. There are probably few in our community who cannot relate to the angst of Steven, the books "hero"; and indeed, he ultimately proves to be just that. Light hearted, crisply written, honest, and compassionate; the books whisks the reader through the awakening and outing of a teenager who tries very hard to be "straight", but just isn't wired that way. A fun read!
For A Light and Enjoyable Read.......2007-02-01
If your looking to just sit back, relax, and unwind for an evening, this is the book for you.
Charming.......2006-06-02
A lot gay-oriented young adult lit today can be overly sexual (not a bad thing but also one that seems to promise more for a kid's reality than it can deliver), or depend too much on fantasy (gay kid finds out hot, sexy number one school jock is gay and they fall in love), can be didactic (teens giving speeches that I, on my best and most lucid day, could never deliver off the cuff) or just poorly written. Granted, Young Adults don't need books to be structured like a Henry James novel, but poor dialogue and character development can make me groan and I don't think anybody is done any favors when a publishing house rushes out a mess of a novel just to catch a trend.
Thankfully for us, "Absolutely, Positively Not ..." (APN) is a fun, light, well-written entry into the genre that's readable and completely charming. Sure, some of the book can have some situations that some see as sitcomish but you have to admit, they're cute. There are just as many funny, original moments in the book that previous reviewers ignored. I think my favorite moment in APN involves ice fishing and an wildly enthusiastic response when he thinks he's won a pickup truck only to really have won ... I won't give it away. That moment encapsulates the theme of the book and Steven's world, of misperceptions and reality.
The best thing about APN is that it's hopeful. APN doesn't perpetuate the myth that you come out and suddenly you're dating and everything's okay. It's a step by step process and Steven's just beginning to take the journey. Many of the best Young Adult novels are those that don't wrap everything up in a neat bow and allow for the reader to make their own decisions as to what happens next. I'm glad I happened to find this book and hope more people discover it from themselves.
Likable narrator stuck in sitcom situations.......2006-05-10
I agree with others who've reviewed this title that the narrator, Steven, is very likable. He's upbeat, even when he's nervous or angry, which is a trait that separates him from other gay characters in many novels. Unfortunately, I found the situations he found himself in -- like dating 24 girls in one month, having a sexy schoolmate throw herself at him, and accidentally starting a new fashion craze at his school -- to be standard-issue sitcom material. Most situations end at the close of each chapter, just like at the end of a TV episode.
The story shows promise in the beginning when Steven describes his attraction to square-dancing: he likes that there is no confusion about what to do. That sentiment seemed so straightforward and heartfelt that I wanted to know more about it and see Steven enjoying it regularly. Instead, the square-dancing group becomes another situation for humor based on deception (a fellow dancer wants to fix Steven up with her grand-daughter and Steven must come up with an excuse not to meet her).
With other good novels covering the teenage coming out process with humor AND depth (like "Blackbird" by Larry Depluchan and "Eight Seconds" by Jean Ferris), I'm afraid I just can't recommend this one.

From Book Idea to Bestseller is a very good soup-to-nuts guide for embarking on, and maintaining, a career as an author of non-fiction books. Michael Snell is an agent and writer, and Kim and Sunny Baker have authored nearly two dozen books between them. Here they share step-by-step information on creating book proposals, "cross-marketing," finding additional opportunities in ancillary markets (CD-ROMs, lectures, consulting, etc.), and developing a long-range "career" plan. Some of this information will apply to pragmatic fiction writers, too. And as for getting off your duff, one of the authors profiled herein published her first work at 12.

Customer Reviews:
A recommendation from the horse's mouth . . ........2002-06-26
I actually heard about this book as a result of sending a query to Michael Snell. He sent my "proposal" back with a nice note and a recommendation to get this book. It wasn't available in any of the bookstores in my area without use of special order, so I was a skeptic at first.
I obtained a copy of this book and eagerly flipped through the pages. Not only did I learn that I hadn't the slightest idea about what I was getting myself into, but I also learned that I had a lot of work ahead of me if I wanted to be a success.
I've been recommending this book as a jumping off point for other authors I know looking for agents and publications. This book, of course, doesn't guarantee you'll be a success in your venture . . . but it does a wonderful job showing you what steps to take.
Will I get published as a result of this book? Only time will tell, but I remain optomistic now that I've got the right tools.
Lots of good information in this book.......2002-05-29
I've been doing PR for books for 25 years and I learned a "bunch" from this book. Lively writing- lots of good advice. You should read other books on the subject .. sound advice.......2001-10-03
From Book Idea to Bestseller is true to its name. I wrote my own book, Making your Record: Courtroom Guidebook for Attorneys and Law Students on sale now on Amazon.com, following the guidelines of this book and managed to get it published without the assistance of an agent. I wholeheartedly believe only because I followed the sound advice given by the authors based on the step by step, chapter by chapter principles, explained in a simple and coherent fashion, I obtained my goal. Mr. Snell and the Bakers come across as down-to-earth people. Their writing style is one in which the reader feels as if they have a personal relationship with the authors, wherein one can vent their frustrations and read an excerpt telling one to be patient...this process takes time. The authors were and are my mentors in the publishing business. Through their words and examples, they display their credibility, expertise, and experience in teaching one how to open and get through the mysterious locked doors of the publishing houses. Having reached my own goal of getting my first book published, I recommend this book highly to anyone who would like to enter the writing business either as a hobby or a profession.

Not the Best and Not the Worst.......2000-05-16
A helpful book for first-time writers. Gives the basics, but not the best book currently out on the subject.
Best Practices for Selling Nonfiction Books.......2000-05-04
I have already sold two nonfiction books on my own without an agent. Reading this book was a real eye-opener. I found out that I did not know the first thing about how to write a nonfiction business proposal. My first thought was to wonder how much money it had cost me not to have read this book sooner. Well, better late than never.
Book publishing is still somewhat of a mystery to me. Reading this book dispelled more of that mystery than two years of working with outstanding publishers has. The authors are not only knowledgeable, they are very generous in the way they share their experience. By having an often-published author/agent and two other well-published authors collaborating, you have a lot of potential knowledge to pick up. I suspect it would be hard to get any more knowledge from an entire writing career than you obtain by reading this book. What a geat deal!
These are good writers, too. The organization of the book is simple and effective. The prose is brief and clear.
But what I liked best was the warmth and supportiveness that the authors expressed. These people genuinely want you to get published and have a writing career (if that's what you decide you want).
Get this book, read it immediately, and then start applying it as soon as possible!
Book Description
Now available in paperback, this book has been updated to include more humorous, entertaining myths that keep the rumor mills churning. Richard Roeper, the current co-host of Ebert & Roeper and the Movies, knows a lot about urban legends-tales so deliciously tasty that you desperately want it to be true.
Find out:
Does the "bonsai kitten" Web site celebrate cruelty to animals -- or is it just a tasteless joke?
What's the real story behind the so-called Ivy League porn film supposedly in production at Yale?
Could it really be true that a man named George Turklebaum dropped dead at his desk-and none of his co-workers noticed for five days?
Each of these stories and hundreds more like them have been told and retold, embellished and reworked. They're fun to hear or read, and even more fun to retell. They're part of our contemporary folklore.
Customer Reviews:
a good, light read.......2006-01-30
It is hard to review a book like this...or is it easy? The book is a collection of modern urban legends and the truth (or untruth) behind them. I guess you could criticize his selection of legends to cover, but that is more a personal choice. The truth is, Roeper does a solid job of reviewing the legend in question and then delving into the story behind it.
It succeeds exactly where it intends to succeed. It is a light-hearted, entertaining book. This is a book you can read 10 minutes at a time and always come away entertained.
Perfect for teens.......2004-10-10
"Urban Legends" by Richard Roeper is a light read perfect for a teen audience. This book touches on most of the common urban legends, the welcome to the world of AIDS urban legend, whether Tupac is really dead, Tommy Hilfiger on Oprah and other urban legends that have been rehashed over time. The book dispells what is truth and what is fiction. Overall though this book doesn't really tell readers what can't be found on the Internet or in other books. It's an entertaining book.
History Is Myth....Or....?.......2003-05-03
In this book there are many of those Urban Legends that we've heard of that have been circulating since we can remember. And, there are also many tales that we haven't heard of. Today we get most of these myths via email, but before email came to be, I remember hearing...."this happened....I heard that....so-and-so said....did you know that....?" And beyond the humor, are the effects these tall-tales can have on the people and places they're about. Many of these "alleged" rumors were followed up in the form of questions from journalists during media interviews. Often, the media will investigate a rumor (urban myth) to see if there is any merit to it. Once debunked as false however, the rumor lives on in peoples' minds.
HIV positive Hyperdermic needles left in the coin returns of pay phones. Those unfortunate people who went out on the town to wake up in hotel bathtub filled with ice, and a note left to call the Doctor because their Kidney had been removed. And what's to that gerbil rumor involving a celebrity we all know? Well, that's false too. That particular myth has been tagged on other celebrities going back to the 70s.
Who started these tales? When? How did they get spread?
In addition to listing and describing these interesting myths, Roeper notes of the origins, means and methods of their growth, and the current believability status of many of them. Good coffee table book. It'll occupy some of the folks you'll bring over.
Pretty good book, a fun and easy read!.......2002-11-19
This book takes a lot of urban legends, some I had heard, some I had not, and proves them wrong. The author sites his research, so you know that it was actually investigated.
This book sort of takes the fun out of some urban legends, but a lot of them, that you just knew couldn't be true, are proved to be false. So from now on, when my friends send me all these crazy emails, I can tell them they are a hoax and actually have a source.
Too many entertainment-world rumors.......2002-08-12
"Urban Legends" is entertaining but ultimately tedious, with far too much focus on celebrity gossip and rumors. For example, three pages are devoted to the fascinating question of who the "You" is in Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know." The author offers his own speculation, and we are treated to ruminations by fans and Internet posters, but we are left in the dark as to why this merits a place in a book on urban legends. Maybe there are urban legends that explain why popular musicians like Phil Collins and the members of Pink Floyd are regarded as geniuses in the journalistic world, on the Internet, and wherever else high school lives forever. Two and a half stars for an excellent selection of Internet, campus, and computer-tech legends, not to mention a badly-needed expose of the deathless "Bozo No-No" legend. (I was told this had happened on local television in Toledo, Ohio. Not.) Minus the same amount for the remaining fluff.
